One Cambridge local has made her mark on the world map following an excellent performance at the 2017 WWA Wakeboard World Championships held in Toronto, Canada, on the weekend. Morgan Haakma won her first women’s amateur world title on day two of the champs, blasting the competition out of the water. The Cambridge wakeboarder earned the title after pulling off a massive backroll and another impressive wakeboarding move, the “T/S Indy 180”, to score the top result of 85, miles ahead of secondplaced USA wakeboarder Alisa Topper on 70 points and Canadian Christi McKinney with 50 points in third. “I was so nervous because I knew the other girls were good and had tricks that I haven’t landed yet,” said Morgan, “but I couldn’t control how those girls rode, so I tried to stay as focused as I could. I went through my pass in my head and ended up landing the whole pass with two extra tricks in, and then landed my first ever in-competition backroll at the end which was the best feeling in the world.” “I had to ring my dad back in New Zealand and wake him up at 2am to tell him, it was for sure the best moment I have ever had wakeboarding!” Morgan followed her dad’s footsteps into wakeboarding, having grown up in a water-skiing family. Daffodil Day at St Kilda World title for wake boarder Submitted by Bupa St Kilda Care Home

Continued from page 1

Starting from age 11, she entered her first competition in 2009 along with her brother, and has built up much of her wakeboarding prowess through training with her family and friends at Karapiro. More recently the 20-year-old has been training with the crew at “Shred the Gnar” wakeboarding school in North Carolina, USA. “I am absolutely loving riding with the crew, everyone is so stoked on wakeboarding and so supportive and encouraging which makes all the difference when learning new tricks,” Morgan said. “I have learned so much since I have been here. I have so many more tricks I want to learn and plan on doing as many more competitions as I possibly can while I’m in the States.” As a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholar at the University of Waikato, Morgan is currently on an exchange at the University of North Carolina. She will return to Cambridge in December in time for the New Zealand competitions.

Yellow sun umbrellas and garden chairs were put out as the sun was shining brightly for Daffodil Day on Friday, August 25 at Bupa St Kilda Care Home. Staff, residents and family members dressed up in yellow and the house was decorated with beautiful daffodils in the hallways and lounges. The front entrance was taped off with yellow cord and yellow dishcloths waved in the glorious spring day breeze. At 10.30am the BBQ was lit and a delicious aroma of sausage and onions made the residents and villagers come out. Everyone enjoyed a lovely social sausagesizzle morning tea with a comfy seat in the sun and some music in the background. All proceeds from the sausage sizzle and donations are going to the Cancer Society and at the latest count the total funds raised were

$200. St Kilda Care home would like to thank all who donated generously and everyone who worked hard to make this a super fun morning.

Steve Haggie Off the top of my head I would say Sarah Ulmer. She does a lot of work for free and gives her time and that. She spoke at BNI the other week about the cycle trail from Ngaruawahia to Cambridge. She does a lot of volunteer things like that, I guess just for the passion of what she does.

John Grootscholten Maybe one of the rowers, Eric Murray or Hamish Bond, or Mahe Drysdale.

Trevor Sills I reckon probably one of the rowers, like Hamish Bond or Eric Murray. They’ve worked really hard, and yeah so I reckon that would be a good one. They’re a good inspiration for people.

Kelly Grice I don’t really know many people, I’ve only been here for 18 months, but I would probably pick Anna Bodle. She coaches netball, she coaches rugby, and she’s an awesome mum of three. She gives a lot to sport in Cambridge I think, as a volunteer as well which is even better.

Alan Garvin and Archer From the people I know, one person who I think contributes a huge amount to Cambridge is probably Mike Pettit, the head master of Cambridge Primary, he’s involved with a number of community things and he does a huge amount for the school, he never stops!

St Peter’s comes top at science fair

St Peter’s School Cambridge won the NIWA Shield for ‘Best Overall School’ for the second year running at the NIWA Waikato Region Science Fair last week. They placed first out of 30 schools to enter the competition. In addition to this, St Peter’s came first in Year 7-8 Planet Earth and Beyond, Year 9-10 Living World, Year 9-10 Physical World, Year 9-10 Planet Earth and Beyond and Year 11-13 Senior Sciences. “The results indicate we are strong in all areas of the Science curriculum – Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth and Space, as well as Agriculture and Technology,” said Sarah Hay, Head of Science at St Peter’s. “With 400 entries across all the categories, we are exceptionally proud of what our students have achieved.” St Peter’s was also in the top three placings for Year 8 Living World, Year 9-10 Material World, Year 7-8 Junior Inventions and Technical Innovations, Year 11-13 Senior Inventions and Technical Innovations, Year 9-13 Scientific Wall Charts and Open Scientific Photography. All St Peter’s Science students are encouraged to enter the competition. For the top class at each year level at St Peter’s, it’s built into the curriculum – to

enrich and extend learning opportunities in science. Students worked all of term two on their projects, choosing a subject or invention based on their area of interest. Those selected to enter the competition were required to present their findings in a discussion session with the judges, gaining valuable experience in communicating their ideas and findings to an independent audience. Some students opted to do a scientific wall chart, a scientific observational drawing, make a video about an aspect of science or enter the photography category that is about science. A number

Suicide figures spark new concerns By Viv Posselt This week’s announcement that suicide deaths in New Zealand have increased for the third successive year has prompted a response from Euthanasia-Free NZ executive officer Reneé Joubert. “It is concerning that there is an assisted suicide bill before Parliament, despite our high suicide rate,” said Ms Joubert, who is based in Cambridge. “Essentially, the only difference between suicide and assisted suicide is the number of people involved in bringing about the death. In both cases, the person likely desires death due to feeling that they’re suffering unbearably and/or have no hope for a better future. “If suicide is to be prevented, assisted suicide should be prevented also.” Ms Joubert was responding to provisional statistics released on Monday by Chief Coroner Judge Deborah Marshall, showing the highest provisional figure since records began in the 2007/08 year. A breakdown of the figures shows that 606 people died by suicide in the year to August

2017. The number of recorded suicides for the 2015/16 year was 579. Males are represented in about three-quarters of suicide deaths, the highest number of suicides are among 20 to 24-year-olds, and Maori continue to have the highest suicide rate of all ethnic groups. Judge Marshall said while the emotional impact of suicide had been discussed over the past year, more discussion was needed around prevention. Ms Joubert said there was a demand for ‘assisted suicide’ as a means of suicide. “We regularly receive phone calls and emails from suicidal people inquiring about ways to access euthanasia because they can’t bring themselves to using other suicide methods. They usually start out talking only about their emotional reasons, and later mention physical medical conditions that would make them eligible for assisted suicide and euthanasia under David Seymour’s End of Life Choice Bill.” ACT MP David Seymour has a member’s bill on the topic is currently awaiting its first reading. Ms Joubert went on: “Even if

depression would be explicitly excluded from the eligibility criteria, suicidal people would still be at risk of accessing ‘assisted dying’. Even mild, subclinical depression could still affect a person’s will to live.” She said that ‘assisted dying’ legislation would send the message that death was an appropriate response to suffering – a dangerous message for those who are emotionally vulnerable. “Such a law would change the role of doctors from only helping to prevent suicide, to also facilitating suicide.” Ms Joubert said EuthanasiaFree NZ was calling on politicians and the public to reject Mr Seymour’s End of Life Choice Bill in principle.

MP gets to grips with local trades apprenticeships Taupo MP Louise Upston spent an hour or so with a group of building apprentices in Cambridge recently during the country’s ‘Got a Trade? Got it Made!’ week. Ms Upston, who is also the Associate Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, spent time last week visiting a variety of trades organisations and businesses, talking to apprentices and employers about trades apprenticeships in New Zealand. The ‘Got a Trade? Got it Made!’ initiative is a national campaign aimed at getting more people into apprenticeships and trades training. On August 24, she visited Rob May Builders’ apprentices at work on the St Kilda

subdivision, where she spoke to six of the nine apprentices employed by the company. “It was fantastic to meet apprentices and hear their stories; what made then decide to take up an apprenticeship and how they see their careers developing,” she said. “It was also great to hear

from employers and training organisations about their work to train and upskill the massive workforce needed to keep our economy strong.” Ms Upston said apprenticeship training has been prioritised by the National Government. “Budget 2016 provided an

additional $14.4 million to support continued growth in apprenticeship numbers. In November 2016, the Government announced a new target to have 50,000 people in apprenticeships by the end of 2020, and a further $7 million over four years from 2017 was announced in May.”

Pictured right: Taupo MP Louise Upston at the St Kilda subdivision site with some of the apprentices working for Rob May Builders.

New Cambridge to Tirau road Discuss your design ideas with us

Taupo MP Louise Upston has described the new Cambridge to Tirau ‘Road of National Significance’ as a game changer for the Waikato region. She said the new road was one of 10 new ‘Roads of

National Significance’ National is committing to, and said building “world-class infrastructure that will encourage economic development and regional growth” was a key priority for the National-led Government.

“The new road will ensure Cambridge and the surrounding suburbs maintain a strong connection to Tirau and South Waikato, offering road users a safer, more efficient route,” Ms Upston said. “Waikato’s central location in the upper North Island makes it a nationally significant infrastructure corridor, so the announcement of the new continuous four-lane State Highway signals a boost in economic growth and productivity, and improved reliability of the State Highway network for the region.” The 10 new ‘Roads of National Significance’ are expected to cost around $10.5 billion, on top of $12 billion invested in the

initial seven, that are now either complete or under construction. “The ‘Roads of National Significance’ are lead infrastructure projects meaning we are investing now to encourage future economic growth, rather than waiting until the strain on the network becomes a handbrake on progress”, said Ms Upston. .

Equidays line up announced A father-and-son cowboy duo from the US, an Olympic equestrian coach and New Zealand’s horse-taming Wilson Sisters are just some of the attractions announced for this year’s premier equine event, Equidays, taking place at Mystery Creek in October. Organisers this week announced the huge line up of entertainment. Ammie Hardie, Equidays’ senior event manager, said preparations for the “biggest Equidays yet” are tracking smoothly, including plans to take a “slice” of the event to the South Island – in Christchurch – for the first time, which she says will allow a wider audience to see what the event offers. “We’ve been keen to do a South Island version for a while now, so with the success of previous years behind us we felt like this was the year to do it,” says Hardie. “We’re really excited to share our world-class clinician workshops, exhibitors and entertainment with everyone heading along.” Last year Equidays had more than 23,000 visitors through the gates at Mystery Creek, more than double the number five years before. With the event now in its seventh year, Hardie says they’re always

looking to add to what they offer. “We get so much amazing feedback after each event, and we’ve just gone from strength to strength each year,” says Hardie. This year Equidays runs from October 13-15 at Mystery Creek Events Centre. Since its inception in 2010, Equidays has grown into a world-class event, endorsed by Equestrian Sports New Zealand (ESNZ) and event ambassadors the popular Wilson Sisters. Education is a big focus of Equidays, alongside its values Entertain, Equip and Empower. This year there are 16 visiting clinicians and more than 40 hours of clinics per day, along with more than 200 exhibitors where visitors can purchase equine equipment. Each year international clinicians host a variety of teaching workshops for riders and the public. Among the clinicians this year are Rob Ehrens, Olympian and coach of the current world show jumping champion, and Kyra Kyrklund, who is a six-time Olympic medalist and world champion dressage superstar. A third night show has also been added to the line-up of entertainment.

“We’ve usually had night shows on the Friday and Saturday, but due to demand we’ve now added a Sunday night event,” says Hardie. The night shows feature top riders racing and jumping, and

performances from worldleading equine entertainers. The Wilson Sisters (Vicki, Kelly and Amanda) will host the inaugural ‘Top Talent’ competition, where selected participants impress the crowd

with their horsemanship skills, and Texan father-and-son duo Craig and Cole Cameron will lead the ‘Cowboy Challenge’ – a competition for western riders. Other performers include Dan Steers – aka Double Dan – and

his wife Pia in the Equitainment Extravaganza, and Kapiti Vaulting, who will perform alongside adagio dancing duo Silhouette.

How do we choose the fund managers we recommend? At Moneyworks, we are continuously reviewing the investment managers that recommend that our clients use. We subscribe to three different research providers (Morningstar, Lonsec and Farrelly’s) to help us with our monitoring and decisions. We attend a wide range of conferences and briefings and read widely as well as meeting with the fund managers in person. Moneyworks preferred style (based on research and experience) is for active management, with ‘high conviction, stock-picking’ fund managers. We put in a lot of research to choose a fund manager, and we don’t change our fund managers regularly. Here are the things that we consider when we are researching, reviewing and monitoring the fund managers: 1. What asset class is the fund investing in? Cash, Fixed Interest, Equities (Shares), Property, Infrastructure, Alternative investments. 2. What is their style and will that fit in with our other managers? High conviction, stock picking, passive, value, growth, small cap, large cap. 3. Do they actually do what they say they are going to do? 4. Do they let the research companies in to research and analyse them? 5. What is the funds track record? Returns, volatility, media coverage raising any issues. 6. Who are people involved? What is their history and track record? 7. Who owns the fund manager? Private, boutique, large institution. 8. What are the fees, including any performance related fees? 9. What tax and currency environment do they work in? 10. What kinds of derivatives and synthetic instruments does the fund manager use? 11. Do they fulfil all the regulatory requirements of the markets that they operate in? Finally, the critical decision is ‘would I trust these people with my money?’ or as a colleague put it ‘would I let my child go out with them’? There are many factors involved in choosing, recommending and monitoring a fund manager, and to do it properly involves a lot of resources, time and knowledge. This is why our clients work with us to provide them with professional guidance for their investments (including their KiwiSaver). If you would like to discuss your investments with us, contact us on contact@ moneyworks.co.nz, or 0800 225 621 to arrange a meeting.

Entered in the unpublished manuscript category, his work, “Divine Laziness: The Art of Living Effortlessly” won him the $10,000 prize ahead of five finalists. Jeremy will be known to many in Cambridge, having attended Cambridge East, Cambridge Middle and Cambridge High schools. After finishing school he went on to work for Geoff Taylor making jewellery, before moving to Wellington where he trained as a qualified homeopath, now working at a website developing firm. Having trained in Kung Fu in Cambridge as a child, which he developed to a second degree black belt, he now practices the Chinese art of traditional Wing Chun, as well as Buddhist meditation. He now resides on the Kapiti Coast with his long-term partner Kate. His family back here in Cambridge can certainly be proud of his achievements to date!

St Peter’s Catholic takes ‘higher point of view’ on peace By St Peter’s Catholic School student, Matteo Di Maio

During International Peace Week recently, St Peter’s Catholic School decided to take to the skies for a new view on peace. With the help of a friendly past student and his drone, the students were able to make a giant peace sign; all linking hands as a symbol of how we can all join together to make the world a better place. In fact, some of the school’s foreign exchange students from China joined in as well. “This was a great way to teach the students about world peace, and it leaves a big impression on all the students,” says Mrs McCreery, the school’s Director of Religious Studies.

Photo of rain-loving tui claims top honour

All in all, the making of a giant peace symbol on the school’s field, helped all the students to understand some part of the true meaning of peace, everyone joining together to make the world a better place, and how we can all be peacemakers. The students didn’t stop there though. Peace Week in St Peter’s Catholic also included the making of a ‘Peace Tree’ which students hung prayers on to, a colouring competition, a writing competition and even a peace-themed movie session. As Lucy Eastwood, one of the school’s senior students says, “It was great fun to get together to show the everyone that St Peter’s Catholic is playing their part in striving for World Peace”. The winning Tui photo taken by Robert Hos of Matangi.

A local amateur photographer with a keen eye has taken top spot in this year’s Hamilton Halo photo competition with his image of a rain-loving tui. Matangi resident Robert Hos’s photo was among more than 70 entered into the biennial Hamilton Halo photo competition in July and judged the overall winner recently by a panel of experts. Six years ago when they

first moved onto their Matangi property, Mr Hos and his wife were excited to see one tui. But rat control, part-funded by the regional council and undertaken by the Hos couple and other neighbours in the remnant kahikatea stand known as Wrights Bush, has seen the native bird numbers grow. “We were really excited to see a fledgling last year and at one stage this year we had

eight tui outside our kitchen window,” Mr Hos said. On his win, Mr Hos admitted “most of my photos are very unspectacular, but on this day the lighting was great and I got lucky”. The winner of the People’s Choice Competition – selected from the top five photos via an online poll – was of a bellbird, taken by Suzanne Hutchinson of Te Awamutu.

The great Waipa bal ball l A great ball was held in the new Alexandra Public Hall on the evening of 10 August 1876. It was a grand occasion with more than 100 guests attending. Guests hailed from Ngaruawahia, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Kihikihi, Hamilton East and West, Harapepe, Ohaupo and all the small settlements around Alexandra (now known as Pirongia). According to a Waikato Times reporter, the hall had been decorated with “festoons of evergreens, crossing one another in every direction. Suspended from the centre, the flags of St Andrew’s Cross, and the red, white and blue drooped gracefully over the heads of the dancers”. The greenery was mostly giant ponga and nikau fronds. At one end was a large Union Jack and at the other the British Ensign. Beside the ballroom were a supper room, card room and dressing rooms. The guests started filing into the hall after 7pm. Seats were placed around walls and the floor “had been well waxed”. The small orchestra consisted of a cornopean (type of cornet), ophicleide (predecessor of the tuba), piccolo, clarinet, and piano. The first dance was a quadrille performed by “no less than 40 couples” in rectangular formations.

A programme set out the evening’s 24 dances, a mixture of quadrille, polka, waltz, lancer, cotillion, la varsovianna, galop, Caledonian, mazurka, Schottische and Highland Schottische dances, ending with a “Sir Roger de Coverley”. Halfway through the dance programme there was a rush for the supper room. “For some time your voice was useless, as the clatter of knives and forks, the rushing to and fro of the attendants, the rapid disappearance of viands and liquids of every description, and the confused murmurs of the orthodox supper flirtations were all that could be seen or heard.” During the supper there was a toast to the Queen, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, Sir Donald McLean, the Army and Navy, Colonel William Lyon who was present and the good health of the ladies. The guests then returned to the ballroom and dancing continued. “Daylight was stealing in through the window when the last dance was concluded.”

Scientific success for students By Sophie Iremonger Eighteen Cambridge Middle School (CMS) students made their school and parents proud coming away from the recent Waikato Science Fair with top placings and prizes. Jacob D’Ath and Wiremu Knowles worked together on their project which won overall for year 7s in the “physical world” category. The boys tested “people power” using an alternator to

test which groups of students could generate the most power through cycling. “In the end we found that on average, year 8 girls were better at producing power than anybody else, and you could probably power a home’s LED lights through just riding a bike,” they said. The boys also won “best year 7 exhibit” and took home a cash prize of $420 split between them. Georgia Moess reaped the benefits of working by herself

on her project, taking home the full $420 prize after winning as the overall top year 8 student in the “physical world” category and the top year 8 exhibit. Georgia tested the physics of flight in her project, testing which types of paper planes would fly the best. “The different design, the weight and the size of paper does matter on how it flies in the air,” Georgia explained, adding that the “buzz” paper plane (one with folded corners on the wings), made

Through all the trials and pleasures of a life well lived, Haydn Finbow’s years spent piloting Spitfires during World War Two rank as the most memorable of times. By Viv Posselt

The Spitfire became an iconic Royal Air Force fighter aircraft during the war, having been designed as a short-range, high-performance interceptor aircraft. It was the only British fighter to be in continuous production throughout WW2 – records show there were well over 20,000 of them made. That’s a lot of planes, and a lot of pilots flying them. Haydn was born and raised in the small Suffolk village of Cotton. As he tumbled through an English

countryside childhood with his contemporaries, his eyes were frequently drawn skywards to watch planes flying by as they traced a route between Norwich and Ipswich in the popular air races of the day. They were mainly de Havillands and Tiger Moths, he recalls. “They flew directly over our house. I’d be down there waving madly at them.” He left school at 14 with no clear pathway ahead, and ended up working as an apprentice for an uncle who

was an agricultural engineer. Under his tutelage, Haydn learned about engines, tractors, farm machinery; there were few cars about for youngsters of his age, but everyone had a bike. “We’d go riding on a Sunday. As soon as we heard a truck coming we’d jump off our bikes and watch him go past.” But flying always captured his imagination. The evacuation of Dunkirk was taking place as Haydn was busy working on a farm, and he and other lads around his age were desperate to get involved. “Dunkirk was going full blast. I think most of us were thinking we had to join up and go and stop those Germans.” Keen to turn thoughts into actions, Haydn tried to do just that. He went along to the RAF recruitment office in Ipswich, but was advised to wait a while as he was only 17. “Don’t worry about coming yet, sonny,” he was told, “you wait until you’re older.” He pressed them to be allowed to fill out a form, and just a month later received the news that he had been accepted and that he needed to report to London. His first billet was in accommodation commandeered for the recruits around the London Zoo area, and from there he was sent for further training to the north Welsh market town of Aberystwyth. At this early stage, the trainee pilots hadn’t been allowed within cooee of an aircraft. It was several months

We were sent up to Scotland to board a ship – no more was said. We had no idea where we were going. “But 17 days later we were in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was an awful voyage. We were darting around the Atlantic with the U-boats chasing us. We’d go up 60-foot waves and the ship would sit there perched at the top before plunging down again.” The recruits were moved around a fair bit, ending up in Florida and Georgia where they did further training with the US Army Air Corps before finally getting their wings and being transported back to Britain. Then, because the aircraft they had trained on in the US were different to those being used in

The team soared through pool play unbeaten in their five games to meet Taupo-o-Nui College in the semi-final, winning convincingly with a score of 30-8. The team then went on to win a very close final against Rotorua Girls High School, 21-20. The team is made up of both Year 9 and 10 girls, coached by ex Waikato Magic player Rachel Davis and managed by Michelle McDonald. “It’s a wonderful achievement and shows the depth of talent and promise emerging at Cambridge High Netball,” said Davis.

A decade of dominance for St Peter’s First XI girls’ football The St Peter’s First XI girls’ football team beat Hamilton Girls’ High School (HGHS) last weekend to win the title of Waikato Premier Girls’ Football Champions for the tenth consecutive year – the longest winning streak in the long history of the competition. With both teams missing players (who were overseas with the NZ U16 team), the game could have gone either way. It was a very tense and even start with most of the play happening in the midfield as both teams searched for some quality. St Peter’s players Kate Williams, Brooke Kilmister, Kimbi Rowan-Sanders and

Brie Perry, along with Keeper Amber Harris, ensured that any attempts by HGHS were from distance. Josephine Oosterhuis, Sarah Krystman, Caitlin Burns, Maddie Brown and Olivia Came provided the spark for Striker Lauren Henry to work off. It was nil-all at halftime. However, in the second half, the game started to open-up and St Peter’s gained ascendancy. It took a piece of magic by Kate Williams to settle the match for St Peter’s; she struck a long range free kick, nestling the ball into the top right corner of the net. St Peter’s comfortably saw out the remaining five minutes to win the title.

Young Cambridge cyclists top the world table By Sophie Iremonger Cambridge cyclists Jackson Ogle and Ellesse Andrews rounded off the New Zealand team’s medal haul during the last two days of the UCI Junior World Track Cycling Championships in

Italy over the weekend. 18 year old Ogle won a bronze medal in the junior men’s 1000m time trial on the Montichiari Velodrome on the fifth and final day of the competition, whilst the day before, 17-year-old Andrews claimed a gold medal with a superb

performance in the junior women’s individual pursuit. Ogle clocked 1:02.756 to finish a second behind Russian winner Pavel Perchuk, and a fraction outside his New Zealand Championshipwinning performance, with teammate Josh Scott

(Christchurch) 20th. Andrews won the bronze medal in the individual pursuit at the world championships in Switzerland last year, though her main focus then was on the sprint race, where she won a rainbow jersey. Under the watchful eye of her father Jon, a former Commonwealth Games medallist and Olympian and now the national junior coach, Andrews has fully transitioned to endurance. She was part of the team pursuit that won the silver medal on the first day, and on the fourth day (Sunday NZ time) she earned her fourth world championship medal and her second rainbow jersey. New Zealand’s other medals in the competition were silver and bronze medals earned respectively by the female and male team pursuits.

Some great competition was enjoyed in two recent events. The Ladies Singles was won by Lynette McCheyne with Diane Watts runner up. The Men's Singles went to David Jenkins and Lloyd Nicholson was runner up. The Championship Triples was taken out by two two-person teams. Lynette McCheyne and Bryce Espin are the champions and David Jenkins and Andrea Anderson were second. Congratulations to all involved.

Medal haul for Kenpo students By Sophie Iremonger Mark Robinson’s Cambridge school of Kenpo 5.0 sent a team of 23 students to the Fabian Niwa Kenpo 5.0 memorial tournament in New Plymouth last weekend. After months of training their hard work paid off with a massive team medal haul of 35 trophies from 23 competitors. “It’s really a fantastic result for these guys and thoroughly deserved,” said their Sensei Mark Robinson. “And this is on the back of an extremely strong performance at the Oceania Competition in May.” The Cambridge students performed “amazingly well” across all three base areas of the competition – sparring, selfdefence and “forms and sets”. In addition to their many excellent results in the base competition, five

of the Cambridge students were also selected for the Grand Champion match off. In this intense final Aaron Bruce was able to win his category as well as the overall Grand Champion award. “A fitting tribute to an awesome young man,” said Mark. “Having said that, the judges had a torrid time trying to differentiate between competitors, the standard was so high.” Next on the radar for these Cambridge Kenpo superstars is the annual Kenpo 5.0 International Camp in Las Vegas, taking place next year on July 18. Selection, training and fundraising for that event will start soon. Anyone who would like to learn selfdefence or is interested in being part of the Kenpo 5.0 family is encouraged to contact Mark Robinson on 029 933 3669.

Quiz boosts junior football project By Josh Easby, Cambridge Football Club

Cambridge Football Club’s efforts to provide better playing surfaces for its young players have received a huge boost from this year’s successful RICOH Quiz Night fundraiser. Preliminary figures show the club has raised about $6000 to go towards its Junior Pitches Levelling Project. About 200 enthusiastic supporters of the club took part in the quiz at Cambridge East School on the weekend, combining their knowledge of trivia with raffles, silent auctions and simply having a fun evening. Fittingly, event and club sponsor RICOH also provided the winning quiz team, showing their knowledge of everything from sports and entertainment to geography and history. Club chairman Steve Thomas said this year’s event had been outstanding and he paid tribute to the team of volunteers who organised the event, led by Vanessa Payne, Calleigh Baker, Alistair McQuarters and Jamie McKean. Attendees were superbly coerced by MC Camille Guzwell – co-host of The Breeze breakfast show – into parting with cash for raffles and auctions, while club president Peter Martens once again showed his skills as quizmaster. Volunteers from the club staffed the bar, marked quiz sheets and sold raffles throughout the night. Chairman Thomas thanked all the club sponsors and companies who had donated excellent prizes, all of whom were recognised in a specially-printed 16-page programme for the event. The money raised will go towards the levelling project, which is a long-term plan to raise at least $150,000 so the junior playing fields can be professionally levelled to provide more pitches with excellent playing surfaces. The club currently can utilise less than half the land it has available due to undulation and poor drainage. With the quiz night funds, the club expects to finish this season with about $15,000 set aside for the project. The club’s experience is that once it has raised about $25,000, it can then realistically seek grants from various funders with the knowledge that it has been proactive in leading the project. Raising large amounts of money for the senior clubroom extensions ($200,000) and the construction of the junior clubrooms had shown the importance of establishing a fighting fund through our members’ own efforts.

Reds can clinch football titles this weekend who currently sit third from bottom in the competition. However to take the title on the day, Cambridge need rivals Waikato Unicol and Matamata Swifts to slip up in their games against Otumoetai and Tauranga Old Blues respectively. Even so, Cambridge can make sure of the title a week later in the local derby at Te Awamutu. Cambridge’s apparent stranglehold on the two titles – the highest competitions in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty region – follow two wins at John Kerkhof

By Josh Easby, Cambridge Football Club

Cambridge could wrap up the titles for football’s WaiBOP Premiership and Championship next weekend if results go their way. The Reds can sew up the Championship title with a win against lowly Matamata Swifts at John Kerkhof Park on Saturday, kicking off at 12.30pm. Immediately after, the first team can clinch the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership crown with a win against Rotorua United

Park last Saturday. A 3-0 win against Tauranga Boys’ College has given Cambridge’s first team a sixpoint lead in the Premiership. Cambridge comfortably won despite a scrappy performance, marked by wasted chances and youthful opponents who never stopped chasing. Not known for fast starts, Cambridge took a fifth-minute lead when Andrew Taylor crossed from wide for Callum MacLeod to control and score from an angle. The teams went

into half-time with the score 1-0 but Cambridge took control of the result with a second goal after 52 minutes when Tom Woutersen struck a sweet cross for Jordan Silvester to convert from close in. Ten minutes later, the match was as good as over when Cambridge’s Kieran Hill fired a ball hard and low into the crowded Tauranga area. Remarkably, everyone missed it and the ball sneaked into the far corner of the net for his first goal of the season.

As Cambridge celebrated their win, news arrived that nearest rivals Waikato Unicol had lost 2-1 at home to Matamata Swifts. To be sure of winning the title, Cambridge need to win two of their three remaining games. In the WaiBOP Championship a 4-3 win by Cambridge against nearest rivals Tauranga City United increased the gap to seven points at the top of the table. Leading goalscorer James Cakebread scored Cambridge’s

first goal in the 27th minute. Striker Adam Brady (43rd minute), Jason Szabo (58th) and Levi Clark (72nd) added Cambridge’s others and the side were in control, leading 4-2 with five minutes to go. However the experienced Tauranga side found a late goal and the home side had to withstand a frantic finish before being certain of the points. Player of the Day was Avi Kumar. The win extended the team’s unbeaten run to seven games.

Cambridge Golf Weekend players are contesting the Gloria Gilmore Handicap Matchplay event. On Saturday Viv Hall prevailed over Kathy Miller, and Hannah Myers over Deanna Thompson, both matches going to the 18th, whilst Kay Brennan finally managed the win over Ella Cockburn on the 20th hole. Great even matches. Hannah will play the plate final against Thelma Newman,

and Viv and Kay the main final next week. The course has just reopened after coring of the greens, it is a matter of debate as to whether the sandy surface makes putting easier! Jill Morgan had 75 gross/73 nett so she is in great form to take advantage of the grass growth underfoot, which will be conducive to improved scores by everyone. Wednesday players went to

Okoirore for nine-hole play in very heavy conditions, scores not for publication but they all enjoyed lunch in the dining room afterwards. In September we contest the Championship Matchplay, and finalise the Topcat competition. The warm conditions mean that we will enjoy our golf, and hopefully the winter hibernators will venture back out.

Once a month the Cambridge Society of Arts has a display of one of their artist’s work on ‘the wall’ at the Painting Place on Thornton Road. Our September artist is Nelli Parkyn. Nelli shares her story… Age is no barrier to learning to paint. In my late seventies after putting an earthquake experience in Christchurch 2011 behind me and moving to safer ground in Cambridge, I met retired art teacher, June Penny. June told me I could do it and over my protests started me painting, something I had never done before. Unfortunately June became too ill to continue and I was looking for another group when I was introduced to the Cambridge Society of Arts. As a member for the last three years I have enjoyed watching and learning from more experienced artists and using their examples to set challenges for myself so that I can continue to improve my technique and knowledge. Putaruru College Ball has Hollywood theme Lights, camera, action and with that the Putaruru College Hollywood themed School Ball for 2017 was underway. Senior students from Year 11-13 made their entrances walking the red carpet to enjoy an evening of glamour and excitement, which the Year 13 Ball Committee had feverishly and tireless worked to execute. With the school hall decorated with a Hollywood sign, a fairy light city sky line and tables with

movie reels and Oscar statues, students had the opportunity to have paparazzi moments with a photo booth and professional photographer available. A big congratulations to the school’s Academy Award winning students who took out the honours for the evening of Best Dressed Male, Best Dressed Female, Best Couple, King and Queen of the Ball. – Thank you to Putaruru College for the text and photos.

Cleveland Cherry, Putaruru, is representing New Zealand in the under 21 woodchopping team in Adelaide this September. Strong influences in taking up this sport were his father and grandfather along with longstanding chopping organiser and motivator, George Richards. Cleveland and his dad both took up woodchopping together about three years ago. Cleveland admits that he always wanted to chop after watching the events at A&P shows. During his brief career so far, Cleveland has competed in a number of events including three days in Christchurch where he was second in the under 18 chopping and underhand championships. These events are the top level in New Zealand.

Donations go towards vital scientific research into the causes and treatment of all types of cancer, as well as providing a wide range of support services, for people locally. After a $30m upgrade the motorsport track and entertainment facility, which is located on the northern boundary of the Waikato region and central to both Hamilton and Auckland, was relaunched in late October last year in grand style with a major motorsport event, headlined by the Australian GT series. While it will remain the home of motorsport and car manufacturer events, the venue has been purposely setup to cater corporate functions and conferences.

There are 11 function suites which cater to all group sizes. From the small yet modern meeting rooms located above the pit garages which can seat between 10 and 200 guests, to the Pavilion which can seat up to 400 banquet style, we have rooms to suit all! Hampton Downs’ accommodation offerings are extensive with our affordable four-star apartments available to both corporate and private bookings. Each self-contained accommodation unit boasts two bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen, living room, laundry and trackside balcony – all of which open onto panoramic views of the motorsport park and the Bombay Hills. Each apartment has its

own allocated parking area and each apartment unit has its own allocated car parking space. However, additional parking is available just outside the apartment complex. Our apartments are conveniently located between Auckland and Hamilton. We are located in the North Waikato near Huntly, Mercer and South Auckland. Cancer Society wins at Kaipaki cross-country day By Steph Bell-Jenkins This year’s cross-country run at Kaipaki School was a day Charlotte Cowan, Sophie Wallis and Chloe Browne will probably never forget. “It’s been an amazing day,” said principal Kim Budd on Tuesday afternoon, after her communityminded students raised more than $700 for the Cancer Society. Charlotte came up with the idea of extending her school cross-country race into a run-athon about three weeks ago. “On the day when I thought of it, my mum and another mum from school were talking about her friend who’d just got cancer

and how they were struggling with it,” the 12-year-old said. “That’s how the idea initially came to me. One of our (family) friends also has cancer and my mum’s closest friend’s mum got cancer and died, so I just thought I could give somebody a better chance at living by raising the money.” She talked to her friends Sophie (12) and Chloe (11), who were keen to join in. The trio secured the support of their principal and began meeting with her daily to discuss ideas. “Mrs Budd in particular has been very supportive,” Charlotte said. Over the following weeks the

students committed hours of their own time to the project, putting up posters around school and approaching the Cancer Society, which donated leftover Daffodil Day merchandise to sell. Charlotte and her parents also organised a sausage sizzle. Interviewed the day before the event, the girls said their goal was to raise more than $100 and run 25 laps. Thanks to a massive effort on Tuesday they smashed those targets, collecting more than $400 and completing 64 sponsored laps. Charlotte ran 31 circuits of the school field over the day – more than five times the distance set

for a year eight student – while Sophie did 28. “Basically they ran for most of the day with rest periods in between selling merchandise,” said Kim. “Chloe ran her five laps and was MC for the day, keeping us all informed and entertained. We’re

so proud of them all. There was a lovely atmosphere and the whole community really supported them, whether it was through buying sausages, daffodils, balloons, pens or sponsorship.” Kim said the girls ended the day “totally exhausted” but had enough energy to stand up and

Sun shines for Goodwood school cross country

The Goodwood School Cross Country Championships were held under sunny winter skies on Friday, August 25, making perfect conditions for the school’s 340 students to take part in the annual races. A large crowd of family and friends cheered the runners around the course, which included

local farm land and the traditional hay bale jumps. The top seven runners from each event will be heading to the annual Cambridge Cross Country Championships, featuring all 12 Cambridge primary schools, to be held at the Mighty River Domain, Lake Karapiro, on Friday, September 8.

Enrolment at Leamington School is governed by an enrolment scheme due to the continual enrolment demand from across Cambridge. Due to this continual demand the Board of Trustees have determined that in 2018 there will only be places for: • Students who reside within the Leamington suburb; • Students within the Leamington School enrolment zone; • Siblings of current students who live outside of the enrolment zone; • Up to 4 places for Y2 students who live outside of the enrolment zone. Families are encouraged to pre-enrol their children who start school in 2018 or 2019 to ensure they receive maximum educational benefit from our Kick Start Transition to School program. Details of the zone can be found either on the school website or from the school office. For more information please contact:

Schools kapa haka festival on next week By Sophie Iremonger The annual Combined Cambridge Schools Kapa Haka Festival will return for 2017 next week, on Tuesday, September 5. Hosted by Cambridge High School (CHS), the event will take place in the school hall from 6pm. “The Festival is an opportunity for all participating schools to showcase their talent and to share in the celebrations of the Māori culture,” explained Marcel Kuijpers, CHS Assistant Principal. The fourth annual event will feature kapa haka

groups from nine local schools, engaging in captivating kapa haka and waiata performances to a wide audience open to the public. Entry will be a gold coin donation, all proceeds going to KidsCan. A bake sale on the night will also contribute towards the cause. Performing schools will include Cambridge East Primary, Cambridge Primary, Leamington Primary, Tamahere School, Te Miro School, St Peter’s Catholic School, Cambridge Middle School, St Peter’s School and Cambridge High School.

OUT OF ZONE ENROLMENTS The Goodwood School Board of Trustees invites applications from out of zone parents who wish to enrol their children at Goodwood School for 2018. Enrolment at the school is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available from the school office or website. Applications can be made by collecting an enrolment form from the school office or the Goodwood School Website. The deadline for receipt of applications for out of zone places is 4pm Friday 29th September. The Board has determined that 15 places are likely to be available for out of zone students. The exact number of places will depend on the numbers of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone. If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot as per priority guidelines. If a ballot is required it will be held on Monday 2 October. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three working days of the ballot being held. Please contact the principal David Graham, or school office for further information and an information pack. Phone: 827 6817 email office@goodwood.school.nz, www.goodwood.school.nz

The Kaipaki School Board of Trustees has received a number of enquiries from parents of out of zone students seeking to enrol their children at the school next year. Because the board operates an enrolment scheme, it is required to fill any vacant out of zone places by ballot in cases where there are more applications for enrolment than there are places available. Due to the ongoing success of our school and the construction of new learning spaces, the board has determined that 20 places are likely to be available to out of zone students for enrolment in the Year 1 to Year 6 areas of the school in 2018. The board is prepared to receive applications, in addition to those which it already holds, so long as they reach the school by 29 September 2017. If a ballot is required, it will be held on 02 October 2017.Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held.

Blast of colour By Steph Bell-Jenkins

Goodwood School Pre-school information day Wednesday 6 September

9.00 am – 10.30 am or 6.30 pm – 7.30 pm

There are still a few days left to register for Leamington School’s Colour Blast, a fun family event to be held at Mighty River Domain at Lake Karapiro on Saturday, September 16. Hosted by the school’s PTA, the morning kicks off at 10am and is open to everyone. Participants will make their way around an easy course at the domain while being blasted with brightly coloured powder at five different stations. “You don’t have to run; you can walk, hop, skip, dance or anything you like,” said Selina Eason, one of the organisers. “Everyone is welcome – young and old, grandparents, other schools – anyone who wants to get out there and have a bit of fun.” The coloured powder is designed to wash out, but participants are advised to wear old clothing

in case it leaves marks. Those after a keepsake from the event will be able to purchase Colour Blast t-shirts. “There will be spot prizes and food for sale, including a sausage sizzle, popcorn, hot donuts and candyfloss,” Selina said. Five event photographers will be taking photographs on the day and these will be displayed on Facebook and available for purchase at Kodak Express in Victoria St. Tickets cost $20 for people aged 13 and over, $15 for children aged 5-12 and $50 for a family of four. Under-fives are free with a paying adult. Selina is urging anyone interested to register over the next few days, so the organisers have time to order the coloured powder before the event. For more information, visit www.leamington. school.nz or search Leamington School Colour Blast on Facebook.

Pre-school children and their families are warmly invited to join us on the morning or evening of Wednesday 6th September to meet our team and to learn about our transition to school programme. MOTORING

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 1, 2017

Supercross returns to Tokoroa By Andy McGechan, www. BikesportNZ.com

The 2017 New Zealand Supercross Championships season is set to be a thriller. The annual national championship has been expanded this year and the blast-off date is fast approaching, both rounds

of the 2017 series set for late October. The sport, perhaps best described as "motocross on steroids", with all the floodlit evening action crammed into an area no bigger than a rugby field, had been scaled back over recent years as riders were either daunted by the extreme

nature of the action or perhaps they were simply spoiled for choice with so many alternative motorcycling activities demanding their attention. From a four-round series in 2011, it was scaled back to three rounds in 2012, then reduced to two rounds in 2013. For the past four years it was

further diminished, down to a one-night affair, although each time at the South Island's fabulous Cooper-Vetsouth Supercross Track at 243 Ryan Road, in Winton. The sport's governing body, Motorcycling New Zealand (MNZ), is now thrilled to announce that the 2017

Action from Tokoroa in December 2010, when the South Waikato forestry town last hosted a round of the New Zealand Supercross Championships. Photo by Andy McGechan, BikesportNZ.com

edition of the championships has been boosted again to two rounds, one in the North Island and one in the South Island. Round one will be at the South Waikato Motorcycle Club's resurrected supercross track at Amisfield, on the Monday afternoon of Labour Weekend, October 23. Round two will be a week later, on October 28, and hosted again by the Southland Motorcycle Club at its Winton facility. MNZ general manager Virginia Henderson said she was "very excited to see the sport of supercross showing a growth surge". "We have received a great commitment from all the race teams and they are happy with the dates. The decision to again have the championships over two rounds was not made by MNZ alone, but in collaboration with all the stakeholders," she said. Bay of Plenty's former United States supercross champion Ben Townley, who was last year's national supercross champion in the senior open class, has made himself available to help steer the redevelopment. "I won't be defending my New Zealand supercross

crown," said Townley. "I'm just going to be doing what I can from the sidelines to support the sport's growth and get it re-established." Using the archery analogy, Townley said that having supercross skills "added an extra string to the bow" for young riders hoping to pursue an international motocross or supercross career. "It's almost a requirement now for motocross riders heading overseas that they can race supercross as well. Certainly in the United States… that goes without saying. "We need rider support (for supercross in New Zealand) and that's what it's lacked in recent years. I hope I can help provide the platform for that support to happen." The purpose-built track at Tokoroa will "use the same footprint" that was first created back in the 1980s – Tokoroa having built New Zealand's first dedicated supercross circuit in 1989 – but Townley said the jumps would be totally rebuilt. Huge crowds turned out for supercross events at Tokoroa in the 1990s, and through until the 2010-11 season opener there in December 2010, and MNZ hopes the sport can again bask in that glory.

GIRL’S TRIP

A rare R-rated comedy that pushes boundaries to truly comedic effect and anchors its laughs in compelling characters brought to life by a brilliantly assembled cast. Best friends Ryan, Sasha, Lisa and Dina are in for the adventure of a lifetime when they travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival. Along the way, they rekindle their sisterhood and rediscover their wild side by doing enough dancing, drinking, brawling and romancing to make the Big Easy blush.

LOGAN LUCKY

The Logans are a hardscrabble family from the hills of West Virginia, and their clan has been famous for its bad luck for nearly 90 years. But the conniving Jimmy Logan decides it’s time to turn the family's luck around, and with a little help from his friends, the Redneck Robbers, he plans to steal $14 million from the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The film stars Katherine Waterston, Daniel Craig, Channing Tatum, Hilary Swank, Adam Driver and Seth MacFarlane.
