Sporting success set in bronze By Sophie Iremonger The road to success hasn’t stopped for a worldchampion sportsman whose plaque on the Walk of Fame was unveiled on Tuesday. Long-time Cambridge local and three-time New Zealand representative Doug Mienie was commended for his years of success in sport with the installation of a bronze star plaque on Duke St, near Anzac St, this week. But it’s just another rung on the success ladder for Doug, who plans to attend the powerlifting world champs in South Africa in 2020. “I’ll be 80 then! So there’s some new records to be broken,” laughed Doug, who has set numerous international powerlifting records in recent years, in addition to his successful sports career spanning back to the 1980s. Back then he was among the world’s best in bodybuilding, representing New Zealand five times and making the top ten in the world, as well as earning four New Zealand titles in the sport. As a master black-belt Doug has also represented the country in Judo three times, as well as placing second in freestyle wrestling on the world stage. In addition, he won two gold medals for swimming at the 2009 Masters Games. Waipa Mayor Jim Mylchreest described Doug’s success as “just fantastic”, “especially in multiple sports too which is really great,” he said. “It’s just fantastic for the town to have sports people of this calibre.” Doug, who still competes and trains others in powerlifting, said it was very humbling to receive the plaque. “I’m just very pleased and thankful to Council for the acknowledgement,” he said. The latest plaque reveal was the first of five plaques being added to Cambridge streets this week. Also on the cards were rowers Eric Murray and Hamish Bond, BMX rider Sarah Walker and squash champion Joelle King, joining 35 other plaques recognising The numerous international successes of Cambridge sportsman Doug Mienie (right) were recognised this week when Cambridge’s internationally lauded sports stars. Now ’ear this: there’s honest folk about A needle in a haystack or an earring on a supermarket site? The chances of finding either are remote – but long-time Cambridge resident Sophie Read saw the odds beaten, thanks to someone showing real Christmas spirit. She lost an earring while on a Thursday outing with husband Ron and knew her chances of finding it were slight.

Editor, While empathising strongly with Peter Russel’s feelings on the vandalism of local trees, I must assert that there is more than one side to such a matter. In our local reserve area, the green belt, we are suffering from invasive behaviour to plant deciduous saplings in an area with numerous pods of excellent evergreen natives. The locals were not thought about or consulted for their opinions and desires by the organisation which performed this work. These graftings are totally out of place in the placid atmosphere here that prevailed through sun, wind, fog and frost, and are seriously spoiling the nature of the area. This is not to be taken as being biased - we have many native and deciduous plants in our own garden nearby. Only strong verbal resistance from myself and my neighbours kept our local area of the park clean of these planting intrusions, leaving open space for the local children to play games, and leaving room for the tractor mowers to operate efficiently. Others, not so outspoken, were not so lucky, or missed the opportunity because they did not know what was happening. Many of the large native specimen pods, which are a great bird roosting habitat, have been severely attacked on the undersides, one even stripped right back to bare cabbage tree trunks. This has exposed piles of rubbish in many, including a large tractor tyre, what looks like cattle manure, garden clippings, and so on. Another major concern is that when the southerly winds start blasting through this exposed area in winter, and updrafts funnel up through the low level holes in the pods, many birds will die. Doug Harris (abridged)

Sophie and Ron have been Cambridge residents for 32 years, and after moving south from Hamilton opened The Book Gallery in Duke St. The gold and silver earring was bought about 18 years ago in Warkworth and what made it special was that it was a clip-on. “I don’t have pierced ears, and finding clip-ons can be a challenge,” she said. “So when I realised I was missing one, I was horrified.” Sophie returned, with the earring’s lonely mate, to New World in Cambridge to see if anyone had handed the other one in. “One staff member said: “oh yes it was here” – and another then came and said it had been locked away for safe keeping,” Sophie said. “I was so pleased that they would take such care of a piece of costume jewellery – and also that someone had been so kind as to pick it up and hand it in.” She was so impressed, she wrote a

letter to the Cambridge News saying: “I would like to thank the anonymous customer at New World on Thursday 6th who found my lost earring and handed it in to the staff…. you made my Friday! And thanks too to the New World staff who were very helpful.”
Eric’s top of the tree New Cambridge Tree Trust chairman Eric Todd jokes it wasn’t long ago that the members could have pulled together enough supporters for a netball team. Today, he says, there are enough to line up and play bullrush. The trust, a volunteer non-profit organisation dedicated to beautifying Cambridge, elected Eric as its chairman on Tuesday. He succeeds Don Willoughby. “Our membership is growing,” he says. “But at the same time, the average age of our supporters is about 70 – and we have 24 projects on the go now, and they all need maintenance. I’m hoping we can attract even more people to help.” Eric and wife Jan moved to Cambridge eight years ago. The keen gardeners soon joined the Tree Trust and it is now their passion. Evidence of their contribution to the ongoing beautification of Cambridge can been seen at Lola Silcock Park, where they have spent a great deal of time working. The riverbank park commemorates Lola Silcock, who was instrumental in starting the Cambridge Tree Trust. Arriving in Cambridge was no accident. Eric and Jan had worked growing dessert grapes for the Japanese market on the Bombays and having
driven through Cambridge, decided the town of trees was the perfect place to retire. Eric hopes to see Cambridge’s parks and reserves getting more patronage as people realise what treasures they have on their doorsteps at the many parks the Trust is involved in working on. FRIDAY DECEMBER 14, 2018
No regrets as Maree signs off By Viv Posselt
Departing Cambridge East School assistant principal Maree Woodall is going to be sorely missed for a host of reasons it seems … her drive and passion for the kids, her “full-steam ahead” approach to anything and everything. Then there’s her sense of humour, and oh yes, the talking. Glancing at husband Bryan during her farewell last Friday, Maree rather tellingly said: “You know those 10,000 words I use at work, well from now on …” So, things are clearly going to be a lot quieter at the school from now on; perhaps not so much for builder Bryan, it should be said. The couple are headed to Whitianga before Christmas, taking this next stage of their life to the Coromandel and whatever awaits them up there. For the school, however, this is much more than just losing a teacher and assistant principal. It’s like losing a whole family. That’s because Maree, Bryan and their three grown boys - Izac, Jordan and Mason – were pupils, and Bryan has done a raft of work in the school grounds through the decades. Rotorua-born Maree admits she will miss it all. “This has been my primary school since I was eight. It’s ended up being more of a lifestyle than a career for me, one that I chose and that I’m immensely proud of. “I’m really going to miss the children, watching them grow … and I’ll miss my awesome colleagues. I’m going to miss the professional growth the senior management team has given me. They’ve pushed my thinking so much, helped me grow as an educator.” Maree qualified as a teacher in Waikato, then worked at Te Awamutu Intermediate School for just over a decade before joining Cambridge East School 16 years ago. She quickly moved from a part-time to a full-time role, teaching across the grade levels and going on to lead the school’s SENCO team – as Special Education Needs Coordinator. Two years ago, she became assistant principal. She said the wellbeing of the children she works with has always been at the centre of everything she has done individually, and is at the heart of team efforts at Cambridge East.
Maree Woodall leaves an imprint on her colleagues and school families. Here are some of their thoughts:
Maree Woodall at her school farewell, flanked by current Cambridge East principal Hamish Fenemor (left) and former school principal John Bullick.
“Fundamentally every child deserves the right to education and the chance to learn. Teaching allows you to do the best with what you have got. It is really important to us here that no-one gets left behind – everybody belongs to the Cambridge East community. That has always driven me; it’s a huge mission, a huge job. I’ve never regretted going into it for a second.” She takes a positive approach to increased technology in teaching and the changing classroom environment, viewing the changes as opportunities to better prepare today’s children for a working world that didn’t exist when she started out. Maree has chalked up a few catchphrases for herself, particularly among her colleagues. She’s known as ‘short straw’ because she’s always the go-to person for queries of all sorts. But it’s her ‘so what, now what’ approach to moving past a problem to identifying a solution that has stuck with everyone the most. She will leave a great deal of herself behind at Cambridge East – not the least of which is a Bryancrafted coffee table on which is printed a circle of Maree’s favourite Dr Seuss sayings.
Vandalism update Police are encouraging members of the public to contact them with any information regarding the vandalism of a roller at Waipuke Park, which was severely damaged when someone put stones in its engine, radiator and fuel tank. Skid marks were also found on the ground at the site where the roller was damaged, near the park entrance on Maungatautari Rd. Police have made a forensic assessment for fingerprints, but have not yet confirmed any further lines of inquiry. Anyone with information can contact
Police anonymously via 0800 555 111. In other vandalism news, Police are continuing enquiries into the poisoning of five established trees on the southern side of Lake Te Kō Utu, which included three native totara, a cryptomeria and a cedar. They were found in poor condition with drill holes indicating poisoning, and have already gone brown and lost many leaves. Council confirmed last week that the trees would eventually be felled, but has not yet set a date for the work. “Council is continuing to monitor the trees to ensure they don’t become a risk,” a spokesperson said.
“Maree is the person who always goes the extra mile. She has been instrumental in helping the school challenge traditional the model and move into new ways of learning. She also talks flat out … and doesn’t suffer fools. It gets under her skin when things don’t go right for our learners – she wears that close to the surface.” – Cambridge East principal, Hamish Fenemor. “The skills she has, her commitment is absolutely huge. Nothing is too much trouble ... and her sense of humour is top notch. Her departure will leave a hole in the school and in the community.” – John Bullick, previous Cambridge East principal. “Having Maree around is like having an extra mum for your kids. We never have to worry.” – Cambridge East mum. “Everyone adds something to the school, but Maree adds a really special flavour. She is a special kind of individual … one of those unsung heroes.” – School BOT member, Dylan Newbold. “Maree goes full steam ahead at everything. She has immense drive, incredible passion.” – Cambridge East colleague.

New principal for Cambridge High Cambridge High School has announced its new principal for the New Year, Greg Thornton. The Auckland native, who has spent the last five years as principal of Tin International College in Hong Kong, will shift with his wife and two kids back to New Zealand to commence the new role at the end of January. The appointment comes after former Cambridge High School principal Phil McCreery retired earlier this year after 13 years as principal. “Phil has done an outstanding job in leading our school and must take full credit for making the school the great place it is today,” said Karl Thornton, chairman of the Cambridge High School Board of Trustees. “He has built a very strong and capable leadership team who are continually searching for ways to improve the outcomes for our staff and students.” Karl Thornton, who confirmed there was no relation to the new principal, said it had been “a lengthy but very thorough appointment process” selecting the new

principal, gaining the help of an external consultant to conduct numerous consultation meetings with students, staff and wider school community to get an idea of what was wanted in their new principal. “The interviews took the entire day and all those interviewed did an outstanding job, making our decision very difficult.” Greg Thornton was the deputy principal at Mount Aspiring College in the South Island before his shift across the Pacific, and prior to that worked as a teacher and head of faulty at Takapuna Grammar, Manurewa High School and Rangatoto College. He now plans to set up base in or around Cambridge.
“For us as a family, living in Hong Kong has been a very rich experience for us all and, surprisingly, not just about skyscrapers,” he said. “For instance, we live in the mountains at the base of beautiful walking trails with resident wild pigs in the neighbouring jungle. We have also discovered a lot about other cultures and made a diverse group of friends. However, we have always wanted to come back home to provide our children the chance to grow up as New Zealanders are very excited about the opportunity to be a part of the Cambridge community.”
Ultrafast broadband comes to Matangi Michael Cornelius has been hanging out for faster internet speeds and is very happy to be the first Ultrafast Fibre (UFF) connection in the Matangi/ Tamahere area. The area is part of Ultrafast Fibre’s second phase rollout expanding into 27 smaller towns and communities in the central North Island. Streaming video content has been Michael’s main motivation for wanting a faster broadband speed, seeking inspiration via YouTube videos as a keen hunter. “It’s great to have a top rate internet speed, even though I’m living just outside of the city,” he said. As a first response linesman for WEL Networks, the connection has also come as a useful backup for his work. “If I ever need to access job files for emergency calls out, there will certainly be no issues downloading what I need to,” he said. The Matangi and Tamahere community is the largest of 27 additional towns included in the expanded rollout areas across the central North Island. Over 25,000 addresses will be able to be connected once the build is finished by December 2019. A full works schedule can be found at www. ultrafast.co.nz.

Carols draw large crowd to Monavale
Photo - Michael Jeans
By Sophie Iremonger Hundreds of people visited the Monavale Homestead over the weekend as Capernwray New Zealand put on their annual Carols by Candlelight event. With about 350 people attending each night, centre director Peter Bichan said the event was once again a success, pulling in similar numbers to last year, and described it as a great way to kick off the festive season. “It was a lovely, dry night,” he said, relieved that Thursday night’s showers didn’t continue onto Friday and Saturday night last week, when the event was held. “We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We had great attendance, a good supper, and the students put on some great singing.”
With the theme for the night being “light”, Capernwray’s bible school students, 30 of whom sang in the choir, put on a three-scene drama depicting the modern day challenges of living
in light and dark. Following the centenary of the end of World War 1 last month, Bichan also stood and spoke on the theme of coming out of darkness and into light, relating this to the end of
the war. Bichan said they were very happy with the strong attendance, and the spectacular evening weather which made it all the more special. “It was a
wonderful start to the Christmas season,” he said. On Wednesday evening this week the bible school students had their final graduation for the year.
Cinema Italiano Festival in Cambridge Love, “Italian style” will be celebrated when the Italian Film Festival starts its Cambridge season on January 14 at Tivoli cinema. Beginning in Christchurch, the Cinema Italiano Festival is travelling throughout the country, with festival director, New Zealand actor and playwright Paolo Rotondo noting that this year’s film line up will “treat audiences to the countless manifestations, flavours, colours and expressions of love”. “Love in all its forms continues to dominate Italian Cinema and is the theme we are celebrating,” he said. “Italian culture has always been synonymous with romantic love, but in 2019 we see an evolved expression of this.”
“From the love of a father attempting to protect his son from the horrors of life in Life is Beautiful, to the complex love of conjoined twins in Indivisibili, to the love of a brutal and exquisite tradition of the ancient horse race of Palio, to the hilarious body swapping exploration of marital challenges in Moglie e Marito, love is at the centre of the Italian psyche.” For bookings, tickets and information visit www.cinemaitalianonz.com. Grey Power award for Jocelyn Cooney By Viv Posselt
In accepting life membership from Cambridge Grey Power earlier this month, Jocelyn Cooney acknowledged the important work being done by the organisation. A strong admirer of Grey Power’s advocacy for the welfare and wellbeing of those aged 50 and over, she said: “The fact it is a neutral organisation, with no political affiliation, makes it a very effective organisation, one with an assertive voice of influence in the political arena. There is no doubt
it does a great job in representing its membership.” Jocelyn accepted the honour from Cambridge Grey Power president Val Massey during the organisation’s annual Christmas lunch, held at the Cambridge Health and Community Centre on December 5. Val told the more than 40 members present that Jocelyn had been associated with Grey Power Cambridge since its inception 23 years ago, and she was delighted to present the life membership certificate in honour of her services to the organisation.
“She has been good to us … always approachable and willing to give us her advice for free when it was needed. She has allowed us to use her mailbox for our mail, and that helped us reduce our costs.” Jocelyn said she was “very honoured” to have been recognised with life membership. “When I think about all those years that have passed since I attended your first meeting … I could never have imagined then how I might be able to qualify for this organisation on my own merit. “I see many older people who feel they have become invisible in society, people who no longer work and have nothing on which to hang
their self-esteem. It is particularly difficult for those for whom national superannuation is their only income,” she said. “Housing continues to be a real issue, for both those owning their homes and having to meet costs such as rates and maintenance, and for renters who may feel they have little security of tenure. “It is really good to see organisations like this advocating for such people, acting as their voice. I am delighted to be part of such an organisation.” Jocelyn’s service to the community was also honoured earlier in the year, when she was presented with a Queen’s Service Medal at Government House in Wellington on September 24.

This Christmas Cambridge Primary School is helping Waikato women in need by supporting the “It’s in the Bag” organisation – collecting handbags filled with essentials such as shampoo, hairbrushes, toothpaste and “luxury” items like perfume and lipstick. The bags will go directly to the Women’s Refuge in time for Christmas. “I’ve been blown away by the generous support from our families,” said Anni Roberts, coordinator of the project at Cambridge Primary School. “Over the past two weeks the small pile of handbags has grown to 27. They’re filled with goodies too… It’s so awesome to see.”

Paddlers push for national selection By Sophie Iremonger Nearly a thousand paddlers raced across Lake Karapiro over the weekend competing in the 2018 Te Puku O Te Ika Regional Sprint Championships – the Waikato waka ama sprint championships. Of the 914 competitors, ranging from intermediate school age to masters paddlers in their 70s, 127 earned the right to represent the region at the National Sprint event, which will be held at the same venue in January. “We were fortunate to have some stunning weather
and also some excellent volunteer support which was provided from our member clubs,” regatta coordinator Rebecca Boyce said. Of the 25 waka ama, dragon boat and outrigger canoe clubs around the region, 18 competed in the event, including the nearest local waka ama club, Hamilton’s Te Toki Voyaging Trust, which had the strongest showing at the event with 101 paddlers. Karapiro has hosted the regional event for the past four years, with operations running smoothly each year. “Most of that can be attributed to everyone

Over 1700 teams will compete at the 30th annual National Waka Ama Sprint Champs at Karapiro over January 14 – 19, competing across 10 age divisions from 5 to 80 years old. In following last year’s numbers, an estimated 10,000 spectators are expected to attend throughout the week-long event.
The Hei Matau Paddlers saw the second-largest turn out in the competition with 78 entries, including the J16 women’s W1 500m team.

Council offering birds eye view of Cycle Classic Waipā District Council has announced a special competition for a local cycling fan to view January’s New Zealand Cycle Classic from the sky. As part of the international event – the only UCI 2.2 accredited tour staged in the country, being held in and around Cambridge – Council is offering the champion supporters prize pack in addition to organising a range of activities and spot prizes for fans throughout the week-long event running January 20 – 27. The big prize includes a 30-minute scenic helicopter ride for four people, reserved viewing spots at the finish line, a VIP tent for up to 12 people at
the closing party and complimentary food and drinks throughout the day on Sunday 27 January – the designated date for the big “Party in the Park” running 12.30pm-5pm at Victoria Square, finishing up the final leg of the race. “We’re looking forward to welcoming the Three Peaks RIDE New Zealand’s Cycling Festival and Grassroots Trust New Zealand Cycle Classic to Waipā and encourage the community to get along to some of the races and other events planned during the week,” Waipā mayor Jim Mylchreest said. The competition to win the big prize pack, including the helicopter ride, will be run via Council’s Facebook page.

Waikato Water Polo Club has moved its main playing venue from Waterworld in Hamilton to a new, local venue: St Peters School in Cambridge. After the Hamilton site closed down for refurbishment work, the club had to find alternative deep and shallow water venues to ensure its 280 water polo players could continue to train – an important aspects for the club’s representative teams preparing for upcoming tournaments, including the biennial Pan Pacific Youth Water Polo Festival in Auckland in July. Adding salt to the wounds was the struggle to find a suitable venue that could store its existing three-metre-wide aluminium goals. “Carting the goals back and forth for every training and competition day would be time consuming and was going to require a trailer,” said club president Mark Harvey. “Fortunately, the club found an ideal solution in the purchase of high-quality inflatable Water Polo Packagoals.” The new goals provided by Packaworld International have enabled the club to move to its new venue, now able to set up and pack down faster. Harvey believes water polo is a fast-growing sport in New Zealand. To find out more about getting involved in water polo at the local venue, visit the Waikato Waterpolo Facebook page or email chairperson@waikatowaterpolo.co.nz.

Takahe spotted, and doing well By Sophie Iremonger
Cameras in hand, unsure of what we might see, a Cambridge News team ventured into Sanctuary Mountain’s wetland enclosure last week in hopes of spotting their new takahe chicks. Born in late October, the two chicks have been in a protective lockdown for the past few weeks, meaning no guided tours or public access of any kind, with just one Sanctuary Mountain volunteer venturing into the enclosure to provide supplementary food three times a week. It was a safeguard to ensure their dad Ngutu Whero, mum Nancy and older sister Jan could care for the chicks in peace, without the chance of abandoning their nest at the thought of danger. Now with the chicks a little older, even venturing out from the nest themselves, we jumped at the chance to finally get inside the enclosure and see them for
ourselves. Accompanied by lead guide Tali Jellyman, we ventured into the wetland enclosure atop Maungatautari Mountain on Friday last week, with the first sunshine in several days increasing our chances of seeing them out and about. But after about half an hour of quietly trekking through their enclosure we began to doubt we would see them, until we heard the distinctive “thud” sound their parents make when potential threats approach. Senses heightened, trying to figure our where the sound was coming from. We peered up through the trees onto a hill above us and spotted the distinct red beak of one of the takahe adults, peering at us through the long grass. We quickly pulled out our cameras and snapped pictures from where we stood of the adult bird, unable to venture any closer and disturb them. Soon the
During our tour of the Tuatarium we spotted three Tuatara over 30 years old, sitting right on the side of the track.
After a 30-day public ban on the Sanctuary Mountain wetland was lifted recently, in place to protect its newest arrivals, we ventured inside to capture photos of the rare new takahe chicks hatched over Labour weekend.
thudding sounds stopped – they could sense we weren’t a threat – and finally, with much internal excitement on our part, the cute and curious chicks popped out through the grass and were able to capture them on film. Lead guide Tali noted how their feathers had changed from black to now a slight greyish colour – on their way to the iconic blue colour of their parents – and they had grown in size too. She said it was quite a rarity for the endangered birds to produce two surviving young. “It’s the most ideal scenario to have two chicks survive, this is the first time I’ve seen it,” she said, explaining that the 30day lock down was part of the protocol they follow outlined by the Takahe Recovery Group. “It’s all about giving them the space to do what they need to
do,” she said. Record tuatara on maunga Unlike the southern enclosure on Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, which is open to the public, visiting the three-hectare wetland enclosure is only available through bookings with a tour guide, which will usually take place at 1pm. During the wetland tour visitors can check out the Tuatarium area, where 20 tuataras were released in 2012 from Stephens Island in the Malborough Sounds. Aged around 30 to 40 years old, they’re about the size of a person’s forearm, and quite visible to view right on the side of the walk way. This year has seen record sighting of juveniles too, a promising prospect for the ecological island – conserving native species right in our own backyard.

Champagne welcome for new boats
Book marks 30 years of writing
Two new rowing boats for Cambridge High School Rowing have been “Christened” under their new names, a double boat named Cook, acknowledging the contributions of Cambridge High School rowing, Dean Cook, and a single boat named Cambridge Real Estate Norfolk Downs Development. Currently in his fifth year on the committee and first year as Chairperson, Dean Cook of Cambridge High School Rowing, started on the committee many years ago as the “assets man” responsible for boat repairs and equipment maintenance. “This is a vital role that ensures we have boats, oars, coach boats etc all ready to use,” CHS Rowing Teacher in Charge Sarah Monkley said. “Cookie has also been known to step in and help coach on the occasion.” The new single boat earned its name thanks to sponsorship from Cambridge Real Estate. “CHS Rowing owe a huge thank you to Graham Bann and David Soar,” said Monkley. “This is a wonderful contribution to CHS Rowing and we all very much appreciate their generosity and support.” The traditional champagne toast marked the official David Soar and Graham Ban from Cambridge Real Estate officially naming the new single boat. induction of the two new boats on the CHS rowing team.
Max entries for ladies tournament
By Ray Rainsford, Cambridge Central Bowling Club
They came from all around the North Island to play in the Central Bowling Club’s “Sistaz” tournament for lady bowlers last Thursday and Friday, in what is acknowledged as a Women’s Premier event by lawn bowlers. The tournament attracted a maximum entry of 32 teams – that is 128 bowlers from Tauranga, Katikati, Ohope, Matamata, Rotorua, Thames, Taradale, Te Kuiti, Te Awamutu and Cambridge playing fours. Despite the cold and wet weather on Thursday, the tournament got underway in good spirit with conditions underfoot making consistent bowling difficult, and sadly by 2pm
play was abandoned for the day, due to heavy rain which flooded the grass green. Thankfully, on Friday morning we woke to blue skies and sunshine, and full of hope to give our visitors a great day’s bowls and good competition, and of course to share in our renowned Cambridge hospitality. All games were able to be completed during the day and the winners found. First place went to a combined Tauranga/ Katikati team skipped by Marilyn Constantine. This team played consistently well on the final day, after being second on the leader board when play was abandoned on Thursday. Second were the Ohope
ladies skipped by Martie Sisson and third were Te Kuiti, skipped by well-known bowler and administrator Wendy Weinberg. This was a wonderful tournament enjoyed by all the players, and the
comments at the end were, “Great organisation, super prizes and well catered”. Thanks to all our sponsors, organising committee and club members who made this journey such a grand occasion.

MORTGAGE MATTERS
Why use a Mortgage Broker? By Gavin Lynch – Yes Mortgages In the present loan market, most lenders are changing their criteria in regards to what, how much and to whom they lend. This makes it even more important to use a mortgage broker so you know you are getting the right mortgage and right lender to suit your needs. I believe every client has a unique borrowing scenario and time needs to be taken with the client to understand and analyse this, so a correct lending plan and structure can be put in place to achieve goals. In this column, I want to explain briefly the role of the mortgage broker and what I can offer. The key role of the mortgage broker is to make the whole loan process easier for you, the client. This is possible because: I can look at all the lending options. I deal with more than 25 different lenders and work to find the best lender to suit your unique situation. • I can do all the ‘leg work’ with the lenders. • This saves you time and avoids pitfalls in getting a loan approved. • I can negotiate rates, fees, and legal contributions with certain lenders to obtain the best deal for the client. • I can meet at a convenient time and place for the client. • This can be in the home or workplace and after hours if need be. • I can advise on the best loan structure to suit the client’s need. And best of all using a broker is a free service in most cases. Now that has to be worth thinking about! If your looking for a mortgage, please give me a call and I can help you though the whole process.

Dirt bike teammates tackle road-racing scene By Andy McGechan (abridged)
guys. They obviously don’t mind a little variation, which is why they both race motocross, enduro events and cross-country events too.” The riders now head to Manfeild (on the outskirts of Feilding) for round two of the Suzuki Series this coming weekend. The series wraps up with the riders tackling the world-famous Cemetery Circuit in Whanganui on Boxing Day.
Cambridge’s Seton Head and his Bay of Plenty teammate Brad Groombridge both love the power of their Suzuki dirt bikes, but they each discovered there was a whole new level of bravery required when they made their road-racing debuts at the weekend. With backing from Suzuki New Zealand, the two Kea Trailers Race Team dirt bike riders rolled into the pits of the threeround Suzuki Series at Taupo’s Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park with just one aim in mind, to learn as much as they could about racing on tarmac. The GIXXER Cup class is a relatively new competition, hatched last year, and reserved for riders aged between 14 and 21 and all on board identical 150cc Suzuki GSX150F model bikes, but 17-year-old Seton Head was soon on the pace, settling in the end for 10th overall in the 17-rider field. Head’s father, Tony, owner of the innovative Kea Trailers NZ Ltd company, said the weekend’s experience was a real eye-opener. “It was a really good Cambridge’s Seton Head (Kea Trailers Suzuki GSX150F), quick to adapt to racing on tarmac. Ross Salvages podium finish in BNT V8s Nick Ross has finished round two of the BNT V8s Championship at Pukekohe over the weekend in third place overall. He went into the weekend as the Championship leader with a narrow-points lead over Australian driver Jack Smith, qualifying his Total Lubricants Nissan Altima in second place just 0.133 of a second behind his rival Smith. Though happy with the qualifying effort, Ross said the result could have been better if it had not been for an engine issue that developed in the car. “To qualify in second place was a good result considering the car developed a misfire with a few minutes to go, which may have cost us a shot at going a bit quicker,” said Ross. Having fixed the misfire issue before the first race, the Total Lubricants Nissan Altima then developed a cam sensor issue, slowing his race pace. Battling with a wounded car, the Cambridge driver’s
race went from bad to worse when he had contact with Jack Smith at the tight hairpin corner of the Pukekohe circuit. Ross continued on and salvaged a fifth place finish, securing a valuable 49 points for his Championship campaign. An uneventful second race of the weekend saw Ross finish back on the podium in third place securing a further 60 points for his Championship total. Starting the final race of the weekend on the front row, where the top four cars were reversed, Ross says he had to capitalise on the starting position and ensure he got a good getaway. Holding the lead of the final race from start to finish, Ross ended his weekend on a high taking the win and the maximum 75 points. Ross now sits in second place in the Championship with 401 points, 25 points behind Jack Smith.

Junior rowers secure school’s tenth victory
St Peter’s School’s junior rowers have claimed the Muudi Cup for the tenth year in a row. The annual regatta is held between St Peter’s, Hauraki Plains College and Takapuna Grammar on the very muddy and tidal Piako River, competing against each other on the erg for 20 minutes, then on the water in doubles, quads and this
year, eights. Despite close racing throughout the day St Peter’s secured the win with 74 points over Takapuna with 60 and Hauraki with 49. It was a fantastic effort especially considering the Year 9 rowers were doing doubles for the first time, with some rather erratic steering by one boys double.
Lacrosse team wins again Our local lacrosse lads have beat the Hamilton Devils once again. The Leamington Rugby Sports Club’s men’s lacrosse team went up against the Hamiltonian team last week for the second time this season, securing the game in the last five minutes for a 10-8 finish. Making their win all the more memorable was one of the most experienced attackmen in New Zealand lacrosse, Eric
Messick, who played on the Devils team alongside a “very athletic midfield line-up” as described by Leamington coach Anthony Warrington. Prospects looked even tougher as they headed into the game with the team’s two-in-one goalie and captain off sick. “The game was going to be a tough one,” coach Warrington said. goal of the game, closely followed by goals from the Devils’ Eric Messick and Zane Steffert. It went back and forth in a similar fashion all the way to the last five minutes, where both teams sat at 8 all. “Lucas Thom scored the tie-breaker with a great dodge, weaving through the defence,” Warrington explained. “Kyle Parker then redeemed himself of the three penalties he gave earlier in the game with a rocket of a shot right into the top-corner of the goal shortly before the final whistle.” “Our man of the match was Ethan Joblin, who played an all-around awesome game, playing solid man-to-man defence all game and creating countless goal scoring opportunities for us in offence.”

Superstars crowned at Young Horse Champs
The Cambridge High School U15 Girls team finished 14th in their division out of 24 teams.
Tough battles at Sevens
Four Cambridge teams competed in the National Condor Sevens recently, where their “pride and determination” as described by one coach earned the Cambridge High School U15 Girls team a final 14th place out of 24 teams. The school’s under 19 boys team also made it through several rounds to finish up in the final for the Male Consolation Shield, losing to Westlake Boys High. “All three teams did a fantastic job of representing Cambridge High School with pride and determination,” said Carl Hudson, Teacher in Charge of sevens rugby at Cambridge High School, who also coached the school’s under 19 girls team at the fourday tournament. 110 teams competed over November 30 - December 3 at Sacred Heart College in Auckland, having secured
their place at the tournament through regional sevens events. An under 19 boys team from St Peter’s School also competed, starting on a good note with victory over Napier Boys High. In their next round they lost to New Plymouth, before bouncing back to beat Westlake Boys. In the plate quarter final on Day 2 they faced Wesley College, wearing them down to win a place in the plate semi-finals, where they lost against to Hastings Boys. “The team showed good character,” said Sean Hohneck, Director of Rugby at St Peter’s. “Cam Roigard and Paula Mahe were St Peter’s best for the weekend, both were excellent on attack and resilience, and committed on defence. Dawson Smith stood out as a Year 10 and will no doubt make an impression in years to come.”
Two Cambridge people took home titles in the East Coast Performance Horses National Young Horse Show held in Hastings over the weekend – the biggest showcase of New Zealand’s young showjumping talent which drew a record-480 entries. Cambridge’s Sam Peters won the Matthews Hanoverians/Gemco Seven-Year-Old Championship, and Jaime Campbell, who rides out of Takapoto Estate in Karapiro, was named the leading rider of the show. “This is our biggest win together,” said Peters, who rode her self-produced horse Cadillac NZPH. “It has been a pretty stressful three days but he just ate it. You have to win your way through those three days with a clean slate.” As it was, they were the only combination to finish with a clean slate. “I think he is an absolute superstar. It was definitely my goal to win this – I knew we could if I kept it all together. Anything can happen. He just felt amazing today.” Sam bought him on the recommendation of horseman Tui Teka and former NZPH rider Daniel Blundell. “It was just meant to be. I had lost my grand prix horse and was looking for a young horse. Tui and Daniel said Cadillac was one of the best at NZPH,” said Sam. “He is just outstanding. He is quite arrogant and knows how good he is but is still soft and beautiful to deal with. He is such a keen learner, you can teach him whatever you want.” In the East Coast Performance Horses/NZ Hanoverian Society Five-Year-Old Championship, won by Leeston’s Rose Alfeld, Cambridge rider Jaime Campbell and Casanova Xtreme were out first ahead of a 47-strong field, laying the challenge with a fast clear in 39.65 seconds. Next out was another Cambridge rider, Jeremy Whale and Fleur de la Cour who dropped two in their 38.65 second effort. “I knew I had to go clear and beat Jaime – which was hard enough! I got an inside turn early so just had to maintain it but I think she was probably quicker at the end than me,” Alfeld said.

FRIDAY DECEMBER 14, 2018
with Jan Bilton
Merry Meat Treats We’re having chicken for Christmas dinner. I have a shallow roasting pan large enough to cook three chickens side-by-side which together take considerably less cooking than a turkey. And by the time I’ve dressed them with fresh cranberry sauce, a pistachio stuffing and prunes wrapped in bacon, they’ll be looking a lot like turkeys. Any leftovers will be merrily gobbled up by the family on Boxing Day. I also have a small cooked ham that — once peeled — will be brushed with thick plum sauce then sprinkled liberally with a combo of black and white sesame seeds plus sunflower and pumpkin seeds. There’s no need to heat the ham to apply this topping — unless of course you want to serve it hot. In this case, before the seeds are added, bake the ham at 160°C for 10 minutes per 500grams then garnish. Vegetarian offerings are a collection of hearty salads and sides, including my favourite potato salad using the white-fleshed, waxy, flavour-filled Heather potatoes available from Catos at our local Farmers’ market. Chunks of pumpkin, kumara and parsnip will be roasted in olive oil, rosemary and thyme then presented sprinkled with smoked paprika. And for beef, there’s nothing like a truly tasty sauté of mushrooms with lots of garlic, and a dash each of sesame oil and vegemite.
Cranberry Chicken
CURRIED CRUSTED LAMB LEG Supermarkets are now selling lamb legs cut in half horizontally rather than vertically. This makes them attractive and affordable for a celebration for four. 1kg half lamb leg 3/4 cup panko breadcrumbs 2 tablespoons rice bran oil 1-2 teaspoons curry powder 1/2 teaspoon each: chopped rosemary, thyme 1 clove garlic, crushed Pat the lamb dry and lightly score the fat. Combine the remaining ingredients and pat over the top pushing in firmly. Chill for 10 minutes to set. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place the lamb on a rack in a roasting pan. Roast for 1 hour. Remove from the oven, cover with foil and stand for 10 minutes before carving. Serves 4.
Curried Crusted Lamb
CRANBERRY CHICKEN A ‘mock’ turkey. Cooking two or three chickens at once allows for leftovers next day. Stuffing: 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large shallot, diced 3/4 cup cooked fresh breadcrumbs or long grain rice 1/2 cup each: craisins, pistachio nuts, chopped 1 small egg, lightly beaten Chicken: 1.5kg chicken 1 tablespoon olive oil salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Heat the oil and sauté the shallot on medium, until softened. Combine with the breadcrumbs or rice, craisins, pistachios and egg. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Lightly oil a roasting pan. Pat the chicken dry inside and out. Brush with oil and season. Stuff the chicken cavity and truss or tie the bird with string. Place the chicken, breast-side up, in the pan. Roast for about 1 hour 15 minutes, until cooked. Cover with foil and stand for 10 minutes before carving. Great served with Five-spice Cranberry Sauce. Serves 4-6.
FIVE-SPICE CRANBERRY SAUCE Place 500g frozen cranberries in a saucepan with a 1/4 cup of orange juice, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and a 1/4 teaspoon of Chinese Five-spice. Bring to the boil, stirring until the berries start to split. Cool then cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Serves 6-8.

ROAST BEEF WITH A BEETROOT & RED WINE SAUCE 1 fillet of beef, about 1.25 kg Marinade: 1/2 cup red wine 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 3 cloves garlic, crushed 3 tablespoons olive oil Beetroot Sauce: 1/2 cup each: red wine, beef jus or good beef stock 1 large cooked beetroot, peeled and cut into 2cm cubes 2-3 tablespoons red wine vinegar Place the beef fillet in a plastic bag. Whisk together the marinade ingredients. Pour into the plastic bag. Move the beef around so it is well coated. Refrigerate for several hours or overnight, turning the beef occasionally. Remove the beef from the marinade and pat dry. Reserve the marinade. Place under a grill or over medium barbecue heat and cook for about 16 minutes turning often so it cooks evenly. Cover and stand for 5 minutes in a warm place before slicing. To make the beetroot sauce, combine all the ingredients and bring to a simmer. Add the strained marinade and simmer until slightly thickened. Serves 6.
The thought of moving house overwhelming? The Move Managers office will be closed from 5:00p.m. on Friday December 21st and will re-open on Monday January 7th 2019. Wishing you a very Happy Christmas And a safe New Year

CREED II Years after Adonis Creed made a name for himself under Rocky Balboa's mentorship, the young boxer becomes the Heavyweight Champion of the World. Life is good with that victory and his marriage to Bianca, until trouble comes to Philadelphia when Ivan Drago, the Russian boxer who killed Adonis' father, Apollo, arrives with his son, Viktor, to challenge Adonis. Adonis accepts the challenge and pays the price in a punishing bout he wins only by a technicality. A fast paced roller-coaster of emotions that is so freaking good and so enjoyable. Such a powerful sequel about putting family first is definitely a must watch.

Sailing honour for Cambridge old boy
FRIDAY DECEMBER 14, 2018
Sailor Brad Collins, once of Cambridge High School, has been honoured at the annual Volvo Yachting Excellence Awards. Judges for Yachting New Zealand’s awards event, held in Auckland last month, could not separate two successful crews who between them broke a 44-year drought and helped Dongfeng Race Team win the closest Volvo Ocean Race in history. So, both were named Orbit World Travel Sailors of the Year at the awards evening in Auckland. Brad Collins, David McDiarmid and Matthew Steven became the first New Zealand team to get their hands on the JJ Giltinan Trophy in 44 years when they triumphed by one point over another New Zealand crew, Maersk Line. Daryl Wislang and Stu Bannatyne played key roles in Dongfeng’s win in Sydney in March. It was Wislang’s second victory in the round the world race and Bannatyne’s fourth, making him the most successful sailor in Volvo Ocean Race history. The event is considered the world championships of 18-foot skiff racing. All five sailors were presented with the Sir Bernard Fergusson Trophy at the awards evening last month. “It was huge surprise and honor to win the award,” Brad Collins, David McDiarmid and Matthew Steven became the first New Zealand team to get their hands on the JJ Giltinan Trophy in March this year. Photo - Frank Quealey. said Collins. “We don’t sail to win awards like this; however, it’s awesome to receive recognition for our hard work over the last three years.” He added that it was “amazing” to be recognized alongside Stu Bannatyne and Daryl Wislang, whom he described as “yachting legends”. But Collins proved to be quite the legend himself, securing the iconic regatta win after suffering a serious ankle injury before the start of the first race. “It almost finished my regatta before it even began,” he said. The victory was the team’s third attempt to win the JJ Giltinan Trophy, coming second by one point in their first attempt and finishing third the second time after they were controversially involved in a protest with one of the Australian boats. “So to finish the regatta on top this year was a huge relief and a massive accomplishment. “It was a surreal feeling to sail through the finish line in the last race.” Collins and his team plan to “have a crack” at defending their title next year in Sydney Harbour. “We are currently preparing with the rest of the NZ team for the JJ Gilitinan Regatta and it’s shaping up to be a big year,” he said. “The Aussies are not pleased that we took the trophy off them, and this has brought a few very talented Aussie crews out of the woodwork.” Brad Collins, David McDiarmid and Matthew Steven with their NZ team manager.
