The money or the bag… By Sophie Iremonger

Shoppers have gone BYO rather than pay for plastic bags at supermarkets.

Just a few months after supermarkets stopped handing out bags – and left shoppers with the option of bringing their own or paying for them – couples like Margaret and Ian Cartwright of Cambridge have it well sorted. “We’ve got quite the collection,” said Margaret, at the end of a shop at New World, Cambridge. “We take our bags everywhere. “It’s just automatic now, you take a bag. Most people do.” Ahead of the change a survey showed more than nine out of 10 shoppers supported removing the free plastic bags, which were usually recycled once as a kitchen rubbish bag before being consigned to a land fill. New Zealand shoppers were using millions of them a year, and each would take about a century to breakdown. Ian and Margaret Cartwright now keep a supply of bags stored in their car to make sure they don’t forget, and most of the time it works. “Except for the other day when we came in a different car and had no bags,” Ian sighed. The phase-out is part of the government’s new legislation on plastic shopping bags announced in December last year – the Waste Minimisation (Plastic Shopping Bags) Regulations 2018 – which will see single use plastic carry bags removed from shops within the next three months. From July 1 it will be illegal for retail stores to sell or provide plastic bags for the purpose of carrying or distributing their sold goods. This applies to plastic bags which have carry handles, are new or unused, and are made of any type of plastic less than 70 microns in thickness – including biodegradable plastics. Continued on page 2

It also includes the heavier boutiquestyle shopping bags that some retail stores initially introduced as reusable alternatives. New World stores have stopped supplying the reusable plastic bags, now offering paper bags, reusable fabric bags and chiller bags. “A lot has been happening in the background,” said Logan McKenzie, owner/operator of New World Cambridge, explaining the logistics of the phase-out. Across Foodstuffs supermarkets nationwide, 350 million single-use plastic bags will no longer be distributed each year. “Waste diversion is critical to a sustainable community, and as a cornerstone of this community,” said McKenzie, whose store stopped providing single use plastic bags on January 1, along with the rest of the country’s Foodstuffs supermarkets. Foodstuffs NZ Head of External Relations Antoinette Laird said the organisation was investing in “so many initiatives to reduce or eliminate unnecessary packaging”, encouraging BYO containers for meat and seafood departments, and working with suppliers to help them reformat their packaging. At the Cambridge New World, other aspects of plastic packaging are being looked at too, like swapping non-compostable lines of glad wrap for alternative solutions. The store is quite mindful of recycling too, diverting over 90 percent of our store waste away from landfills.

Countdown was the first supermarket brand to phase out single use plastic carrier bags last year on October 15, two and a half months ahead of schedule. A Countdown spokesperson said the organisation would be ready to meet the new government legislation by July. “We know our customers are keen for us to phase out the barrier bags in a number of areas in our stores and it’s something we’re definitely looking at. Our challenge is finding convenient options that work for stores and won’t have a big cost impact for customers. “We’re currently trialling different bread bag options in a few stores, and looking at a range of different options for produce.” Rest assured not all forms of plastic are being eliminated from New Zealand retail stores, just the unnecessary ones. Foods like raw fish from the seafood department or shaved ham from the deli will still be sold in the usual smaller plastic bags at the supermarket. Pet owners can still buy rolls of plastic bags to pick up after their pooch, and rubbish bags will still be sold as normal. Plastic bags without handles will not be affected. Plastic bags that form an integral part of a product’s packaging, such as sealed pouches with handles, will also still be allowed. Shops around Cambridge are changing their ways as the July 1 deadline fast approaches. Wholly Cow butchery has already

Vege Fresh is now charging 15 cents for plastic carry bags – ordering in a biodegradable option made from corn – and offers a reusable plastic-free produce bag made by Boomerang Bags in Cambridge. Over the Moon Deli has always supplied paper carry bags only, and has signage encouraging customers to bring in their own reusable containers. Cheeses are also available in a plastic-free wrap. Easter eggs sure to bring a smile By Sophie Iremonger One person has made a difference for young children in Cambridge, organising a collection of hundreds of Easter eggs for Cambridge children who otherwise may not have received a chocolate egg this year. The kicker is, that person is 94 years old. Pierre Syben organised the collection of over 200 packets of Easter eggs on his own accord, after finding out that some young children in Cambridge had never had an Easter egg. “I thought, well, thinking about it doesn’t help the children does it? And so I started talking to my neighbours, talking to a few people here at St Kilda, and started doing things.” Other residents and staff from the Bupa St Kilda village pitched in, but Pierre did a lot of the work himself, purchasing hundreds of Easter eggs from The Warehouse in Cambridge. Shaun Baker, head of the Cambridge Salvation Army which collected the eggs this week, said the donation would make a lot of kids very happy. “That’s just what I wanted,” Pierre said. Debra Brown, village assistant at St Kilda, explained how Pierre had been saddened to learn that

some kids just don’t get chocolate eggs on Easter weekend. “This really saddened him, he wanted to bring a smile to these families, especially the children,”

she explained. “So he came up with the initiative to collect and distribute Easter eggs for families in need around Cambridge. He has purchased a significant amount of chocolate eggs

himself, and our residents here at St Kilda have also supplied items.” Debra said people were quite taken back that a person at 94 years of age had organised such a thing.

Sharp as a tack, Pierre simply shrugged and said, “94 years old doesn’t mean anything to the children, it has nothing to do with it. And I’ve had a lot of help too.”

The Salvation Army, Cambridge’s only food bank, began distributing the eggs this week to families in need. The official day for children to hunt for Easter eggs is on Sunday, April 21.

Pierre Syben, left, hands over the massive haul of chocolate Easter eggs to Salvation Army food bank coordinator Billie Brown.

Neighbourhood Support a community asset On Friday, March 29 we just scrapped in with our Neighbourhood street party in time to officially be part of the nationwide Neighbours Day (March 22- 31). It was a good clear night and we were able to sit outside around the BBQ. A good turnout of neighbours proved to be a great way for our new neighbours in the street to meet the others and share contact details. We keep these details up to date and pass them onto

Hannah at Neighbourhood Support Cambridge, because “what never happens, happens”. With this in mind we also distributed the latest Waipa Emergency Planning Guide. Yours truly was supposed to take a photo of our group for this publication, but that never happened. Our street is functioning well with day to day kindness. For instance, John and I were away for a week and we left our front door unlocked! Our

neighbour spotted a silver car pull into our place, which was there for a few moments, so she went down to check. The chap was looking for John and was sure he must be around as the front door was open! Thank goodness it was someone we know. This same neighbour collects our mail and another’s son mows our lawn. Thanks to these wonderful neighbours there are no tell-tale signs (leaving the front door unlocked to be excluded) for any

FDANZ

would-be intruder. I must give John his kudos here as we have an unwell man a few doors down, John checks on him most days in the evening. Home help and Meals on Wheels have enabled him to stay home but we still need neighbours to call in and do odd jobs that would otherwise get left undone, plus a little bit of company is always welcome. Another neighbour dishes out fruit when plentiful. Little things

make a huge difference. As I said, we function well with a little bit of kindness. I hope you all have the same neighbourly vibe in your street – don’t leave it all to your group leaders, help share the goodwill. Police: and then there were two By Sophie Iremonger

Police numbers have been boosted in Cambridge with the addition of two new staff at the end of 2018, but police won’t say whether more are being lined up. New Zealand Police confirmed the two police officers brought to Cambridge in November were the only officers added to the station since a 2016 reduction, not counting staff replacements. Police say they will only name one of the two new staff – Karen Verwey - because the other officer had not given his consent to being named. Cambridge lost its 24/7 police base, as well as two Cambridge-based detectives in 2016. Then there were complaints when Waikato Police announced 12 months ago that Matamata, Te Kuiti and Thames police stations would go 24/7. A near $300 million budget increase announced last year paved the way for an eventual increase of 1800 police across the country. It included 127 police officers being added to the Waikato over the next five years, 23 of which were added before the end of the year. This included two for the Cambridge Police station in November. Police will not say whether any of the 104 to come will be assigned to Cambridge, but there are suggestions the North Waikato centre will be the prime beneficiaries. The November additions were welcomed by Mike Pettit, Cambridge Community Board chairman, because it gave police the flexibility to reintroduce 24-hour shifts. “The Cambridge Community Board, over the past three years has strongly advocated to have our policing levels back to what they were in 2015. We advocated for this based on statistics that showed crime in Cambridge was on the increase,” he said. After Fez Kebab in Leamington was burgled on July 31, 2016, a petition was launched calling for the return to 24/7 policing in Cambridge. It was supported by Cambridge’s Taupo electorate MP Louise Upston. At the time she said police were a separate entity from the government and made their own decisions as to where personnel would be deployed.

One person died and another person was critically injured in two separate traffic accidents on rural roads outside Cambridge last week. Blair Allison Phelps, 42, of Mamaku, died in a collision involving a car and a motorbike on Cambridge Rd in Roto-orangi. The crash happened during heavy fog, around 7am on Friday. On Thursday, a woman was ejected from a vehicle when two cars crashed in Tamahere. She was left in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 3pm on Thursday. The area at the Bruntwood Road-Tauwhare Road intersection was closed while the serious crash unit investigated. Senior Sergeant Mike Henwood said initial indications were that the woman had not been wearing a seatbelt. The incidents added to New Zealand’s nationwide road toll of 26 people last week.

became a Police officer last August and spent her first three months on the job in Hamilton – one month in field training and two months in the tactical crime unit. The 27-year-old constable said she was drawn to the police force by the variety of work. “You never know what sort of job you’re going to get from day to day,” she said. “You’re not just stuck in the office, you’re going out there and working with people, and you get to meet people from all different backgrounds.” As for Cambridge, she said, “It’s definitely a fun community to work in”. “The public definitely has a high expectation of the type of service they expect us to deliver, so you’ve got to really make sure that we’re meeting their expectations.”

Students visit parliament from the classroom By Sophie Iremonger

MP Louise Upston showed students how they can see inside parliament themselves, through the Parliament XR 360° virtual reality tour.

MP Louise Upston met with Cambridge students recently to show them how they can get involved in Parliament. Visiting Year 9 students at St Peter’s School on March 29, the Taupo electorate MP demonstrated how to use the new Parliament XR virtual reality app. Launched last year, the free app uses the latest virtual reality technology to give users the impression they’re walking around Parliament House themselves. Starting outside on the street, users can explore into the iconic debating chamber, with 360-degree view giving the option to look up at the building’s iconic ceilings or down at the historic green or red carpet. Users can also focus on points of interest and learn more about features of the

debating chamber, with video and sound bites incorporated into the experience. “It’s about, ‘how do we make parliament more accessible to you?’,” Upston said, explaining that the demographic she hears the least from is people under 30. “It’s a real challenge to make sure I hear your views.” Upston showed students how smartphones could be turned into a virtual reality device, simply by popping them into a basic, low cost headset created by Spark. Upston left several headset

packs with the school so students could continue to explore parliament. “Just because you’re not 18 yet doesn’t mean you don’t have a voice,” Upston told students. “You’re not powerless, you can contact an MP and tell them your views. … That’s part of this discussion today, to say I work for you just as much as I work for anyone else. “And hopefully by having a look at this virtual reality tour that will give you more of a sense of it.”

Grand Garage Sale a hit The Thornton Club held a hugely successful Grand Garage Sale on March 30 raising over $2000 towards restoration work to the historic 1898 bowling club building. Local elite rowers Zoe McBride, Brook Robertson, Michael Brake and Samantha Voss helped out on the day, challenging shoppers to a game of bowls for a gold coin donation. Cambridge businesses contributed items towards the silent auction, and many residents donated goods for the garage sale. Peter Hand, one of the main organisers of the event, was rapt with how it turned out. “So far we have raised over $2K with more funds to come in from the auction,” he said. “A very special thanks to all the club members who helped. “It was really cool to see members of the community turn out and support the day. Their contributions are not only helping to restore a local building, it’s keeping an iconic piece of Cambridge history alive and well too.”

Community Board supporting the public Regarding the latest unfortunate ramraid on Stirling Sports the Cambridge Community Board (CCB) have decided to work with Waipa District Council around some long-term solutions. These will fit in with the wider street scape that can be extended in a planned way to other areas of the CBD. Examples could include one or two more large rocks, a solid bike stand, a seat for resting or a doggy-doo bin. The outcome we believe must strongly reflect general public and ratepayer benefit. The CCB have asked for an onsite meeting with the Waipa roading staff regarding the repair work on Thornton Road. This was tied into the original resurfacing

Mike Pettit, Chairman, Cambridge Community Board

that took place 16 months ago. We will access the finished job against the contract standard for the project. The CCB received a letter from French Pass and Maungakawa Road residents regarding illegal rubbish being dumped at the corner of the two stated roads. The council will be taking proactive action on this. We have also asked Parks and Reserves to establish a new and explicitly clear sign at the corner. Included in a mail drop will be rubbish collection options for residents. Water consumption has been down by 24% over summer. One would attribute much of this to water meters which is some evidence they are achieving their objective. Building statistics for February show a total of 48 consents issued for Cambridge at a total value of $19,409,771, with 32 being for new house dwellings, at an average cost of $508,108. Maungatautari Ward had a total of six consents issued, two being houses. In total 117 consents were issued across Waipa with $31,713,265. The local economy continues to be buoyant. The CCB at the Sister City NZ Conference won the Best Project (Community Organisations) and then the Best Overall Project. The project was based around Armistice in Cambridge, remembering our Sister City in Le Quesnoy. I wish to acknowledge the significant roles

that the Armistice in Cambridge Committee (the activities at the lake) and the Chamber of Commerce played in the application content. The board put in a 16-point submission to the Annual plan which will be considered by Council. The Annual Plan will be signed off in June for implementation in July. Included was; cycle/walk bridge over the

Waikato River, urgent conclusion of the parking and transport review for Cambridge, additional parking around Cambridge High School, a pedestrian safety review, and a clean-up of Lake Te Koo Utu including consultation with local iwi. Elections are coming up, so please consider standing for the CCB or Council. Your town needs you! Our CCB meetings take place on

the first Wednesday of each month starting with a public forum at 6pm, where members of the public are able to come and speak. To place an item on the formal agenda, please do so at least 10 days before the meeting, either by emailing myself on mike.pettit@ waipadc.govt.nz or our CCB secretary, jo.gread@waipadc.govt. nz. Or contact any board member by visiting www.waipadc.govt.nz.

FRIDAY APRIL 12, 2019

Cycling festival fast approaching

Cyclists are gearing up for a highlight on the Cambridge cycling calendar – the 2019 Grassroots Trust Cambridge Cycling Festival. From three-year-olds on training wheels to elite world champions, cyclists of every age and ability can take part in the familyfriendly annual event. This year will be the fifth time the Cambridge Cycling Festival takes place, running along the main street of Cambridge

throughout the afternoon on Anzac Day, April 25. Event organiser and ambassador Sarah Ulmer said she loved all aspects of the event, particularly the fact that it brings the community together. “Seeing hundreds of kids whipping around the streets again, just loving riding their bikes,” she said, “and linking elite cyclists with kids and the wider community.”

The event aims to offer something for everyone, running road race events for every age group followed by an elites race at the end featuring Olympics medallists and world champions. A kids’ bike skills course will be set up at Victoria Square by Cambridge resident and freestyle BMXer Paul Langlands, who will put on his own aerial display, along with bouncy castles and food trucks at the square.

Café crawl

Aiming to get people out on their bikes in the lead up to the Cambridge Cycling Festival, the Cambridge Café Crawl is all about “Ride, eat, drink, repeat” – prompting people to ride their bikes to as many participating cafes as possible. The more cafes or bars you ride to, the more entries you have to win one of two bikes from EVO Cycles – including a $3,300 e-bike. Just make sure you register online before you pedal at www. cambridgecyclingfestival.co.nz. The winner will be drawn at the Cambridge Cycling Festival on April 25. Winners must be present on the day. Cafes include: The Coffee Club, St Kilda Café & Bistro, The Bikery Café, Red Cherry, Alpha St Kitchen, Café 9, Robert Harris, Good Union, Paddock, Crave, Homebrew Coffee, Alpino, Volare, Five Stags, A-diction Espresso Bar, The Deli on the Corner, Panache French Bakery, Onyx, Podium Cafe, Suburban Kitchen, Fran’s Café and Last year’s Cambridge Cycling Festival was a hit with Cambridge’s youngest riders. Instone Café.

A new event this year will be the Soap Box Derby, organised by the Waikato Vintage Car Club, which will see 40 homemade soap box karts race their way down the main street. “The whole idea of the Cycling Festival is to bring together elite cyclists and the community and to help encourage and inspire as many people as possible to get excited about riding their bikes.”

Battle of the businesses

The GW Scott & Associates Battle of the Businesses was such a hit at last year’s Cambridge Cycling Festival that organisers are bringing it back again. The four-person cycle relay does not need posh bikes or Lycraladen riders, but it does need a little creativity. Trophies up for grabs this year are for “First team across the line”, and “Most feverish team” – awarded to the most enthusiastic team. This could include team costumes, cheer squads – whatever stands out and gets people going. Anyone can enter a business team, as long as the captain of the team works for the business. Winners will receive one of two business lunches at Alpino worth $200 each. Entry is $50 per fourperson team, at www. cambridgecyclingfestival.co.nz.

FRIDAY APRIL 12, 2019

Gala goes well CAB awareness week Cambridge Primary School dodged a few early morning showers on Saturday, March 30 for their biennial school gala. New Zealand’s longest inflatable obstacle course was a popular feature this year, as was the ‘Dunk the Teacher’ stall, water zorbs, a petting zoo, wobbly train and gala activities – from traditional amusements to modern ideas on how to reduce waste. As a ‘Gold Enviro School’ organisers wanted to ensure there was as little waste as possible from the event, and so the PTA, staff and students came up with a few creative ideas of things to sell using upcycling and found items. At the popular bake stall, treats were presented in innovative ways to ensure minimal plastic was used. A range of recycling options were also on offer. Enviro blogger ‘Mainstream Green’ went along to the event, noting: “Pretty much everything that was being sold was either edible, reusable, upcycled or growing! Much of the event was old school fun activities – got to love experiences over things.”

Students sold items they’d made from reusable materials during the school gala.

The Citizens Advice Bureau launched a new public website this week, coinciding with CAB’s Awareness Week running April 8 – 14. As part of the Awareness Week, which this year has the theme “Discover your rights”, the CAB hopes to strengthen its face-to-face service with the public, which is offered at 83 locations around the country. CAB Cambridge member Ann Maclure said, “Every day we help people in hardship because they either don’t know their rights or they face barriers accessing these. “Making the information on our website as accessible as possible is about helping to break down those barriers so people can find out what they need to know and be empowered to take the next steps.” The new website – www.cab.org.nz – aims to give people easier access to information about their rights and responsibilities, covering over 300 subjects with information presented in a simple question-and-answer type format. “The website provides over 2,000 questions and answers about people’s rights that are based on real issues encountered by clients, as well as an extensive community directory of services and groups,” Ann explained. “It’s an amazing resource for the community and I encourage everyone to have it bookmarked as a go-to resource for navigating life in Aotearoa.” Despite having so much information online, the CAB doesn’t think the need for a human service will go away any time soon. “People increasingly value the chance to talk to a real human being and to have practical support to navigate the digital world. So, while our website is a fantastic tool, we think it’s also important that people

know we are here, face to face and over the phone – for everyone, about anything.” Citizens Advice Bureau Cambridge is located at 62 Alpha Street. Its opening hours are 9am-4.30pm Monday to Friday. No appointment is needed. CAB Cambridge can also be phoned on 827 4855 or 0800 367 222. To find out more visit the new website, www.cab.org.nz.

Pensioner housing upgrade

THE ‘YES’ STORY

I set up Yes Mortgages in 2007, after starting in the Mortgage Industry in 2004 when my wife and I moved to Cambridge. We have brought up our 5 children here, who are aged from 7 years to 16 years old. It has been a privilege to work with hundreds of clients in Cambridge, the Waikato and beyond over the last 15 years. I see every clients situation as being unique and personal to them. Every client is different and I will try and tailor their loan and what I can do for them, to suit their needs. I believe people should be treated the same, whether they are doing a $20,000 loan or a $1,020,000 loan. As the Director of Yes Mortgages, the three key areas of my business are integrity, confidentiality and approachability. As a client, you deserve to be treated with respect and to be able to trust your advisor. You share financial information with me that is private and this should be kept confidential. You should be able to contact me when it suits you and have an advisor who is friendly and understanding. These are the things I will strive to do for you. I am a Registered Financial Advisor and a member of Financial Advice NZ. I look forward to helping you with your mortgage needs in the future. Gavin Lynch – Director, Yes Mortgages. Waipa District Council is continuing to upgrade its pensioner housing units. The organisation has been upgrading the buildings over the past three years to ensure they are warm, safe and modernised. 129 pensioner housing units are owned by the council across eight complexes in Cambridge, Kihikihi and Te Awamutu. The units have been re-insulated with modern materials to meet new legislative requirements, being fitted with a heat pump plus bathroom and kitchen extractor fans. Security screens have been installed on the front and back doors and the exteriors of some villages have been repainted. Locks have been upgraded to a master key system in case of emergencies. To complete the upgrade programme, Council will install double-glazing in all units over the next five-years, beginning at Wallace Court in Cambridge during June. Council’s Palmer St complex in Te Awamutu has not been upgraded as its sale is due to be finalised soon, bought by Habitat for Humanity, Central North Island Ltd. The new owner plans to upgrade the complex. All Palmer St tenants will stay in the complex

following the sale. Waipā’s pensioner housing units are now only available to those aged 65 and over. They continue to be in demand with more than 30 people currently on a waiting list to be housed. Council plans to build more units over the next three years. The organisation mows tenants’ lawns and removes garden waste, as well as checking smoke alarms every

six months. Staff support tenants to liaise with government and health services, and are on call for support. Tenants pay market rent prices for the units, which is not subsidised by ratepayers. Under Council’s policy, after taking into account the government accommodation supplement, rents are no greater than 30 per cent of the gross amount of national superannuation.

blaze. Volunteer brigades from Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Pirongia and Otorohanga attended the scene, as well as Hamilton fire crews. State Highway 3 was temporarily closed while emergency crews extinguished the fire. Waikato Regional Council staff also attended the scene to help stop run-off from seeping into waterways. The incident at Inn Apiaries on West Rd, Ohaupo, occurred just after 11pm on Wednesday. The 10,000 square foot building stored 300-litre and 200-litre drums of raw honey, some of which had just been stored inside that day as it got ready for export. Around 100 tonnes of honey was inside, which had been manufactured over the past 18 months. The honey, as well as packing material and machinery, were destroyed in the blaze. Apiary owner Dave West said the tonnes of honey that had melted in the fire and seeped out of building would attract thousands of hungry bees. Fire fighters left dampening down hotspots on Thursday were given bee safety equipment to wear if needed. Bees were expected to collect honey from the area and take it back to their hives during the warmth of the day.

Student recognised during volunteer week

Malaika Kilian receives her certificate and jacket, pictured with, from left, Cambridge High School Head of PE Joel Baker, Sport Waikato District Co-ordinator Rebecca Foy, Cambridge High School Principal Greg Thornton and WILSS KiwiSport Leadership Development Officer Nicki Blake.

Cambridge High School student Malaika Kilian was presented with a special certificate and jacket by the Waikato Institute of Leisure and Sport Studies on April 1, during Student Volunteer Week, for her volunteer work with the organisation. She was thanked for taking time out to help others have great experiences in sport and physical activity. “Keep encouraging those you are helping, it’s a lot of fun and I get a huge amount of enjoyment out of it,” said Malaika, “it feels great afterwards and you gain a sense of achievement when it’s all over.” Malaika started the Waikato Institute for Leisure and Sport Studies KiwiSport Leadership programme in 2018 and has already completed over 100 hours. She has volunteered at several sporting events and was involved with a number of activities including coaching, umpiring, dance, triathlon, netball, athletics and pentathlon. Malaika said she most enjoys the feel-good factor one gets after volunteering, and loves giving back to sport and her community. She loves the great feedback she receives from parents too.

Take a spin with a wheelie bin Waipa District Council’s waste minimisation experts have been visiting local markets this month to give Waipā residents the chance to take a spin with one of Council’s new wheelie bins. Late last year Council confirmed its new kerbside recycling contract will see recycling crates replaced by two purposebuilt wheelie bins for each household: a 140-litre bin for glass bottles and jars (collected monthly) and a 240-litre bin for plastic, tins, cans, paper and cardboard (collected fortnightly). The new service kicks off from July 1. Another opportunity to try out the new wheelie bins will be available at the Cambridge Trash ’n’ Treasure Market this Sunday, April 14 on Victoria and Duke Streets. Council’s waste minimisation officer Sally Fraser said the markets let people who might be curious or concerned give the wheelie bins a test drive and ask any questions about the new service. “We’ve filled our sample wheelie bins with the average recycling for Waipā. For example, the mixed recycling wheelie bin has two weeks’ worth of paper, card, plastics, tins and cans. The glass one has four weeks of glass bottles and jars. “We want people to have a chance to move them around, feel the weight and see how they feel full of recycling,” she said. During the market this Sunday there will also be games to test recycling knowledge and spot prizes to be won. For more information about Council’s new wheelie bin service, visit waipadc.govt.nz/recycling.

CHS gets behind Gumboot Friday

Cambridge High School staff and students showed their support for Gumboot Friday last week. The initiative, organised by Mike King’s charity I Am Hope, aims to raise money to provide free counselling to children in New Zealand. Students wore gumboots in exchange for a gold coin donation, and enjoyed gumboot-related activities at lunch time including a popular gumboot toss. Nationwide, over $705,000 was raised through Gumboot Friday. Cambridge High School raised $545.

Paddle power at Lake Karapiro The New Zealand Dragon Boat Nationals returned to Karapiro over the weekend for two days of action-packed racing over Friday and Saturday. Clubs from around the country took part, competing in 200m, 500m and 2000m races, with boat crews up to 26 people including the drummer and sweep hand. The event was held at Karapiro in 2017, but was moved to Ashburton last year. It returned to Cambridge’s perfectly-shaped lake this year, providing an ideal environment for 2km racing. Racing kicked off under perfect conditions on Friday, whilst another national water sport event – the New Zealand Wakeboard Nationals – took place at the other end of the lake. High winds around 4am on Saturday threatened the event’s continuation into the weekend, but thankfully the water was • Nuts & bolts • Grinding discs calm enough for racing to get • Bearings & seals • Taps underway at 8am as scheduled. • Brass bushes • Drills Full results from the event • Trojan trailer parts • Total oil were due to be uploaded this • Welding rods • Brass fittings week at www.sporty.co.nz/ nzdragonboat. The event will return to Karapiro in 2020. Racing action will be back on at Lake Karapiro this weekend with the University Rowing Regatta taking place all day Saturday. The Karapiro 100k Flyer cycling event will also be starting and finishing on Maungatautari Road outside Mighty River Domain. And from Sunday onwards the North and South Island U18 Rowing Regatta will take place at the lake throughout next week, wrapping up on Saturday, April 20.

“We need more girls to stick in there, because a lot of people tend to drop out around 16 years old. I’m competing against people twice my age, it’s a weird division to be in, I’d love to have other girls my age riding,” she said. Fifty-three wakeboarders took part in the national event over the weekend, ranging from 7 to 54 years old. Tauranga’s Darren Bishop won the open men’s division.

Wakeboarder on top at nationals

Cambridge wakeboarder Morgan Haakma successfully defended her open women’s title for the first time at the New Zealand Wakeboarding National Champs held at Piarere over the weekend. The 22-year-old Cambridge resident was competing in the open women’s division for the second time, having won it last year, and reclaimed her title in stunning fashion. “Winning’s cool, but just landing my tricks, regardless of whether I win or lose, is all I’m really out there for, I’m real happy with that,” Morgan said.

New Zealand’s best - Tauranga’s Darren Bishop and Cambridge’s Morgan Haakma were named the open men’s and women’s winners at the New Zealand Wakeboarding National Championships at Piarere over the weekend.

The former Palmerston North Sacred Heart Girls College student has now won her division at the NZ Wakeboarding Nationals nine years in a row. She said she liked the competition because it gave her something to work towards during the season, a motivator to master new tricks. Unlike water skiing competitions, wakeboarding events only have one area of competition – tricks. Competitors have two passes (two boat runs from one side of the course to the other) where they attempt to pull off their best tricks. Those who fall off more than once are disqualified. “I’ve probably never been so nervous for a competition before,” Haakma said at the start of the event. “We’ve got a lot of new tricks in this competition, so I’ve just got to hopefully land on the one that counts. “There’s always something new to be working on and always something new to learn. “That feeling you get when you land a new trick is just the coolest feeling.” Morgan said the next-best thing to landing a new trick was watching her students do so. She coaches at Karapiro Lake, and hopes to encourage more young women to take up the sport.

FRIDAY APRIL 12, 2019

Wins all round for Leamington rugby Freshy Day – Saturday 6 April The whole day was a great success thanks to all the many people and business’ that donated to Freshy Day – a special mention to Monty and Welsh Dave who managed the day. Thanks to Matt Hicks for providing the sounds and PA system and to the many club members who worked hard on the day and in the lead up to the event. The total raised has exceeded all expectations and is over $10,000 (going towards the rehabilitation of club player Matt Kennedy, recovering from car accident). Senior B Playing Matamata in a replay of last year’s final (which Matamata won) on a day to honour one of the Senior B’s regulars Matt ‘Freshy’ Kennedy, there was no lacking in motivation. Matamata brought a strong challenge leading at halftime 17-22. Leamington rallied to win 27-22. Tries went to Chris Gillies (2), James Dunn, and Jarrod Allen Baker, plus two conversions to James Dunn and one penalty to Jarrod Allen Baker – who was also named Player of the Day.

The Leamington A team on their way to winning 24-17 over Matamata.

Senior A Matamata started strongly with a converted try to lead 7-0. Leamington defence was found wanting and Matamata capitalised to lead 12-7 at halftime. The competition was tight and the score levelled with 10 minutes to go, 17 all. Leamington found another gear and kept structure to score the winning try, final score 24-17. Try scorers were James Fraser, Drew Bootten, and Aaron Vercoe. Three converstions and one penalty to Regan Erueti. Player of the Day was Adin Bolton. Under 85kgs Leamington U85’s played Morrinsville at Campbell Park. The home side were the undeniable favourites, scoring 39 points in the first 30 minutes of the game. Leamington went over bang-on half time with a try to lock Ethan Simpson. Leamington pulled together defensively for a very strong second half, keeping Morrinsville on their own try line for

nearly the remaining 40 minutes, letting in two runaway tries from broken play. Final score 49-7. A huge improvement from the previous week against Marist. Leamington had two Players of the Day, with first five Jesse Warwick picking up one award and co-captain/number 8 Lewis Meerkerk getting the other. Regal Agriculture Under 21’s The colts travelled to Pirongia and made short work of the opposition, winning 70-5. Steven Nadan playing blindside was particularly impressive. Next week we travel to Hamilton to take on University. Thanks to our supporters and sponsors Cambridge Stud, Waipa Civil, 5 Stags, Collins and Sons and Regal Agriculture. This Saturday Leamington will host Pirongia B, 1pm kick off. A’s kick off 2.45pm. The under 85’s also have a home game against last year’s champs Melville, kick off 1pm. Hautapu run riot over University Premiers University were immediately under the pump after the whistle went, struggling to keep up with Hautapu’s intensity and speed of play. Before long Hautapu had raced ahead to a 21 point lead thanks to three well taken tries, with first five Coby Miln converting all three within the opening 14 minutes. University soon put together a few phases, striking back through a try of their own, with Hautapu immediately gathering the restart and scoring. Andrew Viane, who stepped into the number 8 jersey due to the skipper’s injury, delivered a player of the day performance with multiple barnstorming runs. The half ended much the way it started with Hautapu taking some further well work tries to lead 56-5

at the break. University came back from the break controlling both possession and territory in the opening 20 minutes, scoring a converted try. However as with the first half, the response was swift and brutal from Hautapu who began putting phases together, using the full width of the field to pile the misery on and finish off a dominant win, scoring with the last play of the day to tick over the 100 mark. It was a day that will be long remembered and spoken about by Hautapu supporters and one University will do well to forget about. Development Hautapu hosted University on Saturday, looking to win the game after two previous losses. University started out strong, putting pressure on Hautapu

for the first 15 minutes using their big forward pack. Hautapu sustained the onslaught, and an error by Uni saw Hautapu strike with a superb 70 metre try by Todd Silva, converted by Bodie. As the game progressed, Hautapu found gaps in the Uni defence, with tries by Bodie, Jordan and Cam. Hautapu led 26-0 at halftime. University opened the second half scoring with two tries in the first 10 minutes. Strong defence by Hautapu kept Uni at bay until the 25th minute when they got a converted try, however Hautapu did not panic and settled into their game. Gaps started to appear in the Uni defence which saw a brace of converted tries by the home team, final score being 54 - 17 to Hautapu. Golf days nets $15,000 Voss makes reserve A Cambridge counselling service has benefitted to the tune of $15,500 thanks to a golf tournament. Cambridge Lifeskills manager Sandy Wesford said young people in the community were in good hands and “so fortunate” to have a community that cares so much about their emotional and social wellbeing. The organisation provides support for 5 to 15-year olds who attend a Cambridge school. Its nine-hole Ambrose tournament at the Cambridge Golf Club attracted more than 100 players in 26 teams on March 27. Players represented social and business teams from both Cambridge and outside the town – and among the visitors was Marton based former All Black Sam Strahan, who made 45 appearances for his country from 1967 to 1973. New Zealander of the Year Mike King, a staunch supporter of the event, sent a video message in which he highlighted the

importance of Lifeskills in Cambridge. Money was raised via an auction and 30 businesses sponsored the event. The tournament was won by a narrow margin by a team of Roger and Sheryl McGlade and Richard and Suzanne Keesing who called themselves “Four Decades”. Runners up were the “Chicks with Sticks” - Raewyn Price, Kaye Donnelly, Marion Peterson and Jackie van der Poel Sandy Wesford said she was grateful and proud to live in a generous community which was prepared to help its most vulnerable. “Lifeskills are also thrilled to have our work endorsed by Mike King who has committed to assisting with some funds from the Gumboot Friday appeal. Mike has commended Lifeskills for the work we do and have been doing for 27 years here in Cambridge, which is so validating.” The money raised will go directly to funding additional counselling sessions.

Geoff Walker, Vivien Hall, Gaye Bezzant and Paul Fraser teamed up to support Cambridge Lifeskills.

Sam Voss was announced as a member of Rowing New Zealand’s elite team last week. She will join the women’s reserve team with Hannah Osborne, coached by James Coote. It follows a phenomenal performance by Sam at the 2018 World Rowing U23 Championships, where she took gold in the women’s single sculls. That achievement followed a severe ankle injury in April 2017, from which she made a remarkable recovery. The 2019 Rowing NZ Elite team was named on April 4 following a seven-day trial including erg testing and seat racing. The 51 strong team will remain at Lake Karapiro to train before departing overseas to contest the 2019 World Rowing Cup II in Poznan, Poland in June and World Rowing Cup III in Rotterdam, Netherlands in July. After that competition, New Zealand’s World Rowing Championships team will be announced. From there, the rowers could

qualify for Tokyo 2020. “We had a wake-up call in 2018 with our performances at the World Rowing Championships, but with our current athletes, returning athletes and depth of our U23 team, we have incredibly experienced

athletes paired with exciting new talent,” said Rowing NZ Chief Executive Simon Peterson. “This has given us both confidence and a new outlook heading into this year’s international season.’’ The elite team will depart for Europe in mid-June.

Husky man Yearbury climbs to the top By Andy McGechan, BikesportNZ.com

They’re mates off the track, but fierce rivals on it – Dylan Yearbury and Tom Buxton are almost inseparable on the enduro racing scene. Cambridge diesel mechanic Yearbury had to accept runnerup spot behind Helensville’s Buxton at the first round of seven in this year’s New Zealand Enduro Championship near Whangamata last month, but Husqvarna-mounted Yearbury had his revenge at round two at the weekend.

Their respective roles were reversed on the steep and treacherous forestry course at Moonshine, near Porirua, on Saturday as this time it was Yearbury who led the way through the timing zone at the end of the gruelling day. With results shared, it means Yearbury and Buxton are firstequal in the championship standings and both riders are now looking forward to continuing their scrap at round three of the series near Tokoroa on April 20. It will all really just be for bragging rights with these two individuals as they soon afterwards will head to Europe for a stint of international competition and they will have to drop out of the Kiwi series. “Tommy and I are both heading off to the Erzberg enduro in Austria at the end of May and then we go to the Red Bull Romaniacs enduro in Romania at the beginning of August,” said the 24-year-old Yearbury. “We will work as track managers at the Romaniacs event, but actually racing the Ezberg,” he explained. Hopefully their recent racing on the Kiwi domestic scene will turn out to have been an ideal warm-up for that adventure.

Yearbury took his Husqvarna FE250 to beat Buxton to the chequered flag by just 16 seconds on Saturday, although even a relatively short duration such as that can seem like a lifetime in the motorcycle racing world. Third overall on the premier AA course on Saturday was Wainuiomata’s Jake Whitaker (KTM 350XC-F), with Stratford’s Josh Hunger (Husqvarna TE300) and Whanganui’s Seth Reardon (Yamaha YZ250FX) completing the top five. In terms of the championship, Yearbury and Buxton jointly lead by 14 points from Whangamata’s Jason Davis (Husqvarna FE350), who finished eighth on Saturday, with Reardon just one point further back and Whitaker an additional point back in fifth spot overall. “I was feeling good on the bike and enjoyed the special tests at Moonshine,” said Yearbury. “I had no problems today and quite enjoyed the track. It was tight in places and hard work, but I liked it. It was cold and I couldn’t feel the fingers on my hand. Winter is finally here … for the Wellington region anyway. There is always room for improvement in my riding, but I’m looking forward to the next round near Tokoroa.”

Eighteen Cambridge trampers met at the Ngamuwahine Rd turn off on the Tauranga side of the Kaimais at 8.30 in the morning recently. The walk into the first stream crossing was shrouded in misty low cloud but improved as the morning went on. The stream crossing was not difficult but a bit of dampness on the rocks made things slippery and care needed to be taken. Morning tea followed on the banks of the stream before a steady climb through some good bush with interesting bird life. Bush robbins and tom tits where easily seen, and bellbirds, Tui and other birds were heard and spotted. Red flowering Rata vines could be spotted through the top canopy. The track junction with the Leland-O’Brien tram line was at a lovely open clearing where we had lunch. It was decided to return via a loop track, which was sign posted for 1 hour 40 minutes but took considerably longer. Challenges of rocks and roots, and a steep descent into and climb out of a second

stream made for a testing afternoon. Slippery conditions once again at the stream required care and team work. The last part of the walk was an easy track through regenerated bush and some pine forests back to the cars. We were out by 3pm just as the heavens opened up and made driving out in a blinding down pour another challenge. Well done drivers, all home safely.

Reds unbeaten after two rounds

CAMBRIDGE NEWS | 21

FRIDAY APRIL 12, 2019

By Josh Easby (abridged)

Cambridge are off to the best possible start to football’s Northern League after wrapping up their second win in as many games. The Reds beat Aucklanders Oratia United 1-0 in a tense affair at John Kerkhof Park on Saturday, one of only four clubs to remain unbeaten after two rounds of play in the Lotto NRFL second division. The capable visitors might have clawed a draw, but a couple of near misses and a match-winning save by Cambridge goalkeeper Patrick Steele put a stop to that. Last year’s top scorer Josh Clarkin took the lead in the 20th minute, turning his defender and coolly slotting the ball past ‘keeper Jonathan Mannes. In the 33rd minute, Oratia went close to an equaliser with a long shot that crashed the Cambridge crossbar. With half-time almost reached, Harry Wick headed off the Cambridge line to keep the visitors scoreless. The second half saw both teams battle for possession, but the speed and aggressive running by Reds’ wide players Callum MacLeod and Luke Stephenson kept the Oratia defenders busy. Goalkeeper Steele produced an outstanding save in the 73rd minute, steering a fierce shot past his post with an outstretched left hand. Cambridge supporters survived a nervous seven minutes of added time before referee Andrew Mitchell finally blew the closing whistle. This Saturday Cambridge will host the unbeaten Claudelands Rovers in a local derby. Meanwhile, the Cambridge reserves lost their match against Oratia United in the Lotto NRFL second division 6-0. the early game at John Kerkhof Park, Oratia raced to a 3-0 lead in the opening half-hour thanks to a hat-trick by Harry Cuthbert. The scoreline might have been worse but Oratia missed a penalty, meaning the sides went into the break with the Reds trailing by three goals. The second half started more evenly and Cambridge created a number of half-chances and won a series of corners. But the strong Oratia unit found a fourth goal on the hour through Cullen Morrow before Charlie Schiers grabbed two more in the last five minutes of the match. In other games, a strong first-half performance was key to Cambridge winning their local derby 3-1 against Matamata Swifts in the WaiBOP Championship match played at John Kerkhof Park. Striker Adam Brady struck twice, in the 12th and 23rd minutes, to give the home side the early advantage before the experienced Jason Szabo got the deftest of touches to score a third after 33 minutes. After the break, Matamata came back with a determined display and pulled a goal back to go home with a final result of 3-1 to the Reds. Cambridge’s Player of the Day was Jordan Silvester. The win compensates for Cambridge’s opening day 2-0 loss at Waikato Unicol. This weekend the side travels to Te Puke United. In Waikato Division 3, Cambridge lost 5-2 to Claudelands Rovers at John Kerkhof Park. Scorers for Cambridge were Jacob Bult and Player of the Day Paul Blackstock who scored from the penalty spot. In Waikato Division 4, Cambridge beat Te Awamutu 4-1 at home. Scorers for Cambridge were Cole van den Beuken (2), Andy Thomas and Nick Sickelmore.

Cambridge women lost their opening game of the Waikato women’s first division season in an end to end away-game against Matamata Swifts. Striker Astrid Howarth scored both Cambridge goals. Coach Andrew Taylor said the 4-2 score did not

reflect how close the game was with both goalkeepers seeing plenty of action. Player of the Day was Sophee Rapson-Jones. This Saturday, April 13 John Kerkhof Park will host seven senior and youth matches. Play kicks off at 12.30pm.

team at the school the week before. It was the first time in the school’s history that an international basketball team visited the campus, and the first time the girls played a non-New Zealand team. The game on April 2 against the Japanese national under 16 team, which will also be competing at the world champs, saw the visitors get off to a blistering start with four points quickly on the board. Fortunately, on the back of some solid defence and good shooting of their own, the St Peter’s girls managed to stem the tide and finish the first quarter in the lead by 21-12. The team began to make some progress thanks to key plays by Charlisse LegerWalker, Ella Bradley and Dominique Stephens. Tenacious defence from Grace McGirr and Waiata Jennings, great hustle by Alana Paewai and nice layup finishes and threepoint shots from Jayze Waihi boosted the St Peter’s lead

Cambridge rider Samantha Lissington (nee Felton) secured her second Forest Gate Trophy with victory in the CCI4* - S at the National One Day Championships hosted at the Kihikihi International Horse Trial over the weekend. Riding aboard the 2017 national one day champ Ricker Ridge Escada, Samantha was the first to go in the showjumping. Their lovely clear saw them secure fourth place on 47.2 penalty points and set the scene for an exciting

finale. Jumping in reverse order Monica Oakley (Auckland) was cool as a cucumber to ride the aptly named Acrobat clear and remain on her score of 46.1 for third place. FRIDAY APRIL 12, 2019

Movies cannabis products. They use it to make medicine for everything from epilepsy to cancer, in the face of opposition from the authorities, the sheriff and local cartels. Newsweek claimed in August 2016 that legal cannabis could be the first billion-dollar industry not dominated by men; their leader Sister Kate could well be the first woman to break that barrier. “The timeliness of this project, along with the poignant and inspiring story of Sister Kate made this a film we could not pass up. This film is an honest look at the true story of Sister Kate, her life and her company The Sisters of the Valley. One of the few movies you quickly want to watch again. Be in to win a double pass to the film (2 to give away), or a Hemp Bag. Simply email info@tivolicinema.co.nz with Breaking habits in the subject line. Winners will be notified by email and will be posted on our notice board on 20th April. Also prizes to be won on Facebook.
