GREAT SPECIALS

Set in the world of competitive sport, The Wolves is a story of friendship, comradery, and the importance of supporting the people beside you. Following the lives of a teenage soccer team and the tribulations they face not only as side effects of their age, but of their being female in a male-dominated arena. This piece is a testament to the immense cooperation required to succeed as people and athletes. Directed by Peter Cooke of the Cambridge High School Drama department, the play casts Year 12 drama students as its heroines, and in doing so exemplifies the sheer talent within this part of the CHS arts faculty. As the story of these athletes unfolds, the audience is taken on a journey surrounding the importance of teamwork, and the way that we as people cope with loss. Heart-warming and emotional, this play was well worth the fee of a gold coin donation and only adds to the quality of the CHS Arts department. The play ran last Wednesday and Thursday. • Ruby Strawbridge is a student at Cambridge High.

88 Pianos I have known by the Jan Preston Trio has proven to be popular with a toe tapping audience enjoying the show when it came to town during the Cambridge Autumn Festival. Now it’s back, with two shows on this month in Putaruru and Hamilton. The first show takes place on Thursday, August 15 from 8pm at the Nivara Lounge in Hamilton, tickets $25 from Shearers Musicworks or at eventfinda.co.nz (with booking fee). The second is at The Plaza in Putaruru from 2pm on Sunday, August 18. Tickets are $25 from the Plaza Theatre or at eventfinda.co.nz (with booking fee). Jan Preston is known as Australia’s queen of boogie piano, and her latest CD Play It Again Jan bears testament to that. In her show 88 Pianos I have known, the pianist extraordinaire, together with her band, shares her passion for pianos and could quite possibly make the audience never look at a piano the same again. Projected images combine with unforgettable biographical stories, original songs and piano trio music, moving the audience from tears to laughter. Cambridge News has tickets to give away to both the Hamilton and Putaruru shows. To enter, send your full name and contact number, along with “Jan Preston Hamilton” or “Jan Preston Putaruru” in the subject line, to sophie@goodlocal.nz no later than 9am, Tuesday August 6.

DIY donations appreciated The call is out for donations of surplus building materials. The Cambridge East Primary School PTA is reaching out to tradies and “handy” people in the community to pass on any good quality, surplus building and DIY materials to use in the upcoming Great DIY Garage Sale. The school fundraiser event was a hit when it first ran in October last year, and it’s coming back to Cambridge this year on October 20, held once again at Shaws Wire Ropes, 75 Victoria Road. Not only supporting the school, the event aims to stop good DIY products from going to landfill, and enables suppliers within the industry to donate materials, as well as the general public who may have items left over from their DIY projects. “The goal of the Great DIY Garage Sale is to reduce the amount of construction and demolition products which end up in landfill,” said Suzy Downey, a Cambridge East Primary School PTA committee member. “And at the end of the day it’s a great fundraising initiative for the school. The 2018 sale helped part-fund projects such as a new school sound system and which was very much

needed.” Construction and demolition waste is estimated to make up 11.5% of all waste in the Waikato region – around 26,000 tonnes a year, Downey said. “In 2018 the inaugural Great DIY Garage Sale saved 15 tonnes of building materials from landfill, with over 500 attendees helping to raise over $11,000 for the school. “Diverting these materials from landfill saved approximately $5,000 in waste disposal costs. The PTA team hope this year’s Great DIY Garage Sale will save even more

materials from going to landfill. “It’s a great way to encourage the community to think about different ways to reduce waste.” The team is welcoming businesses, tradies and others to donate good quality building, joinery, plumbing, electrical, landscaping, flooring and DIY products which are surplus to their requirements. Organisers can collect the products or they can be dropped off by arrangement. Contact Paul on 021 805 344 or Matt on 021 624 936 to find out more, or email diygaragesale@ gmail.com.

Rates rise for Waikato Waikato District Council’s first rates notices of the financial year hit mailboxes across Hautapu, Matangi and Tamahere this week, notifying residents of a general rates increase of 5.19 per cent. “Individual rate increases will vary depending on your property type, value and location and the services that are available to you,” Waikato District Council Chief Executive Gavin Ion said. Some of the 30,000 properties in the district will also face an increase in targeted rates for council services in their area (such as water assets, community halls, rubbish and recycling). The exact amounts depends on their location. Ion said the biggest targeted rates increase this year is for those who receive a solid waste collection.

“It’s important to remember that you only pay a targeted rate if you have access to these services,” he said, confirming that the rates were approved at an extraordinary council meeting in late June, and consulted on and approved through the Long Term Plan for 2018 – 2028. With Waipa District Council announcing an average rates rise of 3.7 per cent in June, and Otorohanga District Council confirming their rates rise of 3.21 per cent, Mr Ion said Waikato District Council’s increase by 5.19 per cent, in addition to increased targeted rates, simply reflected the need to serve more facilities and more people to service in a growing district. “Being a largely rural district also has its limitations as we have

greater distances to cover with a smaller population than the likes of a city. Our population is growing though, so over the next few years there will be more ratepayers to cover this cost.” The announcement of the rates increase follows a $40,000 mistake by Council contractors last month when the curbing for a roading project on Birchwood Lane in Tamahere was put in at the wrong height, and had to be ripped up and redone. It increased the total project cost from $350,000 to $390,000. The council admitted it would simply have to absorb the cost. Ion said Waikato district ratepayers can use the Rating Information Database online at www. waikatodistrict.govt.nz/RID to see how much their rates will be for this financial year.

The Tamahere Park project cost ratepayers $2.5m – paid for with a targeted rate for the Tamahere Ward. The latest rates announcement from Waikato District Council will see several targeted rates increases in addition to the general rates increase of 5.19 per cent.

    Elections 2019

Waipa residents are slowly but surely putting their hand up in the running for council or community board. Nominations opened two weeks ago, and will close in another two week’s time. As of Tuesday morning, five nominations had been made. That included three current councillors – Hazel Barnes and Marcus Gower running for the Te Awamutu Ward, and deputy mayor Grahame Webber running for the Cambridge Ward. Waipa residents Ron Geck and Steve Grounds have also entered the election race,

both running for the Cambridge Ward. All Waipa District councillors, including Mayor Jim Mylchreest, have indicated they intend to run for council once again, with the exception of Vern Wilson who is retiring, and Sue Milner who is stepping down from Council but still running for the Cambridge Community Board. Judy Bannon is unconfirmed. The final, full list of candidates will be announced on Wednesday, August 21, and voting will take place between September 20 and October 12.

Compare it…

Waikato District Council’s general rates rise of 5.19% for 2019/2020 towers in comparison over Waipa District Council’s rates increase of a 3.7%, and Otorohanga District Council’s increase of 3.21%. Waikato District Council’s new rates will contribute to a total rates income of $96.9m, averaging $1285 per person. The general rates expenditure breaks down as follows: • 39.3% on transport, 20.3% for parks and green spaces • 14% for lifestyle projects • 12.5% for corporate/council leadership • 9% for area offices and other properties • 2.9% for grants and donations • 0.9% on water management in public places • 0.7% for refuse in public areas. Expenditure for Waipa District Council’s 2018 – 19 year, which generated $59.6 million at an average of $1103 per person, included: • 28.5% on community facilities • 20.5% on roading • 17.7% on water • 11.8% on governance • 11.7% on wastewater • 5.5% on storm water • 3.9% on environmental services • 0.4% on support services. Otorohanga’s total rates income for 2018/19 of $12,550,000 averages $1224 per person, and covers: • 39.4% on roading • 17.9% on community services • 15.5% on administration • 12.4% on water supply • 6.3% on regulatory services • 3.9% on waste water • 2.8% on community and economic development • 1.4% on storm water • 0.3% on flood protection.

The opportunity to run for council is still open, with nominations closing on August 16. Waipa residents can enter in the running for the Waipa District Council, the Cambridge or Te Awamutu Community Boards, or for Waikato Regional Council. For up-to-date information on the local elections head to www.waipadc.govt.nz/ our-council/Elections. The official results of the election will be declared sometime between October 17 and 23.

A funeral service is important for two reasons 1. A funeral gives people a chance to share their feelings while being supported by family, friends and others in the community who have known the person that has died. 2. It’s also a time to celebrate the life of that person, to hear stories, make tributes and

share memories; the good times and funny moments, their favourite music and unique contributions he or she has made. Let us guide and support you in your time of need with dignity and sincerity, honouring the person you are farewelling.

Lacrosse star heads to US Amber Hope departed New Zealand this week embarking on a university stint in the United States. The Waikato Lacrosse star was awarded a full lacrosse scholarship by Northern Michigan University after her application and videos of her lacrosse skills caught the eye of the recruitment team. Set to begin her studies next month, the former Cambridge High School student will complete a four-year environmental sciences degree as well as take part in the university lacrosse programme. She said she hopes to make the most of the experience in the US and improve and develop her lacrosse skills. “There isn’t much higher level lacrosse here in New Zealand, so it will be great to go over there and have the opportunity to play the game at a higher level,” she said. Unlike many of her peers, Hope did not pick up a lacrosse stick until Year 11 at school but was soon selected for the highly competitive Cambridge High School Premier lacrosse team that same year. Since then she has gone on to play for the Waikato under 18 and Waikato senior women’s teams, and represented New Zealand as part of the Women’s Under 23s lacrosse team which won bronze at the 2019 Asia Pacific Lacrosse Champs. “If Dean (Forman, coach) hadn’t put me in the Cambridge High School Premier team as a Year 11, I probably wouldn’t have played lacrosse at all!” she quipped. Amber is the third Cambridge High School student to head to the United States on a full lacrosse scholarship. She follows trailblazer Melissa Gratwicke who went to the University of Hartford in Connecticut in 2017, and Alannah Mouat who was accepted at St Joseph’s in Pennsylvania last year.

New works under spotlight at Hamilton Book Month By Sophie Iremonger

Cambridge author Nicky Webber will introduce her new book at the Hamilton Book Month next weekend. Featuring at the Local Authors event on August 10, Nicky will share details on her latest book In the Deep End – a contemporary romance about two couples who are best friends – and will be available to sign copies at the end. The new book follows the release of No Ordinary Man earlier this year, which chronicles the secret double life of a WWII Anzac soldier. “My writing focuses on ordinary people living extraordinary lives,” Nicky explained. “My genre is fast-paced intrigue and bucking conventional wisdom. “Readers say they’re un-put-downable.” The latest story delves into the past of the four main characters, unfolding events with a sense of urgency as they confront the impact of a lie that threatens to break them apart. Amira Davis, the main protagonist, takes readers on her emotional journey recounting a long-term love affair with her husband’s best friend, Alex Jones. As the characterisation of the two families develops, the reader learns about the secret lies that conflict with outward appearances. A complicated premise dissects the deceit and betrayal and doesn’t let anyone off the hook. Out for two months, the book is receiving five star reviews online and work is already underway on a sequel aimed for release by the end of the year. Both of the Cambridge author’s published books are available at Paper Plus Cambridge or through Amazon. A writer of subjects which push the social “norm”, Nicky said she loves topics which challenge social convention and take readers on an emotional journey; confronting their thinking, making them laugh at life and think about what they would do given a similar

situation. “That’s the intrigue that keeps readers turning the pages,” she said. The Local Authors event in the Hamilton Book Month kicks off at 11.30am next Saturday, August 10, running until about 1pm, at Trust Waikato, 4 Little London Lane, Hamilton. There, Nicky Webber will talk about In the Deep End and No Ordinary Man and will be available for book signing afterwards. For a complete list of events in the Hamilton Book Month, go to www.hamiltonbookmonth.com. Cambridge News has a signed copy of Nicky Webber’s latest book In the Deep End to give away. Just send your full name and contact number to sophie@goodlocal.nz no later than 9am on Tuesday, August 6.

Honouring the troops

Cambridge revisited its military roots last Saturday with a parade on the town hall plaza marking the 150th anniversary of the Waikato Mounted Rifles. The July 27 commemoration was organised by Regimental Sergeant Major Dave Freyer and addressed by the Waikato Mounted Rifles retired Commanding Officer, Major Simon Marriott. The reviewing officer was Colonel Glen King, Regimental Colonel for the Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps (RNZAC). Waipa District Mayor Jim Mylchreest was among invited guests. In his address, Major Simon Marriott said: “Almost exactly 150 years ago, the following notice appeared in the New Zealand Gazette: ‘His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to accept the services of The Cambridge Mounted Rangers Volunteers. Date of acceptance, 24th July, 1869’. “And so began the life of the first mounted unit to be raised in the Waikato, and thus the direct military forebears of the present day Waikato Mounted Rifles.” The Cambridge Mounted Rangers Volunteers disbanded a year later, in 1870, but regrouped soon afterwards as the Cambridge Cavalry Volunteers. The Te Awamutu Cavalry Volunteers followed in 1871 and the Hamilton Cavalry Volunteers in 1880. Maj Marriott said this led to the creation of the Waikato Mounted Rifle Volunteers in 1897, and to the 4th (Waikato) Mounted Rifles in 1911 when New Zealand’s Volunteer Force was superseded by the Territorial Force. “Mounted riflemen from the Waikato have served in all the overseas conflicts in which New Zealanders have fought. In the course of writing our regimental history, which he called Waikato Troopers, Richard Stowers uncovered the precise number of casualties suffered by Waikato men while serving in the New Zealand Mounted Rifles during the Anglo-Boer War, and later in the First World War. Eight died in South Africa; 74 at Gallipoli, and 42 in Sinai and Palestine. There were 158 wounded on Gallipoli and in the Middle East. “It is sadly impossible to discover the exact losses of former Waikato Mounted Rifles servicemen during the Second World War, for unlike in the First World War, the regiment did

not send a formed service squadron overseas during the conflict. Aside from the Divisional Cavalry Regiment (Div Cav), to which all nine mounted rifles regiments then in existence contributed, Waikato mounted riflemen were drafted as reinforcements, mainly to armoured units, but also to the infantry and some to the navy and air force. We do know that 29 former Waikato Mounted Rifles soldiers were killed in action with the Div Cav and a further 14 died in other units, but the list is incomplete.” Maj Marriott said some “remarkable characters” had serviced in the Waikato Mounted Rifles, among them Irish-born Trooper William Mahood who served in the Boer War with the 1st New Zealand Contingent. He was recognised for his bravery and thought to be the oldest Kiwi trooper on enlistment, declaring he was 36 when he was actually 53. Another, Cambridge’s Trooper Cocky Swayne, fought at Gallipoli and was wounded several times before going on to serve in France and being commissioned. Trooper Frank Jopling served with the Waikato Mounted Rifles prior to WW2, then joined the Div Cav in 1939. When in Egypt with the Long Range Desert Group the following year, he was wounded and attempted to escape across the desert on foot before being recaptured – he and another soldier had covered 240km in 12 days of extreme hardship. Captain Jim Wynyard of Te Awamutu was one of three brothers who served in the Waikato Mounted Rifles. He was an All Black, playing in Britain, Canada and Australia, before being killed in action with the Div Cav at the Battle of Alamein in 1942. Maj Marriott said the unit was awarded a total of 30 battle honours from the Boer War, and both the World Wars. He said that today’s Squadron personnel, now based in Hamilton, continue the tradition of voluntary military service and have, since 2000, served in East Timor, the Solomon Islands, South Korea and Afghanistan.” A painting by former official Defence Force artist Matt Gauldie, commissioned to mark the 150th anniversary, was unveiled at the end of the ceremony. The Cambridge Brass Band played at the parade and did the catering.

Waipa architect in the St John provides cover running for award By Viv Posselt

By Steph Bell-Jenkins

Two years after winning Home Magazine’s Home of the Year, Cambridge architect Christopher Beer has been shortlisted for another major national award. In May Chris won an award in the 2019 Waikato/Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards’ interior category for his modernisation of Te Awamutu’s Spectrum building. Now the Market St building has been shortlisted in the same category for the New Zealand Institute of Architects’ national awards. “It would be a big deal to win,” said Chris, who plans to attend November’s awards ceremony in Queenstown. “The national awards are open to buildings completed in the past year and 45 buildings have been shortlisted from the 187 local award winners, so just getting this far is great. “It’s good to get recognition for the work we’ve been doing and it’s a really positive thing for the owners because they’ve put in a lot of time, money and effort into the building.” Mike O’Connor and Shona Quinlan of Spectrum Group, whose company owns and manages dairy farms throughout the country, were determined to preserve the original character of the building when they bought it to house their new offices two years ago. Chris was commissioned to save the near derelict building, strengthening its original shell and creating a sleek, modern interior. “Their commitment to preserving its original character was a big plus for the community and for retaining central Te

Awamutu’s historic feeling,” Chris said. “It has also contributed to the success of the design because it allows the new, modern elements of the design to be played off the old.” The building was erected around 1940, originally comprising three small, brickwalled shops joined at the rear by lean-to extensions and a concrete-walled warehouse. “We retained the Market St shop-fronts and all the exterior walls of the building and essentially stripped everything else out and rebuilt it from the ground up inside the walls,” Chris said. “It’s a nice building to be inside. The office feels quite domestic and comfortable; you get the feeling it could be a house or an apartment.” The Spectrum building is one of only five around New Zealand listed in the interior architecture category of this year’s New Zealand Architecture Awards.

Cambridge St John youth members presented Operation Cover-Up with a colourful blanket they had crocheted for children living in orphanages in Eastern Europe. The blanket then went on view at Operation Cover-Up’s August display at the Cambridge Baptist Church before being shipped overseas with hundreds of other knitted and crocheted items made by locals. Karena Rix, one of the managers of the Cambridge St John Youth Programmes, said most of the cadets had never crocheted before. “It took them two full terms to complete the blanket, roughly about six months,” she said.

“They all contributed to it in some way, either making squares to a specified size, or joining them up.” Karena said the project effectively fulfilled two St John youth briefs – one was to work towards a hobbies badge, and the other to do something for someone else, something that aligned with core St John values. “We’d like to do more projects like this. It is important for our youth members to be seen in our community as doing things for others.” The blanket was presented on July 23 to local Operation Cover-Up organisers, Donna Dillon and her parents Dennys and Pat Smith. The cadets were also told about what Operation Cover-Up did and watched a video of children in Eastern Europe receiving their blankets.

Keeping cycling in the family By Sophie Iremonger

Cambridge has become a hub for cycling excellence in recent years, with the likes of the Avantidrome and Cycling New Zealand setting root and arguably putting Cambridge on the map as the country’s cycling capital. These days it doesn’t take long to spot a cyclist on our roads. But it seems the town’s newfound hunger for cycling isn’t in the water, or in the air, sometimes it’s in the family. Two sets of sisters at Cambridge High School are a prime example, toting a number of titles and medals to their family names. Between the four of them they earned 17 medals and seven trophies at the North Island schools cycling champs held in Cambridge last month. For Mya and Keisha Anderson, Year 12 and 10 sisters at Cambridge High, it’s a matter of supporting each other, with a little sibling rivalry in there too. “We do feed off each other, especially knowing that your younger sister is there on your tail,” Mya laughed. “It’s cool to be an inspiration for your younger sister. … and we really learn from each other too.” “It’s good that we can talk to each other, about racing tactics and advice on what to do in races,” added Keisha, who managed to beat her older sister in two races at the recent national track series. “I was super happy for her,” said Mya, an Oceania silver medallist and national performance hub rider, admitting if she’s going to lose to someone, it had best be her sister. “I guess you watch out for each other a bit more on the track, she’s not just another competitor when I’m riding with her,” she said. “She’s quite determined,” Keisha added, surprised Mya had done so well at the North Island champs after a bout of sickness beforehand. “She wants it and she just goes for it. She always pulls though.” “I think your sister helps you a lot to improve,” said Caoilinn Gray, a Year 7 Cambridge Middle School student who combined with her Year 9 Cambridge High School sister Seana earned eight medals and trophies at the North Island champs. They’ve already competed against each other too, in triathlon and swimming, but look forward to racing each

Recycling crates inspire creativity

Cambridge resident Isabelle Verriere has received the runners up prize in Waipa District Council’s Great Crate Challenge after turning her old blue crate into a box for her rhubarb to grow. First prize went to Te Awamutu 12 and 13 year old cousins Cooper and Baxter Scott who turned their crates into a and “speedy” wheelie bin to push each other, and their dog Hudson, up and down the driveway. Third prize was taken out by Carol Oates who reused her crate as a growing box for plants. The competition follows Council’s switch to a new recycling service, making the old blue recycling crates redundant. The competition then provided encouragement for residents to find a new use for their old crates. Council waste minimisation officer Sally Fraser said the blue recycling crates had proven a hit with the community who turned up in large numbers at Council’s two crate drop off days held over the weekend, to collect unwanted crates. “We had a fantastic turn out at both events of people

wanting to grab some extra crates. In Te Awamutu about 250 were dropped off and they were all given new homes by keen gardeners and people looking for storage options. In Cambridge we had just under 200, almost all of which were rehomed. “Recycling hard plastic is tricky so the fewer we need

to recycle the better. I would encourage anyone who would still like to rehome their crates to check our Facebook page for others who may be looking for some or contact local schools.” For ideas on how to reuse the old crates visit waipadc. govt.nz/bluecrates.

Volunteering with children A.O.K.

By Steph Bell-Jenkins

Signing my family up for new things can be scary. Understandably, my three boys (all aged under 10) are sometimes reluctant to try stuff that will push them outside their comfort zones. And just knowing how much energy it will take for my husband and I to withstand their protests and get everyone out the door is enough to put me off completely. The extra push I needed to get involved with Act of Kindness came from wanting to support my friend Rebecca Broadbent, who founded this awesome Cambridge organisation two years ago. Like me, Bex is a mum of three beautiful, boisterous, energetic young sons. In a world where we’re constantly bombarded by reports of social injustice and a looming environmental crisis, she wanted to find a way her family – and others – could “stand up, do what is right, and be part of the solution”. So she started A.O.K. to help young people

and their families find volunteering opportunities in the Waipa community. Since then we have been part of four A.O.K. projects, and each one has made me feel like a better parent and a better person. Our recent experience planting trees with Act of Kindness was a perfect example. We had a total blast, joining 25 other volunteers to plant more than 1000 native trees, flaxes and grasses beside the Karapiro section of the Waikato River Trail. This section lies about 20 minutes south of Cambridge, stretching from the Pokaiwhenua Bridge car park on Horahora Rd to Arapuni Village. Our planting spot was just past the car park, in a grassy reserve that slopes gently down to the Waikato River. Just being in this gorgeous place, where the trail meanders through lush green farm paddocks, was lovely. Bex’s focus with A.O.K. is on sourcing volunteer work children will enjoy and she did a fantastic job coordinating this with Waikato River Trails general

manager Glyn Wooller. Glyn was super friendly and, to our delight, had arranged to have all the holes dug before we arrived. All we had to do was drop in a fertiliser tablet, remove the plastic from the plants, loosen their roots and fit them snugly into the soil. I was stoked with the kids’ enthusiasm as they got stuck in, tallying up their plantings and running back and forth to fill their pockets with fertiliser tablets. They knew children from two other families so had a brilliant time chatting and laughing, but working hard too. We even got a delicious morning tea and prize giveaway from Lake District Adventures, a business that runs glowworm tours in the area. As our family drove home we were all on a high. We’d spent quality time together in the fresh air and sunshine, met new people and done something to help our local community and our planet. If you’d like to get involved with A.O.K. please visit www.actofkindness. co.nz.

Card club shows how to bridge the gap

Tired of the lines on your face?

The Cambridge Bridge Club recently celebrated the graduation of three English Language Partners students who are members of the club. Two sisters from South Korea, Lucy Lee and Mina Lee, together with Johnny Wong from Hong Kong successfully completed the 10 week course. It marks the club’s second set of graduates from the organisation, which helps new New Zealanders to integrate into Kiwi life. The initiative has now seen 10 English language students join their local bridge club. “Integrating into a new society is not easy. People can find themselves up against prejudice and hitting cultural barriers. The biggest barrier is language,” explained Jane Stearns, a bridge tutor at the Cambridge club and ELP home tutor. “The success of the programme at bridge clubs is as a result of the game of bridge being a numbers game, as well as and clubs being keen to have new members join them. Most adult immigrants have a good understanding of numbers ahead of words. “This means they can understand the game, and learning it and playing at a local club gives them a stepping stone into the Kiwi community and opportunity to make friendships and find a support network.

“The scheme has proven to be a win-win – clubs have new members, and English students have friendly and willing English speakers to practise their language with.” Mina’s ELP home tutor here in Cambridge, Clive Garrish, was at the club to support his student during the recent graduation. Known for his work at the Gaslight Theatre, Clive invited the students to the recent production of Glide Time, in which he starred. “They thoroughly enjoyed the experience,” said Clive. “Although Kiwi slang is the hardest for any non-English speaker to master, I was able to give them the script to be able to follow the written words and their outing has proven a great source of new vocabulary and discussion at our lessons. “Joining a club, becoming part of the community they now live in really helps improve their language levels.” Jane said people living in the community who don’t speak English as their first language may feel isolated and lonely, and locals who can extend a hand of friendship and put them in touch with English Language Partners could help to transform their lives. Dancers want new blood Scottish country dancing is not only an amazingly simple and excellent form of exercise, it is also a very social way of learning new and old dances in an extremely friendly and relaxed atmosphere. If you happen to walk past St Andrew’s Church hall on a Wednesday evening, you will more than likely hear the fun and the laughter, along with the lively and inspirational Scottish music, coming from inside. Scottish country dancing is great for anyone of any age, shape and size – men, women and children. Not only is country dancing enjoyable, recent studies undertaken by the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, has shown that it’s an effective form of recreational exercise. As well as being absolutely beneficial to the cardiovascular system, country dancing is great for keeping the mind active and helping to retain healthy bones. In New Zealand, there are many dancers aged 80 and above still actively dancing and they do keep the younger ones on their toes with their sharp minds and their overall agility. However, the Cambridge Club is wanting to grow its membership and

encourage more people to come along and have a go at this amazing form of dancing. The new round of beginner’s lessons started on Wednesday at St Andrew’s Church hall. It doesn’t matter what level of fitness you have, whether you are a child, young adult, older adult, male or female. The Cambridge SCD Club is very friendly and will welcome you with open arms. The beginners’ lessons cost $30 for eight weeks of excellent tuition and if beginners decide that this is a great activity then they are able to carry on and join in with

the members who have been dancing for quite a while, on club nights. One of our newer members made a comment to her husband at club on Wednesday night along the lines of “Whoever thought we would be taking up dancing when we retired!” and they really are enjoying themselves. So, come along, have a go and find out for yourself, just how easy it is to get fit, make new friends and most importantly of all, have a lot of fun. Tough racing at BMX worlds

Cambridge’s BMX racers competing at the world BMX championships in Belgium have come away with good results, but not good enough according to the dedicated racers. “That was way worse than last year,” said Tim Ferguson, who made a valiant defence of his men’s 35+ title after winning it in Azerbaijan 12 months ago. “I trained harder but that was way harder.” The Cambridge BMX racer took the silver medal behind Colombian rider Gabriel Vallejo, adding the sixth medal to the New Zealand team tally. After three qualifying motos Ferguson won his eighth and quarterfinals, before finishing third in his semifinal. Heading into the final race he elected to choose the outside lane draw to stay away from the almost inevitable first corner crash, and made a great start almost getting the holeshot into the first corner, only to be denied

Loss in lacrosse

Cambridge High School’s boys lacrosse team was beaten 9-8 by Hamilton Boys High last weekend. The team will aim to bounce back this weekend when it plays Te Awamutu College again in the second round of the round-robin. Back from a three week break, they entered last weekend’s game in third place on the table with four points, just behind Hamilton Boys and Te Awamutu College both on six points. Hamilton Boys scored the first goal. Despite Cambridge answering back with their own, the Hamilton players always stayed ahead. Cambridge closed the gap in the last five minutes reducing the deficit from three to one goal. Alistair Hermon was Cambridge’s player of the day.

by Vallejo who he then tracked to the finish, never quite getting close enough to attempt a passing manoeuvre. A shattered Ferguson had just completed seven races in four hours. Ferguson had every reason to be exhausted racing in the 35-degree heat on Sunday (NZ time), which was six degrees cooler than the Belgium record recorded the day before. Day two of the competition on Thursday was just as scorching at 39 degrees, but it didn’t stop the resilience of 12-year-old Lily Greenough. The Cambridge BMX rider who recently captained a successful New Zealand Mighty 11s team entered the competition as the world number 3 in her age group from last year’s world championships. She hit the ground running in her first moto so to speak – her foot slipped from the pedal and hit the ground, twisting her ankle. She kept racing though, with her foot elevated on ice between races, and managed a succession of second and third places before finally succumbing to the injury and placing fifth in her semi-final, just missing out on a place in the main event. Meanwhile Cambridge’s six-time world champion BMX star Leila Walker, who has consecutively won the world title for her age group six years in a row up to 2018, was unable to make it seven for seven competing in the 14 year old girls division. She finished eighth overall after an unbeaten day of racing through motos, quarterfinals and the semifinal. In the final she raced neck and neck with Dutch rider Lissi van Schijndel down the first straight. The pair touched as they hurtled into the first jump on the second straight, and it was enough to unbalance Walker. She then lost momentum and control of her bike and crashed. Rico D’Anvers and Tasman Wakelin, Cambridge’s only junior elite riders at the event, made it through to the

semifinals and quarterfinals respectively. D’Anvers qualified top in his group with two wins and a third in the motos. After a fourth place in the quarterfinal he was taken out by a fallen rider in the semifinal. His fellow Performance Hub rider Tasman Wakelin qualified fourth in his moto

group but was washed out on a slippery corner in his quarterfinal. Cambridge-based BMX rider Sarah Walker, who won the elite world title in 2009, was competing in the elite women’s division alongside Te Awamutu’s Rebecca Petch and the pair both made it through to the quarter finals.

Two yellows spoil Reds day

Cambridge’s hopes of winning promotion to Northern League football’s first division have been dashed. With five games remaining, the Reds have fallen nine competition points behind the two leading clubs, meaning the club is almost certain to start 2020 in the Lotto NRFL second division again. Cambridge dropped off the pace to win promotion with a home loss last weekend while all their rivals won. A first-half dismissal proved the turning point for Cambridge as they were beaten 4-0 at John Kerkhof Park by an in-form Albany United. With barely a third of the game gone, Reds midfielder Marcelo Sosa was given a second yellow card, followed by his marching orders, when the game was tied 0-0. From the resulting free-kick Albany’s Marc Porter scored. It was always going to be tough from there and Albany took advantage of having the extra man to outplay the home side for most of the remaining fixture. Albany doubled their lead early in the second half when Damien Pos.: Position MP: Matches played W: Wins D: Draws L Mosquera scored thedifference season. GF: Goals for GA: Goals against his first of GD: Goal Pts: Points He wasn’t content with that and completed his hat-trick before the end of the game which both teams finished Football - Table GCFCOMET - New Zealandshortly with 10 men after an Albany saw a player dismissed for two yellow cards as well. For Albany, who stay in third place on the table, it was a strong result before they travel to Napier next weekend for Guild Commended Framer a quarter-final ISPS Handa Chatham Cup tie against Napier Fine Art Trade Guild U.K. City Rovers. Ironically, Mosquera scored an extra-time winner for Member NZ Institute of Professional Framers Eastern Suburbs in the 2015 final against City Rovers. This weekend Cambridge travel to Auckland to play “The Framer’s role is to protect artwork against Onehunga Mangere. In last Saturday’s early game an own goal almost on both atmospheric conditions and future handling, the stroke of half-time was all that separated Cambridge’s and to enhance it’s aesthetic qualities.” Reserves in their match against fourth-placed Albany. The goal, when Jack Sickelmore put into his own net after 43 minutes, gave the visiting Aucklanders three points in an otherwise level encounter. The result sees Cambridge stay in 10th spot on the second division reserves competition table. Cambridge’s fixture in the WaiBOP Championship against Tauranga City was postponed. In Waikato Division 3, Cambridge D1s came off second best when they crashed 6-0 to Northern United’s Debacles at Hamilton’s Discovery Park. In Waikato Division 4, Cambridge headed to Hamilton to play mid-table Waikato Unicol at the University grounds but returned home with a 4-1 loss, a score that didn’t reflect the 11 Cowley Drive balance of play. Cambridge had two ‘goals’ disallowed in an incidentCAMBRIDGE packed match that with a bit of fortune could have seen the D2s sneak a draw. Scorer for Cambridge was Liam Storey with his second jachrisp@hotmail.com goal in two weeks. – Josh Easby

OUR NEXT REPORTER

Do you have the ‘write’ stuff?

The Te Awamutu News is a new and exciting weekly community newspaper independently owned and with a passion for serving the Te Awamutu/ Otorohanga community. Caitlan Johnston is heading overseas and we are looking for the journalist who will take her place. Does the following sound like you? If so, we want to hear from you. • I always listen to news on radio and read news online and in print. • I think on my feet, I can produce copy quickly and accurately – and I am a skilled interviewer. • I’m comfortable taking pictures. • I know my community – from sports clubs to local body politicians. • I’m computer literate and proficient with MS Office. The new Te Awamutu News reporter will report to the news editor and discuss job assignments, how stories will be presented and how to make the most of resources available. This position will be a 40-hour a week role, but the hours will be flexible and often determined by the timing of events and the availability of contacts. It is expected the successful applicant will have had experience in working in media. This is an all-rounder position – the successful applicant will generate stories and be adept at reworking supplied copy and assist with proof reading. This position will require the reporter to be out in the field regularly, but also able to work collegially with a small team of sales and layout staff. Applicants for this position must have NZ residency or a valid NZ work visa. You will need a reliable vehicle and a clean driver’s licence.
