FRIDAY NOVEMBER 16, 2018

Cambridge newsroom update The weather turned it on over the weekend for Armistice commemorations, with record crowds flocking out to Karapiro for Armistice in Cambridge. As a first-timer myself, I was particularly interested that five out of the six people I spoke to for Streetview were also newbies to the event. What struck me was the great atmosphere and the massive amount of work that must have gone in to the event. There were people of all ages out there, and the other interesting thing about the Streetview was that everyone I spoke to had travelled from out of Cambridge. It’s another example of what a drawcard Lake Karapiro and the facilities are for Cambridge, allowing Armistice in Cambridge to expand far beyond the capacity it had when it used to be in town. Also this week I spoke with local woman Nikita Geurts, who was travelling along Shakespeare St minding her own business when someone shot through the intersection with Moore St, totalled her car and sped off without even checking if she was OK.

Editor, In the 1950’s Ford Motor company were forced to remove dangerous hood ornaments from their cars that could cause physical harm in a collision. Since then ‘leaping cats’, ‘eagles’ etc. have been banned. Walking between two parked SUVs at dusk one evening I just missed walking into a bicycle carrier sticking out like a Triceratops, painted black, with no high viz tape. Since then I have noticed quite a number of such accessories. They also obscure licence plates and driver’s rear vision even when not carrying bikes and protrude to almost a metre in an angle park. Just try getting out of a parking space where one has parked behind and across your rear end. Brian Dunstan

Outrageous, and I hope whoever was driving the car is tracked down. It’s quite a scary thing to think that you can be driving along and something like that can happen, even here in Cambridge. So hopefully there’s a good outcome for Nikita, otherwise she will have to cough up $1200 on her insurance excess (she’s 19) which just doesn’t seem fair. I was also lucky enough to head along to an inspirational evening at Onyx last week, getting to hear about the newly established Waikato Women’s Fund, among other things. The chair of that, Michelle Howie, was talking about being a person who bothers – which is a very good thing. I think we could all maybe do with bothering more about what’s happening in our town, in the right way of course, and looking out for each other is all part of that. What do you reckon? Claire Robson, editor

Cat’s stash returned to owner We can now report that the owner of most of the socks and underwear stolen by a mischievous cat in Leamington has been reunited with their items. Last week’s issue featured a story on a young tabby named Archie, who had driven his owners mad bringing home several pairs of socks and underwear in the middle of the night – which they hadn’t the faintest idea of where they’d come from. After knocking on several doors in the neighbourhood to no avail, the Keightley

family appealed to Cambridge News readers in the hope of finding the rightful sock owner, and it worked. We were contacted by the wife of “The Man with Cold Feet”, as Archie’s owner Lynley described him, and put her in touch with the Keightleys, and sure enough about 90 percent of Archie’s midnight laundry haul belonged to her husband. “We had a lovely chat and she was very understanding about the whole thing,” a relieved Lynley said. “We are all living happily ever after.”

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 16, 2018

A weekend of Armistice

Karapiro was abuzz with battle re-enactments, military vehicles and entertainment, including Lyrica, the trio playing music from days gone by.

By Claire Robson A civic Armistice ceremony at the cenotaph and the annual Armistice in Cambridge event at Lake Karapiro on the weekend gave locals and those from further afield plenty of chance to commemorate the signing of the Armistice that ended World War One. Held over two days out at

Lake Karapiro, Armistice in Cambridge was the biggest event on record, with almost 4,000 people passing through the gates over Saturday and Sunday. One of the organisers, Paul Watkins, said that the number was split pretty much evenly across the two days, despite the fact that Sunday felt busier. “Maybe they all came at once on Sunday,” he wondered.

It was a sombre mood in the Town Plaza on Sunday, as the civic ceremony to commemorate Armistice was held. Photo by Michael Jeans.

Paul estimated that “a couple of thousand” people took part in the “Roaring Chorus” – a cacophony of sound to replicate the joyous outburst 100 years ago when the war officially ended on the 11th hour or the 11th day of the 11th month. And this year

Forty-eight medals for the pipe band were produced for the centenary, with four sent over the Le Quesnoy and the remaining 44 distributed to the pipers. Photos by Michael Jeans.

there were a record number of military vehicles at Armistice in Cambridge, with 126 in total turning up. “Some arrived on the Saturday morning and we had no idea they were coming,” Paul laughed. “Everyone had a great time,” Paul said, adding that even people who had been going to the event for years said the atmosphere was better this year, something he thought might have been down to the meticulous planning that went in to make it a success. “It’s a massive amount of work that falls on a small handful of people.” The surplus from this year’s biggest ever event would be used as a buffer for future years, Paul said, explaining that most of Armistice in Cambridge’s bills are incurred regardless of whether the event goes ahead. “If it rains, we would have some serious issues.” With things well in hand out at Karapiro, the annual civic ceremony took place on Sunday morning in town. Following a parade, a crowd gathered at

the Town Cenotaph in front of the Town Hall for the laying of wreaths and the giving of speeches, remembering those who fell in a war that was one of the deadliest in history, responsible for the deaths of an estimated 37 million people worldwide. Pipers started the historic day at 6am, playing “When the Battle is Over” in honour of the century that has passed since the Armistice that ended the war. After a performance at the clock tower, the pipers led a parade of military veterans, navy reservists and army vehicles through town, arriving at the cenotaph for commencement of the official service. Following that service, which included the laying of wreaths at the cenotaph in memory of the fallen soldiers and the customary two-minute silence at 11am, the band headed out to Karapiro where they played at noon. Hit and run totals car By Claire Robson

A young Cambridge woman has been left shaken after a hit and run last week, when a vehicle ploughed into the side of her car as she was making her way along Shakespeare St towards Lamb St. The speeding vehicle, which wreckage from the scene suggests could have been an Isuzu, shot through the intersection of Moore and Shakespeare Sts at around 9.45pm last Wednesday, slamming into Nikita Geurts’

Nissan Tiida so hard she was spun around and ended up in Moore St. It all happened so quickly, Nikita said, that she didn’t get a good look at the car, which had no headlights on and failed to give way, ploughing into the front driver’s side of her car and demolishing it. “By the time I got out of the car, they were gone,” Nikita said, believing the other vehicle had continued along Moore St, towards the dead end. “It gave me such a fright,” a shaken Nikita said, adding that she thought the other vehicle was

a dark-coloured vehicle similar to a jeep. Lucky to escape with minor bumps and bruises, Nikita’s car was a total write off. To add insult to injury, because the culprit didn’t stop the 19-year-old is faced with a $1200 excess on her car insurance to replace her vehicle. Nikita’s mum, Leeanne Geurts, was gutted that the offenders drove off without even checking that Nikita was OK. Luckily, passers-by stopped to render assistance to the shaken teenager, and Leeanne was particularly keen to thank Diane Millar, Sarah and Matt Kavanagh, the ambulance staff and the police officers who helped Nikita at the time of the accident. Leeanne said she hopes the driver of the vehicle will do the right thing and come forward. “They need to face their responsibilities otherwise they have learnt nothing, and we don’t want this happening again to someone else.” Failing that, the junior hairdresser will have to stump up the $1200 insurance excess, through no fault of her own and right before Christmas. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Cambridge police on 07 827 5531 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to make an Nikita Geurts was driving along Shakespeare St when a vehicle, believed to be an Isuzu, ran the give way sign on Moore St, ploughing into her car before driving off. anonymous report.

YES to business success By Sophie Iremonger

Two innovative business products which featured in the November 2 issue of Cambridge News have earned recognition at the recent Young Enterprise Scheme Regional Awards.

Bianca Rayner, a member of St Peter’s business team Get Heated, which made their own wearable blanket, was awarded the Leadership Award and CEO of the Year at the event on November 1. Meanwhile, the other St Peter’s team to make the regional final, Hurban Oasis,

received the Innovation Award for their hydroponic grow kits. This team included Will Stephens, Alex Thomas, Bodie Mechell, Torbin Stevenson, Isabella Du Plessis and Tom Montgomery. The Get Heated team of Bianca Rayner, Sophie Brittenden, Juliet Fordyce, Maddy Wilson and Berber De Boer made the top six for the competition and were invited to pitch their business to a panel of judges on the night. Bianca said she wished to give a special thanks to their business studies teacher, Chris Mcleod, who “has always been supportive” throughout the project, which began in March.

CAMBRIDGE NEWS | 7

“I was extremely passionate about our business (Get Heated) and loved the people I worked with,” she said. “For others to recognise the passion that I had, made me feel privileged.” Isabella Du Plessis said the Hurban Oasis team was “very excited” about winning their award. “We always knew that our product and design was different to anyone else’s or any other product on the market at all,” she said. The students were amongst 200 high schoolers from around the Waikato and King Country taking part in this year’s competition. The overall award, Company of the Year, went to Patrick Roskam of Matamata College.

Blast from the past

Motorists were sharing the forecourt with some unusual vehicles on Sunday, as a collection military vehicles popped in to refuel at Challenge on Duke St. The assortment of machines were making their way from Armistice in Cambridge at Lake Karapiro to Sunday’s parade and civic ceremony at the cenotaph, when they stopped in for a topup of fuel courtesy of the local petrol station.

St Peter’s business teams Get Heated and Hurban Oasis were all smiles after receiving their awards at the Waikato King Country Young Enterprise Scheme Awards.

Night for women who bother By Claire Robson

Cambridge women enjoyed a fun night out last week, hearing inspirational stories of other women and contributing to the Waikato Women’s fund in the process. The Inspirational Women’s Evening was hosted by radio personality Camille Guzzwell and featured four women and their stories. First up was local businesswoman Franny McInnes, with the talk she delivered at the TEDx Ruakura recently about how she started her successful online business, Breastmates, as a way to work from home as a new mum. From sewing reusable breast pads on her sewing machine and selling them on TradeMe, Franny now designs and sells her own maternity clothing line and

other ‘must-haves’ for pregnant women and new mums online. Franny was followed by fellow TEDx Ruakura speaker Michelle Howie, the chair of the establishment group of the Waikato Women’s Fund. Like Franny, Michelle delivered her TEDx talk, which was centred around women who bother – those women who go out of their way to make a difference in the world. Michelle is one of those women, helping to establish the Waikato Women’s Fund – a new collective that centres around investing in the wellbeing of women and girls in the region. The fund is a new model that reflects the different way women give across their lifetimes. “The Waikato Women’s Fund is not like other funds, where membership is only permitted with donations of a certain

size, because ours is a collective, not a club,” Michelle explained. A donation of any size will gain entry to the collective, “even giving five dollars gets you in as a member”. All money raised will help to grow the fund in the Waikato region, with members having a say in how the money is distributed to local organisations and groups working to improve outcomes here for women and girls. Then, for a bit of light relief, a couple of volunteers from the audience strapped on fake pregnant bellies and modelled some of Franny’s summer line, which the former engineer designs and has made at hand-picked, ethically sound factories in China. Next up were rowers Lucy Spoors

and Ella Greenslade, Cambridge-based rowers who are both members of the New Zealand women’s rowing eight and have recently returned from the World Championships in Bulgaria. Lucy and Ella spoke about the challenges of competing at the highest level of sport, resilience, and the importance of making sure your “green light” was on before looking around at others who may not be performing up to par. With all money raised going towards the Waikato Women’s Fund, the night proved to be entertaining, inspirational and interesting. Visit www.wwf.momentumwaikato. nz to find out more about the Waikato Women’s Fund.

New backer for fun run By Viv Posselt The annual Waipā Fun Run organised by St Peter’s Catholic School has a new naming sponsor – Lugtons Real Estate. The new partnership was described recently by Lugtons’ Cambridge manager Peter Hulsdouw as a “particularly good fit” with the company. “Lugtons is interested in promoting community health. We are also naming rights sponsors for the Lugton’s Round the Bridges event in Hamilton. This new association with St Peter’s Catholic School is our second with an event of this nature; it’s a great community event and we are happy to get behind it.” St Peters’ Catholic School principal Grant Stuart welcomed the move, adding that as a “good family business” Lugtons shared similar values to those held by the school. “This is a good partnership for us,” he said. The commitment is initially for three years, with an option to review after that. The Waipā Fun Run

began in 2012 and has grown to become one of the school’s major fundraisers. It was known by that name until REMAX came on board as naming sponsor several years ago. It takes place each autumn in Cambridge’s Victoria Square, and offers a range of events suited to all ages and abilities, from a 2km School Challenge up to a 10km run and walk. Hundreds of sponsors support in numerous

ways, and local businesses and volunteers step up to help out, either in handson terms or by offering an impressive range of spot prizes. St Peter’s event organisers Lisa Hodgson and Donna Warwick said the numbers of participants had been growing steadily through the years, with some now coming from outside Cambridge. The next fun run is set to take place on Sunday, March 10, 2019.

MPs visit early Blackadder good night out childhood centres Blackadder Goes Forth is now playing at the Gaslight Theatre, Claire Robson went along to check it out. A massive Blackadder fan, I was excited to go and check out this show and I was not disappointed. It was always going to be tricky to replicate the comedy genius of Rowan Atkinson, Tony Robinson, Hugh Laurie and co, but I thought the cast of Blackadder Goes Forth did a reasonable job of it. The standout for me was Jared Wooldridge as George, who I thought absolutely nailed the character. Nicholas Wells in the title role managed to channel Edmund

Blackadder very well, capturing the original’s mannerisms and vocal character, and Mike Scanlon as the hapless Baldrick also did an excellent job. The show was based on three episodes of the BBC series – Corporal Punishment, Private Plane and Goodbyee – and it was fitting that it started in time for Armistice. The poignant end of the series was captured superbly by the stage show, which was set at the Western Front (the Somme) in 1917, when the comedy subsided at the end and the chilling reality of the loss of life was driven home. Blackadder fans should head along to the Gaslight and check this out, it’s on until December 8.

National MPs Louise Upston and Nicola Willis wooing future voters during their visit to Bunnies Childcare and Pre-School last week.

By Sophie Iremonger Two National MPs made visits around Cambridge on Friday last week. Our local MP for the Cambridge/Taupo electorate Hon. Louise Upston hosted Nicola Willis from Wellington, National’s spokesperson for Early Childhood Education, for a public Friendly Forum at the Cambridge Health and Community Centre followed by a visit to a few early childhood centres around town; Te Kohanga Reo o Kemureti, Bunnies Childcare and Pre-School and Grow Early Education. Having entered Parliament this year, Nicola noted the importance of meeting people involved in the industry on the ground floor and seeing the diversity of the many different early childhood

education centres. “That’s the only way to really learn, to come and talk to the people doing it face to face, see what they’re working with,” she said during their visit to Bunnies. “The level of care that they have for (young children) really blows me away, I just love seeing that, it’s a very positive part of our community. “Plus, I like cuddling babies, I’ll be honest!” she laughed, as a mother of four herself. “It’s a good opportunity to connect and see what’s happening,” added Louise, whose three children attended Bunnies as youngsters. “I’m trying to listen to as many early childhood educators and parents as I can and see the different ways that it’s done in different communities,” said Nicola. “It’s a wonderful sector.”

New manager for Community House By Viv Posselt

Harriet Dixon’s role as the newlyinstalled manager at Cambridge Community House (CCH) takes on particular importance as the organisation braces to meet fast-growing demand. Just days into the job, Harriet said last week that referrals to CCH counselling services have more than doubled over the last four years and there is little sign of it slowing. “We are looking at another record high again this year, having already achieved more than last year. The need for our services continues to grow in Cambridge.” She attributed the increased demand to a combination of population growth and the rising number of people seeking help sooner. “That could be because there is more awareness around problems like mental wellness; people may feel less afraid to ask for help and might be seeking it earlier than in the past.” Harriet has come on board just as CCH is advancing moves to combat its current space squeeze. It is busy with the tender process for the development of a new building on an additional 8m of land leased to them by the Waipa District Council at the rear of the existing site. “We desperately need to increase our capacity,” she said. “We’re outgrowing our space; ideally, we’d like to have the new building up and running by December 2019. Part of my role in that is to handle the fundraising; we have a target of $500,000 … it’s important that we reach out in as many ways as possible to bring that money in. I can be

the face of that.” British-born Harriet comes to the job armed with an administrative skillset she developed over more than 20 years working with the market research company, Colmar Brunton; it was a company transfer to New Zealand that brought she and her husband John to New Zealand. After shifting around the country, mainly following John’s work in change management, they moved to Cambridge about a year ago, complete with sons Sam and Tom. The move to this region was driven by Harriet’s desire to change her career from a research orientation to focus on the wellbeing of others, which she did by taking up positions at the Waikato DHB and Pinnacle MHN. When she saw the CCH manager’s position advertised, she jumped at the chance to realise her life-long ambition to run a not-for-profit organisation that helps its community. “I love helping people, giving something back … to be able to do that through my work is a wonderful opportunity.” Key to her role, she said, is the ability to ensure systems at the coal face are working well. “We have a team of amazing counsellors, and this seems to be a real hub in this community, one where everyone is welcomed, and no judgement is passed. But it is important to make sure the work we do is measurable, and that the outcomes are New Cambridge Community House manager Harriet Dixon, seen here with the new fundraising billboard measurable. To do that, processes need outside her office, finds it ironic that she has come all the way from the UK town of Leamington Spa to work in to be in place and running smoothly.” Leamington, New Zealand.

Quickfire News Sending Love calling on Cambridge MP goes into bat for expressway

Taupō MP Louise Upston appeared before the Select Committee considering the extension of the Waikato Expressway last week, presenting a petition with 3,953 signatures in support of the proposed work that is currently under reconsideration by the Government. Pointing out the inherent dangers in the current Cambridge to Piarere turnoff, Louise urged the committee to proceed with the proposed new section between Cambridge and Piarere. A resident of the area, Louise pointed out to the select committee that the stretch of road that narrows from the current expressway is not fit for purpose. Louise highlighted the Karapiro Rd and SH1 intersection which she said forces people to risk their lives every day to cross it. “This is a road that kills,” she said, telling the committee that nine people have died along there since 2005, with serious injuries being a regular occurrence. Karapiro Rd is also a common route to Hobbiton, which has seen visitor numbers leap from 33,000 in 2010 to 552,000, and an increase in tourist drivers who are unfamiliar with our roads is adding to the danger. Increased traffic to Lake Karapiro is also a problem, and Louise told the committee that the turnoff to Tauranga at Piarere is considered by the Waikato police to be the most dangerous intersection in the entire region.

Teachers on strike again

Classrooms in Cambridge fell silent again on Tuesday, as primary teachers and principals took another day of strike action as part of a rolling week of nationwide strikes. Cambridge primary schools and the middle school all closed their doors, after mediation failed and an offer by the government was rejected on Monday. The strike in Cambridge was more low-key than the earlier LOGO - LANDSCAPE (LOCATION) stop-work in August, when teachers took to the streets with placards. Unions representing primary and secondary teachers are meeting this week to discuss the possibility of an unprecedented joint strike.

An initiative which spreads Christmas cheer to those points around the country, or those who can’t find one who might be lonely during the festive time of year is can send it direct to PO Box 90-701, Victoria Street West, calling on the Cambridge community to get involved in Auckland 1142. their cause. Right now, the Sending Love team is putting out Sending Love, launched 12 months ago by Hannah the call for volunteers and local organisations to setRodgers and her son Jayden, collects Christmas cards up drop boxes here in Cambridge, and for Cambridge written by everyday Kiwis and distributes them to schools, groups and everyday people to make their own thousands of people around the country by way of cards for the cause. Last Christmas more than 32,000 messages of love made it into rest homes around the country. This year the grassroots cause is hoping to touch 250,000 people between now and December 25, because there’s no reason for anybody in New Zealand to feel forgotten this Christmas. “We live in a country full of people who have love to share and there’s no reason for anyone to go without a bit of it this Christmas,” Hannah said. “Last year we had families having card-making and writing nights, along with community centres, classrooms and entire schools getting involved.” It’s very simple for people to participate in Sending Love, simply write a message in a card – making sure it’s full of love – and drop it into one of the many drop off People of any age can get involved in the Sending Love project, making Christmas cards for Kiwis.

MORTGAGE MATTERS

Why use a Mortgage Broker?

Annual exhibition next week

By Gavin Lynch – Yes Mortgages In the present loan market, most lenders are changing their criteria in regards to what, how much and to whom they lend. This makes it even more important to use a mortgage broker so you know you are getting the right mortgage and right lender to suit your needs. I believe every client has a unique borrowing scenario and time needs to be taken with the client to understand and analyse this, so a correct lending plan and structure can be put in place to achieve goals. In this column, I want to explain briefly the role of the mortgage broker and what I can offer. The key role of the mortgage broker is to make the whole loan process easier for you, the client. This is possible because: I can look at all the lending options. I deal with more than 25 different lenders and work to find the best lender to suit your unique situation. • I can do all the ‘leg work’ with the lenders. • This saves you time and avoids pitfalls in getting a loan approved. • I can negotiate rates, fees, and legal contributions with certain lenders to obtain the best deal for the client. • I can meet at a convenient time and place for the client. • This can be in the home or workplace and after hours if need be. • I can advise on the best loan structure to suit the client’s need. And best of all using a broker is a free service in most cases. Now that has to be worth thinking about! If your looking for a mortgage, please give me a call and I can help you though the whole process.

The upcoming annual exhibition of the Cambridge Society of Arts is being held on November 17 and 18 at St Andrew’s Church Hall, showcasing artworks of various mediums that members have created. All art works are for sale and the exhibition will give the people of Cambridge and surrounding area a chance to purchase some outstanding pieces of art. The Cambridge Society of Arts members meet on different days at their painting room on Thornton Rd and new members are welcome. On top of that, several times during the year workshops are held where members can learn new skills and styles from different artists. This year, for the first time, the Cambridge Camera Club will be part of the exhibition and will showcase some of the great photographs that members have taken, with prints on canvas and fine art paper available to purchase. Visionaries’ outings By Ann Robson, Visionaries Cambridge Inc. member (Abridged)

Last week Visionaries Cambridge had another outing, heading to the Hamilton Gardens where we boarded our boat for a cruise on the Waikato River. The views were lovely, and the boat ride was quiet and peaceful. First we sailed through the Hamilton Gardens and there were many photo opportunities as we got great views of the various gardens from a totally different angle. Sailing on we saw the magnificent carved lintels of the Waikato museum and the Māori warrior on top of the building. The casino has a wonderful mural of a native falcon on its wall and you get a good view of it from the river. As we

sailed along it was so quiet it was hard to believe we were in the middle of Hamilton. After the cruise we had a picnic in the gardens, followed by a walk around the gardens – the rhododendron garden was magnificent. Later this month, we have a Berries and Bubbly outing at a member’s home, our Christmas dinner is organised, and the literary group has a meeting November 16. Also there is a proposed trip for next year to Gisborne and the East Cape, and our Pre-Festive Breakaway to Auckland is coming up. If you are under or over 60 and you want to join our group and maybe join us on our outings ring Linda on 0220696891 or Barry on 0272538355. We are always pleased to make new friends.

advantage of the well located Stage 3 houses near our planned facilities. The completed Village will comprise 205 homes designed for independent living, a luxurious Village Centre forming the social hub of the Village, and sought-after facilities for motorhome owners at ‘The Stables’ – parking, washdown/dumpstation areas, storage and recreation sheds. There is additional convenience next door with a commercial development that incorporates a proposed cafe/ bistro and 7-day superette.

The Freedom Difference While Freedom Lifestyle Villages are registered under the Retirement Villages Act (2003), providing full legal and financial protections, there are major points of difference in our model. Residents live independently in a safe, secure over-50s community of like minded people. No daily in-home support or medical care is provided - but all lawns, grounds and communal facilities are looked after by Freedom. Most significantly, Freedom provides for potential capital gain if it comes time to sell - based on the prevailing market value and not your original purchase price. This is unlike other retirement villages where your loss of ingoing equity can be substantial from the day you move in. Cambridge Oaks can be a very affordable option for you, but we do not compromise on house design, functionality or quality. Show homes are open for inspection every day, weekdays and weekends. Our lifestyle consultants can guide you through options and answer your questions about over 50s lifestyle living and the benefits of the Freedom model.

Taupō MP selects Youth MP

Katie Donald (pictured below) of Taupō Nui-a-Tia College has been selected as the Taupo Electorate’s next Youth MP and representative at next year’s Youth Parliament in July 2019. “I am extremely pleased to announce Katie as my Youth MP for 2019 after she really impressed with her clear passion and enthusiasm for youth issues”, MP

Louise Upston said. “I certainly look forward to mentoring Katie and working with her and the Youth Advisory Board.” Katie’s success came after impressing the panel of judges that included Hon Louise Upston, Val Ockenden and Luke Kirkeby with a compassionate presentation on her vision for youth, including a wish for children to be able to play freely and safely. “I was very pleased with the quality of applications again this year, and everyone we interviewed were simply outstanding,” Louise said. “I have offered all applicants a role on our Taupō Youth Advisory Board and I have no doubt that the group’s enthusiasm for youth issues will greatly enhance youth

Get gardening

A monthly gardening column, courtesy of Amber Garden Centre

November is a busy time in the garden, as spring rolls into summer with warmer temperatures. Vegetables Time to plant pumpkin, cucumber, courgette, watermelon, pepper, chillies and tomatoes. As early crops of lettuce, radish and broccoli are harvested, plant more. Carrots, parsnips, beans and peas – sow seeds directly into the garden. Before replanting, add compost and sheep pellets to boost soil texture and nutrients for the next crop. Herbs Basil, dill and coriander are short-lived herbs which grow well now. Parsley, thyme, chives and rosemary are longerlived. Picking regularly encourages fresh growth. Borage encourages bees and flowers from many herbs are edible decorations. Lawns Spray with Turfix to eliminate flat weeds and for Onehunga weed use prickle weed killer. Small fruit Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and passionfruit – give a side dressing of sheep pellets. Indoor Plants Spring is just as important for indoor plants. Repot into larger containers as required with new potting mix. Give a gentle cold shower out of the sun to wash any dust build up on their leaves. Perennials Delphiniums, alstroemeria, federation daisies and carnations are all great fillers in the garden to provide colour over the summer months and their flowers are great for picking, too.

SPORT

Gaze grabs second win at nationals Cambridge mountain biker Sam Gaze defended his road honours at the Criterium National Championships over the weekend with a stunning performance around the streets of Takapuna. The double under-23 world champion pushed clear for a solo attack early in the 45-minute event before young guns Campbell Stewart and Sam Dobbs joined him, the trio building an unassailable 25 second lead over a talented field strewn around the 2km circuit. Dobbs, a former St Peter’s student who recently joined the Cycling New Zealand track programme, took the first tilt at a break but in the end Gaze, fresh off third place in the Tour of Southland, held off Stewart, the

Commonwealth Games medallist. “It’s surprising because I’ve only been back in training four weeks including a lap of the South and I wasn’t expecting too much. But it’s good when the legs turn out well and I love racing in front of so many fans here in Takapuna,” Gaze said following his win on Sunday. “With the performance in Southland and now this, I am perfectly on track. Things are looking better than I could have hoped. My coach may not be so happy that I went so hard today but it’s impossible to sit back when you can race in an event like this here in Takapuna.” A few of Cycling New Zealand’s Cambridge-based track cyclists also did well in the competition,

with Raquel Sheath overcoming a packed field in the sprint finish to grab her second elite women’s title, after a few other locally-based Cycling NZ team members battled for the lead. Holly Edmondston held a sixsecond lead from mid-race for about ten minutes before Bryony Botha moved into the first-place position at the final eight-minute mark, followed by Michaela Drummond taking a 12 second lead in the final lap, caught only 50 metres from the finish with Sheath timing her sprint perfectly to edge out her rivals. She finished ahead of Performance Hub rider Georgia Danford and Canterbury’s Sharlotte Lucas to claim the honours.

Local claims sailing title again

By Sophie Iremonger

Tamahere’s Isaac McHardie has claimed bragging rights over the rest of the world alongside NZ team mate William McKenzie after the pair won the 2018 Red Bull Foiling Generation World Championships in Miami over the weekend. The pair were up against 15 other nations in what is the world’s largest youth sailing competition, where

sailors aged 16-20 fly above the water in Flying Phantom catamarans. Held every two years, they were the second Kiwi crew to win the competition after Cambridge’s Micah Wilkinson and Napier team mate Olivia Mackay won it in 2016. Launched as a way to introduce young sailors to the type of cutting-edge foiling technology used in the America’s Cup, it was only the second time the event has been held, making it a New

Zealand-dominated world event with a local sailor on each winning crew. “It was the most unreal feeling flying through that finish line knowing we would be crowned world champions,” Isaac said. “Foiling these boats around a short course at extreme speeds against the world’s best is something I will never forget.” Designed to find sailing’s next wave of talent, those who take part in the Red Bull Foiling Generation are coached

throughout the process by two-time Olympic gold medallists and event cofounders and directors Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher, learning to sail the Flying Phantoms which can reach speeds up to 35 knots. The ocean breeze held strong throughout the three-day competition in Miami over November 9 – 11 (US time), producing fourteen heats of fast, highly competitive sailing. Continued next page

Duo a fitness inspiration

Continued from previous page

By Sophie Iremonger

The Kiwis won the final ahead of Belgium in second and Sweden in third. After exciting action in the early rounds, the final on Sunday (US time) saw all four Flying Phantom hydrofoil catamarans within centimetres of each other to the first mark. But the Kiwis put down their marker from the outset to lead from early on and triumph, despite capsizing just after the finish line. “Every race was very competitive,” said Isaac’s Auckland team mate William, who sails with him in the Olympic 49er class. “The breeze picked up a bit, more than we’ve had in the past few days, and the boats were a lot faster, more out of control, but I think everyone here had a lot of skill. “The 49er isn’t a foiling boat,” Isaac added, “so sailing the Flying Phantoms taught us skills in foiling and speed.” The pair are now heading back to training in their 49er boat over the New Zealand summer to prepare for next year’s European season.

Danny and Mel Burt returned to the New Zealand Fitness Model Search over October 27 – 28, a year after they competed in the 2017 edition, and came away with even better results than expected. The Cambridge parents didn’t make a placing when they competed in the Fit Mum and Fit Dad segments of the competition last year, (though Danny received the Inspiration Award) so they returned this year even better prepared, and it paid off – coming away as the first-place winner of New Zealand’s Fit Dad and second-place winner of NZ’s Fit Mum. As the oldest competitors in their age groups at 45 and 47, they were a little surprised. “I was quite shocked actually,” said Danny. “I didn’t go there to win, just went there to have fun. So to win it, I was just over the moon.” “It’s exciting for me … competing against 20-odd-yearolds,” said Mel, who received a roaring applause on stage when they announced she was a grandmother too. “I think the biggest thing that we got out of the whole weekend is having people come up to you and say how much you’ve inspired them to do something with their own health and fitness,” said Danny. In addition to physical health, the competition focuses on how participants carry themselves in the community, and how they portray health and fitness. When they entered the competition last year the couple set up a Facebook page – which is still running – called MD Fitness NZ, to inspire, advise and update followers on their journey, and since then they’ve managed to instil the idea of healthy eating and exercise in a few more people too. Initially their road to good health started six years ago when Mel’s mum had a non-fatal heart attack, and her son asked if the same thing could happen to her. “That just struck a chord,” said Mel, who soon got Danny on board too. Then a few years later it was Danny who encouraged Mel to compete in the Fit Mums and Dads competition. “Mel’s been the driving force behind it really, in terms of our family life and our commitment to

looking after ourselves and our future,” said Danny. “My dad died at 46, I’m 45, so for me it’s important to look after myself and give myself every chance to be around. I want to be a grandad. And that’s why we do the things we do. People might call us crazy but it’s a good type of crazy … it’s just a lifestyle.” The pair say they feel fitter now than they did in their late teens and early 20s. “Age is but a number,” said Danny, adding that an important piece of advice for parents wanting to get fit was having a reason why. “Your reason for why needs to be really powerful,” said Danny, with Mel adding, “It’s about scheduling time for it too, make it an important part of your day. During times like dropping your kids off at clubs or activities, go for a run or a walk for that hour, I never waste a moment.”

Danny and Mel Burt have returned to Cambridge as New Zealand’s Fit Dad and second-Fit Mum.

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 16, 2018

Match could be vital in chase for national title Sunday’s big football match in Cambridge will play a significant part in deciding which teams stay in the race to become New Zealand’s champion club side. Hamilton Wanderers will play Auckland’s Eastern Suburbs at John Kerkhof Park, kicking off at 2pm on Sunday. The match is part of the ISPS Handa Premiership, the highest level of domestic football in New Zealand. Last weekend’s results leave Wanderers and Suburbs in 3rd and 4th positions on the table, meaning the winner of Sunday’s match will keep within reach of Team Wellington and Auckland City who lead the competition. Wanderers beat Hawkes Bay 2-0

in Napier, with Papua New Guinea international Tommy Semmy scoring his third goal of the season. Suburbs lost 1-0 to Auckland City with All Whites striker Andre de Jong missing a penalty for Suburbs and fellow international Tim Payne going close with a disallowed goal. Both teams will be led out in Cambridge by All White greats. Wanderers are coached by Cambridge’s Ricki Herbert, the former All White player and coach, while Suburbs are coached by New Zealand international Danny Hay. The match is the only opportunity for local fans to see national league football at Cambridge this summer as Wanderers

usually play their home fixtures at Hamilton’s Porritt Stadium. Wanderers asked Cambridge FC to host Sunday’s game to encourage Waipa-based supporters to check out their national league side.

At 11am, Wanderers will play Suburbs in the U-19 National Youth League. The game will feature two Cambridge FC players, Josh Clarkin and Jack Portegys, who are playing their summer football for the Hamilton side.

Cambridge golfer Jill Morgan has returned from a golfing stint in Adelaide, representing New Zealand in a clash against the Aussies for the 2018 Women’s Seniors Trans-Tasman Cup – the first fixture of its kind. The Cambridge golfer made it onto the inaugural New Zealand women’s senior golf team after winning with the Waikato team at the New Zealand Women’s Masters golf tournament earlier this year. It was the second time Jill has represented the country in a first-ever national women’s team. Back when women’s hockey was added to the Olympic line-up, Jill made it onto the first New Zealand team to compete at the Olympic Games. That was in 1984, and now in 2018 she’s made it a doublesuccess competing in the first ever Women’s Seniors Trans-Tasman Cup. “There’s something special about representing your country, and in another sport, I didn’t think that I’d ever – I mean, doing it in one sport is

exciting enough!” Jill said ahead of the competition. “The fact that its’ an inaugural team too is really special.” After a tough battle it was Australia that won the competition, played at the Grange Golf Club in Adelaide October 24 – 26. The Australian team defeated New Zealand by a solitary point, 6.5 matches to 5.5 matches. Australia took a one-point lead into day two after the foursomes and fourball matches on day one, but with six singles matches on the cards, a winner wasn’t established until the second-last match. The tenaciously fought matches were halved 3-3 on the day, but Australia’s overnight lead was enough to seal the win. The Women’s Senior Trans-Tasman Cup will be played every two years rotating between Australia and New Zealand, with players needing to be 55 years of age and over to be eligible. The next match will be played in New Zealand in 2020.

The AGM of Cambridge Tree Trust will be held at the Thornton Road depot on Tuesday, 11th December. Morning tea will be at 10.30am, and the meeting will commence at 11.00am.

The Meadow Walk

The Meadow Walk has become increasingly popular, especially since the Waipa District Council metalled this previously muddy track. The track begins at the bottom of Alpers Ridge Road; although the entrance gate is kept padlocked there is a sturdy stile beside it. The first 7 or 800 metres of the track has been planted up by the Cambridge Tree Trust over the past seven years, funded by a grant from the Waikato River Valley Authority. It is now looking fabulous. As you climb the first rise there is a small orchard where you can pick fruit in season, or admire wildflowers in spring. Along the top the track provides some views of the river, and is lined with groups of Kowhai and massed Renga renga lilies, the latter now just coming into flower. Descending once more to a small culvert you will find a newly planted wetland on the right, with flaxes, oioi, toi toi, kahikatea and other native swamp-loving plants, as well as a few swamp cypresses and Nyssa sylvatica to provide autumn colour. Following on past more native plantings the track then passes between the river bank and houses; be prepared to cross more stiles and several fields of sheep until you reach Fletcher Place. From here you can return to the start via Pope Terrace, or if you want a longer walk, continue on along the Poets Track towards the high level bridge before returning. It is hoped that in the future a new bridge over the Waikato River will provide a link from the Meadow Walk to the Gaslight Theatre and the track to the velodrome and Payne Park.

Local youngest Kiwi ever Mongol Derby “I’m still not sure what to expect. I have heard so many stories, but it’s a lot to wrap your head around. It is a life or death situation,” Elise said. “You get an SOS tracker you can activate, but you have no idea how long it would take for anyone to find you - if they can find you. We will literally be stripped down to our most primitive selves, and I’m really interested to see what I’m capable of.” Her family were initially against the idea but became supportive once they realized how passionate she was. “I just adore the charity I have chosen to raise money for as well,” explained Elise. There is no prize for Elise should she win the derby, but instead her entire venture is devoted to raising funds for the CatWalk Spinal Cord Injury Research Trust. There may be a breakthrough in the science of spinal cord injuries soon, and Elise wants to be a part of it. “The researchers are trying to alter a gene to dissolve the scar tissue in the spine, as that’s what prevents the nerves healing because the scar tissue cannot be penetrated,” she said. An entry to the Mongol Derby is just over £10,000. This includes a donation to CatWalk. But Elise doesn’t do things by halves and wants to raise as much money as she can for the incredible trust. Year 13 St Peter’s student Elise Stables has been selected as the youngest ever New Zealander to ride in the Mongol Derby — the longest, toughest horse race in the world. Riders cover 1000km of Mongolian wilderness on semi-wild horses, changing steed every 40km. It is the rider and horse against the world, and up to the rider to navigate and survive the wilderness. “I am honestly so excited, but I think everyone thinks I’m nuts,” Elise laughed. Elise thought she wanted to go to university to study equine science and agribusiness but changed her mind after visiting Queensland University in August. Undecided on her career path, Elise thought she would take a year off to travel. This just isn’t the typical overseas experience 19-year-olds dream of. Elise was riding horses before she could walk and now works at a racing stable in Cambridge. She has almost a year to prepare for the big event. Elise has to be as fit as she possibly can. She is training for the event by running, swimming and of course, riding. She was given one of the mongol saddles to train in by a friend that had previously done the derby. “The saddle is the weirdest thing to ride in, it almost feels like a kitchen stool and your legs go straight down unlike a normal English saddle,” she said. There are no packed lunches, no beds to sleep in, and no marked course. Horses are regularly vet checked throughout the race.

Weekend of learning Smail NZ amateur for Connor Davison golf champ It was a weekend of learning for 13-year-old Toyota 86 driver Connor Davison of Cambridge, following the first round of the championship at Pukekohe over last weekend, November 2 – 4. Connor’s weekend was hampered early on by a small crash in qualifying, meaning he had to start from the back of the grid for the first race. But despite the error, Connor said it is all part of the learning process in his rookie season. “It was a small error from me. The track was still a bit damp from some earlier rain and on the first lap with cold tyres I hit the kerb into turn two and nudged the wall. The damage wasn’t too bad and we were able to get it fixed and back out on track for the first race,” Connor said. “It is all part of learning but in saying that I would have preferred the opportunity to qualify as track position is vital at Pukekohe.” With the damage minor and the car repaired, Connor was able to make the grid for the three races over the weekend and get his rookie season underway. Despite the incident during qualifying and having to start from the rear of the field, Davison says the weekend still had more positives that negatives. “It wasn’t the plan to start at the back for the races, and I would prefer not to, but it was actually probably not a bad thing as I could focus on my starts not worrying what was behind me.” With backing from Highlands

Motorsports Park in Cromwell, Davison’s next time behind the wheel will be at South Island circuit for his 14th birthday. Davison also has local backing from Wraptrade and recently ITM Cambridge, Davison saying he is very appreciative of the local support. “It was great to have Wraptrade and the ITM Cambridge logo on the car at the ITM Auckland SuperSprints. ITM is a great company in Cambridge where I go to school and having local support is awesome. Nathan and Kerry are great people and they have been so encouraging. I look forward to continuing our relationship going forward.” The next round of racing will use the Pukekohe short track over December 7 – 9.

was tremendously proud of Charlie, who has been under their wing since the age of 12, progressing from their junior squad to now their elite senior team. “It’s fantastic, we’re over the moon,” he said. “In the past two years he’s really put in the hard yards, so to get the New Zealand amateur title is very special.” Charlie, a member of Matamata’s Walton Golf Club, is the sixth Waikato Golfer to win the title in the past 25 years.

A Tamahere local and former St Peter’s student has made the biggest achievement in his young golfing career winning the 2018 New Zealand Amateur Golf Championship. Twenty-year-old Charlie Smail secured the title after defeating Wellington’s Kerry Mountcastle 5 - 4 in the 36-hole final at Wairakei Golf Course on Sunday, November 4. It was a proud moment for his father David Smail, a winner of over NZ$12 million as a professional golfer, who was never able to achieve such heights during his own amateur status. “He’s done well and done us proud,” an emotional David Smail said, “I think I hardly ever made the top 32 (in amateur golfing).” For Charlie, it was an “amazing and very special feeling” to win the final. “I can’t really believe it at the moment,” he said after the match. “This is the biggest win of my career by far.” “We are all immensely proud of what he has done today, and I hope he eclipses us and makes us look silly,” David said. History brought to life By Claire Robson

Around 200 re-enactors donned their uniforms and took part in Armistice in Cambridge at Karapiro, wowing the crowds with six staged battles over the weekend. Complete with blank gunfire and mortar fire, the military action at the event was the result of almost a year of behind the scenes work spearheaded by the junior vice president of the Armistice in Cambridge Committee, Greg Thomas. The battles on the books for this year (not including Roman and Viking skirmishes) were a Boer War battle, the liberation of Le Quesnoy, action from the Vietnam War, re-enactments of battles from the New Zealand Wars and the Battle of the Bulge*, and action from Kursk. Greg, who has been doing re-enactments for the past three years, said that while the shows are reenactments of actual battles, intensive planning is required to preserve the authenticity of the action and make the small numbers of participants look like more. There is also a safety element to be considered, because although the guns are all firing blanks, that can still pose a risk. “Blank weapons can still hurt you from 5-10 metres away, so we have to be safe. We’ve got to make sure our weapons are safe going to and from the battles,” Greg said, adding that each gun is checked before the battle party disperses. The result of more than a year’s work preparing for the weekend, Greg said he has been receiving excellent feedback from the public who were impressed with the professional organisation of the battles at Karapiro. Preferring to call himself a living historian rather than a re-enactor, Greg said for him the pastime is about bringing history out from classrooms and

Guns have to be verified as unloaded at the end of each battle.

commemorating people’s sacrifices. “And getting to hang out with likeminded people,” he said, adding that it is also a massive amount of fun. Planning for Armistice in Cambridge starts each December and requires a tremendous amount of work over the course of the year. Next year will mark 75 years since the Battle of

Monte Cassino – a major battle for New Zealand in WWII – and D-Day, so Greg said people can expect those battles to be featured at the 2019 Armistice event. *For the historically illiterate, the Battle of the Bulge was not fought at Podium café in front of their selection of slices, but rather was the last major German offensive campaign on the Western Front during World War II.

The grateful people of Le Quesnoy embraced Kiwi soldiers as they took back the town, a re-enactment of events a century ago that have not been forgotten.

A crowd gathered to watch the Kiwi troops liberate Le Quesnoy at the Armistice in Cambridge event on the weekend, one of six battles staged at the event.

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 16, 2018

with Jan Bilton

Gifts with Taste Christmas is the season for giving and the personal touch makes all the difference. Gifts from your kitchen are always special. A day spent creating culinary treats can provide a dozen or more thoughtful surprises for lucky family members and friends. Well priced, attractive containers are readily available. All you need to do is fill them with some homemade baking or sweets and tie with a ribbon. Or fill with a dry muffin mix (with instructions to keep it in the refrigerator plus how to add the milk and egg). You could also include a muffin tray. Pomander balls make fragrant gifts. Medieval herbalists used pomanders — mixtures of aromatic dried herbs and spices in cloth bags or perforated boxes — to ward off illness or bring strength and good fortune. A festive version is firm oranges studded with whole cloves either all over or in a diamond or circular pattern. As the oranges dry they release a delicate spicy fragrance. For a stronger fragrance they can be rolled in a mixture of ground cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Leave in a bowl or hang from festive trees. Mmm — the aroma!

Delish with cheeses or meats. 4 (500g) red capsicums, seeded and roughly chopped 3 long red chillies, seeds in, roughly chopped 10cm piece root ginger, peeled and diced 6 large cloves garlic 2 cups white sugar 1 tablespoon salt 1 cup white vinegar 1 bay leaf Place the capsicums, chillies, ginger and garlic in a food processor and pulse until finely chopped. Pour into a heavy-based saucepan. Add the sugar, salt, vinegar and bay leaf. Bring to the boil. Remove any surface scum then reduce the heat and simmer for about 45 minutes until thick. Remove the bay leaf. Pour into sterilised jars and seal. Makes about 2 cups.

Place the contents in a large bowl and mix. Make a well in the centre. Add 2 beaten eggs, 300ml milk and 100g melted butter. Mix until just moistened. Spoon into 12 paper-case lined muffin holes. STREET VIEW:

David Burling (Levin, first time) Has been fantastic, the displays are awesome. Came up for national model competition and this was a bonus.

We headed out to Armistice at Lake Karapiro on Saturday, keen to chat to some of the attendees about the experience, where they were from and if it was the first time they’d been to the event.

Gordon Macrae and Morgan (Te Awamutu, first time) I think it’s a great event, I’ll bring the rest of the family next year.

Megan Apperley (Morrinsville, first time) There’s great stuff for the kids…it’s really nice and this is a great setting.

Julie Samuelson with Skyla (right) (Tauranga, regular participant) Julie and her family brought their tank over, which was offering free rides for kids. It’s come along really well.

Nick McConnell and Vinnie, aged three (Hamilton, first time) All the boys in the family were free so we thought we’d come along, really enjoying it.

Very good, original and well done (not a Zombie story). With only hours until D-Day, a team of American paratroopers drop into Nazi-occupied France to carry out a mission that's crucial to the invasion's success. Their mission is to penetrate the walls of a fortified church and destroy a radio transmitter. As the soldiers approach their target, they soon begin to realize that there's more going on in the Nazioccupied village than a simple military operation. Making their way to an underground lab, the outnumbered men stumble upon a sinister experiment that forces them into a vicious battle against an army of the undead. Overlord is a thrilling, pulse-pounding action adventure with a twist.

An engaging hard-hitting drama with a solid plot and strong acting from all of the cast. Although a heist story, it focuses more on the other elements involved - politics, corruption, greed, revenge and empowerment for women and black Americans. It's unhurried in its delivery, and the style works really well as it doesn't detract from the story. The plot has some good twists and wraps up nicely at the end. A police shootout leaves four thieves dead during an explosive armed robbery attempt in Chicago. Their widows, Veronica, Linda, Alice and Belle, have nothing in common except a debt left behind by their spouses' criminal activities. Hoping to forge a future on their own terms, Veronica joins forces with the other three women to pull off a heist that her husband was planning.

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 16, 2018

CMS Athletics Day biggest yet Cambridge Middle School held their annual school Athletics Day at the Cambridge Athletics Grounds on Vogel St for the first time this year. With the student roll at its biggest yet, the school

had to hold the event at the new location on Thursday last week to cater for the larger student numbers, and it seemed to go down a treat as evident by the cheers heard and smiles seen throughout the day.

A few events and finals had to be carried over to this week, so at the time of going to print we weren’t able to include the full results from the event, so keep an eye out in next week’s issue to find out.
