Victory for Voss at rowing champs

Cambridge’s Samantha Voss is on top of the world after winning the under-23 world title in the women’s single scull.

The 22-year-old St Peter’s School graduate was a new comer to the single at an international level, but was “readier than ever” to compete after missing out on the 2017 Under 23 World Championships due to a broken ankle. She outraced last year’s bronze medallist, Emily Kallfelz of the United States to claim the title at the event in Poland over the weekend. “That was really hard but really amazing,” she said after the final race. “18 months ago I broke my ankle and was told I would never row again, so to recover and to win here is amazing.” Sam also secured the fastest time from the semi-finals, and started out the final race with the best speed. But Kallfelz took the lead early in the race with Ruth Siddorn of Great Britain following in third. The three led the way through the first quarter of the race, with Desislava Georgieva of Bulgaria soon securing third, hot on the heels of Voss. By the final kilometre Kallfelz had picked up the pace and Voss needed to do a huge sprint to get to the front, as the two moved ahead of the pack. The encouragement for the Kiwi was deafening as Voss finally caught up to Kallfelz and passed her. Voss’s time of 7:28 was just one second outside of the under-23 World Best Time. Kallfelz took silver and Georgieva bronze. The Championships, which took place on Poznan’s Malta Lake, saw five days of racing with finals raced over the last two days. New Zealand’s men’s coxed four secured silver in the A final, and the NZ men’s four secured bronze in their A final. Samantha Voss was the only Cambridge Samantha Voss said it was “really amazing” to win the women’s single scull U23 world title after being told 18 months ago rower to compete for New Zealand at the event. that she would never row again. donation from the Cambridge Community Charitable Trust, reminding us that there are more good people than bad in our local community. I also had the chance to hear a holocaust survivor speak at St Peter’s this week, an experience which has stayed with me. Although we know of the horrors of what happened to Jewish people in Europe in the 1940s, it’s not until you meet one of them in person that it really hits home what they went through. It’s truly gut wrenching and heart breaking. It reminded me how lucky we are to live in New Zealand, and inspired our Street View topic this week: What are you most grateful for? It’s something we should all think about every day.

The ever-popular New Zealand Symphony Orchestra returns to Hamilton next week – this time bringing with them one of the world’s finest violinists, the Grammy Award-winning Augustin Hadelich. Hadelich features in the NZSO’s Beethoven & Brahms tour, coming to Hamilton on Friday, August 10. The Italianborn 34-year-old will play Beethoven’s Violin Concerto – the only violin concerto written by the great composer. Beethoven & Brahms is the third of NZSO Music Director Edo de Waart’s 2018 Masterworks series. “He is a beautiful player,” said De Waart. “Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is not an easy concerto that every violin virtuoso can play. He’s great at it.” The NZSO will also perform Brahms’ lush, romantic and uplifting Symphony No. 2. Brahms took 20 years to write his First Symphony to a mixed response from audiences and critics. But his Second Symphony, which premiered a year later, was fully embraced and is still an audience favourite. “It’s a great symphony,” said De Waart. Cambridge News has a double pass to give away to next week’s Hamilton concert. Just send your full name and contact number to sophie@ cambridgenews.nz with the subject line “NZSO” no later than 9am, Tuesday 7 August.

Holocaust survivor speaks at St Peter’s

By Sophie Iremonger

Students and staff at St Peter’s School were treated with an eye-opening visit from a holocaust survivor this week. Paris-born Polish Jew Vivienne Spiegel, who immigrated to Melbourne in 1948, shared the heart-wrenching story of her childhood during World War II, where she and her two younger siblings narrowly escaped with their lives. Vivienne was joined by her son David, travelling on a tour of New Zealand schools organised by the Zionist Federation of New Zealand, visiting St Peter’s School on Monday this week. The room stood still as she recalled the horrors that took place from age 6. Born to a shoemaker father and seamstress mother in 1934, she grew up in a working-class area of Paris. When her father Morsko Rigman received a letter in 1941, he asked then-six-year-old Vivienne to read it for him, and told her what wonderful reading she had done, despite receiving news that he would be sent to a Nazi internment camp. “I never saw him again,” she recalled, only learning for certain in the 1980s that both of her parents had died in concentration camps. “With the wearing of the star, all our human rights went away,” Vivienne recalled, explaining that Jews in Paris in 1942 could no longer use public facilities and could only buy food in the evenings, when most items had sold out. “The atmosphere at home changed overnight,” she explained. With her father gone, her mother worked tirelessly to provide for her three children. They were taken from their home by French police in July 1942 to a local velodrome, where thirteen thousand Jews had been kept inside for two hot summer days with no food, water or toilets, being processed before eventually being taken to concentration camps. “The smell was putrid, and the noise overwealming. Men were screaming, women were howling, babies were crying, it was simply horrible.” Luckily, after a few hours her mother managed to get them out of there after learning that families with children under 2 weren’t supposed to be there that day. “I remember distinctly that there were many babies and toddlers there,”

Vivienne recalled. “French police were arresting more families than the Germans actually required for that particular round up. There was not a single Nazi soldier … Only a handful of people survived, but none of the four thousand children who were there ever came back.” Vivienne and her younger brother and sister were soon smuggled to a family farm in the village of Chouffour, Notre Dame. They never saw their parents again. “It was only after I became a mother myself that I felt the pain and anguish that my mother must have gone through at the time,” said Vivienne, who stayed with a loving Catholic family until Americans liberated the village in 1944, at which point they had to go to a Jewish orphanage, where concentration camp survivors were returning to collect their children. “My brother and I constantly kept our fingers crossed, hoping desperately that at least one of our parents would also come back, but that never happened.” As Jewish orphanages in France began to close in 1948, they were told a Jewish family in Australia wanted to adopt them, but after weeks of travelling by ship they arrived in Melbourne only to learn that they were simply joining another orphanage there. “It was absolutely shocking, and I think I was as close to a nervous breakdown as any child could be,” Vivienne said. In 1950 they were finally adopted. “I must emphasise, that although I was so upset when I first arrived in Australia, that today I consider myself extremely lucky to have landed in the wonderful free country of Australia, where not once in the 70 years since my arrival have I been discriminated against for being Jewish,” Vivienne said. “My dream was always to have a family of my own, I have succeeded in that. … I am sure that I would have made my mother and father, who were so tragically taken and killed, very proud.” When asked what message she had for younger generations, Vivienne said, “I think today, if children, or anybody, sees injustice or discrimination against any human being in the world, because of the colour of their skin or the shape of their eyes, somebody has to have the strength to speak up for them, just like the Catholic farmers stood up for me when I was a child.”

Vivienne Spiegel and son David Spiegel field questions from the St Peter’s crowd.

Cambridge funeral home to give away profits The Cambridge community is set to benefit from ongoing donations following the sale of Cambridge’s oldest and largest funeral home, Cambridge Funeral Services, to Legacy Funerals. Long-time local funeral director Stuart Houchen said he was delighted to hand the business over to Legacy, knowing that they would not only continue the high level of funeral care, but also put profits back to the local community. “It’s really a remarkable act of philanthropy,” he said. With the purchase of the funeral home, Legacy has committed to gifting the profits from Cambridge Funerals to the local community. Greg Brownless, director of Legacy Funerals, established the Legacy Trust in 2007 when he gifted his Tauranga funeral business to the local community. Since then Legacy Trust has distributed over $2.8 million to local charities, schools, clubs and other worthwhile causes from the Tauranga based Legacy Funerals and

Todd Gower Funeral Services. “We are very excited to continue the great work that Stuart has done in the Cambridge community over the last 13 years,” he said. “Cambridge Funerals is the leading funeral home in the district and we are thrilled to be able to bring our unique gifting model to Cambridge. “We are looking forward to working with the community to make a real difference.” The Albert St funeral home was established in 1945 and Stuart Houchen has been a respected Funeral Director with Cambridge Funerals for 13 years, prior to his twenty years in the police as a forensic photographer. Mr Houchen will become an ambassador for the Legacy Trust, to help identify charities and organisations that would benefit from funding in Cambridge. The Cambridge Funerals name, telephone and email contacts will all remain the same, with Quentin Quin taking up the role of manager from August 2018.

From clay to coasters for local artist

By Viv Posselt

One of the artists featuring in August’s coaster show in Tirau is Cambridge potter Diane Parker. Her inclusion in Deciduus Gallery’s show entitled The Forest Floor marks a ground-breaking shift for the Kaipaki Rd resident, a move away from the familiarity of clay to embracing new forms of creativity. “I hadn’t been doing much really … I’ve been having a very quiet time in terms of productivity,” Diane explained. “Taking part in this show is me coming out of that.” Deciduus Concept Gallery – owned by Cambridge artist Santie Cronje and her partner Shane Berger – opened in May to showcase indoor plants and fine art with a botanical/nature theme.

They collaborate with New Zealand artists to curate seasonal displays and group shows. Diane responded positively when a friend suggested she heed the gallery’s call for artists to enter their August 4-26 coaster show. “Winter is a great season for reflecting and considering new directions, and this opportunity was not be to missed,” she said, “even though it meant a steep learning curve.” The Forest Floor theme was intended to inspire artists to create up to four mini artworks on coasters exploring the world that inhabits the floor of our forests. Santie sees it as “a place alive with secrets and treasures”, rich with mosses and lichens, fallen leaves, logs, insects, fungi and ferns. Diane’s interpretation is of the forest floor as “a

host to new beginnings”, she said. She uses watercolours and metallic pens to tell its story, using gold and silver threads to represent movement of the invertebrates living in that landscape, and resin as the cool wet that holds it all together. It’s miles away from her familiar creative space – that of working clay. Diane is an established clay artist who used the closure of a family engineering business as an opportunity to express the artistic genes she said had long been lurking within. Drawing on her childhood love of stonewear domestic vessels, she taught herself how to work with clay. It was only in 2005 that she did a diploma in ceramic arts through the Waikato Society of Potters, a distance learning programme through Otago University. She loved every moment of it, then went on to steer tutoring workshops in her craft. “That was until about 18 months ago, then I decided to self-nurture for a while. I didn’t do much creatively, which is why this show is a bit of a comeback for me. “I’m discovering watercolours, pen and paper work … I am just enjoying finding out about the new media out there. And while these materials don’t have the same physicality as clay, they’re certainly easier to being into the lounge at night! They’re much more accessible in that way.” With a view to even more experimentation,

Diane has just started a print-making course offered through the Waikato Society of Arts. “I’m thinking how I might be able to blend the two together – the clay and the print-making,” she said. “But right now, I’m just having a wonderful time.”

Demand drives need for second shuttle By Viv Posselt

Cambridge will soon get its second St John Health Shuttle vehicle and is sounding the call for locals to help swell the pool of volunteer drivers. The first free community health shuttle was launched here in 2015, but increasing demand has hastened the need for another. A total of $35,000 has been raised to cover the purchase costs of the Hyundai Tuscon vehicle, the defibrillator it will carry, and to have it signwritten. The new shuttle is expected to go into service within the next few weeks. Cambridge Health Shuttle team leader Brent Nielsen said the funds had come via two generous donations. One was from the Frances Skeet Charitable Trust, managed by Accounted4, and the other through local philanthropists, Margaret and Bernard Pearson. In late 2016 the Pearsons donated a new ambulance to Cambridge St John, electing to make the gesture after reading about the service at Lauriston Park Retirement Village, where they live. “They heard of our need for a second vehicle, and offered to help fund it,” said Brent. “We are very lucky to be the benefactors of two exceptional and generous donations.” Rapid growth in client numbers has brought the need for a second shuttle into focus. Brent said the existing vehicle is currently doing about 300 client journeys a month, with its 10-seater capacity almost always

filled. “It has steadily grown to that number … indications are that if we continue tracking that way, we could get close to 500 journeys a month within a year. “Our population growth is one reason, but it is also a fact that mainly older people use the health shuttle - although not exclusively - and that is a fast-growing demographic everywhere in New Zealand. It is anticipated there will be a further 33 percent growth across that sector in the coming decade.” Most journeys are to Waikato Hospital or other health-related appointments in the city; the van often does up to five trips a day to and from Hamilton. Many clients require transportation to and from similar appointments in Cambridge, and up to a quarter of the pickups are from outside Cambridge township. Other related transportation providers are also understood to be increasingly busy. Keeping the wheels rolling is a dedicated team of trained volunteers. The optimum team number is nine for the existing shuttle, but Brent thinks around 15 will be needed with a second vehicle in service. Cambridge’s Richard Vaughan has volunteered with the service for the past two years, and really enjoys it. “Until then I had been involved with Community House, and I wanted to continue being involved with a community support group in a way that meant I didn’t have the headache of administrative

Local philanthopists, Margaret and Bernard Pearson, with the St John ambulance they helped fund for Cambridge in 2016. work,” he said. “This is perfect for me. The two things I probably enjoy most about it are the relationships built up with some of the regular clients, and the fact it has made me realise how lucky I am to have good health. It helps you put extra value on your own life.” Having two health shuttles in Waikato towns is not uncommon, said Brent. Te Awamutu, Morrinsville and Te Aroha have two, while Matamata has three. Potential volunteers would need to be ablebodied individuals with a clean criminal record and a standard car driver’s licence. While their time

is given voluntarily, team members are provided with a uniform and are given reimbursement

to enable them to buy light refreshments while waiting at client appointments.

Those keen to enlist or find out more should contact Brent Nielsen on 823 7551 or 021 576 136.

Fundraising in the works for historic organ By Sophie Iremonger

St Andrews Church is working to raise funds for a massive project to restore the church’s 119-year-old organ, believed to be the first organ built in this country by a New Zealander. The magnificent instrument still has some of the original 1880s pipes, and still belts out spectacular sound for those who attend the regular Sunday services or other events held inside the historic 1881 building. “Not only is it a good quality instrument, you’re finding that there are fewer and fewer of these,” said the church vicar, Reverend Malcolm French. “As well as the aesthetic value

it also has historic value. The iconic organ has played a key role at the church over the last century, sounding out song to the many weddings, funerals and other events held there over the years, making it not just a special part of the church, but of Cambridge as well. “I think it is an organ that is worth preserving, and it’s a good instrument,” said Reverend French. The refurbishment is expected to cost around $32,000, and members of the church are already planning fundraising activities and events to help reach the target, including parishioner Jacqueline Stephenson. “It’s a community thing too, not

necessarily a parishioner thing,” she said. “The church is synonymous with Cambridge, everybody knows it. … New Zealand has such a limited amount of history, and really as a community we need to preserve it.” A Givealittle page has been set up for the project, and those behind it are welcoming and encouraging input from the local community. Those who would like to contribute in any way can contact Jacqueline on

Roz Robinson, coordinator of Music Ministry at St Andrews, who usually plays the organ, described it as a beautiful instrument. “It is quite lovely,” she said, “of course organs are quite expensive to maintain over time, but it’s worth it.” To donate towards the cause, visit https://givealittle.co.nz/ cause/st-andrews-church-organrefurbishment#

Cambridge’s musicians competing in the national Smokefree Rockquest have ended their journey in the 2018 competition. After making it past the regional final rounds and into the semi-final round of recording a live performance, judges did not choose the two local bands for the national final. It was a great effort by St Peter’s student George Roberts, who led the Hamilton Boys’ High School band Casper as lead singer and bassist, having won the regional final overall. Cambridge High School’s Betend Rocket placed second at the regional final, but also weren’t able to make it into the national final. Te Awamutu’s Suggested Serving Size were the only Waikato band to make the national final.

Councils streamline resource consenting

Nine Waikato councils have banded together to develop a more consistent resource consenting process between councils, aiming to reduce costs and duplication for customers. Each Council will maintain its own statutory responsibilities but work from a common base, using the same resource consent application forms and decision letters. Waikato District Council chief executive Gavin Ion said a more stream-lined and consistent consenting process would be welcomed by customers who can struggle with the bureaucracy and time involved in applying for a resource consent. “Customers working with multiple councils should find the consenting process more efficient,” he said. Councils involved are Thames-Coromandel, Hauraki, Waipa, Waitomo, Rotorua Lakes, Matamata-Piako, South Waikato and Waikato District Councils as well as Hamilton City Council.

$75K donation for Community House The Rotary Club of Cambridge Community Trust recently made a generous donation of $75,000 to Cambridge Community House to assist with the development of their new counselling building. Both Rotary and the Community Trust have recognised over a long period of time the value that the Community House brings to the community, and wanted to assist wherever possible with the development of the much-needed facility. On behalf of the Community Trust, David Cooney acknowledged the great

work that Community House does for the local community. With demand for their services growing rapidly, the development of the new facility will allow greater access and a larger and safer environment for Community House staff to work. The donation was the last to be made from the Rotary Community Trust as it has recently changed its name to Cambridge Community Charitable Trust, to better reflect the trust’s objectives to meet the needs of the Cambridge community.

With Cambridge Community House (CCH) manager Joanne Turner unable to attend due to illness, CCH trustee Don Harris accepted the $75,000 cheque from David Cooney on behalf of the Cambridge Community Charitable Trust.

Students at Horahora School were entertained by aerialists Jess and Jair Ramirez recently. The pair wowed the students with a 40-minute show comprised of a variety of acts, from one-onone balancing acts to swinging high on silks and on a hoop. The daredevil performance on the last day of Term 2 sparked a few “oohs” and “aahs” from the crowd, and even the occasional scream as

to finish the term, and everyone enjoyed it immensely,” said Joanne Synge, principal. “That was so cool, I want to do that when I grow up!” one of the students added.

Theft at charitable organisation

Cambridge Community House received a low blow last week when the charitable organisation had several items stolen. A laptop, computer monitor and docking station were stolen from the Shakespeare St premises on the night of July 24 - 25. A police forensics team could not find evidence of a break in. After posting about the incident on social media, the organisation has received several offers of support from the community. “Thank you all so much for your kind words of support,” said Joanne Turner, manager of Cambridge Community House. “We are fortunate to have not lost too much in this break-in. We are able to continue with our work as usual. Great team we have here!” Anyone who may have information about the incident should phone the Cambridge Police on 07 827 5531 or phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

New billboards to Timber! attract visitors Two new billboards were erected on the Waikato Expressway this week to encourage drivers to pull off and call into Cambridge. Developed under guidelines put in place by the NZ Transport Agency, the billboards each feature a unique image, one depicting rowers at Lake Kārapiro and the other showing the historical St Andrew’s Church.

One was placed to attract traffic travelling south before the Cambridge / Avantidrome off-ramp, and the other placed before the Victoria Rd exit to Cambridge for those travelling north. The images were taken by Cambridge photographer Meghan Maloney, who also captured the photographs on the other Waipa Home of Champions billboards around the district.

Unfortunately one of Cambridge’s grand old trees met its end recently after storm damage rendered it unsafe for the public. One of the many large trees lining the athletics grounds on Hamilton Rd couldn’t be saved after its structural integrity was compromised, and it had to be cut down late last month. With winter’s grip firmly in place, a few people could be seen cutting chunks from the felled tree this week, most likely for firewood. Council confirmed the tree would be replaced within the next month or two.

MEDIA RELEASE Supplied by Ministry Of Health

Let’s track the flu so we can help you The Ministry of Health's Director of Public Health welcomes the introduction of a new way to track influenza online in New Zealand. This year, the Ministry of Health is working together with Australia in the FluTracking initiative –an online health monitoring system designed to track flu-like symptoms across the country. While health officials are busily preparing for this year’s influenza season, which includes the distribution of this year’s vaccine to hospitals, pharmacies and general practices around the country, this new online tool will help New Zealanders monitor the spread of the flu. “Every week during the influenza season, participants will be sent a link to answer a couple of simple flu-related questions,” says Director of Public Health, Dr Caroline McElnay. “The survey will take less than 10 seconds to complete and will help researchers to determine the onset of flu by region, the effectiveness of the vaccine in New Zealand and the severity of the influenza season. This information will be used to inform planning ahead of future influenza seasons.” “That’s why it’s crucial that as many people as possible sign up to FluTracking – the survey takes little to no time to complete but provides invaluable insights to those monitoring flu this year.” This year’s vaccine protects against four strains of influenza. “It’s also worth noting that the flu vaccine is free to people aged 65 and older, pregnant women (at any trimester) and people with chronic or serious health conditions, such as heart disease, cancer or severe asthma.” Dr McElnay acknowledges New Zealand already has a comprehensive surveillance system in place when it comes to monitoring influenza. And she’s keen to reiterate that FluTracking is just one of those programmes –but it is the only one that lets people participate directly. “Individuals and families can make a real contribution through FluTracking. And as with any new online tool, the more people who participate, the more accurate the data across New Zealand will be.” What are you waiting for – sign up and track the flu, so we can help you. About FluTracking (www.flutracking.net) FluTracking was developed in Australia in 2006 and in that time, has gained thousands of voluntary participants there. The online survey takes less than 10 seconds to complete every week, and asks participants whether or not they’ve had a cough or a fever in the past week and whether they’ve had the annual influenza vaccine. Each week after participant surveys are completed, the data is collated into a report. The reports show survey statistics, including respondent numbers for the week, and indicates rates of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) symptoms in New Zealand and also in individual regions where there is a sufficient sample size of respondents. This report is sent weekly to the Ministry of Health to contribute to the overall data picture of ILI in New Zealand, identifying influenza trends and hotspots around the country. It’s important to note that all information provided is kept confidential and only aggregated data (by regions) will be published in the weekly reports. At no time will your information be shared with any other agencies. Find more information about FluTracking and become a participant by registering online via www.cambridgenews.nz or (www. flutracking.net)

ARTiculate at Cambridge High

Cambridge High School’s bi-annual arts festival known as ARTiculate was on last week, where students showcased a range of art forms, from acting, dance and musical performances on stage, to fun events, art displays and even yarn bombing. “It was a very successful week,” said Larissa Peters, teacher in charge of Drama at Cambridge High School. “It was fantastic to see our students step up and help organise and run the week after a term of planning, rehearsing and organising. “We had a range of events that were well populated by the public and friends and families of our student performers. … A huge thank you to all of the staff and students involved in such a brilliant week, it was so rewarding to see them all shine and be celebrated by the audiences. Students clearly had a lot of fun and enjoyed the experience and challenges.” “Our overall goal was to show the school what we do in the arts here at CHS and I think we did that successfully,” said Michelle Jeffery, student leader on the ARTiculate committee. “It was great to see our evening audiences really enjoying the events. … I think it went really well.” The school’s Junior Homeroom class got involved in the event too, yarn-bombing a Cambridge High School’s Junior Homeroom class selection of trees in the school grounds after yarn-bombed and decorated the school with crafts last learning to knit, crochet, finger knit and week. make pom poms over the past year, thanks to donations of wool from the community. With family, friends and supporters helping to collect plastic lids over the past two years, the students also made a range of hanging and standing sculptures from the lids, based on their science programme of rubbish and recycling. The students and staff wished to thank all those involved in making the event such a success. The student cast of Dream On, performed at Cambridge High last week.

Trampers take on the wet

Cracker croquet for winter tournament By Pam Fisher, Leamington Croquet Club The Leamington Croquet Club held a winter tournament on Tuesday, July 24. The event attracted croquet players from clubs around the Waikato and Bay of Plenty, who enjoyed competing on a wonderfully sunny day. Winners were: Division A, first place: Callan McGrath and Allan Bruce from Matamata, four wins from five games, with a differential

of eight and 31 hoops. Runners up were Sue Truman and Seddon Polglase from Claudelands with four wins and a differential of eight and 26 hoops. Division B, first place: Anne Wood and Graeme Kennedy from Putaruru, four wins with a differential of seven and 31 hoops. Runners up were Bev Skilling and Michelle Bulpin from Rotorua, four wins and a differential of two and 27 hoops.

Submitted by the Cambridge Tramping Club On Sunday, July 22 Cambridge trampers decided, given the weather forecast, to take a relaxed stroll around lakes Puketirini and Hakanoa in Huntly. The meeting place was the Hopin Stopin Café at Taupiri. A coffee and sustenance was a good start to the cold, damp morning. We drove to Huntly West first. The walk around lake Puketirini took about an hour. This is a lake created after a coal mine was abandoned. It is now used for recreation and there is a well-maintained track round it and several picnic areas. There is also some good wetlands development and bird life. Very appropriate for the foggy, grey morning. Too early for lunch, so we drove up to Rangiriri to visit the historical pa site there. It is a short walk up to the Pa, the site of a fierce and bloody battle during the Waikato wars of 1863. It has been very well presented, with signs, pictures and

history. Well worth the stop. Back to Huntly and a lunch stop in the rotunda at Lake Hakanoa before circumnavigation of the lake. This area has been developed with areas planted with native vegetation to represent their countries of origin. The famous botanist and historian David Bellamy took a great interest in the area when he visited

a few years ago. A pretty walk of about an hour – even on a wet day. Unfortunately heavy rain dampened our bodies but not spirits and a good day was had by all. The next tramp for the Cambridge club will be a bike/walk on August 5th. Information and bike hire is available, phone Greta on 027 255 7225. For further enquiries contact Prue on 021 119 685.

Free parenting event for whole family Cambridge parents will no doubt benefit from a talk in Cambridge later this month, when Yvonne Godfrey brings her 13-stop Stronger Families speaking tour to Cambridge High School. Members of the public are invited to attend the free event on August 27, where the family coach, speaker and media personality will share her message on building a strong, happy family unit, and helping teens develop the right skills for life. “Today, we have far too many young people growing up unable to relate well to people face to face,” said Godfrey. “What’s more, parents seem less willing or able to teach their kids the people skills and behavioural boundaries they need to do well in life. It’s a new societal problem that requires us to look at the whole family.” The author of Independence And Success In Life, and, Making It On My Own; 52 Smart Way to Smash It in the Real World for teens and young adults, Godfrey is sowing her Stronger Families message into schools and communities on a 13stop tour from Cambridge to Invercargill, starting at Cambridge High School. Her leading aspiration is for parents to create a “family brand” that they and their children can thrive on, and her lessons for tweens, teens and young adults include confidence, independence, conflict resolution, and responsibility. “These aspects of young adulthood are

Yvonne Godfrey often sorely missing these days,” said Godfrey, “and it doesn’t bode well for a strong, happy family unit.” “Over time, all streams of my work have led to some common sense and effective strategies that equip families to live a secure, thriving and mentally well way of life. In other words, I’m helping families to become stronger, so that family life becomes more rewarding instead of being primarily an endurance race!” Cambridge High School will host the event for students and parents, as well as the wider public. All are welcome to attend. The event is free but families will need to RSVP by visiting strongerfamilies. co.nz and click “Book Your Seat”.

Thrilling finish in Rodrico’s favour

Cambridge trained racehorse Rodrico proved too strong in a thrilling threeway finish to the Woods Contracting Taumarunui Gold Cup (2200m) at Rotorua on Saturday. The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained five year old joined the successful local stable

after failing to find form in eight starts during a six-month stint in Hong Kong. Baker made no secret of his regard for the ability of the 2016 Gr.1 Queensland Derby runner-up after he started his New Zealand career with a win over 1600m at Hawera in May.

Rodrico and rider Bridget Grylls swoop out wide to win at Rotorua. Photo - Trish Dunell.

Four further starts in his current campaign had yielded three minor placings before he stepped up to the mark in the Rotorua staying feature on the weekend. Sent out second favourite in the event, Rodrico was settled in mid-field by rider Bridget Grylls before being asked to improve sharply at the 600m mark. Grylls and Rodrico set out after the pacemaking pair of Jochen Rindt and Trisha Lea and loomed to the front out wide early in the run home. The trio set down to a knock-em-down dragem-out struggle over the concluding stages which saw Rodrico put his head in front at the line with Trisha Lea second and Jochen Rindt a head away in third. “This is a race we’ve had in mind for him for a while,” Forsman said after the photo finish had been decided in his favour. “In his last start at New Plymouth he just struggled on the track and got beaten by a better one on the day. To be fair all his runs have been pretty

honest. He has always put in and today he has got in the right stride after a great ride.” Forsman was pleased with the performance of Grylls who has only recently returned to riding in New Zealand after a lengthy period in Australia. “She’s very

professional and we’re lucky to have her riding him,” he said. “She did the job perfectly.” Grylls was pleased to pick up the win so soon after making her New Zealand return. “It’s great to be back,” she said. “I was a little bit worried there as when he got to the

front he pricked his ears, but he kept going. We were quite wide without a lot of cover but when we got going around the turn I had a lot of horse underneath me. “I had to keep urging him, but he finished off nicely.”

Cambridge woman graduates Irish National Stud with Merit By Candice Gollan

Cambridge-resident Danielle Southey (pictured) has graduated from the Irish National Stud with Merit. Southey was the 2018 recipient of the Keith and Faith Taylor Equine

Scholarship that allowed her to further her education with a fivemonth Diploma Course at the Irish National Stud in Kildare, Ireland. The scholarship covered return air travel, enrolment fees and a grant to cover expenses. “My time at the Irish National Stud has been amazing,” Southey said. The 26-year-old was able to explore around Europe when she wasn’t studying but she also had some adventures with her classmates. They went to different studs and equine hospitals around the country. “I have enjoyed all the trips we have been on,” Southey said. “I want to thank everyone for opening their gates and for giving up some of their time to show us all around their facilities.” “I leave here with great memories and great friends.”

Swimmers bring back Aus medal haul By Sophie Iremonger

Twenty six swimmers from the St Peter’s Swim Club took the town-ofchampions status to Australia recently with fantastic results. Competing at the South Australian Short Course Swimming Championships over July 18 - 22 in Adelaide, the team brought home a massive total of 48 medals. “The team had an outstanding success rate with all improving their rankings and almost all of our team coming away with huge personal best swims across all their events,” said the squad’s head coach Aly Fitch. le Maps Rylee Britton, William Crofskey, Liam Elliott, Amelia Glover, Sarah Wilson, Caleb Thomas, Tyler Tapper, Anna Smith, Chelsea Sharp, Jade Morrison, Luke Mitchell, Eve McCormack, Boston Haddon and Thomas Griffin all picked up multiple medals at the event, including 15 medals for Luke, eight for Thomas, six each for Anna and Caleb and five for Eve. “I would describe it as a one of a kind,” Anna said of the experience. “I was lucky to be in the age group I was in, 13 and under, the 14 year old age group was harder,” said Anna, who turned 14 last Saturday, just after the competition ended. Eight-medal winner Thomas said socializing with the whole squad was a highlight, as well as competing against Australian swimmers. “There were definitely some fast ones,” he said. “It was great,” Rylee added, “the

(swimming pool) complex was amazing… It was a great experience.” After just three hours sleep, Rylee managed to shave a massive seven seconds off her PB time in the 200m breast stroke, 0.2 seconds off the Waikato record. “I was really happy with that,” she said. “I had a lot of fun, me and all the team mates,” said Caleb. “I really enjoyed it,” added William. “It was my second time and I improved on last year so that was good, got more PBs and a medal.” Tyler said a highlight from the trip

was racing in the evenings, when team morale was at its peak. “It was just a nice atmosphere, the team got behind us and all that,” he said. Several members of the team, including Caleb Thomas, Eve McCormack, Amelia Glover, Jade Houston, Anna Smith, Boston Haddon and Liam Elliott, made qualifying times for the national champs, with several improving their rankings and shaving considerable time off their PBs (personal-best swim times). “It was wonderful to see all the swimmers step up and fight in their races,” said Fitch. “To come away from a

tour with such a big personal-best swim rate is awesome, and was a great reward for all the team who trained so hard and committed so much to achieving their goals. “For all of them it is a fantastic step on their progression as young athletes and I know they all have come back so motivated to step up even more over the summer months.” The young swimmers said they wished to thank Fitch, as well as team managers Jo Blackwood and Phil Price, for doing such a great job supporting them in Australia.

Star Cars a good start in motor racing By Sophie Iremonger

Super Star Car racer Martyn Todd is hoping to see more people take up the sport, following on from a cracker two seasons where he won both series in 2017 and 2018. “I’m very happy with that,” Todd said of the wins, “but it’s more pleasing if you’ve got more cars out on the track, and that’s what we’re trying to do, get more people to come along and join us and have fun.” Star Cars have proven to be an ideal place for would-be speedsters to get started in the world of motor racing. The safer, more affordable form of racing only involves one set of slick tyres for the season, and a set of wets if needed. So drivers aren’t constantly wearing through their tyres, and don’t need a pit crew. The brake pads last all season as well, so really the only running costs are fuel and oil. “I do everything, I’m the pit crew, the team manager and the driver,” Todd laughed. “I’m it.” A mechanic by trade, Todd put his car together himself, with the parts supplied by Steve Bang of Star Racing Cars. Racers have the option of putting their car together

themselves from kitset form, or getting it complete from Steve. The purpose-built race cars, whose bodies can be changed and updated, utilize a Suzuki 1300 Hayabusa engine, with an integral six-speed sequential gear shift to enable close, fast racing, reaching speeds of up to 245kmph. Adjustability is paramount so that cars can be set up for each track, with space-framed chassis, a brake bias pedal box, four-wheel disk brakes and a multitude of adjustments in suspension. “It would have to be one of the cheaper forms of motorsport that you can do, because it’s a controlled class. All the cars are the same other than the body style, so everyone has the same chassis, same wheels,” Todd explained. “We’re in the Tier 2. The main players, like the V8 touring cars and that, they’re Tier 1. And then there’s us poor ‘broke’ people that just want to go and have some fun!” he joked. “It costs us a hell of a lot less and we’re probably having as much fun as them. “At the end of the day we’re only doing it for the fun of it… everyone helps each other. “If I find something that can be modified that’s beneficial to

Martyn Todd pictured with his Super Star Car, equipped with a Suzuki engine and Holden body. Photo – Michael Jeans. (one of the other competitors) I’ll tell them about it.” The classic Holden-versusFord rivalry is alive and well too, with Star Cars usually utilizing a Holden Commodore or Ford Falcon body. “I’m Holden, I’m not a Ford person,” Todd said proudly. “We’re trying to encourage more young people as well, there’s quite a bit of interest out of go-karts, because gokarts have got exceptionally expensive.”

Martyn’s racing blood turned hot when he was just a kid, starting out in go-kart racing. “I’m a petrol head from way back. One side of the family went to horses and I went to horse power,” laughed Martyn, the brother of equestrian eventer and show jumper Sir Mark Todd. Martyn moved up to racing drag-tractors at Fieldays each year, driving a super-modified tractor which “finally blew up” around 1999. “So I sold all the bits and built the race car,”

he explained. Now racing Star Cars at meets around the North Island during the October – May series, Todd hopes to see new petrol heads join in. “I like the thrill of racing, it keeps the blood circulating, and it’s the people thing as well, you go to the track and you can have a good time,” he said. Reds call for home ground support By Josh Easby

Cambridge go into their last home game of football’s Northern League season in need of a win to get clear of the risk of relegation. The Reds play Franklin United at John Kerkhof Park on Saturday (3pm kick off) and are urging local supporters to cheer them towards a much-needed victory. After a 4-2 loss at Auckland’s Bucklands Beach over the weekend, Cambridge slipped to second bottom place on the Lotto NRFL second division table. The two bottom teams in the competition at season’s end are at risk of being relegated. So tight is the competition that a win this weekend could lift Cambridge three or four league places. The Reds still have three away fixtures to come (against Northland, Te Atatu and divisional leaders Takapuna). A poor start cost Cambridge on Saturday when Bucklands Beach raced to a 3-0 lead within half an hour

with goals from Daniel Culpan, Josh Kingston-Smith and Ben Culpan. Reds defender Daniel Clarkin reduced the deficit to 3-1 when he converted a Callum MacLeod corner in the 33rd minute. However Kingston-Smith extended the home team’s lead to 4-1 before the interval. In the second half, Cambridge had the better of the play and in the 65th minute Daniel Clarkin scored his fifth goal of the season, getting the last touch to a MacLeod free kick. Meanwhile, in the curtainraiser, Cambridge reserves retained their lead in the Lotto NRFL second division reserves league after a clean sheet earned the Reds a valuable point against third-placed Bucklands Beach. The match at Auckland’s Lloyd Elsmore Park brought together the two teams with the best defensive records in the competition so it was hardly a surprise when they battled out a scoreless draw. The draw effectively ended Bucklands Beach’s hopes of catching Cambridge, leaving second-placed Takapuna AFC as the only serious contenders for the title. Takapuna drew 2-2 with Metro FC to remain three points behind the Reds, and with the two competition leaders due to meet in the final game of the season on Cambridge’s Jamie Woodlock will play in midfield against Franklin this weekend. In other games, Cambridge lost 5-1 to Waikato Unicol in the Loaded WaiBOP Championship. Cambridge took the lead at Jansen Park in the 10th minute through Hector Giraldo but Unicol then found their feet and went to a 2-1 lead at half-time before adding three goals in the second spell. Unicol scorers were Henry Leech (2), Riley Rigdon, Taylor BellBooth and an own goal. Cambridge also played Waikato Unicol in the Waikato men’s A division at Jansen Park, losing 4-1. Cambridge’s goal came from a Mitchell Claridge direct free kick. The Cambridge D1 side kept their lead of the Waikato D division with a 4-1 win at West Hamilton United’s Bremworth Park. Cambridge scorers were Dave O’Donnell (2), Dennis

Hommel and Scott Jenkins who put his away his sixth penalty of the season. The D2 team went in search of their fourth win in succession with a trip to Te Aroha Cobras. Missing a few regular players, the D2s suffered a 2-1 loss. Their goalscorer was Tom Horrix. Next weekend, the D1s host second-placed Te Aroha Cobras in a game that will be crucial to end-ofseason honours. Cambridge women’s team shared the points after a thrilling 3-3 draw with Northern United in the Waikato Women’s A-League. The draw extended the team’s unbeaten run to five games and keeps them in contention for a late run at the division title, especially with a match next week against leaders West

Hamilton United. Cambridge’s goals were scored by Astrid Howarth – her 20th of the season – Abby Cook (from the penalty spot) and Amy Ireland who netted the goal of the day with a superbly struck free kick. Amy Ireland was also named the Hill Homes Player of the Day and coach Andrew Taylor also singled out Carey Ireland and Chrissy Goodin for their outstanding performances. The Cambridge U-12 boys beat Melville United 3-2 at Hamilton’s Gower Park in the WaiBOP Federation Junior League. The teams raced to a 2-2 scoreline by half-time with Cambridge goals from Theo Susillia (11th minute) and Blake Taylor (22nd minute). Taylor grabbed the winner in the second half.

Sports students off to world stage August is an exciting month for a few local young cyclists and rowers. St Peter’s School students Ally Wollaston and Finn Fisher-Black will head off to the UCI Junior World Track Championships in Switzerland, and Becki Leigh and Brooke Kilmister are traveling to the Czech Republic for the Junior World Rowing Championships. Ally and Finn have been busy in the lead up to the event, having both competed at the North Island Schools Road and Track Championships

eight-week training camp. They are currently in the second to last week of camp and are all buzzing to go overseas. “Our main goals are to get into the A finals and be strong contenders for medals,” said Becki. The Junior World Rowing Championships will run from August 8-12.

The girls will be competing separately in teams of their own, Becki in the Women’s Quad and Brooke is in the Women’s Four. They have been training ever since their week-long trial in the Term 1 school holidays – which saw them complete a 2km erg test and a total of 19 1000m seat races, along with a 2000m time trial. “At the moment we’re in the middle of training, and I’m feeling tired but very excited for the weeks ahead, and the travel that comes with racing internationally,” said Becki. The New Zealand team trained individually for six weeks before they all moved to Lake Karapiro for an

Becki Leigh and Brooke Kilmister recently. Their consistent high performances in several selection events from late 2017 to early 2018 – including the Oceania Championships and the U19 and Elite Track Nationals – helped the pair gain selection on the NZ Junior team. Despite the off bout of illness, Finn has been training for the past 15 weeks. “There have been setbacks along the way but now I feel as though the program is tracking along nicely,” he said, adding that he has high hopes for the world event. “My biggest goal for the event is the same as everyone’s – to come home with a world title. But I would also be happy with any medal or even a new best time in my Individual Pursuit, as that is my main event,” he said. Ally has also faced some obstacles ahead of the event but is feeling on-form after a successful weekend of racing at the NISS Championships. “My main goal for the world champs is to make the podium in the Team Pursuit and get to top five in the Omnium,” she said. The ICU Junior World Track Championships will run August 15 -19. Ally Wollaston

Kiwis champions at Aachen

Cambridge’s Sir Mark Todd and Matangi’s Clarke Johnstone joined the New Zealand eventing team to notch their first-ever Nations’ Cup win in the CHIO Aachen in Germany recently, making history as just the second team ever to beat the Germans on their home ground. Johnstone, riding aboard his family’s horse Balmoral Sensation, and Todd with Kiltubrid Rhapsody – owned

by Niki Ryan and Dr Elizabeth Donald –were joined by Blyth Tait on Havanna and Tim Price aboard Cekatinka to compete at the event held July 19-21, with all four finishing strongly across the three phases. Price placed third individually, Johnstone fifth, Todd 13th and Tait 25th. Another Kiwi competing as an individual, Dan Jocelyn aboard Grovine de Reve, finished 27th. It was their superb performance in the cross

country that secured victory, having slipped to third place after the show jumping round from a second-placed position in the dressage. The Kiwis finished on 112.9 penalty points, with France second on 130.5 and Sweden in third on 146.3. Hosts Germany had to settle for fifth on 206.6. Johnstone said he was thrilled with the efforts of Balmoral Sensation, who had not long been in the Northern

Hemisphere. As he came off the challenging Rudiger Schwarz-designed cross-country course, Todd said it had been a difficult one to go fast on. “There might be one or two riders who stay in the time,” he said. “My horse jumped very well. It is a tricky course with difficult jumping efforts – it is twisty, up and down but

the going is absolutely perfect. The cut grass makes the horses want to jump.” Aachen is considered to be the closest to a true eventing championship outside of the Olympics and World Equestrian Games, with Nations’ Cup competitions across five disciplines, 350,000 spectators and over 800 media across the 10 days.

Lacrosse boys win Cambridge High School’s boys lacrosse team went up against last year’s season winners – Hamilton Boys High School – at their first game back from the school holidays on Sunday. Hamilton Boys managed to get their foot in the door scoring the first goal of the match, making it 2-1 within the first five minutes. “But out of nowhere it seemed like our team just clicked and everything I’d been coaching them in the last few months fell into place,” said their coach Anthony Murphy. “Our lads were moving into free space when they didn’t have the ball, getting free of their defenders, setting picks and the pace of our game was great.” However, Hamilton Boys were no pushovers. Though they too had a few smaller lads, they proved to be skilful ball handlers with excellent stick skills. “Once or twice one of their smallest and youngest players got the ball and weaved through our defence to net a

couple of goals, showing that speed and skill can beat size,” said Murphy. With a fully-stocked team of players, the CHS boys managed to take the victory 7-3. “I was ecstatic with my team’s performance,” said Murphy. “Today they were moving the ball around all of our players and playing a more complex and interesting game. It requires more thinking, communication and skill, and I’m really pleased to see that my players are picking it up. I’m looking forward to seeing them improve on this into the last six weeks of the season.” Player of the day went to the team’s goalie and co-captain James Burns. “He made three show-stopping one-on-one saves, on one occasion being peppered with shots and not allowing anything past him. He was a real rock today and helped lead the team from the rear.” This Sunday the team takes on Te Awamutu, 3pm at the Hamilton Inline Hockey Centre, Old Farm Rd, Hamilton.

MovieReview

INTERLUDE IN PRAGUE Mozart, music, murder, scandal. Beautifully directed, lovely music as you'd expect and lots of insight into Mozart though the gripping story based on true events. Prague, 1786. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart spends a few turbulent months escaping the frustrating, privileged elite of Vienna. However his unconventional presence soon unleashes a series of dramatic and tragic events. Overwhelmed by the tangled web of violence and intrigue that surrounds him and with his mind affected, Mozart creates the astonishing music and drama that becomes 'Don Giovanni'. If you loved Amadeus you'll love this movie.
