Paul Johnson is selling 40 soap box starter kits that for $50 each include entry into a new Soap Box Derby race being run in Cambridge on Anzac Day. The charmingly old-fashioned club fundraiser is taking off like Topsy. He has already sold 24 of the 40 kits initially put together and says the remaining 16 are likely to go fast. “So, anyone interested in taking part is advised to get in quick,” he advised. “The $50 you will pay covers the materials to make the soap box and the cost of entering the race.” The race is an initiative of the Veteran and Vintage Car Club’s Waikato branch, primarily to create awareness of the now 60-year-old club and boost membership.

Letters to the editor

Victims and volunteers Reading Viv Posselt’s piece on St John took me back nearly 20 years when Hugh and Debbie, his partner, came to the aid of my wife who had suffered a seizure when we were walking our dog. Their skill and dedication, we feel saved her life and we will be forever grateful. At the Waikato Hospital A&E we witnessed, whilst waiting 10 hours in the corridor, the sort of abuse, threats and intimidation they and the hospital staff suffered on a daily basis from drunken, drug-affected violent people they were obliged to help. Granted that many of them were probably afflicted by FASD and would be considered “unfit to plead” in court and would escape prosecution. Michael Cole reiterates the same problems that exist with assaults on police and the greater rights that criminals have than victims. A suspect has the right to remain silent thereby protect him/herself and other cooffenders from prosecution, gets name suppression often to the victim’s disadvantage. In 2009 an offender levy, expected to generate $13.5 million “over the next 4 years”, was to go toward a victim compensation fund, perhaps M.P. Louise Upston could tell us some more about who got it. The idea is to piggy-back the Soap Box Derby onto the Anzac Day Cambridge Cycling Festival on April 25. “It has been welcomed to the Festival by Sarah Ulmer, and the fact there will already be road closures in place means no special arrangements need to be made,” said Paul. “The idea is for this to be a completely fun, family-friendly add-on to the Festival.” Paul, who is a car club committee member, said the format would comprise five heats featuring eight soap boxes per heat, followed by a grand final. Races will be down Cambridge’s main street, and afterwards, the soap boxes will be “hooked up to a quad bike in the form of a road train” and dragged back up the street, giving spectators an opportunity to have a closer look at them. “Although it might seem to be a new event for Cambridge, I understand there used to be a similar derby held here years ago,” he said. “A very successful one has become established in Napier, as part of their annual Art Deco weekend.” The starter kit includes wheels, the frame and assorted nuts and bolts. Paul said the club would hold an open day

in February at their HQ in McLean St to advise those needing a hand with the build and to make sure that all entrants are complying with the regulations. A pre-race meeting will be held in March for final checks and to allow race entrants a practice run. “Basically, the karts have to be selfpropelled, completely non-powered, and must not have pedals. There will be a three-metre ‘push zone’ at the start of the race to get them going.” “We’ve been very lucky with sponsorship,” said Paul. “Ebbett Toyota is sponsoring the event. They’re also working with schools and will have three karts in the race. ITM Cambridge is providing the wooden materials and will race its own kart, and the Cambridge Lions provided funding for the wheels.” Paul isn’t entirely new to the gig, it seems. When he was an apprentice with Vauxhall in the UK, he founded a 24hour pedal car race which has gone on to become a regular fixture in his native Luton. Those keen to grab a kit should contact Paul on 021 688 211.

Maria’s work gets Race club plays civic thumbs up a blinder… By Viv Posselt

A Civic Award has been made to an epilepsy advisor with Epilepsy Waikato Charitable Trust (EWCT) to mark her “unswerving” commitment. Maria was presented with the award by Hamilton Mayor Andrew King. Many of the people Maria helps are in Cambridge. She told Cambridge News her job sees her travel throughout the Waikato/ Waipa/King Country area looking after people living with epilepsy and she also runs small social groups in Tokoroa, Tauranga, Hamilton and Te Awamutu. She received the award for her ‘outstanding contribution to Hamilton with services to health and to the community’, notably her ‘unswerving’ commitment to the needs of those with epilepsy in the Waikato region. “I probably travel about 1400km a month, meeting clients in their homes, giving talks or attending meetings,” she said The trust is an independent epilepsy regional provider and is not aligned to either Epilepsy New Zealand or the Epilepsy Foundation. “We don’t receive government funding, but rather philanthropic funding, so this award is wonderful recognition for the work that we have achieved since we were established in 2011,” Maria said.

Maria has produced two children’s epilepsy books and written 26 fact sheets since 2013, as well as an award-winning webpage. “It’s been hard work to get this far, but my job is really satisfying, and I know that I am making a real contribution and difference to those living with epilepsy. Maria home-schooled her two children and supported other home-school families before returning to the workforce around 2007, only to find herself facing a battle with breast cancer two years later. When the EWCT was formed in 2011, and she had recovered from her illness, and came on board as an advisor. Her award topped off a successful year for EWCT. In August, the trust initiated a Parliamentary petition urging improved access to the ketogenic diet, said to help with epilepsy, especially in children. A petition calling for a ketogenic dietician and support programme to be funded by the Waikato DHB to help those living with intractable epilepsy was presented to Parliament in October by EWCT patron and Hamilton West MP Tim Macindoe and a further submission went before Parliament’s Health Committee the following month. More information about epilepsy support is available from www.ewct.org. nz or contact Maria Lowe on 021 888 293 and maria@ewct.org.nz .

Maria Lowe received her Civic Award from Hamilton Mayor Andrew King.

A big crowd turned out for the Cambridge Raceway’s centenary meeting last Friday. Raceway Chief Executive Dave Branch said it was a fantastic night and both the turn out and betting turnover exceeded expectations. “We had over 2,000 people on course and took more than double through the tote than we had expected,” he said. The turnout was more than twice the average attendance at the track. “It was great to see the community come together to celebrate what is such an important achievement for us.” Dave said he was particularly impressed with the way people got into theme for the event which took on a Great Gatsby- Mark Vuletich won the overall Fashion in the Field prize. Peaky Blinders theme. “The crowd were awesome – they really got into the spirit of things and went to opshops to get their outfits,” he said. Off course there was keen interest in the fashion in the field stakes. The category winners were: Lads & Lasses Jess Stewart, Youngsters Ella Primmer, Gals Brittany Smith, Gentlemen Mark Vuletich and Ladies Angela Massey. Mark Vuletich was the overall winner and his prize was a package sponsored by SkyCity Hamilton Auckland Cup winner Turn It Up won the Gr.2 $60,000 Waikato Flying Mile, the feature event of the meeting, from Star Galleria. Competition fierce at waka ama champs Day one of this week’s Waka Ama action at Lake Karapiro saw the next generation of paddlers out on the water. The 30th Te Wananga o Aotearoa National Waka Ama Sprint Championships opened on Monday morning with crowds of around 1300 coming together for a shore-side powhiri that launched an action-packed six days of competition. Monday started off with 643 paddlers from 10 New Zealand clubs competing in the midgies division, the youngest paddlers seen as the future of Waka Ama. Tuesday’s competition was set to

include 1983 paddlers competing in 51 races. The event, which is one of the fastestgrowing water sports in New Zealand, continues to grow in popularity with a record number of paddlers signed up this year. The first Waka Ama Sprint Nationals was held at Lake Karapiro in 1990, with 17 clubs and 43 teams. This year, over 1700 teams and 3577 paddlers from 61 clubs are taking part, competing in 10 age divisions from January 14-19. Waka Ama New Zealand CEO Lara Collins said this was the biggest yet,

The Cook Islands midgies ready to race

with crews coming from all over the country. “This is a sport like no other, with its inclusive nature bringing together paddlers of all ages and ethnicities. Our youngest paddler competing this week is 5, and our oldest will turn 82 this year. Waka Ama may be the only sport where

grandmothers, grandfathers, mums, dads and their kids can come together to race competitively.” The final day of competition plays out at Lake Karapiro on Saturday January 19, with results from each day’s competition available at www. wakaama.co.nz.

French visitors help out at Sanctuary Mountain By Viv Posselt

Wildlife at Sanctuary Mountain got a taste of French joie de vivre last week when a visiting couple made the sanctuary a stop on their worldwide tour. Marine Fachaux and Rodrigue Fonteyne are travelling to parts of the globe which have specific links to their home in the north of France. Marine comes from Arras, and Rodrigue from Hazebrouck. The idea is to spread the importance of “solidarity”, particularly among youth they said, as well as leverage a bit of ‘teaching’ time around their travels to junior and senior students in their homeland. “We want to share with young people and teenagers the importance of solidarity, of standing together as young people in different parts of the world,” said Marine. “For this trip, we are involving four schools in our area – junior, high school and college level. We are sending information back to them on what we are doing on our travels and put information up on Facebook. Some of the schools are using that information to teach about the countries we are in.” After leaving France in July, the couple went first to Canada and then through South America – much of that by hitchhiking long distances and pitching their tent wherever they could. They spent Christmas on Easter Island in the Pacific and arrived in Auckland earlier this month. They then hitched down to Cambridge – honouring the Le Quesnoy sister city link – and settled into a few days at Sanctuary Mountain’s Visitor Centre. While there, they joined rangers in

walking throughout Maungataurari’s Southern Enclosure, a 64-hectare separately fenced bush block. Sanctuary Mountain general manager Geoff Churchill said Marine and Rodrigue had been a “great help” in placing over 300 tracking cards into the monitoring tunnels. “These cards were then collected, and the footprints on them were read to determine what species are within our enclosure,” Geoff explained. “As expected, the cards showed that only birds and bugs were walking through the tunnels, reaffirming that the Southern Enclosure is completely pest free. “We appreciate Marine and Rodrigue who came all the way from France to share their time, skills and knowledge,” he added. “We hope that they will share with others how important it is to protect and enhance our environment.” Marine, who is a qualified nurse, and her social worker partner Rodrigue left Cambridge earlier this week to continue their travels. They’re headed off to Wellington via Rotorua, and then back to Auckland – hitch-hiking for the most part. Wherever they’ve been, they have tried to get involved in local communities – working on farms, helping out where they can, even teaching a bit of French and rugby in Peru. “People have been very interested in what we are doing, and very kind,” said Marine. “We are very much enjoying finding out how different people live, what real life is like for different cultures. We want to share that with young people.” The couple will return to France in August.

Blue smokers’ enjoy Sunday morning blast By Viv Posselt It was all ‘Blue Smoke and Pedals’ at McLean St on Sunday morning – sometimes quite literally, it has to be said. Members of the Veteran and Vintage Car Club’s Waikato branch gathered at the Cambridge clubrooms for their annual motorcycle meet and picnic, featuring any old moped, scooter or low-powered motorcycle. The event has been going for over 20 years under the handle ‘Blue Smoke and Pedals’. Initially held at Mystery Creek, its name gives a meaningful nod to the characteristics of two-stroke motorbikes and the pedals many of them featured back in the day. Club chairman Tony Brierley said there were about 30 members in the group. They were put through their paces around a marked gymkhanastyle course that included – among other nifty tests for the riders – a slalom section, a rubber ring toss, and a circular chain pull.

Young Ella McCluskie proved it was a game for all ages on this old 50cc Benelli.

Hands up who want to help…

HELP YOUR CHILD EXCEL AT SCHOOL TUITION AT HOME OR IN HAMILTON

By Viv Posselt

The number of residents who are isolated in Cambridge is rising, and efforts are being made to help them. Age Concern and Cambridge Resthaven are sharing resources to provide a visiting service for residents – what they need is more volunteers. Hamilton’s visiting service coordinator for Age Concern, Bridgette Saunders, is helping launch the new partnership with Cambridge Resthaven. “We decided to join forces with them and share our resources,” she said. “That way, we will be able to cover more ground.” Age Concern supports older Kiwis to have a healthy lifestyle, connect with their community and be protected from harm. Resthaven Cambridge general manager Rachel Jones said they had just a handful of visiting volunteers before Age Concern Hamilton’s executive officer Brent Nielsen suggest joining forces late last year. “It makes absolute sense for us to work together on this,” she said. What is needed are men and women aged 18 and over who are prepared to give an hour a week to visit an older person in their home. They will join the ranks of about 21 existing volunteers already involved in a visiting service Those putting their hand up will be given an information pack before

going through to the next stage, which involves police vetting, reference checks, and an orientation meeting. They will be provided with ongoing support – but will need their own transport. The contact is social, usually around a cup of tea and a chat. Volunteers can take the older person out if they want and can change the arrangement or drop out if their circumstances change. “We do our best to match volunteers to the older people; we try to put people with the same interests together,” Brigette explained. “It is an ideal activity for someone who wants an opportunity to brighten someone’s week and make a new friendship, and it makes such a difference to the older person’s life.” If you are interested, 07-838 2266 or drop in to the Celebrating Age Centre at 30 Victoria St, Hamilton. Our white sparrow is a phoenix Craft fair will be She escaped the jaws of a cat – and has now risen from a burial bed. Luna the albino sparrow gave her new keepers a scare this week but was last reported to be “bouncing around”. Luna was taken to the Cambridge Bird Rescue centre, at the Huntington Stables Retreat on Maungakawa Rd, after a brush with a cat. The chick joined other native and exotic birds who are at the centre recuperating or being cared for permanently. Rescue Centre owner

Robyn Chappell announced the pending demise of Luna via Facebook, then revealed “one of you wonderful bird lovers must have said a small prayer to an Earth Goddess yesterday, because Luna decided not to die after all.” Luna had earlier been found shaking in spasms and unresponsive. Robyn told Facebook she made up a nectar drink and gave it to Luna, then put her in a “wee burial bed”. “We said our goodbyes…however,

three hours later, while walking around with her in my hand and waiting for her to die, she sat up! I gave her more of the mix, forced food down her throat thinking “okay, this is simply a last burst of life before keeling over” …but then she stood up, bit me…and started bouncing around! “ Robyn told the Cambridge News Luna was not “out of the woods” yet though. “She’s 100 times better than earlier in the week – but anything can happen,” she said.

The fair will be open to the public from 9am to 2pm on Auckland Anniversary Day, Monday January 28. A concert in the church from 10.30am to midday will entertain fair-goers with local talent, and there will be a special peal of the church bells. Organiser Ian Dunn has planned and run the craft fair twice a year since 1996. Fees raised from the event will go towards the upkeep of the church.

Christmas festival set to benefit community groups By Viv Posselt

Organisers of last month’s Cambridge Christmas Festival reckon they will be able to distribute somewhere between $20,000 and $25,000 from the 2018 event. That would put the amount available for distribution to various community groups once Festival organisers have covered their costs at around the same level as last year. Cambridge Christmas Festival president Deb Robinson said last week that the final amount would be known only towards the end of February. “Our members take a bit of a break after the festival ends, so we’ll get together to go through the applications in February and make our decision on the recipients after that. We usually get

about six or eight organisations asking us for funds.” Because it draws its membership from the greater Waikato area, groups from outside Cambridge have received funds in the past. Deb said the group currently had about 30 members. The Festival took place in the Cambridge Town Hall from December 1 to 16. The theme, ‘All Set For Christmas’, meant every tree was displayed with a fitting Christmas table setting. “It was a great success again this year, with loads of visitors coming through. Once we have decided on who we’re going to help fund, it will be all steam ahead to get ready for this year’s festival. It takes almost a year to get ready for it.”

Yacht club’s new boats unveiled By Viv Posselt

Six new yachts were unpacked and assembled at the Cambridge Yacht Club last weekend, marking a high point for the club and coming on stream just in time for the start of a new structured sailing programme. The new boats are LaserPerformance Z420s, which to the uninitiated are tougher and stronger than the boats used in other New Zealand youth programmes, and specifically designed to meet the demands of youth training programmes in some of the world’s more challenging locations. Designed in the United States, they are described as having reinforced hull/ deck joints, an integrated bow bumper, simplified rigging and stronger side

tanks, making for improved durability and better sailing. Cambridge Yacht Club commodore Chris Raynes said the purchase had been made possible through $85,000 provided by five organisations – Pub Charity Ltd, Trillian Trust, New Zealand Racing Board, Trust Waikato, and Sport Waikato, with the bulk of the money coming from Pub Charity and Trillian Trust. “We are very grateful for their support, and for the additional support given by the Waipa District Council, Cambridge Community Board and Jumble Around in grant donations to cover the cost of security fencing for the new boats. “We have brought them in specifically for a new structured sailing programme targeting middle and high school students, set up with more emphasis

on participation and learning sailing skills than on racing. It will be tailored to students from Year 7-13, catering for all sailing abilities and with the aim of entering one or two teams into the regional and national New Zealand Team Sailing Association regattas, depending on numbers. But our priority is getting kids on the water, learning to sail, with racing as an option.” Chris said 20 youngsters had signed up to start the programme early next month, more than he had originally anticipated. The new boats are an American Collegiate Specification, designed for college-aged sailors aged between 18 and 21. “They sail in places renowned for wind, like San Francisco Bay … they’re designed for tough conditions and are

much more durable. These boats should have a working life of about 15 years, where we currently get about 10 years out of our boats before they start softening up. “The new boats are right for the programme we want to offer. Other sailing programme providers are already showing a lot of interest in them.” The six yachts arrived just before Christmas. Chris said 10 local companies have offered sponsorship to subsidise the cost of the Learn to Sail and Youth 420 programmes, which start on February 5 and run through to April 2. A special unveiling of the boats with those sponsoring companies in attendance is planned at the programme launch on February 3.

FRIDAY JANUARY 18, 2019

Top Japanese cycling teams enter classic

Two professional Japanese road cycling teams will make their debut in the Grassroots New Zealand Cycle Classic being staged around Waipa from January 23 to 27. One is the 2018 No 1, UCI ranked team in the Asian calendar, the Kinan Cycling Team, and the other is the Aisan Racing Team, a UCI Continental registered team. Grassroots Trust NZ Cycle Classic race director Jorge Sandoval said it was a big deal to have the top ranked Asian UCI team racing in New Zealand. “All stage races in Asia are very competitive and feature many European teams. Having the Kinan team in the NZ Cycle Classic will lift the profile

of our event on the tour enormously. For Kinan, it’s also a big deal starting their season in New Zealand. They’re a very professional team; as well as the riders, they are bringing their manager, mechanic and media manager who will report daily to websites all over Asia and the world.” Leading the Kinan team is French hill climber Thomas Lebas, winner of Tour Hokaido, Tour de Flores, the international Tour of Setif in Algeria as well as the Mountains competition. Accompanying him in the team are Masaki Yamamoto, 2018 Asian U/23 and TTT champion, Yasuharu Nakajima, twice winner of Tour of Thailand, as well as Jim Okudo, Hiroshi Tsubaki and

Yudai Arashiro. Leading the Aisan Racing Team is sprinter Hayato Okamoto, the 20917 Asian under 23 road champion. He is also a stage winner at this year’s tour of Taiwan and at the 2017 Tour of Hokkaido, where he won a stage as well as the Sprints competition. Helping Okamoto at stage finishes are five experienced riders, Tomohiro Hayakawa, Kota Sumiyoshi,

Shotaro Watanabe, Ken Nakagawa and French rider Frederic Monier. “It’s so exciting having these teams contest the Grassroots Trust New Zealand Cycle Classic and race alongside the other international teams,” said Sandoval. “I’ve never had a Japanese team in our event before which is why this is so thrilling. I’ve followed and participated as a team manager in various

Aisan races in the past and I know they are very competitive, hard races to win.” The Grassroots Trust NZ Cycle Classic is a fivestage elite international men’s road cycling race, the only UCI 2.2 sanctioned race to be held in New Zealand this year. After being staged in the Wairarapa for the last three years, it will be staged this year entirely in and around Waipa. •More cycling news p16

FRIDAY JANUARY 18, 2019

Ross maintains second place in BNT V8s Cambridge V8 driver Nick Ross has come away from round three of the BNT V8s Championship at Highlands Motorsport Park near Cromwell in second overall for the weekend. He also retained second place in the Championship, though Australian driver Jack Smith has extended his points lead. Ross qualified his Total Lubricants Nissan Altima in third place, and followed it up with a third in race one, eighth in the second race and a second placing in the final race of the weekend. For Ross, it was a frustrating weekend not being able to extract the best performance out of his Nissan Altima. “Frustrating weekend for us. We just haven’t got any pace in the car at the moment. In the dry we just can’t keep up with Jack. We’re missing the set-up somewhere, we have some work to do,” said Ross. “We lost an engine in the car on Friday, which put us on the back foot. In the dry we just couldn’t keep up with Jack. In the wet the car is phenomenal. “We’re not in the right ball park at the moment, we need to find out where we’re going wrong.” Hoping to change his fortunes in the final race of the weekend, Ross and his Concept Motorsport team took a strategy gamble when wet weather descended on the circuit part way through the race, the team electing to pit and change to wet weather tyres while the rest of the field stayed on dry weather rubber. “We took the opportunity as soon as

Cambridge V8 driver Nick Ross competing at Highlands Motorsport Park near Cromwell over the weekend.

the safety car came out to come into the pits and change to wet tyres. Then just as we were about to go back out, the red flag came out. So we lost all the advantage that we had just gained. “On the restart, we had to start off the back again and work our way up. Salvaging a second place was a good result.” The BNT V8s Championship will stay in the South Island, with Round Four to be held at Teretonga near Invercargill next weekend – a circuit that Ross enjoys and has had success at over the years. “Really enjoy Teretonga. Turn one there is awesome, looking forward to getting there and seeing what we can do.”

Choosing a marriage celebrant Your wedding should reflect your own personality and style. The ceremony is the heart of the day, and is the reason why you and all your family and friends are there. A marriage celebrant is responsible for leading the ceremony. A celebrant can be anyone who has the qualifications to perform marriage ceremonies. They must be licensed to perform weddings under the Marriage Act 1955; some are approved and registered to perform civil union ceremonies under the 2004 Act. Celebrants advise couples on the many forms of wedding service, assist those who wish to write their own and advise on the legal procedures. Fees vary according to what their role entails and where the ceremony is to take place. Celebrants are often in demand, so make sure you book one well in advance.

Couples must nominate two choices for the ceremony venue on the licence application and celebrants are legally bound to conduct the service at either of those places. In the case of a serious disaster, a celebrant can instantly apply for a change of venue. The duration and content of the ceremony is flexible and depends entirely on the couple’s wishes. Often a run-through of the ceremony is held prior to the big day. Celebrants do not usually attend the reception but may be invited to enjoy a celebratory drink immediately after the ceremony. When choosing a celebrant, make sure they are the right fit for you. You may have to interview several before you find the one that best aligns with your vision. Stay true to yourselves.

Finding the perfect wedding venue isn’t easy. It is the one thing you simply can’t skip as there has to be a place for your friends and family to gather and celebrate. Budgets also come into play when considering your options. If an elegant ballroom, boutique hotel or fancy restaurant are out of your range, there are choices such as gardens (private or public), parks, beaches, even barns if you’re going rustic. Modern weddings can be conducted in art galleries, well-

designed restaurant spaces, or warehouses. Much depends on your personal style. Your dream venue might be a quiet stretch of beach on a Pacific island. Many travel agents have destination wedding planners who can help and there are numerous overseas hotels that specialise in weddings. Consult together as a couple, talk to others or engage a planner who is familiar with the capabilities of space, layout and items needed to transform a

Deciding on a wedding venue

venue. The aesthetic of the venue is important to enhancing the wedding experience, both for you as a couple as well as your guests. Take into account the number of guests, level of comfort, how accessible the venue is and whether décor is required. Staging the venue is another big consideration. It’s important to ask yourselves what feels authentic to you both, and to choose a space and a design that is a representation of who you are.

Exhibitors showcase the latest trends and fashions, and are full of ideas and helpful tips. You can browse through the sites, chat with exhibitors and discuss your wedding plans and ideas with service providers. Bridal expos should leave you inspired, informed and excited about planning your special wedding day. Planning your honeymoon Deciding on your honeymoon heaven can be a high-point of your wedding

FEATURE

planning. You want to start your new lives together with a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The sky’s the limit when it comes to choosing a honeymoon destination. New Zealand’s compact size lets you enjoy everything from quiet seclusion to excitement and adventure. A lot of couples opt for a mix of adventure and relaxation. Holiday packages are available or you can tailor-make your own honeymoon package. Decide whether you want a travel agent to organise a memorable magical overseas holiday. Determining how much money you can spend will influence your choices. If you’re after the best prices, book early. Resorts and popular destinations fill up fast so usually need to be booked well ahead of time. Be aware of when school holidays fall as you may not want to share your romantic get-away with a bunch of noisy kids at a family resort. There are plenty of resorts that cater to couples and have all the romantic bells

Wedding organisers

If you haven’t the time, know-how or confidence to organise your own wedding, there are professionals you can turn to. Wedding planners assist with the design, planning and management of your wedding. They can help source venues and suppliers, plan destination weddings, and co-ordinate services. Wedding planners can also assist with budgeting, check lists, preparation of guest lists and photoshoots. They’ll suggest event design, style and layout, manage programming, and organise a back-up plan. Professionals have the expertise to prepare legal documentation and translations, especially for destination weddings. Their range of skills covers every aspect that is needed to make your special day a success. Choose a planner who is passionate about making your wedding day one of the most significant milestones in your life.

and whistles. Talk to travel experts to get insider knowledge on how to plan a honeymoon that’s low on stress, big on savings and full of the ‘wow’ factor for you. Ideally, honeymoon planning should be a joint effort. By working together, the trip will suit both parties and not be tipped in favour of one or the other’s preferences. Avoid the temptation of copying another couple’s itinerary. What worked for them, may not necessarily work for you. Sure, talk to people and get advice, but tailor your honeymoon to suit your own needs. While it may be a good idea to surf the net for destinations, don’t solely rely on search engines as sometimes the reality doesn’t stack up.

Although weddings can get costly, keep honeymoon on your agenda. It’s a time to relax, spend quality time together and create special memories that you’ll cherish forever. If it’s not immediately feasible straight after the wedding, then schedule it for a time that suits.

Good sorts pitch in to improve Moon Creek The completion of the Cambridge Pipe Bridge Project was marked with a special community effort last month, with around 50 people turning out to take part in the Moon Creek stream clean up, planting day and BBQ. “It was a great day to celebrate the completion of a successful project as well as give back to the local community,” said Bilyana Podrumac, project engineer for Waipa District Council. The morning’s work on December 14 involved improving the area adjacent the work site by way of litter collection, weed management and a clean-up of the Moon Creek waterway, as well as native tree planting. “Due to the excellent volunteer

turnout, additional works were able to be completed for the neighbouring Riding for the Disabled dressage facility including maintenance to their car parking area, installation of two pedestrian and horse entry gates and some demolition and preparation works for a future sensory bridle path catering for those with hearing, vision and other impairments. “Thank you to all involved in making this day a success.” The event on Friday morning included staff from Fulton Hogan, Hirepool, Waipa Earthworks, WSP-Opus, Waipa District Council, Riding for the Disabled and members of the community who were involved in the Cambridge Pipe Bridge project.

THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING Old school magic meets the modern world in this epic adventure. Alex (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) thinks he's just another nobody, until he stumbles upon the mythical sword in the stone, Excalibur. Now, he must unite his friends and enemies into a band of knights and, together with the legendary wizard Merlin (Sir Patrick Stewart), take on the wicked enchantress Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson). With the future at stake, Alex must become the great leader he never dreamed he could be. Really good- think ‘The Goonies’.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD From DreamWorks Animation comes a surprising tale about growing up, finding the courage to face the unknown…and how nothing can ever train you to let go. What began as an unlikely friendship between an adolescent Viking and a fearsome Night Fury dragon has become an epic adventure spanning their lives. Welcome to the most astonishing chapter of one of the most beloved animated franchises in film history: How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. Now chief and ruler of Berk alongside Astrid, Hiccup has created a gloriously chaotic dragon utopia. When the sudden appearance of female Light Fury coincides with the darkest threat their village has ever faced, Hiccup and Toothless must leave the only home they’ve known and journey to a hidden world thought only to exist in myth. As their true destines are revealed, dragon and rider will fight together, to the very ends of the Earth, to protect everything they’ve grown to treasure. For How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, series director Dean DeBlois returns alongside the all-star cast.
