Security in your hands By Sophie Iremonger

Cambridge businesses are becoming more vigilant as the town’s population continues to grow and security can be in the palm of their hands.

In the wake of burglaries, ramraids and vandalism shop owners are now having to look at new ways to protect their businesses. The Waikato District Health Board is reviewing the security of its Leamington site after vandals slashed tyres on six cars used by nurses and a thief returned on April 23 to steal a tyre off another vehicle. On the same night a shot was fired through the window at BP Leamington. Stirling Sports suffered its fifth ramraid burglary in less than three years in late March, leaving the owner questioning the future of the business. The spate in crime has left several business owners wondering, what can be done to counter the problem. “You’ve got to stop them before they get to you,” said Justin Fisher, general manager of Watchu Security in Cambridge. Fisher says technology which sends video images to the devices of business and home owners is simple to install and effective. He said the quality of video has also improved in recent years – making identifying thieves easier. And the cost of installing the equipment can be less than the value of goods taken in a burglary. Most security companies can install a simple two-camera system starting at around $2000. Asked how shop keepers could protect their building from ramraids, Fisher said measures like roller-bars could only do so much. “Nothing is going to stop a vehicle coming at you, unless you do something on the kerb side.” Beyond street barriers, Fisher said the next-best step for business owners was to have an alarm system and cameras operating. “Cameras won’t stop them from doing it, but at least you’re much more likely to get a conviction. “It’s about looking after yourself,” he explained. “You’re out there on your own, the police aren’t going to park outside and wait for burglars to come, you’ve got to do your best to defer and deter.” The company has its own 10-camera system operating at its Gillies Street premises which helps demonstrate what the technology can do. The system captures the plate of every car which drives by, and can be accessed remotely through a smartphone. He has a similar system set up outside his Cambridge home, and even managed to capture an image of a car associated with an attempted abduction near Cambridge East School in 2017.

Cambridge security expert Justin Fisher shows some of the surveillance technology available to businesses and homeowners.

valuables. • Make an inventory of valuables in your household and store it somewhere other than your home, such as in a safe deposit box. • When on holiday, leave a car in your driveway or arrange for a neighbour to keep a car there and move it around from time to time. • Prune overgrown trees and shrubs to eliminate hiding places for intruders. • Many garage door openers respond to common codes, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions to program yours with a unique code no burglar’s opener will match. • Thieves always look in mailboxes, under doormats and above doorways for keys. Don’t make it easy for them to get into your home. • Don’t put your name or address on your key ring, because it might lead a thief right to your door with key in hand. • Keep ladders locked away or out of sight. • Don’t put your rubbish out early if you are going away, ask a neighbour to do it on the usual day. • Keep valuables like laptop, cameras, MP3 players out of sight. • Ensure empty boxes placed outside for recycling don’t advertise the fact you have just bought something of value i.e. TV, stereo, or electrical items. Cut these boxes down so you aren’t giving away details of anything that may be worth stealing. • Beware of anyone loitering in the area and any unfamiliar vehicles - record any details if you are suspicious and/or call the police.

an alarm, deadbolts, and get to know their neighbours at the very least. “That one’s free, and you might even get some free baking out of it.” Items on the market even allow homeowners to have their lounge lights turned on for a few hours in the evening while they’re away. And camera systems can be checked, and even turned on, from smartphones or laptops. “All the technology is out there and a lot of it is for the residential market. “You’ve got to look after yourself, forget about what the Police are doing, because by the time you’re calling the cops you’ve already been burgled.”

Watchu Security recommended homeowners consider the following security tips.

• Secure sliding glass doors, add a bolt lock or use a “rod” to block the door closed. • Use bars to secure basement or garage doors and add bars to basement windows. • According to statistics, the most common time for burglary is between 8am and noon, so get in the habit of locking all doors and windows whenever you go out. • Invest in high-quality, name-brand deadbolt locks for all exterior doors. • If you have a double-cylinder deadbolt that is operated by a key both inside and out, keep the key near the door so every family member can find it and exit quickly in case of fire. • Alarm systems are an effective deterrent. Nine out of ten convicted burglars agree they would avoid a house protected by an alarm system. Security system decals and signs are also an effective deterrent. • Never leave an answering machine message indicating you’re not at home. • Use timers to turn lights, televisions and sound systems on and off at different times to give your home a “lived-in look” when you are out. • Install motion-detecting outdoor floodlights around your home. Remember to mount them high enough to prevent intruders from disabling them. • Don’t let mail, newspapers or flyers accumulate while you’re away, tipping off criminals. • Use a UV pen to mark an ID number, like your driver’s license number, on

region. “Most businesses are either looking at it or have got it,” he said. Fisher recommended in the case of the DHB cars being vandalised, to put the cars together in a well-lit yard with locked security fencing and CCTV. For the BP case, it was a bit trickier, he said. “They could upgrade their cameras if need be, maybe even upgrade to plasma glass, but that’s extremely expensive. Unfortunately we live in a world of crazies and sometimes you just can’t stop them. All you can do is put yourself in the best possible protective place.” He recommended homeowners install

A group of Cambridge artists have had had a significant confidence boost after the success of their art exhibition last weekend. The exhibition in St Andrews Church Hall, Cambridge, saw five closet artists, Henriette Mathiesen, Terry White, John White, Susan Rickard and Cara Fotofili come together to showcase over 80 paintings and prints. Henriette said the exhibition was a massive success. On opening night more than 100 people, including members from the

Cambridge Society of Arts, attended. “We had overwhelming compliments from members of the art society council on the calibre of art and the undertaking of an exhibition,” said Henriette. They were also all invited to exhibit at the up and coming Art Attack exhibition to be held on September 7 and 8 in the town hall. Throughout the weekend the group sold 16 originals, had orders for four prints and received eight requests for commissions. Terry White, 84, would normally store his paintings away in a cupboard but for

this event he decided to bring them out. His son John White was also there, and he says he never imagined that he would get to be a part of an exhibition with his father. The success of the exhibition has resulted in the artists deciding to make it an annual event and has inspired several other “closet” painters to start thinking about putting their work out for the public to see. “The public is already asking us for another exhibition, so I think we’ll make it an annual event,” said Henriette.

Tapas bar closure blindsides community By Viv Posselt

A Cambridge tapas bar is sending mixed messages to clients – announcing initially that “this is the end” then posting a note to say it will open soon. The sudden closure of Pony Restaurant and Bar at the start of the Easter weekend has left some staffers confused, angry and out of pocket. They told Cambridge News that a new menu had been prepared just days before the closure, and food purchased to cover Easter weekend requirements. “There was no sign that this was coming,” said Aliesha Henderson, who was rostered on for Good Friday and came in only to find no-one there. She contacted manager Gerard ‘Ged’ Mooney, who directed her to a Facebook message posted by Pony owner Matt Cooper earlier in the day, declaring the business closed and adding, “sorry that it has to be done like this”. Matt Cooper has declined to comment. Jacob Norling, a chef who put in many hours at Matt’s side in the kitchen and who had put in for leave over Easter, was equally stunned. “Everything seemed normal that week. We updated the menu on the Tuesday and ordered food in for the long weekend.” It is understood Pony went into liquidation, but news around the traps also suggests it has been purchased by another owner. A second notice was posted in the bar window this week, saying Pony would be coming back soon and apologising for the inconvenience. Both Aliesha and Jacob are angry at the way it happened,

Pony’s then owner, Matt Cooper, put this notice up at the start of the Easter weekend.

and say while they have been paid for their final working week, they are still owed holiday pay. “We have worked our butts off for Pony, and this is what happens,” said Aliesha. “I’m really angry. At the end of the day, we have bills to pay as well.” Gerard was also blindsided by the move, unaware of impending closure until he picked up the Facebook message on Good Friday morning - despite having been at the bar with a group on the Thursday evening. His appointment this year to a February 14 start as Pony’s new restaurant manager brought a flurry of excitement to the bar’s Facebook page, with followers welcoming his 20 years’ experience as manager of the Auckland restaurant, Sails. He also supplied wine to Pony through his contacts and directed other suppliers to the tapas bar. “We moved down here for a change in lifestyle, but I was only in the place for eight weeks before this happened.” Gerard, who is now doing part-time work at other local

outlets, said he hoped people might still get paid out through the liquidators, but he wasn’t certain how news of a new owner might affect that. He said he had great respect for Matt as a chef, and they had become friends. “But I’ve seen him just once since Pony closed, and that was behind the restaurant very briefly. I asked him for the liquidator’s number, but in the end got it through someone else.” Cambridge was alerted to Pony’s closure through the first Easter note from Matt Cooper, oddly placed alongside the Easter opening hours. It said: “To all my loyal customers, friends & Pony family … I thank you for all your support, good cheer, great conversation & for making Pony the great little tapas bar it was!!! I have fought hard & given everything to stay afloat, but this is the end! If you don’t shop locally small businesses like this won’t survive. Ciao for now, Matt.” Gerard said he had seen nothing to suggest Cambridge didn’t support its local businesses.

Making the disabled go the extra mile… By Steph Bell-Jenkins

Heather Brand is frustrated by the continuing abuse of Cambridge’s mobility parking spaces. She has Parkinson’s Disease and her condition leaves her unable to walk at times, and she must park close to shops as a consequence. “Sometimes I need to give myself a dose of medication that’s absorbed rapidly and enables me to get back to my car, so my park needs to be close to where I’m going,” she said. Heather visits town most weekdays and sees able-bodied drivers misusing the parks “about once every second day”. “Sometimes we just can’t get in to do our jobs and shopping and things like that, so we just go home again,” she said. She lists repeat offenders as food delivery companies, courier drivers and people towing trailers. “Guys just park and when you say to them, this is a disability park, they say oh I’m just going to do deliveries, I’ll be five minutes.” Cambridge man Aaron Ure, who has spine and nervous system issues following a workplace injury, shares Heather’s frustrations. Aaron visits town about once a week and can’t find a mobility park about half the time because able-bodied drivers are using them. On “a bad day”, just walking the length of Victoria St using his walking frame or crutches can be “really exhausting and painful” for him. “Some days that block can be the longest thing you’ve ever done if you’re

Drivers who ignore mobility signs are upsetting other drivers – and risking a fine.

tired and sore,” he said. “I’m only 57 – I’m young – but I think of some of the older folk; it’s so exhausting for me, for you it must just seem like an endless street with nowhere to park and nowhere to sit.” CCS Disability Action central region access coordinator Raewyn Hailes said the abuse of mobility parking spaces was “a massive problem” across New Zealand. Her organisation previously lobbied successfully to have the fine for misusing mobility parks raised from $40 to $150, but saw no change in driver behaviour. It has developed an app, Access Aware, that allows users to report mobility park abuse to councils in live time. Statistics gathered will be used to lobby the Government on legislative change to make penalties more severe. The organisation would like to roll the app out nationwide and is keen to talk to Waipa District Council about introducing it here.

Waipa District Council’s road corridor manager Bryan Hudson said council had issued 13 infringement notices since 1 January 2018 to those caught using mobility parks without a permit. “The level of parking fines would suggest to us that abuse of mobility car parks is not wide spread,” he said. “That’s not to say it doesn’t happen – it’s just not reflected in the statistics.” He encouraged residents to report mobility park abuse by taking a photo or jotting down the vehicle’s registration and the time and calling council immediately. “We are more than happy to take enforcement action if we know about it.” Council is preparing a long-term parking strategy and is working with the Chamber of Commerce and other stakeholders on this. In Cambridge, 1000 people hold mobility parking permits. The permits must be displayed on their vehicle’s dashboard or hung from the rear view mirror.

Ann’s fibre slice a winner

By Steph Bell-Jenkins

Cambridge fibre artist Ann Bell has won the supreme award at this year’s national Creative Fibre exhibition. “The festival is held every two years and I don’t remember the last time a Cambridge person won it and I’ve been in the society over 20 years,” said Cambridge Creative Fibre member Anne Curtis, who also won three awards at the Palmerston North meet. “It’s fairly prestigious in our world.” Ann’s hand-woven wall hanging, Strata, is an artistic imagining of a slice through the earth’s geological layers. “Everyone’s asking what does it mean and what’s it about?” said the 81-year-old, who has never had any formal art training. “But stuff doesn’t have to mean anything; it’s in the eye of the beholder, art. I think all this great meaningful stuff is not my scene at all. I make it and if somebody likes it that’s great.” Fusing metal, wire and cellulose with more traditional fibres, the copper-hued work swerves distinctly into the realm of the unconventional. “It’s got sheet copper, copper ribbon and copper wire recycled from old TVs, a few strips of film negative, strips of silk that I dyed, fleece wool and yarn that I’ve spun with fine copper wire and Mulberry tree bark that I dyed and painted,” Ann said. “I think it stood out as being different. It was certainly different to the normal prizes.” It was so unconventional she wasn’t going to enter into the exhibition. “But then I read that an embroidery tutor would be taking a class talking about metal and metal thread and Angelina fibre, and I thought oh, I’ll put my piece in because it’s got some of those things in it,” she said. “I was never more surprised than to actually get it accepted and to win a prize was a big bonus as well.” Ann began working on the wall-hanging about two months ago, after unearthing an old “box of stuff” left over from a 2009 exhibition.

“So, I found this box with all these bits of stuff – because if you’re like me you don’t throw it out, you might need it, and it’s not trash or rubbish, it’s stuff – and created that wall hanging utilising all the skills I’ve had over the years.” Strata exposes a cross-section of Ann’s own rich artistic heritage, illuminating the delicious tones and textures of her creativity, exposing her love of experimentation and showcasing techniques consolidated over the eight decades of her life. It’s all layered over the basic skills she learnt as a child growing up in Gisborne during the war years – knitting, embroidery, sewing her own clothes – as a matter of necessity “One of my earliest memories is learning to knit using meat skewers as knitting needles,” she said. “Everything was in pretty short supply so we made the most of what was available.” She has always loved the feel of different fibres, playing, working with her hands. “I just loved creating shapes and things,” she said. “I can remember making houses out of shoeboxes and matchboxes, so I was always creating.” After leaving school Ann moved to Dunedin, qualified as a physiotherapist and met her future husband. The pair travelled overseas together and moved back to Hamilton in 1970 to start a family. When their first baby arrived, Ann began searching for a new hobby and discovered spinning. “It wasn’t quite so easy to just go out and work like it is now,” she said. “And so I got my first spinning wheel...and from there I started creating knitting and doing stuff. Then I started to learn to weave and I loved doing wall hangings.” In about 1998 she took a bookmaking class, loved it, and later moved into book art and sculptural work with paper, which she’s been doing and teaching ever since. Ann’s not sure how she will spend her $2000 prize money, but she may splash out on a fancy frying pan. Her next goal? “Oh wake up tomorrow morning and see what I can do, yeah,” the octogenarian said. “When you get to my age it’s always a bonus to wake up Ann Bell with her award winning work. and to be able to go for a walk!”

Homes for all after Kaimanawa muster

The Kaimanawa muster at the end of April was a huge success, with all the 70 horses taken from the wild being rehomed. Cambridge showjumper Georgia Bouzaid, a sponsored Kaimanawa rider and owner of Kaimanawa horse Redcliff’s Bill, said she was thrilled with the result of this year’s muster. “It is such a great outcome for these special horses, and I am so excited to watch the progress with them over the next few months,” said Georgia. The 16-year-old St Peter’s student and her horse Bill, as they call him at home, came to Cambridge just over a year and a half ago after her mum, Kelly Bouzaid, decided to move to a more central position for competitions due to their success. Originally the pair lived on Waiheke Island but now they live in a quiet country home in Kaipaki. Together the pair continued to the top of the show jumping circuit placing at nearly every weekend competition since September

and winning the six bars at the Taupo Christmas Classic and Equidays. “He’s been so consistent with me over the time that I’ve had him, you always feel safe on him, you know that he’s going to go out there and he’s not going to give up on you, he really wants to do it,” said Georgia. Since being rehomed from the wild, Bill has been trained by Kate Hewlett for the first Stallion Challenge at Equidays in 2014. His performance and attitude saw him become the ambassador for the brand. Kaimanawa Heritage Horses chairperson, Kimber Brown, says this year’s muster horses were healthy, of good size and weight. “It was brilliant, everyone was left happy and it was a really nice way to end the muster,” said Brown. A total of 15 stallions will also go on to work with professional trainers who will tame and train them to eventually take part in the Freedom to Friendship class at Equidays, formerly known as the Stallion Challenge.

Community board rallying for licence testing

Cambridge Community Board report by Mike Pettit, Chairperson

At our recent meeting we enjoyed a presentation from the Cambridge Tree Trust who do an amazing job of beautifying our town. Congratulations also to all those that turned out for the Anzac Dawn or Civic Service held on April 25. An excellent turn out on a foggy Waikato morning. Acknowledgement goes to the CCB sub-committee in partnership with the RSA that organise these services. We have been pushing the past two years for NZTA to reinstate the practical drivers licence test back into Cambridge. We passed a fresh resolution at the May meeting to reassert pressure on them to see common sense and have this option available for

Cambridge residents. We have our upcoming Rural Hall tours organised, with visits on Saturday 11 May to: Horahora 9.30am, Maungatautari 10.45am and Monavale 12pm. Saturday 18 May sees us visit: Whitehall 9.30am, Te Miro 10.45am and Fencourt 12pm. We also look forward to being part of the Goodwood School new bike track opening at 1pm. We commend council on the recent work completed around Lake Te Ko Utu including the upgrade of the Camellia Track, retaining on sections of the Ferguson Track and some gravelling. Drains around the walking track will be cleared after the leaf fall with further gravelling taking place.

Cambridge building statistics again looked buoyant for the month of March with 28 new house dwellings, averaging $496,658 each, 14 alterations totalling $1,365,000, with the total value of all consent types in Cambridge being $17,631,553. The Maungatautari Ward had four house dwellings totalling $2,096,000 and total consents valuing $2,489,208. At the recent New Zealand Community Board Conference, the CCB picked up two accolades. The first being the Engaging Communities Award for the Armistice Day events that took place over Armistice weekend last November and we also picked up the Supreme Award on the night for the same project. A huge acknowledgement must go to the Armistice Committee who organise events at Lake Karapiro and also those involved in organising the service and events that took place in town over that weekend. One of the gems I picked up from the conference was around democracy, which resonated with me as elections are looming. Giving a lot for shooting victim By Caitlan Johnston

Donations for the man shot in a Karapiro café on Anzac Day have topped $5000. Jim Zheng has been moved from Waikato Hospital to an Auckland rehabilitation facility to continue his recovery. The man who allegedly shot him in the head, a 67-year-old from Leamington, has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He has been granted interim name suppression and was due back in court this week. A Givealittle page in the name of “Warwick, Angela, Simone & Jack Hill-Rennie” says the shooting “wasn’t a hate crime or

racism, it wasn’t even attempted burglary”. It says the Karapiro Café and Giftshop is “Cindy and Jim’s” pride and joy and seeks support for the victim’s daughter Lily. Before this edition went to press the page had attracted pledges of just over $5000 from 102 donors. The café has been shut since the attack and a sign on the door said Mr Zheng was recovering well and that “given his state and hospitalisation, he is somewhat of a medical miracle”. The sign does not indicate when the café will reopen. In the most recent update on the Givealittle page, thanks is given to those who have shown their support. “For Jim, his journey to recovery is really only just beginning. Thank you so much again for being a part of it,” reads the page.

Cambridge schools support speed drops By Sophie Iremonger

Cambridge principals have welcomed confirmation speed limits outside Cambridge schools will be reduced this year, along with over 200 speed changes across the district. Waipā District Council proposed the speed limit changes in February, following engagement with the public on road safety last August. The most significant changes will see the Cambridge town centre limit drop to 40km/h, and significant speed changes outside schools. Council released its public feedback results last week, revealing that 84 per cent of the 578 Waipa residents who responded to the proposal supported the speed changes. Councillors will now hear verbal submissions on the bylaw in June before it is formally adopted by Council in July. From there normal speed signs will be updated within four to six weeks, and electronic speed signs will take two to three months.

The changes mean all schools in town will go from 50km/h to 40km/h – reducing the chance of fatality by 55 percent when it comes to being hit by a car. A pedestrian hit by a vehicle travelling at 50km/h has an 85% chance of fatality, and a pedestrian hit at 40km/h has a 30% chance of fatality. “I’m very happy,” Cambridge Primary School (CPS) principal Mike Pettit said of the result. “With relatively narrow roads once cars are parked on the sides, it makes perfect sense. The children, parents and staff at CPS certainly see it as a potential injury or life saver.” “It is about safety for our students and we have a lot of students walking and riding to and from school,” said Greg Thornton, Cambridge High School principal. “Slower traffic will increase reaction times and the ability to react to student behaviour.” Cambridge Middle School’s acting principal Tagget Christophersen said any step in ensuring students got home safely was a positive outcome.

Cambridge Middle School is also set to get a new kea crossing – monitored by students - outside the school as part of Council’s additional plans to improve roads, pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes around the district. Widening work is planned for Maungatautari Road, east of Mighty River Domain, and a new intersection is planned for the Hanlin Rd turn off from Cambridge Rd.

Hanlin Rd, outside St Peter’s School, will also reduce from 100km/h to 30km/h as part of the new speed changes. In fact speed limits outside all rural schools will reduce by at least 20 percent. The speed limit outside Horahora School and Roto-o-rangi School will go from 100km/h to 60km/h, Kaipaki School will go from 100km/h to 80km/h, and Te Miro School will go from 70km/h to 60km/h.

Cambridge Primary School’s principal Mike Pettit says students will be safer when new speed limits are introduced.

The history of the Lake Karāpiro area during the New Zealand Land Wars will be one of several Waipa district stories told at the new Te Ara Wai museum – an exhibition, cultural and information centre which will be built in Te Awamutu with a strong focus on the New Zealand Land Wars. “There’s a of work to be done but with community support and willingness, we can make Te Ara Wai something absolutely incredible,” said Te Awamutu Museum exhibitions co-ordinator Henriata Nicholas. “This is about talking about and learning about our shared past and what happened right here, right on our doorstep,” added Te Awamutu Community Board chair Gary Derbyshire. “People need to understand where New Zealand has come from. People of my generation simply weren’t taught about the Land Wars and what they meant.” The pair said the timing is right for a discovery centre and museum with a strong focus on New Zealand history. Educators across New Zealand, including teachers in Waipā, are calling for more emphasis on the New Zealand Land Wars in school. Already schools from well outside the district travel here to visit battle sites and learn what happened. Historic battle sites within Waipā include Hingakākā, Mātakitaki, O-Rākau and Rangiaowhia and Karāpiro. The combined discovery centre and museum – dubbed a “mini Te Papa” by Gary – will sit alongside the Te Awamutu library. It will replace the existing museum and act as the hub

Ground-breaking drone technology has changed the future of leak detection in Cambridge. A trial project led by Waipa District Council’s water services team has used a drone fitted with a thermal imaging

The second survey, carried out last month, uncovered two further leaks due to failures in the pipe. It was conducted at 6am when the ground temperature was cooler than the water and achieved clearer results. “The trial needs further tweaking but has the potential to save hundreds of litres of water,” Hale said. George takes Pro Box title at Karapiro By Benjamin Watt

Cairo George made a triumphant return to a New Zealand ring last weekend after a 19-month absence. The Hamilton boxer scored a unanimous points win over James Torres to pick up the vacant Pro Box Pacific Super Lightweight title at the Sir Don Rowlands Event centre in Lake Karapiro. George, 28, had not fought in New Zealand since 2017 due to commitments with overseas

promoters and his previous outing was a second-round knockout win over Gusti Elnino in Australia late last year. Australia Torres carved out a successful kickboxing record before breaking a leg and retiring. He then returned to the ring as an amateur boxer before turning pro. His record dropped to two wins and four defeats with one draw. The main event of the evening wrapped up an outstanding night of boxing organised by Nigel Elliot.

Tokoroa based Quintin Myburgh, boxing with a prosthetic limb, Sam Hilbers.

Cairo was constantly the aggressor, landing good punches and showing good fitness. Torres was floored in the third round but showed he was game and had good defensive skills. Cairo, though, was always in command and allowed himself some showboating late on. One judge gave him all 10 rounds, the other two had it 9-1. Cairo told the audience postfight he would next fight in June at a Manny Pacquiao promoted event. His opponent is yet to be announced but it is confirmed that it will be for a major WBO regional title. The pro-corporate fight night was sold out, and among those present were heavyweight Alrie Meleisea, ranked 10 by the WBA, middleweight Gunnar Jackson and former Muay Thai world champion John Conway. The first pro event of the night featured two Waikato heavyweight women. Former national title challenger Ashley Campbell scored a majority win over New Zealand Amateur champion Dianne Beazley, who made her professional debut. The four round fight was entertaining, and both fighters were up for a rematch in the afterbout talks. Auckland’s Alex Va made short work of Taranaki heavyweight Graeme Dodd. after their man was knocked down midway through the first round. The corporate boxer spent 12 weeks training leading up to this event and their training showed. It was a stacked card with 16 corporate fights and one of note was Quintin Myburgh’s win over Sam Hilbers. Myburgh has a prosthetic leg and against an aggressive Hilbers

showed excellent defensive skills. He made Hilbers swing and miss regularly. Elliot announced after the event that he would return to the Sir Don Rowlands Event centre in August for small boxing show, copromoting with Dion McNaby. The fights on the night will be available on line at the Gladrap Channel on YouTube.

Rugby – it’s a ripper

Junior winter sport has kicked off, and in Cambridge hundreds of youngsters spent Saturday morning chasing oval and round balls. For Rhys Beare a highlight was the magic moment when, ball in hand and the defensive line broken, he saw a clear path to the try line. Steph Bell-Jenkins caught the moment –

and the subsequent run to the line and a conveniently early dive which enabled a nice slide across the try line. Cambridge News will seek to make space available through the season to show off the efforts of our youngsters – and you can help. Send your best pics to us. It might be the sharing of the

oranges, the proud five-year- old player of the day or the celebration of a great effort. We’ll do our best to use the best off the bunch. Your picture should have caption details telling us who is in the the picture and what team and what competition they are in. Send it to roy@roypilottpr.com and in the subject line write junior sports pictures.

It’s try time for Leamington’s Rhys Beare, who finishes with aplomb. Rhys finished the day with a brace of tries.

Riders go to extremes By Andy McGechan

It could possibly be listed as a new extreme sport – because the 2019 edition of the New Zealand Miniature TT Championships at Taupiri over the weekend was extreme in so many ways. Cambridge rider Jarred Hannon was among the winners, clearly winning the 85cc 13-16 year class. Both days started off with chilly conditions and dense fog, visibility reduced to just 30 or 40 metres, but this cleared by mid-morning on both Saturday and Sunday and then the days rapidly heated up, warm jackets traded in for sunscreen and wide-brimmed hats. While the weather traversed both extremes, the racing speeds achieved by the bike racers and the excitement levels reached were extreme too at the Kawasaki-sponsored event, which was jointly run by the Huntly and Patetonga motorcycle clubs. The pristine grassland track allowed the riders to reach eye-watering speeds, the two-day event near Huntly pushing the racers to their limits as the mostly flat grassland paddock became

rougher with each successive race and, despite the terrain’s largely placid and innocuous nature, it still required plenty of fitness and tons of respect from the competitors. With riders almost equal in the horsepower stakes, it was the riders who started fastest and braked latest who benefitted most and the key individuals who exhibited those skills the most included former national motocross champions Kayne Lamont, David Furze, Mitch Rowe and daughter Mikayla Rowe, just-crowned national junior 250cc motocross champion Jack Dunlop and current national ATV (quad bike) champion Camo Keegan. Hamilton’s Lamont won both the MX1 and MX2 categories at Taupiri, while New Plymouth’s Mitch Rowe won the over-45 years veterans’ class title and also the Classic pre2000 bike title, while his Pukekohe-based daughter Mikayla won the women’s title; New Plymouth’s Furze won the enduro class title; Pukekawa’s Dunlop topped the junior 14-16 year’s 250cc class and Stratford’s Keegan won the premier ATV crown. Other title winners were Albany’s Joseph Andrell

Roberts (women’s class); Te Puke’s Dion Steiner (veterans’ 35-44 years class); Auckland’s Mark Kiely (premier ATV class) and Stratford’s Nicola Reid (ATV veterans’ class). “It was a great couple of days of racing. We had holdups with the fog making things difficult, but it all turned out really well in the end,” said the Motorcycling New Zealand steward for the event, Stuart McCulloch. “I think the organisers

Impressive performances were also seen from the individuals who respectively

finished runners-up, each of them keeping the eventual champions honest, and these riders included Te Puke’s Tyler Steiner (in the MX1 class); Hamilton’s Reef Wheki (MX2); Napierbased Wairoa rider Tommy Watts (in the 125cc class); Ngatea’s Cole Dalley (junior 14-16 years’ 250cc class); Taupo’s Wil Yeoman (junior 12-16 years’ 125cc); Paeroa’s Ashton Whyte (junior 13-16 years’ 85cc class); Pukekohe’s Tyler Brown (junior 12-16 125cc class); Waitoki’s Troy Holmes (junior 8-12 years’ 85cc class); Hamilton’s Aime

have done a great job. Running events such as these is never easy, but they made a superb effort. “And a massive thanks also to Kawasaki New Zealand for making it possible with their sponsorship of the event. “The racing has been spectacular and I particularly enjoyed watching the mini riders scooting around. They are, afterall, the future of our sport, he said.

Four young Cambridge cyclists have been announced as members of a 20-strong team set to contest the under-19 division of the Oceania Track Cycling Championships in October. Mya Anderson, Jack Carswell, Reuben Webster and Hamish Coltman will take on the best from Australia and the Pacific in the four-day competition at Invercargill’s SIT Zero Fees velodrome. Mya and Reuben have already racked up valuable experience training with the Waikato Bay of Plenty Performance Hub, and were part of the national team that contested the 2018 Oceania track championships in Adelaide. Jack Carswell is sure to put on a stellar performance too, having won five titles at the recent Age Group Track National Championships. The four teenage riders will be joined by New Zealand’s elite cyclists at the competition running October 16-19.

In the Premiers, Hautapu rattled up 88 and 80 in A and B grade games at Te Awamutu Sports while Fraser Tech notched 59 and 45 in A and B grade wins in Taupiri. No one had it harder than Huntly College Old Boys, whose Division 1 A team lost 127-5 at home to United Matamata Sports after the Division 1 B game finished 112-0 to the visitors. Hautapu stand alone at the top of the Waikato’s premier club table, eight clear after second placed Otorohanga lost to Hamilton Marist. Leamington is one of four clubs with six wins from seven at the top of the Division 1 table after they all won at the weekend.

FRIDAY MAY 10, 2019

Competition leaders hit TA for 80 in favour of the home side and they began a siege on the Hautapu try line. Hautapu, though showed a much-improved defensive effort, ably led by openside Mitch Jacobson, to keep the hosts out. After some well taken exits, Hautapu were once again back on attack and pressurising the TA line. TA were not going to give up without a fight and a loose pass was intercepted which in turn led to an entertaining foot race. A successful touchline conversion saw TA up on the board and with a sliver of hope. However, from there on it was one-way traffic, as Hautapu showed maturity beyond many of their years to ably control the game while keeping the hosts constantly under pressure. The competition within the Hautapu squad is clearly

fierce as the reserves who came on all put their hands up in what was ultimately a very dominant performance. TA though did have the final say, scoring a hard worked and much deserved try with time up on the clock. Final score 12-80 to the visitors. TA will be left licking their wounds and fighting hard to remain in the second round of the competition.

For Hautapu it was job done and they move forward looking to improve upon their performance with two games remaining in the first round against Taupiri (away) and Morrinsville at home on the May 18 for the final game of round one. The primary goal will be two more victories to end top of the table with the secondary objective of testing the depth of their squad

It’s a wrap… a Te Awamutu move comes up against a Hautapu brick wall comprising, from left, Josh Morrison (16), Andrew Viane and Peni Rokoduguni.

heading into the main round of the Breweries Shield competition. The reserves were also dominant in Te Awamutu. Hautapu started well, the attacking and defensive effort was strong from the start and never let up. That led to a brace of tries for Hautapu and the theme continued through to the second half for a resounding win 86–0, just rewards for a fine team effort.

The scene was set for an entertaining day of rugby at Te Awamutu Sports Rugby club as they hosted their sponsor’s days as well as the top of the table Hautapu side. From the kickoff it was apparent why Hautapu are the form side in the competition, they regathered their own kick off and went straight to work testing the home side’s defence. It was not long before the expectant crowd saw the first tries of the game as Hautapu raced to a 21-point lead. The men from TA showed that they are men of substance, stringing together a few phases, dominating both territory and possession to frustrate the log leaders. This saw the penalty count turn

“Old timers” to head back to Leamington Leamington will play host to its “old timers” and sponsors when the Senior As take on Southern United in a key Division 1 game tomorrow. Leamington is one of four teams who have a significant break on the field – Southern is another. The Senior A team played enterprising rugby last weekend to dominate Te Rapa 41-7. The team chalked up first half tries to Drew Bootten, Cam Collins and Nick Lyall and led 19-0 at half time. The dominance continued with a further three tries, including one to player of the day Regan Eureti, and others to Dylan Mullaney and Shaye Morris. Leamington’s Senior Bs were also in dominant form, thrashing Te Rapa 77-nil. Under 85kg Leamington’s Under-85kg team was beaten 34 – 15 by Fraser Tech. Both sides were looking to claim fourth spot on the ladder. Leamington began well with forwards maintaining possession for

the backs to run off, resulting in a penalty and a converted try to Jesse Warwick. In the second 20 minutes Tech’s large pack dominated the scrums, denying Leamington the ball. This stretched Leamington’s defence, resulting in four quick tries to Tech for a half time score of 22-10. Tech scored immediately after half time, but Leamington stepped up their defence with neither team scoring for the next 25 minutes when Tech managed to crash over for another try. Leamington did not give up and were rewarded with a try right on full time to hard working number eight Lewis Meerkerk. Player of the day was Hamish Madgwick who produced great line out work and a tireless loose forward display. Colts The Leamington Regal Agriculture Colts produced a strong performance against Matamata Combined and led 14-7 at half time and extended that to 40-7 by full time. Keegan Harris was player of the day. The Colts’ next game is at home to Hamilton Old Boys.

Reds launch Chatham Cup campaign By Josh Eabsy

Cambridge go in search of New Zealand football’s oldest club trophy this weekend when they play Papakura City in the first round of the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup.

The Chatham Cup has been contested since 1923 and Cambridge have entered the national knockout competition since the 1960s. However club glory has so far eluded Cambridge with the club never getting past the third round – in fact, it’s reached that stage 12 times without progressing further. Other teams from the Waikato/Bay of Plenty have proven it is possible to reach the latter stages of competition. Huntly Thistle (1971) and Ngaruawahia (1984) both reached the fifth rounds, while Waikato United were beaten finalists in 1992, losing 3-1 to Wellington’s Miramar Rangers. Rotorua City – who now play in the same Loaded WaiBOP Premiership as Cambridge – lost the 1989 final 7-1 to Christchurch United. On Saturday, the Reds travel to McLennan Park in South Auckland for their 2.30pm tie against Papakura who were relegated from the Northern League last season. For the Reds, the cup will provide a break from a so-far successful Lotto NRFL campaign in which Cambridge now lie in third place on the second division ladder after a third of the competition schedule. Last Saturday, the Reds beat Albany United 1-0 in Auckland, thanks to Josh Clarkin’s third goal of the season. He put Cambridge ahead in the 35th minute and then the Reds defence held firm to take the three points. Having conceded only seven goals so far this season, Cambridge now have the tightest defence in the league.

the experienced Jason Szabo and Mitchell Claridge. In Waikato Division 3, Cambridge lost 6-3 to Otorohanga Reserves. Scorers for Cambridge were Miguel Peterle (2) and an own goal. The division 3 side heads to Matamata for a local derby this Saturday. On Sunday, Cambridge’s women’s team heads to West Hamilton United for a repeat of last year’s Waikato Cup final (won by the Hamilton side). In their last game, Cambridge lost 1-0 to Waikato Unicol at John Kerkhof Park. The Hill Homes Player of the Day was goalkeeper Annie Martin. Cambridge’s U-13 WaiBOP Youth League side won 6-2 at Claudelands Rovers after leading 2-1 at the interval. Scorers were Blake Taylor (3), Cortlan Davis-Havill, Keanen Subramoney and Noah Maloney.

The reserves lost the curtain-raiser 1-0 to Albany United’s second string, leaving the side eighth on the reserves competition ladder. Due to the Chatham Cup game, the Cambridge reserves are without a match this weekend. Of the club’s eight senior and youth teams, all but one are playing away from home this weekend. The only match at John Kerkhof Park will be Cambridge’s Waikato Division 4 match against Waikato Unicol on Saturday, starting 12.30pm. The WaiBOP Championship team travels to Tauranga City, having struck top form last weekend with a 7-2 rout of Tauranga Blue Rovers. Striker and captain Adam Brady had a field day, scoring five goals in the 9th, 47th, 58th, 66th and 76th minutes. Cambridge’s other goals came from

Herbert oversees junior boom

By Josh Eabsy

More than a thousand players and spectators filled Cambridge Football Club’s junior grounds for the start of the winter season last weekend. The club has registered about 500 boys and girls (aged 4-14) this year, making it one of the largest in the region. Among them were 27 children aged 4-5, some of whom were kicking their first football as part of the club’s First Kicks programme. To cope with the growing numbers, the Cambridge club has formed a partnership with the Ricki Herbert Football Academy. Led by former All Whites player and coach Ricki Herbert, the academy

provides qualified coaches to oversee the development of Cambridge’s players from the age of 6 up. Herbert, who is the Cambridge club’s technical director, said it was essential that all children had the opportunity to develop their skills to whatever level they seek to play at. Ten years ago, Herbert picked a 17-yearold called Chris Wood for the All Whites and he’s since become the New Zealand captain and one of the leading players in English football. He was also a junior player at Cambridge before making his first team debut at 14. “Who knows,” said Herbert, “among the children playing at the club this year, we may have the next Chris Wood.”

Pony club wins training day with famed event rider The Parenga Pony Club recently hosted high profile New Zealand event rider Bundy Philpott, a former pony clubber herself, for a training day for its members. The special day came about after the local club won a New Zealand Pony Clubs Association (NZPCA) competition for selling the most raffle tickets for a club of its size. “Our riders are still buzzing about the adventures they had with Bundy’s coaching sessions,” said Lorraine Phillips, Parenga Pony Club district commissioner. “Bundy proved that she’s not just a successful equestrian, but also a top coach, super human and athlete all in one. Her approach with all the riders, parents and supporters was supportive, encouraging and fun, making sure everyone came away feeling positive about their experience.” Held at the ultimate horse riding venue, the Little Valley

Farm in Ohaupo proved to be the ideal place to host the training day, where some riders were introduced to cross country riding for first time. “We had the entire property to call our own for the day,” said Lorraine, “and it’s venues and training opportunities like this that help keep riders passionate and keen to learn.” Riders also learned about horsemanship with long-time pony club instructor Marilyn Cooper helping to prepare them for upcoming exams as well as ensuring they know how to best take care of their horses. “Pony clubs are truly there to offer support and training from grass roots level,” said Lorraine, “and working with a hard working team of volunteers helps us be able to make events like this happen.” With the approval of NZPCA, the club is now running a

Campbell makes top 20 at Badminton Cambridge showjumper Jesse Campbell has made it to the 19th ranking in the world aboard his horse Cleveland at the 2019 Badminton Horse Trials in the UK, in what was the 70th anniversary of the iconic event. It was a dramatic morning in the showjumping for the final day on May 5, where dropped rails and time penalties saw a shakeup at the top of the leaderboard and no Kiwis on the podium. Great Britain’s Piggy French and Vanir Kamira’s snatched victory from the dominant Oliver Townend, also from Great Britain, on Ballaghmor Class. Australia’s Chris Burton took third and fourth on Cooley Lands and Graf Liberty respectively. Te Awamutu’s Andrew Nicholson and 11-year-old Swallow Springs was the best of the Kiwis, in fifth place on 35.8 penalty points. He came into the showjumping in fourth place, but the stunning grey took two rails to finish the day on 35.8 “He was very babyish on the first bit of the course,” said Andrew, who last won Badminton in 2017. “He only just showed his inexperience a bit and wasn’t really concentrating (early on) but for the second part of the course, he felt very

smart, like he can do. He will learn a lot from it.” Canterbury’s Tim Price and Ringwood Sky Boy were the next best for New Zealand – they came into the showjumping in sixth spot, but 12 jump penalties and 1.2 time saw them finish the day on 43.3 in 10th place. Jesse Campbell and Cleveland notched their first CCI5*-L completion

together in 19th place on 55 penalty points after taking three rails during their performance. “Badminton had challenged riders and today’s showjumping had taken its toll across a broad spectrum of really high caliber horses and riders,” said Graeme Thom, eventing high performance manager for Equestrian Sports New Zealand.

Mistakes cost Cambridge High 1st XV Match Report Saturday 4th May 2019 – Memorial Park St Peters beat Rob May Builders Cambridge High School 31-5 in a first XV clash at Memorial Park, Cambridge, last Saturday in the first round of the new Waikato Rugby Union Premier Secondary School Rugby Competition. St Peters, the current New Zealand Co Educational Secondary School Champions were going to a real step up for the CHS 1st XV. The team learnt early on that mistakes were going to cost them as St Peters crossed the line within a minute of kick off

after CHS failed to secure the ball from the kick off. The CHS boys rallied and got into their game plan putting St Peters under pressure in their 22 before a quick ball went wide to Israel Waetford which allowed CHS to score in the corner taking the score to 7-5 to St Peters. St Peters jumped straight back on attack and managed to find holes outside the ruck and ran in three tries in six minutes taking the score to 24-5 at half time. The second half was a real arm wrestle with neither side gaining any ascendancy. A brief lapse in concentration from CHS saw St Peters cross for a try after 17 minutes taking the final score to 31-5. “The Hustle” stars Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson as female scam artists, one low rent and the other high class, who team up to take down the dirty rotten scoundrels who have wronged them. “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” released in 1988 and famously paired Steve Martin and Michael Caine. Both Hathaway and Wilson have proven their comedic achievements on the big screen before, so getting the two actresses together on the big screen should make for some comedic fireworks.

'Top End Wedding' is a funny, feel-good ride through the stunningly scenic Northern Territory and seldom seen Tiwi Islands. Lauren and Ned are engaged, they are in love, and they have just ten days to find Lauren's mother who has gone AWOL somewhere in the remote far north of Australia, reunite her parents and pull off their dream wedding. New Zealander Kerry Fox and Gwilym (Bohemian Rhapsody) Lee also star. Funny, charming, touching and authentic.
