Waka Ama thrills crowds

Photo - Michael Jeans By Sophie Iremonger

AKE KARAPIRO IS A HIVE OF activity this week as over 3300 paddlers take to the water in the 29th annual National Waka Ama Sprint Championships. The action kicked off on Monday and will continue through to the end of Saturday, with over 1700 teams from 61

clubs competing for national sprint titles across 10 age divisions. With competitors ranging from 5 years old to almost 80, a huge contingent of family and support crews are in town to cheer on their paddlers, with an estimated 10,000 spectators at the event across the week. Waka Ama New Zealand CEO Lara Collins was rapt to have such a broad

range of competitors taking part. “That’s what makes the event quite special, because it’s families all enjoying an event together, a lot of multiple generations in the same families racing, so it’s really cool.” Races kick off at 8am each day this week, concluding around 4pm on Saturday followed by a prizegiving and afterparty.

Vandals strike town

Cambridge newsroom update It’s been all go on the sporting front in Cambridge this week, with beach volleyball and the Waka Ama Sprint Nationals at Karapiro, proving once again how lucky we are to have the lake right on our doorstep. It’s been business as usual here in the swivelly chair this week, with plenty of local news to keep us busy in the newsroom. We live and breathe Cambridge, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. As I write this, it looks like the plastic is finally starting to come off the building over the road at 60 Victoria St, so it will be exciting to finally get rid of the white shroud that has been looming large over the main street. I’m sure the building’s owners and tenants will also be pleased with the progress, and the fact that the building is now water-tight. Always a good quality in a building. This week, we have a new monthly gardening column courtesy of Amber Nurseries. I, for one, am thrilled at this development, as anyone who has seen my woeful excuse of a garden will understand (column is on page 10). Even those of us who are gardening-averse can take heart from Pauline’s advice and get stuck in. As long as you don’t use your sprinkler, because we are still on Level 3 water restrictions. Have a great week, everyone. Claire Castle, Editor

Parking squeeze Quickfire News hits Cambridge Stage Challenge and J Rock axed

By Claire Castle

Over Christmas, parking was once again at a premium in Cambridge, with the town bulging at the seams with shoppers keen to find a space. The Cambridge

Chamber of Commerce met with the Waipa District Council late last year to discuss “quick wins” – improvements that can will a tangible difference without incurring much cost. As a result, minor

adjustments have been made in Queen St between Victoria and Bryce Sts, where new markings have been put in. Council said they are also working with the chamber to identify other places where parking markings could be improved, including Alpha St, between Empire and Anzac Sts. By painting proper parking spaces onto previously unpainted stretches of road, it is hoped that drivers will park within the lines which will allow more vehicles to park there. Cambridge Chamber of Commerce CEO, Tania Witheford, said that better signposting of public carparking, including the parking area on Milicich Place, would also help ease the pressure on parking in the CBD. Ms Witheford also said the chamber hoped that businesses in town would encourage staff to look at parking that would not impact on the availability of spaces on Victoria St. Any campaign to change driver behaviour would need to be friendly rather than punitive, she said. “Just a little reminder of where the long-term parking is.” Contrary to popular belief, there have been tickets issued in Cambridge, but council said it’s not something they are keen on spending money on. “We’d rather not have to use council resources – funded by ratepayers – to ticket

School performance competitions Stage Challenge and J Rock have been cancelled due to economic conditions and rising production costs, organisers said. Running since 1992, Stage Challenge has seen hundreds of Cambridge high school-aged students take part. J Rock, for primary school-aged students, has also given Cambridge students the opportunity to show off their skills. Organisers estimated that more than 500,000 students have participated in the competitions over its 25-year history.

people. We’d far rather people took note of the signage and moved their cars so other drivers can also use those parks,” council’s roading corridor manager, Bryan Hudson said. Mr Hudson said that sensors installed on the main street in 2013 have been collecting information to give a picture of parking in Cambridge, or to verify complaints from customers. Council have also previously provided that data to the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce. “We acknowledge the concerns of the Cambridge Chamber around parking and we’ve included funding in Council’s draft 10-Year Plan to work with Chambers of Commerce, and the wider community, to create parking strategies for both Cambridge and Te Awamutu. Mr Hudson said the strategy would consider a range of issues including best use of technology as well as enforcement. That strategy would kick off in July, pending budget sign-off in June, he added.

Lilies can kill cats

* * * *

Cat owners are being warned to keep their pets away from lilies, as ingesting petals, leaves or even pollen can be fatal to felines. Tiger lilies, day lilies, Christmas lilies and Asiatic hybrids are among the plants that are poisonous to cats. A woman in Christchurch recently lost two cats to lily poisoning, after the pets ingested pollen from lilies in the garden and suffered from kidney failure. It is believed that the cats were sleeping near the lilies and the pollen was blown onto their coats. They licked it off and died a few days later. * * * *

The Waterboy needs your help By Claire Castle

This year is shaping up as another big one for the Waterboy, a charity organisation that has its roots in Cambridge. Thomas Nabbs started the initiative here and he is keen to get more local businesses on the Waterboy team, helping people get into sport. With a strong belief that every Kiwi deserves a chance to participate in sport, Thomas is seeking sponsors to make that a reality for people where money has been a barrier to taking part. The first sponsored outing was in 2016, when they partnered with Cambridge businesses to get kids at Leamington School the subscriptions and uniforms they needed to play winter sport. One of the foundation sponsors of that first project was Five Stags in Leamington, and general manager Matt Palmer said they were happy to continue their support. “We’re a community-based business, so anything that is going to support the local community was something we were going

to be 100 per cent supportive of,” he said. Among all the projects coming up, Thomas also has a coffee table book about the Waterboy in the pipeline, More than a Game, which is due out in March. Because they are a charity, the Waterboy is looking for pre-orders of the book to get it off the ground. Featuring nine of the Waterboy’s favourite initiatives, More than a Game will also include a selection of New Zealand sportspeople talking about how sport has changed their lives. Silver Fern netball captain Casey Kopua is on board, as well as international cricketer Tim Southee, joining other sportspeople keen to contribute. Sport has obviously played a massive part in their lives, but it is also something that Thomas said builds skills, wellbeing and pride. Something everyone, regardless of finances, could do with more of. For more information about the book and how to get involved with the Waterboy, visit www. thewaterboy.org.nz or find them on Facebook. St Andrews Craft Fair next weekend

Last year’s St Andrews Craft Fair saw a huge turnout of both stalls and shoppers. The biannual St Andrews Giant Craft & Collectable Fair returns for 2018 during the upcoming long weekend - on Auckland Anniversary Day, Monday January 29. Admission is free, open to all ages, with around 100 stall holders from around the country showcasing their goods.

The iconic fair has been held in Cambridge twice a year – on Anniversary Day and Labour Day – since 1996, on the grounds of St Andrews Church. All stall fees go back to the church for the upkeep of the building which was constructed in 1881. On the day, the six bells which have been in the

Ten thousand in town for Waka Ama Continued from front page was really all about having fun. “We’re just happy, the kids are happy, we have no idea where we came in the final but really it’s just about having fun, they made the champ finals so it was really cool just to be in there, they’re quite happy with that.” Hamilton crew Te Toki Raiatea, a six-woman paddling team from the Te Toki Voyaging Trust, were all smiles as they headed into their first race of the competition on Tuesday. Makayla Neil, competing in her 6th consecutive year, said it seemed like there were even more people at the event this time around. “There are more teams this year, more

competition, a lot more than last year,” she said. “It makes us more competitive. We’re still here to have a good time, but it’s even more fun to win.” “Waka Ama is probably the only sport where grandmothers, grandfathers, mums, dads and their kids can come together to race competitively,” said Lara Collins. “It’s a sport for all sorts of people from all walks of life. This week 2100 of the paddlers are under the age of 19 and 1200 of those are aged under 13. “That’s what makes it so special and unique– it’s very competitive but the focus is on fun and whānau too.” For the full racing schedule visit www.wakaama.co.nz.

Waka Ama quite a sight to see By Sophie Iremonger

Waka Ama New Zealand CEO Lara Collins said the event would continue through the rain.

The Inter Women’s W2 500 heat proved to be a tightly contested race.

Wow – what an experience at the Waka Ama National Sprint Champs this week! It’s quite a sight to see so many people at the lake and on the water paddling their way to national titles. What I love about this competition compared with other sporting events at the lake, is that competitors come from all walks of life, all ages and backgrounds. The youngest competitor just turned five in November, and the oldest will turn 80 this year – so it’s quite a far cry from watching elite athletes compete. But that’s what makes it so much better, the paddlers are mostly just regular people like you and me, made up of all shapes and sizes with all sorts of fitness levels, proving that they’ve got the guts to get on the water in front of thousands of spectators to compete against clubs from around the country and the Pacific Islands. I was lucky enough to watch the action not only from the lake shore, but from on the water itself. I’d like to say a big thank you to the event organisers for allowing Michael Jeans and I to get out on one of the support boats and check out the action up close. It was amazing to race alongside the paddlers as they powered their way through the water. I hope we didn’t put them off as we rode parallel with their boats, but they didn’t seem to be

bothered at all, as all their focus was directed towards the finish line. It was certainly an inspiring sight, and lots of fun indeed. I’d encourage locals to pop out to the lake this week and check out the action, perhaps you might be inspired to take up the sport too, as these paddlers prove that anyone can give it a go.

BUSINESS COURSES PUT KARĀPIRO CAFÉ OWNERS ON PODIUM Even on the worst days, turning up to work at the Podium Café overlooking Lake Karāpiro is “something special” say owners Kim Lee and Ali Foers. Podium Café, based at the Lake Karāpiro Domain, is the third business initiative for the pair which started with a professional catering company Gourmet Delicious in 2006 and popular café Suburban Kitchen in Cambridge in 2015. However, launching Podium Café has been the most challenging. They navigated the resource consent and building process and had to design a café that would fit in with the environment and other buildings like the impressive Sir Don Rowlands Rowing Centre at the domain.

“We’ve invested a lot of time and money, and we’re very proud of what we have achieved,” says Kim. “It’s a lovely place to be. There’s always something going on at the lake. Even on a horrible day their is something appealing about the lake and the white caps.” Kim and Ali are proud graduates of the Small Business Management (CSBM) and Applied Business Growth programmes delivered by Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. “We loved our course. Through Te Wānanga Aotearoa we gained confidence in our ability to make informed decisions,” says Kim. In 2014 they enrolled in the CSBM course, and it was here that their direction started to develop as they focused working on their business rather in it, which they admit was both exciting and scary. The pair say tutor Rosalie Lunson was a mine of information and the people they met were inspiring. “Having both of us on the same page attending the course made a difference,” says Ali. “We started looking at each step of the detailed business plan

we were developing and to hear other individuals going through the same highs and lows, we all could relate.” Patronage has grown beyond expectations since Podium Café opened last September as word of the Lake Karāpiro café, which is open seven days a week , has spread. The cedar wood building has indoor and outdoor dining options and also has a liquor licence. The name Podium originated from a desire to represent all sporting endeavours that attract people to Lake Karāpiro, not just rowing, for which it is internationally renowned. “We didn’t want to associate the café with just one sport, there are many other water sports out here and cycling. We thought Podium fitted fairly well.” After working the busy Christmas holiday period, Kim and Ali are taking a few days off, their first break from their business interests since 2016, but will be back at the Podium Café for the 2018 Te Wānanga o Aotearoa Waka Ama Sprint Nationals this week.

STUDENTS GET CREDITS Secondary school students will be able to convert their passion for Waka Ama into NCEA credits this year. Two Level 2 Waka Ama unit standards developed by Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, Waka Ama New Zealand and Skills Active Aotearoa have been officially registered on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework. Te Wānanga o Aotearoa Programme Developer Lynne Nuttall said she was delighted the Waka Ama unit standards had been registered on the NZQA Framework after a couple of years work behind the scenes. “Secondary school students do a huge amount of work preparing for the national secondary competition, they do hours and hours on the water for weeks and weeks and now they can get up to 18 credits for NCEA.” The units involve demonstrating and describing Waka Ama paddling and safety skills as well as capsize drills, which combined are worth 18 credits. The two Level 2 Unit standards will sit in the newly created Waka Ama domain on the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) Framework.

ARSON ATTACK CAN’T STOP TUAKAU PADDLERS Two loan waka from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa helped these young paddlers make it to the National Champs. On a hot summer afternoon beside the Waikato River at Tuakau, a dozen young kids are playing in the water before being called ashore and formed into a circle. Lifejackets on and paddles in hand, they do a few quick warm-up exercises, perform a karakia then help carry two waka - Rehumoana and Rehutai - down the gentle slope and into the water. Within minutes, they’re away, paddlng in unison downstream before turning around a river marker and heading back upstream against the current. It’s one of their last training sessions before the Te Wānanga o Aotearoa National Waka Ama Sprint Champs, that started at Lake Karāpiro on January 15. That the youngsters are able to compete this week is remarkable, given their club was the victim of an arson attack last year.

The club, Waka Tangata o Te Awhinamai Te Toki ki Tuakau, lost its three waka to a suspicious fire in early November – a key period when the paddlers were beginning their training for the national champs. Club president Rosalie Ellis says thanks to two waka Te Wānanga o Aotearoa loaned the club along with two others from parent club Te Toki Voyaging Trust paddlers were able to maintain their training schedule largely uninterrupted. “There was no break in training, they were able to continue on through so they’ve got no excuses,” she says. However, the attack on the treasured waka “hit the club hard”. “I just couldn’t believe it. I’m not sure what they were trying to achieve, but one thing is for sure, they have really hurt our kids.”

Get out on the water Take up your paddle and join our motivated whānau

Enrol now twoa.ac.nz | 0800 355 553

Te Wānanga o Aotearoa chief executive Dr Jim Mather says it was an easy decision to provide the waka to the club in its time of need.

it’s great the club members have been able to keep training and we’re looking forward to seeing them where they should be - on the water - during the week.”

“Waka ama provides massive benefits for paddlers and helps bring communities together so anything we can do to support that is well worthwhile,” he says.

The club is fielding about a dozen teams at the national champs, from midgets through to masters, and while Rosalie says it’s about taking part and supporting each other rather than winning, she’s hopeful of some good results.

“This would have been a devastating experience for everyone in the community but

Following the arson attack, a givealittle page raised more than $7000 for the club and a Waikato District Council staff fundraiser boosted this by a further $1600. But with a new waka costing about $15,000, fundraising continues. But not this week, where the focus will be on the racing and the whānaungatanga (relationships ) that comes at one of the biggest sporting events being held in the region, with more than 3000 paddlers taking part.

Letters to the Editor Get gardening Parking

Much of the parking problem in Cambridge is caused by the attitude of many thoughtless employees wanting to park all day as close to their workplace as possible, to the detriment of the shopper. To park and then walk a block or two, doesn’t seem to be in their mindset. Perhaps council could also re-evaluate the poorly designed Wilson St. At the same time, maybe also reduce some of the 13 to 14-metre yellow lines, at the point of entry and exit of its own premises – there is enough room at just those points for another four car parks in the street! It would also be interesting to know where the money is, that Council collects as a result of 'cash in lieu' from new developments being unable to provide the required number of car parks of their own. Is the money being put in reserve for a multi-story car park development, or similar, or consolidated revenue? Bruce Langridge

Council response from Bryan Hudson, road corridor manager We are taking a closer look at how the car park is used in front of the library to see if we could make this easier for users. Following a review of the Wilson St carpark in late2017 some minor changes are to be made to allow an extra carpark to be installed. We are limited with space in this area as we need to allow enough room for those entering and exiting the carpark to see approaching traffic on what is a very busy street. Cash in lieu payments from new developments contribute to development of parking in our towns. The majority of the funds collected in the past five years went toward the upgrade of the Milicich Place car park. * * * *

Grantham, Gordon QSM Diana, Rebecca, Amanda and Emma would like to thank Cambridge Police, Cambridge Volunteer Fire Brigade and the wider Cambridge and Police Community for the support, flowers, baking and cards we have received following Gordon’s passing. Gordon would have been honoured and humbled by the support shown to us all. Thank you seems such a small word, it is the least we can say from the bottom of our hearts for your support and kind thoughts. Gordon was taken too soon and will be missed as a soulmate, father, Poppa, brother, friend and colleague. Diana Grantham

January is time to enjoy the fruits of your labour. If you can, make sure you harvest vegetables every day to encourage more. Remember we are at water restriction level three, so it’s handheld watering only, no sprinklers. Flowers Dead head your flowers and fertilise to encourage repeat flowering – use a liquid organic seaweed plant tonic. You can plant summer annuals, but they will need regular watering to get them established. Apply compost to soil before planting to help retain moisture. If you are applying mulch, make sure you apply it to wet soil to conserve the moisture. Roses Dead head your roses and fertilise with a specialised rose fertiliser or sheep pellets to encourage healthy flowers in about six weeks’ time. Spray plants with a combination fungiside/insecticide, and be on the lookout for red spider mite with all this hot, dry weather. Roses require deep watering in hot areas. Other top tips Prune your peaches, plums and nectarines after harvest, make sure it’s on a dry day. This should limit the spread of disease and fungal spores. Cut on an angle using clean secateurs, above a bud or a branch, not below. Better to prune lightly rather than be too aggressive. Make sure your tomato plants are well-staked. They need support to carry the weight off the fruit. And pinch of the laterals to keep the plant easier to stake and control, as well as helping it produce larger tomatoes. Make sure you remove any yellow leaves to keep the plants healthy. Plant a succession of lettuce plants so you have a continuous supply for those summer salads, and if you are planting beetroot or brassicas (such as broccoli), cover the plants with a fine net to deter white butterfly caterpillars. Happy gardening, everyone!

Community working bee This Sunday from 8am supporters of the Cambridge Community Garden will hold a New Year working bee and hope to see members of the community turn out to help. “This is our first working bee for 2018, and we’re seeking help

from the Cambridge community,” said Aaron Ure, coordinator of the gardens. “We want to continue clearing the last of a large bamboo area that we have been progressively removing in the last year, so a couple of chainsaws would be really useful, plus folks to

paint the fresh cut stumps and clear out the stalks as needed.” Aaron said they also hope to paint the new tool shed, Bunnings have supplied paint and brushes at no cost which is fantastic. “It’s so indicative of the community participation

Roadtripping across the USA Experts say that one way of taking some of the pain out of returning from your Christmas holiday is to start planning the next one. Claire Castle talked with Cambridge Homes director Phil Webb, who had

plenty of inspiration for those wanting to hit the road… Motorbike enthusiast Phil grew up around bikes, buying and fixing up broken-down farm bikes as a boy, and the love affair has endured. At the

end of August last year, Phil and his wife Liz headed off to the US for a month-long trip around the South on a Harley Davidson – the stuff many bucket lists are made of. The trip was a sequel for the

Webbs, who rode the iconic Route 66 on a five-week bike tour back in 2015. One of the highlights of that first trip, Phil said, was attending the annual Harley Davidson rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. With between 1.8 and 1.9 million bikes descending on the small South Dakota town, it was a feat of organisational brilliance that has left a lasting impression on Phil with both memories and his first and only tattoo to commemorate the experience. He bought a badge at the event which was marking its 75th anniversary, where he and Liz shared a campground with around 800,000 other Harley fans, bringing it back to Cambridge where it was immortalised on his right shoulder. That first trip was prompted by Phil’s brother Mike’s diagnosis with a brain tumour, and the realisation that life is too short to put dreams on hold. “I was sitting with him (Mike) one night and he said ‘don’t be mad, look at me…I’m not going to make old bones’… So, I came home that night and booked the trip,” he said. That was back in 2014 and sadly Mike died in August of that year. The following year, Phil and Liz headed off on that trip

of a lifetime to Sturgis and Route 66. This time around, the Webbs went to the Daytona Harley rally – no tattoo from this one, and they stayed in a hotel, not a campground. A group of 22 riders were on this tour, hand-picked by the Kiwi tour organisers who were confident the personalities would gel. They were right, Phil said, and the group got along like a house on fire. Good thing, too, considering they had to spend a month together. “Getting on is crucial,” Phil explained, “you’ve got to ride together and if a bike breaks down everybody’s got to be prepared to just wait…no one gets upset, it’s just part of biking.” After flying into Los Angeles, the group flew to Chicago for a few days and got to check out the Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, the birthplace of the bike brand. “That was a fantastic display, just incredible,” Phil said. From there, it was down to Miami where the group hired bikes – trikes for Phil and Liz, and another rider on the tour – before they headed off. The riders left Miami in the middle of a torrential downpour, Continued next page

Norfolk Pine (Araucaria heterophylla/excelsa) This is the beauty of the Araucaria family, a group of trees that encircle the Pacific Ocean; they include 13 different Pacific island members of the genus, as well as the Chilean monkey puzzle, the Queensland bunya bunya pine, the Chinese and Japanese Cryptomerias, and several Tasmanian species, all of which are genealogically related to the giant sequoia of the western USA! All of them share a somewhat reptilian appearance with their bright green scaly leaves. Standing alone in a garden these sorts of trees often look stiff and out of place, whereas planted in clumps (or in their naturally occurring forests) they are magnificent. The monkey puzzle was for a time the darling of late Victorian England where it was often combined with ‘bogus-rustic arbours and geometrical beds of scarlet salvias.’ At much the same time in the USA, Brazil, Peru, and British colonies of the south Pacific the Norfolk pine, growing with the ‘hypnotic symmetry of a paper cut-out,’ was a favourite for the regimented planting of coastal esplanades. In New Zealand Napier’s Marine Parade comes to mind and in Australia there is a magnificent example many kilometres long in the southwest town of Esperance. In less friendly climes it is grown as a house plant. Few of the Araucaria family produce useful wood with the exception of the Brazilian Pirana pine, which makes excellent fine-textured timber for interior joinery and furniture. The Norfolk pine is good for woodturning and plywood. In 1774 when Captain Cook first saw the stands of Norfolk pine forest he hoped that it would be the answer

to the British navy’s insatiable need for masts and spars. During the 17th and 18th centuries a cardinal point of British foreign policy was the expensive business of keeping the Baltic Sea open for the timber trade; an act was passed in 1704 to encourage the colonial trade in spars to make England independent of the Baltic. However it was soon found that Norfolk pine was not sufficiently resilient for the purpose, although our New Zealand kauri proved (unfortunately) to be a good candidate.

riding out in the 5pm traffic. Being on the other side of the road to New Zealand isn’t too bad on a bike, Phil explained, because there’s no steering wheel on the wrong side to confuse the brain. Arriving just in time to see the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey – one of the costliest tropical cyclones on record, inflicting around US $125 billion in damage – Phil said the ride down to the Florida Keys was a real eye-opener. There was rubbish piled two-stories high along the side of the highway, he said, and it went on for miles and miles. “There were five-wheel caravans lying on their sides and jet skis by the dozens piled up,” he said, adding that the clean up operation was in full swing when they rode through. From Key Largo to Key West, it was up to Naples in Florida, which Phil said was a very pretty little place, where they stopped for some running repairs on a couple of the bikes. With the news that Hurricane Irma, a Category 4 hurricane, was imminent, the main group of riders set off for Spring Hill in Florida, trying to stay ahead of the weather while three riders stayed behind for repairs. Phil and Liz were just heading out of town when they had to turn back, thanks to a blown water pump. Once the

2

bikes were fixed, it was a scramble to re-join the group ahead of Irma – a 340-mile ride to their destination. Travelling between 75 – 100 miles per hour, the group made it at 9.30pm, just ahead of the powerful hurricane. That amount of riding does not make for a relaxing trip for the rider, Phil explained, due to all the concentration required. He was full of praise for the roads they travelled on though, which he said even at their worst were better than State Highway 1 here. Likewise, he admired the American drivers, who he said were “50 times more courteous than they are here.” Taking a month to explore the South, this trip was quite different to Route 66, Phil said, with the joy being mostly in the destination towns and cities rather than the scenery along the way. With the Grand Canyon, deserts and spectacular countryside it would be hard to top the 2015 excursion, and Phil said some of the scenery this time around was pretty similar to New Zealand. “It was a totally different trip,” he said. They had some wonderful moments, including getting to try genuine moonshine in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. “We had three jars of moonshine…which was great,” Phil laughed, although he might

Devastation from Hurricane Harvey was still evident as they rode through Florida.

A lot of the scenery was similar to NZ in the south, but the roads were better. not have been completely sure about the last jar. There were a couple of places they rode through where it seemed like the residents had walked straight out of Deliverance, the 1972 movie that catapulted backwoods locals into the collective consciousness, but the group was fine, and Phil said that the people they met along with way “couldn’t have been nicer”. In constant contact with each other using a Bluetooth intercom in their helmets, the couple shared the experience and combined with Liz’s photos taken from the back, they created memories to last a lifetime. On the first trip, Liz came back with around 4,000 photos on her camera – thank goodness for digital photos – but this time she only took around 3,000. As for planning another trip, Phil said he’s done his dash with bike tours, but Liz might have something to say about that, having her heart set on travelling in Europe. It remains to be seen how many photos she’ll get from that trip, and whether or not Phil will mark the road trip with another tattoo.

Scorcher for beach volleyball open Supplied The competition was as fierce as the summer conditions at last weekend’s Waikato Beach Volleyball Open, the second event in the Volleyball New Zealand National Beach Tour. The tournament ran over two days with the Lake Karapiro Beach Volleyball Centre hosting top domestic players including recently crowned national champions Rene Kapa and Morgan Seymour, as well as a number of international players from Denmark, the United States of America, Guam, the Cook Islands, Fiji and Spain. New Zealand women’s senior representatives Julia Tilley and Alice Bain took the women’s title, winning the final in straight sets against Danielle Quigley and Melissa Ruru. Play was tight in the first set with Tilley and Bain snatching a 21-18 win, however Quigley and Ruru couldn’t match their unrelenting opponents in the second set, with Tilley and Bain confirming their title victory with a 21-14 win. National Champions Rene Kapa and Morgan Seymour also took the men’s top spot in straight sets against Daryl Lewis and Giffin Muller. Kapa and Seymour found their groove midway through the first set, winning with 21-16. The second set featured some impressive cat and mouse plays, but Kapa and Seymour proved dominant with a 21-13 victory to clinch the men’s title. The men’s Commonwealth Games trial also concluded, with Bay of Plenty brothers Ben and Sam O’Dea rising to the top of the table after knocking out Mike Watson and Tom Hartles in a sudden death match. The O’Deas will now be officially nominated for selection to the New Zealand Olympic Committee to decide whether they will be New

Cambridge rider Rico D’Anvers finished second in the men’s junior elite national final behind Hamiltonian Cailen Calkin. Te Awamutu rider Cody Hobbs took victory in the elite men’s final, requiring a photo finish to determine his win from defending champion and Rio Olympian Trent Jones. The National Champs and South Island Champs were held at the same event, and a number of Cambridge riders made the finals of their respective divisions of the South Island Champs: Ronan Millar (2nd), Kobi Russell (3rd), Tia Hastings-Thurgood (3rd), Kayleigh Millar (5th), Dallas Douglas (6th), and Kaylah Nelson (8th). Brock Nelson and Zac Kershaw also made it through to their semi-final rounds. Officials had worked overtime to prepare the Christchurch City track on Saturday after wet weather ruled out racing until late in the afternoon, even calling in a helicopter to help with the drying process.

Coopers a labour of love By Claire Castle

After a hiatus while the property was on the market, business is booming for Mystery Creek wedding venue, Coopers. At the helm since June last year is local Sonya Anderson, and her husband Darryl. It was a chance remark over coffee with Sam Ward, the daughter of one of Coopers’ owners, that took the couple in this direction, and Sonya said she couldn’t be happier. They lead a busy life – Darryl is a presenter on the racing programme TAB Trackside, and Sonya provides communications and marketing for a top horse trainer, and they are the parents of Jack, 10 – but somehow it just works. Interest in Coopers has been steadily growing, Sonya said. “We just can’t believe the response since we started advertising again.” Sonya handles everything from the first appointment through to the end of the night clean up. The former

event manager from Mystery Creek is clearly in her element, thriving on the planning and the opportunity to help someone with what’s often the biggest day of their lives. “What a special thing, to be given this part of the happy day…you almost become part of the family.” And the emotion couples experience on their wedding day appears to be slightly contagious, with Sonya getting a wee bit teary when she talks about seeing the reaction of the groom the first time he sees his bride. “It just gets me every time,” she laughed. Looking out over the Waikato River from the venue’s balcony, it’s easy to see why it’s popular. People get married on the deck, on the Coopers’ steps or one of the lawns, Sonya said, adding that the lawn seems to be the most popular choice. In the winter, couples often opt for a backdrop of the enormous schist fireplace, she added. And for the bride, there’s even

a special luxury dressing room for her to get ready in, complete with

couches for the bridal party to relax on. It even has a wine fridge.

Sir Don Rowlands Centre

Stunning lake views makes Waipa’s event, function and conference centre a venue like no other. Site manager Liz Stolwyk says ‘the Sir Don Rowlands Centre offers guests a truly unique environment in which to host meetings, conferences, weddings or Christmas parties -the views are incredible and guests automatically relax when they arrive.’ With the choice of 3 conference rooms the Sir Don Rowlands Centre can offer space to suit 10 – 1000 people. The upstairs ‘Karapiro room’ is a very popular option as it has a beautiful deck outside with complimentary data projector facilities. Also the main hall has hosted numerous Christmas parties and awards dinners – and with the spectacular view minimal decoration is required. Located at Mighty River Domain the venue is set in spacious grounds providing ample parking and space for outdoor events too. Whilst many people are aware of the number of sporting events held at the domain, Liz says that the centre is available for other recreational functions and corporate events too. Flexible catering options are available with a commercial kitchen on-site. Located just 7 kilometres from central Cambridge, minutes from SH1, the venue is perfect for everything from intimate get-togethers to large scale events, banquet and awards dinners.

Second for Ross at Ruapuna

Halberg finalists announced

Finalists of the 55th annual Halberg Awards, which honour and celebrate New Zealand sporting achievements, were announced last week with Cambridge resident and 2017 St Peter’s School graduate Ellesse Andrews making the shortlist for the Emerging Talent Award. The award recognises young athletes who have made great achievements in 2017. Andrews has been recognised for her fantastic success at the UCI Junior Track World Championships in August, where she won the individual pursuit and set a new world record. * * * *

Equestrian takes silver

Matangi equestrian rider Clarke Johnstone finished in second place riding aboard Quainton Labyrinth in the FEI World Cup NZ League Final on Monday. Ten started the class, riding over a tough Gerrit Beker-designed course. Another well-known local rider, six-time series winner Katie Laurie, who flew in from Australia to compete in the final, retired after horse Breeze refused the first fence. “She just didn’t want to jump today,” said Laurie. “It is a bit disappointing.” In the series final, Te Awamutu’s Emily Hayward finished third aboard AP Ninja * * * *

Caricature wins at Matamata

Cambridge-trained racehorse Caricature won at the Matamata races last Friday. Trained by Tony Pike, it was her second appearance following a debut fourth, finishing in a successful first place in the Stable Books Maiden (1600m) in the hands of jockey Leith Innes. The daughter of Power, Caricature was a $380,000 Karaka purchase out of the 2017 draft of Cambridge Stud, who will offer her yearling half-brother (Lot 441) during the Book 1 Sale on January 28. * * * *

Nick Ross finished second overall at Ruapuna in his Total Lubricants Nissan Altima. Supplied Cambridge’s Nick Ross has come away from the third round of the BNT V8s at Ruapuna near Christchurch second for the weekend. Qualifying third on Saturday, Ross went on to race in the searing heat taking his Total Lubricants Nissan Altima to two second placings and a third in the weekend’s three races. In the weekend’s first encounter, Ross crossed the finish line in third place, however post-race, the officials deemed that the winner Andre Heimgartner jumped the start and thus was handed a 10-second penalty. This then handed the race win to Jason Bargwanna and elevated Nick into second place. “The car had really good pace in the first race. We made a change on Saturday night to the car to try find a bit more rear end grip, but ended up going too far with the set-up and it wasn’t as good. We dialled it back for the last race and the car was mint, even on old,old tyres we were still keeping the pace up at the front,” said Ross. With action aplenty on track

throughout the weekend, a number of times Ross found himself in the box seat to capitalise on other people’s mistakes. “The races were really exciting and there was lots of stuff happening. A couple of times we were able to capitalise on the mistakes of others and get ourselves further up the field, every point will count in this championship.” At the halfway mark in the championship Ross still maintains third place with 547 points and with three rounds still to go is still well within striking distance of championship leader Andre Heimgartner (605 points) and Jason Bargwanna who is in second (561 points). The Championship now heads to Teretonga near Invercargill, one of Ross’ favourite circuits. “Teretonga is an awesome circuit. Turn one there is the best corner in the country, if you can get that right it sets up your lap.” “We had a good run there last season, with a first a second and a third, so looking forward to see if we can go better.”

Far North Flash made welcome

Members of the Cambridge community have rallied behind a group of Northland girls determined to make it big on the Avantidrome track. This week members of the “Far North Flash” under 13 girls racing team from Kaitaia, having just taken out top spots in the SRAM Tour de Ranges, continued their cycling trip through to Cambridge, where they completed their accreditation to race at the Avantidrome. Their coach Phil Gibbs, who travels with the girls all over the country and helps to fundraise for the trips, accompanied the girls during their stop in town, and confirmed that a few Cambridge locals had generously offered support to the Far North Flash team, including accommodation sponsored by Podium Lodge. “I’m humbled by the welcome that

we’ve had from Cambridge, the words of encouragement and support offered to the girls, and by the local people we’ve met here,” Phil said. The team successfully completed their Avantidrome accreditation to race, becoming UCI registered racers, and were inspired by a few local champions in the process, meeting Rio Olympic Champions Sam Webster and Ethan Mitchell. Despite the six-hour travel time to get here, Phil confirmed the team would be back soon racing at the Avantidrome. “After all, Cambridge is the Home of Champions,” he said.

Looking for the right candidate for the job? ADVERTISE YOUR VACANCY WITH US!

This book was apparently an uncorrected proof copy and not for resale, so I’m not sure if it was changed much after this. It flicked between Jodie and her grandmother Agnes, backwards and forwards in time and I don’t know if it was just me but sometimes I wasn’t entirely sure which person I was reading about. Both women were complex, damaged and what society would probably classify as “eccentric”. Agnes with her collection of squashed flies – juicy brutes – sugar lumps and toenail clippings, and granddaughter 40-something Jodie with her dubious personal hygiene and general social awkwardness, they are both fascinating characters. This book can be funny, but also a bit excruciating as you are reading about the treatment of Jodie in particular, who is victimised by society’s bullies. The hostility she faced just going about her life was hard to read about, and I’m sure quite realistic for people who obviously don’t fit in with what is deemed acceptable. As with any family, there were secret and trauma, and it was interesting to see these unfold and how they affected both women and made

Cambridge dancers make national stage By Sophie Iremonger

Two young Cambridge dancers have made it onto a national stage, being cast in the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s upcoming Auckland show, The Piano: the ballet. Gabi Hill and Isla Newlands, two friends who attend K.S. School of Dance in Cambridge, were encouraged by their dance teacher Kellie Schroer to try-out for the NZ Ballet show and flew to Wellington last week for auditions. They were just two of over 135 girls from all over New Zealand aiming for the role of Flora, a young character in the show. Though they didn’t make it into the main cast, the two girls were both selected to appear as extras in Auckland performances of the show. “It was really cool,” Gabi said of the audition. “The next day Mum got a message and gasped, I thought something bad had happened but she told me we’d been asked to be in the play, and after a few seconds I was like ahhh! “At first when I told my dad he thought I was joking,” she laughed. “I’m really excited, it will be a cool experience, and I’m really glad that Isla’s going to be there as well, we won’t be alone, we’ll have each other.” Isla was not available this week for comment, but her mother Hannah Newlands said she and husband Craig were immensely

proud. “As parents we were just in awe that she had given this a go with 135 other dancers from around New Zealand… She has set herself goals and is now fulfilling them,” she said. “Isla and Gabi went into the audition laughing and came out with big smiles and still giggling.” The two girls will appear on stage alongside the Royal NZ Ballet performers at two of the Auckland shows in early March. “Sometimes I’ll suddenly be like, oh I’m in the show, this is amazing, and then I’ll eventually calm down, and then later I’ll remember, and

it’s kind of just a cycle of that,” Gabi laughed. “Thank you to Miss Kellie for giving Isla and I the opportunity to audition, we really appreciate it.” The girls, both 11 years old, have been dancing at Schroer’s K.S. School of Dance since they were around 5 or 6 years old. “What a wonderful outcome,” said Kellie. “If they hadn’t gone they wouldn’t have known what they could achieve. I’m tremendously thrilled and immensely proud of them. It’s certainly boosted their confidence and we’ll surely see a lot more from these girls in the future.”

Thomas leads some escaped Gladers on their final and most dangerous mission yet. To save their friends, they must break into the legendary Last City, a WCKD-controlled labyrinth that may turn out to be the deadliest maze of all. Anyone who makes it out alive will get answers to the questions that the Gladers have been asking since they arrived in the maze.

Reviewed by Claire Castle I totally loved this film. It was gritty, at times hilarious and also heartbreaking. When police fail to find any suspects in the murder of her daughter, a mother rents three derelict billboards on a country road, having them sign written to call attention to their inaction. The community is divided, but Frances McDormand is masterful in her portrayal of a mother who has nothing left to lose and doesn’t care what anyone thinks. Not surprisingly she won a Golden Globe for it. There were standout performances from Woody Harrelson as the police chief, who you start of feeling as though you should be against, but you just can’t be, and Sam Rockwell who rightfully won best supporting actor at the Golden Globes for his portrayal of a woefully inadequate and totally off the rails police officer. This film was gold. Not only has it won stacks of awards and praise, including People’s Choice at the Toronto International Film Festival, but it will grip you for the whole entire movie (I didn’t even fall asleep once). Go and see this movie!
