Letter to the editor

Cambridge newsroom update It’s been another action-packed week here in Cambridge, with Sophie heading out to Lake Karapiro to watch the New Zealand slalom water skiing record being beaten. Unfortunately it doesn’t count because it wasn’t during a competition, but it was still pretty spectacular by all accounts. This week we also heard the rumour that the iconic Cambridge Water Tower is under scrutiny and might possibly be demolished, which prompted a “whiskey tango foxtrot” response from everyone here in the office. Our informant reckons the writing is on the wall for the tower, but I for one hope he is wrong (although he tells me he is never wrong, I’m hopeful this is a first). Once the engineer’s report is in, it will be interesting to see how council will proceed, particularly if reinforcement costs an arm and a leg. Watch this space for further details. Other than that, we have the usual assortment of people doing cool things around town, as well as commencement of some welcome safety improvements to the Cambridge to Piarere section of State Highway 1. And later this month we should find out if the planned bypass through Karapiro Rd is going ahead anytime soon when the government releases its much-awaited Government Policy Statement on priorities for transport investment. They have said that their focus is on safety, so surely the notorious stretch of road between Cambridge and the Tauranga turnoff must be on their radar. Also this week, we have CountryLife, our monthly rural publication. We endeavour to make this interesting for people who only wear their gumboots to kids’ sport as well as rural readers, so make sure you check it out. Anyway, we hope enjoy your paper this week, we’ve had a lot of fun bringing it to you. And if you haven’t done it already, make sure you check out what’s on offer at the Autumn Festival – there’s some seriously cool stuff coming up. Claire Castle, Editor

Street View:

Editor I have fond memories of growing up in Cambridge, on hot summer days we would often cool off in the back yard with the garden hose. It’s a real shame that the council have stripped this opportunity from our children and grandchildren with the introduction of these water meters and ridiculously high water charges. Cambridge has no shortage of water and making it drinkable has never been able to be done more cheaply and efficiently, yet we are about to be charged more than double the rate of places with real water shortage problems. Even those of us who use water responsibly will have any potential savings diluted by the cost of installing a meter and having it read. My advice to the council is abandon these fees, accept you have made a mistake, upgrade the network to a workable level, and let Mrs Jones water her garden without feeling guilty, let Mr Smith take care of his lawn without being an outcast, but most of all let our children engage in wholesome water play without being delinquents. If you don’t, then judging by the comments on social media, you need not apply for re-election. Don Sanders (abridged)

Council response: Water meters mean that people connected to the town supply will no longer be charged a ‘one size fits all’ charge for water, irrespective of how much they use. Instead most people will only be charged for the water they use. People can continue to splash under hoses, water gardens and fill swimming pools - if they choose to pay for it. For the 2018/19 year, drinkable water straight from the tap will cost 000.1495 cents per litre (or $1.45 per 1,000 litres). Based on the first mock bill, 51 per cent of all Cambridge households will pay less with water meters than they would have paid under the old charging regime where every household was charged a flat rate of $405.20 for water, irrespective of how much water they used.

Waipa District Council is seeking public feedback on their draft 10 year plan – specifically on six main points outlined at futurewaipa.co.nz and council offices. We asked locals for their thoughts.

Michelle Hart James Shepherd Water. Where I am in Ohaupo, we pay next I think the Cambridge Town Hall does need to nothing for our water. Apparently the preserving, I think that’s where the money mock water bills (for Waipa) cite a $106 should be spent. average for 3 months, I only pay about $36 to $50 for three months, and I have a big garden, so I think that’s the biggest thing.

Dorothy D Christine Watt I support the Cambridge Town Hall I’d have to agree with doing the new improvements and the Waipa heritage site Ohaupo sports centre, I don’t disagree with improvements. Spending a small amount on anything they’ve laid out so far. sports facilities is okay but really the sports people using them should be contributing – just like members of a club would.

Brook Robertson I’d say keeping open spaces around town is an important point, I like the fact that Cambridge doesn’t look like a city. And managing, preserving and caring for our waterways is quite important, the Waikato River Authority do a great job already.

Water tower under review Quickfire News By Claire Castle

The future of the historic Cambridge Water Tower is up in the air, with council advising they are currently assessing the structural integrity of the tower. The move follows the introduction of national guidelines around earthquake-prone buildings introduced last year, with the assessment including advice from structural engineers. The Waipa District Council’s Group Manager – Business Support, Ken Morris, said that once the assessment has been completed – expected to be within the next three to four months – options for the future of the iconic tower will be considered. “These options are likely to include investing money in strengthening the tower (costs still unknown) or demolishing the tower. “Before any decision is made, community consultation will take place. Any demolition of the tower would also require application of a resource consent (and the accompanying public process that goes with that),” he concluded. The water tower, which stands in front of Resthaven on Payne Park by Hamilton Rd, was built in 1903 for £1,077. The contractor was J J Holland, and George Russell Fellows was the bricklayer. Robert Morse helped to build the tower and with his horse raised the bricks by pulley, 80 feet to the top. Water was pumped from the Moon Creek springs (beside the gasworks) to the 20,000-gallon tank on the top of the tower, supplying the town with water until the tower was closed in 1926. It has Historic Place Category 2 listing, meaning it has been identified as having historic or cultural significance or value. The list is an information tool, however, and does not give automatic protection. The tower is also listed as a Category B structure under the Waipa District Plan, which means that it is recognised as having regional and district-wide significance. The band rotunda at the Te Koo Utu domain, the clock tower in the CBD and the Masonic Hotel on Duke St are among other Category B-listed structures in Appendix N1 of the Waipa District Plan.

Grass Roots Fund open

Fonterra has opened its Grass Roots Fund to support community projects, with grants of between $500 and $5000 up for grabs. Activities must either be bringing communities together, caring for the environment or making communities safer, for the fund to be considered. Projects must have a group focus, be held on public land, be specific to the region and appeal to a wide audience within the community, among other things. Distributing more than 1,800 grants since the fund began in 2007, support has gone to school groups, charitable trusts, sports clubs, and more. Visit the Fonterra Grass Roots Fund Facebook page for more information or check out their website. Applications close on March 31. * * * *

Balloons ahoy

Pack up the kids and head out to Lake Karapiro tonight (Friday March 23), as hot air balloons and associated festivities will be at the Mighty River Domain as part of the annual Balloons over Waikato festival. Latest information has six balloons in attendance, with a chance to see a hot air balloon from the inside out for a gold coin donation that will go to Rotary International. The free event will run from 5 – 8pm, with balloons inflating from 6pm. In addition to the balloons there will be food vendors on site as well as rides for the kids, including a tea cup ride, mini merry-go-round, inflatable obstacle course and an inflatable castle thanks to Waipa District Council. Among the balloons in attendance will be the Resene Colour Fun for Everyone family – a trio of balloons that fly together (pictured).

Netsafe is warning the public that there is an active RealMe phishing scam targeting New Zealanders. The phishing email (a message designed to get recipients to “take the bait”) states that the user has a private message and they need to access their RealMe account. The web link in the email then takes the user to a fake RealMe website that asks the user to validate their identity and upload personal documents, for example their passport and driver’s license. The emails are currently coming from non-government email addresses and direct users to non-government web sites. If you receive an email related to RealMe – the government’s secure way to prove who you are online – check the sender’s email address. Genuine communication will come from the govt. nz domain. If you are in any doubt, or not expecting an email from RealMe, log into your account directly. Do not click on the email link and delete the email immediately. If you have entered your passport information, Netsafe advises contacting the Department of Internal Affairs. If you’ve given your driver license information, contact the New Zealand Transport Agency. * * * *

Safety improvements started Work to make SH1 between Cambridge and Piarere safer got underway earlier this week. The safety improvements include adding roadside safety barriers in highrisk areas to stop vehicles running off the road and a wide centreline to keep vehicles apart. Minor improvements will also be made to some intersections along the route. NZ Transport Agency Regional System Manager Karen Boyt said the safety improvements will help prevent people being killed or seriously injured in crashes

on the route. “This road is currently the main link between Auckland and Tauranga and Hamilton and Tauranga but too many people are losing their lives on the road,” Ms Boyt said. “Between January 2005 and December 2014, nine people died and 29 were seriously injured on this stretch of the road. Safety barriers and wide centrelines are relatively easy to install but can be the difference between life and death if someone makes a mistake on the road.” The short-term safety improvements

will be carried out by Splice Construction on behalf of the Transport Agency and are expected to be completed by the end of summer 2019. The project is part of the government’s $600m Safe Roads and Roadsides programme underway to reduce deaths and seriously injuries on NZ rural state highways. The future of the highly-anticipated strengthening of the link between Cambridge and the Bay of Plenty should become clearer later this month, with the release of the draft 2018 Government

Transport Minister Phil Twyford said that current roading projects are continuing as they did before the election, “however the final GPS is likely to include new priorities for transport investment throughout New Zealand, and this will influence the timing and funding required for work programmes to proceed.” In January, local MP Louise Upston announced the launch of a petition to extend the Waikato Expressway south of Cambridge, expressing concern that the projects were “at risk of being canned by the new government”.

Rifling through Hospice shops for fashion By Sophie Iremonger

Fashion Over a Teacup will return to the Cambridge Town Hall on April 8 as part of the Cambridge Autumn Festival running from April 7 – 15. This year the competition includes an all new feature, RECREATE, where amateur designers create their own fashion ensemble using items from Hospice Waikato shops. “This is the first time we’ve done RECREATE, which we’re hoping is going to become quite a significant brand for us as well,” said Jane Burgess, chairperson of the Hospice Waikato events committee. “It’s brand awareness

for Hospice, a lot of people don’t actually know what Hospice is all about,” said Jane, explaining that the service covers the entire Waikato region, and helps all those suffering from terminal illness, not just cancer patients, along with their families, at no charge. “And it’s a fundraiser… It’s two million dollars a year that they have to fundraise to keep those services going.” Entries for the competition closed earlier this month, with 34 people signed up to take part. “We’re really excited about the response,” said Jane. “There’s a community out there that really enjoys it.” Mother and daughter Carrie and Grace

Andrews are each entering their own pieces in RECREATE, they were both about half way through finishing their entries last week. Carrie said for her it wasn’t really about competing. “All I’m interested in is actually having the chance to play and do something within the deadline, otherwise I wouldn’t be doing it,” she said. “In my busy little life, deadlines are really good. It’s a chance to say ‘okay, I’ve got until then to do it’, otherwise I just shelf things, so this is great. I’m not so into the modelling part, but I

really like the challenge of finding and putting a creative spin on it, I think it’s awesome.” Grace has inherited her mother’s creative genes, and also loves the creative motivation that the competition brings. “We’ve always been creative, there’s no other way to live.” Fashion Over a Teacup takes place on Sunday, April 8 starting at 2pm in the Cambridge Town Hall. Tickets are $50 which includes a glass of bubbles and high tea, available at Paper Plus Cambridge or hospicewaikato.org.nz.

Not sure about your rights Learn to sew your own at work? Ask the CAB. Kei te mōhio koe ki ō motika i te mahi? Kāore i te mārama? Patai Te Pou Whakawhirinaki o Kemureti Citizens Advice Bureaux Awareness Week began on March 19, and Cambridge’s Richard Vaughan says they are focusing on employment rights. “We see a lot of clients who come in with employment issues and questions, and it is surprising how often we find out that the client doesn’t have a written agreement, says Richard from CAB Cambridge. “If you’re an employee you must have a written employment agreement – it’s the law.” Even if you don’t have a written employment agreement, you are still entitled to minimum employment rights. You can’t be paid less than the minimum wage, and once you’ve worked at a place for a while you’re entitled to paid annual leave, sick leave and bereavement leave. Even if you sign an employment agreement that says you’ll be paid $10 per hour, you are entitled to at least the minimum wage ($15.25 per hour for an adult, at the time of writing this). Your employer can’t change any of your employment conditions unless you agree to those changes. The changes need to be recorded on an updated copy of the agreement and signed by both parties. If your employer wants you to work a 90 day trial, they can only do this if it’s in your written employment agreement and you haven’t worked for that employer before. You also must have signed the employment

As part of its waste minimisation work, Waipa District Council is hosting a free workshop tomorrow morning to teach locals how to make a reusable fabric item that will eliminate at least some single-use plastic from their lives. Whether it’s creating cloth wipes for babies’ faces, a cloth shopping bag, net produce bag or inserts for cloth nappies – if you want to learn how to sew handy things, head along to the Community Space at Bridges Church on Duke St tomorrow (Saturday)

from 10am – 2pm. Sarah from Sew Love will be there with Cecil (her solar-powered sewing van), and the team from Plastic Bag Free Cambridge will also be in attendance to help turn out your own cloth bag, complete with French seams. Everything will be provided, from locally-sourced and reused fabric to sewing machines, so come along and get sewing with expert guidance. No bookings required, just turn up.

agreement before you start working for them. During the trial period you are still entitled to the minimum employment rights. One thing that can catch a person out is if they are taken a on as an independent contractor rather than as an employee. It’s an important distinction, because independent contractors aren’t covered by employment law. If the contract you’re asked to sign is titled “Contract for service” then it’s likely you’re being offered work as an independent contractor. Richard says “We are here to help anyone who has questions about their employment rights. There is also a legal clinic held at the Bureau on Wednesday mornings so please call for an appointment if you need help.”There is lots of great information on our website www.cab.org.nz to help you know your employment rights, but sometimes it helps to talk about your issue with someone. You can pop into CAB Cambridge at 62 Alpha Street or call 827 4855 and we can help you work through your options.

Cambridge’s Isla Newlands and Gabi Hill joined the Royal NZ Ballet on stage in Auckland last weekend, performing in their production of The Piano: The Ballet. The pair, both friends who attend K.S. School of Dance in Cambridge, auditioned for the show in Wellington in January, just two of over 135 girls from all over New Zealand who auditioned for the role of Flora. Though they didn’t get the main part, they were cast as child extras to appear in the show alongside the Royal NZ Ballet. Isla’s mum Hannah described their experience as “living the dream” – their busy days filled with

two hours of dancing, one hour off, followed by two more hours of dancing, another hour off, and one hour in costume fitting. “It was the best weekend ever,” said Newlands. “Pretty hard going back to school on Monday, but this taste into the professional world of ballet has ignited more passion for dance. They will be buzzing for a long time yet!” The girls, both 11 years old, have been dancing at Kellie Schroer’s K.S. School of Dance since they were around 5 or 6 years old. In recent months they also completed their ballet exams with distinction – the highest mark they could achieve.

Membership drive this weekend Doug Taranaki, Chairman of the Cambridge Model Engineering Society (pictured right), and Corban Fray, the group’s editor (left), hope to see people of all ages turn out for the group’s membership drive this Saturday, March 24. It’s the chance for people from all walks of life to learn a bit more about how the club runs, what it’s all about and how they can get involved. Established locally in 2012, the club is based at the Leamington Domain on Wordsworth St, owning two club trains as well as some members owning locomotives of their own. Each Sunday, weather permitting, members pull the trains out of storage and provide rides for the public, traversing the track around the park grounds and through the tunnel. They would love to see more locals join up to help keep this wonderful community service alive and well, enjoying the trains as well as the joy they bring to the public. Prospective members don’t have to own a train or know much about them, they can learn as they go, and the membership drive will provide the chance to drive a train for themselves – not just adults, but kids too, under supervision of course. “It’s a day for everyone,” explained Corban. “There’s plenty of people who can help you learn.” If it’s raining heavily on Saturday, the membership drive will be postponed to March 31 – just check the Cambridge Model Engineering Facebook page if unsure. Coveredtoe shoes are required for riding and driving the trains.

Hitting the road for charity By Sophie Iremonger

Samantha Hall completed the Hamilton Half Marathon last year.

Cambridge Aluminium Ltd

A Cambridge athlete is aiming to achieve a tough but tremendous goal in six weeks’ time – running a full marathon and raising funds for Lifeline. Samantha Hall, 20, is taking on the Rotorua Marathon on May 5, running 42.2km around Lake Rotorua. “I’ve been doing half marathons for three years now and I’ve always wanted to do a marathon,” Samantha explained. “I think that’s the most significant thing for a runner, to do a marathon. “And I wish to complete it whilst raising funds for Lifeline and providing inspiration and motivation to others.” “That’s a really important charity because I think everyone knows someone or themselves is going to have some kind of mental problems that they have to deal with, and then I found out in September that their government funding was cut, so they just rely on fundraisers now to keep

going.” Samantha has been running the rural roads of Cambridge in preparation for the big event, clocking about 30km on each big run, increasing it by about 2km each fortnight. As is general practice, most people get up to about 35km preparing for a marathon, then cut back on that distance in the three weeks leading up to the event as a form of recovery, before giving their all as they chase

42.2km on the big day. So far, Samantha has raised over half of the $1000 target she hopes to donate to Lifeline, with a twelvemonth membership at Cambridge Fitness Centre up for grabs for the winner of her fundraising raffle. Tickets are $5, available at the centre on Pope Terrace, where Samantha works as a personal trainer. Entry into the raffle, or one-off donations, can also be made at https:// rotoruamarathon2018.

everydayhero.com/nz/ running-for-lives. Samantha is also being supported by King Honey, which has provided honey to sell as part of fundraising. “Any donations, big or small, will be dearly appreciated,” Samantha said. Memories come flooding back By Viv Posselt

Murray Lopes’ memory went into overdrive after reading a recent Cambridge News story on the town pool’s $16.5 million facelift. After seeing the story about the pool’s closure pending the start of a massive redevelopment project, the Morrinsville man remembered the months he spent working on the original pool as a 16-yearold apprentice employed by Street Construction Limited, the company that won the tender to build it. “I was one of a relatively small team, and to this day, it’s one of the most fascinating projects I’ve worked on,” he said. “It was a massive job in terms of scale. There were truck-loads of concrete

– and I mean truck-loads! And every truck that came in, I had something to do with because I was there pretty much from start to finish. It was hard-core all right.” Despite his youth, the pool wasn’t Murray’s first job; he had worked with the company before on an extensive building project at Waikato University. He believes he is one of few people still around who helped build the Cambridge pool in Williamson Street, and said there was absolutely nothing “stock standard” about the project. Work on the original pool began in February 1971 – it was officially opened by the then New Zealand Prime Minister Sir Keith Holyoake in October of the same year.

The 50m pool was built to finished measurements of the day - 164 feet long and 50 feet wide – a rarity in the region. Murray said that because it had to be officially “signed off” as an Olympic pool, measurements had to be accurate to within one-eighth of an inch – something that presented its own challenges given the equipment available at the time. Excavation of the hole came with its own interesting story. A house, rented out at the time, sat plumb in the middle of the pool as it exists today, with excavators and diggers drawing ever closer to its back door as work progressed.

“Then one day we all watched with fascination as a bulldozer came and started tearing it down. No-one was sure if there were people still in there; they’d been there just a day or so earlier. But it turned out they had moved everything – and themselves – out over the weekend!” Another house was linked to the build, this one in quite a different way. Cambridge builders and allied trades joined forces to construct a new threebedroomed home in King Street, which was then sold to raise funds to swell coffers for the new pool.

Landscaping had not yet been completed due to Murray Lopes, who helped build Cambridge swimming pool as a teenager, looking over the weather. copies of newspaper coverage of its construction, sourced from the Cambridge Library.

By Sophie Iremonger Hot on the heels of winning one of the biggest competitions on the water ski calendar earlier in the week, the Moomba Masters in Melbourne, world-record slalom skier Nate Smith stayed “down under” and crossed the ditch for a flying visit to Cambridge last week. The professional water skier spent Thursday at the Karapiro Water Ski Club and Friday at the Piarere Water Ski Club to coach skiers from throughout the country ahead of the regional championships held locally on the weekend – with many achieving personal best scores in the process. “This is really cool, it’s my first time in New Zealand, so it’s neat to see all this for sure,” Smith said. Smith went on to demonstrate his skills on the slalom course, unofficially beating the New

Zealand record several times. For those unfamiliar with the sport, slalom skiing involves riding a single water ski across the wake of a boat, cutting around a buoy and then zooming across to the other side of the wake to loop around another buoy, doing this six times to complete the course. Skill levels are first measured by increasing the boat speed, which is capped at 58kmph, then the 18.25m ski rope is shortened to add difficulty. Smith currently holds the world record for skiing around two and a half buoys with a rope length of just 9.75 metres. The New Zealand slalom record is three buoys at 10.25 metres, and Smith ran the entire six-buoy course several times at that length, much to the amazement of onlookers. “Practice, time on the water,” Smith said when asked how he skis the course so fast. “There’s a

59

whole bunch of things that go into it, but timeFIGURE on3.3.1 the water is probably the most important thing with starting to ski or learning the slalom course.” Smith said the skiers he’d coached here in Cambridge were “pretty good”. His main piece of advice, Smith said, was to “never take the fun out of it…always enjoy the ride, it’s all about having fun out there.” During the two-day coaching run organised by Nautique NZ, world-renowned wakeboarder and fellow Florida resident JD Webb was also on hand to teach aspiring wakeboarders from around the region. Piarere will host the National FIGURE 3.3.2 Barefoot Water Ski Championships over Easter weekend, followed by the National Water Ski Championships April 16 - 21.

More referees needed Submitted by the Cambridge Rugby Referees Association

Recently the Cambridge Rugby Referees Association held their annual barbeque to kick off the season. It was a good chance to catch up and start thinking about the coming season after a few months’ break. Members have been active refereeing Hautapu and Leamington teams in preseason matches. A 7s competition for Waikato Girls Secondary Schools is now in in its fourth and final week. Competition has been keen with fine skills on display. On Monday, February 26 the Association held their AGM with no changes to the executive committee. President Brian Ley introduced patron Rob Waugh who spoke of his 30 years’ involvement with rugby and refereeing. Many changes have been noticed in

his time. Senior Rugby commenced on March 17 with Leamington having home games. Cambridge Referees are always seeking members to assist with the dozens of games that are held each week in the junior grades at the local rugby grounds. Coaching is available as is regular fitness training sessions on Monday evening at Memorial Park. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer Rugby Ref please contact John Gould on 0274871279 or Kevin (Clarky) Clarke on 021152165. Just remember without a ref, players don't have games and that means hundreds of young children missing out on sport and probably sitting in front of computers or on their cell phones.

Gateway of India – Mumbai Mumbai (formerly called Bombay) is a densely populated city on India’s west coast. A financial center, it's India's largest city. On the Mumbai Harbour waterfront stands the iconic Gateway of India stone arch, built by the British Raj in 1924. Offshore, nearby Elephanta Island holds ancient cave temples dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The city is also famous as the heart of the Bollywood film industry, which dazzles moviegoers the world over. The spirit of this city has been described as both contagious and addictive, and there is something for everybody in Mumbai. So, whether you visit Mumbai for work, for pleasure, or to live, it is bound to impress you. A walk around the streets of Colaba or near Churchgate will give you a glimpse of the colonialera buildings the British have left behind. Some of the many monuments that give Mumbai a British look and feel include the Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus, Flora Fountain, High Court, Taj Hotel, Gateway of India and the Asiatic Society. The club will mark that game by inviting members of Hydraulic Hose Distributors Cambridge’s ‘Class of ‘93’ squad to be special guests. That team went unbeaten through the Northern League 1993 season, a feat not since repeated by the club, and supporters want to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the achievement. The 1993 side won 19 matches and drew 3 to win the Northern League’s second division, and now provides the inspiration for a new generation of footballers representing Cambridge. Cambridge Football Club are trying to track down as many of the 1993 squad as possible, inviting them to a pre-match lunch on Easter Saturday and to cheer on the current team. The invitation is also extended to other players from the early 1990s era. The 1993 side was named Waipa’s Sports Team of the Year, an award in common with Cambridge’s current team who won that title for 2017. Winning promotion to the Northern League means Cambridge now plays in the fourth tier of competition, behind the ISPS Handa National Premiership, the Northern League Premier League and the league’s division one. Only five years ago, Cambridge were playing two tiers lower, in the WaiBOP Federation League Two. MORTGAGE MATTERS

Refinancing Your Mortgage By Gavin Lynch – Yes Mortgages Refinancing your mortgage is the process of changing your mortgage lending from your existing lender to a new lender. Refinancing is a common practice for any of these reasons: • You don’t like the lender you are with. You’ve experienced poor service, problems with staff, or high account fees. • You want to borrow more money but the lender won’t allow it. Perhaps you want to consolidate debt, borrow to purchase a rental property or a vehicle, or put working capital into a business. • You have ‘outgrown’ your existing lender and want to move forward. This is common for self-employed people with a growing business, or for investors with an increasing portfolio. • Your lender has asked you to refinance. You may be in arrears with mortgage repayments or you need to restructure your mortgage. Refinancing can involve costs such as break fees from the existing lender, solicitors’ fees, valuation charges etc, but we can help get cash contributions from your new lender to help offset these costs. At Yes Mortgages, we can outline the costs involved and find the best new lender to fit your current situation from the 25 or so different lenders available. In most instances, our service is FREE to you. Generally the benefits of refinancing outweigh the costs involved but bear in mind: Refinancing your mortgage must benefit and add value to YOU. Let us do the work to find you the best lender for your situation.

Success for archers Submitted by Lakeview Archers

February was an exciting month for Lakeview Archers – with announcements of six members being selected to represent NZ in international archery events. Rynard van Tonder and Brian Rowe have both been selected to compete in the World Archery World Cup series stage #1 event which will be held in Shanghai, China, from April 23 – 29. A selection shoot was held in Rotorua in early February which resulted in a full team of 16 archers qualifying for this event. Rynard and Brian are competing in the men’s compound division and have been training hard to ensure that they are ready for this competition – shooting an average of 100 arrows every day. The recent theft of Rynard’s bow has been a devastating blow to this preparation. “It takes hours of shooting and tuning to get your bow shooting correctly, so now I have a lot of work to do to get another bow up to the same standard,” said Rynard. “Given that we are all having to self-fund these trips, the additional expense is also really bad timing.” Not wanting to be outdone, the younger members of the club have also been working hard and the announcement of the 2018 Trans-Tasman Test team saw four Lakeview members named in the 24-archer squad. These are: Abi

Denton (junior ladies compound), Ben Trim (intermediate men’s compound), Andrew Syme (intermediate men’s compound) and Levi Wesford (club men’s compound). Lakeview Archers are based at 265 Horahora Rd, 20 minutes south of Cambridge.

Four Lakeview archers were named on the 2018 NZ Trans-Tasman Test team: Ben Trim, Levi Wesford, Abi Denton and Andrew Syme.

All go at Maadi in Twizel Cambridge High and St Peter’s School rowers are in Twizel this week competing amongst 2283 secondary school students for national titles in the 2018 Maadi Cup – the national championships for school rowing. Rowing on the beautiful waters of Lake Ruataniwha, the St Peter’s girls’ under 18 coxed four won their heat on Monday to make the final, set for Friday, which will determine the winners of the Dawn Cup. Rebecca Leigh, also from St Peters School, won her heat on Monday in the girls’ under 17 single sculls – the largest event in the regatta with 64 entries. As the recent North Island Secondary School champion, Leigh will stand a good chance against winners from five other heats in the quarter final, with the A final set for Friday afternoon – the winner of which will receive a new skiff for their school in addition to a gold medal. Racing on Tuesday saw St Peter’s under 18 novice rowers take to the water in quadruple sculls, a new event this year, where the St Peter’s girls won their heat to make the semi-final, and the boys won their

heat to progress straight to the final on Saturday. St Peter’s School also performed well in the girls’ under 18 eight, winning their heat and moving forward to the A final on Saturday. Cambridge High School’s rowers have shown fine form, with U17 boys single sculler Seth Hope finishing first in his heat, due to contest

Cambridge horse wins at Trentham By Candice Gollan

Cambridge-trained Daytona Red produced an impressive win when taking out the Listed Yealands Family Wines New Zealand St Leger (2500m) at Trentham on Saturday. The son of Sebring, who is trained by Shaun Ritchie, Daytona Red beat the race favourite Felaar in a gallant effort in the St Leger and there is discussion around what premier distance races he will feature in next season. “He was certainly impressive today and there is a lot of improvement to come from him,” Ritchie said. Ritchie will decide on Daytona Red’s immediate future after he has consulted with co-owner Peter Mitchell, whose

colours were carried to many victories by the legendary Bonecrusher. “The initial plan though was to give him a break and then get him back during winter to build up for some of the spring and summer cups,” Ritchie said. “We’ll wait and see how he is when he gets home,” he added. Daytona Red and Jockey, Matthew Cameron, settled at the end of the field before they began to pick up ground and make their move 600m from the finish post. At the home straight turn, they went wide and made their move. Managing to hold off race favourite, Felaar to win by two and three-quarter lengths. Right: Daytona Red had win at Trentham. Hinerangi makes it three with victory in 1600 metres Progressive Cambridge mare Hinerangi enhanced her burgeoning reputation as she completed a winning treble at Trentham on the weekend, leading all the way over 1600 metres. Despite resuming from an eight week break from the track, the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman trained four-yearold never looked in danger as rider Matt Cameron rated her nicely in front to score a comfortable three-quarters of a length victory. “It’s not easy to lead all the way at

Trentham but she ended up getting a pretty comfortable trip where she could dictate to them,” said Forsman. “Matt rated her nicely and she found a good kick when he asked her to go.” Forsman believes maturity has been the key to the mare’s improved showings, with better things to come next season. “We’re in no hurry with her and will continue to take her through the grades but eventually you would think she could certainly get to stakes company based on what she has shown us.”

Easter

For Christians, regardless of which church they attend, Easter is the most important time of the year, even more so than Christmas. Easter is the foundation of the Christian faith when we acknowledge the death of Christ on Good Friday and then celebrate his resurrection on Easter Day, this year April 1st. Leading up to Easter is the period of Lent when Christians are called to reflect on their life; some "give up" a habit (eg chocolate, smoking) as a form of penitence. Holy Week then begins with Palm Sunday, this year 25th March, which commemorates Jesus' entry into Jerusalem and precedes the events which unfold later in the week.

Most churches have special services in the week preceding Easter. Here at St Andrews, we have daily services leading up to Maundy Thursday, which commemorates the Last Supper, then follows Good Friday, the day of Christ's crucifixion with a service of hymns, prayer and reflection. Saturday sees the Easter vigil and Sunday Easter Day.

Whatever your church affiliation, ( you don't have to be an Anglican) and whether you go to church regularly or not, we welcome you to attend all or some of our Holy Week services which are listed in the attached advertisement and on the St Andrews website.

Badminton Club: All welcome Members of the Cambridge Badminton Club are hoping to see more locals join the club, particularly junior-age players with former NZ representative Reon McFarlane coaching the club’s under-16 players this term. But it’s not just junior players, people of all ages and abilities are being encouraged to get involved. Tina Skinner, the former juniors coach and a member of 15 years, said the club had been “so friendly and welcoming” when she joined. “It doesn’t matter what experience you’ve got when you walk through the door,” said Tina. “I had young children when I started, and I found that a lot of sports weren’t suitable to be able to take them, whereas here

(inside the clubroom next to the court)… they’ve got a toy box and they’re quite safe in here… that was a huge for me. And it’s one of the sports that you can just pick up and anyone can play, no matter what your age is.” “We never turn anyone away… the only things they need are non-marking sports shoes,” said Pearl Martin, the club’s treasurer and stalwart member of 38 years. The club’s oldest member is 87, playing along with the Golden Oldies 50+ group on Thursdays, $4 each time with no membership required. The full details of when the club meets each week is detailed in the ‘Regular Events’ section towards the back of the paper.

Conference Venues and Events

Choosing a conference venue When looking for a venue for your next conference, there are a host of factors to consider. First, decide where you will be holding the event. For many businesses, it makes sense to choose a central location and have participants travel to that. Others may find that attendees will primarily be from one area, so it makes sense to hold it there. If people are travelling from out of town, consider whether they will need to stay over and if so, what is the proximity of their accommodation to the proposed venue?

Check and see if the proposed venue has “breakout rooms”, if you will be doing any sort of group work. Being able to split into a

Also consider what will actually be presented. Do you have powerpoints or videos, do you need a datashow, and will you require internet access? What about whiteboards and other materials – will the venue provide these? Will participants need to work on devices with WIFI access?

If people are flying in to attend, think about how they will get to the venue from the airport. Also consider the format of the conference and the nature of any workshops that are planned. Get a run sheet from any guest presenters and make sure that this is compatible with the venue.

more private space as required will make a difference to the quality of the experience for attendees. Are you wanting an intimate feel to the event, with the audience and speakers on the same level, or are you after a larger, more auditoriumstyle of setting?

Find out if there is an extra charge for this and go for a “test drive” of technology before the conference gets underway – there’s nothing worse than a technology glitch to ruin the flow of an event. Once you have worked out what the physical needs are, including easy access for any disabled participants, you will need to consider the catering arrangements for the day. Some venues offer lunch and snacks,

while others allow you to bring in outside caterers. Remember that many people have special dietary needs, so ask participants for that information as they sign up.

Dehydration is the enemy of productivity, as is tiredness so if possible make sure there’s a suitable area for short breaks outside for some fresh air.

Check with the venue that they will have water available at all times, and whether they have staff that can keep an eye on this during the course of the day.

And finally, if you are unsure about organising a conference, ask your network for recommendations to make sure your event has every chance of success.

For me, Easter is a long weekend of good food, fun, friends and family. For many people it follows Lent, a time of fasting. So no wonder Easter Sunday is a day of feasting – everything from chocolate eggs and rabbits, to party food, roasted meats, decadent cakes and desserts. In the northern hemisphere, eggs are given to

Tempting Easter Treats

celebrate Easter and spring. Hens’ eggs were originally decorated with dye or paint but these have been replaced with chocolate eggs. The tradition of hiding eggs for children to find on Easter Sunday – supposedly brought by the Easter bunny – is still a game played in our family. In Europe there is a general tradition – not

confined to Christians – that Easter is the time to start enjoying the season’s new lamb. An Italian favourite is spit-roasted suckling lamb while the Greeks favour baby lamb, plainly roasted. However, I have chosen to slow-roast our New Zealand lamb in a Greek style. If you plan to make your own Easter breads here

are some tips for using yeast: It should always be fresh – check the use-by date on the jar; use high-grade flour – it is stronger and has more gluten; work in an even, warm atmosphere – draughts should be avoided; and mixing and kneading must be thorough to incorporate the yeast.

SLOW-COOKED GREEK EASTER LAMB – Deliciously tasty and tender. 10 small cloves garlic 2kg leg lamb 10-12 fresh bay leaves 3 lemons, quartered lengthways 3 tablespoons olive oil flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 cup each: water, pitted green olives 3 tablespoons honey

remove the meat to a warm platter. Cover with foil and a heavy towel. Rest for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, strain the liquid into a small saucepan

LAYERED EGG SALAD and add the olives and honey. Stir well and simmer, until reduced. Serve with the lamb. Great served with smashed potatoes. Serves about 8.

Place half the unpeeled garlic cloves into the slow cooker. Peel and thinly slice the remainder. If the lamb leg has the shank end still attached it may have to be removed for the leg to fit the slow cooker. With the tip of a sharp knife make small slits on the top of the lamb. Insert the sliced garlic into the slits. Scatter half the bay leaves and the lemon quarters into the slow cooker. Place the lamb on top — plus the shank if removed. Drizzle with the olive oil, season and dust with cinnamon. Cover with the remaining bay leaves. Pour the water down the inside of the cooker. Place the lid on and cook on high for 6 hours. Carefully

Great to take on picnics to serve with cold meats. 3 cups mixed baby salad leaves 1 cup sango sprouts 2-3 tablespoons lemon juice salt and pepper to taste 4 hard-boiled eggs, thickly sliced 2 cups shredded carrots 1 cup peas, blanched 1 red capsicum, seeded and thinly sliced 1 cup crispy egg noodles

YUMMY HOT CROSS BUN PUDDING – Portions can be reheated in the microwave. 6 small hot cross buns 50g unsalted butter, softened 4 tablespoons apricot jam 1/2 cup caster sugar 4 medium eggs 1 cup milk 2 cups cream 1 teaspoon pure vanilla essence 1 star anise 2 teaspoons finely grated orange rind

Slowly pour over the buns. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours to allow the buns to absorb the liquid. Preheat the oven to 170°C. Place the baking dish in a large roasting pan. Pour boiling water into the pan to come halfway up the dish.

Cover the dish with foil. Bake for 40 minutes and then remove the foil. Continue baking for a further 15-20 minutes until golden on top. Great served dusted with icing sugar and accompanied by whipped cream or ice cream. Serves 8.

Lightly butter a deep 1.5 litre baking dish. Cut the buns in half. Spread with the butter then the jam. Sandwich the buns together. Place the buns in the dish, crosses facing up. Whisk the caster sugar and eggs together in a mixing bowl until well combined. Place the milk, cream, vanilla essence and star anise in a saucepan and bring to the boil on medium heat. Remove from the heat and pour onto the egg/sugar mixture and mix well. Strain through a sieve into a jug.

BRANDERSON HOMES LTD

Combine the baby salad greens and sango sprouts. In a large deep, straight-sided, glass salad bowl (about 18cm in diameter) place one cup of the salad combo. Sprinkle with a little lemon juice, salt and pepper. Stand half the egg slices against the side of the bowl. Make a layer of half each of the carrots, peas, capsicum and noodles. Repeat the layers ending with a layer of baby salad leaves. Serve with your favourite salad dressing. Serves 6.

Sunday March 18 One of the new Community Trikes coaches, Glenda Roger. By Aaron Ure, Community Trikes coordinator The Avantidrome Community Trikes program has been steadily gaining a strong following in the last three years. It has surpassed any dreams of the original coaches and riders, morphing from a small innocuous entity on the fringes of society, into a large community of individuals who choose not to be bound by ability, age or gender stereotypes. Last year Avantidrome Community Trikes provided a staggering 3667 rides on site and supported the community trike riding program, Wheels In Motion, to hold a generational Trike festival, the first in the Waikato if not North Island. In 2018 the team are pushing the envelope even further by running morning sessions each week day and a few early afternoon sessions under the supervision and guidance of two new coaches, Rene and Glenda. Both coaches have a history of leadership and support within their communities and in the disability sector and both are passionate about trikes being a normal part of life and the local cycling culture. Their unique perspectives and experiences make them ideally suited for working with community groups and individuals of any age. Surprisingly, our youngest

Monday March 19

6.25pm – Rubbish fire on Tauwhare Rd. current rider is 19 and our eldest is 98. Within that huge age gap there are as many reasons that riders choose to come back week after week. Some come initially due to recovery from illness, balance issues or to defy the myth that frailty is a mandatory appendage to ageing. For the majority, it is not long before they find companionship and a social group that can accept them for where and who they are. One of the many benefits our riders comment on, is their increased mobility and enjoyment in life as a direct result of riding and the freedom it brings them. If you have not yet tried riding the trikes at the Avantidrome, come down and give Rene or Glenda and their team of volunteers the opportunity to show you how great it can be to regain some control over life, moving at your speed because that is what you want to do. Remember, it is never too late to enjoy life and you are never too old to learn something new. Our sessions run for 45 minutes, cost only $5 and booking are necessary as we do get busy. Just ring the front desk 0800 VELODROME or 07 823 1421.

I CAN ONLY IMAGINE

SUNDAY: 1.35, 7.20PM - MONDAY: 11.10AM, 8.10PM TUESDAY: 3.15, 8.10PM (M) (R16)

Based on an incredible true-life story. “When Bart Millard (J. Michael Finley) wrote this title song in 1999, he had no way of knowing it would become the most played Christian song of all time when his group MercyMe released it as a lead single of their ‘Almost There’ album in 2001. Bart grew up with his abusive, alcoholic dad, Arthur (Dennis Quaid), in Greenville, Texas. His mother left one day, leaving Bart alone to suffer from his father’s incessant negativity and beatings. After injuring his ankle playing football in high school, Bart takes choir where he discovers his musical talent. When he leaves home for college, he turns his back on his Dad, though he stays in touch with his supportive grandmother, Memaw (Oscarwinner Cloris Leachman). He connects with Shannon (Madeline Carroll) from high school and they grow close. On an impulse, he returns home to visit his dad to discover that something incredible has happened. I Can Only Imagine is probably the best film of the Christian genre that I have seen so far.” Rose

We rate this film along with WONDER. A young coming-of-age teenage boy, Simon (Si) Spier, goes through a different kind of Romeo and Juliet story. It’s a funny, heartfelt and honest coming-of-age story about the thrilling ride of finding oneself and falling in love. Every generation has a great love story. This one is ours. From the producers of The Fault in Our Stars comes Love Simon, a funny and heartfelt film about the thrilling ride of finding yourself and falling in love. Thoroughly recommended for teens and upwards – truly likeable.

Neil and Matt say it’s the film Transformers should have been – they thought it was great for the young at heart. Jake Pentecost is a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity's victory against the monstrous Kaiju. Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through cities and bring the world to its knees, Jake is given one last chance by his estranged sister, Mako Mori, to live up to his father's legacy.
