Cancer survivor using success to help others By Sophie Iremonger “Being 15 years old I didn’t really have an appreciation for what was going on, I could see by the way they were reacting that it was a big deal, it’s only looking back now that I can process the magnitude of it,” says Toby Cunliffe-Steel, who at 15 years old was sitting in a highway-side café in a dressing gown, hooked up to an IV, being told that he had a brain tumour. A few minutes earlier he had woken up in an ambulance on its way to Starship hospital, with no idea what was going on. “I just saw a strange lady next to me and another lady driving, didn’t know where I was, I said ‘where are my parents, stop!’ I was freaking out a bit,” says Toby as he laughs at what was undoubtedly the strangest day of his life. “They said ‘it’s okay, your parents are in the car behind us’, and they pulled over at this café and explained everything.”

Up until that point, Toby thought he had an ear infection “or something”, having endured increasing trouble with his balance, motor skills, and severe headaches and nausea when getting up or laying down. When antibiotics didn’t help he underwent a CAT scan, which proved difficult when he threw up on himself whilst inside the machine! “You should have seen these nurses, I don’t think I had ever seen them move so fast,” Toby laughs. What Toby didn’t realise at the time was that the nurses had just started to find a brain tumour in his cerebellum. Once the scan was completed he was admitted to Tauranga Hospital, hooked up to an IV, pumped with fluids and was just drifting off to sleep when the doctor came in to give his parents what was probably the worst news of their lives. Cancer survivor using success to help others Continued from page 1 After making their way to Starship hospital – with a quick stop at the Copper Kettle Cafe in Ngatea – Toby was soon taken into surgery and the tumour was completely removed. “I am really, really incredibly fortunate that it was in a place where it could be operated on, and I have had minimal repercussions since,” says Toby. “It made me appreciate how lucky I am, and also how easily life can end, and how little we have control of that. “So that had a massive impact on my life, it shaped

my character and encouraged me from that point on to really dedicate myself to the things that I undertake.” That was back in 2007. Having already been involved in school rowing for two years at Tauranga Boys College, Toby began to “really dedicate” himself to his rowing pursuits and just a year and a half later he made his first New Zealand team. And the rest is history! Now as a world-silvermedallist lightweight rower, the Cambridge local is using his Kiwi celebrity status as a way to give back as much as he can.

“I got in touch and said, ‘how can I help’ and now I’m just promoting it as much as I can, it’s going to be a really awesome night,” says Toby. The event has almost sold out already, with well over 500 people set to attend. Toby and a team of enthusiastic volunteers will be there on the night, running the huge range of live auctions and silent auctions. Solo singer Kate Oatway, also a cancer survivor, will perform on the night, and the popular band Late 80s Mercedes will get the party started after the dinner and auction evening. “I’m really fortunate that I’ve gotten to a place where I have a platform, I can reach large amounts of people, so why not use that to help these groups that have made a world of difference for people like me.” Toby has already helped out in several charity ventures, including with the Make a Wish Foundation and Child Cancer. Last year he teamed up with the Waikato Bay of Plenty Cancer Society to support their Relay for Life. This year the WaiBOP Cancer Society is putting on a truly “epic” night of entertainment with the Cancer Society Ball, being held at Mystery Creek on August 5th.

Proposed military museum could become New Zealand enclave in Europe A Bastille Day gathering at Cambridge’s St Andrew’s Church launched an awareness and fundraising campaign aimed at establishing a permanent New Zealand Memorial Museum in our French sister city, Le Quesnoy. By Viv Posselt The gathering launched the New Zealand Memorial Museum Trust’s project to purchase and develop a museum in the town as a permanent record for future generations. The choice of Le Quesnoy as its site acknowledges not only the sacrifice of those involved in liberating the town in 1918, but also marks the forging of New Zealand’s broader military heritage and national identity. New Zealand infantry troops liberated Le Quesnoy from German occupation on November 4, 1918, when soldiers used a ladder to climb the town walls. The ensuing battle resulted in 122 New Zealand deaths, with many of those having survived Gallipoli, the Somme and Passchendaele only to be lost within a week of the November 11 Armistice. Herb Farrant, founder

and secretary general of the New Zealand War Memorial Museum Trust, said that bringing the museum project to fruition marked years of hard work. He said New Zealand’s international military reputation had not been established by the 1914 onset of World War 1, but Kiwi participation during both world wars led to a unique national identity being forged and universal recognition given to the commitment of New Zealand soldiers – one made more extraordinary because of the country’s small population at the time. He described WW1 as “the great juggernaut of history which changed forever those drawn into the conflict half a world away”. New Zealand became heavily involved, and the museum project presented an opportunity to “permanently record,

remember and honour the memory of our country’s fittest and finest” who fought in both world wars. The time to do that was now, as the 1918 centenary marking the end of WW1 approaches and with it a risk that its lessons might be increasingly forgotten. “History’s teachings show that everything we value and treasure will at some time need to be defended against aggression. We know this today when we face the situation of global terrorism.” The $15 million museum project seeks to purchase and develop a 19th century property in Le Quesnoy. Once the residence of the town’s mayor, it became the local gendarmerie in 1952. Plans are to develop former staff housing surrounding the historic homestead into visitor accommodation, and

Pictured after the launch are, from left, NZ War Memorial Museum Trust founder Herb Farrant; Cambridge Community Board chairman Mike Pettit; Colin Averill, son of the man who in 1918 was first to scale the wall surrounding Le Quesnoy; and Waipa District Mayor Jim Mylchreest.

build a modern new annex as exhibition space. Together the old residence and annex will form the museum that will tell Kiwi soldiers’ stories, and exhibit collections from both world wars. It is hoped fundraising efforts will enable the property to be purchased, and for the first stage to be developed by November 4, 1918 – in time to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the liberation of Le Quesnoy. Waipa District Mayor Jim Mylchreest congratulated the Trust for promoting the project and said it had particular relevance to Cambridge as its sister-city connection with Le Quesnoy had engendered a close friendship between the two towns. “Cambridge will work with the Trust and with

central government to ensure this project is successfully completed.” Cambridge Community Board chairman Mike Pettit described it as a “significant project of historical current and future importance to all New Zealanders and the people of Le Quesnoy”. NZ War Memorial Trust chairman Greg Moyle said half of all New Zealanders who died on active service during the 20th century were buried in the fields of Europe, and said the events leading to those deaths were in danger of becoming forgotten. Also attending the launch was Colin Averill, whose father was the first Kiwi soldier to get to the top of the ladder and over the ramparts at Le Quesnoy.

Mr Averill suggested his father, who died in 1981, would likely be overwhelmed at how much attention this one action had generated over the years. He had been a 19-year-old medical intern in Auckland when he and a friend had joined up – his friend was never to return from battle. “It is likely that my father was just an impulsive 21-year-old keen to get on the ladder first.” Those present watched a video message of support from Le Quesnoy Mayor, MarieSophie Lesne, and listened to readings by Cambridge High and St Peter’s school students. They also heard first-hand accounts of visits to Le Quesnoy from Sarah Ulmer and Madeline Wilson, and were accompanied by music from the Cambridge Brass Band.

New brand for Cambridge revealed By Sophie Iremonger Cambridge has a new brand, launched last week at a special stakeholders event at the Town Hall. Waipa District Council, the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce and Destination Cambridge worked together to develop the new brand for Cambridge, based on the public feedback of “What makes Cambridge unique.” “The process started in February last year with a series of workshops that resulted in the community identifying the strengths of Cambridge as a destination and the values and character that the brand should possess,” explained Roger Gordon, CEO of Destination Cambridge. “The design work was undertaken by Big Group in Auckland with the Brand Guidelines produced by a Foreverafter in Auckland.” The funding for the work was principally provided by Waipa District Council with great contributions from the Lions Club of Cambridge, the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce and Destination Cambridge. The new brand features a colourful, handpainted style “C” for Cambridge, accompanied by the slogan “let go” written in a freestyle type font. “We’ve got a unique font style, with the brand image, C for Cambridge, but then associated with that is a font style that allows us to capture real, positive and active experiences,” Roger explained at the ‘big reveal’.

Following the adoption of the brand guidelines, Destination Cambridge was able to incorporate the new brand into their new website, which was also launched at last week’s event. “In the imagery we’re using with this, we have people enjoying the experience of Cambridge. The background of the images is slightly and intentionally blended out so that it’s the experience and the activity which comes to the fore. “Overall, it has been a real community exercise. Future governance of the brand will be undertaken jointly by the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce and Destination Cambridge,” Roger said. “We welcome any feedback on this exciting new initiative.” The new website can be viewed at new.cambridge.co.nz.

The Bastille Day hub attracted many visitors.

A bevy of berets on Bastille Day

You didn’t have to go far to spot a beret in Cambridge last week. That’s because Friday was Bastille Day, a day when Cambridge celebrated its French connection. That connection is Cambridge’s French sister city, Le Quesnoy. Despite New Zealand being mid-winter, in contrast to France’s midsummer, the winter chill didn’t hamper people’s enthusiasm for going French for the day. From berets and french moustaches in New World, to delicious French food in cafes, and French-style stripey tops in many shops. At night there were things happening too – including at Alpino Restaurant, which was packed out with people enjoying a beautiful French meal. During the day, the Cambridge-Le Quesnoy Sister City committee organised the “Bonjour Couch” as the hub

for the day. There were lots of activities and competitions that were popular with the kids – including a “guess the cheese” competition, the Eiffel Tower Challenge, as well as a croissant and shoppers’ competition. The poodle promenade saw four French pooches walking the red carpet. And throughout the day there was a steady stream of people munching croissants on the couch, and being videoed for Cambridge’s “Can you say Le Quesnoy” video. Julie Epps, from the Cambridge - Le Quesnoy Sister City Committee said, “The response to the Le Quesnoy video has been great. I think a lot more people know how to say ‘Le Quesnoy’ now, and we want to thank everyone for really getting into the spirit of it. We launched the video online a week before Bastille Day and it had over 7000 views then. Then on Bastille Day we had loads of

people, of all ages, who came along especially to sit on the Bonjour Couch and tell us how they say Le Quesnoy.” Another “French” event was a fencing demonstration by the Waikato Swords Club. Julie said, “The fencing drew quite an audience. I had never been at a live demonstration before, so it was fascinating to watch. It’s such a fast, adrenalin-packed sport, but it’s obviously very tactical too. And Mike Angelo from the Swords Club was great at demonstrating all the different types of swords, and explaining which sword did what.” Congratulations to the winners of the following Bonjour Bastille Day competitions… Croissants on the couch competition: Sam, aged 6. Eiffel Tower Challenge: Stella Teesdale. “What’s that cheese” competition: Anna Crouchman (child)

Letter to the editor The white cross I must disagree with my friend and colleague Brian Dunstan regarding replacing the illuminated cross in Cambridge. It may have been accepted in the 1950/60 but the Cambridge in that time was mainly populated by the various sects of Christians. However today Cambridge is made up of many different religions some who would feel quite uncomfortable having a Cross projected over them. I firmly believe that if our council has spare money to spend on religious concerns it would be better spent asking another Christian group like the Salvation Army to help the homeless and people living in poverty. Now that would be an act kindness. By the way I’m an atheist. T John Marshall

Hautapu’s Blue Ribbon day raises $26K

By Sophie Iremonger The culmination of a massive community effort between Hautapu Rugby and the Cambridge Prostate Cancer Support Group was officially recognised last week with the handover of a huge cheque to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand. The funds, $26,366.90 to be exact, were the total amount raised during last month’s Hautapu Blue Ribbon Day and its associated fundraising efforts, made possible through the collaboration of various members of the community. Hautapu Club member Phil Herewini, who originally conceived the idea, said it was thanks to all of the generous donations and efforts made by the many people involved that enabled the event to be such a success. “And we achieved what we wanted to do, just to promote awareness of prostate cancer,” Phil said. “Rugby is quite a male-dominated sport, and obviously prostate cancer is a male disease, so it all worked in perfectly. I’m

just astounded by what we achieved as a group.” Phil said he was also quite surprised at the total amount of funds raised through the event. “I would have maybe expected 15 thousand tops, it was just awesome,” he said. It didn’t take long for a group of Hautapu Club members to get the ball rolling after their first initial meeting on the Hautapu Blue Ribbon Day. Phil approached Graeme Montgomery, Support Group Coordinator for the Cambridge Prostate Cancer Support Group (CPCSG), and the group was very happy to get involved. The CPCSG fundraised for the event and ran several raffles thanks to the generous support of local businesses and members of the CPCSG. “The Cambridge Prostate Cancer Support Group, in conjunction with PCFNZ, is indeed much indebted to the Hautapu Rugby Club, and those who generously gifted and/or supported us in a variety of ways, big or small,” said CPCSG Coordinator

Graeme Montgomery, “especially those who dug deep into their pockets at the auction, which was both a rewarding success and a pleasure to be involved in. The whole event was really an unbelievable fundraising effort, extremely well supported by the Cambridge community.” The Cambridge Rugby Sub Union allowed the CPCSG to run the gate and retain the proceeds during the Blue Ribbon Day charity match. That combined with the CPCSG’s raffles and donations (totalling $5000+), along with the huge success of the auction night, made up the impressive total of $26,366.90. A big contributor to the auction was the collection of specially-designed rugby jerseys donated by Paladin Sports, worn by the Hautapu premier team during the day’s charity match. They were each auctioned off to raise a huge total of $21,350. The Hautapu clubrooms were packed out for the event on June 10 with an estimation of over 400 people in

attendance. Auctioneer for the night, local Harcourts owner Kevin Deane, made quite a difference in selling the items for the best bid. “To be fair he probably made the night,” said Phil. “He generated the atmosphere and got people to reach deep in their pockets.” Ex All Black Buck Shelford was also a popular crowdpleaser on the night, making an appearance as the NZ ambassador for prostate cancer. At the cheque handover last week, Prostate Cancer NZ Foundation CEO Graeme Woodside said, “On behalf of the Prostate Cancer Foundation I want to thank all those from the Cambridge community who supported the recent charity game organised by Hautapu Rugby Club. This is a huge contribution to our work in raising awareness, supporting men with prostate FIGURE 3.2.1 cancer, and funding research. “Prostate Cancer is the number one cancer in New Zealand men. More men get prostate cancer than women get breast cancer. Men over 50 should ask their GP for a check each year – early detection is the key to better outcomes and avoiding the effects of advanced disease.” CPCSG wished to thank the many businesses and people who contributed towards the event, including Cambridge Mitre 10 Mega, 1-Day Voucher, Torpedo 7, Waikato Farm Source Store, Onyx Café & Bar, Kevin Booth (Solicitor), FIGURE 3.2.3 Jointwood Products, Challenge Rockgas Service Station, Little Flower & Gift Shop, Lee & McMillan Panel and Paint Ltd, Unichem Cambridge, Toyworld, Oderings Nurseries, and Wraptrade NZ Ltd.

Students showcase their ‘Maker Movement’ products

By Emelyn Mchardy Senior students from Cambridge Primary School show cased their products from their ‘Maker Movement’ programme last Monday, displaying an array of products from yarn art to their own video games, which teacher Liam Carroll said they made by themselves. “One of the big ideas around the Maker Movement is it needs to be quite self-directed,” Carroll said. “So we tell the kids how to go through a planning process and how to come up with an idea, but also how to trial and error… And there’ll be a little bit of very brief instruction on how to use it.” The Rutherford syndicate of the school, which includes years 4-6, had been working on their projects for nine weeks. The students were allowed to pick the discipline they wanted to work with which was broken up between the five Rutherford teachers. Students could choose from yarn bombing, electronics, stop motion, engineering and coding. One student, Gabrielle Hill (year 6) made a stop motion video on “How to make a cup cake”. Hill was in a group by herself, but

felt more confident in her abilities to make a stop motion video having studied the subject last year. Rutherford teacher Sophie Dewstow-Wright said they first implemented the programme last year as they needed a hands-on based learning programme. “We really found last year that we needed to do a big hands on kind of shift with our learning,” Dewstow-Wright said. “So we came up with this programme and then the children loved it so much that we did it again this year.”

By Emelyn Mchardy Karapiro Primary School entered three teams in the recent EPRO8 Challenge held in Matamata, where two of the Karapiro teams made it through to the semi finals in Morrinsville. From there, the team “Chemical Collaborators” won over the judges to make it through to the regional finals in Hamilton. Being the school’s first attempt at the challenge, the Karapiro teachers supporting the year 5 and 6 teams were happily surprised to see that two out their three teams made it through the first heat. “We couldn’t believe it, it was very well done,” said teacher Linda Woulfe. Leading into the competition the Karapiro students prepared themselves using a practice sheet from the Epro8 organisers to give them an idea of what they would be up against, Woulfe said the children were very motivated. This is the second year the challenge has been in the Waikato and already organisers have seen a huge growth in numbers. “Last year we had about 100 teams involved loosely in the Waikato, this year it’s about 160 teams in the Waikato,” said one of the event organisers, Andrew Thiele.

St Peter’s Catholic School under the spotlight

Submitted by St Peter’s Catholic School The excitement was building as St Peter’s Catholic School prepared for their first performance of “Noah the Musical”. Students were busy getting ready as the seats outside the huge red curtain began to fill up. All 170 students worked very hard this term ensuring that they gave a polished performance, and the audience were not disappointed. “School Productions are a great opportunity for our students to shine, a chance for them to experience success. The teachers and students have spent the last term working towards the performances, and they did a fantastic job. It’s created a really positive

buzz amongst the school community,” said Grant Stuart, Principal of St Peter’s Catholic School. “It’s been a community effort to make this show happen, and we would like to thank the Waipa District Council Creative Communities Scheme for their generous grant for without that, the show wouldn’t have

taken place.” Lachlan Kerr, playing the character of Guardian Angel, said, “I think school productions provide us with an opportunity to showcase our full potential and talents.” After three performances over two days, the students were looking forward to a wellearned holiday.

Oui should be learning French By Emelyn McHardy Cambridge celebrated Bastille Day recently, strengthening its relationship with sister city Le Quesnoy. It also begged the question: How many Cambridge locals know French? Former Cambridge Highschool student Laura Hetherington loves the French language and says we should all make an effort to learn another language. “I think it’s very important to know another language,” says Hetherington. “Our world is so culturally diverse and I love the process of learning a language, it opens up the opportunity to also learn about a new culture.” Hetherington has just come back from spending nearly year in France, and says it was just what she needed to fully immerse herself in the language. “I love the fact that I can now communicate with people in an entirely different language,” Hetherington said. “That’s why it

was so important for me to live in France and be fully immersed in the culture and language. “There is a wide range of vocabulary to learn but that just comes with experience and time. And when you’re in the country, that’s the best opportunity to learn more obscure words. “For example, I was staying in the university residence and needed to look up the word for light bulb, because mine had stopped working! Those were the sort of everyday situations when I would learn the most. Now, the word for lightbulb, ‘l’ampoule’, is grained in my brain and will never be forgotten!” Now living back in Cambridge, Laura loves Cambridge’s strong connection to France and our town’s special celebration of Bastille Day. “I definitely feel I have a much stronger interest in Bastille Day now that I have lived in France for a year. It’s really nice to see it

being celebrated here, on other side of the world.” “Even though the weather wasn’t the best it was great to see people enjoying the festivities put on by the Cambridge-Le Quesnoy French Association. The fencing demonstration was certainly something I have never seen before! And I just loved seeing the French flag colours used to light up the town clock. It’s really great that a small town like Cambridge has such a strong connection to France.”

Health, Hormones and Happiness in Menopause Seminar

FRIDAY JULY 21, 2017

Seventh win in row puts club in prime position By Josh Easby, Cambridge Football Club Cambridge have won a fivegoal thriller at John Kerkhof Park to take the initiative in the battle for football’s Loaded WaiBOP Premiership. Cambridge beat competition leaders Waikato Unicol 3-2 to move into second place, just two points behind the Hamilton side but having played one game fewer. This is a major turnaround from a month ago when Cambridge were 11 points adrift of Unicol who were unbeaten at the time. Since then, Cambridge have extended their winning run to seven games while Unicol have lost three in a row. With so much at stake, Cambridge were anxious to start well but it was Unicol who got off to a flyer with Simon Gibson opening the scoring just three minutes into the match. Cambridge fought their way back into the game when Jordy Silvester equalised in the 26th minute. Defender Matt Wheeler – temporarily back from playing college football in the United States – then headed Cambridge into a 2-1 lead two minutes before half-time. Unicol raised their efforts

after the break and levelled the score in the 48th minute through Van Ewart. But teenager Josh Clarkin, in his first season of first team football, grabbed the winner in the 83rd minute. The final minutes of the game were full of tension and referee Stu Blake sent off a Unicol player, and then ordered their coach from the dug out. Finally, to the relief of the home crowd, the whistle went and Cambridge had moved into the league’s second spot, well-placed to mount a challenge for the title it last won in 2015. The club’s second team did not play due to several players being away on representative duty for WaiBOP (Waikato/ Bay of Plenty) at the national futsal championships. As with the first team, Cambridge are in a strong position to win the WaiBOP Championship. Despite not playing, Cambridge remain in second place on the table, a point behind leaders Unicol but with a game in hand. Cambridge’s A team lost 4-1 at Melville United, after the teams were tied 1-1 at the break. The B team lost 5-1 to Melville

United after a poor first half performance saw the Hamilton side ahead by 4-1. Cambridge’s goal was scored by Jason Szabo after 11 minutes. The B team were reduced to 10 men after an hour when Mitchell Claridge was given a red card. Cambridge B get the chance to redeem themselves against the same Melville side when they meet in the semi-final of the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup on August 12. Meanwhile, Cambridge have kept their 100% winning start to the WaiBOP Women’s Premier League with a 4-3 win against Melville United. Cambridge raced to a 3-1 lead by half-time and then withstood a Melville fightback at John Kerkhof Park to take the league points. Scorers for Cambridge were Andrea Rogers, Jess Crowe, Astrid Howarth and Sophee Rapson-Jones. Having already secured the Waikato Women’s League title, Cambridge now have two wins from two fixtures in the Premier League, a competition for the four best performing clubs in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. This coming Sunday, Cambridge host Melville United’s second team in the competition (kick off 11am).

Hautapu misses finals despite big win Submitted by the Hautapu Sports Club Premiers This week we travelled to Matamata to play the last game of round 2 - needing to win with a four-try bonus point, and have Fraser Tech beat Otorohanga in order to have any chance of making the top four and semi-finals the following week. Fielding one of our strongest teams of the second round, the players were

hoping to play a high tempo game and enjoy the occasion. It didn’t take long to open the scoring and Hautapu quickly had three tries on the board and were dictating the play in every aspect of the game. Matamata were never in this game and the score board quickly put this game and the four try bonus beyond doubt. Hautapu winning 79-7. Unfortunately Otorohanga beat Tech, leaving Hautapu

Battle of the Bridge coming up By Sophie Iremonger The classic club rugby match that captivates Cambridge for the day will be back next month at the Leamington Rugby Club: the 2017 Battle of the Bridge. This year it’s Leamington’s turn to host the annual event, set for Saturday August 19. The tournament will see Cambridge’s two major sports clubs, Hautapu and Leamington, go head to head in a game of rugby played by their senior reserve teams, known as the “Leamington Loonies” and “Hautapu Hopefools”. All players are over the age of 35, and some will be over 50, so it’s sure to be entertaining! If you’re heading along to watch the match, wear your red or blue support colours and be prepared to volunteer for your club in the half time tug-o-war match, a time-old tradition which was resurrected at the 2014 event after a 20 year hiatus. Generally, anyone who lives on the Cambridge side of the bridge is traditionally considered a Hautapu supporter, and anyone who lives on the Leamington side are with Leamington, but of course it’s each to their own. Another big highlight of the day is a netball match between

the two clubs, played by senior teams of lovely ladies who never fail to dress in full theme! Crowds in the past have numbered over 1500 and organisers hope to see a strong show of support once again this year. It’s sure to be entertaining as the two clubs go head to head with years of fun rivalry between them. Entry is just a gold coin

donation, with plenty of entertainment available for the kids as well as hot food and cold drinks. As usual the day will be capped off with a prizegiving and huge party for all to enjoy in the clubrooms. For more details contact: Mark Nogaj on 027 552 5345, Mike Cochrane on 027 608 2081, or visit the “Battle of the bridge” page on Facebook.

Cambridge sailor second in Youth America Cup

CAMBRIDGE NEWS | 13

Cambridge Welcomes Cedric I bring 8 years of strong experience in the real estate industry. Owner of 2 real estate agencies on the French Riviera, I used to manage a team of 9 agents and was myself a registered valuer in France.

By Emelyn McHardy Cambridge’s very own Micah Wilkinson (pictured right) made his country proud recently as part of the NZ team that finished in a close second-place at the Red Bull Youth Americas Cup. The 21 year old was competing for the first time in the competition but is no stranger to sailing on the international stage, having finished first last year alongside team mate Olivia Mackay in the Red Bull Foiling Generation World Final. Micah said he was quite excited heading into the competition, ready to put his skills to the test having trained in Yachting NZ’s “Fast Track” programme, and keen to learn from the other five Kiwi sailors on the team, aged 19-25. “Being part of the Youth Americas Cup was an awesome experience,” Micah said. “We had some great New Zealanders onboard and it was cool to be surrounded by sailors that will go on to be part of Team New Zealand in years to come.” The team sailed in the same AC45 foiling catamarans that the America’s Cup teams competed in, which can reach speeds of at least 68kmh. Micah said he had a great time while being a tactician on board, and met some great people. “We had some great New Zealanders onboard, it was cool to be surrounded by sailors that will go on to be part of Team New Zealand in years to come.” He said finishing in second place was not too far from what thought they would achieve. “The Kiwi team which included Peter Burling, Blair Tuke and Andy Maloney won (the Youth America’s Cup) in San Francisco four years ago, so there was an expectation we should go well,” Wilkinson said. “Unfortunately for the team, the Land Rover BAR Academy (the British team) stole the win away from us in the last race with a two-point lead.”

Rounding off the competition with 48 points, they finished six points ahead of the thirdplaced Swiss team. Micah says his next and ultimate aim is to compete in the America’s Cup. “The Americas Cup is the pinnacle of sailing and with it being in New Zealand next time around it would be my dream to be onboard in home waters,” said Wilkinson, who also aims to take home a gold medal in Tokyo 2020 before competing in the Cup. For now he’s back to focusing on his Olympic sailing, currently taking part in a four-month tour of Europe in preparation for the Nacra 17 Worlds event in France at the start of September.

Submitted by the Cambridge Bowling Club A very successful day was held at the Cambridge Bowling Club’s Open Triples tournament on Tuesday 11th July. Teams from Thames, Arapuni, Te Awamutu, Pirongia, Frankton Junction & Cambridge Central as well as our own teams competed on our excellent carpet green. A beautiful day emerged once the sun had burned off, the fog and got quite warm in the afternoon before the cold once more reminded us that it was winter after all. But by that time we were all inside the clubrooms having earned and

enjoying a lovely afternoon tea. Murray Olsen’s team from Arapuni took out 1st prize with four wins 22 ends and 49 points. Bill Dawson’s team from Central were a close second with four wins 21 ends and 48 points. Vic Read’s team composite were third also with four wins 21 ends and 41 points. We would like to thank Comins Plumbing & Gas for their very generous sponsorship for the day which made it possible to award the great prizes to our winners. Our next Tournament is on Tuesday, August 8th.

The “Veteran’s” (men 55+ & women 50+) weekly Tuesday round, 11th July: The Vets played a golf competition called “Russian Roulette” using the computer to draw partners. Players had to finish their game and get back to the clubhouse to find out which partner they had drawn. In this competition, where 2 players have their stableford scores multiplied together for each hole, 65 is considered a good score. The best partnership for the day was Russell Johnson and Tim Bodle scoring a massive 81 stableford points, followed by Denys Allen and Jan Mackenzie with 71 points, Karen Bodle and Michael Ford 68 points and Ken Mackenzie with Michael Brace scoring 65 stableford points. Three players scored two’s. Ann Thompson and David Donnelly on the 8th hole and Dennis Clark on the 17th. Steve Haggie won the competition for getting nearest to the 9th pin for 3 shots off the tee and Stuart Hale won the longest putt on the 18th green.

The women’s group (weekly Wednesday & Saturday rounds) recent report: The predicted winter chill and rain from the south stayed away to allow 28 ladies (18 and 9 hole players) to enjoy their weekly outing on the 12th July. Some tricky pin placements challenged putting skills. Julie Redgate top scored with 39 stableford points followed by Judy Higgins 35 and Fiona Soanes 34. The drive and putt competition was easily won by Judy with 43pts and Julie runner-up with 31. The 9 Hole ladies played American

Stableford with par, birdie and bogey taken into consideration with their handicaps. Barbara Godfrey won the ‘Simply Divine’ voucher with 29 points and Marion Peterson, Anne Galbraith, June Bridgland, Kerry Johnstone and Joy Bell all with 28. The annual Masters two-day tournament saw several ladies competing over the weekend of the 15th/16th. Ladies gross winner went to Jill Morgan, nett winner: Fiona Soanes, and stableford winner: Julie Redgate. Congratulations to all our club prize winners.

Championship Pairs played at Hautapu Submitted by the Hautapu Sports Indoor Bowling Club Last week saw the completion of our Championship Pairs. There were 3 pairs qualified for post section play: Diane Watt & Lloyd Nicholson, David Jenkins & Val Massey, and Steve Smith & Peggy Garrett. Diane and Lloyd had the bye in the first round and Steve and Peggy defeated David and Val. The final was won by Steve and Peggy. Well done. Steve topped off a good night by also winning the raffle.

Ghost Elm (Ulmus carpinifolia variegata)

With its green and cream summer foliage giving it a unique silvery appearance, this is my favourite elm by a country mile, and fortunately it is also a very good street tree. Enduring poor soil and air pollution, it reaches to only about 15 metres with no great spread, and in autumn it turns a lovely soft yellow, as shown in this photo taken outside the Cambridge swimming pool. The genus appeared about 20 million years ago in central Asia and 30 or 40 species of elm have since spread over most of the Northern hemisphere. However, in recent decades Dutch elm disease, a microfungus spread by bark beetles, has decimated the great elms of Europe and North America. Elm wood has an interlocking grain which makes it resistant to splitting. It has been used for making wheel hubs, chair seats, coffins, drums and long bows. In medieval Europe the trunks were used as water pipes as the wood is resistant to decay when permanently wet. Elm bark cut in strips and boiled produces a mucilaginous porridge containing a little fatty acid and sugars; this unappetising mess is said to have kept the wretched peasants alive during the Great Famine of 1812 in Norway. In Italy elms were planted as support for vines; the trees were lopped at three metres and the twiggy regrowth laterals used as vine supports. Thus the ancients spoke of the ‘marriage’ between the elm and the vine, in which the elm is a masculine symbol. This theme is also found in English literature, notably in A Midsummer Night’s Dream when Titania addresses her beloved Bottom

saying, ‘Sleep thou, and I will wind thee in my arms. … the female Ivy so enrings the barky fingers of the Elm. O, how I love thee, how I dote on thee!’ In Greek mythology and pastoral poetry the elm is a symbol of the idyllic life, its shade being a special place of coolness and peace. By contrast, in politics the elm is associated with revolution: after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 William of Orange introduced the Dutch elm hybrid to England, while a century later the felling of the Boston Liberty Tree (elm) of the American Revolution inspired the planting of elms to celebrate revolution not only throughout America but in Vienna (1790), Paris (1790) and Athens (1839).

Grey matters

Submitted by Cambridge Grey Power President Val Massey welcomed a very good attendance of members to the meeting, and reminded members to please let us know of any changes to addresses, as recently mail had been returned ‘address unknown’. A letter was read out from Federation relating to the upcoming elections in September. Cambridge Grey Power will again be hosting a public ‘Meet

the Candidates’ meeting prior to the elections. Date and time will be advertised in the local papers. M Cole and B Dunstan had attended the Community Council Boards meeting and Brian gave a brief account of what happened. We were particularly interested in the fate of the White Cross which used to be mounted on a pole at the end of Hamilton Road where it meets Victoria Street. Our guest speaker this month was John Collyns,

Executive Director, Retirement Villages Association. John gave a very informative presentation, pointing out the many advantages, when thinking of entering a retirement village. He gave members comparisons with living in a village and owning your own home, and answered many questions put to him. Congratulations to this month’s raffle winners: Garry Blayney, Janet Killip, Beverley Hayes, Geoff Dobson and Margaret Lothian.

Christmas for Genealogy group Submitted by Cambridge Genealogy Branch NZSG A cold winter night in July is always a good time for a “Mid-Winter Christmas Pudding” night, a tradition established by the members of Cambridge Genealogy. The recent meeting was a relaxed and informal occasion to enjoy good puddings and the company of fellow researchers. The quiz questions covered a wide range of historical and general knowledge and were enjoyed by all. The local NZ Society Branch

is now preparing for a special celebration in August. This is designated “Family History Month” and is the 50th birthday of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists. The local branch plans to celebrate this anniversary, and its own approximately 30 years with a luncheon to which all past and present members are invited. For more information about this and to register interest please contact the branch convenor, Nancy Cooke, on 8277359 or 0212323159.

Men’s Rebus Club latest speakers By Graham Leeming, Cambridge Men’s Rebus Club Recently a number of members and their guests of the Cambridge Men’s Rebus Club went to the Cambridge Raceway for their Winter Luncheon. The 360-degree view from the top floor of the grandstand is magnificent, all four Waikato mountains were a backdrop to the whole of the area, and we could see everything in the near vicinity. At our last meeting, members were treated to a speaker who earns his living by his voice. Steve Davis, Magic Millions Auctioneer told us of his life, and listening to his voice you could hear the vibrant smooth diction and every now and again he went into his auctioneering patter. At teachers’ college and living near Alexandra Park, he asked

if he could call a couple of low level trial races. A Wrightson’s manager heard him and offered him a holiday job auctioneering livestock. Steve said “yes” and recalled that his first ever sale was an old bearing ewe that sold for $1! From Wrightson’s to Turners Car Auctions, where he later managed all of their auctions, and then later back to Wrightson’s, to auction bloodstock, at Te Rapa, Trentham and Karaka. In 1997 he was asked to call at the Magic Millions horse sale in Australia and he later became the New Zealand representative for Magic Millions sales. He now regularly calls races for TV Trackside, but his direction is now tending towards auctioneering in the fine arts market. One interesting comment was that horse ownership syndicates were a great way to share the

losses. John McGlade was brought up on a dairy farm in Waverley, and using that knowledge stood him in good stead when he started working for Tasman Vaccine Laboratories selling vaccines, dips, drenches, and other animal remedies to farmers. He noted that the first radiation plant was set up at TVL using radioactive rods in a massive concrete bunker to sterilise all types of medical products, used in New Zealand. John later went on to Johnson & Johnson, then Bomac Laboratories, detailing products for the livestock and pet animal health. One of the most bizarre products was a laxative that was exported to Saudi Arabia where it was used on racing camels to make them run faster! John said he had now retired to Cambridge and loved playing golf.

Red Cross Submitted by Cambridge Red Cross Cambridge Red Cross has a new President. Bill James was elected to the role at the Annual Meeting held on Tuesday 11th July in the Red Cross Hall, Milicich Place, Cambridge. Bill replaces Alan Gladwin who did not seek re-election after many years leading this worthwhile organisation. At the conclusion of the meeting Alan was presented with a certificate acknowledging his work done over the past 14 years. Val Massey was re-elected as secretary and Sandra Dawson was re-elected as treasurer. In her report Transport Co-ordinator, Jan, thanked our drivers for their willingness to serve this organisation and their many kindness shown to our clients. Anyone requiring transport

to Hospital and medical appointments please call Jan on 027 6677076. Our medical equipment hire service is kept very busy. If any Cambridge resident is wanting medical equipment for loan, please contact Ngaire on 827 7613. Present at our meeting were Jen Richardson, humanitarian services manager for the Waikato BOP area, and Jason Sebastian, humanitarian services co-ordinator for the Waikato. They congratulated Cambridge on the good work being done in this town, resulting in another successful year. Jason asked if we could let him know of any schools within the Cambridge area who wished to have a ‘People Saver’ program over the next year.

Know Your Property Manager

Why use a property manager?

Property is a favoured investment for many Kiwis, but managing your investment takes time and skill. Landlords must be conversant with law changes to the Residential Tenancies Act, understand the legislation and follow the processes. Then there is the frustration of finding suitable tenants and time-consuming matters of maintenance. Keeping a good tenant is critical for a property investor. Good tenants are more likely to stay on if they receive a high level of service. Professional property managers are experts at looking after investments. Their business is to optimise your returns. They know how to secure better rental rates, see rents are raised in line with the market, and effectively manage and maintain high occupancy levels. Property specialists know how to

?

market your property and vet potential tenants, are up-to-date on legal issues and documentation, take care of the administration and deal with day-today hassles. They will undertake regular property inspections to ensure the value of your asset is maintained. Regular property inspections are a must. Should problems arise over a tenant violating or wanting to terminate a contract, a property manager can quickly step in and manage the situation. Another big advantage of using the services of a property manager is that the tenant/ owner relationship is conducted in a professional manner. Everything is kept on a business footing. At the end of the day, the primary objective is to provide investors with peace of mind.

The experts in property management: ARS Owning a rental property can be quite the challenge at times, whether it be the worry of insurance and legislation requirements, or the hassle of checking on the maintenance of your property and dealing with its tenants, particularly if you don’t live nearby. It can all come with a few stress factors, unless of course you deal with a

trusted and reliable property management company. ARS Accomodation Rental Solutions Ltd has built a track record of success since forming in Cambridge over 2 years ago, and clients are more than happy to recommend the excellent service. “Gaylene has been a fantastic manager, one of the best I have experienced in my years as a landlord,” said one of their clients, John. “Sheree was fantastic,” said another client, Pauline Land. “She understood who I was and set about finding me exactly that. We will definitely use Sheree in the future.” Gaylene O’Sullivan and Sheree Lochead are joined at the Cambridge ARS office by Alan Hoverd, under owner/founder Ian Watson. The team of 5 hold a combined total of over 60 years’ experience in real estate and property management. But what really sets them apart from the field is that they specialize exclusively in property management and go above and beyond in this area of expertise. The team carries out thorough checks on all prospective tenants, finds tenants for vacant properties, ensures your property stays in prime condition, and can handle any matters that may arise. They’ll even inform you of any upcoming repairs or maintenance that may need attention. All the hassles of insurance legislation requirements, inspection reports,

requirements of tenancy law, it’s all covered with complete peace of mind thanks to the friendly, helpful team. And if you’re looking at purchasing a rental property, ARS will provide a rental appraisal free of charge, a service which usually comes with a set fee. As educated experts in all of the ‘ins and outs’ and ‘ups and downs’ of the industry, you can rest assured you’re in safe hands with ARS Property Management. Even when the market has fluctuated in recent months, ARS have been able to maintain almost all their rent roles whilst other companies have seen a drop in clientele through property sales. Ian says it’s simply a reflection of the quality of their hand-picked staff. “A business is only as good as its staff,” he said. “You can also really look after your landlords by looking after the tenants too. “But to put it simply, we offer peace of mind for our landlords.” Whether you’re looking for a place to rent, looking for a tenant or looking for a better solution to managing your property, get in touch with the team today to see how they can help. Phone 07 823 2929 or pop into the ARS office, located inside the walk-through plaza at 60 Victoria Street, Cambridge. Now open Saturday 10am to 3pm. For more information visit www.arspropertymanagement.com.

Excellence and care at Cambridge Property Management Landlords can rest assured their property is in the right hands when working with Cambridge Property Management. Property manager Nicola Pratt truly cares about the quality and wellbeing of each and every client’s property, having been a property owner and landlord herself. “What I focus on really is finding quality tenants, we thoroughly vet people and really take pride in seeing that our tenants are looking after things well,” Nicola said. Cambridge Property Management provides all of the key elements required for excellent property management, including thorough inspections, thorough tenant vetting, and the convenience of very competitive rates and free appraisals. “We highly recommend meth testing at the beginning and end of a tenancy. “We cover all the legal ins and outs for landlords, by taking the worry out of their role. At the moment, to avoid the rush we’re recommending our clients get ceiling and floor insulation completed as that will become law for landlords in July 2019.”

Know Your Property Manager

Finding the right property manager It's important to engage a responsible, trustworthy property manager who will not only collect the rent on your behalf but also handle the day-to-day maintenance of your property, carry out regular inspections and respond to tenants' needs. Finding a good property management company is critical because the right company can make your life as a property owner stress-free. One of the best ways of finding a reputable property manager is by referral. Ask real estate agents for recommendations or friends with investments. Interview potential property managers and make

sure they are familiar with the local market. Familiarity with the area where your property is located means your management company will know what tenants in the area are looking for. This will enable them to market your property effectively. Meeting property managers in person is also a great way of appraising their customer service skills and finding out about their operational and property management procedures. It allows you the opportunity to ask about their qualifications and management experience, and request references from other clients. Don't be afraid to ask.

After all, you're entrusting them to manage one of your biggest assets. A competent management company will have efficient systems in place and good communication skills. Check contracts carefully. Inquire about fees. Find out if there is a minimum term. Keep track of payments and make sure you're

receiving rent payments promptly. Request detailed inspection reports and make sure your property is being thoroughly inspected. And let your property manager know if you have preferred tradespeople. Having a competent property manager can help to attract and keep good tenants.

Looking to rent your property? Call any of the following real estate agencies in this feature today.

BUILDING AND BUYING YOUR NEW HOME

Cambridge architectural designer star of awards By Emelyn McHardy and Sophie Iremonger Lee Turner of Turner Road Architecture walked away from the recent ADNZ Resene Architecture Design Awards with a few things to talk about. The Cambridge local, a newcomer to the Awards, won a commendation for two categories; “Residential New Home between 150 and 300 square metres” and “Residential Alterations and Additions”. He also won the big prize: the Architectural

The judges said Turner’s “Wetlands House” in Cambridge, which earned the big award, was a “bold simplistic home influenced by the architectural style found in Central Otago and reinterpreted for the Waikato.” The client’s brief required the design of an easy living home for a family of four. Turner’s home features three pavilions and has a strong emphasis on entertaining and pursuits. As well as distinguishing between sleeping, living and guest areas; judges remarked that each pavilion gave the building design strength and continuity. “This design brings a utilitarian farmhouse sensibility to a large house.” “External materials are rustic, yet smoothly detailed, and the plan is orientated carefully Cambridge architect Lee Turner's Wetland House was inspired by to maximise sun, views and shelter.” Central Otago. Design Award for Residential New Home over 300sqm. Turner said he and his team did not expect to do so well during their first time entering. “Obviously, we were keen to do well but with so many good designers around the region we didn’t dare expect to do so well,” Turner said. “I’m so proud of my team who all have a major input into what we do at Turner Road, which I put down to the collaborative approach we adopt.”

Turner Road Architecture’s commendations in two other award categories also recognised local homes. Their commendation for the Residential Alterations and Additions Architectural Design Award, recognised their stunning work for “Walker House”, a fully restored and renovated Villa at 68 Queen Street. And their commendation for the Residential New Home between 150m2 – 300m2

Architectural Design Award, was for their family home at St Kilda, Cambridge. Lee Turner is the director of Turner Road Architecture, which was first established in 2006. He and his wife also own Elevate Architectural Transportables, another exciting new venture established 3 years ago. FRIDAY JULY 21, 2017

Apartments on the rise The average asking price of all residential dwellings in New Zealand dropped during the month of June, down to $917,250 – 4.7 per cent lower than the previous month. It was even better news for those looking to buy in Auckland, as the number of apartments listed for sale almost doubled– with 800 listings for the month of June compared to 453 in May, giving buyers a more cost effective option when approaching the property ladder. Statistics from realestate. SHOW HOME 2 Helen June Ave, The Meadows, Flagstaff, Hamilton. OPEN Tue to Sun 12pm - 4pm or by appointment.

We know what a great time this can be, and would love to help you through the adventure! Read what some of our clients have to say below and get in touch and arrange a free, no pressure meeting with one of our team – we’d love to hear your ideas! “Well it has been six months since we moved into our wonderful new home. Thank you both for making it such a great process.” - Duncan and Maria Dysart

co.nz showed that the average asking price for an apartment in Auckland in June stood at $679,170. “We’ve been collecting property data for more than 10 years and never before have we seen so many apartments come onto the market in one month,” said realestate. co.nz spokesperson Vanessa Taylor. “With apartments typically being more affordable than houses, this has pulled down Auckland’s total average asking price for the month.” “Kiwis have traditionally been brought up in a home and garden environment, but housing has evolved over the decades, particularly in Auckland with apartments, subdivisions, cross leases and terraced housing very much a part of the landscape,” she said. “Ten years ago, apartments were largely confined to the Central Business District, but they are now an integrated part of developments in areas across the wider Auckland, North Shore, Waitakere and Manukau cities. “It has shifted the mindset that buying an apartment meant buying into the Auckland CBD lifestyle, which may have only appealed to a certain demographic. “Now, apartments are meeting a wider set of lifestyle stages and needs. There is significant choice, and buyers can take into consideration developments which meet their needs, for example schools, parks, shopping and local facilities. It provides buyers with a more cost-effective way to approach the property market.” Nationally, one and two bedroom apartments made up the lion’s share of the apartment listings that came onto the market in June. Compared to June 2016, the number of one bedroom apartments increased by 45.8 per cent and two bedrooms by 28.2 per cent. However, the number of apartments for sale with three or more bedrooms decreased compared to the same time last year. Year on year, the number of apartments for sale in Auckland rose 52.8 per cent (one bedroom) 45.5

Vanessa Taylor per cent (two bedrooms) and 18.3 per cent (three bedrooms or more). “The Auckland apartment market is catering to a wider variety of buyers, with one bedroom apartments best suited to students, two and three or more bedrooms appealing to families” Vanessa explained. New property listings fall in four of the main centres While the Auckland market had an overall lift in new listings in June (2.2 per cent) compared to the same time last year, this was underpinned by the 800 new apartments coming onto the market. The other main centres did not fare so well. The biggest drop in new listings in June 2017 was in the Wellington region, down to 544 (-13.4 per cent). This was followed by Canterbury with 1,055 new listings (-13.0 per cent), Waikato with 639 (-12.7 per cent) and Bay of Plenty at 584 (-10.7 per cent). Wellington’s inventory of listings lowest of main centres Wellington Mayor Justin Lester was quoted in the media recently saying that the capital’s population was likely to increase by up to 80,000 in the next 25 to 30 years and not enough housing was being built to meet that need. The Mayor said that Wellington needed to be building more new homes – at least 1,000 per year. Vanessa Taylor said, “While June is traditionally a quiet month, Wellington’s inventory of listings in June stood at six weeks, the lowest of all New Zealand’s regions.” “Inventory of listings means that theoretically if no new properties were to come onto the market from today, Wellington’s property stock would ‘sell out’ in six weeks,” she said. “While it is currently a sellers’ market across all New Zealand regions, in Wellington it’s even more obvious,” said Vanessa.

Trampers take on Taumarunui

A day to remember Not your ordinary Tuesday for most people, but for Andre Balzer, David Mc Cracken (also known as Crackers) from Mitre 10 Mega and Marcus Grayling from Grayling Builders, this was a day to remember. On Tuesday 11th July, it was an early start at just 2am, the three headed off to Waihau Bay, located 147km east of Whakatane. Arriving at 7am, out they set out on Cracker’s rig “Crack a Faddy”, it was the beginning of an incredible fishing adventure. Heading 30km out to sea, the three had approximately 1000m of water beneath them. After only a short 45-minute wait, there was a surprising triple hook up. Eventually, two lines were lost, but one remained strong and determined. As two hours went on, after winding and reeling on a 24kg tackle, Andre finally brought up the mega large Southern Blue-fin tuna with the help of Crackers and Marcus. Unusual to see this species of fish in winter, the blokes were not only shocked, but stoked! Heaving it up into Cracker’s boat, back they came into shore, ready and waiting to see how heavy this beauty is. At the weigh station at Waihau Bay, the massive blue-fin weighed in at a whopping 91.7kg. From here, there is only one thing left to do… eat it! The team at Cambridge Home Kills were more than honoured to fillet this great catch, and now definitely have their work cut out for them. Congratulations to Andre, Crackers and Marcus on your great catch, and thanks to Mitre 10 Mega Cambridge for sponsoring the men to get this awesome catch.

Submitted by the Cambridge Tramping Club Cambridge trampers went exploring recently to Taumarunui. Clad in warm clothes we departed early on a bleak morning for the King Country. Pausing at Te Kuiti inspect the new Colin Meades statue and take selfies we continued on to our morning tea stop where Sue and her mother reminisced with us about life on soldiers ballot farm and a ramble around a garden in winter mode. After following a stream we viewed a lovely hidden waterfall with a cave behind it. As we approached Taumarunui, Mt Hikurangi began to dominate the skyline where a quick detour to a park gave us a birds eye view of the town. Settled into our accommodation we left for another bush walk and explored some small communities. Owhango, once a thriving mill and farming settlement, is now popular with trampers and skiers. Dinner was enjoyed as we watched the rugby. By the next morning the Whanganui and Ongarue rivers had swollen with the heavy overnight

rain. We drove down the aptly named Forgotten Highway, its steep stark ridge lines etched against the blue sky. Situated in the Whanganui National Park, the bush in the Maire loop track is very different. Reaching up in their quest for light in the deep pumice gullies grew the oldest and tallest rimu, totara, kahikatea and matipo we had ever seen amidst beautiful lush mamaku ponga. Lunch over after more exploring and too early to see glow worms we headed homewards via Tokaanu where a welcome swim in the hot pools soothed our bodies before continuing along the Western by pass to Cambridge, thus completing an interesting trip for us through a little known area. Many thanks to our guide for her informative commentary.

Waikato expressway on track It may be the depths of winter but work continues on Waikato’s biggest ever infrastructure project, the Waikato expressway. The wet summer and autumn did not help with earthworks targets on both the Hamilton and Huntly sections and they will be looking to make up some lost ground next season – October to April. But the structures teams have been busy with bridge-building programmes over winter. Hamilton has 16 bridges along its 22km length with work under way on nine of them. The 15.2km Huntly section has nine bridges, with work well advanced on six and another about to start. “We can’t do a lot of earthworks over winter but the wet weather doesn’t stop the structures

crews on both these sites,” says NZ Transport Agency spokesperson Peter Simcock. The final section to start construction, Longswamp, is now well under way, while the finishing touches go on Rangiriri ahead of a significant historical and cultural opening event in November. The entire project and each section has a sizeable community of followers. To join them and keep in touch “like” the Waikato expressway Facebook page (10,000 others already have) and also visit http://www.nzta.govt.nz/projects/ waikato-expressway/ to get more information about the overall project and sign up to section Project Updates. bridges until the big gear rolls out again in spring. A milestone is looming with the Gordonton Road overbridge likely to open to traffic in early October, about the same time as the SH26Morrinsville Road bridge opens. Most of the Hamilton local road bridges go over the expressway which gets dug out below. There are four exceptions where the expressway goes up and over – the railway/ Ryburn Road bridge, and at Powells Road, Pardoa Boulevard (Greenhill interchange) and Puketaha Road bridges. The 22km project requires about 3.6 million cubic metres of earth to be moved, and the team moved 1 million in their first season. They are now getting established this month for work around Puketaha Road so watch for changes there. What’s happening currently, north to south: Piling is complete at Osborne Road bridge and continues down the road at Kay Road bridge. Gordonton Road bridge leads the way with preparation for the concrete deck pour ahead of opening to traffic in early Ocober. The beams for the East Coast Main Trunk Rail bridge arrived recently, so Ruakura Road was closed last week over three days (on 15, 16 and 17 July) whilst some of the 24 beams were lifted into place. The team had to work between train movements using two cranes to lift 12 50-tonne beams into place. The rest of the beams on the northern side of the rail line are now installed without disturbing traffic. Once the bridge is complete workers can begin to haul material over the rail line. The beams are in place at Morrinsville Road bridge ahead of the concrete deck pour.

The Mangaonua Stream diversion works are now complete and crane pads for bridge construction are being prepared. The Matangi Road bridge beams are in place ahead of the deck pour. Tree felling is finished in the Mangaone and Mangaharakeke gullies, making way for bridge construction. There is lots happening down at the Southern interchange where the East West Link bridge building continues, along with piling for the big retaining wall. Don’t forget the Visitor Centre at the site office on Percival Road is open 10am-3pm weekdays; 9am-12 noon first Saturday of the month. Construction is due for completion in 2020.

Store Manager / Boutique Fashion FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY to work with the fun, vibrant, inspiring team at Bettie Monroe. If you have enthusiasm, management skills and a passion for fashion, please call 07 574 9105 to apply. See TradeMe Listing #1365971158 for more details

By Denise Landow Cambridge’s Martin Bennett, has been building custom cars and hot rods for five decades. Now at 64 years, he still puts himself under immense pressure to get projects just right. The company director by day is also a member of Stragglers Rod & Custom Club. Martin is a third-time entrant to the prestigious Teng Tools Grand National Rod & Custom Show - a celebration of this country’s 50 best hot rods and custom cars, and run as part of Australasia’s biggest motorsport gathering, CRC Speedshow. Bennett’s 1955 Ford Ranchwagon with a 350 Chevrolet engine, has only been recently finished. What makes this car special is the fact that his wife, Marion, never liked the car. “When I first built it ten years ago, it was never finished properly. There were no carpets, sound deadening or window rubbers - it was hot and loud. She rode in it once. But now since this rebuild, she’s claimed it as hers,” he laughs. For Martin, the Ranchwagon rebuild is just the latest of many projects undertaken, and the third time he’s taken cars to the show. The Ranchwagon is probably not the only one of its kind, but it’s still quite rare, he says. 1950s Fords were, and still are, favourites for many car enthusiasts. With no family history of hot rodding, Martin can’t claim to have inherited the interest. He’s been involved with custom cars all his life, and started his first build at 14 years old. He says it started when he witnessed a purple 1934 Ford coupe ‘lay rubber’ down Upper Hutt’s main street. Martin believes his hot rodding hobby is more of a sickness. “My wife says my obsession is curable but only at death. For me, it combines a passion of building cars with the connection with other people who share the same interest. “My dad always looked after his cars but never modified them. In his retired years he joined a local Holden Club with his 1972 Premier, and that car is now in my garage. He always thought I was crazy spending so much money on cars.” What interests Martin the most about building hot rods is the enjoyment of the process. When envisioning a project, in his mind’s eye, he clearly sees the look and result he wants. “It’s frustrating at times and often put yourself under pressure to complete something on time but it’s worth it,” he says. One of his proudest moments so far was winning Top Car at Beach Hop in Whangamata this year. The 11th annual CRC Speedshow takes place at Auckland’s ASB Showgrounds over this weekend, 22 – 23 July 2017.

Wow… Wow... Wow. The coolest movie in cool movies history. It's 100% pure class of entertainment. An awe-inspiring piece of filmmaking from Edgar (Ant Man) Wright that plays out as a musical through the lens of an action thriller. Sweet, funny and utterly original — you won’t see another film like it this year. Everything about the film is pretty much pitch perfect. Lets’ start with the cars. The chase scenes in this film run circles around the Fast & Furious films if a certain reality of the moves matters to you. This is more in line with Bullit, French Connection and the Italian Job films as far as great chases go. The music, fun, simply fun. Songs from every decade of your lifetime best pure adrenaline action in years. You will be truly on the edge of your seat during much of the film. And oh, what a cast. Best film so far, this year.
