It’s been quite a year

Photographer Michael Jeans was asked to select a photo as his pick for 2017, and it’s this one. “It’s not necessarily the best, it is, though, representative of our Cambridge community and the project I have been creating for more than a decade,” he said. Michael said this photo – taken on Anzac Day at the Twilight Cycling Festival – acknowledges and celebrates us and our town. He likes the determined look on the youngster’s face, and the interactions between parents and children. Michael, who grew up at Whitehall, has been working on his Cambridge project since 2006, giving it his serious attention since 2012. You can look at aspects of the project at actualcambridge.nz. Michael is taking the photos as a snapshot in time for years to come, and we reckon that’s pretty cool.

Cambridge newsroom update And, just like that, here we at our last paper for 2017. The boss, David Mackenzie, has kindly unpadlocked the fire escapes and released us from our bondage, at least until next year. The first paper of 2018 is coming out on January 12, so the hardworking among us will be back on January 4. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this week’s paper – we have C2 for summer reading and extra puzzles, and the usual collection of news and happenings from Cambridge and its surrounds. Our front page image was chosen by our photographer-at-large, Michael Jeans, who has chosen it as his Cambridge photo of the year. Michael is a Cambridge institution, and there’s not much that goes on in the town without him knowing. We are lucky to have him. We have plenty of exciting things in the offing for the paper next year, and once we’ve recovered from Christmas we will look forward to bringing them to you. The Cambridge News team would like to thank our advertisers whose support means you can get this paper, and the delivery people who hit the streets to deliver 12,200 copies every week. We’d also like to thank the people who have shared their stories this year, and, most of all, thank you for reading the paper. We couldn’t be doing this without you. We wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year with whatever you have planned.

A “perfect storm” of school expenditure saw Cambridge East School named on an AuditorGeneral’s report of schools with financial worries this week, along with 28 other schools. A spokesperson for the Office of the AuditorGeneral said the school had a deficit of $171,347 as at 31 December 2016. “In layman’s terms, a working capital deficit of $171,347 means that the money the school owed people at 31 December 2016 exceeded the amount of money the school had plus the money the school was owed by other people by $171,347. When a school is in this situation, there is a risk that the school cannot pay its bills when they are due to be paid. Because of this, the Ministry of Education said that it would provide the school more money than it would otherwise get, if it had to, so that the

school could pay its bills,” the spokesperson said. Cambridge East’s principal Hamish Fenemor said the deficit was the result of a number of extraordinary things that happened during the year. The school needed to be repainted at a cost of $50,000, trees needed to be felled to the tune of $30,000 and the school had to make up a staffing shortfall using its own funds at a cost of $80,000. The school had Ministry of Education funding for 360 children, however when the role shot up to 417 by the end of the year the school had to pay for the extra teachers’ wages. All of these things added up, and the school quickly reached out to the Ministry of Education for assistance. The Ministry’s financial advisor working with the school described the situation as a “perfect storm”, and the school has since been officially

taken off the list of closely monitored schools in August this year. Other schools on the list included Blockhouse Bay Intermediate, which reportedly spent $7000 on a farewell party for their principal as well as a $3000 leaving gift. In addition, that school apparently collected $3700 for Fiji flood victims but which was never passed on to them. Also “named and shamed” was Puhinui School in South Auckland, which gave its departing principal a $8500 ride on mower as a leaving gift. Hamish said the way this was reported had made it sound as though there were suspicious dealings at the school, which was not only unfair but also not true. He is still pushing his own lawn mower, and Cambridge East School’s finances are absolutely fine.

Quickfire News Attempted ambulance heist

A group of five hooded males on pushbikes harassed a St John ambulance officer in Burns St in the early hours of Monday morning. The ambulance officer had returned to his vehicle at approximately 2.15am when the men blocked his path before trying to gain entry to the ambulance. They reportedly banged on the side trying to get in, however the driver was able to lock the doors and call police for help. Police attended the scene but have been unable to locate the group responsible. Anyone with information is asked to call Cambridge police on 827 5531 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to make an anonymous report.

* * * * What happened to Level 2?

Due to record water use, Waipa has catapulted from Level 1 water restrictions over Level 2 and gone straight to Level 3. Last week, Waipa residents used a record breaking 60 million litres of water over a two-day period. Water Alert Level 3 means a complete ban of sprinklers for Waipa residents. Hand held hosing is still allowed. Waipa District Council’s water services manager Tony Hale says high water use in Cambridge and low water supplies in Te Awamutu this early in the season, means the jump from alert level one to three is crucial. Water being used for swimming pools and sprinklers in Cambridge is of huge concern. “Cambridge residents are much higher users, meaning our treatment plant struggles to keep up with demand. The Cambridge water treatment plant is currently being upgraded but this will not be ready to use this summer,” he says.

Cambridge News Person of the Year Linda Roil now has a container to store donated goods for kids in care. By Claire Castle

C

AMBRIDGE WOMAN LINDA ROIL has a heart for children, and it is her work for kids in care that has seen her named the first-ever Cambridge News Person of the Year. This year, Linda has started a community initiative which makes up packs of clothes and toys to give to Waikato kids who come into care, often arriving with the clothes on their backs and little else. She’s lost count of how many packs she’s taken out to kids, but reckons it’s around 400. A caregiver herself, Linda was saddened when her first foster child turned up with a black rubbish sack of clothes, half of which didn’t fit, and the other half were damp and smelly. The idea grew from there and Linda began gathering donated clothes and toys from the Cambridge community five months ago. The initiative has snowballed, and Linda’s home is a now packed

to capacity with donations of toys and clothes. “It’s a good problem to have,” Linda laughed. She started off collecting on the Cambridge Pay It Forward Facebook page, however the gifting rules of that page saw her switch to the Cambridge Grapevine, which Linda said have been fantastic supporters of her work. It has grown to the point now where Linda has her own Facebook page – Kids in Need Waikato – so people can connect directly with her. Thanks to the generosity of the community, Linda has just had a shipping container delivered to store all the donations. Linda said she was a bit taken aback by being chosen as the Cambridge News Person of the Year, saying that the credit should lie with the Cambridge community as a whole. “It’s the little town that cares, it’s awesome,” she said. Linda has a long list of people to thank, too many to mention here,

including her family. “It’s really nice to know your family is behind you…what husband would put up with this?” she asked, gesturing around at all the donated items that have overrun their home. “We just laugh about it,” she said. Linda has also recently been awarded $6000 from ASB, winning the ASB Good as Gold-Santa Edition Award as well as being the cause receiving donations from the Giving Tree in the Rouge Café courtyard. “I feel like I’ve found my niche,” Linda said, and no doubt the hundreds of children across the Waikato who have received her care packs are pretty glad that she has. Congratulations, Linda, we are proud to have you as our inaugural Cambridge News Person of the Year. You can visit Linda’s Facebook page for more information, or check out her Givealittle page – Kids in Need Waikato – set up for people who may not have goods to donate but still want to help.

A survey put out by Destination Cambridge has revealed that most people who completed it are happy with the format and timing of the town’s annual Christmas parade. The feedback favoured keeping the parade’s traditional route and starting time of 2pm. CEO of Destination Cambridge, Roger Gordon, said that the survey will go to the i-Site board and Parade Organising Group, which is made up of Destination Cambridge, the Chamber of Commerce, the media, Rotary, Cambridge New World, Waipa District Council, and the parade coordinator, when they meet in June or July.

On Friday, council had further phone discussions with Spark about the location of the cell phone tower recently erected on the corner of Madison St and Watkins Rd in Cambridge East. Council has described these discussions as “constructive and positive”, saying they have suggested six alternate locations to Spark. Five of these are in locations adjacent to the Expressway, with the sixth being on the Robinson St road reserve fronting the town belt, halfway between Taylor St and Watkins Rd. The proposed sites are close to the Watkins Rd location but do not have residential properties immediately adjacent. There is one “dormant” site in Cambridge, where resource consent has been granted but a tower has yet to be built. This is on the public road reserve between 178 – 180 Thornton Rd. Council discuss alternatives to this site with Spark in January.

Water company rejected

A single council-owned company to manage water, wastewater and stormwater services is off the table. At Tuesday’s meeting, Waipa District Council rejected a recommendation to form a non-asset owning company alongside Hamilton City Council. Hamilton voted last week to support the formation of a waters company with itself and Waipa as founding shareholders. Waikato District Council, which has also been involved in discussions, has yet to indicate how it wants to manage its waters business going forward. It is unlikely to make a decision until early 2018. Last week Hamilton cited the financial efficiencies offered to each council compared with the status quo; the regional benefits to be gained from closer collaboration and the non-financial benefits including the ability to attract and retain expert staff as reasons to form a company. Waipa’s elected members rejected those arguments, 7-6. Those who voted against the recommendation to form a company were councillors Hazel Barnes, Vern Wilson, Grahame Webber, Clare St Pierre, Sue Milner, Judy Bannon and Elwyn Andree-Wilson. Those in favour were Mayor Jim Mylchreest, Bruce Thomas, Liz Stolwyk, Susan O’Regan, Marcus Gower, Andrew Brown. Mylchreest said he was disappointed at the outcome of Tuesday’s council meeting but respected the process and the vote. He said it was a “very difficult and technically, a very complex decision”. “Time will tell whether today’s vote was the right way to go. Personally, I don’t think so. But, the decision has now been made and as elected members our job is to wholly support our staff in getting on and delivering the best possible water services we can with the resources we have,” he said. “That’s exactly what we’ll be doing. Waipa has a huge capital works programme proposed over the next decade and that needs to be our focus.”

New pool on horizon Waipa District Council has confirmed construction of the new Cambridge pool will begin in mid2018. Over the last few months council staff have been working with architects and contractors to agree details of the building as well as the entrance way on Williamson Street. Project manager Lorraine Kendrick said the street design was vital to the project. “We need easy access to the pool for all road users, including cyclists and kids on bikes. But we also want to retain a welcoming and attractive street for residents and visitors.” She said there was a lot of “positive hype” around the new facility and people were now, after many years of talking, seeing the

Busy week at Salvation Army By Sophie Iremonger

Volunteers at the Cambridge Salvation Army hall have been busy bees this week sorting through hundreds of

gifts and food items for over 70 local families to enjoy through the festive season. “The bulk of it probably hasn’t even come in yet,” said Karen Baker,

Captain of the Cambridge Salvation Army, earlier this week. “This is about 50 percent full, 60 maybe, we will definitely see it growing over the next week, we’ve already had

to go back twice within one day to a supermarket because their (donation) bins overflowed twice in one day.” The Cambridge Salvation Army are the

point of contact this year for the newlyformed Cambridge Council of Social Services (CCOS) – a gathering of several Cambridge charity organisations, Community House, Women’s Refuge, Work and Income, local churches, working together to provide Christmas cheer and support to those in need. “This is the first year that we’ve done a combined effort,” explained Karen’s husband Shaun, who shares with her the role as Captain. “We’re trying to work together so we can pool resources and not double up. So, when each of the agencies has a person who wants to donate, they direct them here, and we sort it all out. So, it’s a bit crazy over the next few days!” About 20 volunteers in total have been working over the last week to organise the huge range of items. “Most of the presents aren’t pre-wrapped, our clients can come in and

choose their own gifts for their kids, wrap them themselves, and we can feed them and chat to them, give them the rest of their Christmas cheer (food) and then we send them on their way, hopefully ready to have a good Christmas, so this is definitely a highlight of the year,” said Karen. When it comes to the recent debate of food banks having too many tinned chickpeas or tomatoes, Karen said, “It’s not too bad, and obviously what comes in in terms of tins and excess food, we just roll over into the new year. “What we really love to come in at this time of year is the Christmas cheer stuff, chocolates, Christmas pies and so on. The first thing that people think when you say food bank is tinned food, and we want them to think bigger than tinned food.” The organisation is still open to donations from the community and new clients seeking support for the holiday period or beyond.

Clock is ticking for Estelle

By Steph Bell-Jenkins

Cambridge parents Rosalie Christini and Ian Transom are in an agonising race against time to raise $200,000 for their daughter’s medical treatments before her face becomes permanently disfigured. Estelle, 4, was born with Sturge-Weber Syndrome, a rare neurological condition that affects about one in 50,000 people. She has an accumulation of abnormal blood vessels near the surface of her skin, leaving about half her face and body marked with port wine

stains. There are also abnormal blood vessels in her brain, causing her to suffer from seizures, optic nerve damage in one eye, and mental and physical delays. “She had her first seizure at five and a half months and since then her life’s revolved around eye operations, MRIs and hospital appointments,” Rosalie said. “She’s on medication now but her last seizure about 17 months ago was so severe it took them four days to get it under control and they believe she probably had a stroke. She lost all the movement on one side

of her body, but she’s got that back now.” To treat the port wine stains, Estelle needs 50 laser treatments costing $4000 each, with the first 20 needed as soon as possible. “If she doesn’t have laser treatment her face will end up deformed,” Rosalie said. “There’s a high chance her nose will balloon up and get really out of shape and the port wine stain will get lumpy and develop little blisters on it that are really easy to knock and bleed. “At her age the stain on her face doesn’t cause any pain or discomfort, but it will when she’s older, and it’s that whole psychological thing. When she goes to school – if she can go to a normal school – she will be different.” As a parent Rosalie has always given back, volunteering on various committees and generously giving her time to help others. For years she has juggled Estelle’s medical appointments with parttime work in Hamilton and commitments to Leamington School’s PTA, where she organises school lunch orders and helps with a range of fundraisers. “I was on the PTA before I even had Estelle, so I’ve just carried on,” she said. Now she and Ian are in the stressful position of having to ask others for financial help to raise the thousands of dollars they need. Waikato District Health Board could only promise to fund four treatments, she said, whereas

funding in some other in countries, such as Australia, was unlimited. “Everything we have we’ve worked for, so to have to rely on others’ generosity and money coming out of other people’s budgets is quite a humbling experience,” she said. “I don’t think anyone likes to ask for money.” The couple is “hugely” grateful to people who collectively donated $5000 through the Givealittle website

following an article about Estelle in a national magazine earlier this year, and to the Lions Club of Cambridge, which gave them $4000. “Bunnies (Childcare and Pre-School), where Estelle goes, and Leamington School, where two of our older boys go, have also been incredibly supportive and run fundraisers for her,” Rosalie said. Rosalie fights back tears as she speaks about one Leamington School

family who anonymously donated $500. “I think it just shows there are some really, really kind people in the world who are willing to help,” she said. “There are so many good causes and we always feel really lucky when people choose our daughter.” If you would like to help Estelle, please visit www.givealittle. co.nz and type “laser treatments for Estelle” into the search window.

morning. They were welcomed by kaumatua from local iwi, Ngati Koroki Kahukura and Ngati Haua, who led the group through the building, each person touching the walls of each room, to bless the new space. With construction having just been completed, the blessing allows for work to begin on furnishing the interior and preparing it for use in the new year. Known as the Perry Community Water Sports Centre and the high-performance training centre for Canoe Racing New Zealand, the facility will be used by both elite athletes and members of the local community. The Cambridge Young Mariners, Karapiro Kayak Racing Club and the Cambridge Yacht Club will all be based out of the new facility, which stands at the site of the original Cambridge Yacht Club rooms built shortly after the lake was formed in the summer of 1946/47. “After 5 or 6 years

of negotiations with Waipa DC, we came to an agreement to sign over the land lease and demolish the Cambridge Yacht Club building to make space for the new multi-use facility,” explained Chris Raynes, Commodore of the Cambridge Yacht Club. The new building is officially council-owned, with the three associated local clubs taking priority use. Outside of their usage, the public are welcome to use the new space. Liz Stolwyk, who is managing community use of the facility, said the space can hold up to 60 people and will be ready

to use in the early new year. “It’s a great place to come out, parking’s good, location fantastic, café on site. I think it will be really popular,” she said. “I think it’s sensational, and the view is something else!” said Waipa Deputy Mayor Grahame Webber, who spoke following the blessing. “It’s a really purpose-built building and they’ve done a superb job, Lobdell Construction. It’s a real asset to the site.” “We’re very fortunate to have the opportunity to use it,” said Mark Weatherall, CEO of Canoe Racing NZ. “It’s pretty

cool, and that view! “We haven’t been able to get into it until it’s been blessed, so now we can start to set things up.” The men’s elite canoe racing team will be based at the facility from January 3 onwards, whilst the women will join them in 2020. A number of development camps will also be run throughout the year. The official opening ceremony of the new building will take place on Friday February 23, coinciding with a significant Canoe Racing New Zealand event on the lake.

Relay coming to Cambridge Supplied by the Cancer Society It doesn’t matter whether or not you have a cape, the Cancer Society is urging people to become superheroes and register for Relay for Life 2018 – to be held in Cambridge for the first time. The inspiring community event, where team members take turns walking or running around a track, gives people the chance to celebrate cancer survivors and carers; remember loved ones lost to cancer; and fight back by raising awareness and funds to support the work

of Cancer Society. Catriona Findlay, fundraising manager for the Cancer Society, said the event on Saturday March 10 at the Cambridge Raceway on Taylor St will have a carnival-like atmosphere with 12 hours of non-stop entertainment. The event will ensure the Cancer Society can provide practical and emotional support for people with cancer in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions. Ms Findlay says that the charity relies on events such as this to ensure these services remain free. “From providing

emotional support advocacy and helping them navigate the medical system to connecting them with Cancer Society practical support services including transport to treatment, therapeutic massage, accommodation and frozen meals; the work that we do in the community can make all the difference for someone during a challenging time.” The event is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, and there is no minimum team size. Students release cookbook By Sophie Iremonger

Two Cambridge girls have put their passion for sport and food to paper with the release of their own cookbook, highlighting their ideal easy foods for physical activity and mental balance. The book, “To Fuel an Adventure”, is based on the goto foods that Jessica Gosling and Alannah Mouat eat for exercise, convenience or comfort, described as “Perfect for school and uni-aged students,” said Jess. “Recipes are simple and easy to understand, and may just keep students off those tragic two-minute noodle diets! “It’s not exclusive to teenagers… they’re quick, easy recipes that are still quite healthy.”

Jessica Gosling and Alannah Mouat have created a cook book designed especially for students

The girls came up with the concept for the book in Term 1, during their final year at Cambridge High School, and were working on it up until its release in October. “A lot goes into it, there were a lot of learning curves,” said Jess. “We did all the photography ourselves, all the design work, just learning what goes into making a book… It’s quite nice to see (the finished product) after all that.” “Publishing your own book is pretty cool,” Alannah added. “At the start of the year going into Year 13 it seemed like such a big thing, but now we’ve done it.” The format of the book comprises of a ‘healthy body’ section, “which is full of recipes we deem to be healthy, that we use in our training to be in peak condition for our sports,” said Jess. “The other section is ‘healthy mind’ and hits the really yummy treats-aspect of our diets… it’s what we eat after competition, and occasionally from day to day to maintain that mental balance that restricting yourself too much can destroy; especially at our age,” said Jess. “We’ve got advice in there for cooking on a budget and that sort of thing so it’s really good for uni students,” added Alannah, who will be studying nutrition at Massey University next year, while Jess will study chemical and process engineering at Canterbury University. The 17-year-olds said they had a lot of fun making the book, which started out as a fundraiser to help cover the cost of adventure racing in the annual Coast to Coast event this year. “Unfortunately we had to pull out of it because I injured myself and Alannah’s now focusing on lacrosse, but definitely in future we will be doing it,” said Jess, who named the taco recipe as her personal favourite for active pursuits, while Alannah chose the trail mix. Their all-round favourites from the book were the brown rice salad, the tomato pasta, the blackberry and

lime meringue pie, and the chocolate mint “freak” shake. The book is available now at Paper Plus Cambridge. Cambridge News has two signed copies of the book to give away. Just send your full name and contact details to: sophie@cambridgenews.nz by January 5 to be in the draw.

It’s something of a homecoming for hip hop artist Diaz Grimm who will play the final shows of his NZ tour at the Cambridge Town Hall this weekend. The former Cambridge High School student is on the verge of taking his career to the world stage, having completed two stints in the USA, co-writing his 2017 single Foreigner with Mike Elizondo – the man behind hip hop successes The Real Slim Shady by Eminem and In Da Club by 50 Cent. In the last two years Diaz has released two albums – Osiris in 2015 and 2077 last year – and on Christmas Eve he will release a new EP featuring five songs made by Grimm over the last six years which have not yet been released – except for Foreigner released earlier this year. “I’ll announce the EP on Christmas Eve, and then I’m going to disappear on social media completely, until it’s time for my next single from Toronto,” said Grimm, who will move from Cambridge to Canada in the early new year. “The main reason why I’m moving to Toronto is management,” said Diaz. “Because I’m leaving New Zealand, I wanted the final show of the tour to be in Cambridge, I don’t know when I’ll be back to do shows again.” This weekend’s performances are rather special, being held in the same venue that Diaz first performed in in 2008 – playing

the iconic Cambridge Anthem to a packed-out crowd at the Town Hall. “That was the first time I ever played anywhere, we sold it out, it was like 500 kids,” Diaz remembers with a smile, later adding, “You could say I’m ‘Cambridge born and raised’.” Diaz has brought several big names to town over the years as an event manager and party organiser – including the likes of Savage, Dei Hamo, David Dallas, PNC, P-Money, Home Brew – and at this weekend’s show he’ll be joined by another top hip hop artist, Kings – creator of this year’s highest selling

The shows – which include an R18 show (serving alcohol) on Friday, and an all-ages show on Saturday, will feature two opening DJs, followed by a full set by Diaz Grimm and finishing up with a DJ set by Kings. “It’s going to be a real cool set up production wise, we’ve got some big screens with visuals the whole time, some real cool effects with smoke machines, lighting,” said Diaz, who hopes to see the Town Hall sell out once again. Final meeting of year for Red Cross

Submitted by the Cambridge Red Cross The final meeting of the Cambridge Red Cross was held on Thursday December 14, in the form of an afternoon tea, which members of the committee had organised as a big thank you to our many

Red Cross drivers. It was also a chance for members of the committee to meet with the drivers. A large turnout of drivers, along with the committee, enjoyed the food catered for by Ngaire Bisset. Red Cross will be operating all over the

holiday break so anyone wanting transport to hospital or medical appointments in Hamilton, please contact Jan on 027 6677076. Ngaire will also be on call for any medical equipment loans. If any Cambridge resident is

Visionaries’ celebrations Submitted by Visionaries Cambridge Visionaries’ end of year dinner was held at the Vintage Car Club rooms, and the theme was Hats, with a interesting assortment on display. Geoff Walker on the keyboard provided the entertainment. For our last outing of 2017, a group set out for a weekend of international experiences. First stop, Te Puke for a sumptuous morning tea and time to meander around the kiwifruit capital’s town, then on to Whakatāne for an afternoon at leisure. Some walked the waterfront, some shopped, others sampled the local bars and cafés, the more energetic braving the motel’s pool. The customary happy hour before an

evening of Thai hospitality. Sunday’s highlight, breakfast, prepared and served by delightful L’Epicerie’s French hosts, a wonderful mix of pastries, baguettes, juice and coffee. Over to Ohope for a stroll on the beach before returning to Paengaroa for an educational visit to a 150-hectare kiwifruit orchard. Eating kiwifruit is one thing but to stand under the canopy learning the intricacies of their cultivation is quite another. A New Zealand roast lunch in Te Puke completed the weekend’s activities. The first monthly meeting for 2018 is Saturday February 3. New members welcome, for further information contact Linda, 022 0696 891.

Visionaries enjoyed an authentic French breakfast on a recent trip to Whakatane.

Grey Power Christmas lunch Sumitted by Cambridge Grey Power Members of Cambridge Grey Power gathered in the Community Centre Taylor Street on Wednesday December 6 for their annual Christmas lunch. It was a light hearted, fun afternoon starting with a lovely two course lunch provided by Gourmet Delicious Caterers. Entertainment by Bronwyn, who gave us a great rendition of “Jake the Peg” was followed by games amid much laughter. This was followed by tea and coffee along with Christmas cake, donated

by Margaret Vosper, made and iced by Margaret Dodd. President Val Massey presented Jim Watson with a certificate of appreciation for his years of service to Grey Power in Cambridge. Jim joined in 1999 three years after the association was formed and for many of the following 18 years he served on the committee, many of them as vice president. The committee wishes to thank all members and hope they have a safe and happy festive season. We next meet on February 7, 2018.

Fix for wet Te Ko Utu track Several Cambridge locals have noticed the track at Te Ko Utu lake has been rather wet lately, constantly wet. The Thornton Road side of the track has been in the damp condition for more than a month, and council says the cause is

not a burst pipe, but from several natural springs which emerged over winter. A council spokesperson confirmed they were aware of the problem and have been investigating how best to fix it. “Work was scheduled to begin

(last) week. A contractor will be digging out and draining all the known springs and following that, will repair the track surface.” Weather permitting, the work was expected to be complete over the next week or so.

Achievement House Christmas bash

Achievement House Cambridge celebrated the festive season last week with plenty of food, fun, live music and even a visit from Santa. The Bruised Brothers band from the Cambridge Rotary Club had people up on the dance floor and Santa made sure everyone got a gift. “Achievement House was originally set up and run by a group of committed locals with the support and goodwill of the community and is still the case today over forty years later,” said Achievement House manager Neil Fynn. “This community support is no more evident than with the brilliant

Christmas party coordinated and run by the Cambridge Rotary Club and supported by so many of the hospitality industry businesses in town. It has become a much looked forward to event that is greatly enjoyed and appreciated by all who work at or are involved with Achievement House.” Cafes and businesses from around Cambridge generously donated food toward the Christmas lunch for Achievement House members to enjoy. Organisers wish to warmly thank all those who contributed towards the event: Bryan Paynter, The Deli on the Corner, Fran’s Café, Rouge, Café

A real Kiwi beauty in red By Steph Bell-Jenkins

Sexy is a word not often connected with caravans, but Terry Pluck’s 1969 Concord Deluxe just might qualify. Painted “candy blood red” to match his 1966 Ford Galaxy convertible, its heat-sensitive paint warms from deep claret to a lustrous copper-orange in the sunshine, turning heads wherever it goes. A special feature is the “wallpaper” effect on the back, with pohutukawa flowers that hide in the dark paint and appear as it lightens. Built by a luxury caravan manufacturer in Hastings in the 1960s, the supersized mobile home, which has featured in the local Christmas parade for the past decade, is one of only 10 deluxe models ever made. Terry had never holidayed in a caravan growing up, but caught the bug when he went camping with some friends who brought theirs along. “I thought it could be really cool for the kids, especially with how the weather changes so quickly,” he said. “I did a bit of research and thought these Concords would be the ones because they’d hold their value. They’re made of fibreglass so they’ll PREVIOUS PAGE: The original character of the caravan has been preserved, right down to the original logo and formica benchtops.

never leak.” After a three-year search he found a beautiful specimen on TradeMe in November 2008 and hit ‘buy now’. Unfortunately, when he drove to Hastings to pick it up he found it bogged in a pond being used as a duck shooting maimai. “I thought what have I bought now?...I’m just chucking money away here. But I knew I could do a lot with it.” Encouragingly, the mud had prevented the axles and chassis from rusting. “So, we dragged it back, I got rid of the smell and then I pulled everything out – the whole inside – and then reshaped it to fit what we wanted to do.” A qualified engineer, long-time classic car enthusiast and keen artist, Terry spent five weeks fitting out the Concord with “all the mod cons” – including a pull-out TV, hidden internal stereo and plug-in satellite dish. But he took pains to preserve its original character inside, retaining the 1969 hood lining, sourcing authentic red Formica for the kitchen bench and table tops, and adding a Marilyn Monroe cushion. He even had the manufacturer’s logo on the aircraftstyle door restored to its original glory. Terry has “won quite a few shows” with the Concord and had it featured in books and magazines – and his

family loves it. “It’s just that experience of camping, you know, going off on an adventure and knowing that no matter what the weather throws at you you’re pretty okay,” he said. He admits caravanning is a “bit of work” and you have to take the good with the bad. “It’s not like you go to the motel

and put the key in the door and you can relax. You pull in, you set up; it takes two hours to put the awning up.” But he loves the social side of campgrounds, which he reckons is “a Kiwi thing”. “I think it’s in everyone’s blood,” he said. “You meet people from all walks of life and the kids are out riding their bikes and doing things that kids

should be doing. “It takes a night or two for the batteries to unwind and you get in the mode and by the time 4.30pm comes around and everyone’s starting to get the crackers and cheese out you know it’s drinks time. And then the barbecues are firing and you think yeah, nah this is good.”

The 1969 Concord Deluxe was hauled out of the mud and lovingly restored by Cambridge engineer Terry Pluck.

JUMANJI

In a brand-new Jumanji adventure, four high school kids discover an old video game console and are drawn into the game’s jungle setting, literally becoming the adult avatars, they chose. What they discover is that you don’t just play Jumanji - you must survive it. To beat the game and return to the real world, they’ll have to go on the most dangerous adventure of their lives, discover what Alan Parrish left 20 years ago, and change the way they think about themselves - or they’ll be stuck in the game forever, to be played by others without break. Really enjoyable, thoroughly entertaining, so many laughs. It’s well paced, has a great cast with great action sequences. A must-see movie, for all the family and worth your time. The pohutukawa-adorned caravan has won shows and been featured in books and magazines.

FERDINAND

Ferdinand is a giant bull with a big heart. He is mistaken for a dangerous beast and is captured and torn from his home and family. Determined to return to his family, he rallies a misfit team for the ultimate adventure. Set in Spain, Ferdinand proves you can’t judge a bull by its cover. “Good family fare and should appeal well. It’s very sweet, funny and should resonate well.” Matt.

PITCH PERFECT 3

Terry Pluck and sons William (9), Harry (5) and Oscar (12) all love the caravan.

After the highs of winning the world championships, the Bellas find themselves split apart and discovering there aren’t job prospects for making music with your mouth. But when they get the chance to reunite for an overseas United Service Organizations tour, this group of awesome nerds will come together to make some music, and some questionable decisions, one last time. “The film is good and will really deliver to the audience base.” Matt. It’s the farewell tour.

The Timber Trails Trust got consent from the Department of Conservation (DOC) to build the 947-square metre facility on an old “skid” site – where felled trees were rolled to, trimmed to length and trucked out of the bush. Five years on and it’s finally a reality. Building out in the middle of nowhere had its fair share of challenges, Phil admitted, with scrub to be cut and the driveway to be put in before work could begin. The site was so remote that there was an emergency locator beacon installed to summon a helicopter in the event of a serious accident. Otherwise help was just

Cambridge Homes’ director Phil Webb has his own room earmarked at the Timber Trail Lodge, nestled in the middle of the Pureora Forest Park’s Timber Trail mountain biking track. He’s a keen cyclist, for sure, but the lodge has also been a labour of love for Phil and the Cambridge Homes team, with the local company selected to build it. It’s two hours from Cambridge, or thereabouts, out in the middle of nowhere and then 16km up a gravel road, then 1km more up a gravel driveway. Remote and beautiful, it’s easy to see why Phil considers it to be a little slice of paradise. “It’s just the

Using locals was also part of the longer-term plan for the lodge, ensuring there is a supply of accessible tradespeople who can maintain it in the years to come. And it was important to boost the economies of Te Kuiti and Taumarunui, which are roughly the same

distance from the lodge, Cambridge Homes’ director Noel Shaw said. It gets cold in Piropiro, pretty much smack bang in the middle of the 84 km Timber Trail cycleway. “It rains twice as hard in the Pureora Forest, and the floor was so icy you had to break the ice before you could walk on it,” Phil explained. Continued from previous page lounge, along with an amenities shed and kitchen facilities was completed in March this year. The second stage, separate staff quarters and a wing of 10 rooms, each with its own ensuite, has recently been finished. The lounge, known as the hub, is the heart of the lodge, complete with couches, long tables and bench seats, and a fire. It’s unexpectedly warm and inviting, with a colour palette that makes it feel less like a facility and more like a home. Phil said when he and Noel first saw the colours the colour consultant chose, they both had a sharp intake of breath. The shade of yellow on the walls of the lodge’s lounge is rich and vibrant, and when they saw the bright red carpet destined for the floor the duo wondered how it was going to go. Even when the walls were painted, the yellow was a bit much, Phil said. But once the carpet was down, the room furnished and murals by local artist Jimmy Koura were up on the walls, it all just seemed to work. The whole lodge has a distinctly Kiwiana vibe about it, with attention paid to every detail. From the Crown Lynn crockery to the throw pillows made from upcycled woollen blankets with pictures of native birds on them, it’s as Kiwi as it gets. There are coat hooks made of railway spikes, and the beautiful timber everywhere adds to the cosy feel of the place. The project has also been the realisation of a dream for the lodge’s director, Bruce Maunsell. Piropiro has a rich heritage, Bruce explained, home to three timber mills and 600 people during the height of the native timber logging boom in the 1920s and 30s. There is a nod to this history in the design of the lodge, with its weather

board cladding, iron roofing and profile reminiscent of a community hall. Bruce said the diverse group of 27 investors are mostly not interested in a financial return, for them it was the opportunity to be part of conserving and enhancing the area that drew them to the project. There’s a focus now on pushing back on wildling pines that have self-seeded and are encroaching on the regenerating bush, and there’s been plenty of native vegetation planted around the site. “We want to be part of protected area tourism,” Bruce added. The lodge is off the grid, with no water or power services. For now, it runs off a diesel generator hooked up to 24 batteries, but in February they are making the move to solar. The number of batteries will increase to 60, and 70 solar panels will mean the The site needed a 1km driveway put into it before work could start. lodge can run without the generator for two or three days, Bruce said. Much more environmentally friendly. Rainwater is collected from the roof and filtered up to three 25,000 litre tanks on the hill, with a fourth one reserved for firefighting. And they have just discovered a spring on the site, as well, which was a bit like winning Lotto, according to Phil. Due to water restrictions, there are no sprinklers in the lodge, rather it’s built in fire pods so if a blaze broke out it would take an hour or more to burn through to the next pod. Just as well, since the nearest fire truck is an hour and a quarter away, Noel pointed out. It is fully catered as well, so weary mountain bikers can hop out of the saddle, grab a drink and sit on the deck while dinner is made for them. Even if you aren’t into biking, this place is a winner. Just ask Phil and Noel. The end result is a lodge that harks back to the architecture of old.

The Hamilton Gardens is a great spot for a picnic, or there’s a café on site if you’re after a coffee. Dogs are permitted on a lead in some areas.

Hamilton Zoo is open every day except Christmas Day, with tigers, zebras, chimpanzees, monkeys, meerkats, rhinos, tuatara, bison and the breath taking, towering giraffes on hand. The most “expensive” item on our list, it’s just $17 entry for students and senior citizens, $11 for children and $23 for adults.

The forest on Maungatautari remains untouched since pre-European occupation, in fact some trees on the mountain were seeded hundreds of years ago.

Maungakawa Hill also offers some great bush walks, as well as information boards on the history of the area, and some historic remains. Check out www.cambridge.co.nz for more details on local walking tracks, as well as other activities to do in and around Cambridge.

Kayaks are available to rent at The Boatshed in Karapiro, which will be open from January 3. Reservations are essential. Cambridge Primary students’ gift of giving Students from Cambridge Primary School carried out an act of kindness last week, donating well over 100 new and second-hand toys to the Cambridge Salvation Army. U18 girls’ quad Abigail Webbon, Caitlyn Hall, Olivia Clotten and Grace Redman, and cox Penny Willis took out third place in the A final.

The remarkable Rushlee Buchanan will look to become the first female cyclist to win the national road race championship five times, after confirming her entry for the BDO Road Cycling Nationals in Napier next month. The 29 year old has won three of the last four

years, and twice in a row, at the Nationals, as well as four times runnerup. Her greatest rival looks to be World Tour rider Georgia Williams, a former Olympic track teammate. This year Buchanan will be competing alongside Elite track teammates, Racquel Sheath, Kirstie

James and Elyse Fraser. Other Cambridge based cyclists, Bryony Botha, Michaela Drummond and Holly Edmonston, will also compete in the under-23 division. The 1141km race for both elite and U23 women is starting at 10am on Saturday January 6.

Christmas tennis

The festive spirit was in full swing at the Cambridge Racquets Club last week as the annual CRC Christmas Tournament got underway, with red and tinsel abounding both on the players and throughout the club. This popular annual tournament attracts players from throughout the Waikato and Thames Valley. The day was hot, high twenties, but it wasn’t the soaring temperatures that saw the Santa caps, red noses and deer antlers flung to courtside, it was the serious business of tennis

that had to be attended to. In the top division it was the Morrinsville mum-anddaughter combination of Keeley and Wendy Portegys who took top honours, with two stalwarts of Waikato women’s tennis Kay Rickman and Myrna Hyde taking the runner-up spot. In the men’s division the local CRC combo of Wayne Peterson and Peter Bryant took the court for their last game and knew what they had to do. Both them and their opponents hadn’t dropped a match all morning, both with three wins apiece. The gallant

effort by the locals, however, was not enough and the Hamilton combination of Justin Oosterveen and Bruce Irving took the day. Several more local players displayed strong performances on the day including Polly Robson, Kerrie Manion, Sally and Peter Bridgens, Jane Stearns, Chikako Tsumori, Rowland Davies, Garry Bell, and current tennis chair Rachael James. The Cambridge Racquets Club wished to thank Caro Gatley from Caro & Co Insurance for the continued support of the event.

Cambridge’s squash pro Joelle King (pictured below right) was beaten on Saturday in the quarter-finals of the women’s world squash championships in Manchester, England. King, 29 who has been in top form over the past few months was seeded ninth and had earlier beaten the seventh seed Sarah-Jane Perry (England) in the tournament. However, she found herself outclassed in the last eight by the third seed from France Camille Serme 11-4, 11-6, 11-4 in 29 minutes. It was the first quarterfinal at a world champs

for King since 2013 and will give her real drive towards next year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The previous day fellow Kiwi Paul Coll had lost

his men’s quarter-final, although he was the first New Zealand male to make the men’s last eight since Ross Norman in 1991.

The 111 Report

EXPERTS

POLICE

Monday December 11 - Thursday December 14 A new home build was burgled on Alan Livingston Drive during the week. Over $6000 worth of ‘vitex’ timber was taken. An attempted burglary occurred on Hall St during the week. Offenders have gained access by damaging the window latches. Fortunately, the house was alarmed which has scared the offenders off and nothing was stolen. Tuesday December 12 The Cambridge swimming pool on Williamson St was entered overnight and vandalised. The hoses were all unreeled with the taps turned on and the chairs were damaged and thrown in the pool. Offenders have gained access by cutting the fence. Wednesday December 13 - Sunday December 17 A shed at the Netball and bowls club on Scott St was broken into. The door was completely pulled off its hinges and several tools were taken. A bicycle was stolen from outside Cee Jay’s Dairy on Shakespeare St at 2pm on Wednesday. The bike is a 2018 black Trek Rusco mountain bike valued at $1500. Police received reports of a youth waving a firearm around at the skate park on Dominion Avenue. Units attended and located a broken plastic BB gun. The young owner was warned for his actions. Police were called to assist bailiffs in evicting tenants from a property on Williams St. The tenants were being obstructive and had created a barricade. The situation was managed by police and three people were arrested and warned for their behaviour. Thursday December 14 At around 8pm a 50-year-old male has shoplifted from New World, Cambridge. The male, described as Maori, short and of slim build, stole meat and rice bubbles. He was seen leaving in a Nissan Sentra. Saturday December 16 A trailer was stolen from a house on Williamson St overnight. The trailer had been advertised for sale on Facebook which may be related. A vacant house has burnt completely to the ground on Hicks Rd, Maungatautari between 1pm – 3pm. Fire services are assessing the damage to try and establish what started the fire. There were no injuries. Sunday December 17 – Monday December 18 A farm shed was broken into on Maungatautari Rd some time overnight. Offenders have damaged the lock to gain access and taken a chainsaw as well as the keys to a tractor and motorbike. If you have any information about any of these crimes, please contact the Cambridge Police or report it anonymously via Crime Stoppers 0800 555 111.
