To the amazement of everyone this week, the Ministry of Education reversed its decision to “offboard” Year 9 and 10 students from the bus to Cambridge High School. It’s fabulous that common sense has prevailed, and it will take the pressure off families while the structure of education in Cambridge is considered. The town has grown enormously, even in just the last 15 years since I’ve lived here, and all indications are that this is going to continue, so it makes sense to stand back and have a review of how education is managed in the town. I was at a meeting recently where the chair of the community board, Mike Pettit, said he was not in favour of a

second high school because it would “split the town”, and I agree with him. It would seem to make more sense to have middle school catering for Years 7 -9, with Years 10 – 13 moving on to the high school. I’m sure all options will be considered, and it’s good to know the Ministry is at least open to listening to the community. Recently I went out with the Cambridge Community Patrol, and to the relief of everyone (especially me), it was a nice quiet night in town. I didn’t know much about them, so it was interesting to head out and see what it actually involves. I was really impressed by the work that they do, a lot of which is around deterrence, and if it’s something you might be

interested in doing I would urge you to give them a call. You can read all about that on page 10. We’ve also got an update about the renovations underway at the Cambridge Medical Centre, in case you were wondering what’s happening there, as well as the usual raft of locals achieving in sport. And there’s CountryLife this week, too, with plenty of things to interest townies and countryfolk alike. Enjoy!

Ministry backdown on bus decision By Claire Castle

Following a public outcry over the “offboarding” of Years 9 and 10 students catching the bus to Cambridge High School, the Ministry of Education has reversed their decision and put another bus on the Cambridge route to cater for the kids. Late last week, news came through that all Year 9 and 10 Cambridge High School students who live more than 4.7km south of the high school can now catch the bus, despite Cambridge Middle School being the closer school they could enrol at which had made them ineligible for the high school bus. This has come as a relief to families in the area and means that students who had been denied bus transport from the start of the year will now be able to use the bus to school. The organisers of the Cambridge High School Bus Transport 2018 and Beyond Facebook group, Monique Wiles and Natascha Johns, who have spearheaded the recent public campaign, paid tribute to other parents in the background who had been examining legal options, as well as support from the community, including MP Louise Upston who met with Ministry officials last week about the issue. The TV3 current affairs show The Project was also scheduled to come down and talk to the parents about their plight, they said, however the reversal means that won’t be necessary. The change of heart by the Ministry

means that students who were accessing the school bus to the high school instead of the middle school can do so until a decision is made on changing the school year levels, according to Kim Shannon, Head of Education Infrastructure Services for the Ministry of Education. “For Year 9-10 students living in the southern part of Cambridge and surrounds, their closest school is Cambridge Middle School. Cambridge is unusual in that there is an overlap of year levels between the middle school and the high school. Most families choose to leave the middle school after Year 8 in favour of the high school,” Kim said, identifying the unique situation local families are in. “After deciding not to address the year level overlap issue late last year, both school Boards of Trustees (from the middle and high schools) have now approached the Ministry to re-open discussions. That’s why the Ministry will provide extra bus capacity while this review is underway so those students who were accessing the school bus to the high school in favour of the middle school can continue doing so pending a decision on changing the school year levels,” Kim said. This has come as a relief to families living south of the high school, and Monique Wiles and Natascha Johns were on hand on Monday with chocolates for the bus drivers. Cambridge Travel Lines had been caught in the middle, the women

A wave of public pressure has caused the Ministry of Education to rethink their policy on Year 9 and 10s catching the bus to Cambridge High School. explained, adding that they hoped the chocolates would make it to the office, which had received a number of phone calls from concerned parents after the Ministry’s ruling was enforced. Monique said she had been feeling “so wound up” when she received the letter excluding her Year 9 son from the bus last term. Her son was one of six Year 9 students inadvertently allowed on the bus to the high school, while others had been excluded from the start of the year. “It was worth fighting for

and it’s opened the way for more kids to use the bus,” she said. All in all, a great result for the kids and their families. Cambridge residents can have their say on transport in the town through a survey commissioned by the Waipa District Council and Busit – visit the www.waipadc.govt.nz/haveyoursay for more information. The online survey will run until August 6, and after that the research company will be phoning landlines to gather feedback.

More detail on town charter By Viv Posselt

Those keen to have their say around the proposed Cambridge Charter have a few more weeks to gather their thoughts. Members of the Cambridge Growth Strategy Committee, attached to the Cambridge Community Board, last month urged the Board to adopt the Cambridge Town Charter with a view to capturing the town’s essence for inclusion in future developments. Growth Strategy Committee chairman Roger Gordon is calling on members of the public to comment on nine draft charter points before the next meeting of the committee on August 20, suggesting any changes they would like made or any other points added. The nine draft points of the Cambridge Town

Charter are as follows: 1. A vibrant town centre – the heart of Cambridge – with quality historical ambience. 2. Wide, tree-lined streets linked to an extensive network of green spaces which encourage walking and cycling as a means of local travel. 3. A diverse, open and inclusive community that is safe, friendly and accessible. 4. A town green belt offering a recreational reserve for the good of all residents. 5. A diverse and resilient local economy which is innovative and internationally focused and encourages employment. 6. Cambridge as an international hub for highperformance sport and events is recognised and supported.

7. High-performing education supported by quality educational facilities. 8. Our heritage, ecological sites and taonga are respected. 9. Entrances to the town are designed to reflect the vibrancy of Cambridge. Initial discussions with the Community Board saw wide support coming for the concept of the green belt (as in point 4), and Board member Julie Epps signalled support for point 8, saying that Cambridge was unusual in that it has church bells and a chiming clock – commonplace in Europe but rare in New Zealand. Those keen to comment on the proposed charter and add their thoughts should contact either Roger Gordon at rogergordon2017@gmail.com, or Mike Pettit (mike. pettit@waipadc.govt.nz), before August 20.

Changing with the times By Claire Castle

The Cambridge Medical Centre is undergoing renovations, a reflection of the changing needs of the town. The expansion to the centre will allow for the appointment of three additional general practitioners (GPs)

to the practice, business manager Wendy Harris explained. “We were just getting busier and busier,” Wendy said, so the practice jumped at the chance to put in extra rooms when the opportunity arose to purchase the house next door. “The expansion will enable us to use

Cambridge Medical Centre’s directors, Dr Paul Stephens, Dr Clare Hamilton and Dr David Smylie in front of renovations to the practice which will allow for more staff and specialist cover in town. Absent: Dr John Russell.

all of the consult rooms in the main building as consult rooms, not for administration,” Wendy said. But finding staff to fill the position might be tough, she added. “The GP workforce is aging - trying to get GPs to work in any practice is quite a challenge, even in Cambridge, so we are trying a number of avenues to attract GPs to our team.” The expansion will also enable the centre to bring in more specialists to save patients a trip to Hamilton. “We will be partnering with them (the specialists) to bring them here,” she added. Further to the changing needs of the patients, the practice will also be adding two extra late closing times from next month. In addition to the current Wednesday option, they will be adding late nights on Mondays and Thursdays. It’s all part of the changing face of Cambridge, and the Cambridge Medical Centre – which was established 44 years ago by Dr Paul Stephens – is no exception. The practice started in Bryce St, moving to its current location on Alpha St in around 1981, just after Dr Ian McCullough came on board. “There’s been huge growth in the town and huge demand, and we’re very conscious that we’re having difficulty meeting it at the moment,” Paul said. The expansion, being undertaken by Kit Markin Homes, is expected to be finished in October.

New accolade for award winning team

By Viv Posselt Staff at Cambridge’s Turner Road Architecture are in celebration mode again after winning a prestigious and highly competitive category in this year’s Resene Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ) Awards. The practice came away from the Waikato/BOP July 6 function as the Waikato regional winner of the Residential New Home over 300m2 Architectural Design Award. The accolade was for Hilltop House, a contemporary home atop a ridge at the base of Maungakawa, designed to settle harmoniously against a backdrop of native bush. Lee Turner, director at Turner Road Architecture, said the house was built as a spec home by builder Brenton Voorend, and was now owned by a local family. Winning the award has delighted the team, he said, particularly as the Residential 300m2 category was considered the most prestigious of the awards. “From a company perspective, it’s great,” he said. “It means we can show people what we are capable of doing here.” Lee’s wife Kristin, who is marketing manager with the company, said: “It is particularly nice to be noted by your industry peers, people who really know design.” Lee founded Turner Road Architecture

16 years ago. The practice has entered the awards only in the past few years, but has already amassed several winner, finalist, and commended accolades. Their brief for this year’s awardwinning Hilltop House was for an easy-living family dwelling, one that capitalised on the dramatic 360-degree view from the site. It was intended to be simple and contemporary, with a strong sustainability element throughout. The home’s low profile offers wide views from almost every vantage point. The building comprises a three-pod design intersected by a lower pitched glazed link as the entrance hall; it has four bedrooms, two living areas and a media room. Finished in a palette of natural colours, the house is clad in cedar weatherboard and Eurostyle coloursteel. “There are lots of big glass areas that make the most of views over Cambridge and the surrounding area,” said Lee. “The house is a little different for Cambridge … we were really given a very loose rein in terms of its design.” The team’s winning entry now goes forward to be judged against other regional winners vying for the National Award. Another Cambridge winner on the night was Aaron Guerin of LAD Architecture, who won the Residential Alterations and Additions Architectural Design Award.

The award-winning Turner Road Architecture team outside their Hannon Road offices. They are, from left, John Gerrand, Wendy Hilhorst, Kristin Turner, Lee Turner, Phil Vaughan, Chris Wilson and Matt Van Grootel. Speaking at the July 2018 awards function, ADNZ chief executive Astrid Andersen said the Waikato region was always well represented and had “deep levels” of architectural talent. “Year-on-year the competition gets bigger and more challenging,” she said. “There are some incredible designs this year, and the Waikato really held its own. The designers who have won are assets to the region and its architectural landscape.”

Meanwhile, the team at Turner Road Architecture is waiting to hear how they’ve done with their entry into the upcoming Wellington region ADNZ Awards. That is for one of the company’s Elevate Transportable Homes in the Residential under 150m2 category, a three-bedroomed 131m2 ‘long box’ in Lyall Bay. Turner Road Architecture started Elevate four years ago to offer high-end transportable homes to the market.

Sitting astride a ridge in Maungakawa, Hilltop House won in the Residential New Home over 300m2.

Celebrations at library mark 20 years By Sophie Iremonger

The Cambridge Library’s fictional characters came to life last week as locals of all ages dressed as their favourite book characters for the 20th birthday celebration of the library at its current facility. The longest standing member of the library, Faye Jeffries, did the honours of cutting the cake before Rachel Newnes, Cambridge Library supervisor, and Waipa Mayor

Jim Mylchreest spoke to the gathering of several dozen current and former locals. “On July 9th, 1872, the Cambridge library first opened its doors. 146 years later, its services are still going strong,” said Newnes, detailing how the library had gone from using a card catalogue, a DOS matrix printer and dial up internet, to utilizing the benefits of modern technology with e-books, audiobooks and wifi. “… and so much more has

changed. But a lot has stayed the same as well,” she said. “We are still a part of a fantastic community which the team really enjoys being a part of.” “It’s one of those projects that I was involved in early in my career with the council,” said Jim Mylchreest, remembering the library’s move from the Robert Harris site on Victoria St to its current location 20 years ago. “This has really become the hub of Cambridge … The fact that it’s the most used facility that we provide for the community, the proof is in the

pudding really. “I hope all of today’s generations and future generations enjoy the library the same that we all have.” Faye Jeffries said she recalled going to the library as a young girl with her mother, back when it was in the side rooms of the town hall, now the i-SITE premises. That site was funded by Andrew Carnegie, a ScottishAmerican philanthropist who established free libraries across the English-speaking world, including 18 in New Zealand. “I can remember the old

library quite well,” said Faye. “I still read quite a bit … that’s my favourite past time.” Newnes said the library had gone from having 300 books when it first opened on Victoria St, to now having over 150,000 items between the two Waipa libraries. The first library in Cambridge was opened inside the Cambridge Primary School building on July 9th, 1872. It moved from there to the Carnegie library, then over to Victoria St before settling on Wilson St 20 years ago this month.

Keeping the Jewels

After the success of this year’s event, the Harness Jewels has been confirmed for Cambridge again in 2020. The event is held year-about between here and the South Island, and the future of the Cambridge meet was in doubt after the South Island Jewels was moved from Ashburton to the Addington Raceway. This move to a metropolitan area down south raised speculation the North Island event might move to Alexandra Park in Auckland in 2020, however due to the massive success of the event this year Harness Racing New Zealand has given Cambridge the green light for the next meet.

Ticket giveaway: Cantando Choir to perform

The Cantando Choir is bringing Italian opera composer Gioacchino Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle to the stage in Hamilton next month, at Waikato University’s Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts. The 4pm show on Sunday, August 5 will be the second show of the choir’s 30th year, this time presenting more serious works from “the classical sacred repertoire” as musical director Rupert D’Cruze described it. “We will be following Rossini’s original scoring for the work, using as accompaniment a harmonium and two pianos,” he said. Students from the University’s Conservatorium of Music will play a crucial role in the concert, with Felicity Tompkins and Calla Knudson-Hollebon as sopranos, Cecily Shaw and Katie Trigg as mezzo sopranos and Aidan Phillips as baritone. Taylor Wallbank and Emmanuel Fuimaono, tenors,

together with bass Ian Campbell, will share the solo roles. Cantando’s regular accompanist, David Woodcock, will play the harmonium part, and is joined by Sheena Shi and Tamina Beveridge, from the Conservatorium of Music, on the two pianos. Refinancing is a common practice for any of these reasons: • You don’t like the lender you are with. You’ve experienced poor service, problems with staff, or high account fees. • You want to borrow more money but the lender won’t allow it. Perhaps you want to consolidate debt, borrow to purchase a rental property or a vehicle, or put working capital into a business. • You have ‘outgrown’ your existing lender and want to move forward. This is common for self-employed people with a growing business, or for investors with an increasing portfolio. • Your lender has asked you to refinance. You may be in arrears with mortgage repayments or you need to restructure your mortgage. Refinancing can involve costs such as break fees from the existing lender, solicitors’ fees, valuation charges etc, but we can help get cash contributions from your new lender to help offset these costs. At Yes Mortgages, we can outline the costs involved and find the best new lender to fit your current situation from the 25 or so different lenders available. In most instances, our service is FREE to you. Generally the benefits of refinancing outweigh the costs involved but bear in mind: Refinancing your mortgage must benefit and add value to YOU. Let us do the work to find you the best lender for your situation.

Spotlight on the community patrol

Claire Castle went out on the beat with the Cambridge Community Patrol recently, finding out more about the volunteers who are working hard to keep the town safe. I was full of questions before I went out with the Cambridge Community Patrol – Who are they? What do they do? Would I get a taser? – so many questions I couldn’t wait to answer. I finally got my chance one freezing Thursday night recently, turning up at patrol HQ to drive around the streets with a couple of volunteers, looking for anything untoward happening in town. The first thing that surprised me about the community patrol was the level of professionalism involved. There is a sign-written ute with spotlights, high-vis vests and a police radio, and each volunteer undergoes comprehensive training. There’s also a crime report, giving the patrol the heads up on what to look out for (on the night I went out, it was a stolen ute,

sometimes it might be a missing person). After we radioed in to police communications to let them know we were hitting the road, volunteers Neil Bridgland and Allison Vince and I began our circuit around the “nooks and crannies” of Cambridge. That was the other thing that surprised me – how many little back alleyways there are in town. Neil and Allison agreed. They’ve both lived here for many years but said the patrol had taken them to places they didn’t know existed. “We pretty much know all the hidey holes now,” Neil laughed. With one ear on the police radio, we carried on driving around a mostly deserted Cambridge. Being a Thursday night, it was pretty quiet, but that’s usually the case in Cambridge, Neil said. And the response from police

to the patrol, acting as extra eyes and ears on the streets, has been positive, Neil added. The town was locked up tight on the night I went along, which was a far cry from when the patrol first started last year, Neil said. Schools were particularly lax with security back then, however a couple of middle-of-the-night phone calls to the principals asking them to come out and secure buildings have sorted this issue out. Same with businesses – there’s a list of the town’s businesses and contact details of the owners in the ute, so if there is an open window or door somewhere the patrol can let the owner know. Those kind of phone calls are no fun to receive, so things have tightened right up, Neil explained. With Neil driving, Allison had an eagle-eye out for anything untoward, and I was surprised at how sharp they both were. This was partly helped by the free hot drinks provided by the Z Station at Hautapu; a welcome pit-stop from the night’s driving. We also swung past known trouble spots in town (these places were news to me), just to make sure there’s nothing going on – there wasn’t. On the night I went out, we also drove around some retirement villages after reports of late night lurkers making a nuisance of themselves by knocking on windows, with the high-powered spotlight making sure there was nobody hanging around – there wasn’t. Over the course of the evening, we notched up 85km around Cambridge and the surrounding areas, and I came away impressed with the work the community patrol does. While it might seem strange that they can’t actually intervene if they see a crime in Continued next page

Dinner, dancing and the snip for charity With Mystery Creek decked out in a winter wonderland theme, 350 Waikato socialites flocked to the LJ Hooker Cancer Society Ball on Saturday night – raising $75,000 for charity. Hosted by Hamilton’s own Jesse Mulligan, the extravaganza, at Mystery Creek Events Centre, saw guests enjoying a gourmet three-course meal by Kerr & Ladbrook, dancing to live band The Pickups and bidding on a selection of live and silent auction items, including a vasectomy. The chief executive for the Waikato/ Bay of Plenty Cancer Society, Shelley Campbell, said the organisation is humbled by the support from the community.

“The generosity of our guests on Saturday night, as well as every business who sponsored or contributed to making the event a success, will help ensure that no one has to face cancer alone.” “Cancer is something that affects one in three people so most of us can understand the impact that a cancer diagnosis has on friends and family/ whānau.” The live auction attracted fierce bidding with travel prizes popular on the night. Coveted live auction items included two return premium economy flights to Europe with Singapore Airlines, seven nights for 14 people at Italy’s Casa

Ball-goers were transported to a winter wonderland on Saturday night, at the Cancer Society’s annual ball.

Melograno and two nights for two at The Lodge at Cape Kidnappers. The vasectomy, donated by Urology Waikato, raised $725 thanks to the generosity of a ball-goer whose husband might be set to take the snip for charity. All funds raised will remain in the

region and enable the Cancer Society to continue providing practical and emotional support to people with cancer, fund vital cancer research and help New Zealanders to reduce their risk of cancer through education and advocacy.

Spotlight on the community patrol Continued from previous page progress, the deterrent factor of the patrol alone makes it a valuable addition to the town. Plus the fact they are extra eyes and ears for police, working closely with them to keep the town safe. “We’re making things a bit harder for bad people to do naughty things,” Neil said. They’ve also been involved in tracking down a few missing people, such as residents who may have wandered away from rest homes, which has prevented the need for a full-on search and rescue exercise, he added. And Cambridge has got behind them, too, with a level of support that Neil said is not necessarily forthcoming in other towns. It’s entirely run by volunteers with the support of local businesses, and they are doing a good thing I reckon. The Cambridge Community Patrol is one of nearly 200 throughout New Zealand, with 36 trained volunteers on the books. But they are always

looking for more, with the expectation that candidates can do one or two shifts a month. If you’d like to get involved, contact Hannah Glover on 827 6172 or 021 123 6547 or email info@safercambridge. co.nz.

By Sophie Iremonger Cyclists from around the country, including here in Cambridge, gathered at the Avantidrome during the school holidays for a special opportunity to sharpen their skills on the track. The Subway National Track Series commenced its second round at the local velodrome over July 14 and 15, where young riders from Cycling New Zealand’s national performance hubs, and other leading under-17, under-19 and under-23 cyclists, were able to further develop their skills and tactics in bunch racing. Cyclists took part in workshops and competitions throughout the weekend, including racing across Olympic events such as the madison, keirin and individual sprint. “Eighty riders of the highest quality raced hard and long over the three days,” said Cambridge High School’s cycling coach Colin Dixon. “This event was really competitive and a huge success.”

CHS student Patrick Clancy rode exceptionally well in the sprint competition, placing second as the overall best male. Fellow students Mya Anderson and Sammi Ogle gave dominant performances in the endurance competition, with Sammi making several top-five placings. It was a huge step up for 15-year-old Mya, competing against older competitors in a combined age group of under 17, under 19 and under 23 riders. “She rode exceptionally well,” said Dixon. “Nina Sardelich also put up some strong performances against older riders in the Women’s Sprint competition.” Tait Somervell proved to be another great local rider at the event but was forced to withdraw from Sunday’s racing after two crashes on Saturday. St Peter’s cycling coach Tim Carswell said the event played an important role for students Ally Wollaston and Finn Fisher-Black as they prepare for the Junior World Championships in Switzerland

next month. “The high quality of riders and large fields ensured that the competition was fiercely contested,” he said, “which was exactly what was needed to hone the form of the New Zealand Junior team ahead of their departure in just under two weeks’ time.” Both riders enjoyed excellent finishes throughout the competition, with Ally winning the women’s grade overall and Finn placing second in the men’s A grade. “Our young elite riders need opportunities to compete against each other especially in bunch races, something that is almost commonplace for young riders in Europe particularly,” said Jon Andrews, Cycling NZ’s Waikato BOP Performance Hub coach. The first round of the Subway National Track Series was held in Invercargill in early June. The third and final round will return to the Avantidrome next month, over the weekend of August 24 – 26.

Performance boost for motocross rider By Sophie Iremonger

A young motocross rider here in Cambridge is proving success is all about your attitude, as well as having the right tools to get there. Cambridge Primary School student Connor Mellsopp, 10, is churning out fantastic results in the mid-winter motocross series, travelling with his dad Andrew and mum Helina about three weekends a month to compete at events around the North Island. Though he’s often had promising results since starting out nearly three years ago, he’s now keeping a pace with the front of the pack and often making top placings thanks to his own determination and a little help from the

community. “I just wanted to get trophies like my dad,” said Connor, remembering why he decided to take up the sport, “and beat him in trophies!” His dad Andrew used to race in motocross events, hanging up his helmet about a decade ago after collecting about six trophies that he could recall. Connor was proud to say that he’s already beaten his dad more than twofold, now with 13 trophies under his belt. A big boost in his performance came about six months ago, when Te Awamutu’s Gary Nelson of Mad Dog Racing came into the picture. Nelson tuned Connor’s bike to perfectly match his weight and height, and since then he’s been doing even better than ever.

“The suspension is key. Being a good rider is irrelevant if the bike won’t do what you need it to do,” said Nelson. “The speed increase is phenomenal. Basically, they can go from the back of the field to mid-pack instantly, just purely on suspension…They can go much faster and be a lot safer too, that’s the importance of what we’re trying to do.” “I was struggling,” Connor said of his riding before the tune-up. But that’s all changed, now making the top three and top five regularly at motocross meets – a big step up from being unable to ride a bike before he started. “He’s a different kid, different rider, where he’s come from to where he is now,” said Andrew, explaining that he’d originally been told by some that he

wasn’t cut out for motocross. “I’d just say to him, just walk away, let the talking happen on the track. And he’s letting the talking happen on the track,” he said with a smile. “He’s a kid with natural talent, and we just back him and support him. “You can’t do a lot of this unless you get the help… We’d really like to thank all the sponsors that have come on board to help out, Parklands Turf, A1 Electrical Solutions, Gary Nelson at Mad Dog Racing, MXD Racing, Wraptrade and Boyd Motorcycles.” Being his favourite of the six sports he takes part in, Connor said he’d definitely recommend motocross racing to others, adding that he’d made friends around the country. His favourite part, though, is “getting air!” he said.

The Great Boat Race Tauranga vs Cambridge

Andrew Mellsopp, Connor Mellsopp and Gary Nelson say a tweak in bike settings can make all the difference in motocross. Photo – Michael Jeans.

By Eunice Eccles, Cambridge Bridge Club For three weeks at the Cambridge Bridge Club in Fort St, Cambridge players have battled on a Wednesday evening to take the Great Boat Race Trophy, donated by Michael Neels. Twenty-one pairs of Cambridge Bridge Club players faced a similar number of pairs in Tauranga, linked by computers playing identical boards on the same nights. After two weeks the clubs were even, all was left to the final week. To enliven the whole occasion on the

final evening, the players at both clubs arrived appropriately dressed in sailor outfits or university boat race attire, which gave it a nautical appearance. It was too close to call as the night wore on but slowly, with the wind in her sails, Tauranga pulled away from the Cambridge rowers and sneaked ahead, to win the inaugural boat race between Cambridge and Tauranga by a narrow margin. A great time was had by all, and our members are looking forward to next year when they can gain their revenge and win back the trophy.

Reds prepare for thrilling end to season By Josh Easby

clinch their competition and would prefer to do it on the pitch and not through defaults. Hopefully, they’ll get their chance this Saturday when both Cambridge Northern League teams head for Bucklands Beach for a double header at Lloyd Elsmore Park. In the Loaded WaiBOP Championship, Cambridge climbed off the foot of the table with a 2-1 win against local rivals Matamata Swifts. After a scoreless first half, Cambridge went ahead through Peter Buesnel, notching his 18th goal of the season. However, Swifts levelled through Lawrence Clothier. The winner, in the 73rd minute, came from Cambridge’s Yuuki Hiruti with his first goal for the club. Cambridge’s women’s team recorded one of their biggest wins of the season, beating Hamilton Wanderers 7-0 in the Waikato Women’s A League. The victory keeps Cambridge in the race for the title. Goals were scored by Astrid Howarth (2), Chrissy Goodin (2), Gemma Martin, Maddy Burnett and Rachel Hill. Martin’s effort was the pick of the day, perfectly timing a header on the end of a pinpoint cross. The Hill Homes Player of the Day was Howarth who now has 19 goals for the season and is tied with Hill in the race for the women’s Golden Boot. In the men’s Waikato Division D, Cambridge’s D1 side maintained their quest for the divisional title with a 1-1 draw against Northern United Gaffers

at John Kerkhof Park. The visitors looked like causing an upset until D1 defender Steve Barrott struck a 35-metre shot over the ‘keeper in the second half to tie up the match. It was 49-year-old Barrott’s first goal for “a number of years” but keeps Cambridge in the hunt for the title. The D2s beat West Hamilton United 2-0 at John Kerkhof Park to run up their third successive win. The team is improving as the season wears on and their latest win came with goals from Andy Kemp and Liam Storey. After a break for the school holidays, junior football resumes this weekend.

Cambridge face a rollercoaster ride to the end of football’s Northern League season. With only five rounds of competition to go, the Reds are fighting to ensure they don’t get dragged into a battle to avoid relegation. The club is currently eighth in the 12-team Lotto NRFL second division but the bottom pair at season’s end are likely to be relegated. While Cambridge are two competition points clear of the relegation zone now, they face a challenging run-in to the end of the season because: Four of the matches are away, including a long trek to Whangarei for the crucial match against Northland FC. The only home match (on August 4) is against Franklin United, a side that beat Cambridge 8-1 in the first half of the season. Two of the remaining opponents are Takapuna, the runaway league leaders, and Bucklands Beach, currently in second place. Despite the tough schedule, Cambridge can take comfort from

strong recent form that has made the Reds difficult to beat. A spate of draws has kept the team lower on the table than it might have expected. The latest of these was a cruel 1-1 stalemate on Saturday when Cambridge led Albany United after 92 minutes of play, only to concede an equaliser in the dying moments of the match. The Reds had taken the lead on the hour through Dylan Blair, with his seventh goal of the season, and it looked as though Cambridge were going to claim all three points. Goalkeeper Patrick Steele was in terrific form, making several important saves, while young centre back Jack Portegys was outstanding in keeping the Aucklanders at bay. But a late lapse by the Cambridge defence allowed United’s John Curwen to score from a corner. Meanwhile, Cambridge continues to lead the Lotto NRFL second division reserves competition after the side were awarded a 3-0 win by default when Albany were unable to field a team on Saturday, despite having more than 1300 players at the club. Cambridge reserves are keen to

FRIDAY JULY 27, 2018

with Jan Bilton

Gluten-free and gorgeous

Coeliac disease is a lifelong intestinal intolerance to gluten in the diet. Gluten is a protein that is stored in certain starches including wheat, barley, rye and oats. In wheat, the gluten is the stretchy protein that allows bakes to hold their shape once they have risen. With gluten-free baking mixes extra raising agent is required or more eggs are needed in a recipe to assist the bake to rise.

Luckily there are more gluten-free products being added to supermarkets shelves. However, many of them are quite sweet. To combat this, Cambridge cook Irene Fitz-John developed a range of not-so-sweet treats in her home kitchen especially for those watching their sugar intake. Her Scottish father suffered from coeliac disease many years ago when there were few cookies or breads available for him to enjoy.

When her son was diagnosed with the same disease she started to develop some of his favourites including shortbread, flat breads, scroggin munchies and more. Irene’s Skye Blue Kitchens now provides four different bags of dry mixes each of which can be turned into different bakes. They’re available at selected stores and delis and on line at www. skyebluekitchens.co.nz

Mocha & Honey Roasted Peanut Pavs

Scroggin Cookies

The peanuts add a salty sweetness. Special occasion treats.

These cookies are winners. 75g butter or table spread 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 bag Skye Blue Kitchens’ Scroggin Munchies Mix 50g dark chocolate (optional) Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl until well combined. Slowly beat in the egg until well mixed. Stir in the scroggin mix and stir with a large metal spoon. Line a large oven tray with baking paper.

3 egg whites 1 1/4 cups caster sugar 2 teaspoons cornflour 1 teaspoon each: white vinegar, vanilla essence 4 tablespoons boiling water 50g dark chocolate, melted Toffee Shards: 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup boiling water Topping: 2 teaspoons instant coffee granules 1 tablespoon boiling water 1 cup cream 1 tablespoon icing sugar 1/2-3/4 cup honey roasted (salted) peanuts Preheat the oven to 190°C. Line one or two oven trays with baking paper. Lightly mark six, 8cm-diameter circles on the paper. Place the egg whites, caster sugar, cornflour, vinegar, vanilla essence and boiling water in a large bowl in the order given. Beat until stiff

and shiny about 12 minutes. Pile the meringue mixture into the circles. Swirl 1 teaspoon of the melted chocolate onto the top of each mound. Bake for 5 minutes. Turn the oven off and leave for 1 1/2 hours. Meanwhile, make the toffee. Line a tray with baking paper. Place the sugar and water in a large heatproof microwave bowl with a handle. Microwave on high for 2 minutes. Carefully stir the sugar until it is dissolved. Continue cooking for about 5 minutes or until lightly golden. Slowly pour onto the paper-lined tray moving it around so it makes a thin layer. Cool and allow to set. Break into shards. Dissolve the coffee granules in the water. Cool. Whip the cream and icing sugar until thick. Fold in the coffee. Dollop on the top of the cold pavs. Sprinkle with the peanuts and stand shards of toffee on top. Serves 6.

Roll tablespoons (about 30g) of the mix into balls and place on the tray. Flatten with a fork. Chill in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Bake the cookies for 15-20 minutes until lightly coloured. Cool on the tray for 5 minutes before removing them to a wire rack to cool completely. When cold, melt the chocolate and drizzle over the cookies. Refrigerate to set. Store in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer. Makes about 18.

Gluten-Free Scones Because of the lack of gluten these scones do not rise like conventional ones. But topped with raspberry jam and whipped cream they’re delicious. 2 cups gluten-free flour mix sugar into a bowl. Stir to combine. Beat the egg, 1 tablespoon baking powder cream and lemonade together. Pour into the dry pinch salt ingredients and stir to combine. 2 tablespoons caster sugar Turn onto a plastic film-covered chopping 1 large egg board dusted with a little gluten free flour. Pat 150m each: cream, lemonade the dough into a 2cm thick oblong. Cut into Preheat the oven to 200°C. Line a baking tray squares. Place on the baking tray. The tops can be brushed with a little beaten egg for extra with baking paper. Sift the flour, baking powder, salt and caster colour. Bake for 15 minutes, until lightly coloured on top. Best eaten fresh. Makes 9.

Cambridge trainers on top Cambridge trainers-Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman have notched up their 20th black type win in their record breaking domestic season when New York Minute was victorious in the Powerworx Opunake Cup (1400m). The five-year-old was victorious with the front-running performance with jockey Lisa Allpress. New York Minute is now unbeaten in three appearances for the Cambridge team. She was previously trained by IIone Kelly, whose family races the mare. The daughter of Iffraaj worked hard in the initial stages to make it to front and she found another gear to finish strongly in the home straight to beat

Sleeping Beauty, who was carrying fourand-half kilograms less, and stablemate Tomelilla. “She’s hard to catch when she’s rolling along,” Forsman said. New York Minute was a $15,000 weanling purchase out of Little Avondale Stud’s 2013 draft. She has now won more than eight times and won more than $210,000. “Our horse is all heart and dug deep,” Forsman said. Last year the Cambridge duo won the premiership trainers title with 107 wins. Baker and Forsman will retain their title with their current wins standing at 141, a ground-breaking record, but there is still time until the end of the season to add more wins.

Cambridge trainer John Bell had a very successful day at Te Rapa on Saturday. Sentimental stable favourite Athena Baby took out the BGP Battlers Cup (2200m) – the first New Zealand success for the Swiss Ace gelding, following on from winning four times during an eighteen-month stint in Hong Kong. “He was a good performer up in Hong Kong but he had a few niggles so the owners decided to bring him back here and give him plenty of time in the paddock to see if he could get over them,” said Bell. “You don’t win four up there if you’re not a classy customer so we always thought he could deliver here if we could get him right. … He has thrived in his new environment so I did think it was a matter of when and

not if he could get back in the winning groove. “He’s a real favourite of my staff and after they all backed him on Saturday I would think he might be getting some extra special attention this week as well.” Earlier on Saturday classy sprinter Julius confirmed he is on track for a potential Group One assignment when impressing onlookers during an exhibition gallop. Bell has the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) in mind for Julius who won twice at Group Three level during a three-start campaign over the summer. “He’s come up pretty quickly this time in, so we thought we’d better see how he was going with a gallop at Te Rapa,” said Bell.

FRI/SAT: 8.25PM - SUN: 6.15PM -MON/TUE: 8.25PM A worthy sequel; mesmerising. Tension throughout is very high; not an action movie, but more a thriller with some action. This film gives a fairly intense feeling of tension from beginning to end. FBI agent Matt Graver calls on mysterious operative Alejandro Gillick when Mexican drug cartels start to smuggle terrorists across the U.S. border. The war escalates even further when Alejandro kidnaps a top kingpin's daughter to deliberately increase the tensions. When the young girl is seen as collateral damage, the two men will determine her fate as they question everything that they are fighting for.

Great entertainment. This is a wild joyride almost from the word go, with big action sequences. Stars Temuera Morrison. After their small Australian country town is annihilated by an overwhelming airborne attack, a group of civilians evade capture and discover they are now among the last remaining survivors of an extra-terrestrial invasion engulfing the entire planet. As humanity falls under worldwide occupation, they form a home-grown army to fight back against vastly superior enemy forces. On the frontlines of the battle for Earth, they are our last hope. The battle for earth begins with rebellion.

Hautapu hale in home games Submitted by the Hautapu Sports Club

Hautapu’s development and premier teams were rewarded for their efforts over the last round robin play with both teams hosting a semi-final on Saturday. The development hosting Hamilton Marist Bs and our Premiers taking on Otorohanga. Having each won a game in the regular season this was going to be a tough and physical encounter for Hautapu. Premier A Hautapu’s Premier A team opened the scoring with a penalty which was quickly followed by one from Otorohanga. Around the 20th minute Hautapu opened up the Oto’ defence from just outside its own 22, the backs linked well with Sam Tupou crashing in for the first try of the match. Hautapu forwards pushed over for a try in the 32nd minute from a line out drive and just before the break Sam Tupou bagged a double out wide from a grubber kick. Hautapu going into the half time break with a 20-3 lead. Knowing Oto’ would be looking for points early in the second half to get themselves back into the match, the first 10 minutes was going to be key to winning this match. From a charged kick early on Hautapu were onto the attack and after a couple of quick phases Dion Berryman was over in the corner. This try reinforced Hautapu’s resolve as Oto’ continued to fight and

the contact got more bruising as this game went on. It was to be Hautapu’s day in the end running out comfortable winners 46-8 to book a spot in the final with Hamilton Old Boys after they beat Hamilton Marist in the other semifinal. Next week’s final will be played at Waikato Stadium with a late 5.30pm kick off. Supporters’ buses will be running from the Hautapu Club rooms for those wanting to come along and support the team. Premier B It was semi-final time at Memorial Park and the development team took on a determined looking Marist team. Marist opened the scoring with a dominant period of play to go 5 nil up. Hautapu went on the attack immediately gaining a penalty goal. This was followed shortly after with another penalty to Iwan Dawes. For the rest of the first half Hautapu continued to dominate in the forward exchanges resulting in Mike Tomsett bursting over for a converted try, Hautapu going to the break with a 13-5 lead. The second half started with Marist utilising their size and strength to put us under pressure. Hautapu lads held their own and missed two opportunities to score but the opposition were too strong, especially in the last 10 minutes, scoring three unanswered tries to win 26-13. For a very young side the Hautapu

Development team can hold their heads up high, to reach the semi-final was a great achievement, with only three loses this season. They also won the Championship Round Cup. Well done boys.

Again, thanks to the supporters and sponsors and a special mention to our coaches and management team. Come and support our Premier A team in the final next Saturday at the stadium. See you all there.
