The Under-16 men’s team, Horouta, from Gisborne, show their style on the water at Karapiro. Lake Karapiro has been buzzing this week, with the 31st annual Te Wānanga o Aotearoa National Waka Ama Sprint Championships bringing a record 3850 paddlers from around the country to its waters, aged five to 82. The first Waka Ama Sprint Nationals was

held at Lake Karapiro in 1990, with 17 clubs and 43 teams taking part. This year’s event has 2168 race entries from 68 clubs take part in 406 races across a range of distances and age divisions. There has been a 42 percent increase in the number of paddlers over the

past five years. Waka Ama New Zealand CEO Lara Collins said the growing numbers had necessitated extending the 2020 event by a day, taking it from January 12-18. Competition started with around 700

youngsters aged 6-10 racing across 34 races, and 2154 paddlers, all under the age of 16, took to the water on day two. About 150 volunteers are helping out with the event, which is expected to draw more than 10,000 visitors to Mighty River Domain.

PostShop passes Christmas test By Viv Posselt

‘Busy but manageable’ is how Paper Plus Cambridge’s owner Hamish Wright described their first Christmas season as a PostShop outlet. “Overall, we’re thrilled at how it went,” he said. “The team will be going over it all during the next few weeks to see if there is anything we need to tweak for this year, but generally, we’re

happy with how it turned out. We’ll be looking at ways to ensure that doesn’t happen next year, and we could probably be better prepared for the key postal dates.”

From scouts to infrastructure… By Liz Stolwyk Deputy mayor, Waipā District Council What a great start to 2020 with a spread of high-profile events and groups visiting over the past few weeks. You would be hard pushed not to have spotted a number (actually 3600) of scouts visiting Cambridge and Karapiro during their Jamboree stay at Mystery Creek in early 2020. It was a pleasure to host such a well-engaged and behaved group of youngsters. Waka Ama fever has

hit us this week. As I write this we have 2100 youngsters paddling today, 3800 for the week, by far our largest event at the domain. This is a big week for Cambridge and every year our accommodation providers, cafés and restaurants and supermarkets do an outstanding job hosting the thousands who attend. Not all things can run smoothly however. I keep an eye on our local Facebook pages and certainly encourage you to contact council on 0800waipadc or 8233800

to report any broken signs, recycling issues or pot-holes. Please, we need to hear as soon as these things happen so we can fix them straight away. Council meetings start in early February. Our Long Term Plan will be a priority this year and we do need to hear from you. If there are any large projects your club or organisation wishes to embark on, please make contact. And a regular question I get asked is ‘When will the new pool be ready?’ – the answer is mid-way

through this year. Most of our work as Councillors is on the policy side of things. For 2020 we will be looking at our Infrastructure strategy, development contributions policy, rates remission policy, revenue and financing policy, significance and engagement policy, and our Treasury management policy. If you are interested in engaging on any of these policies, please touch base. Or if you are in town on February 9, I will be in at the Trash n Treasure Lions

On the beat with DEB THURGOOD New year, new opportunities! Happy New Year to all. I hope that you had a safe and happy festive season and managed to get a good break. I’m excited to be increasing my column frequency to weekly in 2020, starting now. Thank you for taking time out from your day to read what I have to say and for your positive feedback. You can reach me on CambridgeCommunityLiaison@police.govt. nz. The start of a New Year is often a time when people introduce good habits into their lives and rid themselves of bad habits that no longer serve them. One technique is the 21/90 rule. Committing to a new personal or professional behaviour for 21 days in a row, cements it as a new habit. Continuing it for a further 90 days will make it a more permanent change. One local bad habit we are increasingly seeing relates to people not wearing cycle helmets. Since January 1, 1994, it has been a legal requirement for all cyclists to wear

a cycle helmet when riding their bikes. Did you know the fine for not wearing one is $55? That’s money I am sure most of us would rather keep in our wallets. This law came into effect purely to reduce the incidence of head injury amongst cyclists. Whatever your personal view on it, the law is the law. Hanging the helmet from your handlebars does nothing to protect your head and wearing the helmet with the strap undone increases the likelihood that it will not stay in place in the event of a fall or crash, rendering it useless. As a cycling town, Cambridge more than any should be aware of this, so let’s call each other out. If you are riding a bike, put on your helmet. Parents: make sure your kids keep them on. If you don’t have a helmet, buy one. Your head is worthy of the investment! Council to add a macron

Waipā District Council has adopted the macron, the first important step toward correct pronunciation of Waipā. Council is working to formally adopt the Māori orthographic conventions of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo as the standard for all internal and external documents, branding, and signage. Iwi liaison advisor Shane Te Ruki said it’s a crucial step in the right direction for Waipā, which until now had been using a translation with no relevance or meaning in Māori spoken or written language. ‘Wai’ means water, and ‘pā’ means to touch or reach, as in a sound reaching the ears. “Adopting the Māori orthographic convention will remove ambiguity and misunderstanding, and lift Waipā District Council’s standard of writing of the Māori language to that of best practice,” Te Ruki said. “Adding the macron simply recognises the importance of correct pronunciation of Waipā. “Realistically, it should’ve happened a long time ago. By formally adopting a standard Māori orthographic convention, we will be embracing change for the better,” he added. Council’s strategy and community services group manager, Debbie Lascelles, said Council is supportive of the use of the macron for the organisation, however in order to adopt the macron for the district, a formal process is required.

Formally changing the district’s name to Waipā requires an application to the New Zealand Geographical Board with evidence of consultation with affected people, including the local community and iwi. Te Ruki said it could take up to two years to fully adopt the Māori orthographic conventions of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo. “Bedding down such a change requires time and education for it to become second nature. We have a lot of work to do in that space, and we are working on it,” Te Ruki said. Evidence of the change was clear last week when a series of media releases with a tohutō (macron) on the ‘a’ in Waipa were sent to media. The decision reflects a change made by the Ōtorohanga District Council last August. That change was prompted by submissions from the Maniapoto Māori Trust Board. The South Waikato District Council began adding macrons to street names more than a decade ago. Most district councils who have acknowledged the need to show the long vowel in Māori have opted for a macron, though Waikato-Tainui prefers a double vowel – and for that reason the main lake in Cambridge is referred to as Te Koo Utu. The use of macrons was a question put to

council candidates by both the Cambridge News and Te Awamutu News ahead of last October’s local body elections and only one candidate of eight who responded, Lou Brown, opposed change. He raised questions about the cost of the change – though it appears the costs can be kept down. Council has already updated electronic logos for less than $100, and guidelines are in place for staff to follow.

Origins of Waipā

The name Waipā refers to the river and its valley. In the Ngāti Unu historical accounts, the naming of the river is accounted to Kahu. Kahu is the illustrious ancestress whose travels are remembered in the names of local mountains and features of the land including Kakepuku-te-rerenga-o Kahu, Pirongia-tearoaro-o-Kahu and Te Manga-waero-o-Kahu. In Kahu’s travels down from the shoulders of Mount Pirongia and across the nearby streams, she gazed at the scene and the possibility of a great river in the wide and far flung valley before her. Keen to explore, she began moving at pace towards the promising valley floor and soon found herself running. Her travelling companions called out to Kahu. They hurried to keep pace with Kahu and called out three times to their mistress asking why and to where she was running. Upon the third asking Kahu responded, “Kua pā mai te hou matāho o te wai ki aku taringa!” ‘The resonant sound of water hath reached my ears!’ In simpler words Kahu could hear the waters of a great river. ‘Wai’ water, and ‘pā’ to touch or reach, as in sound to the ears. Thus the simple conversion of Kahu’s words by her travelling companions gave rise to the river and its valley as we know it – Waipā.

Waikato seat grows in Police warn of boundary change plan fake $100 notes The major changes for Waipā in a proposed in an electoral boundary rejig will impact on Tim van de Molen’s Waikato seat. The Representation Commission proposals released late last year impact on half of New Zealand’s electorates and would see the establishment of a Flat Bush electorate in south Auckland. Electorate numbers are proposed to rise from 71 to 72. The number of general electorates in the South Island remains at 16, the number in the North Island increases from 48 to 49, and the number of Māori electorates remains unchanged at seven. The changes are open to public submissions – there were 332 objections logged by January 9, though none in the Waipā-Waikato region - and decisions will be made in April 2020. Some voters now in the Waikato electorate will find themselves in Hunua, and that electorate will be renamed Port Waikato. There will also be boundary changes for Waikato where it meets the Coromandel, Hamilton West and Taupō electorates. Notably, Tirau – now in the Taupo electorate – switches to Waikato under the proposals. The Taranaki-King Country electorate is one of

36 which are not touched by the review. The Taupo electorate loses an area north of Cambridge with a population of 1,200 to Waikato together with a larger area east of Putaruru and taking in Tīrau with population of 1,900. “Where possible the current boundaries have been retained to minimise the number of people affected by electorate boundary and name changes,” Representation Commission chair Judge Craig Thompson said. “Of the 71 existing electorates, 36 are unchanged. The adjustments in other electorates reflect changes in population since 2014 when the boundaries were last reviewed,” The biggest areas of change are in the Auckland region, Christchurch, and Otago and Southland. Details on the proposed changes can be found at the website www.vote.nz and the Proposed Electorates 2019 report is available at libraries, council offices, Electoral Commission offices and Te Puni Kōkiri regional offices. • Read MP Tim van de Molen’s comments on the proposed changes on Page 10

Judy’s story raises funds for the blind By Viv Posselt

A book chronicling the life of Cambridge’s Judy Hale has so far raised $2500 for Blind and Low Vision New Zealand (formerly The Blind Foundation) and Guide Dog Services. Sales from the book, entitled Bright Sunlight Dark Shadow, saw $1000 handed over to Blind and Low Vision NZ, and $1500 to Guide Dog Services in Hamilton last week. Judy and her long-standing guide dog Utah were accompanied to the handover by Samantha (Sam) Cutler, the personal historian with Forget-Me-Not Life Stories who helped put Judy’s extraordinary life story into print. Now a resident at Bupa St Kilda, Judy was once a familiar figure around Cambridge as she and her guide dog strolled through the streets. She lost her sight in the late 1980s, 10 years after being left a widow with three children and a farm to run, when she was dragged across a paddock by a panicked mare, resulting in a fractured skull and serious face damage, the loss of her right eye, her sense of smell and part of her memory. Meningitis struck in hospital a week later, and Judy embarked on a lengthy and arduous period of recovery. Before the accident, she led a full outdoor life that included gaining a certificate in horsemastership and turning her equinelinked hobby into a successful business. Horses went on to play a part in Judy’s recovery, as did the guide dogs who transformed her life. Determined to help others, she did motivational speaking, offered support through the Cambridge Blind and Vision Impaired Support Group, and raised funds for guide dogs.

Judy is delighted that funds raised through the first wave of book sales are going to a good cause. “I really don’t like stories about myself, but if this helps in some small way to support guide dogs, I am happy to do it. It is important for people to understand just how valuable guide dogs are to the blind.” More copies of Judy’s book are still available - contact Cambridge Paper Plus, or order a copy through Sam Cutler on 027 471 8015, or via Samantha.lifestories@gmail.com.

Did you make New Year’s resolutions? It is about now that the inherent difficulty of ‘cutting a new groove’ might be kicking in! The challenge with making New Year’s Resolutions is that after the first couple of weeks those intentions are prone to getting a bit bent…and it’s likely that after the first month they are broken! Why is it that we make resolutions and often find it so difficult to establish a new habit to replace old behaviours? The dictionary defines a ‘resolution’ this way… ‘to resolve and have fixed determination to follow a course of action, to have staying power, backbone, perseverance, staying power, tenacity’… you get the idea. Whatever our noble intentions might be in embarking on a new year it seems for most of us there is a propensity to start well, but then to drift. If we do change, we are prone to lapse back into old patterns. Like the bias on a bowling ball, a propensity to deviate from the pathway we’d like to follow, exists. Whatever our plan is - be it conquering a habit or addiction, to eat better, exercise more, to watch less TV, learn a new skill, show more patience and kindness, to grow in some character area…we’re going to be afflicted with inclination to compromise on our good intentions. One writer quipped that their new year’s resolutions were just “Casual promises to myself that I am under no legal obligation to fulfil”. It’s easy to generously forgive ourselves

to balm any sense of guilt over our failure and defeat. But inside frustration over our lack of willpower and impotence to change, lingers. Self-improvement gurus state that it takes 21 days to form a new habit. This idea was adopted from the work and writings of plastic surgeon, Dr Maxwell Maltz. In the 1950s he began noticing a pattern among his patients. Patients for example who had a nose job would take about 21 days to adjust to seeing their new face. Or amputees in Dr Maltz’s observation would sense a phantom arm or leg for about 21 days as they adjusted to their new situation. He concluded, “These, and many other commonly observed phenomena tend to show that it requires a minimum of about 21 days for an old mental image to dissolve and a new one to jell.” A book he published in the 60s became a best seller (30 million copies) and provided impetus for future well known self-help exponents to perpetuate the 21day selfchange model. But are helpful strategies and raw willpower enough to effect lasting change? No, not completely. The 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) offer insight into effecting any deep, lasting personal reformation… it refers to seeking the help of a ‘Higher Power’. This one true God can be known personally not in vague terms. Acknowledgment of needing His help triggers grace and power that will transform our lives from the inside out. May the Force be with you in 2020. BUSINESS SHOWCASE

Dr Alf Pinfold is a GP with a special interest in skin care. Based at Duke Street Health & Medical Centre, the passionate health advocate says hospitals are having trouble coping with the tsunami of patients with sun-damaged skin. NZ has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world. Each year in NZ over 4000 people are diagnosed with a melanoma – around 13 people diagnosed every day. These are devastating statistics and more care and education needs to be taken in preventing these conditions. Melanoma along with other types of skin cancer such as squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma are usually caused by UV exposure, although genetics appears to also play a role Increased risk factors include sun exposure, fair skin and childhood sun exposure. It only takes being sunburnt twice in your life to double your risk of developing a melanoma – everyone is at risk. Finding melanoma at an early stage is crucial as early detection can vastly increase your chances for cure. “Patients often underestimate the danger posed by skin cancer,” says Dr Pinfold. “Late detection can result in spread of the cancer to other organs. This is more common with late detected

melanoma and aggressive squamous cell carcinomas.” It is the regular full skin assessments that enable us to detect these lesions early giving the patient a better chance of survival and cure. Dr Pinfold is a member of the New Zealand skin cancer doctors’ group and is trained to detect and treat skin cancers. As part of the skin clinic service Dr Pinfold also performs the surgery and has a team trained in minor skin surgery who have the ability to provide this service in the community. This includes lesion removal, biopsies, liquid nitrogen, topical treatment and surgical excision with skin grafting or skin flaps if required Dr Pinfold encourages all of his clients to be sun smart, wear a good quality sunscreen and have annual skin checks and also to complete regular selfexaminations of their skin and if there are any new lesions or spots or lesions that appear to be changing in colour, shape or size, not healing, bleeding or weeping, then get them checked by a qualified and trained professional, early detection is your best option.. Blue smoke and pedals under a blazing sky

By Viv Posselt

The annual ‘Blue Smoke and Pedals’ meet and picnic event so loved by Waikato members of the Veteran and Vintage Car Club was run at the Cambridge Raceway on Sunday. The shift to the raceway was made to accommodate growing numbers of bikes and riders coming along to the event, said club member and event organiser Terry Pidduck. Over the past two decades, the event has been run at numerous venues, including at Mystery Creek, Taupiri, Tamahere, and for the past few years at the group’s club rooms in Cambridge’s Mclean St. Terry said the event was always popular, and the additional space offered by Cambridge Raceway was welcome in the face of growing numbers. Eighteen bikes showed up this year – up on last year’s number – with members coming from around the Waikato. Once again, it included an eclectic mix of old mopeds, scooters and low-powered motorcycles and twowheelers, some original

and some restored. The main criteria for entry to the fun event, said Terry, was the ‘blue smoke and pedals’ … a reference to the characteristics of the older two-stroke motorbikes, most of them around 100cc. “They’re generally just little bikes with pedals.” This year’s lot were put through their paces with a couple of races around a

marked course, an event that saw the riders toss rings around cut-outs of animal heads, another that called on riders to toss balls through holes, one where they had to pull a weighted rope while keeping the weight off the ground, and a ‘slow race’ in which riders were penalised if they put their feet on the ground while going really, really slowly.

January 11 farewell. Almost all knew exactly what he meant. “You were always worried when he called you aside and said ‘Now, listen old chap …’. Peter was very, very hard to say no to,” John smiled. His recollections of Peter’s five-decade involvement with Rotary dovetailed with those of family, friends and admirers. He was lauded for his fearless leadership, his caring for others, strong faith and passion for family. His passing on January 6 marked the end of an era. He had served Rotary at club, district and international level and as a district governor. He initiated and developed the Rotary Friendship Exchange Programme and organised New Zealand-wide fundraising for PolioPlus laboratories in India. Peter was the eldest of three children born to teacher parents. After completing his secondary schooling at Whanganui Collegiate, he studied teaching at university – it was there he met Jeanne Lee. The young couple married in 1949 and had four children, Ceridwyn, Robert, Stephen and Deirdre, who died a few years ago. Ceridwyn described her father as “strong and determined” to the end. He had an infectious sense of humour and a strong organisational gene which she said had passed down the family. “I remember him making up a timetable when he was teaching maths at Aranui High School in Christchurch, using filing cards, a hole punch and mum’s knitting needle. He and mum were a tight team. Mum’s death hit him hard … she had been the light and lightness in his life for 70 years.” Peter’s mathematics prowess and leadership within the teaching community was quickly recognised. he became headmaster of Dilworth School in Auckland, prompting those already in situ to wonder what this young man might do to a school that had been run like a military academy. On hand to find out was Murray Wilton, a onetime student, teacher and former principal at Dilworth who attended Peter’s farewell as the bearer of condolences from both the school and the Trust Board. “I was a young teacher at Dilworth when Peter arrived in 1967,” he said. “We all wondered how he would be, but we quickly learnt that this new leader had all the credentials required to take the school forwards. We knew we had a special man in charge.” Murray said that even as the school wrestled with the complex educational and social changes of the day, and tough financial constraints, Peter led from the top and achieved outstanding goals that remain in place today. “He was an exceptional man with a deep understanding of education, an almost missionary zeal to work for the underprivileged, an uncanny ability to find sensible solutions.” After 13 years in Auckland, the Parrs moved to Cambridge, where Peter took the reins as St Peter’s School principal from 1979 to 1987. The current St Peter’s School headmaster, Dale Burden, hailed the decisions made by Peter as ‘pivotal’. “He re-organised the curriculum so that it flowed from the youngest to the eldest students,” he said. “That is something that has been re-invented. It’s what is being done now, only it is called curriculum mapping. Peter improved administrative systems and made other changes … he was pivotal in the decision to enrol girls. He was a man who gave his time generously”, he said, “and left the school better than he had found it.” Both Peter and Jeanne were steadfast in their community involvement; even into his later years Peter helped out at SeniorNet, Citizens Advice Bureau and other groups. Peter was awarded the QSM in 2009 for services to the community. In delivering the sermon, the Most Rev Sir David Moxon said Peter would be held in the heart of St Andrew’s Church with its ‘highest respect’. “There could be no higher tribute to a lay person than Continued next page

Festival’s clarion call to artists By Viv Posselt

Artists, photographers and others of the creative persuasion are being encouraged to get involved in the 2020 Cambridge Autumn Festival by registering for the Autumn Art Market being held as part of the Main Street Carnival on Sunday March 29. The Art Market will run from 10am to 2pm on that day, with stalls spreading along the footpaths and under shop canopies in Cambridge’s main street where they will mingle with musicians, dancers and street theatre performers. Festival organiser Julie Epps said the call was out for stallholders to register before around March 20 to avoid disappointment. They’re looking for people wanting to display, demonstrate and sell their work; it could be art, photography, jewellery, pottery, mosaics or woodcraft, sculpture, food art,

fashion or more. The market is for original and unique pieces by individual artists. About 50 stallholders took part in the art market last year, and Julie is keen to see more this year. “We want as many as we can fit in,” she said, adding that a stall discount was being offered to demonstrating artists who come on board. “We particularly want demonstrating artists … it makes it more interesting for the public to watch an artist doing their work,” she said. “They can become stallholders at a special rate - at $10 a stall compared to the $25 for non-demonstrating artists.” Details about what is available, the costs and requirements are available on the festival website at cambridgeautumnfestival. co.nz. Those interested can also contact Julie via email at info@cambridgeautumnfestival. co.nz.

New boundaries: the process By Tim van de Molen MP for Waikato Each person in New Zealand counts, and has a voice – democracy demands this at its core. The Census, which is conducted every five years is a great indicator of the importance the New Zealand Government places on knowing the people who make up our country. Census is the main population tool which assists the Representation Commission to ensure that the electoral boundaries capture the right balance. The last review was conducted across 2013/14, and since then the population in every electorate has grown. Some electorates more than others, so boundary changes are required to balance the population in each electorate. On 19 November 2019, the boundary review proposal announced the addition of

one general electorate in the North Island, in South Auckland. With that, changes to 22 existing electorates were proposed because the population is currently outside of the permitted limit (64,899 is the North Island electorate quote, South Island 65, 458 and Māori electorates 67,582). One of the electorates to change is the electorate I represent, Waikato. The proposed new boundary for my electorate will take in 1,200 constituents around the St Kilda area of Cambridge, north of the Waikato Expressway, and will also take 1,900 constituents from my current boundary at the Piarere intersection, to south of Tirau, then east to the Kaimai Range. There are also changes to the Waikato electorate on the north, east and western boundaries. Of course, public consultation is a part of the decision making process. Objections

closed on 20 December, and from 10 to 24 January counter-objections can be made. The Representation Commission will then hold public hearings around the country to consider all submissions before releasing final boundaries in April. These new boundaries will be used for the 2020 and 2023 General Elections. All of the proposed changes can be found online; www.vote.nz or at your local library and council offices. It is also available in both of my electorate offices – 49 Broadway, Matamata and 190 Thames Street, Morrinsville.

I can appreciate that the process can be confusing, and many people feel unsettled by the shift between electorates. I am committed to working hard for the new communities that will be joining my electorate, as I do for the existing communities I serve, which I consider is a great privilege. I would love to hear your thoughts around the impact of these boundary changes, and I am keen to use this period of change as a positive time to learn more from you around the great aspects, opportunities and challenges which you see in your community.

A Good Local Media team comprising David Mackenzie, Gary Bulling and Roy Pilott today launch a new column which discusses one of their favourite topics - beer.

Pushing it to the Boundary I have to say that when this new plan was developed for a beer column – where one of us brings a six pack in for review – I was expecting to open with something slightly more exotic than the Boundary Road New Zealand Pale, tagged Flying Fortress. But as neither David or Gary had tried it, the choice wasn’t a bad one – and it certainly isn’t heavy on the wallet, retailing in many places for less than $13. Boundary Road Brewery was established in 2011 in Hunua and is now owned by Asahi Beverages (NZ) Ltd – which used to be Independent Liquor – and is part of the Japanese headquartered Asahi Beverages group of companies. Its range includes the excellent Stolen Base, an American double IPA, and it range introduced more than a decade ago has stood the test of time. BRB’s point of difference in the

usually hoppy Auckland market is that it leans more towards the malt with its pale ales. My preference is hoppy, but what I do like about BRB is its consistency. I knew what to expect from the six pack – and it delivered: a good solid, malty pale ale which endeared itself to me more on the second time of asking. The brewer notes “…we’ve added crystal, chocolate and caramel malts to make an awesomely complex, sweet, malt base which shouts of the toffee, roast and chocolate notes that go into it”. Flying Fortress is a modest 4.6%. Don’t be put off by the friendly pricing – this is a nice drop, presented in a box rather than a potentially bottle spilling cardboard wrap. It’s Gary’s round - check in next week for an update. Roy Pilott

Planning your wedding

Going from the excitement of getting engaged to planning your wedding can be a big step. Even if you’re planning a simple event, inevitably there will be things to navigate your way through. To reduce the stress, keep within budget and ensure you get the best day possible, draw up a stepby-step wedding planning checklist. Break it into manageable big picture chunks before drilling down to the fine details. A big checklist of “to do’s” is the best way to keep organised. From the venue, ceremony, décor, food and drink, to the guest list, invitations, attire, photographer and entertainment, a wedding comprises many moving parts. Whatever type or size of wedding you’re planning, break it down into smaller actionable steps. This will make it easier to get through and easier to delegate to your partner, friends, or family. First steps first: start a wedding planning spreadsheet • Draw up a guest list • Figure out your target wedding budget • Research venues and book a date

• Discuss ceremony options • Decide if the ceremony and reception will be at the same location • Select your wedding party • Find a wedding photographer and videographer • Choose a celebrant • Shop for wedding attire • Book a caterer; decide on menus • Arrange entertainment and florist • Send ‘save the dates’ • Plan/research wedding invitations • Organise a wedding cake • Book a hair stylist and make-up artist • Research honeymoon destinations • Set up a wedding registry • Buy wedding rings • Book wedding transport • Send invitations • Organise marriage licence • Put together a seating plan • Book accommodation for out-oftown guests • Finalise your ceremony outline • Create a wedding time-line • Rehearse a wedding dance • Write speeches • Print menu cards / name place settings

• Create a wedding playlist Before you embark on hard-core planning, sit down with your partner and figure out what your wedding priorities are. Don’t be reluctant to delegate – you can’t do everything yourself. The planning process often requires

frequent consultations with your dressmaker, photographer, celebrant, florist, DJ or band, venue managers and other key people. For peace of mind, make sure all your questions are addressed beforehand, and not left for the day.

Choosing a wedding venue 12 | CAMBRIDGE NEWS

Choosing your wedding venue is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make as an engaged couple. You’ll need to talk it over and ensure the venue you choose aligns with your collective vision. First, decide on the type of wedding you want then set a budget

low-key wedding surrounded by close friends and family. Once you know what best suits you as a couple, you can then start writing your guest list and begin searching for places to suit your requirements. Finding the perfect wedding venue isn’t easy. If an elegant ballroom, boutique hotel or fancy restaurant are out of your range, there are choices such as private or public gardens and parks, beaches, even barns if you’re going rustic. Modern weddings can be conducted in art galleries,

well-designed restaurant spaces, or warehouses. Much depends on your personal style. Your dream venue might be a quiet stretch of beach on a Pacific island. Many travel agents have destination wedding planners who can help and there are numerous overseas hotels that specialise in weddings. Consult together as a couple, talk to others or engage a planner who is familiar with the capabilities of space, layout and items needed to transform a venue. The aesthetic of the venue

is important to enhancing the wedding experience, both for you as a couple as well as your guests. Take into account the number of guests, level of comfort, how accessible the venue is and whether décor is required. Staging

the venue is another big consideration. It’s important to ask yourselves what feels authentic to you two as a couple, and to choose a space and a design that is a representation of who you are.

Henley Hotel

The chapel seats up to 70 guests while up to 250 wedding reception guests can be catered for in the Regatta Room. An outstanding cuisine service is available. From the ceremony and reception to the rehearsal dinner, the spacious Main Hall in the Sir Don Rowlands Centre has floor to ceiling windows for 180-degree lake views. Resorts and popular destinations fill up fast so usually need to be booked well ahead of time. Be aware of when school holidays fall as you may not want to share your romantic get-away with a bunch of noisy kids at a family resort. Plenty of resorts cater to couples and have all the romantic bells and whistles. Talk to travel experts to get insider knowledge on how to plan a honeymoon that’s low on stress, big on savings and full of the ‘wow’ factor for you. Ideally, honeymoon planning should be a joint effort. By working together, the trip will suit both parties and not be tipped in favour of one or the other’s preferences. A honeymoon is a time to relax, spend quality time together and create special memories that you’ll cherish forever. If it’s not immediately feasible straight after the wedding, then schedule it for a time that suits.
