Cambridge newsroom update

New to Cambridge? Child starting school? Looking for a change of environment for your child?

Like many other people, I was gutted when the news of journalist Greg Boyed’s death broke last week. I was in two minds about whether to put anything in the paper about it, but then I thought about how suicide is an issue that touches so many people – including people in this community – so I decided to go ahead. It’s a difficult issue, and as the media there are strict rules around reporting on suicide, but I don’t think we would be doing our job if we didn’t talk about it. So let’s talk about it, together. Not just a cursory “you OK?”, but really talk, and listen without judgment. At least that might be one good thing to come out of Greg’s death. There are some

Personally, I have found tremendous benefit in talking to a counsellor, who can provide some clarity when you can’t see the wood for the trees. Give it a go. In brighter news, I also got to go to a mums and sons breakfast at Cambridge High School on Wednesday, and it was great to hear some of the excellent advice that mum and son Lisa and Mitch Jacobson had for the audience of Year 9 boys and their mums. One of the best tips I thought was about how much easier it is to talk with your teenagers on a car trip. A friend of mine used to say that he would learn more about his son

Cambridge High School treated its Year 9 students and their parents to breakfast this week, putting on a dads and daughters event on Tuesday, followed by mums and sons on Wednesday. With around 45 in attendance each morning, one of the organisers, CHS Year 11 dean Rachel Wallis, said the breakfasts were about building connections with the community and celebrating the good work that parents do. Co-organiser Nadia Matson said it was lovely to see the connection between fathers and their daughters at Tuesday’s breakfast. “A lot of dads are on the road early and home late… it was nice for them to spend some easy time together.”

Nadia’s husband, Tabai Matson, led a question and answer session at the mums and sons morning, with special guests Lisa and Mitch Jacobson. Mitch, a Cambridge High graduate who plays rugby for Waikato, had some good advice for the young men in the room: “Don’t be too hard on your mum” he told them, urging them to help out where they can and maybe pay her a compliment every now and then. While young men are not notoriously talkative, Lisa said that it is important to “leave the door open for them” to talk when they need to. There are also some great conversations to be had in the car, she said, which can be easier because no eye contact is required. The breakfast was supported by Pony, Loulous and Mystery Creek Wines, who

Sporting stars added to walk Five outstanding sportspeople – and a horse – will be publicly recognised later this year with inclusion in Cambridge’s prestigous Walks of Fame. Rowers Eric Murray and Hamish Bond, BMX star Sarah Walker, squash champion Joelle King and outstanding sportsman Doug Mienie will have bronze plaques added to the footpath in Duke St, Cambridge. They will join 35 other plaques already there, recognising Cambridge’s internationally lauded sports stars in codes ranging from ploughing to polo. The last inductee was Amigene Metcalfe in 2014, recognised for her achievements in touch and netball. At the same time, the late trotter Sovereignty will be recognised with his own mosaic on the Cambridge Equine Walk Hall of Fame. Sovereignty will join other horses including broodmare Eight Carat, double Olympic equestrian champion Charisma and sire Sir Tristram. Waipa Mayor Jim Mylchreest said the

district was “awash” with outstanding sportspeople who had achieved remarkable things internationally. “For a small district, we punch well above our weight in terms of international sporting prowess . If any district has earned the label Home of Champions, it is Waipa,” he said. “It’s fantastic to know you can walk down the street here and find yourself next to Olympic gold medallists and world champions across a huge range of codes. That’s something really special for this community and particularly fantastic for our young people who are are surrounded by role models and can see what can be achieved if you put the work in.” The mayor also paid tribute to Waipa’s equine industry and all those who work in it, noting Waipa was globally recognised for producing world-class thoroughbred horses. A civic function for inductees, friends and family will be held later this year at the same time the plaques and new mosaic are installed.

Doug Mienie has officially represented New Zealand in three sports; judo, bodybuilding ad powerlifting. He placed second in freestyle wrestling in 1980 and also won two gold medals for swimming at the Masters’ Games in 2009.

Water meter relief for some By Claire Castle

Sovereignty (Champion Standardbred Trotter). Owned by Charlie Hunter (ONZM) and Annette Hunter and trained by Sean McCaffrey. Wins include the Group 1 Great Northern Trotting Derby, the Group 1 NZ Sires Stakes ThreeYear-Old Trotters Championship Final and the Harness Jewels Three-Year-Old Ruby Trot in Cambridge. Voted 2007/08 Three-Year-Old Trotter of the Year. Runner-up in the Group 1 Glenferrie Farms Australia/NZ Challenge in Sydney and third in the Group 1 Inter-Dominion Trotters Grand Final in Melbourne. Won 28 times with 34 placings and $780,386 in stakes. Retired from racing in April 2014, died in September 2014 at age 10.

Following public consultation, Waipa District Councillors voted unanimously on Tuesday to give some shared water meter property owners a reprieve, allowing them to pay a capped rate for water. Those eligible for a capped rate will come from residences where, for example, a single person is sharing a water meter with a high-using family. Although 84 per cent of cross-leased properties are better off under the water meter system – paying less than the $405.60 a year that was previously charged in the rates – council accepts that some are disadvantaged by sharing a meter with others. Council took the draft Water Remission policy for Complex Properties out to the community for feedback on a possible remission, at the same time seeking public opinion on the possibility of council lending funds to property owners to help them pay for private plumbing to separate their meter. As part of this process, every complex property owner – around 1,100 – was sent information

and invited to comment, with feedback closing at the end of July. There were 68 responses – just over six per cent of those approached - with 47 people in favour of a remission, ten not in support of one and 11 with no indicated response (nine of which being off-topic). At Tuesday’s council meeting, councillor Susan O’Regan suggested that due to the low response rate from the affected property owners, it could be assumed that the majority of those on shared water meters are quite comfortable with the proposition. Mayor Jim Mylchreest agreed, saying that tidying up the issues around the shared water meters seemed to be a “relatively easy” process. Comments to the council in support of the remission policy included one respondent, who wrote: “It seems like a very reasonable solution to what is a challenging problem.” Others were less than impressed, with one resident writing: “We could still end up paying more than our fair share. For Pete’s sake, just do the right thing – you want to make money off residents for a resource they use, you

pay for the means to do so fairly.” The report recommended an additional clause in the Remission policy, to address any situation where there is “serious inequality” of charging for ratepayers on a property with a complex meter. It suggested an addition that: “at council’s absolute discretion, and on a case-by-case basis, council staff can work with owners of properties with a complex water meter to get an equitable distribution of costs. This could include making reasonable inquiries about water usage as a basis for adjusting the allocations that would otherwise result from the application of this policy.” Having encouraged complex property owners to install their own separate water connections, the report also asked whether council should lend funds to property owners to allow them to pay for any changes required to private plumbing up to $5,000. The loan would incur interest at lowerthan-normal lending rates, with the amount of interest and duration of any loans to be worked through as part of next year’s draft annual plan.

We need to talk about it By Claire Castle

In the wake of the death of journalist Greg Boyed last week, figures released by the chief coroner have revealed that 668 people were reported to have died by suicide in the past year. This figure is the highest since provisional statistics were first recorded ten years ago. Since those provisional figures have been collected, New Zealand has officially lost 6,204 people to suicide. And men make up the clear majority of that number, with 4,566 men taking their own lives in the past decade, compared with 1,638 women. It’s an alarming figure, and much higher than the more publicised road toll,

which showed that in 2017 there were 380 deaths on our country’s roads. Local counsellor Sandy Wesford said that modern life is placing enormous pressure on people, particularly high achievers. “Life is getting messy and people are experiencing emotional overwhelm and powerlessness,” she said, adding that “the ‘harden up’ discourse is not helping.” “There’s a conflict of message, where on one hand we are telling people to talk about it, with initiatives such as support groups for farmers and John Kirwan’s work, but on the other hand we’re telling them to ‘take a concrete pill’ and get over it.”

People need to remember that feelings of utter despair and believing that the world would be better off without them will not last forever: “It is just a moment in time and it will pass,” Sandy said. Talking with a counsellor can help people to gain perspective on their issues and identify potential ‘blindspots’ in their thinking, she added. “People can feel that there aren’t any options…going to talk to an objective person who isn’t going to judge you for feeling what you’re feeling can really help.” As part of her work with Lifeskills, Sandy spoke with comedian turned mental health campaigner Mike King after his I am Hope tour, which visited Cambridge Middle School in April. As a result of his presentation, a couple of kids asked for help and were referred to Lifeskills for free counselling. Sandy said she and Mike “chewed the fat” for a good 40 minutes, discussing the inner critic we all have. In some cases, this internal critic can turn into a bully, leading to a state of anxiety and torment, leading people to genuinely believe that the world really would be better off without them.

“The way forward is about more understanding about how to manage emotions… understanding when you feel them and understanding how

CAMBRIDGE NEWS | 5

to cope with them. Talking to someone can give you these skills going forward,” Sandy concluded. “Just remember it will pass.”

Mental health campaigner Mike King, pictured with daughter Charlie, was in Cambridge in April as part of his I Am Hope tour of the country’s intermediate and middle schools. He says society needs to change its attitude about mental health and how we talk about it.

Kaipaki reaches roll milestone By Claire Castle

Kaipaki School has celebrated reaching 100 students, the first time in the school’s 142-year history the roll has hit triple figures. In honour of the occasion, students put on a presentation with the theme of 100, including one group which sang and original song - A Hundred Dreams - to the tune of A Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman. Then it was time to cut the celebration cake, with the youngest student at the school, Beatrix Gibb and one of the oldest, Devin Bartlett doing the honours. The 100th student, Shakarna Nelson, was caught by surprise, standing up in front of the school to receive a certificate to commemorate her place in the school’s history.

year have risen from 927 complaints to 1,358. Complaints made in the latest quarter of April to June are at a 20-year record high for the online safety organisation, with complaints reaching the highest level since it began operating. Between April and June 2018 Netsafe received 706 personal harm complaints – a 50 per cent increase from the same quarter in 2017. Despite complaints being at an all-time high, Netsafe CEO Martin Cocker says that he isn’t surprised by the figures. “Netsafe’s research shows that almost a third of Kiwi adults have experienced unwanted digital communications in the last year, and nearly one in ten have experienced a negative impact on their daily activities. The number of complaints made to Netsafe has been steadily increasing to reflect this,” he said. Online scam and fraud losses are also at an alltime high for the online safety organisation this year. Reported losses to scams and fraud between January and June 2018 have already surpassed total reported losses in 2017 by $8.5M. Losses reported to Netsafe in 2017 totalled $10.1M and currently sit at $18.6M for the first half of 2018. Of scam and fraud reports to Netsafe between April and June 2018, 11 per cent involved financial loss. Sergeant Lance Adams from Cambridge Police said that police take online offending seriously, and action has been taken under the Harmful Digital Communications Act against people committing these types of offences in the Waipa area. “I would encourage anyone who finds themselves subject to this type of behaviour to contact their local police station for advice and to make a report,” he concluded.

Quickfire News Shipping container wanted Local dog rescue charity Pound Hounds Rescue is on the hunt for a weathertight shipping container to store donated food, blankets, bedding and dog coats for their ‘poundies’ and needy canines in the community. Rehoming dogs for the Waipa District Council’s pounds in Cambridge and Kihikihi, Pound Hounds takes unwanted pooches from the pound (and further afield as the word spreads), moving them into foster homes before they find their ‘forever home’. Organisers Rachel Haakma and Helen McLean work to make sure the right dog is matched with the right people, and Rachel said the shipping container will allow them to store food, bedding, toys and “all manner of other things” for their ‘poundies’ and, when they are able, other dogs in the community that need help. They also need somewhere to store donations for their monster garage sale in October. If anyone has a spare shipping container they would like to donate to Pound Hounds, please contact them at poundhoundsrescue.co.nz or through their Facebook page – Pound Hounds Rescue New Zealand.

Glass owls mark St Peter’s school awards By Viv Posselt

The owl is an integral part of St Peter’s Cambridge. It forms the central image in the school crest and logo, and Owl Farm is a well-recognised demonstration dairy farm that supports the school’s agricultural and horticulture programmes. Owls also signify wisdom, which is why three ‘golden owls’ were selected for the inaugural St Peter’s School Distinguished Alumni Awards, to be presented at the school on Saturday, September 8. They were designed and made by award-winning ‘sculptural glassmaker’ Di Tocker, whose extensive pedigree with glass has seen her exhibit widely across New Zealand and amass numerous awards along the way. It is in her home studio in Cambridge that she crafted the ‘golden owls’ after being invited six months ago to submit a design that reflected the school. “I was thrilled to be asked to design and produce the ‘golden owls’ for the St Peter’s School awards,” she said. “I think the most difficult part of the whole process was that initial design phase; I had to work out how I was going to approach the

owl in such a way as to make a piece of art rather than just a figurine. “I also felt it was important for the design to be contemporary. When I design glass pieces for awards I think about many aspects, such as who will receive the award, where will it be displayed and how can this art-piece reflect the organisation, and how long the design needs to remain relevant. Then you also have to make sure it is a manageable size and weight to be presented on stage.” Di’s first drawing was approved, so she set about making the sculptures using the blackwood casting crystal she imports from Australia. She made the initial carving in wax form – that too, was given the tick by St Peter’s – and then continued the intricate and demanding production process which resulted in the three 2.8kg gold and green sculptures now ready to be boxed. “I chose a green/grey for the base at the bottom because the school motto – structa saxo – means set in stone, or built on a rock, so I wanted the bottom to take on the appearance of stone.” Di studied her craft at Melbourne’s RMIT University,

Much of her early work was small figures … later, she placed figures on steps, with suitcases, or on boxes, and also did a series of glass paper-dolls. More recently there has been the navigator series – curves suggestive of boats and worlds – and rooms, where figures are encased in glass. “I like to work in series – it

Bands rock in Bandquest

By Sophie Iremonger

Cambridge Middle School’s young rockers and poppers put their musical talent to the fore at the Waikato Bandquest competition this week, performing to a huge crowd at the Clarence St Theatre. The talented musicians, performing as rock group Blended and pop group Crowded, were two of 14 bands competing at the competition on Tuesday night, which is the primary and middle school equivalent of Rockquest. The event attracted record entries this year, forcing the 24 bands to be split over two nights of competition. Ultimately

it was Southwell School’s Black Badger that took the win on Tuesday night, but the CMS students said they were winners in their own right after having a heap of fun at the competition. “We didn’t get any placings, but overall it was really fun, and we enjoyed it,” said Ben Bonetti, vocalist for Crowded. It was Crowded’s first time performing in front of an audience besides the school assembly, and for keyboardist Elsa Jolley it was somewhat of an unexpected performance after being roped in at the last minute. “It was nerve-wracking, but it was really fun,”

she said, having joined the group a week before the performance. “I thought they did fantastically,” said Tracey Andrews, head of performing arts at Cambridge Middle School. “They were certainly on par with all the other schools that were there.” It was the second public performance for Blended, having competed in Bandslam at Activate Church a month earlier. “We were way more confident this time,” said drummer Alex Dixon, adding that a highlight for the band was hearing the crowd clap along to their performance.

Open weekend Blended, which played Dark Necessities by Red Hot Chilli Peppers, included Manaia Elliott (bass), Ruby Oldershaw (guitar), Meeka Truscott (vocals), Isla Te Weehi (keyboard), Alex Dixon (drums).

Gaslight show starts tomorrow

The Gaslight Theatre’s next show Domestic Bliss kicks off with its first two shows this weekend. Directed by Hamiltonian and Gaslight regular Tracey Barlow, the show features three Waikato women in a play written by Kiwi playwright Christina Stachurski – starring Hamilton actors Janine Swainson, Rye Inglis and Cambridge local Jo Wadsley. It looks at the lives of three New Zealand women living in different time periods: Grace, a 1950s housewife with a secret; Jackie, a feisty 1970s solo mum; and Sarah, a modern businesswoman and mother of two. Though living in different decades, they all resided at 47 Portia St, sharing the same kitchen, and inspiring the question; what would they say to each other if they could meet? Their stories are told through a series of monologues – the audience being the “guest” in their lives – until one afternoon, where the lives of the three women cross paths, bringing Grace, Jackie and Sarah together, allowing each woman to influence and change the lives of the other. Inspired by tracks worn into the lino of a kitchen in an old abandoned house, author Christina Stachurski researched women and their attitudes to house and home, and how these have changed over three generations, and how things today might even be coming to full circle. “Its 2018 and we are still fighting the same fight from 100 years ago. We are still pushing for equality – pay, opportunity, acceptance. Its more balanced, but we still have a way to go,” said director Tracey Barlow. The opening show of Domestic Bliss kicks off this Saturday, September 1, running again on Sunday afternoon and continuing shows through to September 15. Tickets are available from Paper Plus Cambridge or online at www.eventfinda.co.nz. Check out next week’s issue for a review of the show.

Rob Waddell rounds up the keys to success By Sophie Iremonger

New Zealand rowing champion Rob Waddell payed a visit to St Peter’s School’s Year 9 and 10 students last week, giving them a few lessons on life, sport and the right attitude. He explained to the students that he had started out in similar shoes as them – not exactly the greatest athlete in school – sharing a story about how his boat took on water at a school rowing regatta. “To think if someone had said back then, hey, in eight years’ time you’ll be an Olympic champion, that would have brought the house down, no one would ever have believed it, and least of all me,” he said with a smile. “I never saw all the way to that point, what I did see though was the next step up in the ladder.” One point he repeated to the students was rather simple, “We are what we do repeatedly. Whether you think you can achieve something or you can’t, you’re right, because that’s what goes into your mind every single day, and that’s what you’ll produce when it matters.” Despite almost two decades passing by since his gold-medal win at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, Rob’s inspiring talk showed he still has his champion mindset and applies it in all areas of life. Now looking back on how high-performance sport has changed since his rowing peak, he said one of the biggest differences was the stigma surrounding mental health. “I guess an observation I’d make now, about how far it’s come, is sports psychology,” he said. “When I first became part of an Olympic team, it was something where, if you did it there was perceived

Now it’s probably much more the normal, if you’re not doing it you’re not doing everything you should be doing to help the team or to help your performance.” Rob highlighted some of his own nuggets of wisdom when it comes to a champion mindset, including the importance of a positive mindset. “Keeping a positive mindset is off the water too, or off the field of play,” he said. “Everyone has doubt at certain times, it’s what you do with it that’s important. “People say winning a rowing race is about being tough, it’s not, winning a rowing race is about being clever, it’s about forcing your mind to think the right things under pressure.”

Careers expo a winner for thoroughbred racing By Kay Hogan, NZTR training advisor Cambridge Raceway hosted over 35 different sites at the recent Careers Expo, showcasing opportunities for training and careers in a wide variety of industries. One of the more unusual activities on offer was the chance to ride a mechanical horse which was on display at the New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing site. Jockey Anna Jones ably demonstrated the skills and techniques needed to successfully ride a racehorse and this motivated several students and some notso-young to queue up and have a go. Local equine businesses supplied prizes for the lucky draw. The Cambridge Equine Vets jacket went to Ethan Loder, and Jorja Gordon won the Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre umbrella – both of whom attend Cambridge High School. Catriona Lamb (Te Awamutu College) won drenches and the Dunstan feed dipper, while Jess Thomas of Cambridge Middle School won the pack of equine products from SVS veterinary supplies. Held every two years, the Careers Expo was jointly organised by Cambridge High School and St Peter’s. This year it attracted 550 visitors.

Dancers on top at regionals Eighty seven St Peter’s dance students competed in the DanceNZ Made regional competition at Clarence St Theatre earlier this month, taking out the ‘Rise Up’ dance award – the top award of the evening as the overall regional champions. The group of dancers – Rhiannon Thomas, Georgia Burkhart, Samara Mockford and Stella Soar – earned the big award with a dance choreographed by Rhiannon, and qualified for the national competition. Leading up to the big night, students participated in a day of workshops and competed in the evening – in the form of nine troupes, two studentchoreographed pieces and 11 soloists, with St Peter’s students making fifteen top placings.

Farr’s marimba concerto to debut The world premiere of prestigious New Zealand composer Gareth Farr’s marimba concerto will take place in Hamilton in four weeks’ time, performed by Opus Orchestra and guest musician Yoshiko Tsuruta. The brilliant Tsuruta will operate four mallets across 69 wooden bars to produce the mesmerising sound of the marimba in this new and captivating concerto, written by New Zealand’s multi-award-winning composer. Gareth Farr, ONZM, was the youngest ever composer to be appointed composer-in-residence by Chamber Music New Zealand in 1993 at age 25. Helen

Clark described him as “the most amazingly prolific and talented composer”, rightly so after he wrote works for the opening of Te Papa, the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, and the opening ceremony of the 2011 Rugby World Cup, and numerous works for dance, theatre, television and film. “I am very excited to play this concerto by Gareth Farr, I’ve always enjoyed both playing and listening to his music,” said Tsuruta. “The work demands immediate attention with its rhythmic energy, and there will be plenty of visual intrigue as the music has been specifically written for the extended range of my marimba.” Tsuruta began learning the marimba in Japan at age nine. She relocated to New Zealand in 2004, and completed her Master’s Degree at the Anton

Bruckner Privatuniversität in Linz, Austria, in 2014. The show will also be will be part of Opus Orchestra’s final concert series for 2018, ‘Ahead of the Game’. The world-premiere performance takes place on Friday, September 28, 7.30pm at Hamilton’s Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts, located on the Waikato University campus, 3105 Knighton Rd. Tickets are priced from $10, available at www. orchestras.org.nz or at the door. Entry for school-aged children is free. To win a double pass to the show, just email your full name and contact phone number to sophie@cambridgenews.nz with the subject line “Opus”. Guest speaker entertains support group By Claire Castle

Flying mallets and wooden bars by way of Yoshiko Tsuruta will feature in the world-premiere of NZ composer Gareth Farr’s new marimba concerto.

The Cambridge Blind and Vision-impaired Support Group had a special guest speaker recently, with Dr Fred Simpson from the Leamington Medical Centre talking about his life and sharing some of his poetry. Dr Simpson told of his journey from a childhood growing up in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), and his forays into labouring and selling pots and pans to American troops in Germany. Having established he was neither a born labourer nor salesperson, he eventually found his way to medicine. Moving to New Zealand 31 years ago, Dr Simpson spent 25 years as a GP in

Tokoroa, commuting there from Cambridge for 21 of those years. Not only a doctor, he is currently writing his second novel and treated the assembled group to a couple of poetry readings. The Cambridge Blind and Visionimpaired Support Group has been going for 43 years, offering advice and support to those in the Cambridge community. They meet at the Cambridge Baptist Church at 58 Queen St on the third Thursday of the month, with get-togethers alternating with outings. Entry is free. Phone Sue on 07 827 5844 or Karen on 07 827 3925 for more information. Transport to the meetings may be available for those in need.

Champion System have all come on board to sponsor the teams, along with main sponsor GD Pringle Building. “It’s is a nice step forward for us as a team this year and something we have been working on the last few seasons and to be able to do it with local sponsors who I feel understand what we are trying to achieve is fantastic” Blair Taylor, owner of Spoken Cycles, said. “My goal from all this was to always try and develop young riders and I think we’ve done that that really well. We’ve got two young of our guys who have ridden for our team over the past two years off to junior worlds in September out of only 3 riders in the New Zealand U19 team. “I feel it shows that riding with experienced guys that the learning curve is greater, and they pick up a few tricks here and there.” The big news for the day was that the Category one team has gained an invitation to both of New Zealand’s UCI road race events, at the New Zealand Cycle Classic, which next year will be run out of the Waikato area; and the Gravel & Tar Classic in the Manawatu. GD Pringle Building/ Spoken will be one of only five New Zealand outfits at the 2019 New Zealand Cycle Classic; running from January 23 – 27 next year. “We’re really proud and excited to get a start, we have been chasing this for a while and the timing couldn’t be better,” Blair said. Featuring alongside the team will be Sam Cook who was selected for the New Zealand Junior team for the UCI World Road Championships in Austria, and World Championship and Commonwealth Games mountain bike winner Sam Gaze who was also crowned Criterium National champion in Takapuna on the road.

St Peter’s First XV had a victory over local rivals Cambridge High School last Wednesday, winning 55-7 in trying conditions. The mid-week game meant crowd support was encouraging from both schools. St Peter’s were well-led by co-captains Simon Parker and PJ Latu, who both had very strong games with the ball in hand. They were ably-supported by key players Andrew Viane, Lini Ekuasi and Cam Roigard. St Peter’s forwards and ball players were too big and strong for the spirited Cambidge High defence, running in a total of nine well- constructed tries. The victory means St Peter’s now progress as the Chiefs’ Co-Ed finalist, facing Manurewa in the final this Saturday, 12pm at St Peter’s. Women edged out in thrilling cup final By Josh Easby

Cambridge women’s football team have

capped a successful season by finishing second in both their cup and league competitions.

Starting the year with a young and inexperienced squad, the club’s women’s team was edged out of the weekend’s final of the Waikato Women’s Cup, losing 3-2 to West Hamilton United in extra time. Playing at John Kerkhof Park, the Hamilton side took the early initiative and a 2-0 lead into the interval. But Cambridge came back strongly in the second spell, scoring goals through Caitlyn Varcoe and Rachel Hill to lock the match up 2-2 at the end of ordinary time. For Hill, it was her 23rd goal of the season, taking her level with teammate Astrid Howarth in the race for the women’s Golden Boot. The additional period was evenly balanced but West Hamilton held their nerve and grabbed a late winner to take the trophy. Coach Andrew Taylor said he was proud of his team for the character of their performance and everyone contributed

well, especially Chrissy Goodin, Howarth and Varcoe. The Hill Homes Player of the Day was veteran goalkeeper and captain Jen Hull, playing her last home of her career before planning to retire after more than 120 appearances for the side. “The game could have gone either way, but the bounce of the ball evaded us,” Taylor said after the match. Chance to see masters at work

By Claire Castle

The Avantidrome has been a hive of activity on Sundays recently, with masters cyclists preparing for next month’s Cambridge Drome Masters. Around 70 cyclists have entered so far, with 30 from Cambridge and the rest from further afield. One of the organisers, Olivia Spaans, said there are competitors coming from as far away as Christchurch for the two-day event at the Avantidrome on September 8 and 9. Olivia said the event was designed for cyclists who might feel daunted by age group competitions. “The age group championships can be quite serious, we just want to take some of the pressure off and given them (the over 35-year-old riders) a taste of what racing is like,” she said. The Cambridge Drome Masters will feature the North Island Sprint Cup and the North Island Endurance Cup and will include four sprint events and four endurance events, with points accumulated over the weekend from race results. The event will have a “carnival” atmosphere, with commentary by Del Woodford, who Olivia said always knows how to get the crowd going. In addition to that, there will be spot prizes for spectators and plenty of cycling action over the weekend event. Olivia said she hopes the community will take the opportunity to come along and see what the Avantidrome is all about, enjoying a fun day out in the process. Another organiser,

cyclist Samantha Fairweather, said the Cambridge Drome Masters promises to be a good event, catering for a large section of the cycling community. “Often, we’re (over 35s) a forgotten about cohort, but we’re one of the largest groups who support the track,” she said. Fellow cyclist Julie Graddon, who has been riding at the velodrome for two years, said the organisers have done a great job in setting up the event: “It takes some doing”.

The Cambridge Drome Masters is on Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9. The Saturday morning session will run from 10am – 4pm, with the evening session running from 6pm – 10pm. On Sunday, the morning session will run from 10am – noon, with the afternoon session going from 1pm4pm. Entry is free for spectators, with spot prizes and food available from the onsite café and upstairs kiosk.

Cyclists have been spending their Sunday afternoons preparing for the Cambridge Drome Masters, a change for the over 35s to strut their stuff on the Avantidrome track.

New lacrosse team for Cambridge

By Sophie Iremonger

A new sports team is being planned for Cambridge, and organisers are encouraging interested locals to come along to a muster on September 15 to check it out. With lacrosse becoming an increasingly popular sport around the region, Waikato men’s lacrosse coach Anthony Warrington, soonto-be team manager Doug Hearmon and Jason Cameron at the Leamington Rugby Sports Club are working to put together a men’s lacrosse team to compete in fixtures around the region. Potential players don’t necessarily have to have experience playing lacrosse, but rugby skills may come in handy. The muster will provide the chance to learn the game and develop the skills required, or simply give

people the chance to give it a go and see what it’s all about. With the Carlyle St sports grounds set to host the 2018 Lacrosse Nationals for under 18 players, Leamington Rugby Sports Club Lacrosse has been set up to grow the sport in Cambridge and drive

interest towards the big event. Members of the local U18 lacrosse team, along with Anthony and Doug, will be present at the muster to help teach the game and speak with potential new team members. There is no age limit for the new team, as long as

players show ability and a keen attitude, anyone from 15 years old and over can get involved. To find out more, email nzhearmons@hotmail.com or simply show up to the muster at 2pm on Saturday, September 15 at the Leamington Rugby Sports Club grounds.

From left, manager of the soon-to-be Leamington lacrosse team Doug Hearmon, lacrosse players Alistair Hearmon, Damian Leach, Finlay Pirie and James Burns, and head coach Anthony Warrington will be present at the September 15 muster to help locals get into the game.

Fifth-place finish in Bowers Cup By Sophie Iremonger

The final round-robin week of the Bowers Cup under-45kg rugby tournament over the weekend saw Cambridge face off against Hamilton Blue, who were sitting two points ahead. A win would see Cambridge in a playoff for 5th and 6th against Morrinsville. Cambridge started strongly with James Maguire finishing off some great midfield work by Jonte Redman and Ryan Harvey. Ryan slotted the conversion. Baxter Smith had a strong game and pushed through a ruck to score, but soon the Hamilton team pushed back and scored close to the posts, converted 12-7. Not to be outdone, Jonte Redman extended Cambridge’s lead and finished off the first half scoring an impressive long-range try, 17-7. The second half was all Cambridge, with a second try each for Jonte and Baxter and a try to Andrew Bassam. Final score 32-7.

Looking to redress their previous loss against the team, Cambridge were fired up for their playoff against Morrinsville. An early try by James Maguire from broken play woke Morrinsville up and the defence became much harder to breach. Cambridge were penalised heavily for offside and infringements at the ruck, but soon Justice Lummis scored Cambridge’s second try, converted by Ryan to make the halftime score 12-5. In the second half Morrinsville pinned Cambridge in their own half for long periods. Solid defence and a strong character kept them scoreless, but then Tipene Keenan made a try under the posts and Ryan converted for a fantastic end to the tournament with a 19-5 win. It meant the Cambridge team finished up fifth overall out of the nine Bowers Cup teams. “Fifth place overall was a fair reflection of how we had performed,” said team coach Dave Peters. “The squad contained a lot of year seven players and a year six player so there

should be a good core to carry into next year’s tournament.” The team’s coaches and managers wished to thank the generous sponsors who provided funds, uniforms and equipment for the team. They include

Redman Hire, Brinkworth Associates, Mitre 10 Mega Cambridge, Subway Cambridge, Mr Walter Barbershop, and GD Pringle Builders. “Also, thanks to Cambridge News for their fantastic support,” said Dave.

Cambridge High School pulled off a lacrosse victory against Morrinsville on Sunday, winning the match 7-4. Despite being a few players short due to injury, the boys still showed their opponents why Cambridge is known as the town of champions, notching two scores under their belt within the first third of the game, whilst Morrinsville struggled to adjust to against Cambridge’s strong dodging players. They soon caught up though, scoring two goals of their own. The second third the game looked quite even, with Morrinsville’s Ricky Park and Blair Johnson making some tenacious runs through Cambridge’s defence. But Cambridge managed to jump ahead with a three-point lead in the final third of the game, finishing up with a 7-4 victory. Finlay Pirie was named player of the day after showing “massive improvements” in his play recently, “as he has become more confident in his ability,” said coach Anthony Warrington. “Finlay is one of the starting attackmen for our Waikato Under 18s team and has improved by leaps and bounds this season. “It was good to see him putting a whole lot of new skills he has been learning to use against Morrinsville.” This Sunday Cambridge will play Hamilton Boys High School, 4pm at the Hamilton Inline Hockey Centre, Old Farm Rd – the last of the round-robin games before the playoffs take place on September 9. Cambridge mare Horse of the Year By Candice Gollan

Cambridge-trained Bonneval defended her title when she took out top honours at the New Zealand Thoroughbred Horse of the Year awards in Auckland on Sunday. The daughter of Makfi took home the Horse of the Year crown for the second year in a row. This is the fifth win for Trainer of the Year Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman. The training duo prepared the 2014 winner Dundeel, Mongolian Khan which took out the 2015 and 2016 titles and now Bonneval. Bonneval, who is

preparing for her fiveyear-old season, only had four starts in her four-yearold campaign but was the top Kiwi performer at the Melbourne Spring Carnival. She won the Group Two Feehan Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley freshup and then beat Group One winners Hartnell and Gailo Chop in the Group One Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield. The Horse of the Year award was introduced in 1971 and Bonneval is just the eighth horse to have won the honours more than once. The other multiple winners have

been Sunline (who won it four times), Show Gate, Rough Habit, Xcellent, Seachange, Mufhasa and Mongolian Khan. Bonneval was the clear favourite when she received almost twothirds of the votes for Horse of the Year. She topped the poll with 40 votes, 25 more than Avantage. She also beat out Kawi, NZ Oaks winner Savvy Coup and New Zealand Derby winner and stablemate Vin De Dance. She also won the Champion middle distance performer for the 2017-18 season. The consistent mare was the only New Zealand-trained horse to win a Group One race in Australia in the season just finished. She was a $150,000 yearling buy for owners Terry Jarvis, Alastair Lawrence and John Rattray and has earned $1.68 million in stakes, from just 12 starts. Bonneval is scheduled to return to Melbourne this spring.

Trampers trek at Rotorua By Anne Galbraith, Cambridge Tramping Club Flick, once a Cambridge Tramping Club member, always has an interesting tramp arranged for us somewhere in the Rotorua area. Recently she guided us to Tikitapu (Blue Lake) situated along the Tarawera Rd. We followed the track through regenerating bush which had been completely smothered by ash from the nearby Tarawera eruption in 1886. Before long we glimpsed Rotokakahi (Green Lake) sparkling in the distance. Water activities are permitted on Tikitapu but not on Rotokakahi, because it is privately owned by local Iwi and considered tapu. Nineteen people enjoyed morning tea seated on a trimmed Douglas fir tree log

A short drive then took us to lake Okareka where a meandering board walk through wetlands got us close to the busy bird life and then on to the insignificant outlet. Back at the car park the drivers received their mileage money then we returned home after another interesting day, thanks to Flick. Out of Zone Enrolments 2019 Choosing a school

Deciding which school to enrol your child in is one of the biggest decisions a parent can make. It's important to evaluate schools to see if they're the right fit for your child. The right choice will impact positively on your child, put them on a path for life-long learning and help with their future success.

When to enrol your child

Children can start school between the age of 5 and 6, but they must be enrolled by their sixth birthday and then attend school on a regular basis. Cohort entry allows children to start school before their fifth birthday. Designed to help schools with their planning, cohort entry is when new entrants start school in groups throughout the year, at the start of each school term.

Academic standard

While good test scores can be indicative of a high performance school, they may also be an indication that the school is teaching to the test. Look into a school's curriculum and assess whether it is rich, diverse, and suited to your child's needs and learning style.

Teachers matter

Good schools champion great teachers. Look for schools that provide teachers with mentors and quality support. Is the teaching staff happy? A positive school environment is defined as a school having appropriate facilities, well-managed classrooms, available school-based health supports, and a clear, fair disciplinary policy. School size

A smaller school is likely to have a good sense of community and individual attention. However, due to its smaller size, the curriculum may not be as board or diverse as a larger school. Find out what is on offer: which schools have the capacity to make important contributions to your child's progress, self-esteem and capability? Some offer more specialisation than others.

Building relationships

Relationships that children build with their friends and teachers are regarded as the most important aspects of school life. Secure, sustained friendships over time are closely linked with feelings of confidence and selfworth. An environment that fosters friendliness and acceptance helps children to better adjust to school, and in turn, can enhance their ability to learn.

is crucial to their happiness, performance and success. A 2012 report by the Education Review Office notes a close link between the cultural diversity principle and the inclusion principle. The report states that both of these principles require teachers to value students as individuals and celebrate the diversity that they bring. Schools are encouraged to consider whether their inclusive practices include valuing the cultural diversity of all individual students.

A school's vision

Does the school have a vision and mission statement that establishes clear expectations and standards? A school community with a shared vision based on a set of core beliefs and values has an empowering framework for monitoring how well it is doing and whether individual strategies and activities are aligned with the core values.

Diversity

Children come from a large range of backgrounds and ethnicities, and they enter school with differing learning abilities, experiences and social skills. Teaching and learning programmes that acknowledge, reflect and cater to diversity create environments that are inclusive, supportive and enriching. As more and more students from varied backgrounds are populating classrooms, making them feel welcomed, supported and provided with the best opportunity to learn

The Kaipaki School Board of Trustees has received a number of enquiries from parents of out of zone students seeking to enrol their children at the school next year. Because the board operates an enrolment scheme, it is required to fill any vacant out of zone places by ballot in cases where there are more applications for enrolment than there are places available. Due to the ongoing success of our school and the construction of new learning spaces, the board has determined that 15 places are likely to be available to out of zone students for enrolment in the Year 1 to Year 6 areas of the school in 2019. The exact number of places will depend on the numbers of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone. The board is prepared to receive applications, in addition to those it already holds, so long as they reach the school by 27 September 2018. If a ballot is required, it will be held on 02 October 2018. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held. You are most welcome to visit us: 687 Kaipaki Road Please contact the school office for further information: office@kaipaki.school.nz or Ph 823 6653

OUT OF ZONE ENROLMENTS We welcome out of zone enrolments from Years 0-8. Our vision of "Explore your limits" encompasses our beliefs on the purpose of school. We promote our values of Challenge, Courage, Explore, Community and Growth by using the above visual. When learning, our boys and girls have to enter the learning pit and use all of the values to grow. When they do this they leave the pit higher than when they entered, showing that the learning they have undertaken has enabled them to grow. For further information or to be shown around the school by our Principal, Gavin Clark, please contact Find us on Facebook admin@hautapu.school.nz or phone the school – Hautapu School Community office on 07 827 7466

Health, Beauty and Wellbeing Spring cleansing

Spring is traditionally the season we try to get things in order, such as spring cleaning. After emerging from winter cold and ills, spring season is a good time to get our bodies in order, get some health checks done and think about warmer weather routines. By taking charge of our health, potential problems can be identified before they start. Regular health exams and tests can also help find problems early when the chances for treatment and cure are better.

Find excuses to move

Lighter, warmer weather inspires us to get outside more. There are more opportunities to go for walks with friends, increase our fitness levels, play outdoor sports, garden and work outdoors. A popular goal is the minimum 10,000 steps a day. You can set personal goals to increase your distance. Getting your heart rate up every day is beneficial to physical and mental health.

Skin checks

With skin cancer rates in New Zealand the highest in the world, preventing exposure to ultraviolet light is vital. Slip Slop Slap and Wrap easily reminds us of the four key ways we can protect ourselves from UV radiation: wear protective clothing, apply sun block liberally and repeat application regularly if out in the sun, stay out of the sun in shade and wear a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses. Adhering to these simple measures can reduce the amount of UV exposure and, in turn, reduce skin cancer rates. Mole mapping is also highly recommended. As our skin is always changing, tracking the changes through technology is the most effective way to detect melanoma in its early stages, when it’s most treatable.

Set your circadian pacemaker

Your body's sleep clock may need retuning to get in synch with the increased sunlight hours. Sunlight programmes our body clocks and helps regulate our sleep and wake rhythm. Neurologists recommend having consistent wake-up times. This, in turn, impacts on bedtimes and shifts them into place. Prioritising good sleep is the most important biorhythm.

ULTRASOUND

Like most products, cosmetics expire, so take a few minutes to spring clean your make-up drawer. Old make-up not only becomes compromised over time and works less efficiently, it can do major damage to your skin. As molecules can break down, you can run the risk of eye infections, inflammation and bacteria-induced skin breakouts. Also, the SPF in foundation can become weaker and less effective over time.

Healthy eating habits

Winter weather and comfort food are good companions, but come spring, you may see just a little too much comfort sitting on your waistline. Establishing regular meal-times, focusing on healthier foods, reducing the consumption of junk food snacks, reducing your portion sizes and increasing water intake, particularly before eating, are good habits to introduce in the new season.

Know Your Local Bartender Movers and shakers

Bartending

Working in the fast-paced environment of bartending requires a range of skills, including the ability to think on your feet and the capacity to work quickly and efficiently. It's a very serviceorientated profession. As people from all walks of life can sit down for a drink, a good bartender is one who can converse easily with customers. Communication skills are essential. A friendly bartender creates an environment where customers feel welcome and well attended to. Bartending is an amazing skill to have, but it can often take a bit of time to learn. It requires physical fitness and stamina, a good memory and the ability to work in a team. Tact and diplomacy may also be required to handle difficult situations, if and when they arise.

Stables on Alpha

Professional bartenders are good mixers – not just with people but with drinks. They have expert knowledge of what goes into making a good drink and draw on a specialised vocabulary of words and phrases. The world's greatest cocktail mixologists are craftspeople who have honed their craft to a science. They have influenced cocktail culture and impacted on the way we drink cocktails today. Mastering cocktail making involves a lot more than sloshing some spirit and mixer into a glass and popping a garnish on the top. From the classic cocktail to the great new cocktail, achieving the right balance of flavours is all-important.

Riccardo Carminati

ALPINO CUCINA E VINO

Riccardo Carminati came to New Zealand in 2011 on a working holiday visa. The couple have a seven month old daughter and live in Ohaupo where they enjoy the country environment. The Carminati family has a tradition of working in hospitality and it's a profession that fits Riccardo like a glove. He has natural charm and a genuine desire to provide exemplary service. Riccardo studied at a hospitality school and describes himself as an all-rounder, skilled in all facets of the restaurant trade. Over the years he's worked his way down country, moving from Auckland to Hamilton, and now Cambridge. The friendly barman of Alpino Cucina e Vino enjoys a collaborative work relationship with owner Noel Cimadom and is excited by Noel's plans for the restaurant.

Danelle Maclarn

STABLES ON ALPHA

Danelle Maclarn began her hospitality career as a 16 year old working in a Morrinsville café. From small beginnings as a café worker, Danelle decided last year to shift her career into top gear by purchasing the wellestablished bar and family restaurant, Stables on Alpha. Danelle first worked at Stables in 2008, but left to raise her twin boys, now eight. She returned three years ago. When the opportunity to purchase the business from David Lorigan arose, she leapt at the chance. “I always dreamed of owning my own bar and restaurant.” Since purchasing the business, Danelle has revamped the décor and is soon to create a courtyard bar on the street frontage. Stables has become popular for its large dining area and function room, which host all manner of functions and celebrations. As a hands-on owner, Danelle has lots of vision for her business. She loves the people aspect of the job and loves that she is still learning about different aspects of the industry.

This is a heart-warming story that explores the common shared and hilarious experiences of family feelings and lively modern-day love. The story follows New Yorker Rachel Chu as she accompanies her long-time boyfriend, Nick Young, to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time and nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. It turns out that he is not only the son of one of the country’s most notable and wealthiest families, but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. It soon becomes clear that while money can’t buy love, it can definitely complicate things. You can’t help falling in love with this movie.
