Jim’s back

“One day at a time” for shooting victim By Sophie Iremonger

Jim Zheng is back at the helm of the Karapiro Café and Gifts store, four months after being shot there. “I think I’m lucky I didn’t die,” the 48-year-old told the Cambridge News. Zheng revealed he still had a bullet lodged in his head as a result of the Anzac Day shooting. Doctors, who have been surprised at the speed of his recovery, say it would be too dangerous to remove it. He says his focus now is taking one day at a time as he picks up light jobs around the roadside café, which he has owned with wife Cindy for three years. He is committed to keeping the business going. “It is a change for me, before I thought I could do every job in the shop, I liked to be fast, but now I have to be slower. I just need to carry on. That’s what the family needs to go ahead. “We have three children, we need to support the family. We’ll just see what happens next.” Zheng continues to have numbness on the front left side of his head, and occasional memory mixups. He had considered returning to Auckland, or closer to Cambridge, where recovery could be better supported - but he’s found a place in the Karapiro community as the fourth owner of the 50-year-old café and doesn’t want to leave. “I want to stay here, but this is a hard time for us.” Jim said his customers and the community had been very supportive, leaving flowers and messages of support. ‘Bin-spectors’ go Glenn Miller Orchestra to on recycling runs perform

Recycling “inspectors” are checking kerbside recycling bins as part of the revamped service being trialled by Waipa District Council and recycling contractors Metallic Sweeping. They will look in roadside wheelie bins for contaminated material, such as dirty or incorrectly recycled items, and offending bins will not be collected. The bins came into use on July 1 – households get two, a 240-litre bin for household plastics, cans, tins, paper and cardboard – and a 140-litre bin for glass bottles and jars. Council operations team leader Jennifer Braithwaite said Waipā’s new kerbside recycling service had been a big success, but non-recyclable items and dirty recyclables were being placed in the bins. “These items will contaminate good clean recycling which can lead to a whole truck of otherwise good material going to landfill,” she said. “It is really important we get this right so we can deliver a valuable and

efficient service to our residents.” The recycling inspectors will wear high visibility vests and ride scooters with flashing lights so they can be easily spotted. Ms Braithwaite said the service was new and would take time getting used to. “Some mistakes are probably unintentional - like putting milk cartons into mixed recycling bins. While cartons may look like cardboard, they have a thin layer of plastic inside making the two materials impossible to separate and therefore unrecyclable.” The council has provided information online in the form of a “recycling game” which invites readers to test their knowledge. The information can be found at www.recyclewaipa.co.nz. It also has an educational video which covers what can and can’t be recycled – and explains why – on its Facebook page. The video points out that recycled products in Waipā are sorted by “local people” and some parts are sorted by hand “so keep it clean”.

The golden era of 1940’s swing is coming to the Waikato next month with the Glenn Miller Orchestra bringing their ‘Greatest Hits’ show to Hamilton’s Claudelands Arena on September 6. The show will include all of the old favourites by the 82-year-old band, from In the Mood and Chattanooga Choo-Choo to Moonlight Serenade and many morce. Glenn Miller, a leader of the big band swing era, disappeared in poor weather over the English Channel in 1944 on a flight to France to entertain US troops. But his orchestra still continues the legacy, having been revived in the 1980s by one of the oldest working members of the Glenn Miller Band, Musical Director Rick Gerber. “The Glenn Miller Orchestra offers a colourful and flamboyant evening filled with the fun and nostalgia of the 30s and 40s,” said Gerber. “Our unique jazz sound is sought all around the world and in addition to recreating the golden era of swing, we bring to life the colour, costumes and spirit.” Despite only living to the age of 40, Miller and his band achieve 69 Top Ten Hits and 16 number one singles in America. The classic favourite, In the Mood, sat at number one for 30 weeks straight on the US Billboard charts and, in total, Miller’s songs spent 664 weeks on the charts. Three of his posthumous albums also reached number one. “There’s no expression of freedom quite so sincere as music… and a band ought to have a sound all of its own. It ought to have a personality,” Miller once said. The Hamilton show on September 6 will see patrons dine and swing the night away in a 40’s style dinner-dance, and also offers theatre seating for those who simply wish to tap their feet to the music. Tickets are available at ticketek.co.nz or by phoning 0800 842 538. Cambridge News has four tickets to give away to the show. Three vacancies remained for entries into the Te Awamutu Community Subdivision, where only Angela Holt, a member of the Te Awamutu Community Board, has entered. No nominations have been made for the Kakepuku Community Subdivision, and Mike Montgomerie appears to be unopposed entering the Maungatautari Community Subdivision. Meanwhile two people have entered to be our local representatives for the Waikato Regional Council under the Waipā  -  King Country General Constituency, which has two vacancies. “They’re lovely people, I love them,” he said. But as a result of the April 25 incident he tended to stick to the safety of his nearby home in the evenings instead of enjoying a social outing or playing badminton with his son at the Cambridge High School gym. “I don’t know why, I just close the cafe and go home and shut the door, and that’s my place,” he said. “So now for me it’s just, after 4 o’clock I just close all the gates, all the doors, it’s like I put myself in the jail. Because before we didn’t do these things.” A 67-year-old Leamington man was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following the Anzac Day incident. The Hamilton District Court was told in May the man, who has interim name suppression, was being cared for at the Henry Rongomau Bennett Centre under the Mental Health Act.

Wet weekend

Cambridge is set for another wet weekend with rain forecast for tomorrow and Sunday. It follows a downpour over last weekend with 37.5 mls of rainfall recorded at the Bartons Corner Road Bridge in Te Awamutu. Waikato Regional Council reported 16mls of rainfall on Saturday and 21.5mls on Sunday, more than five times the amount of rainfall the previous weekend. There were no reports of flooding in the district, but Waipa District Council did respond to an incident near Oakshott Rd, north of Pirongia, where a slip was blocking the road.

Sports tournament for good cause By Sophie Iremonger

Battle of the Bridge kicks off in Cambridge tomorrow with an important cause behind it. The community sports tournament – which features netball, tug of war and the iconic Battle of the Bridge rugby game – is hosted alternatively each year between the Hautapu and Leamington rugby clubs, and usually doubles as a fundraiser towards a local project or cause. This year’s event will have an especially significant purpose behind it, raising funds for rugby player Ihaka Mita. The 23-year-old, who has played rugby for the Leamington, Hautapu and Te Awamutu clubs, has stage four spinal cancer. “It will be gold coin donation at the gate to help Ihaka on his road to recovery,” said Dave Peters from the Leamington Rugby Sport Club, which is hosting this year’s event. “Because really the whole purpose of the event is, it’s a fundraising event, and it brings the community together. The whole idea is just to come together,” added Mark Nogaj from the Hautapu club, who resurrected the annual

event in 2013 after it went defunct in the 1990s. “We just thought it would be nice to help the whanau, and if he’s well enough he may come down for a little while as well,” said Dave. The event kicks off at 11am with Cambridge High School playing Matamata in the final of the Waikato secondary schools premier first-fifteen competition, followed by the Leamington vs Hautapu netball game at 12pm. A mixed team of Hautapu and Leamington players will then represent Cambridge in a game against Piako, part of the Stan Meads Cup competition, kicking off at 1pm. Finally the Battle of the Bridge rugby game will kick off at 2.45pm, with the ladies tug of war competition on the field at half time. “We’d like to encourage people to come to the function in the clubrooms afterwards,” said Mark, adding that the Leamington organisers “always put on the meanest feed”. Drinks, courtesy vans and the All Blacks game on the big screen will no doubt top off a great community evening, aided by bouncy castles and an ice cream truck for the kids. Hautapu and Leamington club members Mark Nogaj, Dave Peters, Cam Bourke and Chris Gillies, pictured at “You don’t have to be associated with either the “Battle” grounds, can’t quite agree on who will win Saturday’s game. “It will be decided by who’s playing with the wind,” said Dave. Check out the full report on page 15. one of the clubs, just come along,” said Mark.

Abortion legislation divides regional MPs

By Viv Posselt

Waikato MPs are split in the way they voted on the Abortion Legislation Bill, which passed its first reading on August 8. Taupo MP Louise Upston and Hamilton West MP Tim Macindoe were among the 23 who voted against the bill, while TaranakiKing Country MP Barbara Kuriger, and Hamilton East MP David Bennett were among the 94 MPs who voted in favour. The bill was treated as a conscience issue. It now goes before a select committee before going back to the House for a second reading. The current law, dating back to 1977, places abortion under the Crimes Act. Justice Minister Andrew Little’s bill seeks to

Taupo MP Louise Upston voted against the bill on August 8.

remove it from the criminal law framework and place it under health. “Abortion is the only medical procedure that is still a crime in New Zealand. This bill will modernise the laws. Safe abortion should be treated and regulated as a health issue.” The bill advocates for a woman’s choice to self-refer for an abortion in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, as opposed to the current regime which requires an abortion to be approved by two certifying consultants before proceeding. After 20 weeks, women would have to meet a statutory test by a health practitioner before going ahead. Taupo MP Louise Upston said the legislation needs updating and abortion should be removed from the Crimes Act. “But to have absolutely no requirements, no tests, nothing up to the age of 20 weeks I think is problematic. And part of that is because the Ministry of Health says that a fully-formed baby is at 12 weeks of pregnancy.” Taranaki-King Country MP Barbara Kuriger voted in favour of the bill but expressed concerns about details around the stages of pregnancy referenced. “We need to have an open conversation about that in select committee,” she said. “Women have historically sought abortions and found themselves with serious health issues. We have a process in this country for abortions, and it’s time to take it out of the Crimes Act. Women who find themselves

in tough situations are not criminals. Abortion is a last resort; contraception is my preference.” Hamilton MPs were also divided in their response to the bill. Hamilton East MP David Bennett supported the bill, saying, “it is my instinct that abortion does not belong in the Crimes Act”, while Hamilton West MP Tim Macindoe voted no. He said he was broadly supportive of the legislative framework in place for over 40 years but recognised the need to update and improve some aspects of the existing Act. “I am deeply concerned about some of the proposed changes.

In particular, I’m alarmed at the lack of safeguards in the bill to prevent late-term abortions, and the removal of some of the checks and balances that minimise the risk of a woman being coerced into an abortion, or making a decision without adequate counselling.” The fact no woman has been convicted of a crime for having an abortion meant it was misleading to argue for the bill on the basis of ‘decriminalising’ abortion in New Zealand, he said, adding that given the deeply held views on both sides, he would be open to a referendum on the bill.

Taranaki-King Country MP Barbara Kuriger voted in favour of the bill.

Cambridge in beauty finals By Sophie Iremonger

Cambridge was this week announced a finalist in the Most Beautiful Large Town section of the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards. “We all know which is the most beautiful town in the country, now it’s just got to be made official,” said Philip Coles, one of the coordinators of Cambridge’s entry into the awards. The entry was spearheaded by Destination Cambridge alongside the new Keep Cambridge Beautiful group and the Cambridge Community Board. Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards judges have already put boots on the ground with Heather Saunderson and Michael Van de Elzen visiting Cambridge on Thursday this week. “It will be a tough decision to find a winner,” said Saunderson. “It’s great to see such amazing environmental initiatives.”

Coles said groups in Cambridge are working together to beautify the town, promote zero-waste initiatives and involve residents from all areas of the community. “It’s not just about having beautiful streets and parks, the aim is to demonstrate our wider community as a whole, with initiatives like recycling, street art, kids learning to plant trees, from the young ones right through,” he said. “From our first article about entering the awards (published July 19 in Cambridge News) people have contacted us and said there are some park benches and other things that need a really good clean, so I’m putting these things forward to council to get addressed and help make us look really spotless.” Last year Cambridge was entered into the awards for the first time and made the finals, but lost to Feilding which won for the 16th time. The winners will be announced in Dunedin on October 24.

Dragon boats bring $6 million bonus

Potholes to Piarere

The announcement of up to 5000 breast cancer paddlers coming to Cambridge in 2022 for the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission (IBCPC) already has Cambridge’s sporting and tourism industry experts planning for the big event. The regatta will take place at Mighty River Domain, Lake Karapiro, with other events Liz Stolwyk and side trips centred around Hamilton, Cambridge and the wider Waikato region. “Receiving the news that we would be hosting our first International Dragon Boat event was incredible news for us. This event is something very, very special,” said Liz Stolwyk, CEO of Mighty River Domain at Lake Karapiro. “Breast cancer affects us all in some way and to welcome up to 5000 survivors will be incredible. Over my 15 years at the domain, this means a huge amount to me, my team can deliver hundreds of events but to deliver this event will be one of a kind.” Stolwyk said the organisation had been measuring the impact of events held in the Waipā over the past few years to get a sense of their economic impact, and had found that the larger events could bring in an extra $6 million to the local area over a week. “This event will have a giant impact also on our Waipa towns, especially the accommodation and hospitality sectors,” she said. “With 25 countries and up to 5000 competitors – Cambridge will certainly be painted ‘pink’ for this event. I’m looking forward to working with the community to get in behind this event and make our international visitors feel very welcome.” IBCPC worldwide President Meri Gibson, from Christchurch, described the bid to bring the event to New Zealand as a “massive undertaking”. “Being up against countries from across the globe on various continents made this even more special to win the bid,” she said.

Motorists have complained about State Highway 1 south of Cambridge, saying it has dangerous intersections, increasing use, a high crash rate and a flurry of potholes. “The road down to Rotorua is filled with potholes,” Andrew Breakwell said at last week’s Friendly Forum in Cambridge, hosted by Taupo electorate MP Louse Upston. “I’ve had to get two new tyres.” Upston, who hosted the forum with visiting Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon, agreed. “To be fair the complaints started in the last year of our time in office,” she said. But she added the project to extend the expressway to Piarere was planned, funded and underway when National stepped out of office in 2017. “Any time you hear the government say the Cambridge to Piarere project wasn’t funded, it was. Because land owners were being approached, acquisition of land was underway, it was absolutely there. Basically, the money that was allocated for that, a lot of it will now be spent in Auckland.” Falloon detailed roading projects in his Canterbury patch that got the axe. “I actually feel sorry for NZTA in a lot of ways,” he said. “There were about 10 projects (across New Zealand) that were planned or proposed or underway that were cancelled by the incoming government. And not only that, they also ripped $5 billion out of the state highway network, and funnily enough it’s all going into Auckland railway and cycle way projects. So, the money that

By Sophie Iremonger

comes from petrol tax and your road user charges is now being sent off to Auckland for public transport projects, instead of being spent on roads. “And so, with the potholes and what have you, it literally is for that reason. Because they have less money now to not only spend on those upgrades that we need, but also to spend on maintenance.” Community board member Philip Coles highlighted local efforts to make the SH1 road safer, including meeting with the NZTA to get warning signs and lights introduced at the Karapiro Rd intersection with State Highway 1/ Tirau Rd. “When National come back in its going to take years to get that (expressway extension) project back up and running again with the funding and the people required. So, for now we’re just wanting some safety

measures to slow people down at those intersections (Karapiro Rd and SH29). When I met with NZTA last month out at Karapiro, it was really disturbing to hear that they’ve got no funding at all in the budget to put safety features in at that intersection.” Roger Gordon stood and said the Hobbiton movie set had just gained resource consent to increase visitor numbers at the site to a million. “They have made a tremendous contribution to this area… but because of that, traffic is going to increase even greater than what is planned. So, I think there is a real need to get something done on that Piarere section.” “The Hobbiton visitors come out of that intersection at the Mobil garage too,” said Coles. “We’ve got schools, two quarries that use that intersection, and the customers at the Mobil… and there’s no safety measures at all.”

Roger Gordon asked MPs about what could be done to make SH1 south of Cambridge safer.

Shutters drawn on 56 years with fire service By Viv Posselt

After 56 years, 9188 callouts and multiple awards, Winston Steen has stepped away from an active role with the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Brigade. It was time, he says. He’s given a great deal to the community, had some ‘good saves’ and taken an enviable family legacy to the next level. When added to the 40 years’ service his father Tom Steen gave to the brigade, and the 31 from Winston’s brother Ken, the Steen family have put in a remarkable 127 years to helping others in their community. “I think it’s probably one of the longest tenures by a single family,” Winston said with quiet pride. He is proud, too, of “the exceptionally talented group” that makes up what he describes as one of the best brigades in the country, and insists that much of the kudos must go to chief fire officer Don Gerrand, and to the other firefighters, wives and girlfriends who have provided steadfast support through the years. “We couldn’t do what we do without them, and what an honour it has been to be associated with everyone over my time.” It was in November 1963 that Winston joined the brigade. He was working at Steen & Morrow, the business started by his father, and found himself helping at the brigade’s annual fireworks fundraiser. “In that first month, I attended five callouts, and in my first

year, a total of 72. Now, we get around 340 – I think the peak has been 380 a year. My first callout was to a fire in Jonathan Foley’s photography shop in Duke Street, and the biggest was probably the one out at St Peter’s School in April 1984 … they lost a complete block of rooms.” Other significant fires he attended include St Andrew’s Church in the early 1960s, Paramount in Carter’s Flat, Hamilton Hotel in Frankton and the Tamahere Coolstore fire in 2008. There have been fires in schools and churches, rescues of dogs down banks, a cow down a well and, of course, cats up trees. “You never see a dead cat up a tree,” he reasoned with a smile. There was also a run of arsons at one stage, but it was when the fire service signed up to respond to St John calls around 2015 that the tempo changed. Did that move increase the callout rate? Winston said: “Hell yeah! In that first year there were 50 callouts just for the ambulance. It changed things for sure.” He’s been deputy chief fire officer since 2001 and has worked with four chief fire officers – Jack Morris, Gordon Brunskill, Graham Howarth, and since 1994, Don Gerrand. Winston began by wanting to do something for his community; he’s deeply grateful to his family and the staff at Steen & Morrow who’ve enabled him to do that. Tickets for the 2019 Rotary Cambridge Garden Festival in November have gone on sale today. Project leader and Rotarian Carey Church said excitement was building for this year’s festival. The garden festival was launched last year as a prime Rotary Cambridge fundraiser and attracted more than 1000 visitors to 10 gardens. It raised almost $30,000 for three charities – the Rotary Club

last year’s event and included more country gardens in 2019. There will also be more to buy on the day, and more refreshments available. Artworks will be available at the two ‘Art in the Garden’ sites, and garden art suppliers will have their products available for purchase at one of the gardens on view. “People will be able to prepurchase picnic lunches to take with them as they go around the gardens,” said Ms Church. “The other change we are making this

year is that the gardens won’t be open to anyone under 16, but we do have tickets for 16 to 18-yearolds at a reduced rate. Almost all the gardens on display will be wheelchair accessible.” From August 23, a blog article will go up on the event website, offering details on the gardens and profiling one of the sponsors. Tickets are available from Amber Garden Centre, Cambridge Jewellers, and online at www.cgf. nz.

OBITUARY

Ernest ‘Ernie’ Goodwin: 28.4.1929 – 3.8.2019

Ernie: the man with the heart of a Lion By Viv Posselt

Ernest ‘Ernie’ Goodwin has been remembered as a devoted family man, long-time Lions Club member and a delightful character given to tricks and dressing up. His grandchildren remember the kindest, sometimes funniest, of grandfathers. They will miss his Friday night fish and chips, his fondness for wiggling his false teeth and ears, and birthday greetings always conveyed down the phone by a singing hamster.

Cambridge Lions Club members, who shared tenure with Ernie over the 39 years he gave to the club, say he was cheerful and obliging, an electrical genius who was ‘one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet’; his late-in-life partner remembered ‘the big and little things we have done together’ through shared adventures. Ernie was recently presented with a Melvin Jones Fellow Award – the highest honour a club can bestow upon a member. Ernie died at Cambridge Oakdale

on August 3, aged 90. His farewell service saw St Andrew’s Church bursting at the seams and ended with his departure through a Lions Club guard of honour. He had joined the Lions Club of Cambridge in October 1980, taking on the presidency of the club for the 198687 year, and serving on numerous committees. Those at his farewell heard of the many times he had driven through town calling through a loudspeaker for people to come along and support the monthly Lions Trash &

Treasure markets. Ernie’s son Neville said his father was an only child whose father had died when he was four years old. The young Ernie attended Leamington School until going to Dilworth Boarding School at around age seven. He went on to do an electrical apprenticeship and married his wife Merlene in Hamilton in 1956; the couple set up home in Cambridge and went on to have three children. “He had a lifelong passion for building things … trollies and playhouses for us kids,” Neville recalled “He was a great teacher, always encouraging us even if we were rubbish.” He spoke of Ernie’s growing affinity for electronics when they came on stream – microphones set up behind bushes, and ‘moaning’ hosepipes under caravans to ‘scare the living daylights’ out of people. After Ernie’s wife died, he took to the road with his dog, always taking the left turn to see where it led. He became known as much for his wise sayings and dress-up spoofs as for his ‘slow burn grin’ and ready wit. He married again briefly, but it was with Noeline Jones that he found a new joy in life. Neville said the two went on to share many adventures, including

one that saw Ernie and Noeline kayaking down a river when Ernie was spirited 88 years old. “He was the kindest, most giving person I have known,” Neville said. “Most importantly, he gave time. He taught us that material possessions are nothing compared to adventure, fun, family and community.” Ernie is survived by his partner Noeline, three children, nine grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.

Habitat buy more pensioner homes

The sale of a 36-unit housing complex in Te Awamutu will provide revenue for the construction of more pensioner houses by Waipa District Council. Habitat for Humanity Central North Island is taking over the ownership, management and operation of the units for pensioners in Palmer Street. Habitat already operates Freeman Court, an independent living complex neighbouring the Palmer Street units. Palmer Street residents will remain in the units after the sale. Waipa District Council’s property

manager John Miles said the sale will allow for additional pensioner housing units to be built. “Pensioner housing is already in hot demand and this sale will allow us to build additional units to meet our aging population’s needs.” Habitat for Humanity CNI general manager Nic Greene said there were synergies between the Palmer Street units and neighbouring Freeman Court and potential to share resources and services. “As an accredited social landlord, Habitat has access to funding opportunities that the council

doesn’t. We look forward to working with council to support the provision of more housing in the future.” Waipa District Council’s LongTerm Plan includes plans to build more pensioner units over the next three years. It comes at a time when commercial operators are extremely active in building retirement villages and centres throughout Waipā. The district council has upgraded its pensioner housing stock in recent years, modernising the units to improve their security and insulation.

Pensioner housing units are available to people aged 65 and over in Waipā and 40 people are on the waiting list. Habitat for Humanity New

Cambridge Resthaven’s new head chef Louise Chidlow not only cooked this year’s mid-Winter banquet, she was also the secret ingredient in Resthaven’s ukulele band performance. After serving roast beef and Yorkshire puds, Louise swapped her apron for a ukulele and got straight into performing with the other players and singers, after having only one practice the day before.

Lilliputian delights from train modellers

By Viv Posselt

This weekend’s Model Railway Exhibition

in Cambridge will bring together scores of model-makers and supporters in a fun-fest for all ages.

Uniting under the banner of The Greater Waikato Railway Modellers (GWR), they come from Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Hamilton, Matamata, Tirau, and Morrinsville. This year, they will be joined by the Cambridge Patchworkers (who are making quilts for Camp Quality), the Matamata Meccano Club, and the Cambridge Brass Band. One of the event organisers, Cambridge’s Paul Murphy, said that in addition to their large club layout, the local group will have

their Christmas layout on show, along with coal mines, the popular ‘Thomas and Friends’ layout with hands-on fun for the kids. Also on view will be a model of the Raurimu Spiral, an English scene and a computerised driver training layout from Tauranga, and a Swiss Alpine scene complete with gondola chair lift from Ngongotaha. The August 17 and 18 show at the Cambridge Town Hall will be open from 10am-4.30pm on Saturday, and 10am-3pm on Sunday.

Life Unlimited Charitable Trust chief executive Mark Brown is to retire from the Hamilton-based health and disability provider after nine years in the role. Chair John Dobson acknowledged the impact Tamahere-based Mr Brown had made to Life Unlimited and to the disability sector. “He has provided real leadership and forward thinking during some challenging situations for both us and the sector in general,” he said. “His broad experience in health and social services over many years is well known and I know his management and governance skills will be highly sought after by similar organisations.” Mark Brown finishes with Life Unlimited October 31 and will pursue other interests in what he sees as the start of his “active retirement”. “He has personal projects he needs to devote time and energy to and we wish him well with that,” said Mr Dobson. He has been involved for more than 20 years in leadership roles in the health and disability sector including senior roles with the Ministry of Health as funder of services,

as well as with several provider organisations in social services and supporting people with disabilities.

Bikkie day fundraiser a sweet success By Viv Posselt

A small band of enthusiastic locals pooled their efforts to raise almost $800 for the Blind Foundation’s Guide Dogs annual fundraiser, Bikkie Day. Leading the charge was Ava Maxwell, who was featured in Cambridge News recently with paratriathlete Shannon Cleave as they marked International Albinism Day at Goodwood School, where Ava is a student. Both have albinism, a genetic condition affecting their eyesight. Ava’s mum Rachael Maxwell said her daughter had done Bikkie Day before, when she was part of the Riding for the Disabled programme. “Ava really loves dogs … she was super keen to do it again this year. I was to do all the baking and Ava and her friend, Holly Pye, were making the posters and selling the bikkies,” said Rachael, who confessed to having enlisted the aid of her local barista to help her decorate the cookies. “Well, Ava and her friends

did so well selling about 180 bikkies at Goodwood School that I was really worried we wouldn’t have enough for the sales table we had arranged to have at Countdown the next day.” With her concerns an open secret, Rachael’s friends Sacha Evans and Rachel Pridham, rushed to the rescue. “While I was at work on Friday, my mates ‘broke in’ to my house, grabbed all my ingredients, the cookie cutter and recipe, and baked all day. When I finished work, I had about 150 more cookies ready and waiting. It was a fantastic effort. I hadn’t asked them to help and they’re not even bakers. I was super impressed – so a special thanks to them for saving the day!” In total, the team made and sold over 300 boneshaped bikkies over the two days, as well as a number of dog treats they had also made. “We’re very grateful for the support we had from the community,” Rachael said. “There were people who just gave us a cash donation, and others who came to have a

Battle on again tomorrow By Sophie Iremonger

Cambridge’s 2019 champions of rugby and netball will be determined tomorrow with the Battle of the Bridge sports tournament. Played between the Hautapu and Leamington clubs, the event sees rugby and netball players over 30 years of age go head to head. Resurrected in 2013 after going defunct in the 1990s, the annual event is a steadfast tradition for Cambridge sports fans. “It’s rivalry with a bit of tongue and cheek,” explained Dave Peters from the

Leamington Rugby Club, which is hosting this year’s event. “It’s a nice, friendly relaxed atmosphere after the game, and a fun, aggressive competitive atmosphere during the game. “There’s a bit of a competitive angle to it, but there’s also a mateship angle to it, it’s so unique. You wouldn’t get that in Auckland or Hamilton or anywhere else,” said Mark Nogaj, a Hautapu club member and one of the organisers of the 2013 come-back. “Both teams have guys in their 50s playing so it’s going to be really good.

Unbeaten CHS in campus final

An excellent 28-5 win over a game Te Awamutu has earned Cambridge High a berth in the Waikato Secondary Schools Premier 1st XV competition against Matamata. CHS Rob May Builders will host the division one final tomorrow as an 11am curtain raiser to the CambridgePiako Peace Cup clash at the Leamington Sports Club. Coach Karl Thornton is encouraging supporters to turn out in force for the early game. “It’s finals football and the team who wants it the most will be the team that comes out on top”.

Also at stake will be the Ian Foster Shield and the Tricolor Trophy, which CHS has held all season. Matamata, as side acknowledged for its consistency by Thornton, turned the tables after losing to Morrinsville a week earlier by winning the other semifinal last weekend 28-19. Cambridge won the pool game between the two schools 14-12. “The game was a real arm wrestle with both teams missing some opportunities to score points. In the end the difference was a conversion as both teams scored two very good

tries,” Thornton said. Their win over Te Awamutu was more comfortable at Memorial Park last weekend on the scoresheet, but it was no cake-walk. Cambridge won the pool clash 27-3 three weeks earlier but their Waipā showed real intent and played smart rugby to trail 8-5 at the break. The bigger Cambridge side came out firingin the second half to score 20 unanswered points. “We have a very young and inexperienced team this year with only five returning players from last year’s 1st XV. As the school did not have a 2nd XV last year the majority of this year’s team came from the 2018 Under 15 and the Under 65kg team,” Thornton said. His team won seven from seven to with the Church College Trophy and qualify top for the semis. The Tricolor Trophy is the Ranfurly Shield of Waikato Secondary School Rugby and has been played for amongst the top team in the Waikato since 1964. This year the team who wins the final gets to put their name on the trophy.

“I’m predicting at least 10 hamstrings will go during the game.” “It’s a bloody good day, and you’d probably get a bigger crowd here than at Waikato’s Mitre 10 Cup game,” said Cam Bourke from Hautapu. “And it’s not really just about the game itself, but the supporters too, like guys that are in their 50s and 60s and 70s who have played against each other for rival clubs can meet up and go, ‘remember back in the day…’.” “Leamington hosted the first (2013) Battle of the Bridge event and that crowd was huge, considerably larger than the rowing world cup finals, it was packed,” said Mark. “And I think this time it will be even bigger.” That 2013 rugby game finished in a draw, with the following two years resulting in a win for Hautapu, then victory for Leamington in 2016 and another draw in 2017. There was no event in 2018. Adding to the excitement is the rarity of Hautapu and Leamington coming together on the rugby field at all. The two clubs haven’t played in the same senior rugby division since 2004.

Working today for a cleaner tomorrow book today

“It’s really cool that we actually get to play each other, because usually we do our own thing,” said Cam. “We actually don’t come together except for once a year. “No doubt the pub will be empty, there will be no where else to go in town but here.” “Just come and enjoy a feed, watch a bit of sport and then have a bit of a party afterwards,” said Dave. The event kicks off at 11am with Cambridge High School playing Matamata in the final of the Waikato secondary schools premier first-fifteen competition, followed by the Leamington vs Hautapu netball game at 12pm. Then at 1pm a Cambridge team will take on Piako in the Stan Meads Cup competition, followed by the Battle of the Bridge rugby game kicking off at 2.45pm. A ladies’ tug of war competition will also be held at half time, officiated by local sporting legend Doug Mienie, with volunteers for each team sourced from the crowd. Organisers say spectators don’t have to be with either club to attend, but encourage all sports fans to come on down and cheer on the players.

Reds need some home comfort

Cambridge continue their quest tomorrow for a top three placing in football’s Northern League second division. The Reds – currently in fifth place – host Auckland’s Onehunga Mangere at John Kerkhof Park (3pm kick off) in a game that should have Cambridge as hot favourites. But in a season where the Reds have stumbled against lowly opposition and performed well against the top teams, nothing can be taken for granted. Onehunga Mangere are second bottom in the Lotto NRFL competition and fighting to avoid relegation. They or Northland FC will drop, and the latter side caused Cambridge all sorts of

problems last weekend. In fact, Cambridge only took the lead for the first time in the 88th minute of their match before winning it 2-1, much to the relief of thier supporters. Cambridge went into last Saturday’s match knowing a win would keep alive their hopes of achieving their highest Northern League ranking in 17 seasons. The sides played out an even first half in which most of the play was restricted to the middle third. Northland produced the best chance of the half, forcing Cambridge ‘keeper Patrick Steele to pull off a spectacular double save as he blocked one shot and then fended away

Northland goalkeeper Shane Stanners (obscured) punches clear of Reds’ Patrick Woodlock (left) and Daniel Clarkin in a goalmouth tussle. Picture: Louis Roberts.

the follow-up strike. After turning around with the game scoreless, Northland took the initiative by forcing a string of corners. From one of these, in the 64th minute, keeper Steele could not take the cross cleanly and the ball strayed over the line for an own goal. Northland continued to defend with passion while Cambridge started to patiently build attacks, having replaced the spine of the side with the substitution of Jack Portegys (ankle injury) and holding midfielder Harry Wicks. The home side clawed their way back into the game when a corner was half-cleared by Northland, only for substitute Marcelo Sosa to chip the ball back into the box for Daniel Clarkin to head home in the 74th minute. From there, the balance of the Cambridge skipper Nathan Claridge bustles through the middle game shifted clearly in the Reds’ of the park. Sport Waikato Sports Awards nominations have opened. Each Waikato district will have its own awards event and category winners go forward to be considered for the Brian Perry Waikato Regional Sports Awards next January. Sport Waikato Chief Executive Matthew Cooper said taking the time to nominate sportspeople and supporters can have a big impact on how valued they feel in their community. “So many of our sportspeople and emerging athletes put a huge amount of effort and dedication into their sport, and taking the time to recognise their efforts and achievements can mean so much to them. There’s also the amazing administrators, coaches,

officials and volunteers who help to make these achievements possible – and we’d really like to see as many of these fantastic supporters nominated and recognised at their local event”, said Cooper. Cooper urges clubs, schools and sports organisations to take the time to fill in a nomination form so that the achievements can be celebrated. “We’ve worked really hard to make it as easy as possible to nominate online. The forms can be saved and returned to, so you don’t have to do it all at once. You’ve got time to get all the information you need and return to submit the nomination,” said Cooper. Helena Baby faces sternest test

Progressive galloper Helena Baby faces his toughest assignment to date when he tackles a star-studded field in the Gr.2 U S Navy Flag Foxbridge Plate (1200m) at Te Rapa on Saturday. But trainer John Bell has full confidence in his lightly-tried five-yearold as he attempts to go one better than stablemate Julius, who was beaten a nose last year by reigning Horse of the Year Melody Belle. Spring might not yet have sprung, but a host of Group One stars will assemble at Te Rapa on Saturday, with Melody Belle and boom stablemate Te Akau Shark amongst the nominations. A traditional launching pad to Spring riches, the Foxbridge Plate also heralds the return of Group One winners Consensus, Santa Monica, Authentic Paddy and Sentimental Miss, while the Tony Pike-trained Group Two winner Endless Drama is fresh-up following his last start third in the Gr.1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in Brisbane. Despite the step-up in class, Bell is pleased with Helena Baby, who routed his rivals in the Listed Opunake Cup (1400m) last month, and believes he can make that quantum leap. “He had a freshen-up since his win at Taranaki and the little bit of fastwork he has had has been on the course proper and the sectionals have been very satisfying,” he said. “He has got fresh legs and I have no issues with him coming back to 1200m. “We are going to ride our own race and not worry about Melody Belle and Te Akau Shark or any of the other top horses. “He steps up to weight-for-age but we are very comfortable with where we are at and I am looking forward to it.” Helena Baby has won his past five races and has stepped through the

grades to be rated 88, ten points inferior to his ultra-talented but injury-plagued stablemate Julius when he contested the race last year. “They are different types of horses but they have the same strength, determination and class,” Bell said. “This horse has carried lower weights and come through the grades.” Owned in Hong Kong, there is a chance that New Zealand racing fans will only see Helena Baby on two more occasions, with the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) on August 31 also on the radar. “At this stage, there is a possibility of him going into quarantine on September 3 to head up to Hong Kong,” Bell said. Helena Baby will once again be ridden by South African Donavan Mansour, who has created a good impression in his second stint in New Zealand after relocating with his wife

and two sons last season. “I identified his professionalism and ability when he first came over,” Bell said. “He is dedicated and is a great family man, which is important to me. He is polite and does his homework and I supported him heavily earlier on and now he is doing so well it is sometimes hard to get hold of him, which is a great thing. “I think there are a lot of young riders who could take a leaf out of Donavan’s book.” Bell is also pleased to have quality sprinter Julius back in the stable as he continues on the comeback trail following a tendon injury. “He came in two weeks ago and is on the walker until the end of the month. From the beginning of September, he will go to the track. It will be small steps from there.”

Helena Baby won the Opunake Cup in New Plymouth on July 20.

Some friendships transcend lifetimes. Buddy is a good dog. After searching for his purpose through several eventful lives, Buddy is sure that he has found and fulfilled it. Yet as he watches curious baby Clarity get into dangerous mischief, he is certain that this little girl is very much in need of a dog of her own. When Buddy is reborn, he realizes that he has a new destiny. He's overjoyed when he is adopted by Clarity, now a vibrant but troubled teenager. When they are suddenly separated, Buddy despairs; who will take care of his girl? A charming and heart-warming story of hope, love, and unending devotion, it asks the question, do we really take care of our pets, or do they take care of us? More than just another endearing dog tale, it is the moving story of unwavering loyalty and a love that crosses all barriers.

Directed by Tearepa Kahi (Poi E: The Story of Our Song), HERBS: Songs of Freedom brings together the band's key living members in an emotional round of interviews, jams and memories culminating in a reunion concert. 40 years on from the formation of the band in the heat of the 1970s Dawn Raids and the Bastion Point occupation, the film documents the band in the context of music as social activism. It explores the success of Herbs, the much-loved pioneers of Pacific Reggae, with interviews with band members past and present, as well as exclusive full-length concert footage from the reunion show. The band were creators of uniquely Kiwi protest songs 'French Letter', the classic 'Sensitive to a Smile' and garage-party good-times anthem 'Long Ago'. They represented a new voice - they brought fresh narratives and choruses to the front line of New Zealand.
