First 2019 baby… a thrill for big sister Noah

Sometimes all you can do is smile when you find out you’re a big sister! Little Noah Wilson beams with delight as she enjoys a cuddle with her wriggly new baby brother Cole just three days after his New Year’s Day arrival at Waikato Hospital. Cole is Cambridge’s first 2019 baby, born just a few days earlier than due date to parents Shan Kapa and Ferlyn Wilson. Helping welcome him at 3.31am on January 1 was Natasha Ziegler of Cambridge Midwives.

Love your smile.

Cat attack – but this bird is all white Albino chick gets a second chance.

An albino sparrow has beaten the odds to find sanctuary with Cambridge Bird Rescue. The chick escaped the jaws of a cat, whose owner handed it over to the rescue centre, based at the Huntington Stables Retreat on Maungakawa Rd, Leamington. White sparrows have been in the news before in the Waikato – Fairfax media reported one in 2010 after North Waikato amateur photographer Doug Crowther snapped a series of pictures of the bird.

Maybe the time has come for the present Government to review the New Zealand legal system. Home detention seems to be a punishment that judges are meting out more and more frequently. Does home detention mean that because a criminal does not have to go to prison, therefore the Government saves money? How are the police able to keep control of home detention detainees to prevent them leaving their properties at inappropriate times? If anyone assaults a member of the police force, the punishment should be automatic jail time. Members of the public rely on the police force to keep them safe, and the police should always be treated with respect. There are times when it seems that those who commit crimes have more rights than the victims. Comments from members of the public would be appreciated. Michael Cole

Untidy Cambridge

I was disgusted to see how untidy our town looked over the Christmas holidays. Lawns not mown, weeds not sprayed (for a long time) around bins and seating in town, lower limbs of tree not trimmed. Come on councillors – get off your comfy chairs and out of your nice cars and go walk about town and see what needs doing. Not a good impression for visitors coming to Cambridge. C Lee

One was also spotted around the grounds of St Peter’s Anglican church in Kaikoura and another in Tuakau in 2015. Not all white sparrows are albino, some are leucistic – they have partial loss of pigmentation. The one in Cambridge, though, is albino. It will remain at the centre, as its chances of survival in the wild are limited. The rescue centre, which cares for injured birds, is in the process of raising money to build a walk-through aviary at the Huntington Stables Retreat. Its latest addition arrived on Tuesday and while it was shunned by fellow sparrows at the centre, it was in apparent good health the following day. Animal lover Robyn Chappell has been taking injured and orphaned birds in at the retreat since moving there five years ago. Her aim is to release them, where possible, as quickly as they recover. She has a long background in animal care – and even tells of raising a joey while in Australia. But the collection of recovering sparrows, ducklings, finches, doves and mynas – plus the occasional hawk, tui, pheasant and partridge – is outgrowing the facilities available, and she has set up a givealittle page in the hope of

raising funds to build the walk-through aviary. You’ll find the page at https:// givealittle.co.nz/cause/bird-rescuecambridge and can also find Bird Rescue on Facebook. Bird rescue Cambridge accepts most birds – but draws the line at magpies and pukeko because of they kill other birds, pigeons – because they are a pest – and adult ducks, because the facilities are not appropriate from them.

This young sparrow will be kept safe and sound.

Croquet club keeps going despite hitch The Cambridge Croquet Club will go on with its planned programme despite Cambridge Raceway’s application for a special liquor license for the area being refused by the Waipa Council District Licensing Committee. The Cambridge Croquet Club was created to provide the Cambridge community with a free immersive and family inclusive entertainment space to enjoy during the summer months. “Cambridge Raceway is proud to have been a part of Cambridge for 100 years and creating positive entertainment options to give back to the community is one of our top priorities as an organisation,” said CEO Dave Branch. “We’re bitterly disappointed that the council have rejected our special licence request, but we’re not letting it affect a

project that we’ve put so much time and effort into creating. “In fact, we’re making the Cambridge Croquet Club even bigger, with the addition of two extra croquet pitches and a dedicated bar space overlooking the lawns which is within our current liquor licence area.” He said that while the croquet pitches are the centrepiece, people were welcome to come along and try their hand at the game or simply soak up the atmosphere over summer. “As with all of the summer race meetings at Cambridge Raceway, there is absolutely no cost to come and have a game of Croquet or to take part in any of the other scheduled events,” he said. New year honour for Florence

After years of selfless service to others, Cambridge’s Florence Shearman QSM finally gets to put letters after her name. By Viv Posselt Florence was listed among the New Year Honours 2019 recipients, having been awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for services to seniors. She admits to having been “overwhelmed” when notified of the award and says that while it is a great honour to be recognised for her years of service, none of it has been done with that in mind. “At the end of the day, I’m just a people person who likes to help in the community. It’s all God’s work really.” The voluntary work for which Florence is known locally – aiding the elderly and organising events such as the annual Global Walk for Seniors - is just the tip of the iceberg. She has done much more for different communities through the years, and already has a police medal for service. Born in Palmerston North, Florence graduated as a nurse in Auckland, then worked in Sydney before returning to New Zealand in the late 1960s. Soon after coming home, her mother sent her to Wellington to meet her brother, who was himself returning from Australia. “But his arrival was delayed, and

I was running out of money, so my mother told me to get a job down there.” That delay placed the young nurse at the centre of events as the Wahine disaster unfolded in April 1968 - she helped survivors as they were brought into Wellington’s railway station. It was an event that was to play a large part in shaping her future, and one that saw her return to the capital last year to join in the 50th commemorations of the tragedy. “After the Wahine I wanted to change the sort of work I was doing,” she explained. “I became a hospital chaplain, then an industrial chaplain and a pastoral counsellor, representing seven different denominations. My family moved to the Waikato, and I worked for the New Zealand Dairy Packers, and then for years with the Central Waikato Electric Power Board.” Part of her training was learning to do CPR and pole-top rescues, while visiting the mines was a regular part of the job. “It gave me the opportunity to use my nursing background … I dealt with everything from rape cases and domestic violence, redundancy and suicide, to alcohol and drug abuse.” She handled family emergencies, Florence Shearman QSM, holding up congratulatory letters from the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and New Zealand’s Governor-General, Dame Patsy Reddy.

A look back at Florence Shearman in her role as industrial chaplain, pictured in training in Hamilton as she comes to the rescue of “electrocuted” lineman, John Hobbs. Picture RHYS PALMER

conducted weddings and funerals, even played cricket with the workers, all the while working closely with police and volunteering where she could. Florence gave up her industrial chaplaincy work when she moved to Whangamata in the 1990s. Before long, she was back working alongside police there and volunteering in the community, running holiday beach races and library readings for kids, organising ‘March into Spring’ parades for older folk, doing fundraising for housing and more. Twelve years ago, she moved to Cambridge, taking on a volunteer role at the district courts in Hamilton and continuing her association with local police. She has spent countless volunteer hours helping those in need, mostly seniors … to lighten her load, she goes off to the local stables to spend time with the horses. “We’ve always been involved with

horses. There have been seven jockeys in our family over the years … it doesn’t matter what activity they’ve involved with, I just love spending time with horses.” Florence’s QSM has already elicited congratulatory calls from supportive family and friends. Few would have been prouder than her family ancestor, RC Shearman, an Irishman Florence says was the first police commissioner appointed in New Zealand. Her citation noted her eight-year status as Volunteer Community Coordinator for the Office of Senior Citizens and her leadership in driving seniors’ events in Coromandel and Thames Valley, and Cambridge. It acknowledged her involvement with police and the courts and recognised her leadership in the campaign to establish a local health shuttle service, which led to the inception of the St John Health Shuttle.

On track for 100 years A century of racing in Cambridge will be celebrated. Cambridge Raceway will go back to the 1920s tonight. The club’s Friday twilight meeting, starting at 5pm, will take on a Great Gatsby and Peaky Blinders theme to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The meeting is traditionally the biggest of the year for the Leamington raceway Established in 1919, the club is the epicentre of racing in the region, and its facilities have been widely utilised, notably as a training camp for the military during World War II.

promotions and the race night. The club is also looking forward to 2020 when it will again host the Harness Jewels, the country’s biggest harness race day, which alternates between the North and South Island. Tonight will also offer an impressive card of racing, including the Gr.2 McMillian Equine Feeds Waikato Flying Mile (1609m) and the Gr.3 Harcourts (Te Awamutu) Cambridge Trotters Flying Stakes (1700m).

Both races have been moved to the centenary meeting and the clubs says the fields attracted indicate the decision has already paid dividends. Entry to the Taylor St raceway for the meeting is free. The meeting – one of 25 to be hosted by the WaikatoBay of Plenty Harness Racing Club in the 2018-19 season, and the second of the year at Cambridge - will feature 10 races and some of the county’s leading racehorses, drivers and trainers.

“We’re not only celebrating racing at Cambridge but also the past 100 years of the Cambridge township and we’re involving the Cambridge Community in the promotions and the race night.

- Cambridge Raceway chief executive Dave Branch.

“We want to make a really big night of the centenary meeting,” Cambridge Raceway chief executive Dave Branch said. “It’s all going to be dress-up, the whole place will be decked out in a 1920’s theme. “We want to create a great atmosphere and pack the grass verge out along the front of the grandstand with hospitality. The Skyline Lounge will also be open, the Alf Walsh Lounge will take on a speakeasy vibe for the night and we will also have our Colts and Fillies Club to entertain the children. “We’re not only celebrating racing at Cambridge but also the past 100 years of the Cambridge township and we’re involving the Cambridge community in the

Successful six months for Miff and the team By Viv Posselt Six months in and squaring up to her first summer as Destination Cambridge CEO, Michelle ‘Miff’ Macdiarmid is all smiles. She took over the helm at the organisation’s local i-SITE base in July, promising to ring in changes that would give Cambridge an edge as a destination town. An early pitch was to enhance digital and social media space, to make Cambridge more visible and secure future growth. By all accounts, she’s well on her way to achieving that. Soon after her first Cambridge Christmas Parade in early December – one that defeated fickle weather and featured 44 floats plus several new attractions - Miff talked about the progress being made. “That [the parade] took some organisation, especially as the weather was looking suspect,” she said, “but it was a great success in the end, mostly down to the efforts of parade coordinator Vicki Ewing. We’ve had really good feedback … people were impressed with the variety and we had great interest in the Evolution bike giveaway and treasure hunt.” Months before the parade, there were already signs that Destination Cambridge was

upping its game. Figures released late last year revealed growth across several areas of the operation, including accommodation revenue, website traffic, tours, bike hire and travel bookings. “When comparing July to November 2018 figures with those of the previous year, we recorded steady local

accommodation bookings and 30 percent growth in New Zealand bookings, which is encouraging, especially because we had the Lions Tour during the previous year,” she pointed out. “Another significant increase is in our website traffic. It’s going through the roof, with our November figures 63

percent up on the previous November. That’s fantastic. It is mainly New Zealand traffic, with our biggest market being Auckland.” Improving online information and boosting social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram is something Miff she said was essential if the organisation was to succeed

in promoting Cambridge as a destination, rather than simply providing information to locals. “We only started Instagram in September, and it’s going well. It’s certainly an area we can expand on.” Streamlining information and improving online navigation has also seen more accommodation providers using the upgraded system for bookings. It makes for a more efficient booking system, she said, and speeds up processes. “Once we get our social media into great shape, we will try and extend our reach to new national and international markets.” The addition of several new tours, as well as bringing in e-bikes for hire to add to the standard bike option, has seen a boost in figures around both. “The tours are doing really well,” Miff said, “and we’re 55 percent up on our travel bookings. Hobbiton tours alone are up 28 percent. I’d like to see us being used more by locals. This is a fantastic resource … there are so many opportunities for locals to enjoy what is on offer here. It is certainly not limited to out-of-town or international visitors. “We’re enjoying an increase in most of our activities … it’s certainly going in the right direction for Cambridge.”

Old steamroller as good as new The much-loved old steamroller in the kiddies play area of Leamington Domain is back in action, looking as good as new. The roller, minus its engine and other working parts, has been part of the domain

landscape since 1975 when it was retired by the then council’s roading team. Last year, Waipa District Council community facilities manager Bruce Airey said the roller needed to be removed for a while to get a $10,000 facelift, which included work on new steps and safety improvements, and a coat of paint. It was put back in place in time for the summer holidays.

Community effort for Christmas By Sophie Iremonger The Cambridge Community of Social Services (CCSS) made Christmas all the more merrier for 72 local families in the lead up to Christmas last month. The 50 CCSS volunteers, made up of the Salvation Army, local churches, social services and other Cambridge residents, set up a massive array of Christmas food parcels for families to collect in the week leading up to Christmas. Parents could choose from a range of toys to take home and wrap for their

children, and supermarket vouchers were supplied along with food bundles thanks to the Cambridge Lions and Rotary. “It’s a community effort, to spread some Christmas cheer,” said Shaun Baker, one of the main organisers, adding that the smiles on people’s faces when they collected the gifts made it all worthwhile. “It’s that sigh of relief, so that they can enjoy Christmas,” he smiled. The Cambridge Community of Social Services wished to thank all those who contributed towards the cause this year.

Vintage rides for Resthaven residents By Viv Posselt Cambridge Resthaven residents donned hats and sunblock last month for pre-Christmas rides around the neighbourhood in an array of vintage cars. The line-up of vehicles, owned and driven by Waikato branch members of the Veteran & Vintage Car Club, have become

a festive season highlight for Resthaven residents. Club committee member Andy Hammond said branch members were always keen to support the communityowned resthome and had offered those living there the pre-Christmas rides for the past four or five years. Club members spent a few hours with residents before heading off to enjoy their Christmas lunch.

Watching the vintage cars glide past were residents Betty Addenbrooke and Val Sariant.

New at Resthaven this year was Theo de Leeuw’s bright yellow 1912 Ford Model T, seen here with Theo behind the wheel, residents Shirley May Goodman and John Galbraith, and Resthaven staffer Neil Williams.

MORTGAGE MATTERS

Why use a Mortgage Broker? By Gavin Lynch – Yes Mortgages In the present loan market, most lenders are changing their criteria in regards to what, how much and to whom they lend. This makes it even more important to use a mortgage broker so you know you are getting the right mortgage and right lender to suit your needs. I believe every client has a unique borrowing scenario and time needs to be taken with the client to understand and analyse this, so a correct lending plan and structure can be put in place to achieve goals. In this column, I want to explain briefly the role of the mortgage broker and what I can offer. The key role of the mortgage broker is to make the whole loan process easier for you, the client. This is possible because: I can look at all the lending options. I deal with more than 25 different lenders and work to find the best lender to suit your unique situation. • I can do all the ‘leg work’ with the lenders. • This saves you time and avoids pitfalls in getting a loan approved. • I can negotiate rates, fees, and legal contributions with certain lenders to obtain the best deal for the client. • I can meet at a convenient time and place for the client. • This can be in the home or workplace and after hours if need be. • I can advise on the best loan structure to suit the client’s need. And best of all using a broker is a free service in most cases. Now that has to be worth thinking about! If your looking for a mortgage, please give me a call and I can help you though the whole process.

Double-crewing confirmed for Cambridge ambulance By Viv Posselt The days of single-crewed St John ambulances in Cambridge are over, making for better patient outcomes and a lowered risk to St John staffers and volunteers. The move comes as a roll-out of government funding to introduce full crewing around the country spreads through the regions. In May 2017, the then government announced an investment of almost $60 million over four years for 375 additional ambulance staff, essentially to ensure all emergency road ambulances were doublecrewed by the year 2021. Hugh Davison, St John New Zealand’s Waitomo territory manager, said several areas in his region had already seen doublecrewing implemented, with Cambridge coming on stream recently. “In my territory, it has gone through Otorohanga, Te Awamutu and now Cambridge, with Te Kuiti set to come on line in the new year.” The reason behind the move was three-fold, he explained. “One, it is better for patient care and outcomes if there is an officer

St John Waitomo territory manager, Hugh Davison.

in the back of the ambulance as the patient is being transported and two, there is a significantly better survival rate for cardiac arrest patients when an ambulance is fully-crewed. The third reason is for the improved safety of St John staff and volunteers who often enter highrisk environments to do their job. In addition, the fact there is reduced lifting when an ambulance is double-crewed means there is considerably WAIPA NETWORKS ARE less physical stress on YOUR LOCAL ELECTRICAL our staff … and we CONTRACTOR don’t have to call on bystanders to help We are here to help you with: move patients.” • Service Mains Hugh said the risk • Overhead and Underground Reticulation to first-responders has • Inspection Services increased in recent years. Ambulance staff Phone: and volunteers often go into situations where 07 827 4014 they face potential assault, verbal or physical abuse, he said, with drugs and alcohol www.waipanetworks.co.nz frequently playing a part.

ISSUES?

He said single-crews had been the norm until 2017 because of funding, and that St John staffers had been very lucky to be able to rely on volunteers to swell the numbers of those attending callouts. The involvement of volunteers in Cambridge has meant that 80 percent of local call-outs over the past year have carried double crews. “We are very grateful to have had the assistance of volunteers accompanying our paid staff in most situations, but the increasing demand continues to put pressure on them as well,” he said. “Cambridge is very lucky in that it has a very good and very dedicated group of well-qualified volunteers, and we’re still encouraging people to get involved. It is extremely valuable to have a third person in the ambulance when attending incidents. One of important roles they fulfil for us is enabling the double-crewing of an extra volunteer ambulance. They will remain as much in demand as ever.” Meanwhile, the increased government funding will bring Cambridge’s complement of paid full-time permanent St John staff up from four to eight.

BMX riders make development squad By Sophie Iremonger Three Cambridge locals have been selected to be part of the BMX New Zealand Youth Development Squad. Trials were held in December during the Central Regional Championships to determine who would make the newly established annual team, which will train together before travelling as a squad to Australia to compete. Cambridge BMX Club riders Leila Walker, Jack Greenough and Maui Morrison were selected on to the eight-person team, which includes the country’s best UCI 13 and 14 age groups. BMX New Zealand said the squad was intended as “a first step in preparing our younger riders to ride internationally at more senior levels by providing life experiences in travelling and competing independently.”

The team will work with coaches to develop their skills and experience before the trip across the ditch. The selection follows a successful bid by Cambridge riders at the USA Grand Nationals, where Leila Walker finished first in the Race of Champions, racing against male competitors too, as well as first in the 13 year old girls grand race and first in the 13 – 14 mixed race – up against boys and girls aged 13 and 14 years old. The 13 year old six time world champion said it was a pretty interesting experience, and was really happy with her result, taking home seven-foot trophies. Cambridge rider Tasman Wakelin also finished second in his Race of Champions and 7th in the 16 year old boys, and Greer Hall finished 7th in her final.

Trampers visit centre of North Island

By Carol Lennon, Cambridge Tramping Club

Fourteen Cambridge trampers enjoyed their last tramp of 2018 recently, taking a trip down to Mt Pureora last month. After turning right in Tokoroa on to SH32, we took a right turn onto Kakaho Rd, following a winding gravel road onto Link Rd, where the track starts

at the carpark on the northeast side of Mt Pureora. It goes gradually up with boardwalks and steps in place to make walking easier. Beautiful mature native forest was observed all the way, with good bird song too, and great examples of rimu, matai, miro, tawa and totara trees. The summit provides panoramic views

of Lake Taupo, Tongariro National Park, Mt Taranaki and the Kaimanawa Range, weather permitting. We had an exceptionally clear day with a full circle of breathtaking views. Once back at the car park we drove back a short distance and did the “Centre of the North Island” walk. This is a short 10 minute walk on flat track off Waimonoa Rd which leads to the geographical centre of the North Island, marked with a cairn and explanatory plaque. This was a great place for a group photo and we formed a circle and

did the “Hokey-tokey” which probably caused the bird song to cease! Back at the cars and another short drive, still on our way out, we turned in for the Rimu Walk at the Kakaho camping area. We only did part of this loop track which follows the Kakaho stream through dense forest with majestic rimu stands. At great day out, we’d thoroughly recommend it. Our first New Year tramp will be Sunday, January 20 at Tararewa Falls to Mumphrey’s Bay, Kawerau. Contact Prue for details on 07 827 5701.

Cambridge, especially cycling, really motivated me to work with him and the Brian Perry Charitable Trust. I spoke about my vision for the event, and he has been my main support to ensure for the first New Zealand Cycle Classic in Waipa. What’s important to me is its reputation around the world.”

This year’s Classic covers 700 km over five days. Sandoval has swapped the order of the circuits so the gut busting climb up Maungakawa Hill near Cambridge is on the day before the end of the tour. Tough hill climbs and fast sprint finishes will make for a race that is challenging for all riders and exciting for spectators. “I personally think that Stage Four - the Queen stage – will decide the 2019 Grassroots Trust New Zealand Cycle Classic winner as this stage will see riders climb French Pass and Maungakawa Hill twice. It will test the best. The Maungakawa climb may only be a bit over 3km in length, but it is steep.” Wairarapa has a similar hill and for the last number of years the guy who won the climb up Admiral Hill near Gladstone usually won the Classic, Sandoval said. It’s not a sport that comes easy. Even Olympic multiple gold winning rower Hamish Bond, who did his first Cycle Classic a couple of years ago, had a tough ride. “He’s a strong rider who did very well, but he needs more experience in races like this. The other riders wore him out in the cross winds – he wanted to be at the front the whole time and they used him to their advantage,” said Sandoval. Because most of the riders are at the top of their game and are always highly competitive, the Classic is always won by seconds, not minutes, he said. “One year there was two or three seconds separating first and second.”

Cycling is a sport based on blood, sweat, and tears. Jorge Sandoval, race director of the Grassroots Trust New Zealand Cycling Classic being held in Cambridge from January 23 to 27, was a teenager when he found his inspiration in the blood spilled by Belgian rider Eddy Merckx. “He was riding up a mountain in the Tour de France after a crash and he had blood all over his face. I decided I’d love to do this, but I didn’t even have a bike so I got one. It was just an ordinary bike. But when I came to New Zealand the first thing I did was get into a cycling club.” En route, Sandoval raced overseas, managed national teams and organised international women’s races, but 31 years ago, after complaining about a lack of a big event for men’s cycling, somebody threw down the challenge for him to do something about it. He took up the challenge, and as a result, this month’s event in Cambridge is the 32nd New Zealand Cycle Classic he has organised. Sandoval is a former political prisoner from Chile. He spoke no English when he fled the Pinochet regime and arrived in New Zealand in 1976 and has overcome numerous obstacles to create a cycling event that brings top teams from all around the world. In its 31-year history, the New Zealand Cycle Classic has developed a rich history involving some of the world’s cycling superstars, taking place until now in the Wellington/Wairarapa region. “When you look at the records of the

Chow &Tipple

For those who were fans of the Chow & Tipple food, beer & wine festival you’ll be pleased to know that Bluewaters will retain the food, beer & wine elements of that event. “Really Bluewaters is about taking the best elements of the Chow & Tipple and simply amplifying them, so the music side of things has really been ramped up, but we will still have a heap of great gourmet

food vendors and beverage providers like Gourmet Delicious, The Smoke Collective, Good George, Mills Reef etc except we’ve just tweaked it slightly to make it work better for everyone. Plus for those that prefer to pack a few goodies of their own, this year you’ll be able to bring a chilly bin with a packed picnic. We believe allowing both options will cater to a wide range of people.”

TO ROCK cambridge ON FEB 2ND! 80s Chart toppers MI-SEX to headline event

Mi-Sex hit the road for the first time since 1986, playing to sold out crowds across Australia Mi-Sex shot to international fame after their 1979 album release Graffiti Crimes, driven by their smash hit single Computer Games, which peaked at No.1 in Australia and top ten in NZ, Canada, Germany and South Africa and charted in the U.S. Another notable single from the album was But you Don’t Care. This album was followed by Space Race (#1 NZ), Shangaied & Where do they Go? Which featured many more hits including People, It Only Hurts When I’m Laughing, Falling In And Out and Blue Day. While Mi-Sex is thought of as an Australian act, it was New Zealand that gave birth to the band. A name and a sound that grew out of combining the collective creative energies of a cabaret singer Steve Gilpin, an art-rock Bass player Don Martin, a talented Southern Drummer Richard Hodgk-

inson, a frustrated guitarist/ song writer Kevin Stanton and a funk/dance keyboard player Murray Burns. These five connections quickly dissolved their pasts, as they re-invented themselves, passing into the new era of new wave/ electronic music and uniting fully as the sound that was to become Mi-Sex. Their debut album Straight Laddie saw them setting house records in NZ and they quickly set their sights on Australia. Within a short time, on the strength of their highly energised and semi-theatrical live shows, were soon one of Sydney’s top bands, they were signed by legendary A&R producer Peter Dawkins and the rest is history. Mi-Sex went number one in Australia culminating in what many consider their landmark performance at the Sydney Opera House in the “Concert of the Decade”.

In 1984 Mi-Sex semi-retired from touring to take a well-deserved break and seek solo ventures. Always remaining the very closest of friends they came back together in the late 80’s for two more Australian tours and in the summer of 1990 began writing fresh material when tragically Steve Gilpin was killed in a car accident, putting the band on an in-definite hiatus.

It’s only in the last few years that the band has reformed and begun blowing away crowds with the high energy and songs that captivated the millions all those years ago. The band are incredibly excited to play at the inaugural Bluewaters Music Festival in Cambridge on February 2 and are promising a highly entertaining show full of all their hits.

The band meet Robert Muldoon in 1983

Back to school preparation

How prepared is your family for the start of school? Although you’ll probably have to adjust to a new routine after the holidays, back-to-school time needn’t be stressful for parents and children. Double-check your children’s registration, especially if they are attending a new school. Secure medical and emergency forms and make sure records are up to date.

Regular routines Family routines tend to slide during the holiday period. The start of school means getting back to regular patterns of sleep, meals and daily rituals. Establishing a school routine can be a challenge for everyone so don’t leave things to the last minute. Start of calendar Being organized and prepared for the change in routine will help reduce stress. Ease into the school year schedule by planning for your various commitments. Start a family calendar where everyone can write down their activities. Stationary and uniforms Have you got school stationery lists? Uniforms? Schools often have dress codes. Find out what they are. Get an information pack and read through it carefully. Check with staff if you have any doubts or uncertainties. Shop early for supplies. Involve your children with back-to-school shopping and make them aware of the family budget. The start of the school year can put a financial burden on families.

Set Your Children Up For Life!

School lunches Nutrition is important. Plan healthy snacks, lunches and drinks. Consult with your kids and make healthy meal decisions together. Be ready with backpacks and lunch boxes. Be positive While some kids can’t wait to get back to school, others face the prospect with trepidation. Put a positive spin on starting, or returning to, school. Talk with your children about the fun things they’ll learn, the old friends they’ll see and the new ones they’ll make. Reassure them that if they’re starting a new class or a new school, other kids may share the same feelings and anxieties. Parents, naturally, desire the best for their children and want the school experience to be a positive one. Give your kids lots of love and support. Extra curricular activities Not all learning takes place in the school environment. Extra curricular activities help shape your children and encourage well-roundedness. Register early for sports, music, dance, drama or art classes to ensure a place. Cambridge has lots to offer. The K.S Cambridge School of Dance, for example, offers a variety of dance styles including ballet, jazz, tap and hip hop. Exams are held regularly, competition coaching is available, and there are opportunities to perform at community events.

FRIDAY JANUARY 11, 2019

Gough prepares for home World Cup

Born and raised in a town of less than 5,000 people, one would think it impossible to fly under the radar when you’ve achieved the things that Regan Gough has. A two time junior world champion, six time junior world medallist - equal best of any cyclist in New Zealand history - a Halberg Award at 17 and a world champion at 18. It’s an impressive list of accolades. Despite these achievements, the Hawkes Bay-born Cambridge resident likes to fly under the radar. Quiet and unassuming, Gough prefers to let his results on the bike speak for themselves. When he’s not on the bike, you’ll find him in his shed, working on his toys. Not bikes as one would expect, but cars. He is well known as the most mechanically minded member of the Vantage elite men’s endurance squad, which trains out of the Avantidrome. He won’t have as much time as he’d like to spend on the tools this summer though as he prepares to race in another home world cup. In December 2015 when the UCI Track Cycling World Cup rolled into Cambridge for the very first time, Gough was not far past his 19th birthday and had the cycling world at his feet. His junior world’s coach, now New Zealand women’s endurance head coach, Ross Machejefski, commented on that exact fact the previous year. “We can expect big things from this guy who is as impressive on the bike as he is off it. Regan is a bluechip prospect.” While it wouldn’t take much for one to assume Gough had gone quiet after he burst onto the scene as a fresh faced teenager, he has, as we should have

come to expect by now, been quietly racking up achievements many 22 year olds could only dream about. A fourth placing in the men’s team pursuit at the Olympic Games in Rio, three national road titles, and a silver medal and New Zealand record in the team pursuit at the World Championships in 2017. Gough has been anything but quiet. When the riders take to the local track this month, the temperature in the velodrome should hover at about the 30 degrees Celsius mark. While even the thought has most of us sweating and reaching for a cold beverage, that’s part and parcel for Gough and his teammates who expect to only add to the heat when they light up the boards in front of a packed home crowd. For the New Zealand team, racing a world cup at home is an extremely rare opportunity to showcase the sport of track cycling at the highest level to a wider audience. “Track cycling is special because you can watch the whole race, all within metres of your seat,” says Gough. “When you’re that close, you can sense the emotion, the pain and the loss. It gives you a true appreciation and understanding of the sport.” He’s also hoping the crowd will play their part in pushing the New Zealand team’s performance to the next level. The impression the crowd made on him during the 2015 event has him buoyed by the opportunity to pull on the distinctive black skinsuit in front of them once again. “I’d never raced in an event of that magnitude before, and [the crowd support] took me by surprise.

Having thousands of avid New Zealand cycling fans in such a confined area resulted in the most energetic environment I have ever raced in.” If Gough lines up in the team pursuit on January 18, he’ll be hoping the team can go one better than their silver at home in 2015. If they do, that’ll be yet another achievement to add to a growing list that appears to have no end in sight.

Strong finish for lacrosse Facing the Hamilton Suburbs in their final match for 2018, the Leamington Rugby Sports Club’s men’s lacrosse team wanted to finish up the year with a triumphant victory last month, and that they did, winning 10 – 2 in Te Awamutu. During their previous match up against the Hamilton team the Leamington lads lost by two points, “so we were looking to come out of the gates swinging this time,” said coach Anthony Warrington. Luckily for Leamington, the opponents were down a man, one of their key players, but were supported by ex-national player Jack Riggins. “We had to change up our

offensive strategy a bit this time,” Warrington explained. The Leamington team started strongly with a goal by Blake Anderson, but Suburbs quickly answered with one of their own from Jack Riggins. Lucas Thom then scored an “awesome” goal as described by Warrington, leaping from behind the goal and dunking the ball in around the side of the goal – which later earned “goal of the night”. From there the team quickly racked up a considerable lead with Suburbs scoring just once more, and missing plenty of opportunities to catch up. “They just couldn’t hit the back of the net,” said

Warrington. “Our keeper, Alex Warrington, kept us in the game with some textbook goalkeeping. They couldn’t get anything past him.” “Our defence played really well, too. Alistair Hearmon was a real danger on the transition and James Burns played some textbook defence on a player with more years’ experience playing than James’ age. “The same with Rowan Stone and Lee Kupferman, who were rocks in defence.” Man of the match was Finlay Pirie, “who was clinical in attack,” said Warrington, “scoring two goals for us and being crucial in us setting up our new offensive structure.”

Their next game is against Te Awamutu Marist on January 16.

FRIDAY JANUARY 11, 2019

with Jan Bilton

A Season to Savour Luscious fruits are the essence of summer. Peaches, apricots, nectarines, plums and melons are the basis for many traditional desserts. But they can also be fashioned into refreshing savoury salads especially those with Asian-inspired dressings containing lime juice, root ginger, mint and coriander. Purées prepared from the seasonal fruits are excellent drizzled over desserts, stirred into yoghurt or combined in sorbets and ice creams. They are also a staple for savoury sauces and dressings. Their vibrant summer colours on a plate complement grills, steamed fish and roasted poultry. Just add a little oil and a dash of sugar and spice. Or add to vinaigrettes to dress salad greens. For successful purées, choose ripe — even slightly overripe — fruit, and varieties that are easy to prepare. Cherries take too much pitting, blueberries and strawberries need to be strained to remove the seeds but ripe stone fruits or rock melons are perfect. Generally, about 500 grams of prepared fruit will provide one cup of purée. If the fruit tends to discolour add a pinch of vitamin C powder. The puréeing itself only takes a few minutes in a blender and for best colour and flavour, use as soon as possible.

Summer Fruit Salad with Thai Dressing Cranberry Chicken

PEACH & SAFFRON CHUTNEY Choose freestone peaches, if possible. 3cm knob root ginger, peeled and grated 2 shallots, diced 1 red chilli, seeded and diced 700g ripe peaches, stoned, peeled and chopped 3/4 cup lightly packed light brown sugar 1/2 cup sultanas 1/2 teaspoon saffron threads 3/4 cup white vinegar Place all the ingredients — except for the vinegar — in a heavybased saucepan. Stir well and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5 minutes. Add the vinegar and simmer on low heat for 30 minutes, until thickened. Pour into sterilised jars and seal. Makes about 3 cups.

SUMMER FRUIT SALAD WITH THAI DRESSING Add cooked chicken, pork or smoked salmon, if preferred. Thai Dressing: 1/4 cup lime juice 2 tablespoons peanut oil 1 tablespoon each: grated root ginger, fish sauce 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1-2 teaspoons each: brown sugar, diced chilli Salad: 3 nectarines, stoned and sliced 2 teaspoons lemon juice 1 cup each: mung bean sprouts, cubed rock or watermelon 1 small red chilli, seeded and sliced 2 spring onions, diagonally sliced 1 cup roasted peanuts 1/4 cup each: roughly chopped coriander, mint. Whisk the dressing ingredients in a bowl. Place the nectarines in a salad bowl and drizzle with the lemon juice to prevent browning. Add the other salad ingredients and carefully mix. Drizzle with the dressing just before serving. Serves 2.

Peach & Saffron Chutney OVEN-ROASTED SAVOURY PLUMS Delicious served with grills or cold meats. 8 plums, halved and stoned 1/2 cup red wine 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon Chinese five-spice 1 star anise salt and pepper to taste Preheat the oven to 200°C. Lightly oil a shallow baking dish. Place the plums — cut-side up — in the dish. Combine the remaining ingredients and drizzle over the plums. Bake for 20 minutes, until the plums are hot and the sauce is bubbling. Serves 4.

Waipa District Council will not accept paper-based building consents from mid-February, when a new electronic processing system comes into effect. Those applying for, processing and finalising building consents in Cambridge, and Waipa, will be required to do so through an online building consent processing system provided by New Zealand company Alpha One. Starting February 18, the new system will see people submit building consents online, track their consents and receive all correspondence digitally. This online system will enable us to keep up with demand so that we can continue to respond to our customers in a timely way. “Customers have told us our current system for processing building consents is not working for them. Traditionally we’ve used a paper-based system, which is

From mid February building consents must be sought online.

FRIDAY JANUARY 11, 2019

Italian Film Festival at Tivoli

MovieReview RETURN OF THE HERO Our first in the French Film Festival. Very funny, sharp-witted French period comedy with excellent interplay from the two brilliant leads. Elisabeth is upright, serious and honest. Captain Neuville is cowardly, deceitful and unscrupulous. She hates him. He despises her. However, by making him an operetta hero she became, in spite of herself, responsible for a sham. Delightful entertainment and most enjoyable.

World War I looming, Robert Conroy, a young Army private, adopts a stray, stump-tailed terrier. Conroy names his new friend Stubby and gives him a home, a family, and a chance to embark on the adventure that would define a century. The two quickly find themselves in the trenches of France and on the path to history. French soldier Gaston Baptiste befriends the man and dog and accompanies them along their epic journey through harsh conditions and incredible acts of courage. RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET Video game bad guy Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz must risk it all by traveling to the World Wide Web in search of a replacement part to save Vanellope's video game, "Sugar Rush." In way over their heads, Ralph and Vanellope rely on the citizens of the internet – the netizens – to help navigate their way, including an entrepreneur named Yesss, who is the head algorithm and the heart and soul of trend-making site BuzzzTube. Ralph Breaks the Internet provides a fun, family-friendly time at the movies.

SGT. STUBBY: AN UNLIKELY HERO A wonderful, wonderful TRUE WWI story of the most highly decorated little canine wonder. Official mascot of the 102nd Infantry Regiment (United States), assigned to the 26th (Yankee) Division in World War I, serving for 18 months participating in seventeen battles on the Western Front. He saved his regiment from surprise mustard gas attacks, found and comforted the wounded, once caught a German soldier, holding him there until American soldiers found him. So heartfelt, intense and sincere, it will bring you to tears. With

King honoured for services to squash

Cambridge’s international squash champion Joelle King was listed in the New Year 2019 Honours. She became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to squash. Joelle, who has been a professional squash player since 2004 and is now based in the UK, was reported to have been ‘shocked’ to find she was listed in the 2019 New Year Honours, but said it was “nice to be recognised in this way”. By Sarah Cowley Ross, Newsroom (www.newsroom. co.nz) (abridged)

Joelle King’s mission for 2019 is to be “the best in the world”. Talking to her during a short visit home to Cambridge, you feel a strong sense of belief and purpose. The Commonwealth Games squash double gold medallist has risen to number four in the world in the latest rankings, but 30-year-old King is not done yet. “I want to be world number one. I want to win the world champs.” Fresh off her first victory at November’s Platinum Professional Squash Association (PSA) tournament, the Hong Kong Open, King’s long-term goals are suddenly a reality. “For years I’ve always known I had the potential to win grand slams, but to actually do it is a bit of relief. It gives you so much confidence going forward,” she said. King’s focus in 2019 will be accumulating as many points as possible from every PSA tournament to move up the rankings. She reckons she could potentially be world number one in six months. 2018 was huge for her. At April’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (the third Games of her career), she was the most successful Kiwi athlete, in terms of individual medal count. Gold in the women’s singles, gold in the women’s doubles with Amanda Landers-Murphy and bronze in the mixed doubles with Paul Coll. She played all 10 days of competition then flew straight to two

more tournaments before returning home to New Zealand. To win in Hong Kong – beating new world number one, Egyptian Raneem El Welily in a thrilling final – was hugely significant for King.

King knows she needs to look after her body. She is a business, she says, which needs care and attention to grow. She also knows that being based in the English city of Bristol - alongside other professional players and her coach, Hadrian Stiff - is

Her success to date is not an accident. “It’s funny when people ask you how many hours a day do you train? I always say there’s lots of training, but on top of that I do physio, pilates, needling etc. It’s a fulltime gig.”

where she needs to be. King believes Stiff has given her the belief that she can be the world’s number one. Their connection came about after another player on the tour - current men’s world number 5, Marwan El Shorbagy -

asked King about her coaching setup while shooting the breeze after a tournament. At the time King was self-coached and, she admits, a bit lost. Egyptian El Shorbagy suggested his coach, Stiff - who also coaches the five of the world’s top seven men - could help her. Stiff emailed King, outlining areas of her game where he thought she could improve … and she has never looked back. King recently headed back to Bristol. It’s nice. she says, to be based in a country where you’re recognised as a professional rather than a social sport participant. She is now preparing for the professional squash season - which will again take her round the globe to PSA Tour tournaments and professional leagues in Europe right through to June. She’s able to do this globetrotting through the support she receives from High Performance Sport NZ, Squash NZ and other sponsors. King also has a setup in New York with her other coach, Rodney Eyles. She plays her first major tournament of the year there this month - the JP Morgan Tournament of Champions. A squash court will be set up in Grand Central station, putting the athletes on show. Then, it’s to the world championships in Chicago in late February, and from there she’ll play tournaments in Egypt, Amsterdam, Switzerland, England, Dubai and back to Hong Kong. She will finally return to New Zealand for the nationals in June.
