Cambridge charity the same after 50 years

Friends of Resthaven have undergone their 50th year of fundraising this year, starting with their recent Autumn raffle. The winner of raffle was Mary Oliver, who was most surprised because, as she said, she never wins anything. The raffle raised nearly $2,000 towards a patient hoist system for Resthaven. The group wishes to thank Fresh Choice and The Warehouse for their support in providing venues to fundraise, and all those who bought raffle tickets. Friends of Resthaven is a voluntary organisation which was set up to help raise funds for Cambridge’s very first resthome – Resthaven. They held their first meeting on April 28 in 1970. The $60,000 they needed to raise to obtain a Government grant for the resthome project was exceeded by 10% in that first year, which is the equivalent of over $1million in today’s money. It was aided greatly by the huge support of Cambridge residents, including the Lions, Rotary, the RSA, Federated Farmers, the

local council and the Federation of Country Women’s Institutes, whose Fencourt branch later set up Jumble Around. It should be noted that at that time, care for our elderly community was basically with the family, and Resthaven Trust as a community non-profit project was ahead of its time. It is one of the few aged care facilities in the region that continues with that philosophy. After that first year, Friends of Resthaven continued at a reduced capacity, funding smaller items to improve the lives of the residents. Taking over from Stan Payne, the original chairman, Pat Wallace was our first President, a post she held for a number of years. In fact she passed away in 2017, having been a resident of Resthaven for some time. While the charitable nature of Cambridge people has remained similar, the average age of committee members has risen steadily over the last 50 years. As an organisation we would love to welcome younger folk’s

participation. Those early members had the vision to see the need for elderly care in 1970, a need that was at least 30 years ahead them as individuals. So we ask you, the people of Cambridge, for your assistance in making sure that the Friends of Resthaven continue. Our annual General Meeting will be in Resthaven Quiet Room Chapel, on Tuesday 11 June at 2pm, to be followed by an afternoon tea.

Rent rises

30 per cent of their gross superannuation in rent. That is guaranteed by Council’s policy. Council no longer allows tenants aged under-65 to rent the units. When this change was made (in late 2017) there were four tenants aged under-65 living in the units. Council allowed them to stay on the basis no new under-65s would be admitted. Those tenants do not receive superannuation and Council is not privy to what benefits they receive; that is an issue between them and the government. On two separate occasions Council has waived the rent increase faced by one of our under-65 tenants who was experiencing hardship. It is important to note than under Council’s policy, Waipa’s pensioner housing is self-funding; in other words, it cannot be subsidised by ratepayers.

Sword and Juno and Utah. Landing craft disgorge their cargoes, armed and ready on the strand knowing they may not survive, but die here on this foreign land. Omaha, the battle bloody, mangled bodies fall and die lying on a foreign shore, only comrades hear their cry. Remembering Dunkirks withdrawal and Dieppes disasterous fray British and Canadians all sweet revenge will taste this day Doubtless ‘ere this day has ended, many more lives will be lost, but liberty must be defended, nothing comes without a cost. D Day was just the beginning. Overlord, the fight began to drive out tyranny so winning finally, the rights of man.

Letters to the editor

In response to the article “Rent rise has pensioners complaining” in the May 24 issue of Cambridge News… I would like to bring attention to the plight of the under 65’s. The mayor’s claim all tenants were paying 30% or less of their gross income is incorrect. I have challenged Council over the rental rates for the under 65 group, who under the new policy would not now qualify for council housing. However Mr John Miles wrote in an email and I quote, “A change to the age criteria is also proposed, to remove the provision of persons aged 55-64. It should be noted that we have some existing tenants that are in the 55-64 age bracket and these tenants will be allowed to remain as tenants and this policy change will not impact on those tenants.” This is incorrect, their rent is not based on 30% of their gross income of $308.91 plus their Accommodation Supplement, it is charged at the same rate as if they were receiving National Super ($475 gross) which is about $167 more than they get on a Supported Living Allowance. Bernie Frost Council responds: Mr Frost is confusing two issues. Waipa’s pensioner housing units are specifically provided for elderly people needing longterm accommodation and the vast majority of pensioner housing tenants receive superannuation. Those tenants, after taking into account the maximum supplement applicable to their rent, will pay no more than

D-Day remembered

Thursday this week marked the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Cambridge resident Brian Dunstan, who survived the London bombings as a child and watched D-Day overhead, had this to share. “Overlord” – D-Day, June 6, 1944 Overhead in the midnight sky, hundreds of bombers were flying high, above the landing craft that bore the soldiers to an alien shore. Vital bridges to secure airborne troops in gliders flew paratroops came floating down, crucial that they hold their ground. Early dawn and out at sea, warships pound relentlessly, defensive bunkers with shot and shell, making them a living hell. How they saw the budget By Viv Posselt

Cambridge SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) seem “underwhelmed” by the Government’s Wellbeing Budget, but it has got the thumbs up as well. Cambridge Chamber of Commerce CEO Kelly Bouzaid says businesses were underwhelmed by the Budget and saw the minimum wage and immigration as issues are of greater importance, “and they are seeing no light at the end of that tunnel.”

Cambridge Chamber of Commerce CEO Kelly Bouzaid.

Cambridge Community House (CCH) general manager Harriet Dixon welcomed the provision of $1.9 billion towards mental health initiatives. Finance Minister Grant Robertson listed his priorities for Budget 2019 as creating opportunities to help businesses transition to a sustainable and lowemissions economy, supporting digital innovation, lifting Māori and Pacific incomes, skills and opportunities, reducing and improving child wellbeing and supporting mental wellbeing for all New Zealanders. Among the sectors likely to benefit most were mental health services, beneficiaries and KiwiRail, the latter to the tune of a $1 billion investment. Kelly Bouzaid described the rail investment as “clearly beneficial” in aiding the Auckland-Hamilton corridor projects but said roading could face consequences in terms of quality and safety. “While growth is the word on everyone’s lips when it comes to Cambridge, some of our businesses are struggling, and this Budget certainly doesn’t come to their

aid.” Labelled the Wellbeing Budget, it offered $1.9 billion to mental health, with a boost to suicide prevention initiatives and an additional $1.1 billion to help vulnerable children. It pledged a Government spend of $535 million to index benefits to average wage increases, an initiative intended to help raise the incomes of vulnerable families. Critics have said the Budget failed to address rising costs of living for middle New Zealand and should have offered more to businesses likely to generate the income needed for social reforms. Harriet Dixon said she was looking forward to seeing exactly where this spending will go to make a real positive difference in people’s lives. “We have a strong focus on mental wellness at the Cambridge Community House and would love to see more funding going into prevention and supporting mental wellness, particularly in the early stages when it might prevent mild to moderate mental health issues from getting worse. “This should take the pressure

off DHBs as well, with fewer people needing support for severe mental health issues at hospitals.” Additional funding would help CCH counsellors support a growing community and offer prevention programmes to promote resilience and mental wellness, Harriet said. She hoped to see more affordable housing in Cambridge for both younger and older residents. That would in turn support the social networks and provide a wraparound bespoke service that helped build resilience in a community.

Cambridge Community House general manager Harriet Dixon is taking a more hopeful view of the Budget.

Students whip up cream pies for famine By Steph Bell-Jenkins

Students all over Cambridge are gearing up to take part in the annual 40 Hour Famine this weekend to help provide life-saving aid for South Sudanese refugees in Uganda. New Zealand’s largest youth fundraising event will kick off at 8pm Friday and finish at midday Sunday, involving nearly 6000 students from 34 schools across the Waikato. At Cambridge Middle School, Year 7 and 8 students Hayden Rhoda, Raghav Kaushik, Skyla Klos, Anaya Omundsen, Josh Dowling, Amelie Harvey, Annelise Bertrand and Matthew Smith have gone all out for the cause. The eight formed a committee at the beginning of this term and have since inspired about 150 fellow students to do the famine. They have also organised extra fundraising projects including a bake sale and a chance to throw cream pies at teachers, with cream supplied free by Tatua. The group, supported by teachers Shannon Kingsland and Danielle Fuller, has poured an estimated 40-50 hours into their fundraising effort. Skyla said watching videos about the South Sudenese people’s living conditions had made her “very upset and sad”. “It kind of makes you realise how much we have here compared to the people of South Sudan, and it makes you realise that we have heaps of things but they have nothing,” she said. There are many ways to participate in the 40 Hour Famine. While some are going without food, furniture or technology, others will be taking up a self-defined challenge.

“One of our students loves talking, so he’s doing 40 hours with no talking,” Danielle said. At Cambridge High School, a 10-strong service committee co-chaired by Ronan Fitch and Molly Oldershaw has got an estimated 350-400 students signed up for the famine and is also organising a bake sale. “We believe it’s important for our school and students to get involved and help students in other countries, especially since we are so privileged here in New Zealand,” Ronan said. About 90,000 New Zealand youth are expected to take part in this weekend’s famine to raise vital funds for the more than 800,000 South Sudanese who have fled conflict with hope of finding refuge in Uganda.

A funeral service is important for two reasons 1. A funeral gives people a chance to share their feelings while being supported by family, friends and others in the community who have known the person that has died. 2. It’s also a time to celebrate the life of that person, to hear stories, make tributes and

share memories; the good times and funny moments, their favourite music and unique contributions he or she has made. Let us guide and support you in your time of need with dignity and sincerity, honouring the person you are farewelling.

Bring back licence testing, says Cambridge

By Sophie Iremonger

Cambridge officials want to bring practical driving tests back to Cambridge. At last Thursday’s full Council meeting, members of the Cambridge Community Board asked Waipa District councillors to approach the NZTA and lobby to get the situation changed. They unanimously backed the request. “Look, I’ve raised this issue on behalf of Cambridge a number of times already with NZTA but we seem to be getting nowhere,” Waipā mayor Jim Mylchreest said, adding that he was more than happy to take a formal

approach to get something moving. Council staff were directed to write to the NZTA and request the change, coping that correspondence to Transport Minister Hon Julie Anne Genter and Local Government Minister Hon Nanaia Mahuta. Local Members of Parliament would also be approached for support. “I suspect Cambridge is just languishing on a list somewhere along with a whole stack of other smaller centres,” Mylchreest said. The New Zealand Transport Agency removed restricted and full driver’s licence testing from Cambridge in 2012 as part of the Government’s Safer Journeys strategy

to reduce death and injury amongst young drivers. It made the testing process much more challenging and harder to pass, meaning Cambridge roads no longer met the criteria. Learner’s licence tests can still be completed at the AA outlet on Victoria St. “Because the new, more challenging Restricted Driver Licence test introduced in February 2012 requires more complex driving scenarios, new test routes were developed,” NZTA’s Acting Director of Regional Relationships, Ross I’Anson said. “The strengthened test requires test sites with multiple lanes and a minimum level of traffic to achieve the level of challenge

required. “This means testing is not be able to be held in some centres, like Cambridge, that do not offer the necessary variety of traffic situations or levels of traffic required by the new restricted test. I’Anson said if roading conditions – i.e. layout and traffic flows – meet the requirements for a test route, and depending on expected volumes of demand, the Agency would consider reintroducing driver licence testing in Cambridge. At the time of going to print the NZTA had not responded to define exactly what those layout and traffic flow requirements were.

New classroom eases squeeze By Steph Bell-Jenkins

Kaipaki School principal Kim Budd is “delighted” with a spacious new classroom that opened last week to cater for her school’s rapidly expanding roll. Student numbers have more than doubled over the past seven years, growing from 46 in 2013 to 115 at present. “Last year we celebrated welcoming our 100th student,” said Kim, who attributed the increase in enrolments to Cambridge’s population growth and Kaipaki’s “amazing community spirit”. “There’s a real sense of community here; it’s a very special place,” she said. For the past year staff and students have been squeezed into

existing facilities and Kim praised their efforts in making the best of the situation. “They were often in very interesting learning spaces but that never halted their learning,” she said. “They just adjusted and made do; they were amazing. It’s wonderful having this new classroom and seeing the joy on our learners’ and teachers’ faces because there were a lot of sacrifices and it was a long time coming.” The fully wheelchair-accessible classroom has a large learning area that can be partitioned into two spaces using sliding doors, a bathroom with wheelchair access, and a kitchen with a fridge, oven and dishwasher. Kim worked with the Ministry of Education to adapt a modular

classroom design that had been approved when she arrived at the school. “We’re very lucky to have been able to add the dividing wall, kitchen and bathroom and verandas on either side,” she said. Kaumatua, Matua Mark Tumai blessed the new space at last Friday morning’s official opening in front of staff, the board of trustees, students, parents and invited guests. Those attending included Ministry of Education property advisor Peter Hannam and senior advisor Patsy Inder, Matt Whitmarsh of Whitmarsh Architects, Rob May Builders and representatives from Fieldays, which has a long-standing relationship with the school. Kim said one of the exciting

Five days to Fieldays By Sophie Iremonger

The Mystery Creek Events Centre has been transforming into a mini city again. Fieldays starts on Wednesday and the four-day event will feature 1,559 exhibitor sites showcasing cutting-edge innovations, creations, equipment and designs from the agricultural industry and beyond. From the kitchen theatre to the health hub, careers centre to the heritage village, and with a raft of competitions in between, it seems it would take four days just to see it all. But viewing is the easy part, planning it is much harder. That’s what Nicky Garland has spent the past few months doing, working as

the Fieldays event manager. Nicky grew up in Cambridge and after studying event management and working overseas she settled back in Auckland, working for Tourism New Zealand. She returned to Cambridge with partner Adam and in September was appointed Fieldays event manager. A regular Fieldays visitor growing up, as well as a Fieldays exhibitor and volunteer across various roles for over 10 years, Nicky is all too familiar with the event. “It’s hard not to though when you grow up just down the road,” she said. “It’s been awesome so far, it’s really fun to be involved in something so iconic. And I love being so close to home.” Nicky said despite managing

the Southern Hemisphere’s largest agricultural event, it hadn’t really been an overwhelming experience. “It’s really great that they’ve been doing it for 50 years, so it’s not like starting from scratch,” she said. “There’s a lot of good foundation work. “And I love planning too, it’s in my blood,” she laughed. Nicky said one of the most amazing aspects of the job was seeing the level of volunteer support for Fieldays. Over 200 volunteers are involved in this year’s Fieldays – there was just a small group for the first Fieldays in 1968. “Some people have been coming for decades, taking time off work, coming from the South Island. It’s like a community and it’s really

special.” Nicky disregards the idea of being the “glue that holds everything together”, instead likening herself to “the conductor in the orchestra”. “There’s an amazing team here that know what they’re doing, and I kind of feel like I’m here for the ride and helping guide where I can,” she said, adding that she “definitely” feels ready for this year’s Fieldays. “We’ve had an amazing Autumn so hopefully it will be great weather, we’ve been getting daily weather reports. “Usually with Fieldays you know to wrap up warm in your raincoat and wear your gumboots. I think that’s part of the tradition, right?”

for both sexes, she thought she’d give it a try and enter. But it was still quite the surprise when she got the call to say she’d made it through as one of the eight contestants. “I was shaking when they

called,” she said, “I was like, ‘oh wow, this is actually happening!’” The 21-year-old Dairy NZ Research Technician said she’s willing to give anything a go in the competition, but would probably do best in the innovative or

creative-type challenges. “I’m willing to give it all a go, although some of them I probably won’t know how to do! Chainsaws are probably not my strong suit but I definitely want to take things by the horns and give it a try.” Throughout Fieldays week the contestants, who all work in the agricultural industry, will be required to show off their skills in the areas of fencing, innovations, chainsaws, health and wellbeing, finance and ATV skills. On the Wednesday evening of Fieldays they’ll also have a chance to have a bit of fun and meet some new people in the off-site ‘Meet a Mate’ event. “Ultimately I’d like to meet a partner,” Charlotte said as to why she entered. “In the farming world you’re so focused on your work you barely find time to actually get out there and meet new people, so it would be nice to find someone on that same wavelength. “But even more than that, just getting new friends out of it will be really cool. The experience is going to be great. “I love Fieldays. I think it’s really cool that people can showcase their innovations, from high school students to people who are retired and still coming up with cool ideas.

She couldn’t count how many times she’s been, due to the fact that her parents Chris and Tasha were exhibitors for years as alpaca farm owners. Now attending this year as a Rural Catch contestant, she’s looking forward to the chance to get behind the scenes at Fieldays. “I’m looking forward to is seeing the parts that not everyone sees,” she said. The eight contestants, which includes two South Islanders, four North Islanders and two wildcards selected by sponsors, will gather for a meet-and-greet on Monday before the competition gets underway at Fieldays on Wednesday. With a pool of prizes up for grabs, the ultimate title in the competition is the coveted Golden Gumboot trophy, which last year went to Taihape’s Mairi Whittle, with Charlotte’s colleague Ben Fisher finishing second. Along with the Golden Gumboot, up for grabs in the grand prize will be a brandnew Suzuki King Quad worth $17,995 and a $2000 Swanndri voucher.

Pet owner warning over rat poison By Sophie Iremonger

Treatment for one Cambridge cat continues this week after potentially ingesting poison. Sharon Barnett took all three of her cats to the Cambridge Pet Vets after finding a piece of rat bait had been brought in through the cat flap, and appeared to have been chewed. Following three weeks of twice-daily vitamin K treatments blood test results on Monday gave the all clear for Willow and Ebony, but Angus will need to continue his treatment for another week, with another blood test scheduled for next week. Owner Sharon wanted to warn other residents of the dangers and responsibility around using rat bait, hoping the experience will remind others to follow proper set up when using rat poison, so that the bait is not accessible

to cats, dogs or children. Most safety guidelines recommend using bait stations, so only mice and rats can reach the bait. “I really just want to warn

people to be aware, and take care when handling and setting out rat bait,” she said. “Thankfully there weren’t any young children in my house.”

Glide Time coming to Gaslight The Cambridge Repertory Society’s second production for the year is on this month at the Gaslight Theatre. Glide Time, written by New Zealand playwright Roger Hall, promises to be entertaining and witty, with small bouts of inappropriateness thrown in. Director Tracey Barlow, excited to see the show come together recently with its final touches, said she’s looking forward to hearing feedback from guests at the Gaslight. “It’s the part of productions I love the most, hearing what people think about what they’ve seen, and what they may have taken from it,” she said. “Taking a play from words in a book to stage is what it’s all about, and I am really passionate about delivering what the play speaks to me.” Glide Time was written in the late 1970s at a time when the working week was subjected to change – with a flexible start and finishing time – and as apparent in this production, it can be taken to excess. It’s 1976, Wellington, cold and wet. You would rather be anywhere else, even Hamilton. First thing Monday morning,

John, Jim, Beryl, Hugh, Michael, Wally and Boss stumble into work and shake off the outdoors, hoping to warm themselves in the comfort of the Governments Stores Offices. All is fine, until the boss declares his promotion to Ag and Fish, and competition for the top job appears between the characters. The cast for Glide Time is a combination of newcomers to the Gaslight and Cambridge Repertory Society along with actors who have tread the stage boards so often they’ve left a groove in their wake. Steve McMurray makes another appearance onstage, this time as Jim, and is joined by Peter Tait (the boss) and Clive Garrish (Hugh). Making their debut appearance at the Gaslight is Colin and Chrissy Hodkinson (John and Beryl), Nick Hall (Michael) and Jamie Thomas (Wally). With a new (and quiet) heating system throughout the theatre, bracing the cold winter night is worth it to go and view the play. The show runs June 15 – 29. Tickets are available from Paper Plus Cambridge or online at www.eventfinda.co.nz.

Former mayor stepping down By Sophie Iremonger

A veteran of public service recently announced he’ll hang up his hat in October after more than two decades in local government. Alan Livingston said it had been hard work and challenging, but also “an absolute privilege” to serve both the Waipa District and Waikato regional communities as a councillor, mayor and chairman. He will not be seeking a third term when local government elections take place in October. “For the last 15 years as mayor and then regional council chair there has been a total commitment to the job, including evenings and weekends,” he said. “I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity, but the time is right for me to step back and spend more time with my family and grandchildren and enjoy some projects that have been put on the back burner.” Livingston said he will continue to watch what happens locally with interest, and plans to remain involved in key projects around the district – including a museum for Cambridge which will depict the town’s sporting strengths across equine, rowing and cycling. A Te Pahu native – on the slopes of Pirongia – Alan looks forward to continuing work on a book he’s writing about the history of his home area. Despite not specifically being a Cambridge or Te Awamutu resident, he says a highlight of his career was helping to unite both the towns after the disestablishment of the Te Awamutu and Cambridge borough councils. “I guess that was one of the things I feel proud of, working hard to break down that Cambridge – Te Awamutu barrier in my time, and I think it was achieved.” He was proud to have seen the district grow so successfully over the past quarter century, from becoming the Waipa Home of Champions, to Cambridge’s substantial growth. He said back when he was a councillor in 1995, the council was concerned about the fact that Cambridge wasn’t growing.

“Te Awamutu was bigger than Cambridge,” he said “It was languishing, its infrastructure wasn’t the best, so it’s come a long way in a short time. Council did a rezone of Cambridge north, and that probably coincided with growth generally, but it just took off from there. “The whole growth and vibrancy has just continued and I guess now the challenge is going to be to retain that special character of Cambridge, as it was. Encouraging growth but also ensuring that Cambridge character is retained.” Alan said he hoped he’d made a positive difference to the district, reflecting on major upgrades to the Cambridge CBD in the early 2000s, the world-class upgrade of Karapiro domain a few years later, and the establishment of the Avantidrome as some of his top contributions to Cambridge. “All of those things have just given Cambridge a real identity and a purpose we can all be proud of,” he said. “The best advice I ever had was from Sir Patrick Hogan, which was don’t compromise quality,” he said as he remembered the CBD overhaul. “We had to ensure everything was done to a high standard, down to the quality of bricks for the street walk ways.” “That wasn’t just about the pavement, we established the Sports Walk of Fame, the Equine Walk of Fame, the Melbourne Cup Wall of Honour, and of course the mare and foal statue. “I think we still need to have something that acknowledges other Cambridge folk who have achieved.” Livingston had some words of wisdom for aspiring councillors eyeing up the coming elections. “Local government is big business, turning over millions of dollars and directly impacting people’s lives. You need very good financial acumen because you are making core decisions about other people’s money,” he said. “Candidates need to be well aware of what their role is, and what their role isn’t. They will have to thoroughly research and consider some important decisions. You need to appreciate the differing views others bring to the table and you must have the capacity to think strategically and longterm.”

Alan Livingston has announced he’ll step down from the regional council in October, but will stay involved with projects in Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Pirongia.

He said good councils worked as a team and that single issue people were of “little value” around a council table. “You can make all the promises you like to get elected, but if your colleagues don’t agree with you, you won’t have support so you’ll get nowhere and deliver nothing.”

Pets on show this Sunday By Sophie Iremonger

Three-year-old Wilson LeBas seems like your average cat. He can be seen wandering the Kings Garden area like any neighbourhood tabby, enjoying the sunshine or perhaps chasing a shadow, but there’s more to this cat than meets the eye. Wilson is a double grand premier winner, or the equivalent there of, having earned a number of points at cat shows around the North Island. In recent years he was supreme domestic winner at both the Hamilton Cat Show and the Mid-Island show, and even won the supreme domestic title at his first cat show held in Cambridge in 2016. That cat show, run by the Geyserland Cat Club, will return to the Cambridge Town Hall this Sunday afternoon. All the top pedigrees will be on display, including Maine Coons, Persians, Ragdolls and Sphynxes, as well as regular household pets like Wilson. As a brown tabby with perfectly symmetrical white markings and striking black patterns, he tends to catch the eye of judges. “He is a stunner,” said his owner Dianne LeBas, who has been part of the organising team for the Geyserland Cat Club shows for the past 25 years. Now more accustomed to lazing in the vege garden or cuddling up with his “big brother” Diesel, a black lab, Wilson will be retiring this year, as will Dianne. The Cambridge show is the last one she’ll organise with the club. She recommends the show as a great starting point for

anyone looking to enter their pet in a cat show, with plenty of breeders and cat owners on hand to provide advice on getting started. The domestic section of cat shows means anyone can enter their household cat – they don’t need to be a specific pedigree breed. Black and white cats, ginger cats, you name it. “We all think our cats are pretty, but if someone thinks their cat is striking or has nice markings or something then there’s nothing to stop them from entering,” said Dianne. Cats are judged across four rings with four different judges, this Sunday’s show featuring Australian judges Margaret Steed and Barbara LaRocca, as well as Kiwi judges Sharon José, Lyall Payne, Diane Holtom and David Colley. Cats are entered in the longhair or shorthair sections of the pedigree, companion or domestic categories. “Domestic” is for any non-specific breed of cat, and “companion” is for breeds which don’t meet the pedigree standard. “Pedigree” covers purebred varieties. Entries into this Sunday’s cat show have closed, but to find out about entering the next cat show, email geyserland. secretary@gmail.com. Stalls will be on hand at the show this Sunday with plenty of information available. “It’s a chance to have a chat and just ask questions,” said Dianne, who has become particularly fond of the cat showing scene over the years. “The shows are a great chance to catch up with people, and some of them become long term friends.”

Entry into Sunday’s show, running 12.30pm – 4pm at the Cambridge Town Hall, is $5 for adults (12 years and up) and $3 for 5 – 11 year olds. Under fives entry is free.

Cambridge cat show organiser Dianne LeBas, pictured with supreme winner Wilson, hopes to see residents turn out to the Geyserland Cat Show on Sunday.

Cambridge trampers head south

Heading to the Whakaipo Recreational Reserve W2K Walkway in Kinloch recently, our day started in the fog as we headed down to Taupo on SH1. We turned off at Kinloch, Oruanui Road, then right onto Poihipi Road, left onto Mapara Road, travelling about 8km before turning right at the W2K Walkway sign. The journey takes around an hour and a half from Cambridge. This road brings you alongside Lake Taupo at the Whakaipo Recreation Reserve. Drive along to the right and park outside the walkway information board. The W2K walkway is shared by both bike riders and walkers. The sun was out and 24 of us enjoyed an easy-to-medium undulating walk along a track wide enough to accommodate both riders and walkers. We enjoyed beautiful bush and bird song

with lovely views of the Lake Taupo and the surrounding hillsides and mountains along the way. Just past the halfway sign post (7km) we stopped at our lunch stop/shelter and toilet, with a lookout area of about 700m from the shelter. We then returned along the same track back to the cars. There is the option of carrying on to complete this track another 7km (approx..) which could be done if you arranged cars at both ends of the track. We finished off the afternoon enjoying more Lake Taupo views with tea/coffee and cake at Geoff’s, one of our fellow trampers. Our day finished full circle with more fog back in Cambridge. Our next tramp this Sunday, June 9 at Karangahake mountain track. Phone Kay for details on 07 827 6432.

Hard work rewarded at cycling awards New Zealand’s best cycling talent was celebrated at the Cycling New Zealand Annual Awards dinner held in Cambridge last Saturday. The Annual Awards dinner recognises achievements by riders throughout the year across road, track, BMX, mountain bike, and schools cycling, as well as the contributions of their coaches, volunteers and officials. A number of titles went to members of Cambridge’s cycling community, including Jim McMurray, awarded Masters Male Road Cyclist of the Year for the second year

After almost causing a major upset in football’s oldest cup competition last weekend, Cambridge now turn their attention again to their Northern League title campaign. The Reds lost 5-4 in extra time on Saturday after giving top Auckland club Glenfield Rovers a major fright in the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup. A close result against a team playing two divisions higher will give the Cambridge side confidence when they travel to Auckland tomorrow. They sit third on the Lotto NRFL second division table and play fourthplaced Metro FC in a match that will help decide which club stays in touch with leaders Manurewa and second-placed Claudelands Rovers. While the Reds are away, home supporters will get the opportunity to see Cambridge’s WaiBOP Championship side in action when they host Tokoroa at John Kerkhof Park tomorrow at 2.45pm. That side should be inspired by the performance of the club’s first team in the Chatham Cup when they went within a whisker of causing one of the season’s biggest upsets. The Reds almost forced the two-hour cup tie to penalties in a game had everything deserving of a cup tie. Marcelo Sosa, another former WaiBOP United player, opened the scoring for Cambridge with a 19th minute penalty before Glenfield took the lead with two goals in a four-minute burst. First, Jason Quinlan found the net before an own goal provided the second in the 26th minute. At that stage, Cambridge could have

been tempted to bow to the pressure but instead, the Reds fired up. Josh Clarkin was proving a handful for the Rovers defence and he ably set up Zach Mayo for a shot in the 33rd minute. Mayo struck it sweetly to draw the teams level. That’s how the teams turned around at the interval. Ten minutes after the break, Quinlan put the Aucklanders ahead again. And when Rovers went 4-2 up in the 82nd minute, with a goal by substitute Jamie Mason, the tie looked as good as over. Cambridge have shown this season an ability to fight for the full game, and have won four of their league matches with goals in the last few minutes. Somehow, they found the spirit and skill to find two more goals in the dying minutes.

Substitute Callum MacLeod scored in the 83rd minute – on the pitch for only two minutes at that stage – and Josh Clarkin deservedly found his side’s fourth goal with just a minute of normal time remaining. In extra time, Cambridge created more chances and were the fitter of the two sides. But one crucial chance, snapped up by Rovers’ Mason midway through the first spell of extra time, determined the outcome. Up 5-4, Rovers played out time, taking the ball into the corner and using up as much time as they could. At full time both sets of supporters applauded the players for delivering one of the most entertaining matches seen at John Kerkhof Park in many seasons.

Basketball awards a family affair A mother-daughter duo, both former and current New Zealand representatives in basketball, have been awarded trophies for their performances in 2018. Two-time basketball Olympian Leanne Walker, now coach of the St Peter’s Premier girls basketball team, was awarded Female Coach of the Year at the Basketball New Zealand Awards on May 18. Last year she coached the St Peter’s team into the finals of the last four secondary schools girl’s national basketball tournaments, winning three, and was head coach of the New Zealand women’s basketball team which won gold at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup. “Leanne’s passion and commitment to the sport and athletes is undeniable,” her award citation read. “She never looks for recognition and always remains humble despite her amazing achievements and contribution to basketball. She is a remarkable woman who always looks to better those around her and she is a deserved recipient of this award.” Leanne’s daughter Charlisse Leger-Walker received the Lance McLaughlan Trophy as Female Junior Player of the Year, for the third year in a row. In 2018 Charlisse became the youngest ever Tall Fern and helped New Zealand claim a bronze medal at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. She also represented the country at two FIBA pinnacle age-group events, and was the highest individual scorer at the U17 FIBA World Cup, averaging 15 points per game. In

the domestic circuit she led Waikato to two national championships at the U19 and U23 tournaments, claiming MVP (most valuable player) at both. She collected her third MVP award at the secondary school’s national championships where she led St Peter’s to their third title in four years. Last year she was named in the All-Star Five of the Women’s Basketball Championship (WBC) and named WBC Junior Player of the Year. Leanne’s other daughter Krystal LegerWalker, 21, was also a stand-out national player during her time at St Peter’s, and was recruited out of high school to play for Northern Colorado State University. Last week it was announced she will transfer to play with the Washington State team.

The Cambridge side was on the wrong end of a lop-sided penalty count in Hamilton and finished with 14 players after a second yellow was shown. The Waikato Draught Premiership A joint competition leaders won 26-22 to end the day as one of three clubs with successive wins in the new round.

The other two are Fraser Tech and Ōtorohanga – who travel to play Hautapu tomorrow in what promises to be a fascinating clash. It’s certain Hautapu will have discussed discipline during the week. That was a point made this week on the club Facebook Page which noted: “It’s timely also to remind us all that Hautapu supports the WRU code of conduct for all participants, including supporters. Please make sure Hautapu supporters show respect to all officials,

they are giving up their time and putting in a lot of hard work to make sure we have a game to watch.” Ōtorohanga have had an excellent season and they beat Hamilton Old Boys 33-7 last weekend. Hautapu’s Championship B side, which plays Ōtorohanga in the curtain raiser tomorrow, also has a daunting task. The King Country side has two wins from two, while Hautapu has lost twice in competitive outings – last week 33-17 to Marist.

FRIDAY JUNE 7, 2019

Leamington win all three

Leamington celebrated three wins over Tokoroa-based Southern United on a day when the Senior-B and Colts teams shared the plaudits. The Senior A team won the main game 41-24 - while the B team, also in the first game of the new championship round and Colts maintained unbeaten runs. The Senior A’s were clearly determined to make up for the last outing 34-15 loss to Hinuera- and came up against an experienced and physically considerably bigger SURF side. The teams couldn’t be separated at half time, when it was 19-all. Daniel Thornton, Hayden Ivor and Mitch Abbott scored tries and Regan Erueti converted twice. Surf led early in the second half before Jonah Haycock responded and Regan converted a penalty. A penalty try for collapsing the maul and a try to captain Drew Bootten decided the game and Leamington won 41-24. Player of the day was Shaye Clark on a day when both he and Carl Gubba Neilsen received their blazers for 35 appearances. The senior B team finished top of their round robin undefeated, with SURF third. The match between the two produced the closest score line of the day at Leamington – 17-15 to

the home team. Player of the day was James Dunn In the Under 21’s clash, the last of the Round Robin saw Leamington’s Regal Agriculture Colts get off to a fantastic start, clocking up 20 points in the first 20 minutes. Southern United came back strong and held the undefeated Leamington team scoreless for long periods. The final score was 34-0 to Leamington which finished the round with eight wins from eight games. Tomorrow the seniors travel to Morrinsville and the under 85kg team host University. The draw for presidents and colts was not available at the time of going to press.

Try scorer Mitch Abbott.

New bike sweeps clean By Andy McGechan

Armed with a brand-new bike and not much time to adjust to it, Auckland's Callan May was still determined he would lead from the beginning of this year's edition of the three-round Dirt Guide Cross-country Series. That's exactly what the 27-year-old did on Saturday when a shotgun blast signalled the start to the two-hour senior race, in forestry at Ohakuri.

May took his new 2019-model KTM 350EXC-F to exit turn one with three or four other fast starters for company, but the Titirangi man was on his own and out front just five minutes after that and he "never looked back from there". Ashton Grey from Cambridge, on a Yamaha YZ450FX, finished eighth in the race. "The conditions were difficult (after heavy rain had drenched the forest), but it was not impossible," said May. May was eventually credited with a 26-second win over runner-up rider Hadleigh Knight, of Atiamuri, with Manawatu's Paul Whibley, also a former Dirt Guide champion, claiming third overall, finishing a further minute behind. "My fitness was pretty good, despite me having not raced much lately," said May afterwards. "I have been mountain-biking a lot though," he confessed. The popular three-round Dirt Guide Series has wide appeal, attracting a diverse range of talents, but it also entices the cream of New Zealand's dirt biking community to turn up in large numbers. This is something that should surprise nobody because it is precisely events such as this that have created, inspired

FRIDAY JUNE 7, 2019

and nurtured Kiwi cross-country racing talent over the years before setting some of our brightest young talent on pathways to top-level international competition. First equal in the Dirt Guide Series in 2013, May is one of several Dirt Guide champions from the past who have progressed to race overseas, each of them able to trace their careers back to popular Kiwi dirt bike competitions such as this one. Other former Dirt Guide race winners who have gone on to greater things overseas include individuals such as Whibley, Coatesville's Sam Greenslade and Howick's Liam Draper. Draper is currently racing for a KTM team in the United States and waving the Kiwi flag high at the Grand National cross-country Championships there. Meanwhile, the winner of the 90-minute junior race on Saturday was Taupo's Wil Yeoman, with Oparau's Hunter Scott and Rotorua's Hunter Steens completing the podium. Round two of the series is set for the same course at Ohakuri, in just three weeks’ time, on June 22, and the third and final round of the series on August 24, also at the popular Ohakuri venue.

Enduro championships too close to call

Ashton Grey pictured in action last Saturday. Picture: Andy McGechan, BikesportNZ.com

This season’s New Zealand Enduro Championships will nudge past the halfway stage next weekend, with the fourth round of seven set for rugged terrain in the Wairarapa. This 2019 Yamaha and Mitas Tyressponsored series has featured three different winners so far, so it’s virtually impossible to tell yet which individual might deserve the tag of outright title favourite. However, the fog of uncertainty may lift a little this Sunday afternoon. Round four on Sunday takes riders to

remote Ruakokoputuna Road, south of Martinborough, and results there could be pivotal in deciding the outcome of the 2019 championship. Points from only six of the seven rounds are to be counted, with riders to discard their one worst result, so the race for the outright win, and the various class titles too, could remain wide open right until the final showdown in July. “The course is steep farmland, but nothing too extreme,” said Motorcycling New Zealand (MNZ) enduro commissioner Justin Stevenson.

“It is very similar to tracks we have used in the past and one of my favourites,” he said. “It has been a bit wet there lately, so sharp, fresh tyres might well be recommended.” Helensville’s Tom Buxton won round one near Whangamata in March, Cambridge rider Dylan Yearbury clinched the win at round two near Porirua in April and Thames rider Chris Birch topped the podium at round three near Tokoroa two weeks later.

Strong showing from Cambridge in lacrosse

The St Peter’s Premier team will be the team to beat as the defending champions in the Waikato Lacrosse Girls Secondary School League this weekend. 29 teams from 11 Waikato schools will start the round robin series at the Tamahere Recreational Reserve this weekend, after three seeding rounds last month determined their grading in the season draw. The St Peter’s Premier team sit at the top of the table having won all three of their seeding matches. Cambridge High School’s Premier team had some close matches during their grading rounds but have yet to nail a victory. The school’s Premier Reserve and Premier Development teams are in a good position after two wins apiece. Cambridge High has seen a strong showing of lacrosse players this year after an influx of new players came through from the intermediate league, adding an extra team

to make a total of five teams representing the school. Along with their Premier and Premier Reserve teams, they also have a Year 10 Premier Development team and two Year 9 teams. St Peter’s School also has three teams, with two teams in the Premier/A division as well as a team of Year 9/10 students in the B division. For secondary school boys, their league will start as a separate competition in early June, played indoors during Terms 2 and 3 in Hamilton. The Waikato Girls Secondary School Lacrosse League plays at the Tamahere Recreational Reserve, Wiremu Tamihana Drive, Tamahere, every Saturday from 10.30am to 4pm between May 11 and June 29, and from July 27 to August 31. Spectators are welcome. To find out more visit https:// waikatolacrosse.co.nz/ or Waikato Lacrosse on Facebook.

The 17 year old is heading to South Korea this month along with the rest of the team to compete in the ten-day 2019 Asia Pacific Lacrosse Championship, running June 19 - 29. Bell team firing for Ellerslie

Cambridge trainer John Bell will head to Ellerslie on Saturday aiming to extend his winning run. Hot on the heels of producing Noble Star and Ata Rangi for wins at Te Rapa on Wednesday, Bell will saddle Yorkshire Dales, Helena Baby and Epae Road at Ellerslie as he looks to capitalise on a roll that has seen him win five races from his last 18 runners. “Things are going well for us. We’ve got magnificent riders and our staff are experienced and dedicated. Hard work and dedication is coming to fruition,” said Bell, enjoying his best season as a trainer to date with 14 wins.

“Our horses are given time and they are happy. If you have healthy, fit and happy horses, they are going to run well.” Bell puts all three of his Ellerslie contingent into the fit and happy category and expects Yorkshire Dales and Helena Baby to run up to their recent winning form. Barfoot & Thompson Chairman’s Trophy (1400m) contender Yorkshire Dales resumed with a tenacious open sprint win at Rotorua in April in his first run since a meritorious fifthplacing in the Gr.2 Rich Hill Mile (1600m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day.

“We’ve just cruised with him. He’s a horse that works himself pretty hard so we don’t do too much with him,” Bell said. “He’s improved since Rotorua and Craig Grylls wanted to stay with him.” A winner of six of his 16 starts, Yorkshire Dales won twice in England before racing in Hong Kong and owner Wilson Wong Ching Ho has an ambitious target of a return trip for December’s Gr.1 Hong Kong International Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin should the Vale Of York seven-year-old gelding continue on his winning way. “He’s Hong Kong-owned and the owner would love to get him to the Hong Kong Mile, so we’ll do what we can to get him there,” Bell said. Guillotine gelding Helena Baby will chase a hat-trick of wins when he contests the OMF 1400. “He’s a smart animal. He’s 100 percent athlete and his temperament is brilliant,” Bell said. “We’ve just nursed him along since his last win at Rotorua and we’re very happy with him. He’s so capable and we’d be disappointed if he wasn’t competitive on Saturday. “We’ll make a decision about what we will do with him after Saturday but I don’t think we’ll keep running on the winter tracks too much longer. He’s a horse who could be back to chase Christmas and New Year’s carnival prizemoney.” Bell has jumping targets in-mind for Epae Road and was accepted for the Cambridge News templateCelebrating Curraghmore/Long Leaf’s Helena Baby could record her third straight win at Ellerslie on Saturday. The Waikato Youth Symphonic Band have kept busy lately attending music festivals around the North Island, and picking up awards in the process. The band, which includes Cambridge High School members Jack Redpath, Josh Bam, Fraser Duncan, Joe Dillon and Isabella Howells, attended the

Matamata Festival of Music on May 12 and were awarded the Trophy for Musical Excellence as the best band at the festival. The Cambridge High members also performed separately as part of the Cambridge High School Concert Band and were awarded the silver award for

their efforts. The following weekend the youth band, which also includes two exCambridge High students Fiona Stephens and Dana Foley, travelled to Hastings for the Hawkes Bay Festival of Bands and received another gold award at that festival.

Wellness Week was held at Cambridge High School recently as a student initiative to promote physical and mental wellbeing. Deputy head girl Charlotte Mitchell organised the event alongside the school’s health and wellbeing committee as a way to promote antibullying as well as awareness and understanding of the five ways to wellbeing. “We had been planning the week since the beginning of the year so it was very exciting to see all our hard work come to fruition,” Charlotte said. “It was a fantastic collaborative effort throughout the whole school. “The main purpose around the week was to increase awareness but also to create an open discussion around these ideals of wellness, mental wellbeing and anti-bullying, and hopefully create an environment that these discussions can continue outside of Wellness Week.” Lunch time activities were held

throughout Wellness Week, including bracelet making, rock painting, flax weaving, bake sales, and a popular Jump Jam session which attracted over

100 participants. Held for the first time this year, organisers hope to make the week an annual event.

DARK PHOENIX This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX (mythical bird). During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet - one of their own.

THE DAM BUSTERS One of the great British war movies, this fantastic WW2 movie of the raid by the RAF on the dams of the Ruhr Valley in Germany, May 1943. After inventing the "Bouncing Bomb," which can skip across water until it encounters a dam to explode, Dr. Barnes Wallis (Michael Redgrave) struggles for years to develop his new device for use in World War II. Once the bombs are ready to be tested, Wing Commander Guy Gibson's (Richard Todd) Squadron must be specially trained to drop the sensitive weapons on Germany's Ruhr Dams. Based on true events, this British film features a legendary grand finale of special effects. A force of understatement.
