Racing facing overhaul By Claire Robson

The thoroughbred racing industry was given a shake-up recently, with the release of John Messara’s report into the future of horse racing in New Zealand. With a proposal to reduce the number of tracks from 48 down to 28, Cambridge emerged as a clear winner, named as one of three locations where new synthetic tracks could be installed. Also on the cards in the longer term is

the sale of the Cambridge track, as the report also recommended the creation of a ‘Waikato Greenfields’ site – a hub for Waikato racing to be established in the next 8-10 years. This proposed development would be funded by the sale of Cambridge, Te Rapa and Te Awamutu tracks. This custom-designed facility would be a “no-brainer” according to Cambridge Jockey Club president Bruce Harvey, who said a centralised Greenfields

‘hub’ will be crucial to secure the future of the industry. “Nearly every racecourse in the country is in decline – they can’t maintain their facilities,” Bruce said, pointing out that the first report recommending the centralisation of racing venues was released in 1965. “And five subsequent reports have said the same thing.” “It would be irresponsible not to act now,” he added, saying that a state-ofthe art venue such as the one proposed

Cambridge Jockey Club president Bruce Harvey said a custom-designed Waikato racing facility would almost certainly be based in the Waipa district, because that’s where the majority of horses are.

For all your clock, watch & barometer repairs

will help to attract younger trainers and owners. “Otherwise we’re just going to lose young people out of the game.” Demand for the 150-acre Cambridge facility on Racecourse Rd has grown markedly over the years, with the facility that was designed for 300 – 400 horses now bulging at the seams with 1000 horses a month training there, 1200 in the busy season. But with any Greenfields site almost a decade away, the Cambridge track could join Awapuni (Palmerston North) and Riccarton Park (Christchurch) with a synthetic track installed for both training and racing. “It makes sense, because Cambridge is the biggest training centre numbers-wise in Australasia,” Bruce explained. According to the report, if funding was agreed, construction of the new track could begin as early as next January, with training to start from May and racing to follow no later than next July or August. The report describes the synthetic track as “vital” for the Cambridge track’s training needs, and Bruce agrees. Minister for Racing Winston Peters, who released the report in Hamilton two weeks ago, said the report contains a number of recommendations to turn around the “dire” state the New Zealand racing industry is in. “No decisions have been made yet, and officials are assessing the report and preparing advice for Cabinet to consider. That includes considering all options and deciding what changes may need to be made through legislation,” Minister Peters concluded.

New to Cambridge? Child starting school? Looking for a change of environment for your child?

This week is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, Māori Language Week – a good chance to think about incorporating our indigenous language into daily life. Woefully ignorant about Māori culture, I am embarrassed to say that it wasn’t until I went to work for Child, Youth and Family that I had even set foot onto a marae. Being of a certain age (delicate cough), te reo was not something taught in schools beyond maybe singing a few Māori songs. My pronunciation was woeful, having been brought up thinking that Tea Awamootoo was the right way to say Te Awamutu, and it has taken me a long time and lots of practice to rectify this and other butcherings of te reo. It’s something I am committed to improving on, and I am heartened to see that my kids are receiving an excellent grounding at primary school. It’s great to see that times have changed, and will no doubt change further if the Green Party can get its policy of making te reo compulsory in schools by 2025 over the line. Battle of Britain Day. This week in communities all across Britain people will be commemorating Battle of Britain Day, September 15. In 1940, it was on this day that the German Luftwaffe conceded that the Royal Air Force (RAF) had not been subdued. They never attacked in such numbers again; 3,080 allied aircrew took part, 520 died, 14 New Zealanders among them, countless others were injured during those four weeks. We owed our very lives to the fighter pilots of the Battle of Britain, and this we should celebrate in New Zealand, as New Zealander Air Vice Marshal Keith Park along with more than 100 NZ pilots and hundreds of other New Zealand personnel played a significant part in its winning. Brian Dunstan (Abridged) Editor Every time I have to go to the Waipa council office I am impressed with the wonderful service I get from the ladies serving behind the counter. They are always polite and very keen to provide answers to any problems I have. I am surprised that, according to notices behind the counter, there are some people who feel the need to abuse these wonderful ladies. Michael Cole

problem with this, but I don’t really understand why. It’s a beautiful language and I for one feel that as a Kiwi my life has only been enhanced by learning more about te reo and Māori tikanga (the Māori way of doing things). I feel ripped off that I haven’t had it over my entire life, but it’s never too late to start. There are some cool apps out Claire Robson there to help you on your way, but there is no substitute for practice. I spent about two years driving home from Hamilton saying Māori place names over and over until it became second nature. I probably looked pretty daft in the car, but I’m glad that I got it sorted. I might not always get it right, but I am keen to keep trying. How about you? Claire Robson, editor

Car ablaze on Kaipaki Rd Motorists were shocked to see a car on fire on Kaipaki Rd last week, but thankfully no one was hurt. Cambridge News reader Paul Harris sent us this photo from the blaze on Thursday evening, reporting that the driver had pulled over just past the bridge, got out of the car and opened up the bonnet as smoke was billowing. “I stopped and managed to get him to move well clear as I knew it was fruitless, even with my fire extinguisher on board thanks to good training,” Paul said. “In his shocked state all he could do was watch. Thankfully we were able to keep traffic well clear.” Emergency services were called, but by the time firefighters arrived the car was engulfed in flames. Local call to Te Reo Māori ‘stop the drop’ – give it a go By Claire Robson

A small but passionate group of ‘Stop the Drop’ protestors brought the anti-1080 message to Cambridge on Saturday afternoon – part of a nationwide campaign against the controversial poison. Local protest organiser Koreen Stanley said they had received good support for the cause, but also had people disagreeing with them during their protest on the Duke St roundabout in town.

Protestor Bev Ashburner condemned the poison as inhumane. “It’s such a cruel way of dying, even for a pest,” she said. The protestors were also concerned that the poison, used in aerial drops to contain mammals such as possums and rats, is contaminating waterways and killing non-target species such as native birds and deer. This was a view echoed throughout the country from 12 – 2pm on Saturday, as thousands of people took to the streets to urge the Government to ‘Stop the Drop’.

What is 1080? 1080 is the common name for sodium fluoroacetate, it’s a synthetic poison but fluoroacetate is also produced naturally by some plants to prevent animal browsing. What’s in the bait? Cereal, sugar, flavour and dye are added to most of the 1080 pellets used for pest control in New Zealand, with the toxin making up 0.15 per cent of the bait. Why are we using it? The Department of Conservation says aerial 1080 drops are fast enough to protect vast, remote and rugged areas from pest population booms, such as during times of mass tree fruiting. They say that it is the only way to cover the terrain required and that it is cost-effective and poses little threat to the environment. Anti-1080 campaigners disagree with this, saying that the aerial poison drops are contaminating waterways and killing native animals and birds, deer and domestic animals (such as dogs), not just the possums and rats it is aimed at. Globally, New Zealand is the largest user of 1080, using around 80 per cent of the world’s supply. We have been using it since the late 1950s, importing it in its raw form from the United States. New Zealand is unusual in that the only native mammals we have are bats, meaning introduced pests such as possums have no natural predators.

Cambridge was among 40 sites throughout the country that saw anti-1080 protestors calling on the government to put a stop to use of the controversial poison.

With this week being Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori – Māori Language Week, Claire Robson went along to Nga Hau e Wha Marae in Leamington to find out how people can get started on their Te Reo journey. Heading along to Nga Hau e Wha Marae, the Cambridge Community Marae, I was keen to find out how people with limited confidence in their Te Reo might go about weaving it into their lives more than just for one week a year. Speaking with Zoë Forrest, the administrator for Mana Hapori, which works from the marae, I discovered there are a number of cool apps that can help people on the journey. The coolest one was Kupu, which was released by Spark in honour of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. This app allows users to take a photo of an object with their phone and it will give the Māori word, including pronunciation. Seriously cool and free to download. Zoë also showed me a host of other apps including He Aha Tēnei for kids, and Tipu – a smart way to build on knowledge in short increments of time. “Instead of going on Facebook while you are waiting somewhere, you can use the app,” Zoë explained. Which is great advice. She also said people who may not be so

well-versed in Te Reo should try not to feel whakamā (embarrassed) if they make a mistake. “We just have to be kind to ourselves,” she said, adding that we need to be open to correction where we get it wrong. “Just step out and do it,” she added. “Our kids are showing us up and it’s up to us to lead the way for them.” That’s a sentiment shared by Wayne Morris, Te Tairawhiti (Ngāti Pourou and Te Aitanga a Mahaki), Kaiako (teacher) at the Te Reo classes run at the marae, who said he didn’t want his mokopuna (grandchildren) to leave him behind. “That’s why I’m on this journey,” he explained. Also on the journey is Te Reo course graduate Dave Maugham, who did the beginner’s class run at the marae early this year. As well as learning to do his pepeha, Dave said he also learned a lot about the Māori culture from the course. “It helped dispel some wrong understandings,” Dave said. Because we can all do with more of that, I reckon.

Community Board Statement September 2018

After receiving further information, the CCB has passed a resolution recommending to council to reduce the number of councillors from 12 down to 10 across the district. The board has also recommended that the community board representation fall in line with this. The split recommended from the board would see four Cambridge councillors, one Maungatautari, three Te Awamutu, one Kakepuku and one from Pirongia. CCB considers that rather than the emphasis being placed on the number of councillors, it is more important that the ability of those councillors to effectively deliver representation, service and governance for the ratepayers is considered. Ten councillors would be expected to invest more time weekly than the current model (12 councillors) or the council’s preferred option (13 councillors). Although this may not lead to full time councillors it would introduce a remuneration level that would reward the extra time commitment, taking the salary from $29,540 to $38,400. This extra remuneration could also encourage more residents to stand for council, possibly resulting in a wider demographic representation if the role is more financially sustainable. The CCB believes the rural voice is very important for our district and under our proposal this representation

would be retained with 30 per cent of councillors elected from rural wards compared with 30.7 per cent under the council’s option. The Ward boundaries would need to be redrawn, however this was inevitable over time anyway. As a community your thoughts are welcome. The board also made a submission regarding the proposed Private Plan Change 11, relating to the Bardowie Industrial Precinct in Hautapu. Overall, we are in favour of this exciting development and the opportunities it will bring for employment and the huge spin-offs for our town. Over time it will give further opportunity for businesses to relocate to a purpose built area with a commercial and industrial focus. This may then present the possibility of freeing up more space around the wider centre of Cambridge for further retail and residential development. Our CCB meetings take place on the first Wednesday of each month starting with a Public Forum at 6pm, where members of the public are able to come and speak. To place an item on the formal agenda, please do so at least 10 days before the meeting, either by emailing myself on; mike.pettit@waipadc.govt. nz or our CCB secretary, Noelene.BarrAllwood@waipadc.govt.nz or contact any board member by visiting the waipadc webpage.

Old quarry sold By Claire Robson

A former sand quarry adjacent to the green belt reserve is set for development later this year, having sold to local business Progressive Investments. The 1.6-hectare block, which sits opposite the Cambridge Raceway on the corner of Vogel, King and Taylor Sts, was owned by the Waipa District Council and has been sold to help raise funds for the redevelopment of the town pool. Cambridge local Yann Wernli’s company has purchased the land, which will be split into approximately 30 residential sections, with each between 500m2 and 600m2. “Earthworks will be taking shape over the next few months, and we expect the site to be ready by the end of summer 2019,” Yann explained. Between 1900 and 1940 the site was a sand quarry, providing important roading infrastructure across the Waipa and local Cambridge Raceway. According to environmental engineering company AECOM, the site was backfilled with soil and refuse between approximately 1940 and 1950 before being used for grazing. “The property has been subject to multiple surveys by environmental consultancies and very little refuse was found,” Yann said. “The majority of the refuse was either burnt off or removed from the site, as indicated in the historic documentation. The fill material that is present at the site is largely sand, silt and/or clay material, so the land has

been deemed safe for residential use.” Jonathan Findon, environmental scientist and director at Geohazard Environmental Ltd said: “Additional soil sampling will occur at various phases as the project continues, including final validation sampling. Converting a site such as this from disused land is a sustainable use of land resources, and the developed properties will be suitable for residential use.” Yann said Progressive Investments will be selling some bare sections and building on others itself.

Cambridge local Yann Wernli’s company has purchased the former sand quarry on the corner of Vogel, King and Taylor Sts, with plans to split it into around 30 residential sections.

Incident a reminder of dog safety

The importance of safety around dogs became evident recently when a woman was bitten by a dog after entering the owner’s property. The woman, a representative from Genesis Energy, entered the local property through a latched gate which had “Beware of Dog” signage. Once inside, a dog which lived at the property bit her on the leg, requiring stitches. The dog’s owner, Leamington local Annalisa David, was not home at the time, and was surprised to see animal control officers arrive to detain the pit bull, Major, a few days later, receiving notice that a dog bite incident had occurred at the property. Turning to the Cambridge Grapevine Facebook page, she received confirmation that a Genesis Energy rep had been in the area at the time. The company eventually confirmed that the incident had taken place, adding that their worker had breached their health and safety guidelines, and offering to pay her pound fees. Facing prosecution for the incident, which could include a fine of up to $20,000 under council bylaw, as well as a possible grim fate for her dog, Annalisa sought advice from a lawyer. Following a meeting with Waipa District Council’s Animal Control department, Major was returned home the following Monday after almost a week in the pound. Karl Tutty, Environmental Services Team Leader at

Waipa District Council, said the case was still under investigation and they could not comment on any specific details until the process was complete, adding “no decision has been made on what enforcement actions will be taken yet”. “Under the Dog Control Act 1996 all attacks are considered on the same basis regardless of whether it occurs on private property or in a public place.” Annalisa said she was very happy to have Major home, adding that “it never should have happened”. “Every dog owner, if you don’t have access to the front door, padlock your gate,” she said, emphasizing the importance for visitors of any home to take ‘Beware of Dog’ signage seriously. “It’s just common sense,” she said. Karl said: “Any person should be prepared to encounter a dog when entering an unfamiliar property, even if there are no warning signs. Check for indications of a dog before entering an unfamiliar property like kennel, water bowl or bones. We’d recommend making a noise, tooting a horn or shaking gates to alert any dogs to your presence while you are still safely on the other side of the gate. Watch the dog’s behaviour towards you, and if in doubt, don’t go in. If possible, make an appointment prior to your visit.”

Centenary one for the books

The countdown is on to a week of spectacular events in Cambridge to mark the centenary of the liberation of Le Quesnoy, France, and the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. The week of commemorations will start on November 4 with a WWI art exhibition at the Town Hall and a photographic display of the liberation of the French town in the plaza outside. At 9pm on the same day, a short light and sound show will premiere, projected onto the outside of the Town Hall. Telling

The initial concept of Le Quesnoy Memorial Sculpture, subject to final design approval (arrow on picture pointing north).

the story of the walled town of Le Quesnoy which was liberated by Kiwi troops on November 4, 1918, the show will be voiced by a young French girl, representing a resident of the town at the time. The light and sound show is short and will be looped to run from 9 - 10pm, continuing each night at the same time through to Armistice Day (Sunday, November 11). Chairman of the Armistice in Cambridge group, which is behind the activities, Paul Watkins, said: “It’s appropriate that, due to the strong sister city connection between Cambridge and Le Quesnoy, the town marks this occasion in a way that puts it ahead of all other towns”. A key feature of the week will be the Le Quesnoy Memorial Sculpture. Designed by Waipa artist Fred Graham, this spectacular permanent 6-metre-high sculpture will be placed near Lake Te Koo Utu on the corner of Thornton Rd and Victoria St. The base it is to rest on is in the unique shape of the walls surrounding the town of Le Quesnoy (as shown in the artist’s impression). Paul added: “The Le Quesnoy

projects in Cambridge, including the sculpture, are funded primarily by the national WW100 Lotteries fund, which gave $135,000 towards the projects. This was added to with $12,000 from Trust Waikato and $5,000 from the Cambridge Community Board. The grand finale of the week will be the annual Armistice in Cambridge Event, which will be held at the Mighty River Domain over Saturday, November 10 and Sunday, November 11. Paul said: “This year’s event will be the biggest ever at the domain. The First World War was an artillery war, with over one and a half billion shells fired. For this reason, we are amassing a large number of historic artillery pieces, dating from as far back at the New Zealand Wars and the First World War. “Battle re-enactments at the event will include the liberation of Le Quesnoy, with a wall being constructed for that purpose, along with over 20 interactive activities for kids to do, designed to educate and entertain.” There will also be an Armistice memorial service at the Town Hall on November 11 at 10am.

Dog behaviour expert Hamish Young agreed with Karl’s advice, adding that in these situations, the visitor should never make eye contact with the dog, nor talk to it or touch it. “Stay calm, stand side on and allow the dog to sniff you through the gate. When it’s finished, enter the property while still completely ignoring the dog, especially not making eye contact. Most dog attacks on a property are triggered by eye contact.”

Chamber gets new CEO

By Claire Robson

The Cambridge Chamber of Commerce’s new CEO, Kelly Bouzaid, is positively fizzing about her new role, saying it has “come at the perfect time”. It’s an excitement shared by the Chamber’s president, Phil Mackay, who said the group was thrilled to welcome her to the organisation. “She joins us at an exciting time and comes to an organisation that’s in great shape,” he said. “Outgoing CEO Tania Witheford has seen the Chamber through substantial change and growth and formed strong relationships and partnerships. Kelly has the opportunity to build on this foundation and take Chamber in a fresh direction, as we continue to provide leadership and support for our business community.” Kelly has had extensive experience across a myriad of environs; national sales manager for several highprofile companies, general manager for Touchdown Productions, sales and marketing manager of Gulf News and the owner and operator of Waiheke’s iconic Schooner Café. Alongside the diverse range of skills she will bring

to the role, Kelly has also led and developed high performing teams and guided prominent companies through times of organisational change and crisis management. “Cambridge ticked all the boxes for my family, education, equine, employment and lifestyle opportunities. We have just celebrated a year here and we look forward to many more. With almost 270 members, including multiple groups such as Love Cambridge, Optimum and the First XV Young professionals Group, the role of Chamber CEO will have plenty to keep her busy. “It’s going to be really interesting to get my finger on the pulse and see how everyone is feeling about life,” Kelly said.

Sun welcome at cross country By Sophie Iremonger

Sunny weather came just in time for the Cambridge Combined Rural Schools Cross Country at Karapiro last week. Held at the Mighty River Domain on Friday, students from Karapiro, Kaipaki, Roto-o-Rangi, Te Miro and Horahora School raced junior and senior cross country courses in their respective age groups, traversing over hay bales, around cones and

uphill to the finish line. Organised this year by Karapiro School with the support of Project Energise and Sport Waikato, Karapiro principal Tina-Maree Thatcher said the day ran smoothly thanks to the help of principals and staff of participating schools, and everyone involved on the day. “We rely on the support of our schools and parents to run this event and we would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone

involved,” she said. “Congratulations to all students who excelled by beating their personal best and achieved placings…we know that cross country is a challenging event for some and I’d like to acknowledge the effort students put into participating on the day.” The top-placed students will return to the Karapiro domain this Friday for the Cambridge Schools Cross Country, forming a team to represent the local rural schools.

Quickfire News Elsie’s relatives located

Following an appeal in the Cambridge News, the great niece of Elsie Nixon has made contact the Cambridge Community Board. Community board member Sue Milner said Elsie’s great niece also has contacts for the wider family. “It’s great to know we will be able to have the Belgian Government’s Commemorations with family members present.” Elsie was one of 33 New Zealand women awarded the Queen Elisabeth medal for service to Belgium in World War I. The Belgian government will be commemorating this with a special plaque to mark the centenary of the end of the war in November.

Reds’ fan dies in Bali

Cambridge Reds fan Abby Hartley has died in Bali, six weeks after being hospitalised with a twisted bowel. Abby, whose son Toby plays for the Reds reserves, was on her second honeymoon with husband Richard when she fell ill, never waking from the induced coma doctors placed her in. With Cover More Travel Insurance refusing to pay out, saying the bowel issue was a pre-existing condition, the family began a Givealittle page to raise the money needed to get Abby back to New Zealand. The Government declined an appeal to step in to help the family, with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern saying that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade gets “several hundred” cases related to medical issues each year, with around 180 New Zealanders dying overseas and needing to be repatriated annually. Abby had received the all-clear to fly just days before her death and a $170,000 medical flight had been booked to bring her home. Her Abby Hartley (in red) with husband funeral will be Richard, left, and children Sophie and held next week. Toby. Photo from Facebook.

Schools raise hundreds on Daffodil Day

Pound Hounds pups of the month

Local schools got into the fundraising spirit for Daffodil Day on August 31 – the Cancer Society’s largest fundraising event of the year. “Young Vinnies” students at St Peter’s Catholic School organised a day of fun activities for their fellow pupils, including face painting, selling daffodils and special balloons, putting on a yellow mufti parade and giving prizes for the “yellowest” students – all culminating towards a massive fundraising total of $570. Kaipaki’s senior students did their bit for Daffodil Day too, independently organising a fundraiser as part of the school’s annual cross country. The day included a sponsored run, selling Cancer Society merchandise, original artwork and daffodils, and running a bake stall. Their efforts resulted in over

They hit over $1,000 for sick people across Waikato. They ran 30 laps around the school with sponsorship from parents from Kaipaki,” student Chloe Browne explained. “This year’s school cross country is probably the best one we’ve ever had, because of the supportive people and the good vibes Kaipaki School showed,” said Jasgin Lopena. “Everyone was cheering loud and proud to all the people that ran.” “It was furious, people running as fast as possible people cheering on others. Wow it was windy … people would’ve been getting blown away,” said Vinnie Proebstel.

Budding scientists impress at science fair

Science-minded students at St Peter’s School have wowed scientists with their project boards at the NIWA Waikato Science Fair on August 24. The local students won Best School, eight special prizes, and 32 commendations, with their project boards judged by PHD students and scientists. Teacher Alex Green said students were introduced to the science fair in mid-Term 1 and guided through to the end of Term 2 to get their project completed. “In terms of ideas, students were asked to think about their interests, whether it be a sport, food, or just things in their everyday life they had wondered about,” Alex said. For example, Year 8 student Connor Delaney studied kombucha and how leaving it for a long period would affect

the alcohol content in the drink due to fermentation. “He found the alcohol content exceeded that which is allowed to be sold to minors, when stored in certain conditions,” she said. Drinks must have less than 1.15 per cent ethanol content to be considered non-alcoholic which is why it is suggested that fermentation is stopped by storing kombucha in the fridge. Holly Christison, placed first for Best Year 11-13 and 2nd overall for Best in Fair with her project Sun-Shocked. Her project looked at the effect of solar radiation on the flow of a current in a wire. This gained her a work experience job at NIWA. Alice Duncan and Archie Davidson placed first and second respectively for the category Year 9 – 10 Living

She carried out a field study in the St Peter’s Kahikatea Stand as part of her project. Rebecca Foley placed first in Year 9 – 10 Planet Earth and Beyond, and Tallula Rainger won the Year 9-13 Observational Drawing for her bee picture. She also received the NZ Soil Science Society Special Award for an outstanding exhibit relating to soil science. Elizabeth Liu won the NIWA Special Award for an outstanding exhibit related to water and/or the

atmosphere. Laura Goodman and Maria Lee won the NZ Statistical Association Special Award for an outstanding exhibit that relates to conservation of NZ flora and fauna. Grace Wisnewski won the NZ Baking Research Trust Special Award for the best use of flour or baker products in a food-related product. Feature artist for September

Submitted by the Cambridge Society of Arts Once a month the Cambridge Society of Arts has a display of one of their artist’s work on ‘the wall’ at The Painting Place on Thornton Rd. The September feature artist is Julia Jeon. She writes: My name is Julia Jeon and I have been living in New Zealand for 12 years. During this time, painting has always been on my mind, so I can happily say that it’s a thrill to start again. I enjoyed art classes at school in South Korea, so I decided

to join Cambridge Society of Arts in July to paint full time. I take on a different style of art with acrylic paint, by expressing joy in hopes of invoking a sense of happiness in the viewers. Though it was my first time painting with acrylic, I was able to accomplish my work through the help of my seniors. I am passionate in creating art with new techniques and integrating my skills into my art. I hope to continue painting and progressing as an artist, to fulfil my long-awaited passion in painting.

New wheels for Achievement House By Neil Fynn, Achievement House manager (abridged) The ability to use or afford private or public transport is a major barrier for many people with a disability, with no Government funding for transport assistance for disabled people to access a day support programme such as Achievement House offers. Achievement House recognises this fact and the barrier it creates for many people, so continues to try to support the most in need to access its supports. Where once it had been able to provide a door-to-door transport service, Achievement House now runs just one passenger van from Hamilton Transport Depot to Cambridge, returning to Hamilton in the afternoon. This is offered to those who do not have family or service provider support, or they have put in a good deal of their own efforts into getting to and from the pick-up point. The time had come for Achievement House’s ageing van to be replaced and now with the generous support of community organisations and fundraising over the past year, it has purchased a new van to take them well into the future. The LDV V80 11-seater has been kindly funded by financial gifts from; Rodmor Charitable Trust, the Cambridge Christmas Festival Society, DV Bryant Trust, Grassroots Trust, Rotary Club of Cambridge, and Altrusa International Cambridge.

Cambridge Genealogy celebrates birthday By Nancy Cooke, convenor, Cambridge Genealogy branch of NZSG Family researchers attending the Cambridge Genealogy August meeting were impressed by the information presented by Cambridge resident and author, Mrs Meemee Phipps. The focus of her talk was the Chinese Labour Corp from New Zealand as they made their way to the WWI battlefield to assist the allies, the work they did and how they were treated. August was been designated Family History Month. It was also the birthday month of the group that has grown to be Cambridge Genealogy. To celebrate 40 years since the group’s beginning, an informal lunch was held recently, at the Health and Community Centre. The birthday cake was cut by three members of the original group. Those attending enjoyed reminiscing about past activities, including “floor meetings” where paper family trees were spread across the floor to be viewed and worked on by all present.

The purchase means Achievement House can continue to offer the freedom of access to many people who greatly require it. Achievement House offers part-time employment, volunteer and community participation opportunities to people with a disability. It aims to give people a place to be and a sense of purpose and achievement for enhanced self-esteem and add meaning to their week. The Minimum Wage Exemption Permit scheme, which is managed through the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, is typically utilised for those who are in paid work so that they can be employed and bring in some added income to supplement their benefit. Over its forty plus years of operation, Achievement House and its staff have become specialists and expert in the assembly, collation, labelling and packaging of small, lightweight components and has contracts with industry throughout the region. Anyone wanting quotes for work to be done or are interested in offering financial support or just wishing to learn more about Achievement House, its work and its history, are invited to contact the manager, Neil Fynn on 07 827 7441 / 027 440 1919.

Runner racing mountains By Sophie Iremonger

A Cambridge runner will represent New Zealand at the World Mountain Running Championships this weekend. Matt Scott, a 2015 St Peter’s graduate, was selected for the New Zealand team following his third-place finish at the national competition in March, joining

seven others on the New Zealand team. Racing on September 16 in Canillo, Andorra, the Kiwis will race a 12km course, starting at 1500m altitude and finishing at 2500m. “I’m super excited … running for New Zealand has been a long-term goal for me for a long time,” said Matt. “I’m over the moon to have the opportunity and it’s something many runners I know would love to have the opportunity to do.” Matt, almost 21, has put himself in the best form possible preparing for the event, utilizing the top-notch facilities at Lincoln University to prepare for the high-altitude exertion. With New Zealand’s accessible peaks paling in comparison to the European mountain he’ll race, Matt has undergone altitude training with Associate Professor Dr Mike Hamlin to help overcome the limited air and altitude sickness he could face on race day – training on a treadmill in the university’s sports science lab three times a week for the month leading up to his departure. “This simulates the altitude at or above the finish line, thus meaning on race day the altitude should have minimal effect on me and I shouldn’t see any of the effects of altitude sickness,” said Matt, adding that he ran Puigmal Mountain on the French/Spanish boarder on Saturday – which towers at 2900m – and “didn’t feel the altitude at all”.

First XV national champions

St Peter’s School’s First XV has successfully defended the National CoEd title – becoming the only team to win it back-to-back since St Kent’s in 2011 – after an emphatic victory over Rangiora High School 33 – 26 on the weekend. Andrew Viane scored the winning try with just five minutes remaining, smashing through the opposition’s last line of defence. St Peter’s was ahead 19 – 0 only 20 minutes into the game, with Cam

Roigard making swift and accurate passes. The boys celebrated their win with an emotional haka performance. Some tough games were played throughout the season, but that enabled the boys to show their technical ability, as well as their mental ability and character. Congratulations also to coaches Elliot Sharp and Sean Hohneck on a successful season.

International outing for CHS sevens team By coach Adin Wolfsbauer For the first time the Cambridge High School U15 sevens team travelled to Noumea, New Caledonia for an under 16s tournament. The July tournament combined U16 boys’ and under 19 girls’ teams from clubs and schools from Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, France, New Caledonia, Futuna and Wallis Islands. Losses against Futuna Island, New Caledonia, and France saw the CHS team compete in the plate semi-final game against Fiji, which they won convincingly. This got them into the plate final, where they played Futuna Island. The CHS team lost that game, finishing sixth in the tournament. “The team would like to thank all the parents involved with fundraising, the Cambridge community for buying our firewood, Cambridge Hire for the wood splitters, the Dromgool Family for the donated pine trees and Adam Thompson for the opportunity to plant native trees on his property. We appreciate your support to get us to Noumea for this fantastic opportunity,” said coach Adin Wolfsbauer.

The Cambridge High School team faced serious opposition in Noumea, finishing sixth in a sevens’ tournament in July.

Their opponents were one competitor down, so Mark Lane opted to shoot for the Taranaki team and wound up on the mostly-losing side as Waikato won the Master, A, B and D divisions but lost the C grade to Taranaki by two points. Waikato took home the winning trophy in what was a very successful competition for the team. The following Thursday, last week, more Cambridge shooters represented the Waikato, this time at the National Districts competition, having shot their way through a successful season to reach the final against Manawatu – their arch rivals. The Cambridge shooters included club president Glen Brownlee, Mark Land, Brad Pierce, Fiona Spence, and junior shooters Liam McDonald and Samuel Wilde. Liam shot a 99.6 and 96.4, while Julian Crab, a Tauranga shooter

Companies take up challenge This year’s BNZ Corporate Challenge at the Avantidrome will see 32 teams from 19 different organisations across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty competing, a mix of returning riders and a host of new recruits who have never ridden on the velodrome before. “That’s the beauty of the BNZ Corporate Challenge,” said Del Woodford, the Avantidrome’s programme and events manager. “You don’t have to be an experienced rider at all. Youngsters take two cup finals By Josh Easby

Junior football wrapped up for Cambridge over the weekend with five teams appearing in Waikato knockout finals. Playing at Hamilton’s Glenview Park, two of the Cambridge teams won their respective finals. Cambridge Victory won the 9th-grade boys’ final with a penalty shoot-out after they and Northern United could not be separated, finishing goalless after extra time. In the shoot-out, Toby Malligan saved the 9th penalty for Cambridge and then Mylo Maloney slotted the 10th penalty for a 2-1 win to Victory and their first win over a strong Northern side. The boys’ 12th grade final saw Cambridge Daredevils beat Hillcrest United Falcons 2-1. The Daredevils led most of the game going up 2-0 thanks to goals from Luke Philip and

Andrew Morkel before the Falcons scored late in normal time to set up a nervous last few minutes for the coach and supporters. The 10th grade boys’ final between Cambridge Valencia and Northern United Barcelona ended in 1 9-0 win for Barcelona. The Valencia boys deserved to make the final and never gave up but didn’t quite have the cohesiveness that the Barcelona team have developed after a few more years together. The boys 11th grade final saw Cambridge Barcelona go down 3-2 to Northern United Juventus for a rare loss over the last two seasons. The Barcelona team are playing up a grade this year and it has been a good season for Cambridge’s two top teams in the 11th grade, with Barcelona finishing first and the Clarets second in the championship round. Barcelona were down to a very early goal in the final and fought back well from eventually

being 3-0 down to get back to 3-2 but ran out of time to find an equaliser in normal time. In the girls U-10 final, the Cambridge Ferns went down to a solitary goal to Northern United Firebirds. Meanwhile, Cambridge women completed their season in the Waikato A League with a 2-1 loss at Matamata Swifts. Scorer for Cambridge was Maddy Burnett while the Hill Homes Player of the Day was Chrissy Goodin. Neither Rachel Hill

nor Astrid Howarth were able to score in the final game, meaning they shared the club’s women’s Golden Boot with 23 goals each for the season. Cambridge’s men’s Golden Boot went to Andrew Taylor who scored 25 goals in 2018, two more than nearest rival Peter Buesnel. The club will hold its Junior prizegiving awards on Monday, September 24 and its senior prizegiving awards on Saturday, September 29.

Trampers visit centenarian pine By Kay, Cambridge Tramping Club A group of 12 met at the Waikino Hall with our loyal guide Maggie who has a wealth of knowledge of the area. From Old Waitekauri Rd we followed part of the track to the popular strawberry trees. As the pine trees are currently being logged we were unable to follow the usual bush track all the way. A small detour took us up to view a grand old pine (pictured) which must be all of 100 years old. The original Waitekauri track goes through to the vicinity of the Paeroa Cemetery and it was via this track that machinery was conveyed to the mines. The old Maoriland Battery was closed down in 1945 and members of the Tauranga Rock and Mineral Club took it to pieces and reassembled it at the Tauranga Museum’s Historic Village. Despite the rain a most interesting day was enjoyed by all. The next tramp will be via the Pines to Aotea Beach and the surrounding area on Sunday, September 16, led by Helen. New Books

The Beauty Guide a real gem

Reviewed by Claire Robson Having been lucky enough to go to Dr Libby’s recent talk in Hamilton, I was keen to get my hands on her latest book – The Beauty Guide – the 12th of her books on offer. The Beauty Guide is an easy-to-read, one-stop-shop for women who want natural ways to stay looking younger for longer and who want to understand more about the role hormones play in general quality of life. She delves into the effects that chronic stress has on the body – think about all that fight-or-flight cortisol being released with nowhere to go, fuelled by caffeine and having to deal with that jerk at work – as well as the pivotal role the liver plays in our wellbeing. All good stuff. I found this book easy to read and highly informative, and I really liked the way it was formatted. It was possible to dip in and out of it, easily cherry-picking the sections most relevant at the time – there was no wading through content to find what I was interested in. There are no quick fixes here (sorry, vege-haters), but I liked the way Dr Libby was not all “finger-waggy” in her advice. She also goes into the emotional component of beauty in this book, which was a good reminder that our mental state can have a huge impact on our wellness. Overall, I found The Beauty Guide to be a good book for women who want to improve their quality of life, understand their bodies better and make some changes. Definitely worth checking out. From the Big Red Phone Box

Dead Famous

BY BEN ELTON

Reviewed by Claire Robson There’s always some good reading at the Cambridge Book Exchange in the red phone box on Empire Street. This week’s offering was Dead Famous, by comic mastermind Ben Elton. Ben Elton has contributed enormously to TV comedy, with credits including The Young Ones and Blackadder, and he brings this comedy to his writing. I remember enjoying his first book, Stark, enormously when it came out in 1989, so I had high hopes for this offering. And I was not disappointed, with a satisfying twist at the end making this book a whodunnit as well as funny. Published in 2001, this book came out just one year after the launch of the Big Brother franchise, which arguably was at the forefront of the tidal wave of reality television. Set along similar lines, there are 10 contestants living in the ‘Peeping Tom’ house. We know one has been murdered from the start, but it’s not until halfway through the book that we find out who it actually was. I liked that, and I also liked the way Ben Elton kept throwing out red herrings along the way before the surprise ending. It’s a funny, light offering that readers will be able to flick through pretty quickly. Thumbs up from me. If you would like to write a book review for the Cambridge Book Exchange on Empire St, please get in touch with Claire – claire@cambridgenews.nz – to discuss.

The Block NZ underwhelms Reviewed by Claire Robson

As we hurtle towards the end of another season of The Block NZ, it’s getting towards the pointy end of the competition at Hobsonville Point in Auckland. The kids and I watch it religiously, but I must admit that I’m getting a bit bored with the challenges, which I reckon take away from what the programme is all about – creating the best home to get the most money at auction. This season I’ve also been finding host Mark Richardson even more irritating than I usually do, but I’m not sure if that’s him being more annoying or me being less tolerant. The jury is out. I have enjoyed the styling genius of The Block’s oldest ever competitors, Amy and Stu (let’s face it, it’s really just Amy doing the styling), who have managed to produce some beautiful spaces, but overall I just don’t think the “wow factor” of the finished product is quite up there with the Aussie version of The Block,

as much as it pains me to say that. It’s just not. But we will persevere to the end, when I will no doubt wonder why we didn’t just watch the auction and skip all the other hoo-ha. It’s a good show to put on while you’re cooking the dinner though, and the kids are right behind the boys’ team of Ben and Tom and the girls’ team of Chloe and Em, respectively. It will be interesting to see if anyone walks away with no money, which has happened in the past - we will find out when the grand finale airs in a few weeks. The Block, (times and dates) TV3, Sundays at 7pm, Monday- Wednesday at 7.30pm.

What’s on the (paid-for) telly… Reviewed by Claire Robson I don’t know what rock I was living under back in 2009 when the TV series Parks and Recreation came out, but I have been binge-watching it on Lightbox lately and I absolutely love it. So far, I am up to the end of season four out of seven (because I have to come to work), set at the Parks Department of the fictional Indiana town of Pawnee. This political satire is laughout-loud funny and in parts quite brilliant– a bit like The Office (UK version), without being as excruciating to watch. There isn’t one character in this show that I don’t adore, but my favourite would have to be the enigmatic Ron Swanson, whose objective appears to be to bring the government down from the inside. The acting

by Nick Offerman as Ron is outstanding, and I have really been enjoying watching his character develop over the ridiculous number of hours I have watched in a shamefully short time. It’s a feel-good show, and Amy Pohler has done a great job of sharpening up the character of Leslie Knope, who started out being a bit of an airhead in the first season. If you haven’t seen Parks and Recreation, you can catch all seven seasons of it on Lightbox, just make sure you remember to go to work in between all that. And keep an eye out for the murals on the walls of the Pawnee Council offices, and the rivalry between Pawnee and rich neighbours Eagleton. Hilarious.

Cambridge eventing champion Sir Mark Todd finished up last week at the Burghley Horse Trials in the UK in 18th place on 49.6, rounding off a weekend that didn’t quite go his way. “He jumped a really nice round,” he said of his horse NZB Campino after the final showjumping round on September 3. “Unfortunately we had just one down. It has been a bit like that all week with him – nearly but not quite in all three phases.”

Excellent. One out-ofthe-box. You’ve never seen anything like this before. It gradually becomes very intense. We thoroughly recommend this for a great mystery-to-solve story. No one is lost without a trace. Where did Margot go? After David Kim (John Cho)'s 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a local investigation is opened and a detective is assigned to the case. But 37 hours later and without a single lead, David decides to search the one place no one has looked yet, where all secrets are kept today: his daughter's laptop. In a hyper-modern thriller told via the technology devices we use every day to communicate, David must trace his daughter's digital footprints before she disappears forever. High voltage tension.
