Find this pot pusher

Vandals are spoiling our community – and the community is striking back.

A restaurant has put a bounty on the head of a vandal who has targeted at least one institution in the town, and could have also been caught on film the week before.

Vandalism is becoming an unpalatable part of the Cambridge diet – and in response residents are turning to social media to catch the crims. Alpino Cambridge’s Facebook page announced the bounty alongside footage of a pot-pushing vandal taken just before midnight on Saturday. “Who would know this joker,” the post read. “He had nothing better to do last night 11.45pm. Help us find him. $200 Alpino Voucher as reward... what’s wrong with people.” The video footage showed the cap-wearing vandal shove over a large pot before continuing his wide stride down Victoria St, toting what looks like a soft serve ice cream. Alpino owners Noel and Kim Cimadom were surprised the person, which looked like a young man, could push the pot so casually, having required three men to move their other identical pot. With another vandalism incident occurring in Leamington on the same night, as well as glass being smashed at a bus stop further down the road, the couple thought it may have been the same person. “It’s like he’s gone on a rampage,” Kim said. “It’s more concerning what makes a person do that, why is he so angry? That concerns me more than my pot.” Despite losing a ceramic beauty valued at around a thousand dollars, the Cimadoms say what they’re really concerned about are the more important issues in society, like sustainable recycling and climate change, and problems facing other businesses in the Cambridge CBD. “We know many more people have had serious vandalism issues on Victoria St, well beyond tipped pots,” Kim said, adding that they wished to thank the public for their response.

NEW LISTING 105 Rosebanks Drive, Tamahere

Plans for the Tamahere development’s park and reserve area include a multi-feature skatepark and basketball half court.

By Sophie Iremonger The development of a commercial hub and recreation reserve in Tamahere is on the fast track to its completion date in June of this year. Developers of the Tamahere Recreation Reserve and Piazza project have confirmed the Piazza and skate park will likely be finished by the end of next month. Construction of the project at 61 Devine Rd began in May of last year, with general earthworks, drainage, levelling, topsoil and grassing of the sports fields completed a few months ago, going on to host the 2018 Waikato Lacrosse winter league and a few soccer matches. Work began in November to install retaining structures for a skate bowl and half pipes, along with other reinforced blockwork areas for the skate park. It has been designed to provide a more varied terrain suitable to both beginner skaters and experts, will be completed in late March. The new playground, set to be finished along with the rest of the project in June, was described by developers as a “destination playground”, providing a broader range of play equipment such as a “Themed Tuna” activity net, Rocktopus Mouse House, Papillo Bells and a Water Lily Carousel. Construction began midNovember following a successful approval process between Waikato District Council, contractors, and the Tamahere Community

TICKET GIVEAWAY

NZSO this month

Congratulations to Sandy Baker who this week won our ticket giveaway to the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s baroque concert The Night, to be performed at the St Peter’s Cathedral in Hamilton on June 7. We have another double pass to giveaway to an NZSO show announced this week, taking place at Claudelands Arena on February 15. Classical Journey, part of the NZSO’s summer tour, will feature works by orchestral greats Rossini, Haydn, Prokofiev, and Brahms, written during or inspired by the classical period 1730-1820. Classical Journey opens with Italian composer Rossini’s overture to his opera L’Italiana in Algeri, and is later followed by Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 Classical Symphony, one of his most popular works. The show closes with Brahms’ moving Variations on a Theme by Haydn, described as a “stunning composition” by NZSO Associate Conductor Hamish McKeich. “This is bright and cheerful music for summer which will appeal to both regular concert-goers and those hungry to experience the NZSO for the first time,” says McKeich. “They won’t go away disappointed.”

To go in the draw for the show, email your full name and contact number to sophie@cambridgenews.nz no later than 12pm on Monday, February 4.

Vandals are spoiling our community

Continued from page 1

“Facebook is a very powerful tool,” said Noel. “The post has reached around 36 thousand people… It’s a lot, we’ve never reached that.” The Alpino Facebook page has seen a surge in “Likes” (followers) as a result of the viral post, and the owners say they intend to stand by their offer of a $200 Alpino voucher for the person that can successfully identify the perpetrator. Police have been informed of the matter but could not provide additional information at the time of going to print. Additional CCTV footage in the area was due to be assessed this week. Waipa District Council spends tens of thousands of dollars annually on repairing intentional damage to signs, bus stops, street furniture (such as seats and bins) and removing graffiti.

The Facebook assessment: In response to the Alpino posting, Robyn Chappell of Huntington Stables Retreat Accommodation pledged $100 “towards the replacement of this gorgeous pot”. “Many of our valued guests have enjoyed the Alpino dining experience. We are totally gutted that someone deliberately broke one of those beautiful pots that welcome diners to the restaurant,” she said on the Facebook post. “Like all small businesses, the owners of Alpino Cambridge, their families and staff work incredibly hard to provide a wonderful, authentic and unique eatery for locals and to visitors to our town. We hope this vandal is found.” The body corporate chair of Lakewood Cambridge also chimed in, “Wonder if it’s the same guy that the week before walked around Lakewood Cambridge and pulled out plants. This footage is from Hells Pizza and shows him in action,” Mary Anne Gill wrote. The video can be viewed by searching Alpino Cambridge on Facebook.

Fundraising at new heights By Sophie Iremonger

On the same night, glass at a Victoria St bus stop was smashed.

Rachel Pridham, right-hand supporter of 2018 Starship fundraiser Kate Pridham, is setting her sights even higher in the pursuit of helping others – this time walking 100km to raise hundreds of dollars for Oxfam New Zealand. The Cambridge mum is part of a group of Matamata-Piako district women tackling the 2019 Oxfam Trailwalker, traversing 100km of Whakatāne terrain by foot in the pursuit of raising $2000 for the organisation, which tackles poverty in the south Pacific. “It’s about helping people that really have just absolutely nothing. And much like for people in Starship, it’s out of their control,” said Rachel. The humble mother of two has been steadily training for the big event next month, walking over 30k on the Te Awa walkway over the weekend, and planning on doing another 50km with the group this month along the Hauraki Rail Trail. “We’re all pretty determined, stubborn people,” Rachel laughed. “I’ll just be taking it (the 100km Oxfam walk) in blocks at a time. “I don’t think it’s about the hundred kilometres at the end, it’s about doing something good in the world.

Regardless of whether we walk 60 or a hundred or whatever we do, we’ve raised money for an organisation that is doing good in the world. “The main thing for us is that we reach our goal and do our best, that’s my attitude anyway!” Last year Rachel helped her thennine-year-old daughter Kate raise hundreds of dollars for Waikato’s Starship Hospital. “It just made us feel like we are doing something, not

just sitting around talking about all the things that go wrong in the world. We’re trying to make a difference, because there’s no point sitting there and complaining,” Rachel said. “It’s just trying to do your bit, and it is only a little bit.” Already the Tenacious Four team has raised over $1200. Donations towards their efforts can be made by searching “Tenacious Four” at www. oxfamtrailwalker.org.nz/search.

The Tenacious Four, Rexine Hawes, Amy Pollock, Rachel Pridham and Meghan Lancaster will walk 100km of Whakatāne terrain in the 2019 Oxfam Trailwalker on March 22.

Croquet garden bar plan goes to appeal

Cambridge Raceway chief executive Dave Branch says the decision to deny the Cambridge Croquet Club a special licence for a summer season is being appealed. Plans for the summer pop-up garden bar to underpin a season of croquet and draw people to the Cambridge Raceway were stymied by the Waipā Council District

Licensing Committee decision. The event went ahead on a much smaller scale and a final outdoor movie night attracted about 50 people last Saturday. “Movie nights were good, but the rest struggled because there was no reason for people to stick around. The idea was we would have a bar where people could relax

and play some croquet, but the decision to deny us a licence killed it.” The Cambridge Croquet Club was created, the Raceway website explains, to provide “a free immersive and family inclusive entertainment space to enjoy during the summer months”. But its plans to run a month-long series of games with a garden bar were turned down because the authority regarded it a contrived event. It said the Croquet Club was the name of a garden bar “not an organised club of any sort”. It was a promotional vehicle wholly owned by Cambridge Raceway. The committee said while it accepted the Raceway had had a difficult 2018 and was seeking ways to attract people to the site, it gained the impression the application was

simply an effort to extend the existing bar license onto the grass. Dave Branch said it wasn’t a contrived event. The club had invested heavily in the promotion and the decision would hurt it financially. The club hopes to win an appeal and have a second, full-steam season – but that is more likely to be next summer rather than this one. The club would make a loss on the event, but it would not be critical. Dave Branch said it was frustrating that other clubs had licenses which covered a circled area taking in grassed areas. “In our case, when we want outdoor events in summer, we are still having to send patrons to the grandstand to get a drink.”

Cycle Classic wraps up

As a week of cycling madness came to a close in Cambridge on Sunday, cycling legend Aaron Gate was named the overall winner of the New Zealand Cycle Classic. Racing for Ireland in a combined KiwiEuropean team, the 28-year-old Aucklander started the competition winning stage one over 132km on Wednesday last week, securing the tour leader’s yellow jersey. He retained the jersey after a 10th place finish in stage two on Thursday, won by the Swiss national team. In stage three, Australian rider Jensen Plowright (Drapac Cannondale Development Team) won the gruelling 152km race over Gate in a perfectly timed sprint finish, but thanks to a few well-placed finishes by Gate’s team mates, he continued to hold the yellow jersey in stage four on Saturday, where he held the lead for the final kilometre behind Australian Jay Vine (Team Nero Bianci) up the steep and windy Maungakawa Hill. But in the end it was Australian Jesse Featonby who secured the win for the Oliver’s Real Food Racing team. Riders from the Australian Cannondale team were first and second over the line in Sunday’s fifth and final stage where riders finished in the centre of town. Gate’s teammate Shane Archbold finished third, allowing him to keep the yellow jersey, and the team also won the tour’s overall team classification jersey. Cambridge’s very own GD Pringle Spoken Cycles team was not to be out done, finishing up the competition third overall out of the 19 elite international teams, with rider Theo Gilbertson winning the Under 23 jersey and Michael Torckler finishing up seventh overall for all riders in the competition. “I am extremely proud of our team but also of the local support we received,” said team manager Blair Taylor. “The team came third overall which is crazy for a local team, to think we have beaten some of the biggest

The feedback from the Grassroots Trust New Zealand Cycle Classic riders was overwhelmingly positive – the crowds with their cow bells lining the roads meant a lot to them.” NZ Cycle Classic Race Director Jorge Sandoval said he was thrilled with how the 32-year-old event’s first instance in Cambridge was such a success, “I’m very happy with how everything went the whole week up here in the new location of Waipa, (it) has been fantastic. The hospitality has been warm, the racing exciting and great to see so many spectators.”

ADVERTORIAL

ATTENTION: EMPLOYERS PAYDAY FILING STARTS SOON – GET READY NOW All employers must be registered and file PAYE information to the Inland Revenue each pay day from April 2019. Payday Filing is voluntary from 1st April 2018 and compulsory from 1st April 2019. Under this new process, employers will have to provide more accurate and timely information to the Inland Revenue and the filing deadlines are specifically tighter than previously. This improved information provided to Inland Revenue will give New Zealand families more certainty about what support they’re entitled to and what their payment obligations are.

Employers and payroll intermediaries will be required to submit employment information every payday instead of monthly. This replaces: • “Employer monthly schedule” (IR348) if employers use it – File or • “Employer schedule” (IR348) if employer is a paper filer Given the penalties imposed for late filing, it is vital employers have the appropriate processes in place to meet their obligations. This will inevitably result in the vast majority of employers wishing to use payroll software to enable online filing. If employers have PAYE/ESCT (employer superannuation contributions tax) of $50,000 or more per year, they will have to file electronically through software or my IR from 1st April 2019. If it’s less than $50,000 per year, employers can payday file on paper if they choose, but only from 1st April 2019. This is a big change for some employers, but it’s important. Webb & Wood Accountants, in conjunction with People in Mind and Inland Revenue, are hosting a free seminar covering what employers need to know about switching to payday filing. The seminar will cover the following: • What is payday filing • How to opt into payday filing • What happens once you have opted into payday filing • How to file your employment information and employee details • How to delegate other to access your Payroll returns account • An opportunity for questions and more The seminar is being held at 7pm on 13th February at the Cambridge Community Centre, 22a Taylor Street, Cambridge. RSVP to sue@webbwood.co.nz or visit www.webbwood.co.nz/page/events.

Netflix at school – it’s all very well St Peter’s, Cambridge is among the first schools in New Zealand to launch a “wellbeing Netflix” service which already reaches more than 200,000 families in Australia. The programme is being offered through the SchoolTV platform which features Michael Carr-Gregg and experts from New Zealand and Australia who provide practical strategies about managing issues and challenges. St Peter’s is the only Waikato school to offer the service and one of four in the country. It has just announced the formation of a wellbeing team for the school and is the first in the country to employ a fulltime Director of Wellbeing.

He is Michael Brown. SchoolTV is a subscription-based service that covers topics such as social media and digital reputation, drug and alcohol use, body image, internet addiction, sleep deprivation and cyberbullying and many more. “Schools need to be proactive in supporting families instead of waiting until something happens,” associate Principal Brendan Kelly said. “We need to ensure we have a shared approach and create a partnership between school and parents and their children. “It’s easy to search the internet for advice but it’s not so easy to find quality material from legitimate

Dancers continue success KS School of Dance has reported a few successful achievements made by their students over the summer break. Molly Robinson attended a Dance Masters International workshop in Auckland and also competed in their dance competition, the Passion Awards, where 22 dancers entered and only seven finalists were chosen – Molly being one of them. “It was a fantastic opportunity for her to dance against other talented dancers from New Zealand, she thoroughly enjoyed the experience,” said KS School of Dance director Kellie Schroer. Looking to study ballet full time next year, in 2019 Molly will be working very hard at the KS School of Dance to complete her dance exams. KS student Gabi Hill attended an International Ballet Workshop in Auckland recently, relishing the different tutors and learning a great deal from the classes. “Gabi is no stranger to the stage as she appeared in the RNZB production The Piano last year at the ASB Theatre - Aotea Centre in Auckland,” Schroer explained. Another KS student, Emily Carr was recently selected to be part of a documentary called “Girls Got Grit” by Mandi-Lynn from Wellington. “Emily spent a day with Mandi being interviewed and photographed in dance gear and unusual places like a river,” Schroer said. “She really enjoyed the Molly Robinson at the 2019 DMI Passion Awards. experience.”

Special reports on various subjects, such as exam stress and the programme 13 Reasons Why are also uploaded. More comfort for theatre-goers Line dancers back moving

By Viv Posselt

Cambridge’s Gaslight Theatre has had a makeover worth around $100,000 that not only involves a facelift but also promises a lot more comfort for its patrons. There is a fresh coat of heritage colours on the outside of the historic building, new carpeting and chairs inside, and a merlotcoloured velvet curtain that tucks back to improve the audience’s line of sight. There is also a new fully-ducted airconditioning system, installed in December. It is set to make theatre players and patrons much more comfortable, offering an even and near silent delivery of heating and cooling in the theatre auditorium and foyer. The previous system was so noisy that it often had to be turned off during performances. Additional cooling and heating systems have also been installed in the backstage area. The changes have delighted Cambridge Repertory Society president and vicepresident, Colin Morley and Peter Tait respectively. Colin is nearing the end of a two-year presidency and together with other committee members has helped identify what was needed and get the refurbishments underway. “It really has been a massive team effort,” he said. Fundraising for the various projects has been underway since 2017; money has come in from various trusts, large corporates and organisations and small businesses. “Local businesses have offered a lot of support on this, and we’re very grateful,” said Colin. “We haven’t got to a point of completing everything that needs done. It will be something of an ongoing project.” Peter said Cambridge-based suppliers

and contractors had been used whenever possible. One major exception was the involvement of Christchurch theatre curtain specialist John Herber for the making and hanging of the curtain – a task that included installing a new curved track which enables the curtains to be pulled out of the audience’s line of sight during performances. Work done to the auditorium floor before laying new carpet means the doors to the foyer now close effortlessly, and the 30-yearold chairs in the audience have been replaced by new high-backed ones.

Just around the corner is the completion of the portico at the entrance to the building. Some final brickwork is being done and the iconic gaslight holders will be moved to the front of the portico. “The primary reason for all this work is for the comfort and overall enjoyment of our patrons,” said Colin. “There have been times when it has become either too hot or too cold in the auditorium – those days are over.” The first 2019 performance at Gaslight will be in late March, early April – a play by Ron Blicq called Closure.

Waipa Wranglers are back on the line dance floor following the festive season break. After a flurry of socials around the Waikato and beyond before Christmas, we quit the dance floor for three weeks – with the exception of the Puni Line Dancers New Year’s Eve social at Pukekoe, a tradition for about the last 20 years. Not many of our group were able to go this time but we’ve heard it was the usual great way to see in the New Year. We had an early end of year mini social in November, with proceeds going to Air Ambulance and St John, two important services that we like to support. Now we are back into the social scene again with Hamilton Workingmen’s Club Line Dancers social last weekend, and coming up is the Morrinsville Line Dancers Social and plenty more to keep our feet and brains busy over the next month. The week before Christmas we had our class break up, a fun afternoon with games and of course dancing, music and chat. We’re looking forward to another year with many more new dances to learn and places to go and gain new friendships. It’s such a fun hobby which can be enjoyed by all ages, so why not give it go? The absolute beginners class starts Tuesday, February 5 at the Trinity Parish Church Hall on the corner of Queen and Bryce Sts, Cambridge, 12.30pm – 1.30pm. Usual class follows 1.30 to 3.30pm. Altrusa members celebrate 25 years By De-ane Busby, Altrusa International Cambridge

Our first meeting of the new year was an extra special one as we celebrated three of our members attaining 25 years of service to Altrusa International Cambridge. They were President Jenny Shaw, Joanne James and Rae Corbett. We acknowledged the dedication, time and effort they have given to Altrusa over that time. They have spent time collecting for various organizations, caring for the elderly, chairing meetings,

ladies with their 25 years service badges, a certificate and flowers. Coming up on April 6, Altrusa International Cambridge is holding another Fabric Fair in the Senior Citizens Hall, Millicich Pl from 9am.

We are currently seeking any donations of material, haberdashery and wool. Please phone De-ane on 827 8656 or Ann on 07 823 0214. All profits from sales at the fair will go back into the Cambridge community.

Craft fair bigger again The St Andrews Giant Craft and Collectable Fair set records this week when it exceeded its number of stalls once again. The biannual event on Monday attracted 128 stalls, with an excess of over 20 stalls on a waiting list. It follows on from the last round of the event in October, which also drew record numbers. From garden sculptures to hand-knitted teddy bears, a steady crowd flocked in throughout the morning to check out the new

wares. The 1884 church bells chimed at 10am, and local band Rewind performed inside the church from 10.30. New stall holders this year brought the likes of homemade peanut butter, ceramics, hand painted glassware and gluten free baking. “What a great day out to spend around St Andrew’s Craft Fair,” said organiser Ian Dunn. The Giant Craft and Collectable Fair will return in late October.

Cycling festival exceeds expectations

Along with the NZ Cycle Classic, the RIDE Cycling Festival wrapped up on Sunday with a “Party in the Park” at Victoria Square. Organised by Waipa District Council in conjunction with the RIDE festival committee, the family event served as a final big bash after a week-long festival of riding for all ages. Unlike the Cycle Classic, for UCI elite riders only, the RIDE Cycling Festival was all about fostering cycling within the community, putting on cycling races for all members of the community, from under 15s cycling in the Opening Night Criterium at St Peter’s School to masters racing in the Hobbiton movie set Gran Fondo, and even business teams competing in the BNZ Sprint Wars at the Avantidrome.

Known for its full name, the Three Peaks Manuka Honey RIDE: New Zealand’s Cycling Festival, the event was initiated by well-known local businessman and philanthropist Simon Perry. “I’m passionate about this region and know that cycling is a wonderful way to explore our stunning landscapes - while at the same time gaining enormous health benefits. The RIDE Festival is a way to combine those two things and hopefully inspire people to get out there on their bikes and explore – I personally believe there’s no better way to keep fit, spend time with friends and family – and quite simply, to have fun!” said Perry. “We had no idea what to expect in terms of spectators but were blown away by the

Karapiro’s Mighty River Domain has been a host of all things sports this month - from Cycle Classic finish lines to rowing regattas stretching dawn to dusk. A slightly less common sport featured at the venue on January 20, with the Waikato Beach Volley Open taking place at the Karapiro Sandcourts. Volleyballers from around the country and even European players visiting during their offseason competed in the event which saw 24 teams take part under a hot summer sun. The Hamiltonian pairing of Shaunna Polley and Julia Tilley were successful over Tjasa Kotnik and Sigrid Simonsson in the women’s final, securing the win for New Zealand. Johann Timmer and Mike Watson weren’t so successful in claiming their Kiwi victory, instead succumbing to their European competitors Martin Appelgren and Nejc Zemljak.

Reds get set for a busy year By Josh Easby

Volunteers at Cambridge Football Club are gearing up for hectic winter season with more than 600 players expected to wear the club’s traditional red and white strip this year. Having hosted national league games and regional rep training over spring and summer, the club’s focus is turning to a wide range of activities for men, women and young players. Northern League The club has high hopes for success in the Lotto NRFL second division after finishing mid-table in last year’s competition for clubs throughout the upper North Island. Head coach Paul Richardson said the Reds are targeting promotion to the first division this year. “We have to be ambitious,” he said. “We showed last year we were capable of matching the best and if we can find consistency in our form, we’ll be in the running for the title.” Cambridge’s 2018 season started with a string of wins and the Reds finished strongly but a mid-season dip in form, and six draws, proved costly.

“If we can turn draws into wins this year, we can give the title a decent shot,” Richardson said. The Reds already have five pre-season matches lined up, with the first at West Hamilton United on Saturday February 23 followed by a home game against Otumoetai on Saturday, March 2. Women’s football The club’s women’s team will again play in the Waikato A division, having been runners-up in last season’s Waikato Women’s Cup. Coach Andrew Taylor says the club hopes to recruit enough new players to field a reserves side as well as the first team. New players are encouraged to contact the club. Cambridge Sevens The club’s ninth annual 7-a-side tournaments are planned for Sunday, February 17 (men) and Sunday, March 10 (women). The tournaments draw teams from the Waikato and Bay of Plenty, providing a day of high-scoring action for spectators. Youth and junior federation

leagues Tthe club plans to field four teams in Waikato/Bay of Plenty leagues for players aged 12 to 14. The Ricki Herbert Football Academy (RHFA) will oversee coaching for boys’ U-12, U-13 and U-14 squads and an U-14 girls team. Coaching sessions for prospective players start on February 5. Junior player development The RHFA will also run the club’s Future Reds programme for boys and girls aged 6-14. The Future Reds scheme aims to help develop the next generation of footballers by providing the highest-possible standard of professional coaching. Onyx Cambridge Summer League The club’s annual weekly 5-a-side competition draws to its conclusion on Wednesday, February 6 with finals night. More than 300 men, women and young adults have taken part in this summer’s competition. More information about the club and its activities can be found at its website www.cambridgefootball.co.nz

DREAM JOB - DOING WHAT YOU LOVE EVERYDAY

At Kaz, we are inspired to see young people start out in business - living the dream and doing something that they love, and are passionate about. That’s how we met Ambra, a passionate animal lover whose passion has inspired her to start her own doggy daycare Doggy Bed & Biscuit, in Cambridge. Ambra often wondered what her own dog, Louie, a cavoodle, did all day to entertain himself when left at home alone he’s never alone now, he’s always with friends! Kaz created Ambra’s logo design, now emblazoned across signage, business cards and clothing - helping to build brand awareness. However our job doesn’t just stop there. We want to help grow Ambra’s business through introducing people to her Facebook page - which has gorgeous photos and funny videos of dogs enjoying their day. Promote her business via qualified word of mouth referrals - having experienced the awesome service offered by Ambra and her team. Over the coming year, Kaz and other BNI members will help Ambra with ideas to streamline her business, ensuring that she succeeds in business. All you have to do is purchase a $35 ticket and be at the Leamington Clubrooms in Carlyle Street from 4.00pm on Sunday February 10 to hear your number called. Some big prizes up for grabs. Being the 10th anniversary of the fishing contest, the club is making a big splash this year. “It’s the biggest contest yet,” says Roly Bolton,

Riders steal the show at champs

Cambridge’s Oliver Croucher helped beat the Aussies in a trans-Tasman clash at the North Island Jumping and Show Hunter Championships in Gisborne over the weekend, as part of a four-rider New Zealand team. They finished with eight points to the visitors in the Young Rider Test final. “Our team were very consistent and are a very talented bunch of riders,” said New Zealand chefs d equipe John Cottle. “Our Australian visitors hung in there and fought hard for a good competition.” Cambridge’s Todd Magner also finished on top at the North Island competition, winning the North Island Young Rider series aboard Awatuna Jonesy, followed by Te Awamutu rider Emily Hayward second on Yandoo Lady Gold and Cambridge’s Oliver Croucher third on Waitangi Surf.

CAMBRIDGE MASPORT

Cambridge rider Samantha Peters also finished second in the North Island SevenYear-Old round of the competition aboard Caesar, and finished third aboard Cadillac. Cambridge rider Emily Watson and horse Glenardon Summer Breeze finished on top in the HOYQ open high points Cat C and second for HOYQ pony highpoints 80cm Cat C. In the North Island Pro Amateur Rider class, Jaime Campbell finished second aboard Lanice van de Heffinck, with fellow Cambridge rider Samantha Peters in fourth. Cambridge Tramping Club enjoyed their first tramp of the year recently to the Tarawera Outlet on the eastern arm of Lake Tarawera, via the Tarawera Falls. Setting off early Sunday morning for Kawerau where we picked up permits to enter the forest and followed the forestry roads to the waterfall carpark. A 20 minute walk by the river took us to the spectacular falls where the river emerges out of the sheer cliff face, crashing 65 meters to the rocks below. It is thought to be an eroded end face of an ancient lava flow that poured from Mt Tarawera 11,000 years ago. After a welcome morning tea we made our way along a well formed track to the outlet alongside the river, which at times managed to disappear into the rock bed and remerge further on. Pohutakawa and rata clung to large volcanic boulders and birds were chatty over the sound of the river. We found a sheltered spot at the outlet for lunch then retraced our steps, pausing for a paddle and swim at a safe

Two big regattas on the rowing calendar took place simultaneously at Karapiro over the weekend, attracting 2250 athletes and around 1500 spectators. The Cambridge Town Cup saw secondary school rowers earn podium places in age group racing over Friday, Saturday and Sunday, whilst the North Island Club Championships, which kicked off on Saturday, saw medals being awarded to successful crews from around the North Island after Sunday and Monday’s finals. After five days of training camp leading up to the competition, St Peter’s School rowers had a great few days of racing in hot and windy conditions,

making 22 A finals, six B finals and two C finals. Beckie Leigh won the girls under eighteen single scull, and along with Terri Wyatt won the girls under 18 pair. They also joined Clare Milne, Amelia Barrell and coxswain Brooke Houston to win the girls under 18 quad. The school’s under 18 boys quad, made up of Patrick Griffin, Jacques Balsom, Jason Nel, Harry Lynch and coxswain Brooke Houston, also won their A final. Cambridge High School rowers at the competition earned top placings in six A finals, with the girls under 17 quad and the girls under 17 double both winning first place in their A finals, as well as the under 16 girls quad and under 15 girls

double both fifth in their A finals, the under 16 girls double third in their A final and the under 16 boys double third in their A final. Meanwhile in the North Island Club Champs, the Cambridge Rowing Club won the A final of the women’s senior coxless pair and was second in the A final for the women’s senior double scull, and placed third in the women’s senior coxed eight A final. Rowers are now preparing for the Aon Junior Regatta, the first regatta on the school calendar taking place February 23 – 24, followed by the North Island Secondary Schools Championships over March 8 – 10 and the Aon Maadi Cup (NZ Secondary Schools Championships) March 25 – 30.

Shootout in the snow at the Norskie Corral is a rib-tickling Norwegian crime thriller. Nels Coxman's quiet life as a snowplough driver comes crashing down when his beloved son dies under mysterious circumstances. His search for the truth soon becomes a quest for revenge against a psychotic drug lord named Viking and his sleazy henchmen. Transformed from upstanding citizen to coldblooded vigilante, Coxman unwittingly sets off a chain of events that includes a kidnapping, a series of deadly misunderstandings and a turf war between Viking and a rival boss. Based on the 2014 Norwegian film 'In Order of Disappearance'.

Paris 1930. In the aftermath of Europe’s Great War thousands of children lost their parents, including Paul, relegated to a bleak orphanage until he is unexpectedly plucked from his cheerless lodgings by Mme Celestine Borel who says she is a distant relative, taking him to live with her over the summer. Plunked down in the farmhouse that Celestine shares with her gruff husband, a gamekeeper on the sprawling estate owned and overseen by the Count de la Fresnaye, city boy Paul finds himself entirely confounded by the peculiarities of country life. On his wanderings around the property Paul avoids the widowed Count’s manor, though he soon encounters the enigmatic Totoche. Technically a poacher, Totoche is a true man of the land. Ever observant, Paul notices a connection between Totoche and Celestine, using his discovery to persuade a reluctant Totoche to apprentice him to the poaching trade and incidentally reveal some clues to the mystery of his parentage. In the heart of the fairytale Solonge Paul will learn about life and also about the forest and its secrets. Magnificent. Full of quiet emotion at many levels, a beautiful story and another fine example of the hidden European film industry.
