Local singer/songwriter heading to LA for six life-changing weeks If Anna Saxton had given in to her first instinct while sick at home that day, she might have wiped out an eye-watering opportunity to crack the dream of a lifetime. By Viv Posselt When an email tied to that dream popped into her inbox, the 23-year-old singer/songwriter was sick in bed, fighting off an unwelcome winter bug. “I was going to delete it … but then, for some reason, I decided to re-read it.” The music gods must have been watching, because that email came with the offer of a six-week mentorship programme in Los Angeles through ISINA, and Anna had just 48 hours in which to accept. It turns out she is one of 30 people worldwide being flown to LA for six weeks, during which time she will be mentored by Grammy award-winning Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds. Hers is the first of the threemonthly ISINA intakes which will bring people from around the
world to LA for mentoring in six categories – composition, vocal, instrumental, sound engineering, guitar and DJ. After completing six weeks with their mentors, a lucky few will be selected to receive a record deal and worldwide music distribution through Bungalo/Universal Music Group Distribution. “It’s all a bit unreal,” Anna said. “I keep thinking I must have dreamt it. This kind of an opportunity is a once-in-a-lifetime thing … it’s a dream come true for me.” Anna heads to Los Angeles in late September for an October 1 start date. Her first-class return fare and six-week stay in a Beverly Hills mansion – complete with pool, spa and movie theatre – are all covered by ISINA, and she knows it will be hard graft all the way. So how did she land such a
fabulous opportunity? ISINA was established in 2014 by its chief executive Olag Shmelev, along with multi-Grammy Awardwinning songwriter/producer Walter Afanasieff, principally to offer undiscovered talent from around the world an opportunity to study with celebrity mentors. It essentially bypasses current methods artists employ to be discovered. Afansieff mentors in composition and producing; Kenny G mentors the instrumentalists; Frank Gambale in guitar; Humberto Gatica in audio engineering and producing; Paul Oakenfold mentors DJs, producers and EDM; and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds mentors the vocalists. Babyface is a 10-time Grammy Award-winning composer, producer, songwriter Continued page 2 Anna Saxton is poised for an LA experience like no other.

Local singer/songwriter heading to LA for six weeks Continued from page 1 and vocalist who has worked with some of the world’s top performers, including Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and the late Michael Jackson. Anna had spotted ISINA online and after researching it, decided to apply. That meant sending over a biography, songs, photographs and a demo, and from there she, and all the other thousands of applicants, were reviewed and
given feedback. “Just the opportunity to get feedback from such knowledgeable people was fantastic. They critique you and rate you, with five stars being the top rating. I got four-anda-half stars … I just couldn’t believe it.” The feedback praised Anna’s “powerful voice” and composition. They said she had a lot of talent and potential, and particularly liked her “unique style”.
Anna, who goes by her stage name Saxi, has been writing songs since she was 13 and describes herself as fitting within the mainstream pop genre. In mid-2015 she received NZ On Air funding with which she completed a video for her song ‘Lipstick’, which can be viewed on YouTube. Later that year, she was a finalist in the Pop Female Artist of the Year category of the LA Music Awards for unsigned artists, and at the end of last year,
she started work on an EP she hopes to have out by Christmas. On reading that potentially life-changing email, Anna first contacted her mum Denise Saxton. She’s been behind Anna all the way, never losing faith in her daughter’s ability to grit through to the future she wanted. “I’ve seen how hard it is to make it in music in New Zealand. This is just a fantastic opportunity,” she said.

Tony Shergold I’m probably a bit neutral because I’ve played squash at the Leamington Club and I’ve played touch rugby at the Hautapu Club. But I’d probably opt for Hautapu since I know a guy who’s playing on the team, Cedric Delevalle.
Darcey Foxall I would probably say Leamington. It’s a hard decision, I live in Leamington and used to play netball for Leamington, but now I play for Hautapu! So I’d be happy with either side winning.
Katherine Kyle I’d have to say Leamington, because my friend’s son (Cameron Wright) plays for them.
Brandon Tubman I actually live on the Leamington side, but I’d have to say Hautapu!
Cedric Delevalle I’m playing for the Hautapu Hopefools, I live on that side but also because I really like the club, they were very welcoming when we moved here. And Hautapu tend to win and I like winning! Of course I will still be happy to have a few beers with the Leamington players if they win.

‘Molly G’ awarded the first Ritchie Pickett scholarship By Viv Posselt Cambridge High School’s Molly Goodeve has just become the first recipient of the Ritchie Pickett Music Scholarship. The year 10 student was awarded the $1000 scholarship soon after returning from Los Angeles, where she won five medals and was crowned world champion in her age group (13 to 15 years) at the World Championships of Performing Arts. The prestigious event in early July saw the 14-year-old leave Hollywood with two gold medals, two silvers and one bronze. She was also offered 25 percent towards a scholarship at the New York Dramatic Art Academy. With her to witness her success were proud mum Toni Usmar and Paul Trenwith, her
Pickett Memorial Concert held in the Cambridge Town Hall in April last year and attended by several top names in the music industry. Morrinsville-born Ritchie Pickett, who died at his Cambridge home in March 2011, was a highly regarded country music singer/ songwriter described as one of New Zealand’s “kings of country/rock”. After his death, his family organised memorial concerts with the proceeds going to Cambridge High School for a scholarship in Ritchie’s name. The $1000 scholarship is intended to help a student or students succeed in music, and covers the purchase of instruments and/or private tuition. Molly, who sings under the name Molly G, has her own special link with Morrinsville. She’s been involved with music from the age of 10 and is part of the Morrinsville Country Music Club. In 2014, she won the NZ Entertainer of the Year award, and was later recognised with the title ‘NZ Rising Star 2016’ at the prestigious NZ Benny Awards. Keen to use her love of song to help others, she has raised thousands of dollars for Auckland’s Starship Hospital through fundraisers she has organised, and regularly promotes other young performers through a Facebook group she started at age 12. Delighted to be the first Ritchie Pickett Music Scholarship recipient, Molly wants to add the funds to a $1000 donation from Cambridge Rotary Club and use the money to help get her to an A young Ritchie Pickett, whose name is on the new music event in Tamworth, Australia, scholarship being administered by Cambridge High School. Soon after her return, Molly was presented with the Ritchie Pickett Music Scholarship at a special school assembly, where 1550 students and 100 staff were on hand to congratulate her and hear her perform a song called ‘Piece by Piece’. They also witnessed her being presented with the Cambridge High School arts tie – another surprise that she said came out of left field. John McDonnell, CHS deputy principal, explained how arts ties were normally presented only to year 12 or 13 students, and said: “We think she’s a very worthy recipient – even if she can’t actually wear it yet.” The music scholarship was formally launched at a Ritchie
For the time being, it’s more of the same. More penning songs, playing and singing … and even making instruments, which is something else she loves doing.
By far the most nervewracking moment she’s had all year was singing ‘Piece by Piece’ at the school assembly. “It was much more intimidating performing
for the school than for the audience at the final showcase in Hollywood,” she laughed. “That’s probably because I know them all here ... they see me all the time!”

4.5G now in Cambridge Wireless broadband and faster mobile data is now available to Cambridge residents after a new 4.5G Spark tower was switched on last week, giving locals access to the fastest mobile data speeds in the country. The upgrade puts the Spark network slightly ahead of devices, with no commercially available modems or phones
supporting the entire range and combination of 4.5G features at the moment. However, most new high-end phones support many 4.5G features, with the potential to propel their speeds to between three and five times faster than regular 4G. The launch also allows Cambridge residents to benefit from Wireless

Martin Judd becomes youngest Rotary President A former Cambridge local has become what is believed to be the youngest serving Rotary president in the world. Having turned 22 in April, Martin Judd (pictured), who grew up in Cambridge and moved to the UK five years ago, has been elected as President of the Manchester Trailblazers, one of three Rotary clubs in Manchester, formed in 2013. He is confirmed as the UK’s youngest Rotary president, and with an average Rotarian age of 72, members believe Martin is likely the youngest serving Rotary president in the world and among the youngest in Rotary’s 112-year international history. “Rotary is often thought of as a club for older men but this is just not true,” says Martin. “So the idea of breaking the mould and helping to change the image appeals to me a lot.” That goes for Martin’s 18-year old girlfriend Nicole Harris too, the newest Trailblazers recruit and the youngest female Rotarian among the UK’s 50,000 members. “Age has become a big issue in Rotary,” Martin added, “because the average age of
a UK Rotarian is 72 and so the pressure is on to generate the next generation who can take our international network into the future. Without younger members the proud history of this great humanitarian voluntary organisation could grind to a halt.” Martin was born in Tokoroa on North Island, New Zealand, the son of a racehorse trainer, and grew up in Cambridge and the UK before moving there permanently in 2012. It was here in Cambridge that he became interested in Rotary when schoolfriends joined a
sponsored youth exchange group to Brazil. So, in 2014, he joined the newly formed Manchester Trailblazers and was elected ‘President Nominee’ within a year. Martin lives in Oldham, works in customer services at Manchester Piccadilly’s Waitrose branch and is studying for an Open University degree in economics and mathematical sciences. During his presidential year he aims to raise membership, boost the charity fundraising programme and launch his own personal education and literacy projects.

Taxation rates on overseas investments This tax regime has been in force since 2007 and applies to investments that you hold that aren’t based in the New Zealand tax regime.
FRIDAY AUGUST 18, 2017
Jeremy’s switch from words to numbers pays off Everyone who knows him, knows there is just something about Cambridge’s Jeremy Smith. And now, so does the rest of the country.
Foreign Investment Fund (FIF) and Fair Dividend Rate (FDR) This tax regime applies if you invest: 1. As a Trust 2. As a Company 3. More than $50,000 per person cost price in FIF affected investments. 4. Various other situations where you are not investing as an individual. As a rule of thumb, a FIF affected investment is an investment in a non New Zealand domiciled investment (apart from certain identified Australian investments and overseas pensions.) The de minimis exemption from this tax applies to the first $50,000 of cost price of FIF investments per person. Tax is payable directly by you to IRD at the end of the financial year, based on one of two or three calculations (whichever is most favourable to you), at your marginal tax rate. If you are making regular investments, or adding lump sums your investment portfolio, your tax liability can change from year to year, and needs to be actively monitored. Moneyworks strongly recommend that you discuss your FIF tax liability with your financial planner and your accountancy/tax adviser.
Fair Dividend Rate (FDR) calculation: Tax is payable on 5% of the value of the FIF holdings as at 1st April of the financial year, payable the following year at your Marginal Tax Rate. This is the most common way to work out your tax liability. Your investment report or your accounting/tax adviser will be able to review the other two options to see if they work better for you in any year.

Bayleys innovative marketing initiatives and broad reach can put your property in front of discerning buyers.
If you have lived and worked overseas and want to bring your overseas pension to New Zealand (or have brought your pension back since i 2000), 2000) there are relatively new tax rules that may affect you:
Contact Alistair Scown today to discuss how you can achieve a great result on the sale of your farm or lifestyle property.
(Particularly for UK Pension Transfers)
1. There is a exemption from tax if you bring your funds back to New Zealand within the four years after you return. 2. After four years, tax is payable on the lump sum at your marginal tax rate, based on a percentage of the funds you bring to New Zealand. 3. That percentage increases each year you have been back in New Zealand. 4. You may not be able to pay tax out of those funds without incurring an additional tax penalty in the country of origin. 5. This tax law is retrospective. If you have brought pensions to New Zealand since 2000, you need to check whether you have a tax liability to pay.
By Viv Posselt Jeremy has just topped the national table in terms of sales at Fonterra Farm Source. He has been working at the Cambridge Farm Source store full-time since last June, and has just finished the financial year having ratcheted up 11,122 sales in 12 months. That’s an impressive 1432 sales ahead of the person who skidded into second place. It’s also enough to have personally served all of Fonterra’s 10,500 suppliers this year, and then started the process all over again. Displaying his characteristic diffidence, Jeremy’s not quite sure how he got there, given that there are 71 Farm Source stores nationwide, employing around 600 staff. “In all honesty, I just came into the Cambridge store wanting to do my best,” he said, “and really, this belongs to the whole team. Without their support, I’d never have got there. “Sure, we knew we had

been busy and that there was a lot going on, but it’s difficult to gauge your outlet in comparison to other Farm Source stores, so you really don’t know where you’re at in terms of sales. And I had no idea that was even in play.” In any case, Jeremy insisted, while he’s delighted with the result, it’s not all about the numbers for him. First and foremost, he loves the people that fill his day … the customers for whom he goes the extra mile each time, and his supportive co-workers. He enjoys doing what he can to help anyone coming into the store; he feels invested in helping them achieve whatever end they are seeking. Customers are farmers, lifestylers and a host of others who drop in for all sorts of reasons. “I approach them all in the same way. Their businesses are important to them, and so their needs should be important to us – that’s how I look at it.” Jeremy is probably better known locally as having been a long-time journalist with the Cambridge Edition. Even as be beavered away writing stories over the years, he spent many a Saturday helping service the needs of Farm Source clients – while the store was still known as RD1. The changeover to Farm Source took place two years ago, when the outlet moved into its purpose-built building in Albert Street. Store manager Malcolm Aish said the move had been a positive one for the company, prompting an increase in both sales and foot traffic. He’s massively proud of Jeremy’s achievement. “Right from the start, I noticed how hard he was working. He really does give it all, and he’s good with all the follow-up requirements that are needed. “Jeremy’s also very gregarious – that’s just who he is. It’s a pleasure to have him with us. He’s been noticed at the top level … he’ll be able to go a long way with us if that’s what he wants.” Malcolm said Jeremy was part of a strong, committed team at the store, one where making everyone walking into the store feel special was part of the culture. “They’re all good, but Jeremy sure has been cranking out those numbers. He’s a cool dude.”

FRIDAY AUGUST 18, 2017
Sizzling sausages will help get Meg back to Nepa It’s no real surprise that Meg de Reus wants to go back to Nepal. This is, after all, a girl with a heart as big as the sky. By Viv Posselt Meg was in the high Himalayan country in early 2016, one of a group of eight New Zealanders who spent two weeks there as Leprosy New Zealand Mission youth advocates. She loved almost everything about it, and wants to go back. Now a graduate nurse, Meg’s journey to Anandaban Hospital this time around will be to offer her skills in a voluntary capacity. That means she will have to fully fund her three-month stay without earning a cent while she’s there – and for that reason, Meg is trying to raise a few bob to help swell the coffers. With that in mind, she’s holding a sausage sizzle outside Cambridge Warehouse from 10am this Saturday (August 19). She has also set up a givealittle page to help support the trip. Some of the funds she hopes to raise will also go towards the purchase of a four-wheel drive vehicle to make it easier for
medical staff to access leprosy clinics in rural areas. Raising money for that was started by the youth advocates, but more funding is needed to complete the project. Once Meg decided to return, she applied to the Leprosy New Zealand Mission for an opportunity that would allow her to use her nursing skills. “I knew that I wanted to go back to Anandaban Hospital at some point … I’ve been passionate about it since I was there last year. Going through the application process was much easier because they knew me already.” She leaves for her threemonth visit at the end of August. “I’m really looking forward to it from a nursing perspective. I know I’ll be able to learn a huge amount in the hospital.” Anandaban Hospital is about 40 minutes’ drive out of Kathmandu, and between 70 and 80 of its 110 beds are allocated to leprosy patients; the rest are for general
patients. Most of them are rural people, with some even coming from across the border with India. Meg is already familiar with the often spartan living arrangements in Nepal, the frequent power cuts, lack of hot water and crazy road traffic, but it’s going over on her own that she said might make for more challenges this time around. “Being part of a group last time made it much easier. I’m probably more worried about the language difficulties than anything else. We had a translator with us last year, and most of the staff at the hospital are locals. That’s going to be interesting.” At the end of her three months, Meg will meet up with a friend before coming home in mid-December. After that, she will take stock before planning her next move. Travel will always be on the horizon, but she’s ready to bed in a couple of years’ nursing on New Zealand soil first.
In the meantime, those keen to support her trip to Nepal should get along to Cambridge Warehouse for a Saturday morning sausage sizzle, or visit Meg’s givealittle page – the link is: https://givealittle.co.nz/ Meg leaves for another visit to Nepal soon – this time as a volunteer nurse. fundraiser/nzgirlinnepal

Flying the flag By Steph Bell-Jenkins Cambridge man Mike Cooper isn’t famous...but his address is.
The local gardener’s Shakespeare St home has been drawing interested glances from passers-by
Mike Cooper’s Shakespeare Street home flies many flags.
ever since he began flying national flags from a makeshift pole on his lawn. “If I want to explain to somebody where I live I just say it’s the house that flies the flags, and it’s very rare that somebody doesn’t know which house I’m talking about,” he said. Mike’s off-beat hobby began when he hoisted an Australian flag for a party that “happened to coincide with Australia Day”. “And then I thought I’d better even things up so I flew the New Zealand flag and it started from there,” he said. “Just more and more flags.” Now, almost every day, he gets someone stopping to chat on their way past his garden, or knocking on his door to inquire about them. “The most common question is why do you do it?” he said. It’s a simple answer: he likes brightening people’s days and he loves the “warm, community type of feeling” his hobby generates. “They look good,” he said. “They cheer people up I think.” Last Christmas, Mike even got a card addressed to “flagman”. “It was basically just thank you for bringing a bit of interest into their lives and a lot of people say that,” he said. “They just love the fact that they can go home and work out which flag it was, or test their knowledge.”
So far Mike has 60 flags, which he switches every week or so. “There’s not always a reason why a particular flag is flown, it’s just that I like the look of them sometimes,” he said. All feature national emblems apart from a county flag his brother sent from Yorkshire, where Mike originally hails from. The only other he has been gifted is a silk Cambodian flag from Vengseng Hak and Chanvorleak Heng at Cafe 9. The remaining 58 he has bought himself for about $20 each. “I see the flag flying from my country, it’s very exciting,” Vengseng said.
Lynley Keightley, who moved to Cambridge with her family in January, is another local fan of the flapping beauties. “We’ve made all sort of discoveries in and around our new community, and one of our favourites is the flag house on Shakespeare,” she said. “There’s something cheerful and uplifting about their bright colours. They seem to me to be a celebration of the richness of different cultures.” Mike said he had liked flags since he was a small boy making sandcastles on the beach. “They just add a little bit of interest into my life and other people’s, I hope,” he said.

BUSINESS NETWORKING INTERNATIONAL
A business network is something LOCAL BUSINESS • GLOBAL NETWORK that is cultivated over time for many reasons, to grow your contact list of like-minded businesses, to help grow your client’s businesses by introducing them to people within your network, and sometimes you might need them yourself. Recently I had the need of services from my network of businesses that I’ve met and some, used many times. They were there for me when I needed them - for which I will forever be grateful. I had decided that I wanted to build a gift, a gift that the recipient would never see - a casket. Now, I don’t have a lot of woodwork knowledge, however through my business, I knew that I could tap into the right people. disappointed with what they had come up with. So we thought we’d create our own,” explained Molly Harvey. “Cambridge has a lot of character… but the logo doesn’t have anything to do with Cambridge, and it wasn’t made locally.” “The person who did it was in Auckland and doesn’t know much about Cambridge,” added fellow student, Thomas Nogaj. “It doesn’t have the colours of Cambridge, when you think of Cambridge, I think of green and nature and things.” “It didn’t show stuff about Cambridge at all,” said Madi Meredith. “I don’t really think it has anything to do with Cambridge, but I liked the colours,” added Kaiden Crawshaw. “The logo says ‘Cambridge’, but that’s about the only thing it has to do with Cambridge!” said Brayden Carroll. “I would like it with blue and green, blue for the lakes and green for the trees. The purple doesn’t really suit it, and the yellow kind of reminds me of the Z sign,” Daniel Cook said. “I thought it was good with the bright colours, but then when you think about it we should have a bit of green in it,” said Miles Julian. “It doesn’t have anything representative to Cambridge. I think kids could do a better logo design than what someone in Auckland thinks!” said Harry Kavanagh. “It’s a bit of a rip off for 11 grand!” added Jack McNab. “People think only adults can do it, but, they haven’t seen what kids can do,” said Daniel. The group of young but passionate Cambridge locals say they would love for the creators of the logo to consider the ideas of Cambridge students. “We’re the future of Cambridge so we should have a little say in it,” said Miles. The students each designed their own take on a new logo for Cambridge, incorporating what they think represents the town. The finished designs were made both by hand and digitally, and were completed last week. The students hope that their ideas might sway the “C” logo creators to redesign the new Cambridge brand, incorporating iconic Cambridge imagery and colours. “I still like the C but they could have other stuff behind it, like things that go on in Cambridge,” said Daniel. “It could have ‘Town of Champions’ or a lake or river going through. Instead of Auckland people doing it they should try and keep it ‘Cambridge’ and get someone local to do it. They’d know what Cambridge looks like.” The students say they’re very proud of their town and hope to see a logo which reflects its many positive features.

Great fun at “CamBRIDGE” sixes tournament Submitted by the Cambridge Contract Bridge Club Once again the CamBRIDGE Sixes was a fantastic day which was appreciated and will be remembered by those taking part in the fifth annual event. The resounding success of the event was due to the supreme effort put into every detail of the planning and organisation by members of the committee, supported by all the members of the club. With virtually every team in fancy dress, this provided a source of interest and entertainment with the colourful “Turkish Delight” team from Mount Maunganui taking the prize for most interesting and original costume amidst an atmosphere of excitement reminiscent of the Carnival of Venice! The winning team was the “Alice In
Wonderland” team whose members came from both Auckland and New Plymouth, with success for Cambridge players Kim Grounds and Karen Payne who took second place in the intermediate section, and Calum MacLean and
Eunice Eccles who placed third in the juniors. The unanimous verdict of all teams that took part in the fifth annual Cambridge Sixes Tournament (the largest one-day Bridge event in NZ) was once again, “great fun”.

We are supporting people in need from emergency housing, social housing, accommodation supplement, Home Start grants, as well as improving standards for rental properties. Over the last four months Housing First has helped 93 households off the street, out of shelters, cars, garages and overcrowded homes into safe, secure and stable accommodation. Housing First is currently working with another 156 people to help them into homes. There are currently around 66,000 social houses across New Zealand and we are planning to grow this number to 72,000 over the next three years. The Government has also put legislation in place to assist with the quality of rental properties requiring landlords to insulate rental properties by July 2019. Budget 2017’s Family Incomes Package will help low to middle income families from April 1 next year. This includes increasing the tax thresholds to give more money in the pocket to low income earners, increases in the Family Tax Credit, along with an increase in Accommodation Supplements. Those eligible for an Accommodation Supplement in Cambridge will receive up to $55 extra a week to help with rental costs. In addition we are helping people to get into their first home thorough Home Start support. In Waipa alone, 297 people have bought a home using the Home Start grant at a total value of $1,307,000.

Riders give back By Kay Hogan, Director of Equestrian, St Peter’s School Each year the St Peter’s Riders Council choses an equine charity to support. The equestrian students also help to organise a fundraising day which this year was for New Lives Animal Rescue. Established in 2014, New Lives Animal Rescue is a registered charity that specialises in the rescuing and re-homing of dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, horses and can accommodate other species where possible. The students approached local businesses, many of whom were keen to support this worthwhile cause, by donating items for spot prizes and raffles. New Lives rescue puppy, “Tawa” charmed everyone with her cute looks and the New
Lives volunteers were on hand to talk to people about the work they do. Year 13 student Nicola Hammond said of the day, “I think the charity show jumping day was a huge success. Lots of people turned up and the whole day had a really upbeat, fun atmosphere. It was great to hear many people enjoyed it, including the representatives from New Lives Animal Rescue.” With a few final donations still to come in, over $1800 has been raised – the Riders Council did a great job and were well supported by students, parents and staff. The 2017 St Peter’s Riders Council members are: Year 13 Prefect Shayla Shaw, Year 12 Prefect Isabella du Plessis, Kirsty Browne, Nicola Hammond, Hannah Heappey and Ruby Rogers. Reds reach final of Waikato Cup By Josh Easby, Cambridge Football Club Cambridge are heading to the final of football’s Waikato Cup, the region’s premier knockout competition. Represented by their Waikato B side, the club will meet Otorohanga in the final of the Soccer Shopsponsored competition after causing an upset win in last weekend’s semi-final. Cambridge beat Hamilton’s Melville United 2-1, a complete turnaround from when the sides met in the Waikato League last month with United easily winning 5-1. The chances of bring home the Waikato Cup adds to what could become the club’s most successful season in living memory. The club’s men’s first team have already lifted the WaiBOP Challenge Shield this month, and the women’s first team won the Waikato Women’s League. And with five rounds of play to go, the club leads both the WaiBOP Premiership and Championship competitions. In Saturday’s cup semi-final, Cambridge took the lead in the 15th minute at John Kerkhof Park when Alex Ball found the net for a rare goal. Melville fought back and levelled 10 minutes before half-time. Both teams had their share of
veteran players and the soggy pitch took its toll but neither side was willing to surrender a chance at cup final glory. Cambridge’s nerve held the better and Jason Szabo scored the winner – his 18th goal of the season in the league and cup – in a frantic scramble. The home side ran down the clock and survived a couple of late scares, with goalkeeper Paul MaCann cleaning up Melville attacks, despite a broken finger. Cambridge now wait to hear where the final will be held but knowing they will meet Otorohanga who play in the same Waikato B division. Otorohanga caused an upset, beating Melville United A 1-0. To reach the semi-finals, Cambridge B beat Hamilton Wanderers Classics in the quarter-finals (won 6-1), Claudelands Rovers (won 4-1) and Te Awamutu A (won 2-1). The side had a first round bye. It’s the first time Cambridge have reached the cup final since 2013 when the club’s Waikato A team lost to Hamilton Wanderers. More than 800 spectators attended last year’s Waikato Cup and Plate finals day at John Kerkhof Park. Meanwhile, Cambridge have boosted their chances of taking
both the WaiBOP Premiership and Championship titles with a double header of victories against Tauranga Old Blues. In the Premiership, competition leaders Cambridge beat third-placed Old Blues 3-1 to effectively end the Bay team’s title challenge. The win leaves the Reds three points clear (and with a superior goal difference) of Waikato Unicol whose 5-0 win at Rotorua United keeps them in the title race. In the Championship, Cambridge beat Old Blues 2-0 at John Kerkhof Park to extend their lead to six points with only five rounds of competition to go. Nearest rivals Tauranga City United lost 2-1 at Otumoetai, helping Cambridge’s cause. The win in the Premiership also meant Cambridge retained the WaiBOP Challenge Shield which it won the previous weekend. The club’s next defence of the shield will be against Tauranga Boys College on August 26. Cambridge’s win in the Premiership – the team’s 11th win in a row – was not the most attractive of the season but was never in doubt. Daniel Clarkson opened the scoring after seven minutes, neatly striking a direct free kick into the far corner of the Old Blues’ goal. Cambridge

kept up the pressure and twice struck the cross bar with efforts from Callum MacLeod and Theo Petropolous. In the 38th minute, Petropolous scored the goal of the game, hitting a rising shot from the edge of the area into the roof of the net. After turning round at 2-0, Cambridge effectively ended the contest in the 68th minute when the in-form MacLeod added the side’s third goal. The Reds were content to hold their lead but lost some concentration late,

allowing Old Blues to score a consolation goal through Andy Cooper. In the Championship, Cambridge and Old Blues cancelled each other in the first half but the home side took the win with two goals in a sevenminute spell soon after halftime. Andrew Taylor, making his comeback after injury, put Cambridge ahead when he converted a Mason Woodall free-kick in the 51st minute. Midfielder Craig Hedges scored his first goal of the season in
the 58th minute to make it 2-0. Player of the Day was defender Dehein Hindley who inspired his team to only its fourth clean sheet of the season. The Championship title could well be sorted this coming weekend when Cambridge travel to fourth-placed Otumoetai, and second-placed Unicol meet third-placed Tauranga City United. In the Waikato Division D, Cambridge’s D2 team lost 1-0 at West Hamilton United while the D1s had a bye.

Positive results for mathematics trust but more support needed
“Helping our children achieve academically through school so that they can make something of themselves when they get older
is a challenge all families face,” said Jean McKenzie, chairperson of the locally-based national organization, Mathematics
JOHN CHRISP GCF PICTURE FRAMER Guild Commended Framer Fine Art Trade Guild U.K. Member NZ Institute of Professional Framers “The Framer’s role is to protect artwork against both atmospheric conditions and future handling, and to enhance it’s aesthetic qualities.”
for a Lifetime Charitable Trust. “Many parents wish for their children to become passionate and excited about maths, while often the reverse is reality. Yet feedback received from students receiving grants for tuition from Mathematics for a Lifetime Charitable Trust (MFALT) indicate that some grant recipients are in fact getting excited!” One parent said, “In a few short weeks she has gone from struggling with and hating maths to a girl that was excited to go to school for a maths test! A home she is happily sharing her new found knowledge with her siblings.” And the daughter even said so herself, “I love maths now; finally I know what to do!”
It’s not only the parents that are noticing – one teacher commented, “he has displayed increased confidence and now participates in class.” Another teacher remarked, “once she understood some concepts, her enthusiasm was catching.” “This is exactly what the Trust hopes to foster by providing grants towards individual tuition for students that normally would not be able to afford it,” said McKenzie. The Trust, which has been operating for less than a year, has so far given grants towards tuition for 22 students from a number of locations in the mid to upper North Island. “The thought that children who felt
they were’ dumb’ or ‘hopeless’ are now blossoming and forging ahead really tugs on the Trust’s Board members heartstrings,” said McKenzie, who hopes to find more people to support their cause. MFALT is actively seeking donations and funds from individuals, businesses, and corporate entities to continue the positive impact on the students involved. “The demand for their services is growing as more people become aware of them,” said McKenzie. “The Trust invites any willing supporters to jump on board the initiative and make a positive difference for a student, their family and eventually the wider community,
by sponsoring tuition fees for children meeting the Trust’s criteria.” More information can be found online at www. mathematicsforalifetime charitabletrust.org as well as on the Facebook page.

Leamington School reminded locals this week of the importance to communicate stranger danger with children after a child reported being offered lollies through the school fence. “We have had an unconfirmed incident of a male who allegedly offered a child some lollies
through the school fence while they were putting their bike away,” the school posted to Facebook on Tuesday this week. “The child did the right thing and did not engage with the person, went inside and later in the day informed an adult about what happened. The police have been informed and are investigating.
“The description of the person is unclear, but the child was certain he was wearing a red hat. “This incident reinforces the need for parents to be in daily communication with their child about things happening through their day and when necessary, talking with them about how to stay safe.”
The school added, “It is pleasing to know the messages we are giving to the children about keeping themselves safe are ensuring correct choices are being made. Let’s hope the police can get to the bottom of these incidents in the very near future so we can have our sleepy little safe Cambridge back.”

Great day for final winter bowls tournament
The St Peter's U14 A team, now the 2017 Waikato Secondary School Under 14 Champions, pictured with the Steve Gordon Shield
St Peter’s win Waikato U14 rugby championship St Peter’s School’s U14 A rugby team recently became the winners of the Steve Gordon Shield for 2017, beating Hamilton Boys’ High School (HBHS) U14 B team 12 points to 10 in the Waikato Secondary Schools (WSS) U14 rugby final at Steele Park in Hamilton East on Saturday. HBHS had the home field advantage, having beaten St Peter’s in the top four round robin games (the only loss for St Peter’s this season). However, as Coach Ian Stewart notes, it was a challenge this group of young men had prepared for, making it a much-anticipated final clash. Stewart describes the match as a “game of two halves” in which St Peter’s made a very strong start. “Attack was abundant and well executed” he explains. “Wave after wave of players clearing rucks, moving the ball and running into the line. And for the little ball HBHS had in the first 15 minutes they were met with fearless defence by the blue wall of St Peter’s jerseys. “Confidence has never been an issue with this group of young men and we believe this is
due to them being very comfortable with doing their own roles in a game and more importantly having confidence in their team mates, inside and outside them, to do the same. “That, with some very good processes and systems in place makes for a very capable team.” The second half of the game saw the HBHS team start with a seemingly determined mindset, throwing everything they had at St Peter’s and putting them under immense pressure. The boys had to dig deep to hold them off. “It was good to see that St Peter’s never lost faith” says Stewart. “Body language was positive throughout the game, and every conversation was around getting the job done for each other. Pleasingly, that’s exactly what they did, defending strongly for the last 20 minutes and tirelessly making tackle, after tackle, after tackle! “It was a gusty effort by St Peter’s and a great finale to an outstanding season” concludes Stewart.

St Peter’s swimmer chases Olympic dream By Steph Bell-Jenkins Spending 16-20 hours a week training in the pool may be cutting into his social life, but the long hours are worth it for local swimmer Luke Mitchell. “I’m 17 now and having a social life is kind of a big thing, but I guess it’s my dream to go far in my sport,” the St Peter’s School student said. “It’s been my dream ever since I was young. And I’ve come too far to give up now. I’ve put in all these hard hours, there’s no point in really throwing it all away for nothing.” The sacrifices Luke has made have seen rewards rolling in over the past few weeks. Late last month he walked away from Swimming Waikato’s 2017 Awards Evening with an armload of trophies for his efforts over the 2016/2017 season. He was also selected to compete with St Peter’s Swimming Club at the South Australian State Swimming Championships during the recent school holidays, where he picked up one gold, three silver and three bronze medals across a variety of events. The medal haul came in spite of a disastrous build up to his
first international meet. “Unfortunately for me, two weeks before I was supposed to fly over to Australia I got really sick,” he said. “I continued to try and train but every single training I was coughing, I was getting really dizzy. I was not feeling well at all. So the next week I had to really work my butt off to try and get my fitness back. I’d worked so hard for it, I wasn’t going to let it slip away. “It was a lot of hard work, but definitely worth it.” Luke began swimming competitively at age eight. Long term he would like to compete at the Olympics, but right now his sights are set on representing New Zealand. “If I dream hard enough and put in the hard work I think it hopefully will pay off for me,” he said. He is currently balancing his swimming ambitions with his role as a prefect and house leader at St Peter’s, where he helps to run athletics, swimming sports, cross country, debating and music. “At the moment we’re doing house music and trying to get 250-odd kids to sing and dance is not easy,” he said. “As my teachers have been saying, it’s definitely one of the
Life Is All About Balance
harder roles to try and do. But it is fun; it’s really fun.” To cap it all off, he hopes to study teaching at the University of Waikato next year.
While Luke’s training schedule is demanding, he loves training with his friends and teammates, who are like a “second family”.
The satisfaction of doing a good set and working hard and knowing that you’ve done a good job is why I push my body to its limits – just getting
the feeling afterwards that I know that I’ve done really well,” he said.
Luke Mitchell took home an armload of trophies from Swimming Waikato’s 2017 awards evening.

The veteran’s (men 55+ and women 50+) weekly Tuesday round, 8th August: A large group of vets turnedup to play under a warm sky last week. Playing off the blue tees, offered an interesting variation for the men. Jan Mackenzie, playing her usual steady game, lead the Ladies field home again with 33 stableford points, followed by Ann Thompson, Sharon Harris, Karen Bodle and Marilyn Harrison all on 30 points. In the Men’s section, John Nesbit played very well to lead the men home by lot from Peter Beetham, both on 43 stableford points. In doing so, John also won the long standing jackpot to add to his prizes for the day. Duncan MacGillivray was next with 38, followed by Graeme Harrison, Michael Brace and Denis Clark all on 37 stableford points. There
were five players who scored a two on a par 3 hole. Ann Thompson, Peter Beetham and Duncan MacGillivray on Lands End, our signature hole. Stuart Hale on the 8th and John Nesbit on the 13th hole. Mick Callender was nearest to the 9th hole for 3 shots off the tee and Lyall Keyte won the longest putt on the 18th. The women’s group (weekly Wednesday and Saturday rounds) recent report: It was the turn of the Wednesday ladies to duck for cover on the 9th July as the rain never let up and in fact it became steadier as the day progressed. However all credit to Barbara Godfrey and Lesley Wilkinson who simply carried on under coats and umbrellas to complete their 9 hole round and entered cards for the LGU competition. Bringing a splash of colour to our streets and gardens in winter, the Idesia originates in East Asia. It is a deciduous flowering plant, a member of the Salicaceae or willow family, growing to a height of about 25 metres. The flowers occur in panicles up to 30 cm long and are small, yellowish-green and truly insignificant. Male and female flowers occur on separate trees and the female flowers only are fragrant. Its large heart-shaped leaves turn a light yellow colour in autumn, but the spectacular drupes of bright red berries that adorn the female tree in winter are without doubt its most spectacular feature. This is shown to good effect on this Idesia outside the Cambridge Tree Trust depot in Thornton Road.
berries are unattractive to birds, they are apparently quite edible. Tree Trust members have observed with delight that in late winter the native pigeon (keruru) sometimes feed happily on the berries of the Idesia near the Tree Trust depot. Each berry has several brown seeds and these are usually spread by birds. The wood of the Idesia does not seem to have any material or medicinal uses.

Local players named Success for two Cambridge referees in Mitre 10 Cup Squad Six Hautapu players were named last week as part of the Waikato squad set to compete in the 2017 Mitre 10 Cup season. Forward Mitch Jacobson and back Tawera Kerr-Barlow return for their third year on the team having played in 2016 and 2015. Mitch’s brother Luke was also named in this year’s team, as well as Hautapu forwards Ayden Johnstone, Sekope Lopeti and Sam Caird. Organisers say Sekope (hooker) and Luke (loose
forward) are likely to get their first Waikato cap this season. Luke is continuing a rapid rise in rugby having captained the 2016 Waikato Under 19’s side to victory, winning the 2016 Jock Hobbs Memorial National U19s tournament. He also led the New Zealand Under 20’s side to glory at this year’s World Rugby U20 Championship. Sam Caird (lock) was also a part of the winning 2016 Waikato U19 squad. “The balance of the group is exciting. It’s important to
have strong depth, given the condensed nature of the scheduling,” Waikato head coach Sean Botherway said of the 32 man squad. “We have competition for places and the onus is on individuals to perform well when they get their opportunity.” Waikato’s 2017 Mitre 10 Cup season kicks off in New Plymouth against Taranaki on Saturday August 19. The first home game of the Mitre 10 Cup is against Counties Manukau on Friday 25 August.
Final round of winter triples Josh Bull
Rupert Friend
Submitted by the Cambridge Rugby Referees Association (CRRA) Two Cambridge rugby referees received awards at the Waikato Rugby Referees Association Annual Awards and Dinner Evening held on Saturday 5th August at the Hamilton Old Boys RSC. We would like to congratulate these two CRRA members for their achievements. They are: Rupert Friend, who was awarded for being appointed to referee the Championship B Final, and Josh Bull, who was awarded for
being appointed to referee the Championship Final. Josh also received an award for the “WRRA Most Improved Referee” as he was selected for the NZ Referee Wider Training Group. Josh will also be refereeing at the Jock Hobbs Memorial National U19 tournament which will be held in Taupo during September. Not only is this a platform for NZ most promising young players but also for referees such as Josh and we wish him all the best.
Submitted by Central Bowling Club Cambridge Results from the final round of the Winter Triples tournaments, played on 13 August. In third place was the visiting team of Raewyn Chalklen, Wayne Wenham and Murray Belchamber, who were kind enough to step in at the last minute to fill a vacancy. Runner up for the second time in a row was a home team, Keith Walker, John Collett and Gordon Searle. The winners with 4 wins and 32 ends were another visiting team of Val Allen, Richard Watt
and Daniel Meinung. Many thanks to the sponsor for the day which was Liquorland Cambridge. Special mention must once more go to the kitchen staff, with their fine selection of three homemade soups, which were as always appreciated by all. Thanks also to all visiting teams for their support during the season, along with the home bar staff, green keepers and helpers. The next Club event is the Summer Season Opening Day tournament, taking place on Saturday 2nd September. All members and spectators welcome.

BUILDING AND BUYING YOUR NEW HOME
Plans released for destination playground Te Awamutu’s new destination playground may be ready by Christmas. Waipa District Council has released plans for a revamped and extended playground near Selwyn Park, linked to the wider Te Awamutu hub incorporating the Trust Waikato Events Centre and new library. Playground plans include ideas from the community following a consultation process in September last year. Community facilities manager Bruce Airey said construction of the playground will begin in October and “all going well” will be ready for families this summer. Plans and funding arrangements for the new bike skills park were currently being finalised, he said. More details would be released as soon as they were available.
“One of the playground features we are most excited about is the new fenced under-five play area which is something many people told us they wanted,” Airey said. “But there are a whole lot of other features the community will be pleased and excited about including new playground equipment, a slide and balance area and a water play area. It will be a fantastic community park that will attract people to the area and encourage much better use of what is a shared public space.” The new playground area will include a grass terraced barbeque area with seating and picnic areas. The bike park will be next to the existing Te Awamutu rose gardens where some roses have been moved to help accommodate the new facilities. The vast majority of gardens remain intact. Airey said concerns that
*OUTDOOR BLINDS
the gardens were being “destroyed” to make way for a bike park were completely unfounded. “The vast majority of rose
*AWNINGS
gardens are untouched but will now be linked much more closely to other public spaces, including the playground. We think that
*UMBRELLAS
will encourage more people to visit and enjoy the gardens and that’s a good thing.”

Two G.J. Building consent applications much easier for Waikato district residents Residents in the Waikato district, which includes those living in Tamahere, Matangi, Hautapu and Pukemoremore, will now find it much easier the quicker to submit a building consent application to the Waikato District Council. People can now submit their building consent electronically, as well as track its progress online. Waikato District Council is accepting consent applications that are emailed with a file share link (e.g. Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive) or applications saved on a USB stick. Previously people had to print out two application copies and physically bring them to one of the Council offices. People can still submit paper applications if they wish, but they will only have to supply one copy. “These changes will reduce printing costs for our customers, saving them money as well as time,” says Building Quality Manager Merv Balloch. “It Continued from previous page

People will now receive the application number at the beginning of the process which will make it easier if they want to make a payment online. It also means they can track their building consent online.” These changes will also save time for Council staff. “With a 50% increase “In town on in building consent applications over Wednesdays.” the past 2 years, it’s important that we make the process as efficient as possible,” said Chief Executive Gavin “In town on Ion. MOTORING
FRIDAY AUGUST 18, 2017
Electric vehicle owners give their take on E-driving By Sophie Iremonger Cambridge now has its very own electric vehicle (EV) charging station, which opened recently at the corner of Queen and Victoria Streets. It provides not only the chance for locals to charge up their own electric vehicle, but also encourages EV drivers around the country to turn off the bypass and stop in Cambridge for a charge up. Two local electric vehicle owners, Peter Bryant and Josh Spelchan, say they’re rapt that they made the move from a regular car to an electric vehicle. “So far for me it’s been absolutely problem free, the performance is awesome, the economy is awesome, there’s literally no down side to it, maybe except for the cost of mine!” says Peter, who purchased the Tesla Model S a year ago, one of the higherend models of EVs. “I’ve never bought a new car in my life, but I wanted to have an electric car and the only one I was really aware of is Tesla, and I love gadgets, and that pretty much sold me.” Peter’s friend and squash partner, Josh Spelchan, purchased the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq. Though he was considering getting the Nissan LEAF, one of the most popular moreaffordable EVs, he chose the Ioniq for its greater range of 200km on the open road, or up to 300km for short trips around town (compared to the LEAF’s open road limit of 100km, or
130km around town). “Petrol doesn’t like acceleration but electrics do, so its more efficient around town,” Josh explained. “This was probably the best-balanced car by all of the reviews I could read about it, for the family. I took it for a test drive and fell in love with it… you don’t need to warm it up, it’s low maintenance… For my family and my wife particularly, it suits her driving in Cambridge. “But the LEAFs would suit almost anyone in Cambridge doing the what I think would be normal Cambridge trips, down to the supermarket, picking up the kids or whatever you’re doing locally.” Japanese imports of the Nissan LEAF can be purchased for as low as $10K, whilst EVs with a greater driving range start at around $45K. Some EV chargers around the country are free, whilst others, like the one in Cambridge, charge an average of about $20 for a full charge (25c/minute + 25c/kWh), which takes about 30 minutes. Charging at home over night takes about three to four hours, but only costs around $5. “I usually charge at home, but it’s quite cool that this EV charger in Cambridge has opened up, because if I suddenly had to go to Auckland or something and for whatever reason the car isn’t fully charged, then I know that I can just duck down here (to the Cambridge charger) and it will charge a lot faster,” said Peter.
When it comes to travelling across the country, it’s quite easy to find a charging station. Apps such as “Plug Share” feature all EVs across the country on a map, and indicate which ones are available. When viewed around lunch time on a Friday, an online map indicated that just one third of all EV charging stations were being used. “It used to be ‘where are we going to stop’ versus now we just have to choose where we’d like to stop. Like today I’m going to Wellington, so I’ll be making three stops to charge, but there are several places to stop on the way,” said Josh. “And who doesn’t stop for 30 minutes anyways, to get a bite
to eat, or take the kids to the toilet! You know.” The local EV owners said it did feel a bit strange getting used to driving an EV, but it’s really no different than driving a normal car. “It’s not like you have to relearn anything, it’s still driving a car, anybody can jump into it and drive it,” said Peter. “And electric engines have really high torque, which means that even at a low speed they can put a lot of power into the wheels, so you can go from a dead stop and accelerate really quickly. So there isn’t that risk of having your car stall as you pull out into a busy intersection or anything crazy like that, it’s just go.”
“My car automatically braked the other day because somebody from the side road pulled out, and when people walk behind your vehicle and it picks them up and starts beeping,” said Josh. “When I first drove mine I was a little nervous, you don’t have all the usual sounds and things. But now I’m used to it, it’s actually so quiet that both of ours have safety sounds put into them so they sound like cars when they’re rolling around town, so people get a chance of hearing it as you approach.” So if you’re thinking about getting an electric vehicle, Peter and Josh say, “go for it!”.
Josh Spelchan and Peter Bryant say they're glad they made the move to electric vehicles.

TheatreReview New show coming up at Gaslight Theatre Tickets are now on sale for the Cambridge Repertory Society’s next show at the Gaslight Theatre, “Breaking The Code” – on from the 2nd to the 16th of September, directed by Dave Stearns. “Don’t forget to book your tickets and get all your friends along too. This is an awesome play about a recognised genius and is not just for computer geeks,” said Stearns. Breaking the Code is a play originally written in 1986 by Hugh Whitemore, about British mathematician Alan Turing, who was a key player in the breaking of the German Enigma code at Bletchley Park during World War II and a pioneer of computer science. The play thematically links Turing’s cryptographic activities with his attempts to grapple with his homosexuality. Alex Norris will play the lead role of Alan Turing. Detective Mick Ross will be played by David Lumsden. Christopher Morcom, Turing’s childhood friend (1911–1930) will be played by Seth Strauss, and Turing’s mother Sara (1881–1976) will be fittingly played by our very own local Sara – Sara Young. Ron Miller, a young man having an affair with Turing (based on Arnold Murray), will be played by Tycho Smith. Dillwyn Knox, the manager at Bletchley Park recruiting Turing for government service, will be played by John Kelleher, and Pat Grant, a co-worker of Turing’s at Bletchley (based on Joan Clarke; 1917–1996) will be played by Rye Inglis. Tickets for Breaking The Code are now available from Paper Plus on Victoria Street, Cambridge, or at www.eventfinda. co.nz. Purchasers of tickets of the show on Tuesday 12th
September will receive a free 1-for-1 ticket to the Regent Cinema in Te Awamutu. Shows take place September 2 – 16 at the Gaslight Theatre, at the corner of Hall and Alpha Streets, Cambridge. More information available at www. cambridgerepertory.org.nz.

Fantastic movie: a breathtaking, overwhelming vision of the celebrated comics, brought to life with heart blood. Is this the best Sci Fi film seen since ‘The Matrix’?
A warm, witty and genuine story, near-perfectly told and with great music too. Patrons say it is excellent.
