Piarere petition launched By Sophie Iremonger
A petition to extend the Waikato Expressway to Piarere is gathering momentum. National’s Taupo electorate MP Louise Upston launched the petition at Cambridge Lions Trash ‘n’ Treasure market and within two hours had gained over 200 signatures. “I knew people would be interested, but wow, there were even people standing waiting to sign it, so that’s really good.” The previous National government spent $4.8M planning to extend the Waikato Expressway to State Highway 29. NZTA had mapped out a new road and bought over a dozen properties in the WhitehallKarapiro area for the project. But the Labour led government dropped the project from its long-term plans. Cambridge businesses have signed up to house the petition in their shops, and plans are in the works for a public forum to discuss the issue further, possibly with Waikato MP Tim van de Molen. Like Van de Molen, who invited the transport minister Phil Twyford to visit the controversial stretch of SH1 after his meeting with Karapiro residents last month, Upston wrote to the minister and the associate minister of transport months ago, inviting them to visit the area. “They both said it’s not a priority, which I think is incredibly disrespectful,” said Upston. She expected the petition would at the least show the government the level of concern amongst road users. The extended expressway would have met with State Highway 29 with a roundabout near the Piarere hall. “That’s where the traffic splits in half, those that are going to Tauranga and those that are going south on State Highway 1, that’s the logical point. “There is not much good having a road that stops at Cambridge when the traffic divides at Piarere.” The current SH1/SH29 T-intersection at Piarere is deadly, Upston said, and the new road would avoid several other treacherous intersections on the existing road. Sign up: MP Louise Upston is pushing for the Waikato Expressway to be extended south.

We will remember him… Sixty years ago, on November 19 Lieutenant Tom Couzens (pictured right) joined the company of those who lost their lives in furthering the exploration of Antarctica. About 11am a Sno-Cat with two other New Zealanders plunged into a 30m crevasse which was concealed by snow. Tom was killed instantly and the other two very seriously injured. They were found by a United States aircraft 18 hours later and taken to Christchurch. There, Tom was given a full military funeral. The Army lost an outstanding officer and they named one of their firing ranges at Waiouru the Couzens Antitank Range. The DSIR named Couzens Bay, Antarctica, in his honour. Today, with the everdiminishing number of Korean war veterans who served with Tom in that conflict 67 years ago, remember him with pride and affection for what he was to us all – our esteemed friend, a fellow soldier and brother officer. We do remember him – rest in peace Tom. David Mannering Former Captain, 16 NZFD Reg, Korea 1952-54. Community Policing covers a wide range of activity. Last week, I headed south to Arohena where I spoke at a Rural Crime Prevention roadshow put on by FMG, in association with NZ Police and Federated Farmers. There was a great turnout, local farmers as well as those from rural Waipā. It was a night that taught me that calling electric fence reels, ‘hot tape reels’ was foreign to these parts (Oops! Put an ID mark on those electric fence reels folks!). More importantly, it demonstrated the strong sense of community in our rural areas. I’ve also had some good conversations while on my foot patrols in Cambridge. One was around the problems associated with the theft of donated items left outside the Hospice shop on Anzac Street out of hours. The shop very much appreciate and rely on

Expressway revealed
The mysteries of the Waikato Expressway’s Hamilton section were revealed on Saturday as project staff showed residents areas which were usually inaccessible to the public. About 2000 people took part in bus tours over the four-hour open day, showcasing the 22km four-lane expressway. Due to be completed in late 2021, the 22km stretch will take State Highway 1 east of Hamilton, avoiding the city and joining the Cambridge section just south of Tamahere, completed in 2015. Having originally been planned to be completed a year earlier, at the end of 2020, the main focus of the Hamilton section public day, said Waikato portfolio manager Darryl Coalter, was to show the public what’s been achieved so far. “As these expressway projects get well into construction there is less emphasis on showing people
About 200 people attended the Hamilton Expressway open day.
what we are planning and where it is going, and more on showing them progress,” Coalter said. Buses left the Hamilton section site office on Ryburn Road, off
Ruakura Road, and headed south to provide a view of the extensive, multimillion dollar construction works, including bridges, wetland developments
and general construction works. Project staff attended each bus trip to provide a commentary and answer questions. Meanwhile senior managers and engineers fielded questions from the public at the on-site visitor centre which provided birds-eye-view videos, scale models, large floor maps and an archaeological display. The $637 million Hamilton section is the final piece in the 102km four-lane Waikato Expressway, which starts at the Bombay hills south of Auckland, and stretches south, avoiding the congestion of Huntly, Ngaruawahia, Hamilton and Cambridge, before it finishes 2km south east of Cambridge. MP Louise Upston has launched a petition to garner public support to extend the expressway further south to the SH29 Tauranga turn off at Piarere.
Vaping: Govt told to step up By Sophie Iremonger
As the New Zealand government prepares to introduce a bill on vaping regulation – limiting vape product flavours to tobacco, menthol and mint – Cambridge principals are calling for stricter regulations on the modern ‘smoking’ trend, which already has two per cent of young people vaping daily. At St Peter’s School, an estimated 70 percent of students had been exposed to vaping or had tried it, and 10 per cent of those had become addicted. The approach for most students has been stopping them at the ‘top of the cliff’ – educating them on the dangers of vaping before they started, but the school is also providing a “therapeutic model” for those who have become addicted to nicotine. “It’s part of a wider wellbeing curriculum (health class) that we teach,” said principal Dale Burden. “All schools have students who vape … however there will be a small percentage everywhere of students that have got real issues with it, so how we deal with that is by using a strength-based therapeutic model, a step-by-step method or plan to help the student stop vaping.” Cambridge High School has been providing a similar service – helping students addicted to nicotine to quit by using supportive products and information, and educating students and parents on the dangers of vaping.
“Our school has experienced the vaping trend going around New Zealand,” said Cambridge High School deputy principal John McDonnell. “We’ve chosen the education side rather than the punitive side, through the nurse helping students and providing information, and that’s showing a result.” He confirmed the number of students addicted to vaping had reduced since Term 2 this year, when the vaping trend for young people around the country seemed to peak. “I think the industry trick youth into thinking it’s okay, there’s no harm, but it’s actually quite addictive, it does have nicotine.” Some forms of vaping liquid contain 60mg of nicotine. A single cigarette contains 10-to20 mg of nicotine. “It’s worse than smoking, and it seems to be down to easy access, it’s very assessible,” said McDonnell. “Vaping used to be that it helps people stop smoking, but now students who have never smoked are vaping.” Burden said he hoped the government would introduce stricter regulations to vaping advertising – following the footsteps of Australia and the United States. “With the way they (vaping companies) are pitching it and advertising, the government need to start moving a bit more quickly than what they are. It’s big tobacco getting in the back door again, they’re glamourising vape smoking in the same way the Marlboro man
and the likes did 40 years ago. “It’s like when I was a kid, they would sell those lollies in the shape of a cigarette with a red thing at the end, and you used to walk around imitating the adults.”
Vaping has become a far-too-common trend amongst young people, school staffers say.

Last gasp Garden Festival tickets
Latecomers not wanting to miss Sunday’s 2019 Rotary Cambridge Garden Festival still have an opportunity to purchase tickets. Tickets will be available at Cambridge Jewellers until they close on Saturday, and at Amber Garden Centre and Cambridge i-SITE right up to the event itself on Sunday. They can also be purchased online at www.cgf.nz, with pickup from Cambridge i-SITE. The festival, now into its second year, is Rotary Cambridge’s prime fundraiser; it raised $30,000 for charity in 2018. Project leader and Rotarian Carey Church said she was pleased with ticket sales this year, but that she hopes to top last year’s takings this time around. A total of 1350 tickets went on sale several months ago, with each ticket including a map showing people how to get to the 11 gardens included, and what to expect once they arrive. The 2019 festival gardens include two that were featured last year, seven new gardens and two new ‘Art in the Garden’ sites which will showcase the work of Carole Hughes and Dot and Barry Harding. There will be more to buy on the day than in 2018 - including artwork, refreshments and picnic lunches to take around the gardens with you.
‘Critical’ new pool work announced Waipa District Council says asset sales will cover the cost of critical remedial works on the 50m outdoor pool in Cambridge. An additional $521,000 has been approved to repair defects in the existing pool which were discovered by contractors. The facility is undergoing major redevelopment and the 50m pool will be retained as part of the new complex. Project delivery manager Lorraine Kendrick said the additional costs would not have an impact on rates. “The funds will be covered through asset sales in Cambridge plus external funding. It’s simply an unavoidable cost to ensure an old pool can continue to be used and enjoyed for years to come.” Kendrick said the original pool was constructed in 1971, making it 48 years old and near the end of its 50-year asset life. “We had anticipated some remedial work would be required due to the age of the pool. However, until the pool was closed and emptied and the adjacent ground excavated for the new building, we were unable to carry out inspections and we couldn’t be sure of the extent of work required.” In October 2018 Council entered into a $17.6 million fixed-price contract to build the long-awaited pool complex with a total project budget of $20.7 million.

Teens target new pump track
By Steph Bell-Jenkins
A group of teenagers got a little too pumped about the new pump track currently being built in Cambridge last weekend. Jude Eades, the driving force behind the $600,000 facility, said teens had broken through a fence at the Dominion Ave construction site last weekend and damaged some of the new asphalt surfaces with their scooters. “The track is not ideal for scooters; they travel really low to the ground and when they go over a bump they bottom out, so these kids have scuffed the tops of the new jumps,” she said. She said the teens, who were spotted on Sunday, left “a whole lot of rubbish at the site” and someone had thrown an egg onto the track. After pouring more than 18 months of effort into getting the track built to provide a healthy outlet for teenage energy, Eades is irritated by the thoughtless behaviour. “I just feel frustrated because this is 100 per cent a community track,” she said. “The community fundraised and the local businesses donated to it – can these kids not have some respect? We’re doing this for them.” She said the track was due to open before Christmas, but further damage could put that in
jeopardy. However, aside from last weekend’s incidents, construction was progressing well. Pump tracks combine rolling jumps and turns found on traditional BMX style tracks with the flow of mountain bike trails and the rhythm of skate parks and Eades said Cambridge’s would be the “biggest and best in New Zealand”. The 2500m² facility, designed for use by bicycles and skateboards, will cater to everyone from toddlers on balance bikes to Olympic athletes. Eades is looking for volunteers to help with duties such as barrowing asphalt, raking topsoil and watering newly planted grass at the site from now until about December 7. “Whether you can donate an hour of your time or a whole week, any help would be appreciated,” she said. “It would be a great opportunity for kids who have finished high school and love biking to get involved and work with the Velosolutions crew.” Velosolutions is a Swiss company owned by former competitive mountain biker Claudio Caluori, who designed the Cambridge pump park. Mike Pettit and Philip Coles are looking forward to seeing this fir become Cambridge’s community Christmas tree.
Just right for Christmas By Sophie Iremonger
It was originally intended to be an artificial tree in front of the town hall – but a free, existing fir tree nearby, at the right shape and size, proved to be the perfect – and enduring – choice. The fir will become the Cambridge community Christmas tree in Victoria Square and will be lit up next Friday. When the Cambridge Community Board began work on the project six months ago it was intended to have an artificial tree – but then the better option just across the road was identified as one which could be used every year. “We welcome the community to come down and see the lights switch on,” said Philip Coles, a former Cambridge Community Board member and organiser with Mike Pettit, Julie Epps and Roger Gordon.
It’s been a community collaboration of sorts, with John Davidson’s Year 10 woodwork class at Cambridge High School crafting a giant silver star for the tree, with paint provided by Resene Cambridge, and the Cambridge Cricket Club providing picket fencing to go around the base of the tree. Funding has come from Cambridge Lions and the community board. The lights will be installed by Cambridge electricians Steen and Morrow and Waipa Networks will provide the equipment to get the star placed on top and secured in place. The star will light up each night, along with the Christmas lights. Coles and former board chair Mike Pettit – who are now Cambridge ward members of the Waipā District Council - hope to make the community Christmas tree an annual event.
The Cambridge Library will close for two weeks next month while structural repairs are made to the building. From Friday December 6 to Thursday 19 December the library will be shut while contractors carry out remedial work on the floor. Waipa District Council community services manager Sally Sheedy said minor soil movement beneath the building had put pressure on the floor, compromising its structure. “A section of the building foundation sits on top of compacted fill. There has been minimal movement in this fill but enough to put pressure on the floor. The remedial work will repair and strengthen the floor to ensure the building can continue to be used for years to come. There are no safety concerns for those currently using the building.” The library will be closed from December 6-19 and Sheedy said it would be open late in the days leading up to the closure, to provide library users time to borrow items. For more details, go to waipalibraries.org.nz .
Chamber sponsor
Waipā Networks has been named as the keystone sponsor of the Cambridge Business Chamber. Waipa Networks chief executive Adam Fletcher said the company was a longstanding supporter of the Cambridge business community, both as a sponsor of the Chamber of Commerce and principal sponsor of the Waipa Networks Business Awards “Becoming Keystone Sponsor of the Cambridge Chamber is an exciting new chapter and allows us to develop the relationship even further.” Chamber chef executive Kelly Bouzaid said with growth comes challenges and opportunity, “and Waipa Networks know this better than anyone.”

Seymour tackles public fears Euthanasia bill
By Viv Posselt
Act NZ leader David Seymour says one in three people living overseas who succeed in getting permission to end their lives elect not to do so. He was responding to questions on his End of Life Choice Bill during a Sunday Newstalk ZB Q&A session hosted by Tim Beveridge. Seymour said even the best palliative care in the world could not help in some cases, and many of those given permission to die chose not to do so - but
felt ‘empowered’ by having that option open to them. Asked about the potential for future governments to change the bill, Seymour said it would have to go back to Parliament for further debate and then be required to meet a majority. Those seeking to end their lives had to go through two doctors – one could be the patient’s own doctor, and the other was a medical practitioner selected from a list of doctors willing to perform assisted dying. Seymour said the bill did
not give the State the power of life and death over anyone. The law would apply strictly to those who were terminally ill and likely to live for six months or less, and doctors would be legally bound to put a ‘stop notice’ in cases where they suspected individuals were being coerced. “The individual seeking assisted dying has to apply in person in real time, through a face-to-face with medical practitioners … that person can also stop the process at any time.” He also said life

insurance policies would be unaffected. “They will pay out as though that individual had died of the illness naturally.”
What it means, how our MPs voted By Viv Posselt
The November 13 parliamentary vote ended two years of tough political talk around Act NZ leader David Seymour’s End of Life Choice Bill. The bill, which opens the door to terminally ill adults requesting assisted dying, passed 69-51 in a conscience vote. It now goes to a public referendum to be held at next year’s general election – that will decide on whether the bill becomes law. The controversial bill has been through eight parliamentary debates and has generated a record 39,000 public submissions – all of which led Seymour to make changes in key areas of concern. Speaking to
Parliament on November 13, he said the bill had enough safeguards against coercion, which has and continues to be a contentious point for many, along with fears around eligibility criteria, and on undue pressure being brought to bear on medical practitioners. Present in the public gallery for the vote was Shirley Seales, mother of Wellington lawyer Lecretia Seales whose failed attempt to be granted the authority to end her life inspired Seymour’s efforts. Shirley Seales expressed satisfaction with the vote, as did Lecretia Seales’ widower Matt Vickers. This is how things stand now: • The option of assisted dying is open only to those aged 18 and over, those who have been
diagnosed as terminally ill with less than six months to live or suffer from a ‘serious grievous and irremediable medical condition’; those in an advanced state of irreversible decline in capability; those experiencing ‘unbearable suffering’ for which they cannot find relief; and those with the ability to understand the nature and consequences of assisted dying. • Doctors and nurses are banned by law to initiate a conversation about euthanasia with a patient – the request must come directly from the individual seeking assisted dying. • Medical practitioners are not obligated to take a role in a Continued page 9
Last week’s passage into law, pending a referendum, of Act leader David Seymour’s End of Life Choice Bill has drawn mixed public response. Cambridge-based Euthanasia-Free NZ executive officer Reneé Joubert said it lacked important safeguards and saw the 69-51 vote through Parliament as “highly concerning”. She said the bill’s final reading would not have passed without New Zealand First’s bloc vote in favour. “…unlike laws in Victoria, Canada and Oregon, this bill does not require independent witnesses to be involved in any part of the assisted death process. It does not require a cooling period … the list goes on. “Parliament rejected proposed amendments to include such safeguards without even debating them. Maggie Barry proposed the inclusion of a cooling period of one week; Simeon Brown proposed that an independent witness should be present at a person’s death. How many wrongful deaths, resulting from a lack of meaningful safeguards, are Parliament willing to accept?”

Loopholes in the bill could enable coercion and abuse, she said, and could allow people as young as 18 to request a lethal dose to end their life. Joubert said responses from a poll conducted between October 31 and November 6 suggested New Zealanders were confused about what the bill seeks to legalise. She said three quarters of respondents thought the bill would legalise people choosing to have machines keeping them alive turned off, where that choice is already legal. “We doubt that another year would be long enough to allow the public to become adequately informed about the bill’s content, amid contentious debates on cannabis and the general election,” she said. “We are concerned that a referendum result may not reflect the public’s true sentiments.

Kids Eco Festival brimful with ideas The inaugural Kids Eco Festival held last weekend at Cambridge Primary School was hailed by organisers as a great success. Accessible sustainability was central to the event, with stands focusing on waste reduction, pest control, clean water, making reusable bags, whipping up smoothies using pedal power, and more. The festival was officially opened with a karakia by Ngāti Hauā kaumatua Tu Clarke. A stand selling native plants highlighted the work being done by Morrinsville’s Ngāti Hauā Mahi Trust in growing native plants and doing wetland restoration and riparian planting in culturally significant catchment areas, including at Karapiro. The Trust recently took out the Te Puni Kokiri Māori Award in the 2019 New Zealand Biosecurity Awards. A ‘wearable arts’ segment featured fashion made from waste and intended for recycling. The winner in the 5-12 years category was Leah Ervine, 6, who draped herself in toilet roll holders which she intends using as seed planters. The winner in the 13-18 years category was Dakota Le’Mon

BUSINESS SHOWCASE
COLLINS & SONS The Collins & Sons Earthmoving and Cartage story began in 2013 with a bobcat, a digger, a truck and a tonne of drive. The family-owned Cambridge business has grown enormously over the past six years with Sam Collins in the role of general manager. Two years ago, his wife Vanessa joined the management team and together they have continued to grow the business. The company now boasts an impressive fleet of vehicles and equipment.
Grit and determination, along with the ability to meet customers' needs, ensures the business remains on the fast track of growth. The recent and substantial addition of new machinery has now taken the company to the next level.“The new machines allow us to work a lot quicker and with a lot more accuracy,” says Sam. The speed with which Collins & Sons has grown is testament to its original goal of developing a loyal customer base. Longterm contracts have been fostered on the strength of the company's service delivery, customer focus and quality of staff. As a family owned and run business, community involvement has always been important. The now well-established business has worked to integrate itself into the fabric of the town and surrounding area. Collins & Sons is not only a highly respected and loyal company to do business with, it is also an involved contributor to local community and sport groups. A lot of people will remember the ‘sports balls in local schools’ project that the company initiated as well as the monthly draw to provide sporting and other equipment to the town and outlying country schools. Most will have seen the sponsorship around Cambridge’s different sports teams. From netball to rugby, right through to smallbore rifle shooting, the Collins and Sons name can be seen supporting locals. Locals themselves, Sam and Vanessa stress their love of living in Cambridge. “Our kids attend local schools and we will support locals first.” Earthmoving and cartage The team of Collins & Sons is proud to operate a modern fleet of vehicles and earthmoving machinery. With customer satisfaction a high priority, clients don't have to worry about unexpected delays or
Sam and Vanessa Collins costly downtime due to breakdowns and repairs. The earthmoving and cartage experts specialise in house pads, drainage, entrance and driveways, concrete preparations, re-contouring sections, re-laying top soil, carting, tipping and spreading, demolition, tree clearing and subdivision preparation. The company is able to accommodate any scale of work, including tight or hard to access spaces. Using the latest bit of new kit, a state-of-the-art laser grader, ensures the job gets done right the first time. Quality and reliability Collins & Sons consistently aims to deliver clients, contractors and suppliers of materials an on-time reliable service supported by technology-driven infrastructure for quoting, dispatching, tracking and recording jobs. From quote to completion, it's all about quality and customer focus, backed up by the experience that Sam brings to the industry as a qualified builder. Staff are well-trained, professional, efficient and committed. They have the competency to operate advanced machines and take pride in keeping the fleet of vehicles in excellent condition. The plant is modern and well-maintained by our own qualified engineer. Of course, staff welfare is paramount and health
and safety is a major focus of all day to day operations. All operators are fully Site Safe certified with upgrade and refresher courses part of their ongoing training programme. Collins & Sons is a company member of Site Safe NZ, which means customers can rest assured with Collins & Sons they're in safe hands. Aggregate and landscaping Collins and Sons' fleet of late model units have the technology on board to give customers accurate ETAs on deliveries. This is especially valuable to companies who have a multiple drop of zones that require units to be met by the end client to show exact drop of areas. Helpful, trustworthy

drivers ensure customers don't have to waste time standing around waiting for trucks. Reliable drivers and machinery are essential in the cartage business and delivering sand, aggregates and landscaping supplies in a timely manner is always a focus, even at short notice. The business caters to the rural, industrial, building and private sectors. The good name of Collins & Sons, which Sam and Vanessa constantly strive to maintain, helps to create that much sought after business commodity - repeat business. It has made the company the preferred choice of many when it comes to earthmoving and cartage.

OBITUARY – REG RYE: 25.6.1922 - 9.11.2019
Farewelling Reg Rye, a top man on and off the bike By Viv Posselt
Reg Rye swelled Cambridge’s collective heart with pride when he knocked off a few world cycling records over the past couple of years. He still held one of them when he died on November 9. As he slipped away to join his late wife Joy, Reg remained the proud holder of the UCI World Cycling Hour record for his age group. He was a late 96 when he completed 20.886 km in an hour’s spirited riding over 83 laps at the Avantidrome on April 27. Under the glare of cameras and a television crew, he claimed then “I’m buggered”, before expressing disappointment that the bottle of fluid passed to him was just water. That interaction alone spoke volumes of Reg’s character. The many who attended his farewell at Te Awa Lifecare last week heard about his adventurous and competitive spirit, his enjoyment of racehorses, sport and travel, his sweet tooth and his sociability. Reg was a man, they said, who was zealously passionate about life and family, who hated giving up on anything and who became a ready friend to all who knew him. Cracking that world record in April was a huge deal. He had planned to do it a

woodworking; he became well known for the wooden toys he made and sold to raise money for Resthaven and later St John. His connection with the latter was noted in 2002 when he was awarded a Priory vote of thanks by the organisation “for valuable assistance rendered in furthering the work of the Order of St John in New Zealand”. Sport always played a large part in his life. He played rugby during the war years, but preferred track and field, becoming a founding and life member of the Cambridge Athletics and Harriers Club. He revisited an earlier interest in cycling to fill a void after losing his wife. Travel and adventure took over. Reg flew with the Waikato Aero Club, went gliding and jet boat riding, travelled the South Island and celebrated his 92nd birthday by doing a tandem skydive in Taupo. Michael van Enter spoke about Reg’s determination, his amusing quips. “After I became his coach, he’d go off training in the gym saying, ‘Oh, I’d better go training with the oldies’.” “He was always a bit of a joker with us, but a man with wisdom too. His answer to everything was ‘I know’.”

Funding allows events to flourish The Cambridge Autumn Festival is one of nearly a dozen Waipa initiatives that will continue to provide free or reduced-cost events to the public thanks to funding from the Creative Communities Scheme. “The support we receive means we can provide events for the community that otherwise wouldn’t happen,” said Julie Epps, a trustee on the Cambridge Autumn Festival Trust. The festival, from March 26 to April 5, is an annual 10-day autumn celebration of performing and visual arts and received the biggest individual sum, $6880. “Our funders help us to keep the festival events accessible to the community, with over a third of the programme free to attend, and other events at affordable ticket prices,” added Alana MacKay, another Autumn Festival trustee. “We aim to provide multiple opportunities for a large cross section of people to engage with and participate in the arts.” The Cambridge Scottish Country Dancers and Cambridge Society of Arts have benefitted from the funding too, receiving $4200 and $900 respectively. “We like to keep the cost of both the workshops and membership low to keep dancing accessible to a range of people,” said dance instructor Antanas Procuta. “Without the Creative Communities Fund, it would be difficult to provide affordable classes to the broad range of potential dancers in our community. And it is very cool to have people coming out in the evenings to dance, socialise and exercise instead of clinging to their devices.” Cambridge Society of Arts treasurer Ineke Zegwaard said the grant was the reason why their annual exhibition, held in conjunction with the Cambridge Camera Club, could be free of

charge. “As local clubs we really appreciate the contribution the grant makes towards the cost of having an exhibition.” The funding would also cover the Society of Arts’ annual Open Studio Art Tour. CAMFEST has also received a boost in the latest funding round, $1000 in total, which will support the Cambridge-based event. The name stands for the Cambridge Acoustic Music Festival, which will feature local artists and provide opportunities to engage and participate in activities together. The Creative Communities Scheme is a partnership between Creative New Zealand and Waipa District Council to support community arts projects that promote and foster creativity, focussing on at least one of the scheme’s three criteria: access and participation, diversity or young people. It can cover materials for arts activities, workshops, venue or equipment hire, promotion of arts activities and more. Grants usually range between $200 and $2000.
The Autumn Festival will offer a range of free events next year thanks in part to funding from the Creative Communities Scheme, as will the Cambridge Scottish Country Dancing group – pictured here during this year’s Festival.
Let’s face it, the evidence is incontrovertible: All but the most staunch deniers and the doggedly ignorant agree that we are on the brink of a global climate crisis. But there are pockets of good news and optimism to be found. Do a quick net search for “Monbiot trees” and you’ll get a page full of links about how tree planting and ‘rewilding’ really can make a difference. And if you haven’t seen the video made by George Monbiot and Greta Thunberg - you should watch it. In 2017, 1.5 million volunteers planted 66 million trees in 12 hours. There is great work being done in Ethiopia, a country better known for famine and war than reforestation, where a campaign known as ‘Green Legacy’ recently saw 353 million trees planted in 12 hours. The target for ‘Green Legacy’ is 4 billion trees. A few weeks ago, during Equidays at Mystery Creek, in the recycling area known as Wombleton, a team of volunteers sorted rubbish from the event into compostable, recycling, and land fill. As a result of their efforts, 80% of the rubbish which would otherwise have gone into landfill was diverted to recycling and compost. These are great stories and they should be celebrated. It is said that nature can and will heal itself. Of course, I’m not trying to portray nature as sentient, or indeed imply that there is anything other than the laws of physics at work - the reality is that nature is entirely indifferent to our, or anything else’s, existence as an individual,
community, race, species, or mountain range. Nature will take its course whatever happens. The way things are, mass extinctions and the collapse of society as we know it are more likely than most would care to acknowledge, but it doesn’t have to be that way. It is within the power of the human race to make it more likely that the ecosystems of the world which have been damaged by our actions will regenerate. This is where it gets a bit tricky; we must emit less CO2 and other greenhouse gases. Whilst we all know that eating less meat and burning less fossil fuel will go a long way towards a carbon neutral future, we also know that this is not going to happen overnight. What we can do, right now, is plant trees - it’s really that simple. Whether people plant trees themselves, or support the efforts of others who do, it is a good idea. A tree is a cheap, self-building, durable, environment enhancing, aesthetically pleasing, atmospheric CO2 extraction machine. New Zealand emits nearly 14 million tonnes of CO2 per year - but the good news is that all the trees in New Zealand together extract nearly six million tonnes per year of CO2 from the atmosphere, leaving NZ with net emissions of around eight million tonnes. I don’t know about you but I find those statistics very encouraging. More trees less CO2, and perhaps nature will have a chance to fix things.

Free run New CAB chairman loads of fun seeks to extend services By Steph Bell-Jenkins
By Viv Posselt
I didn’t know what a “parkrun” was until recently, when my husband heard about it from a workmate. Now, having done my first Cambridge parkrun and loved it, I wanted to spread the word about this brilliant grassroots event. Parkrun is a collection of timed 5km runs that take place every Saturday morning at over 1400 locations in 22 countries. They are run by volunteers and are free to enter. In Cambridge we have a parkrun that starts and finishes near the Avantidrome car park, with participants running 2.5km along the Te Awa pathway towards the Gaslight Theatre before doubling back home. It is held every Saturday at 8am and is open to everyone from four-year-olds to Olympic athletes. The cool thing is it’s not a race, so all the competitive pressure is stripped out. You run at your own pace, purely for fitness and enjoyment, just you against the clock. To register you just enter your details on the Cambridge parkrun webpage and print out a barcode to bring to the run. When my 10-year-old son Flynn and I went along recently there were 55 others at the start line spanning a wide range of ages and abilities, from children and a dad pushing his baby in a buggy to very fit looking runners. The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming and the run was a perfect way to spend quality time with my son while getting fresh air and exercise in a beautiful setting. Flynn was really into it and I loved how many of the other runners encouraged him along the way. We came home buzzing and are both keen to do it again. Thanks so much to the volunteers who run this great community event. To find out more or register, visit www.parkrun.co.nz/cambridgenz.
Three months into his role as chairman of the Cambridge Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), Keith Urwin is extending a request to readers. First, he would like more volunteers, people able to offer around two and a half hours each week. He is also looking for residents with the sort of skills that could boost the bureau’s parcel of resources, people who would be willing to go onto a database and receive a call for advice as and when required. Like all New Zealand’s 82 bureaux, the team already uses a remote resource base through which to access information at the touch of a button. They are also able to contact a few Cambridgebased advisors who make themselves available when needed. “That’s the area I want to extend,” Keith explained. “Other bureaux have developed their local resources better than we have here. I’d like to see us being able to tap into individuals who might have some knowledge in areas such as consumer law, health, immigration, or employment matters; and finding people of
different ethnicities willing to help with translations would be extremely helpful. “Some bureaux run employment issue clinics and have separate advocacy services. We don’t do that here. We do have a JP [Justice of the Peace] clinic twice a week through which we handle something like 1550 enquiries a year; we can get 30 people through in a twohour period for those. But we know the need for advice across the board is increasing as Cambridge grows, and we need to keep up with that.” Keith retired several years ago after a long career as a commercial insurance broker. He and his wife Isobel have done charity work for years, and it was when the couple moved from Bruntwood Rd into town seven years ago that Keith started looking for something to get his teeth into. He takes a water aerobics class at the St Peter’s School pool every week, and it was during one of those sessions that he heard the Cambridge CAB was looking for volunteers. He joined the organisation five years ago, volunteering initially, then as a Board member, and since midAugust, as chairman. “It is one of those jobs
Cambridge Citizens Advice Bureau chairman Keith Urwin is seeking help as the need for services grows.
where you could probably just chair the meetings and make sure things tick over, but I want to do something to push it ahead, particularly during this period of rapid growth in Cambridge. “Our need for additional volunteers is the more urgent requirement right now. We’ve got 35 at the moment, but really need 40 to cover off the rostered 30 duties a week. There are usually around 10
people not available at any time; we always have more than one on at a time and at present, some volunteers are having to double shift.” Keith said anyone interested in finding out more about becoming a volunteer should contact the Bureau (07-827 4855), while those willing to step up to go onto a local resource database should contact him directly on 021 962 617.
Cambridge Travel Lines School Bus Drivers Wanted Who are we?
I have been with CTL for 14 years, over this period I have seen lots happen, enjoyed all of it. The bonus is having holidays while students have got theirs’s. I can honestly say no 2 days are the same, while being a pensioner, it is nice little job to get you out and about. A lot of friendly people to work with and lots of stories shared – Maureen
Cambridge Travel Lines, the company has celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2018. 1958, the first bus run was in Cambridge, Horahora Primary, south of Karapiro. The bus was a 1951 Diamond T, Kauri framed bus with a canvas roof, how times have changed! Now many of our buses are run by computers, with climate control! The founders, Terry and Bev Pidduck, along with Reg Ridley started the company. Present day, Mike Pidduck and Ivan Julian, run the company. We have many staff members that have been with us for over three decades. Whilst the company employs over 60 drivers in the Waikato, our roots are still firmly based in Cambridge. We are still a family orientated company, and consider our staff as part of a team, where any staff member can walk into the manager’s office for a chat.
Why become a school bus driver? We have found a wide variety of the community enjoy
working part time. Retired, semi-retired, mothers whom children have gone off to school. People whom full time employment doesn’t suit, people wanting to get back into fulltime employment, and gain a qualification along the way. Work is flexible, only school terms, typically 7.30-900 am and 3.00-4.30 pm, with opportunities for extra work if wanted, as in school trips, charter work e.g. (Clubs/ organisations wanting to go on outings).
What is needed to be a bus driver? A class 2 licence and P licence, and to be able to pass a police check, but if you do have something on your record and wonder if you could still pass the Police check, do not let this put you off, please come in and talk it over with us.
You have no experience or the correct licences? That is fine, we will pay for you to get them, and all the training that is required.
Some thoughts from a couple of our drivers. Employed by CTL over 20 years, arrived in Cambridge looking for full time job, still here, still having fun, part time hours suit my lifestyle and school holidays off – Reta Been employed by CTL for nearly 8 years, when I retired my focus was that I wanted something to keep me motivated and I find CTL a great place to work, very happy and enjoy being part of a team - Peter
I have been driving buses for 42 years, 25 years with CTL, the hours are great, 1.5 hours morning and night, forty weeks a year, the rest holidays, that’s great. We have a great fleet and the maintenance is of high level. I love the open road in the countryside, especially in my new automatic bus, more traffic to content with these days. I love being with the students, my own kids travelled with me now it is grandkids, that was something our boss let us do was take our kids on board. I am now on second generation school kids. I enjoy going to work each day because I work with fine people and I am part of a great company – Patricia

Double bill at Gaslight By Sophie Iremonger
A double-show special will open at the Gaslight Theatre tomorrow. Two shows by New Zealand playwright April Phillips will feature back to back at the Alpha St theatre from November 23 to December 7 – Snip and Bonking James Bond. Director Steve McMurray of Cambridge said the two shows together made for an evening of great entertaining comedy. “They’re both good fun, just some good, light hearted entertainment,” he said, describing Snip as “a light hearted look at the situation” when a husband faces the pressures of getting a vasectomy, and Bonking James Bond as a “fantasy affair to win a husband back”. He plays the cheating husband in Bonking James Bond, with Laura Hill playing his poor,
desperate wife Betty, Peter Briston as the fantasy lover James, and Stef Gibson as the meddling mistress. Stef, along with Kate Moyna who plays wife Jenny in Snip, are newcomers to the Gaslight Stage. They’re joined by several familiar faces in the mostly-Cambridge cast, completed by Snip lead Jared Wooldridge as Frank, the man facing a vasectomy or his wife’s cold shoulder, Tony Eccles playing the imaginary support figure Don Corleone from The Godfather, and Marianne Kay as Dr Sam Smith. After several weeks of preparing, McMurray said the cast had gelled and everything had come together nicely. “It looks like it will be an entertaining evening.” Tickets are available from www.eventfinda. co.nz or Paper Plus Cambridge.

The name cedar is often used for any tree with dark, spicy-scented wood. In Japan there is the plume cedar (Cryptomeria), in North America the incense cedar (Calocedrus), Western cedar (Thuja) and Eastern cedar (Chaemocyparis). But the true cedars, distinguished by their majestic architecture, are only four in number and three of these are found around the Mediterranean. admittedly-large garden of my childhood. At Christmas we decorated it head to foot with handmade streamers, stars and bells, but by the time I arrived at adulthood it was almost out of reach, so only a few of the lower branches could be festooned with tinsel and baubles. Nowadays at 45m high its days as a Christmas tree are over. The wood of the Atlantic cedar is pale brown with well-defined growth rings. It is durable and notable for its resistance to fungi and termites, but because it tends to distort when drying and may be brittle, it is not particularly good for building. However it is easy to work and takes a fine finish, so is popular for joinery, furniture and veneer.

Rower Brooke Donoghue (pictured) was named Sportswoman the Year at 2019 onestepnz@ gmofail.com Waipa Networks District Sports Awards on 021and163 2117 Monday. Brooke rowing partner Olivia Loe repeated their 2017 world championship triumph, winning gold by almost a boat length. Luke Jacobson took out the Sportsman of the Year, having been selected for the Mitre 10 Cup, the Chiefs and the All Blacks – only to be denied a Rugby World Cup finals bow because of injury. Hautapu coach Craig Stevenson’s success in steering his side to dominate Waikato club rugby this year earned him the coach of the year award and netball umpire Ceri Hill was named official of the year. The team of the year award went to St Peter’s Cambridge Premier Girls Basketball Team. The Te Awamutu BMX Club was named
Club of the Year and the Innovation in Sport and Recreation award was won by the Cambridge Cycling Festival. The award for Secondary School Contribution to Sport went to Matthew McHugh and the Emerging Talent trophy was won by Finn Fisher-Black. Service to Sport Recipients were Mary Bear, Sandy Cassells, Shani Paterson, Colin Thorsen, Administrator of the Year was David Kite, Secondary School Sportswoman was Charlisse Leger-Walker and Secondary School Sportsman Jack Carswell. Schumacher scores Cambridge junior driver Fergus Schumacher was back in the winner’s circle at Alexandra Park after piloting home Anditover in the Schweppes Mobile Trot (1609m) for employer Ross Paynter. Last Friday’s run in Auckland was the first one back for the son of Andover Hall, who finished fifth in the Gr.1 Northern Trotting Derby (2700m) in May, and Schumacher was delighted with the victory. “It was a very nice win. Leading into it he had no trial and to produce a win first-up was quite impressive,” he said. “He will be better over 2700m because he is a dour stayer, but he got away with a mile the other night because he stuck to his guns and he tries really hard.
With the victory, Schumacher took his win tally for the season to five, one clear of his nearest rival in the northern junior driver ranks. Schumacher is hoping his form can continue as he holds ambitions of qualifying for the New Zealand Junior Driver Championships in his final season as a junior. It is the ninth season in the junior ranks for Schumacher and he said he has learnt a lot from his various employers in that time. “I have been all around the place, but it is good to pick up different ideas from each and every trainer.” “Winning for great connections like the other night is awesome. It was great to come back and see smiles on their faces.” – Cambridge Raceway

SITUATIONS VACANT www.people4success.co.nz
Administration & Office Support From accounts administration to co-ordinating social media; from oversight of on-site H&S plans to tool inventory management, this is a varied role where your flexibility, dexterity and willingness to turn your hand to do what it takes in a small business will be critical. To make this happen you’ll have strong computer skills (so much the better if you’ve worked with dropbox before)and you’ll not only be able to see what needs to be done, you’ll be able to prioritise the right things to do first. You’ll likely have had some formal office administration experience or you’ll have had other work experience that includes this type of work. Our clients have an established reputation for attention to detail, great customer service and exemplary workmanship, and this culture permeates through the business. Important to this client is that these qualities are reflected in their support team who ensure the front line team are well set up for every day and have the tools (literally) that they need to get the job done. Working Full Time five days a week, you’ll be busy and the keyboard will feel like a natural extension of your hands. The business’ suppliers will liaise with you on anything to do with the accounts and our team will see you as the person who helps them pay attention to those important and sometimes annoying parts of their job that ensure the business runs well. Get gardening
A monthly gardening column, courtesy of Amber Garden Centre
November is a busy time in the garden, as spring rolls into summer with warmer temperatures. Vegetables Time to plant pumpkin, cucumber, courgette, watermelon, pepper, chillies and tomatoes. As early crops of lettuce, radish and broccoli are harvested, plant more. Carrots, parsnips, beans and peas – sow seeds directly into the garden. Before replanting, add compost and sheep pellets to boost soil texture and nutrients for the next crop. Herbs Basil, dill and coriander are short-lived herbs which grow well now. Parsley, thyme, chives and rosemary are longer-lived. Picking regularly encourages fresh growth. Borage encourages bees and flowers from many herbs are edible decorations. Lawns Spray with Turfix to eliminate flat weeds and for Onehunga weed use prickle weed killer. Small fruit Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and passionfruit – give a side dressing of sheep pellets. Indoor Plants Spring is just as important for indoor plants. Repot into larger containers as required with new potting mix. Give a gentle cold shower out of the sun to wash any dust build up on their leaves. Perennials Delphiniums, alstroemeria, federation daisies and carnations are all great fillers in the garden to provide colour over the summer months and their flowers are great for picking, too.

Very well paced film with enough fun in the plot that you can't help but enjoy. It stays grounded in reality, with a character that you can relate to and genuinely want to see survive as she continually makes smart choices. Review: “To me this was one of the best horror experiences I ever had. Very suspenseful and fun to watch throughout. Samara (Three Billboards) Weaving is masterful in the type genre and I absolutely love how there's dark comedy in a few parts. It's very important to note this is very gory; no it's not a spoiler, just a warning for the squeamish type; for the horror fans you're in for a wonderful treat.”
KNIVES OUT When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan's dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan's untimely death. Review: “The film is so freaking entertaining. I could see it again and again. It's fun, it's thrilling, it's wacky, it has so many twists and turns that it always keeps you guessing. And for the cast, what a freaking cast. I couldn't even tell you who the most valuable player of the cast was. They were all fantastic. The film is great and I'm going to encourage every single person to go out and see it pronto when it releases.”
