Still living in limbo By Claire Robson
An email last week to Karapiro resident Geoff Fletcher and his wife Serena confirmed the news they didn’t want to hear, with no final decision on the new expressway between Cambridge and Piarere forthcoming in last Friday’s roading announcement by the Government. That means more uncertainty for the Fletcher family, which has been living on the same property since 1920. The New Zealand Transport Agency’s (NZTA) Central North Island Relationships Director, Parekawhia McLean, said the Cambridge to Piarere project is being reviewed “to evaluate whether it aligns with the new vision for our transport network”. This evaluation was not complete by the time of last Friday’s National Land Transport Plan (NLTP), so decisions on the entire corridor were not covered in the announcement, she explained. “This work will take up to four months to complete as our teams are not just looking at tweaks but are going back to first principles to establish what the right way forward is for these corridors,” Parekawhia said. That’s another four months of waiting for landowners in the path of the proposed expressway. To say that the Fletchers are embedded in the Karapiro community would be something of an understatement. Geoff has been president of the Karapiro Hall for the past 20 years, following in his father’s footsteps – his father, John, even helping install the trusses when the hall was built. Geoff has lived in the same place for his whole life, and still has no idea whether or not he will have to face the daunting prospect of both moving house and relocating his shed business. Continued on page 3
Geoff Fletcher still doesn’t know if he will have to move off the land his family has owned since 1920, as there is yet to be a final decision on the proposed new stretch of expressway between Cambridge and Piarere.

This week I spoke with Geoff Fletcher, whose property is one of those that would be needed if the proposed new Cambridge to Piarere expressway goes in. After a couple of years of uncertainly for Geoff, whose grandfather Charles bought the Karapiro land in 1920, last week’s National Land Transport Programme announcement has only prolonged the family’s agony. There has still not been a definite answer either way on the fate of the new road. And there won’t be for at least four months. Visiting the property, Geoff can point to trees his grandfather planted almost a hundred years ago, and it’s clear that he and wife Serena have a strong connection with the place. So it would be great if the Government would just
make a decision either way, because all this mucking around is just painful for everyone involved. Not to mention the plight of motorists along the notorious stretch of road between Cambridge and the Piarere turnoff, which safety improvements are apparently going to address. Time will tell if they will have the desired effect. In addition to all the news-related things that were going on this week, I managed to catch up with Leamington dog, Misty. While I am firmly on ‘team cat’, every time I drive past this adorable pooch with a love of balloons, I can’t help smiling. Hopefully the picture on page 11 will make you smile, too. And if you have a cute picture of your pet you would like to see in the paper, by

Editor, I just stopped in my vehicle at the pedestrian crossing opposite the medical centre and pharmacy on Shakespeare Street to let an elderly gentleman cross the road. A 4x4 vehicle heading south failed to see the man until it was almost too late, and the poor gentleman had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit as the vehicle slammed on its brakes. The poor man was shaken but luckily unharmed and the other driver also stopped and apologised - apparently, he was so busy looking for a carpark outside the medical centre he'd failed to check the crossing. My heart is still in my mouth after witnessing that! And I wondered if maybe a timely reminder was due for the community to watch their speed on Shakespeare Street and to take extra care at crossings. I'll drop this note to the police for their info also. Name supplied
Thank you, Cambridge – two weeks ago with the help of Cambridge News - Cambridge Lifeskills sent out an SOS to Cambridge community asking for your help to enable the
free Counselling Service for children and youth that has been in operation 25 years to continue and you have responded. This year we have received referrals for 140 children and young people and have a wait list. With the response from the Cambridge community Lifeskills are able to address the wait list in the short term which will make such a difference to those young people. A huge ‘thank you’ to those who have responded. This will certainly get us through until the end of this year, but Lifeskills are still going to have the same demand, if not more next year, so will continue to be searching for funds. If you would like to become a supporter, please consider joining with other businesses or individuals by becoming ‘Club 83’ members, where for around $20 per week you can become part of the ongoing sustainability solution for Cambridge Lifeskills and ensuring our Cambridge kids continue to have access to free Counselling. Bunker restoration complete
By Claire Robson
A small dedication ceremony marked completion of restoration of the aviation fuel bunker overlooking Lake Te Koo Utu in Cambridge, reflecting the importance of the Aviation Reserve 9 (AR9) secret bunker in the country’s military history. Joining the mayor and other guests were representatives of the family of Richard Edward Isaacs, who was killed at the site in 1943 when fire broke out and destroyed four huts in the early hours of October 14. Possibly due to secrecy surrounding the location of the bunker, the Isaacs family had
always thought Richard died at Trentham Military Camp near Wellington, so it was news to them when community board member Julie Epps tracked them down to invite them to Cambridge for Monday’s dedication ceremony. Just 20 when he died, the fire was apparently caused by Richard smoking in bed, which greatnephew Tom Isaacs said was a lesson to everyone not to do that. Community board chair Mike Pettit ran through the history of AR9, dispelling the myth that the pump house was a bomb shelter with a tunnel that ran to the town hall, providing an escape route for the mayor in case of an air raid.
In 1942, facing the threat of a Japanese invasion in the South Pacific, Cambridge was chosen as the site of a secret aviation fuel depot called Aviation Reserve 9 (AR9). A 600,000 gallon (2.7 million litre) tank was sunk into a 60 foot (18 metre) hole at the top of the hill, with a top diameter of 130 feet (40 metres) and a bottom diameter of 72 feet (22 metres). Gum trees and other fast-growing vegetation was planted to hide it from the air. With the railway yard at the top of the hill, the first fuel delivery arrived on August 27, 1942. Up to 11 rail tank cars arrived each week to refuel the tank. The concrete building was the pump house, and fuel from the tank was pumped down to trucks below – where the carpark is today. Fuel was taken to RNZAF sites, including at Rukuhia, A blueprint map of the AR9 area from the National Archives, showing position of the which is now Hamilton Airport. guardhouse, railway, and tank. Still living in limbo “Moving is mind-blowing for someone who has never moved in their entire life,” Geoff said, adding that it’s just lucky he’s not a hoarder. It’s been quite a process for the couple to come to terms with the situation over the past couple of years since the new road was mooted, with all scenarios for the route involving them losing their home. “We had just started to get our heads around it, then all of a sudden the new government came in and the rules changed.” Feeling something like a political football, Geoff is left wondering what will happen in the event of a change of government in the 2020 election. “They (politicians) are just going to
turn us on and off like a tap,” Geoff said. It’s the delay he has a beef with, not the project company managing the possible new road, Opus, who he said have been excellent to deal with. They have even agreed the family can use wood from the trees planted by Geoff’s grandfather, Charles Fletcher, to make furniture if they have to leave. It’s not much, but it will preserve some connection with the land for the family, and Geoff is grateful for that. Local MP Louise Upston has also voiced her criticism of the delay in a final decision, saying that the level of risk facing motorists along the stretch of road between Cambridge and Piarere will only grow as the
Continued from page 1
road inevitably gets busier, which she said is “unacceptable”. And Louise also doubts that proposed safety improvements will be enough in the long-run, either. “The Government is completely not listening to the region on this.” The Fletchers know all about the risk of that stretch of road, with Geoff describing his driveway as “the most dangerous driveway in New Zealand”. With cars turning right into the café over the road while vehicles pass them on the inside, pulling out of the driveway is a perilous endeavour. And who knows how much longer they will have to do it, as the Fletchers remain in limbo.
This idea got a joking thumbs up from Mayor Jim Mylchreest, however sadly for Jim it was an urban myth – the tunnel only runs 40 metres into the hillside to the fuel tank. Mike thanked Merv Cronin, who took the restoration of the fuel bunker to the Cambridge Community Board for their consideration, as well as C & R Developments, Waipa Civil, local historian Dave Homewood, council’s community facilities manager Bruce Airey and the camouflage painters from the community board and Cambridge Primary School.
Belgians on the hunt By Claire Robson
With centenary of Armistice in November fast approaching, the search is on for any relatives of Mrs Herbert Lowthorpe Nixon (née Elise King Veale), who is buried in the Hautapu cemetery. Mrs Nixon is one of 33 Kiwi women awarded the Queen Elisabeth medal for service to Belgium in WWI, along with Mrs Margaret Reynolds, who is also buried at Hautapu. The Belgian embassy in Australia has reached out to the Waipa District Council for help in tracking down any descendants of the women who may still be in the area, as they would like to restore and mark their graves with a special plaque to commemorate the end of World War 1 in November. Waipa District Councillor Sue Milner said they have located relatives of Mrs Reynolds, but they have not had similar luck with Mrs Nixon. Naomi Tarrant from the Belgian embassy in Canberra said there was not much information on record about Mrs Nixon, however an initial report from the Ministry of Culture and Heritage said newspaper articles from the time indicated she was involved in “various patriotic activities”. Sue said that a lot of funds were raised for the people Belgium during WWI, with more than 95 per cent of the country under German occupation for the duration of the war. “There was quite a bit of effort to help the Belgians,” she explained. Members of the Reynolds family are still residing locally, and it’s hoped the same will be true of the Nixon or Veale families. Mrs Nixon did not have any children and her husband died just months after she did, with the pair lying side by side in unmarked graves at the Hautapu cemetery. If anyone has any information that might help locate Mrs Veale’s family, please contact Waipa District Councillor Sue Milner on 07 827 3137 or email randsmilner@gmail.com.

Te Waka initiative launched By Claire Robson
Economic Development Minister Shane Jones formally launched a two-day economic development summit at Karapiro last week, asking the 250 key business leaders to dig deep and come up with ideas to drive prosperity in the region. “You know your community better than I do…you serve up projects and we will meet you half way and fund the projects,” he said, adding that the Government is particularly keen on cases where infrastructure can be improved in the regions. The Waikato Regional Economic Development
Agency which was hosting the summit, was renamed Te Waka: Anga Whakamua Waikato: Waikato moving forward, in an announcement by the agency’s chair, Dallas Fisher. “Te Waka signifies what drives us, what binds us, and what propels us forward,” Dallas said. Reiterating that the Government’s Provincial Growth Fund - $3 billion to be spread over 3 years – is designed to get his figurative ‘nephs’ (nephews) off the couch, Minister Jones reminded the audience that the greatest gift a region has is its people. He then joined Dallas Fisher in making the first
Swapping daffs for cash
Daffodil Day volunteers were out in force last week, stocking the town with beautiful bouquets of daffodils and raising funds for the Cancer Society’s biggest annual fundraiser. Over 20,000 blooms were sold in Cambridge, generously donated by local growers who wished to remain anonymous, and who also donated the flowers to fundraisers in Te Awamutu and Morrinsville. Members of the Cambridge Girl Guides and a few Cambridge locals braved last Thursday’s wet weather to help pick the daffs in time for the Friday and Saturday fundraising drive. The Cancer Society’s Waikato/Bay of Plenty fundraising manager, Catriona Findlay, said the total raised this year in Cambridge was $20,713, which smashed last year’s figure of $14,180. “We’re absolutely thrilled with this result; it speaks volumes to the generosity of the Cambridge community. A huge thank you must go to Nicky and the team of local volunteers who stepped up to make Daffodil Day a success, Volunteers Dave Devaney and Janet McComb, with some of the 20,000 as well as all the individuals and organisations daffodils that were sold in Cambridge during last week’s annual Cancer who supported the appeal,” Catriona said. She started just as the Cambridge section of the Waikato Expressway was about to come on stream; just how it would affect the town was unknown. Together with Steve Tritt and Dr Nick Marsh, she started Vision Cambridge, a group bent on creating a conversation about how Cambridge wanted to develop given the expressway’s impact. “As it was, we saw an immediate calming of traffic during that initial December/January period. Tania Witheford’s last major function in her capacity as Cambridge Chamber of Commerce CEO was the recent 2018 Waipa Networks Business Awards. She had announced her impending departure several months ago but agreed to support the Chamber until the August 31 awards were over. That arrangement meant a spot of juggling on her part, as on July 9 Tania started in her new role – that of executive director of Community and Enterprise Leadership Foundation (CELF), a charitable organisation offering leadership development programmes to businesses and not-for-profit organisations. The time was right to move on, she said, adding that she has derived great satisfaction from her four years there. “For me, it has really been about
there,” she said. The constantly evolving business environment has seen over half of the businesses in the CBD change hands during the past 18 months or so, Tania said, and there were many opportunities ahead. “Being Chamber CEO gave me a
more holistic view of business,” she added. “You realise that while our focus is on Cambridge, the town is part of Waipa, and as such, is part of something bigger than itself. A big part of that is realising how we need to work together to get outcomes.”

Students at Cambridge High and St Peter’s School have been hearing the ins and outs of Youth Parliament from local MP Louise Upston, someone whose political career was sparked back in her school days. Held every three years, the Youth Parliament is a chance for students to represent their peers as part of a Youth Advisory board, and for one of them, to be the Youth MP for the electorate. Back in 1988, Louise took part in a similar event to Youth Parliament, known as Parliament Week, as a 7th former at Rangitoto College. She travelled with her peers to the Parliament Buildings in Wellington, taking part in a schools’ debate in the upper legislative chamber. Despite losing to Auckland Grammar, Upston said that was really where her parliamentary career began. “I remember standing in that room, debating, and just feeling this overwhelming sense of, that’s where I want to end up,” she said. Thirty years later, Louise was visiting local schools

Is the glass half-full or half-empty? There is a lot of talk around currently about the state of the world economy and when the next recession may raise its ugly head. As Investment Advisers we are guided by the fundamentals. It is perhaps as easy to present a ‘bullish’ case at the moment, as it is to present a ‘bearish’ one. The ‘bulls’ point to solid global growth, falling unemployment levels in many countries, the United States economy surging ahead, ongoing fiscal stimulus in some major economies and rising commodity prices, all as evidence that the current growth cycle still has a period of time to run. The ‘bears’ are enticed by rising household debt levels, weakening productivity, United States Federal Reserve interest rate hikes, trade wars and an ageing population in developed economies. At Forsyth Barr we remain confident that the current economic cycle is intact and look to evidence to support investment decisions. Whilst there are some ‘red flags’ emerging, earnings growth is positive in many economies and a number of factors that pre-dated the last major downturns of 1999 and 2008 are simply not in existence now. Our glass is perhaps more full than empty, with the risk of spillage present at any time. We are therefore focused on ensuring that our clients investment portfolios are appropriately positioned based on their personal circumstances and investment objectives.

Gaslight show a trip in time By Sophie Iremonger The Gaslight Theatre’s latest show, Domestic Bliss, is certainly one for the ladies – though I’m sure men would enjoy it too. It looks at the lives of three women in different decades – the 50s, the 70s and the 2000s – showing their daily lives and the expectations that come with them. The common denominator is that they’re all living in the same house, and when a sudden shift in space and time causes them to come together, hilarity initially ensues, followed by a heartwarming comparison and realisation of the differences between their realities. Seeing the women together not only highlights the contrasts between themselves and their eras, but also, in my opinion, shows how each woman can learn from one another, with the values and differences of each era. The 1950s-woman,
Grace (Janine Swainson), learns a thing or two from the newly-empowered 1970s-woman Jackie (Rye Inglis), about taking pride and action in her creative flair, without worrying about her husband. And Jackie can learn a few things from modern woman Sarah (Jo Wadsley) about climbing the career ladder well beyond the first rung. In turn the two more modern women can

New sports turf on the cards Balloon-loving By Viv Posselt St Peter’s Catholic School is busy fundraising for a new sports turf intended to turn their main lawn into an all-weather playing surface for a range of sporting activities. Raising the $155,000 or so required is well underway, said school principal Grant Stuart, with around $30,000 already in hand. A series of fundraising activities are planned to swell that figure, including the school’s gala in November, and the annual fun run in March next year. Grant said he hoped the turf would be in place in about 18 months. A well-attended screening of
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again at Cambridge’s Tivoli Cinema on August 22 added a further $1700 to the turf pot. The event was the school’s second movie fundraiser organised by its PTFA (Parent, Teacher and Friends Association). The wet winter has only enhanced the need for an allweather turf, said Grant. “Our fields have been muddy and water-logged … our children have had to practise for hockey and other sports on concrete. The lawn is so puggy that for the most part,

the concrete is also their only play area for a large part of the year. It’s far from ideal.” “The new turf’s multi-sport playing surface will cater to a range of sports, including netball, hockey, tennis, futsal [a variation of football], and touch rugby. And the surface we have selected will have an underlay, which will make it softer for the children if they fall on it.” The turf will be laid across a 35m x 45m area; several trees will have to be shifted, as will the rugby posts and the sandpit.

Editor, It was great to see members of our National cycling squad teams giving of their time to take part and cheer on competitors at the Trike Games at the Avantidrome last Thursday. It was an amazing hour .... the joy and excitement on the athlete’s faces was something to behold, and the expressions on their faces at the prizegiving is something I will never forget. I caught up with Leamington celebrity dog and balloon-lover Misty on Wednesday morning, out for a walk with her owner Nicole Mackenzie and sister Bella. Nicole said seven-year-old Misty has been heavily into balloons for the past five years, and she always has a bag on hand for the pooch. Over the years, Nicole said hundreds of people have stopped to take a photo with Misty, who seems to have the effect of making people smile. MORTGAGE MATTERS
Why use a Mortgage Broker? By Gavin Lynch – Yes Mortgages In the present loan market, most lenders are changing their criteria in regards to what, how much and to whom they lend. This makes it even more important to use a mortgage broker so you know you are getting the right mortgage and right lender to suit your needs. I believe every client has a unique borrowing scenario and time needs to be taken with the client to understand and analyse this, so a correct lending plan and structure can be put in place to achieve goals. In this column, I want to explain briefly the role of the mortgage broker and what I can offer. The key role of the mortgage broker is to make the whole loan process easier for you, the client. This is possible because: I can look at all the lending options. I deal with more than 25 different lenders and work to find the best lender to suit your unique situation. • I can do all the ‘leg work’ with the lenders. • This saves you time and avoids pitfalls in getting a loan approved. • I can negotiate rates, fees, and legal contributions with certain lenders to obtain the best deal for the client. • I can meet at a convenient time and place for the client. • This can be in the home or workplace and after hours if need be. • I can advise on the best loan structure to suit the client’s need. And best of all using a broker is a free service in most cases. Now that has to be worth thinking about! If your looking for a mortgage, please give me a call and I can help you though the whole process.

Cricketers make promising squad By Sophie Iremonger Cricket players at St Peter’s School have had their perfection on the pitch recognised by the leading cricket association in this half of the North Island. Northern Districts Cricket – the home of one of New Zealand’s six firstclass cricket teams – has handpicked students from around the region to join their “promising players” squad, which gives the upand-coming cricketers the chance to train at Seddon Park with the region’s top coaches and potentially gain selection into a Northern Districts agegrade team. “It’s always a privilege to get high honours, especially with Northern Districts,” said Logan Tindall, who was selected to join the promising players squad along with Lochlan Bolstad, a fellow member of the school’s
First XI squad, after the Year-10 pair stood out at the Junior Secondary Schools Northern Districts cricket tournament. Year 13 student Tiger Houston was also selected for the promising players squad at the senior Northern Districts cricket tournament, and Emma Baker, another St Peter’s student, has made the Northern Districts Women’s cricket team after playing for the Northern District’s Women’s U21 side last season. All age grades are involved in the promising players squad – colts, under 16s, under 18s – training about once a fortnight with a number of highly qualified cricketers including Northern Districts coach Cliff Dickerson, a former elite Northern Districts player and first-class left arm spinner. “It’s great to be a part of it,” said Lochlan, who along with

But that was when Hamilton Boys upped their game and clawed their way back to a 5-5 draw at full time, calling for a sudden-death faceoff. “Hamilton Boys peppered our goalie James Burns with shots for a solid five minutes but couldn’t get anything past him,” said coach Anthony Warrington. “It wasn’t until the second period of overtime that Hamilton Boys managed to get a scrappy hockey-style goal as the ball was on the floor in front of our goal and end the game. “It was really unfortunate for us, but as coach I couldn’t have been more happy with how my team played and there were smiles all around.” Player of the day went to Year 9 player Connor Gould, who “came out of the gate with a fire in his belly,” said Warrington. “He was really getting stuckin and I was pleased to see him enjoying himself so much.” The playoff against Hamilton Boys for third place in the season will take place this Sunday at 5.30pm at the Hamilton Inline Hockey Centre, Old Farm Rd. “After Sunday’s game this will make for some entertaining Lacrosse should anyone want to come and support the Cambridge High School boys,” said Warrington.

Respectable finish for Reds By Josh Easby
After six seasons out of the competition, Cambridge fans can be satisfied with the Reds’ mid-table finish in football’s Northern League. The club secured 7th place in the 12-team second division in its return season, creating the platform for improvement next year. The side lost their final fixture of the season 2-0 to champions Takapuna on Saturday. The sides battled out a scoreless first half before Takapuna’s Ben Allan broke the deadlock in the 54th minute. Matthew Chant made sure of the win with his side’s second goal, seven minutes from full-time. It was a double blow because earlier in the day, the Reds reserves lost the curtain-raiser 6-2 in a match that decided the Lotto NRFL reserves competition. Going into the match at Taharoto Park, Cambridge knew only a win was good enough to pip the Aucklanders for the title. They got off to a great start, taking an early lead through striker Adam Brady. However, Takapuna levelled from the penalty spot in added time of the first half, sending the teams into the interval tied at one all. Within minutes of the second half starting, Takapuna took the lead for the first time and then quickly added goals three and four. Knowing they needed at least four
Members of the Cambridge D1 side line up for their last game of the season. goals to secure the title, Cambridge threw themselves forward and youngster Jack Sickelmore reduced Takapuna’s lead to 4-2. The home side had the final say, scoring twice late in the game to ensure Takapuna could boast the reserves title to go with the second division trophy their first team had already clinched last month. Meanwhile, the Cambridge D1s beat Tokoroa 6-2 at John Kerkhof Park to end their season on a high. Goals from Peter Buesnel (4), Dave
O’Donnell and Tony Dikmans (penalty) saw Cambridge coast to a comfortable win. Goalkeeper Paul McCann saved a penalty. The win kept alive the team’s hopes of winning the divisional title but only until news filtered through from Te Aroha where home side Cobras had taken the title with a 1-0 win against Cambridge D2s. The Cambridge women did not play on the weekend but will wrap up their league schedule with a match against Matamata Swifts on Sunday.
The team has already clinched second spot in the competition, as well as being runners-up in the Waikato Women’s Cup, but are looking to finish with a win as a tribute to veteran goalkeeper Jen Hull. Hull joined Cambridge seven seasons ago, from Matamata, and has since played more than 120 times for the club, appearing in four cup finals and captaining the side for the past two seasons. Hull - known to all and sundry as ‘Stoney’ - has decided to call an end to her football career this season.

Roto-o-Rangi School cross-country Supplied by Deb Thurgood A big digger arm created the unusual start/finish line for the Roto-o-Rangi School Cross Country last Friday. Held annually at the Wallis Farm/Quarry opposite the school, students competed on an undulating, scenic Roto-o-Rangi route. It was a great, fun challenge. Not every school cross country has a milk tanker arriving mid-race! All students took part, divided into age groups and then senior students raced for the honour of winning the Boys’
and Girls’ Cup Races. The students put considerable effort into training in the weeks leading up to the event and a bit of rain didn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm. They were cheered on by a crowd of family supporters from within the school community. Roto-o-Rangi School students will next be racing alongside their peers at the annual Rural Schools’ Cross Country Championship, Mighty River Domain, Lake Karapiro today (Friday, September 7).

Fingers, forks, and food
The world is divided into three methods of eating — fingers, forks and chopsticks. Fingers obviously came first so when and how were forks and chopsticks introduced? Finger eaters are still in the majority with most of Africa, the Middle East and India still using small pieces of flat bread to mop up their food. Forks were originally used as a kitchen implement but more refined forks became popular when it was realised that they
were ideal for eating hot food. Even so, many a head of state including England’s Queen Elizabeth 1 and France’s Louis XIV still ate with their fingers. In 1897 British navy sailors were forbidden to use knives and forks because they were considered unmanly. The Chinese of course realised the benefits of their version of forks well before Western countries — finely diced food is impossibly sloppy to eat with your fingers and chopsticks were the answer. And there doesn’t appear to be any history of
Chinese flat breads. Now forks are common, table etiquette can be confusing. Spare a thought for author Oscar Wilde when confronted with a table elaborately laid with numerous eating utensils said, “The world was my oyster but I used the wrong fork.” Here are some winter celebrations delights to eat with your fingers or forks.
SALMON & MANGO WITH GINGER DRESSING Serve in small glasses, demitasse coffee cups or tiny noodle boxes. 180g hot smoked salmon 1 mango, stoned, peeled and diced 12 coriander leaves freshly ground black pepper to taste juice 1 lime or lemon 1/2 cup Japanese mayo 2 teaspoons finely grated root ginger 1 teaspoon soy sauce Discard the salmon skin and dice the flesh. Place alternately with the diced mango and coriander leaves in six small glasses or similar. Season. Drizzle with the juice. Top with the mayonnaise combined with the ginger and soy sauce. Serves 6.

CORNY CHEESE BAKE Bake ahead and reheat in the microwave, if required. Great served hot or at room temperature. 4 eggs 1 cup cream 2 x 410g cans creamed corn 2 x 420g cans corn kernels, drained 2 tablespoons sugar 1/4 cup rice flour 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika salt, freshly ground black pepper and chilli powder to taste 1/4 cup finely chopped parsley 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese, 3 cups shredded tasty cheddar cheese, Preheat the oven to 180°C. Lightly grease a 2.5 litre nonstick baking dish. Whisk together the eggs and cream in a large bowl. Add the creamed corn, corn kernels, sugar, rice flour, smoked paprika, salt, pepper and chilli powder. Mix well to combine. Add the parsley, parmesan, and cheddar cheese and mix again. Pour into the prepared dish. Bake for 70-80 minutes, or until the bake is nicely browned on top but still a little soft in the centre. Stand for a couple of minutes before serving. Cut into squares to serve. Great accompanied by a chilliflavoured chutney and sour cream. Serves 20-24 as a nibble with drinks.

People in Business Norris Ward McKinnon Phil Hyde
Norris Ward McKinnon Odette Cottle
What is the best thing about the work that you do? Having the trust of my clients. It’s great knowing your clients trust you to provide advice or assistance that is valuable to them. What drives you to succeed? There is nothing better than getting a good outcome for clients, whether that be getting a deal negotiated, advising them through a tricky situation or just giving them peace of mind that everything is dealt with. What was your first job? When I was 15 I pushed trolleys in a car park of a local supermarket for about $5 per hour. Working in the cold, rain and darkness are some of my strongest memories. What did you want to be when you were at school? I had plans to be an architect. I’m not sure why exactly, as I never was really any good at art or design, but it just seemed like a cool job. I ended up playing to my strengths in subjects like English and history, which was probably a wise move. When did you know that this was the career you wanted? Not until very late in my last year of high school. I was considering either law or management, and in the end decided law was for me. Where did you study and what degrees do you hold? I studied at the University of Waikato and obtained a Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours, plus a second major in history. What do you believe contributes to your success? Working alongside a number of amazing people, including my colleagues at the office, who are remarkably talented and friendly; my clients, a number of whom I have worked with closely for years; and others, who although newer, are doing some really exciting things.
Did you have any mentors throughout your career and how did they influence your decisions? My mum and dad have been a pretty influential mentors to me. They both ran their own successful businesses, which taught me that if you want something you have to go out there and work hard for it. Where did you study and what degrees do you hold? I hold a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) through the University of Waikato. I strongly believe it doesn’t matter what university you get your degree from, it’s what you do with it that counts. When did you know that this was the career you wanted? It wasn’t until after my first legal job. I seriously considered leaving the industry as I had come to the conclusion that I wasn’t really cut out for the job. I hated the long hours and pressure of trying to always be one step ahead of the next solicitor. I knew pretty quickly after starting at Norris Ward McKinnon that this is where I wanted to be. Amongst other things, our firm has a really good culture about work life balance. What sets your business apart from others in the area? Our firm is made up of separate teams who are experts in a specific area. This is not only great for our clients, as we can make sure they are getting the best advice possible, but also for the staff as it’s so beneficial being surrounded by people with a huge complementary base of knowledge.
Norris Ward McKinnon is a full-service firm of legal advisors based in Hamilton City. We’ve been proudly helping Waikato families and businesses for nearly 100 years. How we treat our clients determines our success, which is why we put emphasis on not just our legal skills, but on rapport and relationships. Our team has specialist knowledge backed by proven experience. We are Waikato people, familiar with the needs of our clients, who come from diverse industries, business, and personal backgrounds. Our philosophy is “no surprises”, in relation to our service and our fees. We have only the best people on our team. We guide, advise, and help to plan your legal matters, working alongside you and in line with your best interests. We invite you to get in touch; visit our Hamilton City office; ask us to come to you; or arrange to Skype when it suits you. Our website details our full range of legal services.

People in Business Multiplesupplements.com Alan Garvin
Generation Homes Trevor Roberts
What is the nature of your business? Multiplesupplements.com is a dietary supplement company that provides specific supplements to help reduce the symptoms of multiple sclerosis and other neurological conditions, and ultimately improve quality of life.
What is the most interesting part of your work/ business day? The most interesting part of my business is the variety. From dealing with happy customers and delivering dreams, to negotiating with landowners and developers to secure future land deals, every day is different.
What inspired to you become self employed? I saw a need in the market. Supplements like D-Biotin weren't available in the quantity I required as an MS fighter. D-Biotin has been researched to have considerable health benefits to people with MS. It greatly improved my symptoms and I wanted others to experience the benefits. Hence, Multiplesupplements.com was launched. We were the first supplier of 100,000mcg D-Biotin capsules worldwide. Other complementary supplements have since been added to our flagship products.
How long have you been in business and what do you think drives your success? I've been involved in the building and construction industry for 35 years. Over this time I've learned the importance of having a strong, honest and enthusiastic team behind me to ensure customer satisfaction. Generation Homes’ unwavering values, built on trust, teamwork and responsibility, reflect the high standards I have always shown in my own building company. I entered into a partnership with Generation Homes in March 2012. Having lived all my life in Hamilton, I am very familiar with the Waikato and know the Waipa and Matamata areas well.
What is the most interesting part of your business day? Conversing with people all over the world who have an interest in MS and health. They're either health professionals or people with MS wanting to talk about supplement options. We ship worldwide and to some very unusual addresses.
What did you do before you became self-employed? Before joining Generation Homes six years ago as a joint venture partner I spent well over three decades managing my own local building company. This entailed delivering a variety of successful projects to happy customers, with projects ranging from house alterations to architectural designed homes. These experiences allowed me to transition into my joint venture role with Generations Homes very easily.
What drives you? The opportunity to create something better for people with MS. I’m passionate about researching, and furthering my understanding of how people with MS are living, and what is working for them. It's all about making things available and safe to use, which is the key for an incurable chronic disease. I'm currently working on several other projects, including a mobility scooter, which you may have seen me riding around town on. I receive incredible heart-warming emails from customers with success stories, which push me on to think and deliver more.

People in Business Harcourts Peter Fox Worthington
Cooney Law Michael Jones
What is the most challenging thing about your work? I’m probably quite noticeable as a Harcourts Real Estate salesperson as my face is on signs all over town. It's a challenging profession that I love. I'm very careful, diligent and successful. I know that real estate is not only about houses, it’s also about people, their financial security, and ultimately, their happiness.
How did you get into the business you're in? I made the decision to study law and business when I was leaving high school. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do at that stage. My dad was a lawyer and he suggested law would be a good degree to hold, even if I didn’t want to be a lawyer. Within a semester a university, I realised my brain was more suited to the law study than the business study so I dropped the business portion of my study and concentrated on law. When I graduated, I got a job in a law office and stayed with it.
What did you do before you became self-employed? I was a jeweller in Auckland. Having travelled the world, my wife and I decided, once we had two little girls to raise, that there was a more rounded life to gain. Cambridge seemed right for us. Selfemployment in real estate allows a good work/family balance. What goals have you set for yourself? Being top in real estate but also useful to society. Every day I do something good for someone without expecting payment or payback. As a volunteer youth leader for Cambridge St John, I train local youth in a variety of life and medic skills. Teaching them skills and good values that will help them have happier lives is my legacy. What other interest/hobbies do you have? I currently head a Waikato-wide charity organisation, am a Knight Templar and am invested as a Knight of the Order of St John of Malta; both orders of chivalry and charity. It's an honour and joy for me to serve. What drives you to succeed? Simple philosophy: Work hard, be fair, help others and become an accomplished and interesting person.
What's the best thing about doing the work that you do? I get real satisfaction from helping people. There’s a great feeling from ringing a client to let them know that I just deposited funds from a sale to their account or that they can pick up the keys to their new house. Sometimes, I’m asked to prepare a contract that is slightly different. It’s enjoyable working out how to do it and getting the feedback from the client. Ultimately though, the best part of the job is meeting and chatting to nice people. What sets your business apart from others in the area? I think we’re very approachable and accessible. We provide quality services but without the arrogance that is often attributed to lawyers. Most of our clients would say we talk to them in plain English and that they are not intimidated when they come to see us. What advice would you give someone starting out in business? Back yourself but make sure you do lots of homework. You need to know all the risks and have plans to deal with them – like insurance and/or a safety net if something goes wrong. The 111 Report POLICE Tuesday, August 28 A couple received a phone call from a scammer claiming to be from Spark. They gave the scammer remote access into their computer and were convinced to turn off their cell phones (so their bank could not contact them). The scammers have then made two bank transactions, taking nearly $28,000, of which the bank has so far retrieved $19,000. Thursday, August 30 A vehicle was stolen from an address on Aspin Rd, Te Miro, between 12.30 and 1.45pm. The vehicle was found the following morning burnt out in a field approximately 8km away on Maungakawa Rd. Friday, August 31 A burglary has occurred at Cambridge Sheet Metals on Carters Cres overnight. Offender(s) have driven through and damaged the front gates to gain access to the premises, also damaging a tandem trailer. A burglary has occurred in a fenced in yard next to the Karapiro Mobil. Fifteen trucks had their batteries stolen, with an approximate value of $10,000. CCTV shows a white van leaving the scene around 2.30am. A petrol drive-off has occurred at the BP Station on Shakespeare St around 6.15pm. A female driving a silver Toyota Allion left having put over $65 worth of petrol into the vehicle, making no attempt to pay. CCTV is available. Sunday, September 2 A Mazda Demio was stolen from outside a house on Alpha St after 6pm. It was used in the early hours of Monday morning to ram-raid Stirling Sports on Victoria St. The vehicle was found still running outside the premises. The fire brigade and police were called to a fire on Princes St around 1.30am. Occupants of the house awoke to find a mat at the back door on fire which had burnt the outer wall. Police and fire are investigating. There were four family harm related incidents and two bail breaches were reported in Cambridge in the last week. If you have any information about any of these crimes, please contact the Cambridge Police or report it anonymously via Crime Stoppers 0800 555 111. A priest with a haunted past and a novice on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun in Romania and confront an evil force in the form of a demonic nun. Together they uncover the order's unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront this hostile nun that first terrorized audiences in 'The Conjuring 2’. The Abbey becomes an horrific battleground between the living and the damned.
Christopher Robin is a truly wonderful and loveable film about the importance of family and friends on one's life. Not only written incredibly well and acted perfectly, the film has a lot of realism to it, even with talking stuffed animals as part of the cast. Blending very real everyday hardships with fantasy gives the film a contrasting look at how bleak the world is when we don't realize what is truly important and tells us to remember our childhoods and try to be a better parent by being a kid with our kids. Overall, the film displays a heartfelt message with a cast of fun characters from an iconic series and does it very well. Witty, charming and a visually pleasant to watch.

By Sophie Iremonger Cambridge’s inspirational paracyclist Eltje Malzbender has returned from the Para-cycling Road World Championships with more than one reason to celebrate, having made a top placing as well as smashing her goal with an unexpectedly fast time on the trike. Eltje was competing at the event in Italy at the start of August, just two years after receiving a traumatic brain injury which radically changed her life, leaving her in the lowest level of coma which people can recover from, with fractures to the vertebrae in her neck and no expectation from doctors to walk or talk again. But with a positive attitude and keen thirst for life, she worked her way through intensive care and rehabilitation, moving from Te Kuiti to Cambridge where she could better rebuild her strength and independence. It was here the elite cyclist and champion runner got back on the bike – a trike this time – working with her coach Michael Bland and the support of friend John Blake to get back into the game, this time in para-cycling. Eltje’s focus was on the time trial, where she hoped to beat her PB (personal best) average of 23.1kmph – and blew that goal out of the water, pulling off an average of 26.5kmh over the 13.8km course. “I was really pleased … that was unbelievable,” said Eltje. “I think it was absolutely, as my coach Blandy would say, excellent.” Eltje credited her coach Michael and friend John for helping her achieve the success, and said the effects of her brain injury, the pressure of competing on the world

Cambridge para-cyclist Eltje Malzbender beat her personal best at the Para-cycling Road World Championships in Italy, held from August 2-5. stage and the fact that she was on the opposite side of the world didn’t hold her back. “I have to concentrate so much on what I do that I didn’t think of what other people were doing, I just did my thing and it went well,” she said. Having entered the T1 para category meant Eltje could have John cycling behind her, warning her of upcoming corners and changes in course. For some reason she was classed as a T2 athlete in the competition, despite being undoubtedly classified as T1 in New Zealand, and having entered under T1. But although she likely had more setbacks than her T2 competitors, she finished 5th overall in the division, and one can only surmise that her incredibly fast time would have landed a first-place finish in the T1 division. Eltje said the best part of the

experience was not only her fast race time, but the “awesome” support of the New Zealand para-cycling team. “Everybody pitched in and helped us do well, and made us feel comfortable,” she said. “If anything, the whole time in Italy I actually felt less disabled, because I had their support. And when I thanked them, they said ‘that’s just what we do’.” “I’m particularly grateful to my coach Blandy and to John, who have been doing the hard yards with me.” Eltje also wished to sincerely thank the donators and supporters who helped to fund the trip. Cycling New Zealand temporarily covered the cost of the trip, allowing Eltje to continue fundraising upon her return, so the effort to cover costs is still underway.
