After the parade comes the carols

Last weekend it was time to line the street and watch the parade – this week it’s time to celebrate the festive season in song. The Cambridge town centre was packed with nearly 2200 people on Sunday for the annual Cambridge New World Christmas Parade. Nearly 700 of those people were taking part in or helping run the parade, which was blessed with better weather than forecast. Tonight and tomorrow (December 7 and 8) it’s time for Carols by Candlelight at the Monavale Homestead. You can get more details about the alcohol-free event, starting at 8pm each day, at capernwray.org.nz. Destination Cambridge chief executive Miff
Macdiarmid, involved in the organisation of the parade for the first time, was delighted with how it went. “I take my hat off to our parade coordinator Vicki Ewing who really runs a seamless day.” Miff, joined by Logan Mackenzie from Cambridge New World as a judge, said it was difficult to choose a winner from the 44 float entries because they were so varied. “The parade really epitomised the colourful community that we live in,” she said. “Creativity and handy-work were in abundance.” The overall winning float was Cambridge Vets, which also won the business category. “Cambridge Vets stood out for their fantastic outfits and the work that had gone into them, their

enthusiasm, and theme efforts,” said Miff. The Pre-schools category was won by Jump Start Educare, Community Groups by KS School of Dance and Leamington School took out the main Schools category. “We are so pleased that all the work on the floats did not get ruined by the weather and that we did not have to implement our cancellation plan,” Miff said. She paid tribute to volunteers from Rotary, the Cambridge i-SITE, Destination Cambridge board members and New World. A treasure hunt held around the CBD on Sunday morning, prompting people to look for hidden kiwi treasures in shop windows and retail stores, was won by Maya Tebbutt and Drakkar New, who each took home a new $400 bike from Evolution Cycles.

News/Editorial
It’s been a busy few days in the newsroom this week and we’ve been working extra hard to put together another great round up of local news for our readers. Thankfully the rain held off long enough for the Cambridge Christmas Parade to go ahead on Sunday, and what a great day it was, you can see more photos from the day on pages 16 and 17. Also this week we have exciting news from Sanctuary Mountain with kiwi numbers on the rise, as well as former Cambridge resident Adelle Stead preparing to (hopefully) trek through 300km of Arctic wilderness by dogsled in the Fjällräven Polar. We also have a few gorgeous photos of local children in the combined school athletics day, along with a heap of other interesting stories from around town. Enjoy! Sophie Iremonger

Letters to the editor
Editor, The disgraceful and deliberate killing of “our trees” at Lake Te Ko Utu defies belief. It follows the intentional destruction of “our” two new London plane trees on Hall St last year, both hacked in half within hours of them being planted. What is it with the mentality of these people who live in our own community? Shame on you. If you don’t like trees go live in a desert. Peter Russell

Excavation work started last week at Victoria Rd site and speculation has already begun on social media about what is being built. Waipa District Council project manager Robin Walker said guesses to date include a supermarket, a manufacturer, a bomb shelter and more houses. But it’s none of those things. “For most people, the truth won’t be anywhere near as exciting,” he said. “The truth is, Council is building a stormwater pond and swales to service properties in Cambridge North. It’s not necessarily glamourous, but it is essential infrastructure.” Walker said Spartan Construction has started work digging out the stormwater pond and will move on to build the two 20-metre wide swales designed to absorb and drain stormwater within the next few weeks. “The first swale will travel along
the expressway to The Oaks. The second swale will eventually travel along Laurent Rd to the rugby club, as development requires it” Walker said. “It’s no supermarket, but at $2.6 million this is a significant project that will improve the way stormwater is managed for current and future Cambridge North residents. Without it, these housing developments simply couldn’t happen.” Work also includes extending the shared pathway along the expressway swale to The Oaks, perhaps the more “exciting” part of the project. “The new shared pathway will mean people can ride all the way to Victoria Rd and hook up with the present cycleway there.” The stormwater and swale project was originally signalled in the 10-Year Plan and is expected to be finished in mid2019.

Vandals cause closure of Waipuke Park
Council contractors arrived at their Waipuke Park worksite on Friday morning last week to find vandals had severely damaged their roller overnight (pictured). Stones were found in the engine, radiator and fuel tank of the roller left at the park entrance, where Splice Construction are sealing the road to the popular lake and playground area on Maungatautari Rd. Council’s roading manager Bryan Hudson described the vandalism as mindless and extremely disappointing. “The damage caused to the machinery is extensive and costly to repair. This
project will improve the experience of visitors to the lake and a setback like this will mean delays.” Hudson said access to Waipuke Park would now be closed to the public when contractor staff are not on site, until work is complete. “We regret having to take this step, but the work will be completed in a few weeks’ time and normal access can then resume. We’ve never seen anything like this before and will be working with police to find the culprits.” Hudson encourages anyone who has any information about the damage to contact Police.
New partnership gives support to women’s racing The fitness-minded crew at Forsyth Barr in Cambridge and Hamilton are right behind moves to link the nationwide company with one of the country’s top elite races - and promote women’s cycle racing in the process. Forsyth Barr has announced a new partnership with the Three Peaks RIDE New Zealand Cycling Festival coming to Waipa for a week in January.
The new arrangement names them official sponsor of the 66km Forsyth Barr Halfling Women’s Classic race, to be held here on Saturday January 26.
Delighted at the prospect of supporting women’s cycle racing through the new partnership are Forsyth Barr’s Hamilton manager Roger FitzGerald, Cambridge manager Michelle Rolley and Cambridge authorised financial adviser Hamish Bond.
The company’s support will also see the entry fee waived for elite women cyclists wanting to take part. RIDE New Zealand’s Cycling Festival Board chairman, Simon Perry, said the waiver was intended to encourage female cyclists “from within the region and beyond” to enter. “It will be a highly competitive race, and it was important to Forsyth Barr and the RIDE board to look at ways at reducing some of the barriers many of our emerging female athletes face when seeking that vital race experience,” he said. “The cost of an entry fee for elite women cyclists is just one of them.” Forsyth Barr is a New Zealandowned investment firm with offices around the country. The company’s Cambridge manager Michelle Rolley said the partnership was a good fit locally and was timed particularly well as the elite women’s classic prepared to come to this region for the first time. “My own background is in triathlon,” she said. “I enjoy a variety of sporting interests, have completed Ironman NZ and done a number of Half Ironmans. We have a strong fitness ethos in this office. Hamish [Bond]
is an elite athlete who moved from rowing to cycling, and a more recent addition is Andrew Flexman, who has had extensive experience in sport.” Michelle said both the Cambridge and Hamilton offices found value in giving back to their local communities, across sports and art-centred events. More recently, the company announced its inaugural Forsyth Barr Charity Brokerage Day, an initiative that resulted in a donation of $452,000 being made to the Auckland City Mission’s HomeGround development. Forsyth Barr’s Hamilton manager Roger FitzGerald said staff in Hamilton and Cambridge were delighted to be involved in the cycling festival. “We have a particular interest in developing initiatives involving women in sport and leadership, hence becoming the naming rights partner of the Women’s Classic was a perfect match for us.” The 2019 Forsyth Barr Halfling Women’s Classic will involve a separate start time and cash prizes for the top five placegetters. The company will also provide the top three women’s Under 19 place-getters with an opportunity to lunch with elite cyclists Alison Shanks and

Hamish Bond, and there will be a Women in Sport “Q & A” session at the Avantidrome on January 23, involving Hamish Bond, Alison Shanks and Rushlee Buchanan. Details are from the Cambridge office. Other events scheduled during festival week will offer various distance options within the Hobbiton Movie Set Gran Fondo, including the 103km Ring Road, an open 66km Halfling race (for men and women), the 22km Merry Meander, and the Pint-Sized Adventure for those aged 10 and under. Michelle believes the new partnership offers great potential for the future, a view echoed by RIDE New Zealand’s Cycling Festival Board member, Graeme Maw. He said it was hoped the arrangement could create an environment where the Forsyth Barr Women’s Classic would be viewed as one of the premier women’s races on the country’s cycling calendar. “Long term, we aspire to make the race a UCIsanctioned event for females, hence providing an awesome opportunity for our New Zealand female riders to gain that valuable race experience at home.”

Good report card for Community Centre By Viv Posselt
Steady growth in demand has seen the adoption of a few changes at Cambridge Health and Community Centre (CHCC) in Taylor St. Guests at Monday’s Christmas gettogether heard from Cambridge Health and Community Trust chairman Lloyd Buscomb that 2018 had been a good year for the Trust and that the business had grown to the point where more structured processes were needed. These include the allocation of special portfolios to each of the six trustees, the setting up of new meeting and reporting protocols, and the establishment of a more comprehensive caretaking role for
a couple who recently took up residence in the on-site ‘Rose Cottage’. Faye Fensham and Hugh McFadden settled into both the cottage and their new role about six weeks ago. Between them, they will take care of the buildings and maintain the grounds. “That has probably been the most significant change,” Lloyd said. “We had previously been employing different people to deal with the multiple tasks involved in caretaking the property. This move centralises all the caretaking and maintenance services. We are growing like Topsy … centralising services makes sense and there has already been an overall improvement in the appearance of the place. We are also

looking at creating more space to cater for the increased demand at the centre.” Also announced on the evening was the addition of Mary Fisher to the team of six trustees. The group now comprises Lloyd Buscomb (chairperson), Laureen Allen, Rob Feisst, Mary Fisher, Bruce Morrison and
Winston Steen. The annual Christmas get-together hosted the centre’s permanent tenants as well as representatives of the many community groups who regularly use CHCC space. More information on the centre is available on their new website: www.chcc.org.nz.
Kiwi numbers on the rise By Sophie Iremonger
Fifteen kiwis have now been translocated onto Maungatautari Mountain as part of the Kiwis for Kiwi programme which began at Sanctuary Mountain on October 1. A four-week old chick was released onto the main mountain in the latest release last week. The partnership with the Kiwis for Kiwi Trust aims to introduce 500 new kiwi inside the Sanctuary Mountain predator proof fence over the next five years. Sanctuary Mountain staff have reported a number of new developments on the maunga. Just recently, the team completed a 21-day survey of the kokako birds which found that a significant amount of breeding had taken place, identifying 24 new unbanded birds on top of the 26 banded birds they had recorded previously. On October 24, two Takahe chicks were born in the wetland enclosure, and are reported to be doing very well under the care of their older sister Jan and their dad Ngutu Whero. The organisation also received $2000 in Jumble Around’s recent annual funding round, which will help support the upkeep of the 47km fence, to fund an arborist carrying out tree trimming requirements, and to update the signages within the mountain’s Southern Enclosure.
The 15th kiwi to be translocated to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari was released last week as part of the Kiwis for Kiwi partnership, pictured before his kiwi wellness assessment being held by Craig Montgomerie, Sanctuary Mountain’s kiwi specialist

Eight of the best for Savannah By Sophie Iremonger
A Cambridge company is showing the way in the bustling townhouse building market. Savannah Construction won the Waikato multi-unit category of the 2018 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards for its construction of eight units in Abbotsford St, on the cusp of Hamilton’s CBD. For owner Matt Mudgway the win was something to celebrate – but it’s also given him a new target. His company is building another set of townhouses in the same street and he wants to see them secure back-to-back wins. “We feel that it’s just the start - we’re going to keep reaching for those targets of quality and assurance. We’d love to get a national title in the next few years,” he said. Matt has full confidence in the quality of the units - “we want these houses to last a hundred years.” Townhouses have become the norm in many of Hamilton’s suburbs and the proximity to the city centre – and Waikato Stadium – has reportedly encouraged one member of the Chiefs squad to move in to one of the new units. The complex, valued between $1.8 and $2 million, was completed in February and had presented the company with plenty of challenges. It had to make the most of limited space on the section and achieved that by
creating a 115sqm floorplan spread over two levels for each unit, which allowed for three double bedrooms and a bathroom on the top floor, and an open-plan kitchen, dining area and lounge below, along with a separate toilet and laundry facilities incorporated into a single garage, with a secondary car park outside. Stacker doors allow the downstairs area to be extended out into a private courtyard. Matt said Archimedia’s design layout played an important role in making best use of the space, and he believed the quality of the workmanship and finishing products were key factors to their success. Judges described the stylish finishes as a significant element to their success. “Modern finishes and fixtures lift the interior from simply stylish to something special,” they said. “The products we used are a bit upmarket, which we were able to capitalise on,” said Matt. “We had different types of fixtures and fittings to suit, from black door handles to stone benchtops. I think that set us apart.” The clean lines and four different types of cladding also impressed the judges. “There’s indoor-outdoor flow, it’s nice and clean, it’s not cluttered yet a lot can fit in there. It’s just a great use of space.” Aside from the 10-unit project across the road, the Cambridge company also has half a dozen builds on the go, including a retirement village, spread between Ngaruawahia, Hamilton and Cambridge.
Matt Mudgway’s Savannah Construction scored a section win in the 2018 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards, for these townhouses in Hamilton.

Public surprised by random acts of kindness
Members of the public have expressed their appreciation of the services and random acts of kindness made by Year 7 St Peter’s students in Cambridge last week. The “Student Volunteer Army” put boots on the ground in the Cambridge community on Tuesday, spending time with
residents at Resthaven, helping the Cambridge Tree Trust plant trees at Lake Te Ko Utu and delivering Christmas cookies and poems to strangers. Casey Gies described the young man who gave her cookies and a poem outside Countdown Cambridge as “so

genuine and lovely”. She bought him a chocolate bar in return. “I was trying to show him that what you give out in life, whether that be something material or simply love and kindness, that it will come back to you one way or another,” she said. “It was a lovely idea and I saw smiles on plenty of customers’ faces and it was lovely to see, particularly the older customers who may not have contact with many people.” Danielle Schaad also received cookies and a poem. “The group of children that I spoke with was well spoken, polite and very engaging,” she said. “If I ran a business or community group, these are exactly the type of people who I would be looking for.” Year 7 Dean Becki Botherway said their focus for the term was about service, and “other people before ourselves”. “As part of this focus we thought it would be good to put our own Student Volunteer Army into action,” she said.

Legendary work wins life membership for Eris By Viv Posselt
Long-time local historian and prolific writer Eris Parker has been made a life member of the Cambridge Historical Society (CHS) – and not a moment too soon, most locals would agree. The honour, awarded at the Society’s late November AGM, makes Eris the 10th recipient of life membership in the Society’s 62-year history. The relatively rare award has been a long time coming for the smiling grandmother described warmly by Society chairman Grant Middlemiss as a “self-confessed rottweiler”. Few people in Cambridge wouldn’t know of Eris. She spent four years volunteering at the Cambridge Museum in the 1980s before becoming its curator for a further 21 years. Throughout those decades and beyond, Eris established herself as the ‘go-to person’ for matters historical in the region, applying a dogged research style into bringing to light stories about the people with ties to Cambridge military, commercial or otherwise. Yet even with all her intuitive ‘nose’ for the hidden, it seems Eris didn’t know the award was coming. “I did get the AGM agenda and noted their intention to award life membership to someone. It didn’t say who, and I must admit that I did wonder at first who it could be going to,” she laughed. There are suggestions that earlier awards from elsewhere have been on offer, but Eris hasn’t wanted a bar of it. This one is different … it smacks of recognition by like-minded people, and she is both delighted and honoured.
Eris Parker receiving Cambridge Historical Society life membership from Society president Grant Middlemiss at last week’s meeting. “I am quite pleased to be up there with all those other fellows,” she said, adding with trademark self-deprecating humour that she read the small print carefully. “I wanted to make sure it was life membership, not a life sentence!” Eris’s segway into matters historical happened almost by chance, with a slight nudge from her mum. Born and bred in Cambridge to parents that hailed
from Whangarei and Wellington, Eris was keen to research her own genealogy and thought she’d drop into the Cambridge Museum to see how smalltown museums did such things. The idea was to get a feel for it, then snoop further afield. The upshot was that she found herself ‘seduced and fascinated’ by the amount of material she needed to sift through,
so much so that she offered to help with the indexing programme, and her years of volunteering at the museum began. In 1992, she went in full-time as the museum’s curator. “We got our computer a year or so later … it was a good time to expand the collection beyond the Cambridge pioneers,” she said. Later, she also extended the museum’s opening hours. In her down time, Eris researched and wrote somewhere between 30 and 40 books, brochures and other documents. Her first book focused on women’s suffrage, something she also made a video of later on. “I realised there were a lot of stories we were leaving out because women were largely ignored in the historical record.” She also made 36 photo books with a focus on Cambridge people, and has done over 80 talks over the past 25 years to various local and regional groups and organisations. When she retired from the museum in 2013, then Waipa District Councillor Barbara Taranaki described Eris as “one of Cambridge’s real treasures”. When presenting Eris with the Cambridge Historical Society life membership, Grant spoke of her having joined the Society almost 30 years earlier, later serving as a committee member, secretary and president. “Eris can best be described as a history nut,” he said. “She thrives on research, her indexing and commitment to tracking down details on Cambridge people and topics is ‘legendary’. In fact, her output is so great that some believe she doesn’t sleep!”

Ashlin Long and Sophie Lee, pictured pulling a few weeds, came up with the idea for doing the project at the Leamington Community Gardens. By Sophie Iremonger
The Leamington Community Garden was brightened up with both community spirit and a fresh coat of paint last week when 31 students from Cambridge Middle School visited as part of a learning enquiry to do a community service project. The old wooden fence lining one side received a multi-colour paint job, weeds were pulled, grass mowed and new seedlings planted, and it was all in good timing for Rocky Teepa, who has run the gardens for a number of years. Rocky underwent keyhole surgery to remove lung cancer earlier this year, and although it was a success, strict doctor’s orders meant he had to take it easy, leaving the garden a little overgrown and behind.
“They’re doing a nice thing, they’ve done awesome. I’m quite proud of this lot,” said Rocky, who helped them out on the day and even picked them up with the Cambridge Travel Lines bus he drives on his afterschool bus run. Impact officers for the project Ashlin Long and Sophie Lee, the ones who originally came up with the idea, said Rocky does so much for the community that by helping him they were helping the community. “He helps give back to the community, so by helping him we’re helping the community,” Ashlin explained. “We’re doing this work for the community, it’s not just for ourselves, it’s for other people,” said Sophie, “and it makes you happy and proud that you can give back.”
We look forward to welcoming you into our beautiful, purpose built salon at Vivo Cambridge!

Short-term safety plans for SH1-Piarere
The NZ Transport Agency has released plans for short-term safety improvements to SH1 from Cambridge to Piarere, which will likely include central median barriers and side barriers, after it put a hold on the extension of the Waikato Expressway to the SH29 Tauranga turnoff. NZTA also said it is planning for future upgrades in the re-evaluation of plans for three Waikato corridors: SH1 Cambridge to Piarere, SH2 Pokeno to Mangatarata and SH29 Piarere to Tauriko. The Transport Agency’s General Manager, System Design and Delivery, Brett Gliddon said making additional safety improvements on the existing
highways is a priority for all three highway projects. “The improvements to SH1 between Cambridge and Piarere are likely to include central median barriers and side barriers, and the provision of safer access to communities living along these sections, and to local roads.” “The extension of the Waikato Expressway to Piarere will be confirmed through the completion of the business case, which will include the best solution for the intersection upgrade at SH1 and SH29. The construction timing will depend on growth and funding priorities across the country. The business case for SH29 between Te Poi
NZTA is planning to introduce central median and side barriers to the SH1 route from Cambridge to Piarere.
Is the product fit for purpose? Occasionally Citizens Advice Volunteers assist callers who believe a product or service they have purchased is not “fit for purpose”. If you believe the Consumer Guarantees Act has been breached you are entitled to go back to the business. They must put it right by offering you a refund or a replacement. If you can’t come to an agreement with the business, you can take the matter to the Disputes Tribunal. For example, if you tell a bicycle retailer that you want a bicycle for mountain biking and they sell you a road bike, then that bike is not fit for purpose and the business must
put that right. Other examples where goods or services are not fit for purpose include: • If you tell a car dealer that you need a car that can tow a boat, but they sell you a car that can’t; • If you ask for a vacuum cleaner that will vacuum pet hair, but the appliance they sell you isn’t powerful enough to do this; • You ask an internet provider for a service capable of having your whole family stream videos and it’s too slow. When you are looking to buy a product or service it’s important to be clear about what you want it to
do, because the business relies on the information you give them to help you choose the right product. Note that if you’re buying goods for business use (e.g. commercial vacuum cleaner) then the business can contract out of the Consumer Guarantees Act. For more information on your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act, check out our website www.cab.org.nz , contact CAB Cambridge on 827 4855 or drop in to see us at 62 Alpha Street. We’re open 9.00am to 4.30pm Monday – Friday.
and Tauriko will focus on safety and resilience improvements, and will likely include intersection enhancements. “These improvements will continue to provide safe and reliable access between Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga,” says Mr Gliddon. NZTA said the construction timing and form of the re-evaluated projects would depend on growth and funding priorities across the country. Timings and next steps for the re-evaluated projects will be confirmed in early-2019. “We appreciate people’s patience as we’ve worked through this important re-evaluation process and recognise the frustration that uncertainty can bring.” More information about the projects and the reevaluation process can be found at www.nzta.govt.nz/ project-re-evaluations.

“We’re lucky to have our big arena roof,” Cambridge Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Operations Manager Vanessa Donnelly said after the Cambridge RDA Gala Day went ahead on Saturday, “even though the weather was fairly bad!” Plenty of families turned out to the first annual event for the not-for-profit organisation, enjoying free sausages, burgers and bottled water thanks to Rapid Relief Team. “These guys really were amazing. After seeing us in the Cambridge News saying we were having a gala day, Christopher from RRT contacted me asking if they could help by supplying the food, and how could we turn down that offer.” Riders were tasked with horse-back challenges as part of RDA’s term RDA horses enjoyed the attention in between showers.
The Cambridge Riding for the Disabled arena roof meant the Show Day could still go ahead despite the rain on Saturday.

Name: Nero Hobbies: Playing with his doggy mates, going for long walks with plenty of time to sniff out the scenery, sunbathing, rolling in the grass. Good habits: Clean, avoids trouble, seldom barks, great in the car and with kids. Bad habits: Jumps up when over excited, but he does calm down. Haven’t seen any others yet although he can be a little fussy with his food. Ideal home: An active home with a fun family who enjoy the outdoors and exploring. Personality type: Nero is a cool guy with a great personality – a loveable goofball. He’s friendly, happy and confident, with a medium energy level. He could potentially be bullied by other strong dogs, it upsets him when other dogs tell him off. In a flight or fight situation, he is a flight. Nero is a small to medium sized guy, great with other dogs (he’s a lover, not a fighter), is scared of goats, completely uninterested in chickens and we believe he would be ok with a cat that stands its ground and lets him know who’s boss (lover, not fighter remember), he’s great with kids and loves grownups too! One of our foster parents took Nero to work with her for the day (she’s a school teacher) and reported that he is amazing with kids – he had an absolute ball and so did the kids! He’s also great in the car, he stays in his seat and settles down for a nap after a minute or two. As with all Pound Hounds Rescue dogs, Nero must be allowed inside to be part of the family. He will also require daily walks or runs, games and fun with his
owner, consistent rules, training, and regular flea and worm treatments. We would love to find Nero his forever humans in time for Christmas so if you think Nero may be the guy for you (or to check out video of him) please head on over to our website to see his profile: www.poundhoundsrescue. co.nz/page/nero.

Over 50? Right size your house Free up your money Find your Freedom Stage 3 – Selling Quickly The 2-bedroom duplex Warwick, 3-bedroom duplex Victoria and 3-bedroom double garage luxury Hampton villas have proved very popular with over-50’s who are downsizing their homes to take advantage of the lifestyle benefits of living at Cambridge Oaks. Since our first residents moved in during April 2018, we now have more than 50 residents enjoying the growing community. If you are considering your move to a lifestyle village in the next 12 months, get in early to take

advantage of the well located Stage 3 houses near our planned facilities. The completed Village will comprise 205 homes designed for independent living, a luxurious Village Centre forming the social hub of the Village, and sought-after facilities for motorhome owners at ‘The Stables’ – parking, washdown/dumpstation areas, storage and recreation sheds. There is additional convenience next door with a commercial development that incorporates a proposed cafe/ bistro and 7-day superette.
The Freedom Difference While Freedom Lifestyle Villages are registered under the Retirement Villages Act (2003), providing full legal and financial protections, there are major points of difference in our model. Residents live independently in a safe, secure over-50s community of like minded people. No daily in-home support or medical care is provided - but all lawns, grounds and communal facilities are looked after by Freedom. Most significantly, Freedom provides for potential capital gain if it comes time to sell - based on the prevailing market value and not your original purchase price. This is unlike other retirement villages where your loss of ingoing equity can be substantial from the day you move in. Cambridge Oaks can be a very affordable option for you, but we do not compromise on house design, functionality or quality. Show homes are open for inspection every day, weekdays and weekends. Our lifestyle consultants can guide you through options and answer your questions about over 50s lifestyle living and the benefits of the Freedom model.

Scooters negotiate obstacle courses Low hanging trees, uneven footpaths, tree roots, a shortage of pedestrian crossings and lack of training are the biggest safety issues facing Cambridge mobility scooter users, says a leading Waikato disability advocate. John McIntosh, who works as community liaison for Life Unlimited Charitable Trust, said he spoke to several people at a recent mobility scooter safety awareness session held at Cambridge Resthaven and the list of concerns were worrying. Mobility scooter-related injuries are on the rise in New Zealand. In August a woman in Tauranga died after her scarf was caught in her mobility scooter wheel and last month a building development company was fined $100,000 after a retired man fell from his mobility scooter on a damaged piece of footpath and died. “Training is absolutely critical. People using scooters need to be aware of the dangers and pitfalls before they venture out. One lady I spoke to had been gifted a second-hand mobility scooter and she was scared stiff about riding it,” he said. “It’s not as simple as just getting on any scooter. They’re made with different builds in mind and putting a little old lady on a big, grunty scooter can be a recipe for danger.” He said others at the session talked about users preferring the roads to footpaths. You do not need a driver’s licence to operate a mobility scooter but if there is a footpath, you need to be on it. John, who was born with scoliosis, or curvature of the spine, says his disability has slowed him down in recent years. His advocacy work on behalf of Life Unlimited involves talking to community groups and holding Disability Start workshops, which educate employees about disability issues and the inclusion of disabled people in society. Earlier this year he spoke to Waipa District Council in support of a change to the Public Places Bylaw

The change was adopted by the council on October 30. “There’s nothing worse if you have a disability, or you are blind, using a walker, a wheelchair or a mobility scooter than having alfresco dining taking up all the space. “It forces people away from the footpath and into

winning wasn’t quite so exhilarating. “It hurts!” he laughed, still beaming after crossing the finish line. The 100 metre sprints and grand relay final wrapped up a day of athletics organised by Leamington School and Sport Waikato, with teams from Leamington, Cambridge East, Cambridge Primary, Hautapu and St Peter’s Catholic taking part, as well as a combined team of winners from the rural schools athletics day, representing Kaipaki, Roto-o-rangi, Karapiro, Horahora and Te Miro.
As the Cambridge Combined Schools Athletics came to a close on Friday last week, several records from shotput throws to long jump leaps had been broken in the event’s second year of record keeping. Holly Stewart set a new record in the 10-year-old girls high jump, flying over a 1.3 metre bar, and went on to win the final in the 10-year-old girls 100 metre sprint. Still puffing after crossing the finish line, she described the victory quite simply. “I just like sprints,” she said. Theo Anthony was rapt to finish things off with a first-place win in the ten-year-old boys 100m sprint final after a few third-place performances earlier in the day. “I was pretty chuffed,” he said. After winning the 11-year-old girls final Victoria Bunce said the sprints were much more fun than the school cross country earlier this year, “because it’s so far!” she Relay runners, lined up in their school teams, smile for the camera ahead of their laughed, describing her final race. final race as “really cool”. Ten of the best By Sophie Iremonger
Tom Voyle Sports Park has reason to celebrate with ten softballers named on Waikato regional teams recently – an achievement which club chairman Wayne West says was possible thanks to the young players’ dedication to skills development, and simply a love for the game. “It’s just another excuse to go play more softball,” said Wayne’s son Tyrone West, who made the under 18 men’s team – his fourth time on a regional team. “I was happy whether I made it or not, I just wanted to play, that’s all I want to do.” Playing in the under 18 national tournament next month in Christchurch, Tyrone will be up against friends from his old club in the Canterbury team. Besides having a bit of fun rivalry with them, he’s most looking forward to taking on the Auckland team. “Auckland’s always a great game to play because they have so many players to pick from, their team is really talented,” he said. “It’s such an exciting game.” Tyrone’s plan to beat the Aucklanders consists of watching them in their games against other teams during the tournament, picking up the habits and
styles of their catcher and pitcher. “And then we can just learn off that, so that way we know what we’re up for in the next game,” he explained. “It’s always good fun at tournaments, and it’s amazing how much you still don’t know about the game even when you’ve been playing for so long, you can still learn more as you go.” Tyrone’s brother Jordan, who made the under 15 boys team this year – his third time on a regional team – said the best part of the game was the community. “You become a family,” he said. Alyssa Fenemor, who made the under 13 girls Waikato team for the second year, said she’s really looking forward to seeing the friends she made at the last national tournament. “Everyone’s so nice to each other, but then when it comes to game time they get competitive,” she said. The other seven local players to make regional teams, heading to national tournaments in January, include: Daniel de Jong, Western Leadbetter, Riley Jeffcote (all under 15 boys), Blade Philip (under 13 boys), Gina Geill (under 15 girls), Natalie Young (under 13 girls) and Cody McKush (under 23 men).

TIRAU - A GREAT Tirau – Christmas shopping in a great little town
Art for Christmas
Experience the magic of shopping in the Corrugated Capital of the World.
Experience the magic of shopping in the Corrugated Capital of the World. Nestled in the fertile South Waikato countryside, the vibrant town of Tirau offers a large variety of independently-owned boutique shops, factory outlets, art galleries, cafés and restaurants. It is a haven for festive shoppers and ideal for people wanting to get all their shopping done in a day. The town delivers a vibrant retail experience and is a refreshing change from mall shopping. Parking is free and it’s so easy to walk everywhere. There are superb eats to enjoy between bouts of shopping, and inviting spots, indoors and out, to sit and relax. The diversity of shops means there is something for all budgets, from designer gifts to Christmas bargains, as well as unique gifts and handicrafts that you won’t find anywhere else. Friendly service, a festive atmosphere, together with charm and character, make the town a fun place to shop and a hard one to beat this Christmas.
Décor delights Christmas gifts and this yuletide stockings stuffers If you’re looking for something special and ecofriendly, Paisley House at 28 Main Road is the perfect destination. The store not only specialises in directly imported and hand-crafted furniture and home décor, but also stocks a wide range of décor pieces sourced from New Zealand wholesalers. Conscious of the environment when sourcing furniture, Paisley House owners handselect products from India and keep prices as low as possible. Wood products that are purchased derive from sustainable forests and governmentcontrolled fair trade, or are ecologically reclaimed from unused buildings, boats, and the like, where possible. Free gift wrapping is offered.
La More Sweets and Ice Cream at 3 Main Street has a great range of Christmas goodies, including organic chocolate, marzipan from Germany, and new fudges and marshmallows. The enticing candy store has what one happy customer describes as a ridiculously fun selection of lollies. They come loose, packaged and in tins, and there are options to customise your gift by hand selecting confectionery and personalising a gift basket. Homemade fudge and brittle are also available. If you need something sweet to add to a Christmas stocking, head to La More. And while you’re there, treat yourself to a whopper of an ice-cream.
Art and plant boutique, Deciduus, at 17 Main Road, showcases seasonal collections in painting, illustration, photography, ceramics and textile design. It is the go-to place to source original New Zealand-made art. Joy is the gallery’s last show for the year. Running until December 31, Joy is an invitational collection curated by artist and Deciduus owner, Santie Cronje, with works inspired by all aspects of water, places and summertime in New Zealand. Featured artists include Hamilton’s Shirley Cresswell; Narelle Huggins, Trish Seddon and Jo Beckett from Cambridge; and a delightful group from the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. Narelle has created a bright and vibrant collection of works celebrating towns in the Waikato. She draws inspiration from the contrasting landscape of the places she has lived in and travelled to. Trish Seddon is a
ceramic artist who sculpts and glazes pieces in rich tones. Potter Jo Beckett is a full-time artist who works from her home studio in Cambridge. Deciduus supports and showcases New Zealand makers. The store also has a beautiful selection of indoor plants to brighten up your Christmas. Hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00am – 4.00pm. Closed Mondays. Joy is a cash and carry exhibition. Works can be purchased and wrapped for Christmas.

Tirau real estate in demand Over the past year Tirau has experienced an influx of out-oftowners purchasing residential and lifestyle properties. South Waikato people in outlying areas are also gravitating to Tirau due to the town’s vibrancy and ambience. 2019 will see a couple of small subdivisions come on the market
and opportunities to buy bare land. House prices in Tirau are around $200,000 - $400,000 cheaper than in Cambridge, and the travel distance between the two towns is only 20 minutes. Commercial real estate is in scant supply, with only one building available. Two cafés are currently on the market.

LPG GAS REQUIREMENTS
Submitted by Marie Davis, chairperson of the organizing committee, Altrusa International Inc Altrusa International Club of Cambridge held a ‘Day of Pampering’ for six deserving women in our community recently. The lucky recipients were taken to receive two beauty treatments each from Mellie G’s beauty salon in Leamington and then to a two-course lunch at the Homestead at Lauriston Park retirement village. After a couple of hours to sit, chat and relax, they went home with a selection of skin care products, a bunch of flowers and a shepherds’ pie for the family dinner.

By Anne Galbraith, Cambridge Tramping Club To celebrate our Christmas, Cambridge trampers took themselves into a littleknown area east of McLaren Falls Park. Ngatuhoa Outdoor Education Lodge is 55 minutes’ drive from Tauranga, situated in native bush on a volcanic plateau. As a result of milling in the 1930s the camp left by the loggers has morphed into the Education Lodge. A water driven generator which served the camp is an unusual legacy. The weather report was dismal, it started raining about 7am on Saturday and continued for most of the weekend. Nevertheless, 14 intrepid people departed for a sixhour tramp into the bush to see several waterfalls, returning tired, damp and happy. Suitably adorned in a variety of Christmas head gear we all sat down to a delicious dinner. Although Santa could not come, his welldressed offsider Elfie did, with her special sack from which amid much hilarity we drew, opened
and swapped some very interesting pressies. The camp was dark and silent by 9.30-ish. Next morning most did small tramps around some of the power infrastructure which is now part of the national power supply. The camp caretaker plucks possum for fur from the possums caught in the many traps
he has around the camp environment. Above us a fat kereru silently watched as he devoured tender kowhai shoots. In the misty hills above us rimu and totara glistened. Some were fortunate to see whio ducks on the canal. All too soon it was time to pack up, cleaning was rapidly done then
we wound our way back along the tortuous road to McLaren Park. Yet another weekend to an interesting venue was over. Our last tramp for the year is on December 9 to Mt Pureora, near Tokoroa. Please phone Prue on 07 827 5701 or 021 215 2084 for information.
Fourteen Cambridge Tramping Club members completed a six-hour tramp in the bush, crossing streams along the way.

How to send Adelle From the couch out into the cold So just who’s
It’s 300km of Arctic wilderness. More than 200 highly skilled sled dogs and a group of ordinary people just like you. This is Fjällräven Polar, a journey you’ll never forget. Want in? The polar.fjallraven.com homepage offers that invitation – and 25-year-old former Cambridge resident Adelle Stead definitely wants in. Adelle moved to Denmark in 2016 after her Danish partner was accepted into University there. She had spent all her life in the Waikato – mainly on a dairy farm in Horahora – attended Cambridge High School and was a competitive rower for the Waikato Regional Performance centre and also worked for a year at the Avantidrome. “I always wanted to try and live somewhere in Europe for a part of my life. It ended up being Denmark because my boyfriend was accepted into university over here and is Danish, so I wanted to try living the Danish life - he grew up in New Zealand and had not experienced the entire Danish lifestyle,” she said. “I came without knowing a word of Danish and have learnt the language and am working over here. The challenge of communicating and everyday learning something new from the culture and language is what keeps me here - I’ve never experienced daily challenges in this sense before and I’m really drawn to it.” She was also drawn to the Fjällräven Polar, a trek by dogsled through the Arctic for which there are places for 24 people, from all around the world, who apply to be part of the adventure.
They then seek votes on line in the race to get a starting place. The trek begins in Signaldalen, Norway and finishes in Väkkäräjärvi in Sweden. Learning from Fjällräven’s team of experts, the trekkers drive their own dogsleds, take care of their own dogs, prepare all their own food and set up their own camps. Adelle said she first heard of the Fjällräven Polar a year ago. “I entered and competed in an event called the Fjällräven Classic, which is a similar concept, where you hike for five days across 110km with thousands of competitors, in northern Sweden in the summertime - it was an absolutely amazing experience.” For the Fjällräven Polar “you enter into a region of the world of which your home country is a part of. From there, the person with the most votes in each region (there are 12 regions all together) automatically gets a spot at the Fjallraven Polar, and the people from Fjallraven also vote for one more person from each region - making up the 24 competitors.” Adelle said she had no experience with sled dogs or traveling in the arctic. “But the great thing about the event is that you don’t need this, as you spend a few days before the event learning the skills required and you’re with the group of 24 people at some point during the days. Of course, it requires a certain level of fitness to do this, and I trust myself that I’m fit enough to do this, based off my everyday training and lifestyle.” You can vote Adelle for me by heading to polar.fjallraven.com and searching for her name under entries. Then click on her profile and click vote. The voting is linked to Facebook. Voting closes on December 15.
PICTURED LEFT: Adelle Stead hopes to trek by dogsled through the Arctic as part of the Fjällräven Polar – but she needs votes to get there.
boxing clever?
You pays your money and you take your chances. TV viewing has morphed in recent years from a 1-2-3 plus Sky diet and Prime to a world of Netflix, pops ups, Freeview and pay-per-view. For those with an interest in boxing and an inclination to the latter (or access to a bar showing the events) last weekend served up a choice of watching giants Tyson “the Gypsy King” Fury and Deontay “the Bronze Bomber” Wilder slug it out in Los Angeles, or Jeff “The Hornet” Horn take on Anthony “The Man” Mundine. Both fights were preceded by the mandatory slap talk and, ever since a young man called Cassius Clay showed how it was done, some headline grabbing jousting at the weigh-in. The Friday night (our time) scrap across the pond presented very much as second best, so I opted to invest $39.95 on the big boys. Which was just as well, since The Man was counted out after just 97 seconds. I don’t know what the Aussies had on the undercard, but I’m betting those who did invest in that fight will have been less than impressed. The Sunday match up from the US had all the glitz and glamour but I wasn’t expecting Fury, who had shed more than some people weigh to get fit after battling depression, to last more than four rounds An old guy called Muhammad Ali tried that and lost his last two fights. But this fight went the distance and it was an absolute cracker. Tyson Fury survived two knockdowns, including one in the final round no man should have got up from. I had him clearly ahead on points though. Up until then, it was Deontay was “he gone today” Wilder. But last rounds knockdowns are a dangerous thing. “Watch for a draw!” I told my fellow viewer on the next lazy boy. Sure enough, Alejandro Rochin scored it 115-111 to Wilder. Robert Tapper has Fury up by one – but the draw was clinched by an Englishman, Phil Edwards, who had it 113-113. The thing about boxing, and pay per view, is that you get your money’s worth when you don’t get your money’s worth. It’s the dodgy decisions, the politics, the Don Kings, the firstround knockouts which keep us talking about it. We’ve been robbed. A 90 second fight and a dodgy decision. We are outraged. We’ll never put our money down and takes our chances again, we say. So, we have a multimillion-dollar heavyweight rematch in the making, a young Aussie looking for bigger and better things, and a loud-mouth confined to the history books. Because we all know that when boxers say they are retiring, they mean it, don’t we? And when we say we’ll never get pay per view, we mean that too, don’t we?

FUNNY GIRL – Live Cinema. Sheridan Smith gives the performance of a lifetime in this unforgettable production of Funny Girl. We are excited to give audiences the opportunity to see the show in the cinema. With music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill and book by Isobel Lennart, the Broadway smash which skyrocketed Barbra Streisand to stardom, was revived with Sheridan Smith playing Fanny Brice, who rose from the Lower East Side of New York to become one of Broadway's biggest stars.

ROSE Rose Jones (Cybill Shepherd), 67, is a mom and ex- cop. She is also a widow, desperately lonely since her husband died. Rose is a person who has played it “safe” all of her life; never a bold adventurer, or a chance taker. All that changes when, informed that she has a crippling illness she decides to “escape” by taking a solo road trip -- in her wheelchair. This is a rich bittersweet drama and beautifully crafted film, a little gem.
