Cambridge Lifeskills’ manager and clinical leader Sandy Wesford (left) and board member Karen May (right) say the increasing number of referrals has created a waiting list which keeps growing daily.

SOS from Lifeskills

By Claire Castle

With a deluge of referrals and a serious shortfall in funds, Cambridge Lifeskills has put out an urgent call for help. Lifeskills – a free youth counselling

service – has been going in Cambridge for 25 years, and manager and clinical leader Sandy Wesford has been on the team for 20 of those. Currently carrying the longest waiting list for kids she’s seen, a combination of the pressures

of modern life on kids, a growing acceptance that it’s OK to ask for help, and Cambridge’s growing population, has caused an influx of young people seeking help. It’s an influx that will just have to wait, with Sandy saying

that anyone referred from now will be added to the growing waiting list. High priority or risky situations may be able to be seen earlier, but “it’s hard to Continued on page 3 Cou

Cambridge newsroom update Once, when my daughter was about four, I was rushing around cleaning up, trying to excavate the table from under the growing washing pile and throwing the hoover around for a quick onceover. “Who’s coming over, mummy?” she asked, which I thought was very observant of her and also a bit of an indictment on my negligent attitude to the housework. This phenomenon of having a frantic clean up when the visitors come over is a well-known one, and it strikes me as extremely weird that when rest homes are audited they are generally told ahead of time. I don’t know what happens in those audits, but I have to say that I agree with Consumer NZ and Robert Love, the son of the late Freda Love, who has written

to the Minister of Health demanding more rigorous monitoring of rest homes. To be meaningful, monitoring should always be a surprise. Otherwise what’s stopping them from doing the obvious thing – putting their best foot forward – when that might not be the reality of the day-to-day situation. If a four-year-old can see what happens when you know the visitors are coming, surely the watchdogs that are supposed to be keeping our vulnerable, elderly people safe should also be aware of this. We have also been thinking a bit about Daffodil Day in the office this week. For me, I will be remembering my grandparents, who were both taken by cancer. With funds for the Cancer Society raised in the

region used in the region, I hope everyone will dig deep and push Cambridge’s total over last year’s figure of $14,180. Because cancer is something that touches us all, in one way or another. Also this week we’ve got CountryLife, our monthly pull-out about all things rural, including a new scheme where Kiwi farmers can extend a hand of friendship to their Aussie counterparts. Happy reading, everyone.

Those with a keen eye may have noticed a few manholes on Empire St that say, “Hamilton City Council”. We noticed it recently and wondered why they were there and asked the council about it. A spokesperson for Waipa District Council explained that it was probably because the old manholes had a problem with rocking back and forth slightly, causing a safety issue as well as an annoying sound whenever cars passed over. Hamilton City Council (HCC) had several non-rock manhole covers left over from the ITM Hamilton 400 V8

Supercars street race. Early on in the event organisers had problems with standard manholes lifting during racing, so HCC ordered a bunch of non-rock manhole covers, with city branding, which feature special lugs to prevent rocking, and some including a locking mechanism. With the event now defunct, and plenty of non-rock manhole covers left over, some of the were repurposed here in Waipa. So, if you see a Hamilton City Council manhole cover in Cambridge, rest assured you’re still in the Waipa District.

SOS from Cambridge Lifeskills Continued from page 1 choose priority cases on the waiting list, because for each child the situation they are in is urgent,” board member Karen May said, adding that Lifeskills would like to have no waiting list at all. The most common cause of referrals to the service is anxiety, with the second most-common being family separations, “and for a lot of our kids, there’s real trauma,” Sandy explained. With some parents being unable to be in the same room as each other, a number of cases have required a double allocation of resources as parents come to counselling with their child individually. “It takes extra time to navigate between two parents in conflict,” Sandy said, which

puts more pressure on the organisation. With a quarter-century history in Cambridge, Lifeskills is also a seeing the result of their reputation for success, with one referral every day last week adding to the mounting waiting list. “Over 25 years, we (Lifeskills) has moved from an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff to a fence at the top, but kids are pushing at the fence now,” she said. The organisation is continuing with fundraising and applying for grants to meet the shortfall in their budget, however board member Karen May said that grants will not pay wages, and “our biggest cost is wages”. With paying privately for counselling not an option for many families, the

organisation is reluctant to charge for their services for fear of preventing young people from getting the help they need. But it might come to that unless the community steps in to boost the coffers and help Lifeskills engage another counsellor to clear the waiting list, Sandy said. It’s not just the children themselves and their immediate family that benefit from a successful counselling outcome, either, with Cambridge’s late police chief Gordon Grantham (who helped establish Lifeskills), putting the town’s low youth crime rate partly down to the intervention the service provides. Put simply, happy kids are less likely to go off the rails, which is better for everyone.

As well as seeking one-off donations, Lifeskills has a Club 83 initiative, where businesses or individuals can pay $83 a month – around the cost of a cup of coffee a day – to support the service. This adds up to $1,000 every year, and it’s tax deductible. “It’s locals getting behind locals,” Karen said, and $83 a month can make a huge difference to Cambridge’s young people. If you would like to get behind Lifeskills, phone Sandy on 021 190 1760 or visit www.cambridgelifeskills.co.nz for more information. Or you can donate direct into ANZ Bank: 06-0301-0229802-000 with your name as a reference.

Disabled ride Bupa St Kilda falls short car running By Claire Castle

The Cambridge Model Engineering Society took its new disabled ride car out for its first outing on Sunday, giving members of the public with disabilities the chance to ride the train safely. The ride car features a ramp at the back, allowing wheelchair users to wheel onto a platform accompanied by their caregiver if required. Alternatively, they can be harnessed into a special chair at the front of the car, with room for their caregiver behind. The society was grateful to local organisations for their support in building the car, which was put to good use on Sunday. The trains will run from 10am – 3pm at the Leamington Domain on the first and third Sunday of the month until November, weather permitting. They will run every Sunday over summer.

Less than a year after Bupa St Kilda was ordered to pay $10,000 to the son of a 92-year-old woman they failed to provide adequate care for, the Cambridge home was found to be falling short in several areas in a surprise audit in June. Robert Love, whose mother Freda Love was a resident at Bupa St Kilda for 156 days until her death in January 2017, has written to the Minister of Health asking for an urgent investigation into Bupa St Kilda and Bupa’s relationship with the DHB. The unannounced audit on June 7 found that the Cambridge home was fully meeting only four of the seven criteria that were assessed. Among other things, the audit found that from January to May of this year staff had repeatedly failed to respond to call bells within the expected three-minute timeframe, with some not answered for more than 20 minutes. Despite this, the chief operating officer and lead nurse for Bupa Villages and Aged Care New Zealand, Carolyn Cooper, maintained that residents’ safety was not at risk. The Waikato DHB had written to Bupa following the areas of shortcoming identified, stating that it “did not find that current residents were at risk or that care was not safe”, she said. “The areas for improvement in the June 7 audit

were rated low to moderate risk by the auditor,” Carolyn added. She declined to explain what would happen if a resident was experiencing a significant medical event and calling for help, referring back to her original statement. A spokesperson from the Waikato District Health Board (WDHB) said the level of risk ascribed to the delays in answering call bells was determined by the independent auditors and accepted by the DHB. “We have determined that waiting for more than 10 minutes is unacceptable, have communicated to the facility that this is a material breach of contract obligations, and that they are required to undertake corrective actions to address this finding.” The unannounced audit was then followed up by a clinical records review carried out in early July. In that review, an independent clinical practitioner selected five randomised files and spent two days on site reviewing and tracking all documentation relating to those files, however Robert said he believes scheduled audits serve little purpose. “All audits, to be meaningful, should be unannounced,” he said in his letter to the Minister. It’s a view shared by Consumer New Zealand, the organisation Robert turned to after health and disability watchdogs had failed to rectify the situation.

For their part, Bupa has issued an apology to the residents and relatives of Bupa St Kilda Care Home. “An external audit on 7 June identified some areas that require improvement. We take these findings extremely seriously and have taken further action to continue to improve quality at the care home,” Carolyn Cooper concluded. The DHB spokesperson said they have no plans for any more unannounced audits of the facility, instead waiting for the outcome of the certification audit scheduled for October 1-2 this year. The June audit found: • Staff failed to respond to call bells within the home’s expected threeminute timeframe, with some call bells left unanswered for more than 20 minutes. This was assessed from records over a time period from January to May this year. • Care planning standards varied, with two instances where there were no plans in place to treat residents’ medical needs. Four out of 12 long-term care plans had not been evaluated within the expected six-month timeframe. • Corrective action plans weren’t in place to address improvements required following complaints and there was a lack of evidence to show residents’ family members were involved in care planning. • Additional staff training was required, with the registered nurse designated as the “wound nurse champion” not having received adequate training.

New opportunities for Cambridge outlined By Viv Posselt

Prospects for grasping new opportunities for the promotion of Cambridge are looking good, says the recently-installed Destination Cambridge CEO, Michelle ‘Miff’ Macdiarmid. Speaking at her first Destination Cambridge AGM, held in the town hall earlier this month, she said many major events were planned for Cambridge in the coming year. “They will put us on the map even more,” she said. “There are so many potential opportunities and avenues to promote Cambridge and develop new tourist products and markets. All opportunities need to be looked at with sustainability in mind and retaining our uniqueness.” Miff said Destination Cambridge was incorporated in March 2017. The move to become a destination tourist organisation had re-focused their

efforts from that of service to one of positioning the town as an attractive visitor destination; relationships had been further strengthened throughout the past year to advance that position. The ongoing promotion of Cambridge through i-SITE had brought almost 39,000 people through the doors – or over 100 a day – during that time, she said, and a new Destination Cambridge website went live in September last year. Further online developments are underway: “We plan to develop the social media space in such a way that it is directed to our target market.” Miff said revenue through i-SITE over the past 12 months had been similar to that of the previous year, despite several major events being held locally during the previous year. Feedback also suggested there was greater customer satisfaction. Other plans are to make broader use of the remote Destination Cambridge kiosk

which has already been seen in action at various major events, she said, and other i-SITE applications of technology would be useful. Both Miff and Destination Cambridge chairman Philip Coles paid tribute to former CEO Roger Gordon, and photographer Michael Jeans was commended for work which Miff said, “brought the town to life”. Also speaking at the meeting were Maree Kaati, high performance operations manager for Triathlon NZ, and Liz Stolwyk, Waipa District councillor and Mighty River Domain manager. Liz outlined Mighty River Domain’s development as a successful functions

venue and gave a run-down of new events coming in 2019. She said the Don Rowlands Centre, initially earmarked as a gymnasium but later turned into an events centre, has five conference rooms available for functions. “There is a conference or corporate function going on every day. We can hold up to five a day – and we do that sometimes.” Maree, whose role sees her work out of the Avantidrome, said the facility had really “put Cambridge on the map”. “The Avantidrome caters for a whole range of people – not just the high-performance athletes. It is a tremendous asset for Cambridge.”

Students shave for good cause A group of St Peter’s students ran a Shave for a Cure event at the school recently, raising $1250 for charity. The Leukaemia & Blood Cancer NZ fundraiser saw twelve students get their heads shaved in front of an audience of students and staff on Friday, August 10, some of which were donating rather long locks for the cause. Samantha Reid goes under the razor. The generous group of shave-ees included Jena Denton, Ella Hines, Marija Miletic, Bronson Clark, Jack Douglas, Dyson Down, George Thorpe, Christian Stewart, Rokko Lassey, Mac Livingstone, Samantha Reid and Brennan Peterson. The event was sponsored by Vivo Hair & Beauty New Zealand, and organised by Milli Clark, Bronson Clark, Lauren Hardgrave, Aoife Brosnan and Charlotte Craig. Paint the town yellow By Claire Castle

Cambridge’s new Daffodil Day coordinator, Nicky White, is hoping retailers will get behind the annual event next Friday and ‘paint the town yellow’ – adding the colour to window displays in honour of the day. “It would be great to see the whole town get behind such an important cause, even if they don’t have a counter box of daffodil pins or anyone out the front selling,” she said. It’s Nicky’s first time organising the Cancer Society fundraiser in Cambridge, coming in “quite late in the game” around five weeks ago. “Like everyone else, I have been affected by cancer with family and friends,” Nicky explained, adding that when the opportunity came up to organise the appeal in Cambridge she jumped at the chance. With 70 volunteers and growing on the books, 20 counter boxes and nine stands around Cambridge and Leamington, and collection running next Friday and Saturday (August 31 and September 1), Nicky Last year, Daffodil Day raised $14,180 in Cambridge, part of the $648,462 raised in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty. Nationally, the appeal raised $4.5 million to support the work of the Cancer Society. The society offers accommodation to all major hospitals in New Zealand for patients if their treatment requires frequent hospital visits, but they don’t live nearby. This service alone cost $4 million last year. The Cancer Society is also the largest charitable funder in cancer research in the country, spending $4.8 million on research in 2017/2018. This year more than 1,400 volunteers will help at over 250 collection sites in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty, with every dollar donated supporting local people with cancer, their whānau, friends and carers. Money raised will also fund education, advocacy and cancer research. People can also donate online at daffodilday.org.nz or at any ANZ branch.

has her work cut out for her. “Lots of loyal volunteers have come back this year, plus heaps of new people to Cambridge and young people who want to help,” she said. “But we could always do with more help.” If you are interested in helping with the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day appeal, please phone Nicky on 020 4156 1954.

Book club gets down to business By Poppy Wortman It’s one for the books, for those on the same page. Chamber of Commerce member Tracey Olivier has started a book club for like-minded locals with a business focus. Meeting on the second Friday of each month, the group discusses their latest reads over lunch and shares their findings and recommendations with each other. “It actually stemmed from a bit of a selfish reason.” Tracey said, “I had a massive pile of business books I was

wanting to get through, but other things would get in the way and I wouldn’t have time to read them. “I thought, ‘There’s probably quite a few people who feel like this’, so I approached Tania, the Chamber CEO, and we decided to give it a go.” With the first meeting drawing in six participants, it was evident Tracey was right. “We’ve now had two meetings, and the group has grown,” she said. “And in an informal and relaxed environment, it just gives yourself some reading accountability when it

Anyone is welcome!” Chamber of Commerce CEO Tania Whiteford said the Chamber warmly welcomes Tracey’s initiative as a fabulous way to learn, share and connect, all key to supporting business. “And being headed by Tracey, with her passion and energy being brought to the table, furthers it as a great way to putting an hour in yourself.” Each meeting, every member brings along a book they have read and shares it with the group – their perspective and what they took from it. Books are then exchanged, with ‘who has what’ recorded down to keep track of everything. Tracey has also created a little form that is put into the books on completion, where each reader rates the read, writes in a nutshell what it was about, what aspect proved good for them and answers the question, “What are you going to do about it now?” “Not everyone has the same needs in business, so a book that might work for one person may not be relatable for another. So instead of chugging through a book someone isn’t interested in, rather everyone hears a synopsis and a bit of what it’s about, and can make the decision of, ‘Oh man, I really need to read that book’ and add it to their wishlist, or, ‘Nope, that’s not really what I need right now’. “And rather than everyone reading the same book each month, we get a

This year the event moved to the Don Rowlands Centre to accommodate for the nine schools taking part, run by a group of Cambridge High School’s senior students. Year 13 student BJ Tupaea said it was great to see families turn out and show their support and thought the students had done an “awesome” job performing. “It’s just good to see young people getting up there and giving it a go,” he said. “It embraces Maaori culture and I think that’s our main objective,” added fellow student organiser, Taasha Connon. “We’re not looking for perfection, we want them to give it a go. “They just give so much and that’s what we want to see.” Marcel wished to give special thanks to Ngaati Koroki Kahukura for their support, “not only at the poowhiri but also with regards to the venue which proved to be a great environment for the festival that is only going to get bigger Continued next page

Help with the cost of insulation

“If your home does not have insulation yet, now is a good time to do something about it.” This is a timely suggestion from the Cambridge Citizens Advice team. “A properly insulated home is easier to heat in this chilly weather and will be a comfortable temperature during those balmy summer days.” The Warm Up New Zealand: Healthy Homes Programme, which provided a 50 per cent subsidy to low income homeowners and landlords with low income tenants, has been replaced by the Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme. This Programme started on 1 July 2018 for low-income homeowners. It provides a grant that covers 67% of the cost of ceiling and underfloor insulation in the home. You can find out whether you are eligible by contacting a registered insulation provider on the Energywise website, www.energywise. govt.nz. If you are renting and your landlord has missed out on the Warm Up New Zealand grant, they have a legal obligation to have insulation installed in the rental property by July 1, 2019. To help keep your home warm, there are strategies that won’t cost too much, such as blocking draughts under doors and around windows, putting rugs on your floor and covering your windows with lined curtains. If you have a SuperGold Card, remember to ask for a discount on heating products and the Winter Heating Payment is presently being paid to those who receive Work and Income Benefits and Superannuation. If you want to talk this or any issue through, call in to Citizens Advice, 62 Alpha St, Cambridge between 9am and 4.30pm weekdays. Alternatively, you can telephone on 07 827 4855, free on 0800 367 222, or send an email to: cambridge@cab.org.nz. More information can be found at www.cab.org.nz

Haks Challenge Metcalfe to coach Magic a huge success

By Sophie Iremonger

Brian Prescott, the local ultramarathon runner fundraising for his daughter Anna to get a new custom-built running chair, has reported that the big fundraising event earlier this month was a resounding success, smashing their fundraising target with a grand total of $14,685 – meaning Anna will also be able to benefit from extra running chair parts such as off-road wheels and bike attachments. Several dozen people took part in the Yak Club’s “24 Hour Haks Challenge”

over August 11 and 12, organised by Brian’s friend Joey Uden and his “boot camp” fitness group, the Yak Club. “Anna absolutely loved being carried to the top,” said Brian, who himself reached the summit 14 times, totalling 56km in distance and 5.5km in ascent. The total number of times participants reached the summit combined to 186 ascents, making 837 combined kilometres. “I was blown away with all the support Anna and family received from The Yaks, and other runners, walkers, businesses and those who came out to support us,” Brian said.

A train of over 30 people helped carry Anna Prescott to the top of the Hakarimatas to kick off the 24 Hour Haks Challenge.

Former Silver Fern and Cambridge local Amigene Metcalfe was this week announced as the new head coach of the Waikato-BOP Magic netball team for the 2019 ANZ Premiership. The former St Peter’s School physed and health teacher said it was an honour to coach for a franchise she had been heavily involved with. “I feel very proud to have been given the opportunity to coach a team I love,” she said. “It’s certainly a role I know comes with huge responsibility and expectations and I look forward to the exciting challenges ahead.” “We are really excited to have someone with Amigene’s knowledge of the elite game and someone who has a strong connection with the players and also the region,” said Magic chief executive Rohan West. “It is a unique position that we have our Waikato-BOP Magic player #1 now coaching the next generation of Magic netballers.” Metcalfe led Waikato-BOP Netball to a number of titles as a mid-courter during the former National Bank Cup, and captained the side during the inaugural ANZ Championship season. She was also the club’s High Performance co-ordinator and more recently the assistant coach during the ANZ Premiership. But netball isn’t the only sport that helped Amigene Metcalfe earn a star on the Cambridge Sports Walk of Fame. She represented New Zealand as a sprinter and long jumper as a junior, winning a medal at the 1988 Pan Pacific

MORTGAGE MATTERS

Refinancing Your Mortgage By Gavin Lynch – Yes Mortgages Refinancing your mortgage is the process of changing your mortgage lending from your existing lender to a new lender. Refinancing is a common practice for any of these reasons: • You don’t like the lender you are with. You’ve experienced poor service, problems with staff, or high account fees. • You want to borrow more money but the lender won’t allow it. Perhaps you want to consolidate debt, borrow to purchase a rental property or a vehicle, or put working capital into a business. • You have ‘outgrown’ your existing lender and want to move forward. This is common for self-employed people with a growing business, or for investors with an increasing portfolio. • Your lender has asked you to refinance. You may be in arrears with mortgage repayments or you need to restructure your mortgage. Refinancing can involve costs such as break fees from the existing lender, solicitors’ fees, valuation charges etc, but we can help get cash contributions from your new lender to help offset these costs. At Yes Mortgages, we can outline the costs involved and find the best new lender to fit your current situation from the 25 or so different lenders available. In most instances, our service is FREE to you. Generally the benefits of refinancing outweigh the costs involved but bear in mind: Refinancing your mortgage must benefit and add value to YOU. Let us do the work to find you the best lender for your situation.

The show Classical Hits will feature some of the best-known music by the great composers Franz Schubert, Claude Debussy and Pyotr Tchaikovsky, as well as the world premiere of a new work by acclaimed New Zealand composer Gillian Whitehead. The selection has been especially chosen to appeal to both regular concert goers and those new to seeing the national orchestra perform live. Public toilet now open at community garden After five years of discussions and work towards the project, Cambridge Community Gardens finally has a public toilet. “Yipee! The new toilet is here,” said Alison Hucke, co-ordinator of the Cambridge Community Garden, who explained that thanks to the new toilet, the group will now be able to extend the hours they work on weekends and during the week, and can now invite families to join in at working bees. “This will make it a much more productive enterprise and our volunteers will be able to provide much more free produce for those who need it most,” she said. The project really got going in May this year, when sewerage and water pipes were installed at the section, and on July 4 the wheelchair-accessible toilet was delivered, re-purposed and revamped after previously being removed from the Wordsworth St

park in Leamington. Late last month it was connected to underground services and a sump for storm water was installed. Then this month the area around the toilet was grassed and a new fence installed. “The toilet is now open but we are still waiting for an accessibility ramp and paper towels to be installed to finish it off,” Alison explained, thanking Waipa District Council and all those who had made the project possible. Next door’s Payne Park, currently beautified with inseason daffodils, will also benefit from the new toilet.

Those wanting to take produce from the Cambridge Community Garden simply need to put in a little work at the garden, weeding, watering, whatever needs to be done, in order to take home food. Or they can bring their own homemade or homegrown goods to trade from the “crop swap” stand at the front. To find out more, visit the public Facebook group: CCG Cambridge Community Garden, or just pop in and have a chat when you next see the volunteers at work. The gardens are located at the river-end of Vogel St, across from Resthaven.

Karen and Kim Cambridge Sixes super stars By Clare Coles, Cambridge Bridge Club Kim Grounds and Karen Payne have won the Intermediate section of the Cambridge Sixes Bridge Tournament, held at the Sir Don Rowlands Centre on the banks of Lake Karapiro last weekend. With strong opposition from 44 other intermediate pairs, the pressure was on from round one when they obtained the lead. By the end of round five they had succeeded in five significant wins. When they entered the last round, they were ahead of their closest opponents and while they did have their first loss, they had done enough to hang on! They were particularly delighted as they came second last year. Their colourful team of six players, two open, two intermediate and two juniors, attired as Flower Power, was also the highest performing Cambridge team finishing 9th overall out of the 44 teams. Don Wilson and Neil Cox were their Open pair, finishing 19th in the Open section, the best result for Cambridge, while Beth Kingsley and Sue McKenzie paired up in the junior section. It was a fantastic day, enjoyed by everyone. A great day for Cambridge initiating such a prestigious event, which goes from strength to strength.

Cucina e Vino

Full of Flavour and Atmosphere

Alpino Cucina e Vino is Cambridge's relaxed, on-trend Italian 'local' offering a fantastico menu of delectable and lovingly-prepared food, warm hospitality and great ambience. The family-friendly restaurant, full of effortless charm, opened in 2013 under the ownership of husband and wife team, Noel Cimadom and Kim Smythe. The couple have worked hard to create a unique destination eatery. Initially they harboured a romantic restaurant idea, based on their experiences abroad, but their restaurant romanticism was short-lived, replaced instead by hard work and enterprise. Noel is Italian and Kim, a Cambridge-local, spent 20 years in Europe as a model. Noel has an extensive background in hospitality and worked in Munich prior to relocating to New Zealand so their young children could enjoy the Kiwi lifestyle. “Hospitality service is very professional in Germany,” says Noel, whose trained staff are a good mix and stable. Noel and Kim emphasise the importance of have a melting pot of happy staff and chefs that sprinkle a little bit of love into their food. “It creates a harmonious environment that filters all the way down to our customers,” says Kim. Staffing has been a challenge at times. The couple have found it very difficult to find Kiwi chefs, as they tend to go overseas and the chefs that come here are often transient. However, they are delighted to have well trained chef Ian Harrison on the team, as well as two dedicated managers.

Taking Café Culture to the Next Level Alpino Cucina e Vino, in the former iconic Cambridge Post Office, hit another gear when owners Noel Cimadom and Kim Smythe decided to halve the size of their restaurant. Although the building was full of character, the large environment was logistically impractical for a busy food hospitality business. “Halving the floor size was a turning point for the business,” says Kim. The physical downsize created a more work-friendly environment for staff and a warm intimacy for diners. Open seven days a week, Alpino Cucina e Vino has become a hub for families, business people and people from all walks of life, who are drawn to its atmosphere, service and food. “Our aim is to provide good honest, soul food,” says Kim. The restaurant takes its name from the Italian, alpino, meaning 'man from the alps', a reference to Noel and the mountainous region of Italy where he comes from. Prior to launching the business, Noel undertook his own market research and concluded that Cambridge was ripe and ready for a touch of European panache. The business is proving such a success that Noel and Kim have extended their reach to Tauranga where another restaurant is due to open early November. “And by coincidence, it's in another old post office building,” says Kim. The business will feature Clarence Bistro witch it’s modern European dining, IKI specialising in Asian street food and Clarence hotel with 10 boutique rooms upstairs. The project is named after Kim's father Michael Clarence Smythe who sadly passed away the night the couple launched Alpino Cucina e Vino. Meanwhile, they operate a pop up restaurant in Mount Maunganui called Clarence test kitchen. “We're trialling dishes and seeing how the team works together,” says Noel. The two boutique businesses will employ around 60 staff.

Close finish for superbike rider By Sophie Iremonger

Local superbike rider Dillon Telford has completed the latest round of the Italian Superbike Championship series with a 22nd-place finish out of 43 riders – not bad when you’re up against the world’s best superbike riders massive corporate sponsorship. The do-it-yourself Kiwi is being supported by his girlfriend/mechanic Jo Taylor and the Gabro Racing team, going a long way on minimal sponsorship to show the big boys just how fast the “Fast Kiwi” can get. For the latest round at Misano, Dillon and his grassroots team managed to upgrade their 2011 Aprilia Tuono V4 superbike from a 1000cc motor to 1100cc to match the power of their competitors, but when the new engine started randomly cutting out with no obvious cause, the week leading up to race day became rather stressful. “The issue caused a very fast 6th gear crash at Vallelunga,” said Jo, “both bike and rider were extremely lucky to walk away unhurt or damaged, thanks to the fantastic gear from RST-Moto. “Getting closer to the Misano World Circuit race, tensions were high. It’s a fast and unforgiving track, National Trophy 1000 is a fast 42 rider class and this is not the time or place to gamble with your life with a ‘she’ll be right attitude’, everyone was exhausted, stressed out and frustrated with no one or thing being the answer to our problem, only days out from the event.

“We took a gamble and un-plugged the map sensors on the bike, and voilah, she doesn’t stop!” Race day at the Misano World Circuit came with the motor sorted just in time, and tensions were high amidst a highly talented field of riders pumping out top lap times of 1.36 - 1.37 seconds. But in the qualifying round Dillon managed to produce a personal-best time of 1.40.7, putting himself into a 23rd-place start position. “We didn’t obtain our personal goal of 1.39 but with a little more set up and time we can,” said Jo. “Dillon got a lot of second looks from people on track as he passed them with handlebars at their head height!” With official racing underway, Dillon made his way into 20th place and then 17th, until a messed-up gear change saw him hit a corner in neutral, running wide and allowing a few riders back underneath him. He managed to pass a few of them before the checkered flag ended the race, leaving him in 22nd out of 43 riders. “Not our ideal race, but … an awesome solid weekends’ performance after a hectic week,” said Jo. “The team is very happy, the bike ran okay with the map sensors unplugged … We brought the bike home in one piece, setting new personal best lap times and knowing we have the pace to be at the front of this championship if we had the financial support to do it, gaining the Gabro Tuono bikes’ best ever lap times and unofficially the fasted naked

around Misano. “This track takes big balls to ride, especially at the pace of the front runners, but we’re inching closer each time we ride.” Later, a test day at Mugello (in 55-degree Celsius heat) enabled the team to retune the bike to run with the map sensors connected, without the cut-out issues, reaching a top speed of 294kph, a huge improvement over the 275kph top speed they’d achieved with the 1000cc motor. The next and final race takes place this Sunday, August 26, before the Kiwi pair returns home a few days later. “We hope to make our pre-race preparation days less stressful this time around!” said Jo.

family as a tribute to the young golfer, whose brother Jacob has taken up the challenge and teamed up with Cure Kids to raise money for medical research. Cambridge Golf Club member Sian Stevenson organised the local 18-hole Ambrose competition on Saturday, played with four-person teams, with the assistance of club manager Geoff Pitman, club captain Andrew Rye and others. They managed to get 79th world-ranked Ryan Fox to attend the event, fresh from his recent successes in the British Open and the 2018 PGA event in the US. Fox drove the ball on the 15th hole for each four-person team, finding the green several times with his 280-metre long drives. “Play went remarkably smoothly and a thoroughly good day’s golf ensued in brilliant sunshine,” said Sian. “The final scores were a tribute to the fact that once again the greens staff had worked miracles, despite the rain, and the

course was presented in immaculate condition for what can best be described as a wonderful golfing day.” Food, drinks and raffle and an auction were enjoyed afterwards in the clubhouse thanks to prize donations by NZ Golf, Ebbett Holden, Onyx, Golf Distributors, Classic Builders, Cambridge Business Consultants and Gary Lorigan. The Troake family then said a few moving words about their charity, Putting for Purpose, and

the history behind it all, before thanking the golf club, Sian, Ryan and all those involved with running the day and for the donation to their charity. A representative from Cure Kids also gave thanks. Ryan Fox was then tasked with presenting the prizes. After the prize giving Club President David Donnelly announced that the club was hoping to raise over $7000, and that a further sum had been offered by an anonymous donor to boost the

competition’s grand total of funds raised to $10,000 – a massive achievement. Then followed an hour of interesting conversation as Ryan Fox fielded questions from the floor, closing the session by acknowledging a long outstanding debt of a bottle of wine for Sian, for victory in a long drive challenge at the NZ PGA Pro Am in 2016, where Sian managed to keep her ball on the fairway. His conclusion was met with a loud applause from 120 very happy golfers.

Highs and lows at junior world champs By Sophie Iremonger

New Zealand’s team of cyclists competing at the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Switzerland returned home this week with two medals from their team pursuit finals, and several placings just off the podium. The Kiwis saw both highs and lows over the five-day competition which wrapped up on Monday, topped off with gold and silver wins respectively by our male and female pursuit teams. The first round of finals racing on day two saw the men’s quartet of Finn Fisher-Black (Cambridge), George Jackson (Waikato), Corbin Strong and Bailey O’Donnell claim gold over the French in the 4000m team pursuit, and the women’s quartet of Ally Wollaston (Cambridge), McKenzie Milne (Waikato), Annamarie Lippo and Sami Donnelly claiming silver over Australia – the fifth consecutive time the Kiwis

have won the women’s team pursuit at the junior world champs. “They produced two really good rides, particularly the effort against Australia,” said head coach Jon Andrews. “A key here has been the improvement in race-craft which is a direct result of the racing experience in the Subway Track Series that was established this year.” Day three saw crashes and sickness plague the New Zealand team, with Ally Wollaston forced to withdraw from the omnium competition due to illness. Not to be defeated, she raced bravely in the scratch race in the morning to place seventh, and raced again to place 17th in the tempo. But unfortunately the 17-year-old St Peter’s student worsened throughout the day, forcing her withdrawal. That same day Waikato rider George Jackson crashed in the heats of the points race and was unable to continue, missing out on a place in the final.

St Peter’s rugby champions St Peter’s School’s under 15 rugby team are the champions of the region following an emphatic win over Hamilton Boys’ High School. Competing in the final for the Waikato Secondary School U15 Andrew Strawbridge Cup, they played in trying conditions on Saturday, up against the only team they had previously lost against, on the opposition’s home turf.

The HBHS team secured the ball early, looking to run strongly at the inside channels of the St Peter’s players. They countered this with rugged defence, and despite HBHS making several line breaks, the St Peter’s cover defence was able to shut down these threats quickly. The first half finished with St Peter’s on a five-point lead, Carter Walshe having crossed the line after a sustained period of pressure from the team.

As the second half got underway the St Peter’s players were relentless, using their limited freedom of space wisely. Patience and style were rewarded with a try from Oliver Assen, pushing the margin out to 10-nil, and winning the game for St Peter’s.

Three judo medals for Camkada Cambridge FC R Three members of Camkada Judo Club took part in the Auckland International Judo competition last week, coaches Harry Smith and Ross Beale and judoka, Jack. First up was Jack, who despite losing once, pulled off two victories to make it through to the third and fourth-place fight – where he won the match to take home bronze. Next up was Ross, fighting in the senior under 99kg division, giving away a big weight advantage but still managing to make the final, where he walked away with gold. Harry was up next fighting in the over 60s under90kg division. Having had a busy year, unable to get into much serious training, he called on his years of experience and skill to take the gold medal. Camkada Judo Club is based out of their dojo rooms on Maclean St, just off Thornton Rd. Trainings are Monday and Wednesdays, and Fridays in Te Awamutu.

The Cambridge Football CLub’s D1 side lost 4-2 to second-placed Te Aroha Cobras on the weekend, meaning Cambridge can only take the title if other results go their way in the two remaining rounds of competition. The win gives Cobras a two-point lead in the competition and it’s possible that the D1’s hopes of taking the title could depend on Cambridge D2 beating Te Aroha in their final match of the season. Te Aroha took a first half lead against Cambridge with a looping longshot that sneaked beneath the D1 crossbar. The visitors went two up just after the interval, prompting a fightback from Cambridge who scored through Mitch Claridge and Scott Jenkins to tie up the game at 2-2. However, Te Aroha finished strongest and scored twice more to leave John Kerkhof Park with the win. Cambridge’s other remaining hopes of winning silverware depend on the club’s women’s team who play the final of the Waikato Women’s Cup against West Hamilton United on Sunday. The match starts at 11am at John Kerkhof Park. In early rounds, Cambridge overcame Matamata (50), Tokoroa (3-2) and Claudelands Rovers (3-1). West Hamilton reached the final after wins against Melville United (5-1), Huntly Thistle (7-2) and Waikato Unicol (9-2). Cambridge last won the cup in 2014 and were beaten finalists in 2013 and 2015. Last Sunday, Cambridge came from behind to beat Claudelands Rovers 3-1 – a repeat of the cup semi-final score - to clinch second place in this year’s Waikato A League. Trailing 1-0 at John Kerkhof Park, Cambridge recovered in the second half with goals from Fairlie Morton and Astrid Howarth (2). Coach Andrew Taylor named Georgia Bellamy-Hill and Caitlyn Varcoe as the Hill Homes Players of the Day.

Rowers bring home medals By Sophie Iremonger

Cambridge rowers gave dominant performances recently on the world stage, competing at the 2018 World Rowing Junior Championships August 9 – 13 in the Czech Republic. Having spent the past few months training out of Karapiro, the New Zealand team took home three medals across the Men’s Four, Women’s Four and the Women’s Double Sculls.

St Peter’s students Rebecca Leigh, from Karapiro, and Brooke Kilmister, a boarding student from Waihi, were competing at the event, Brooke in the bronze-winning Women’s Four and Rebecca in the Junior Women’s Quadruple Scull, which placed third in the B final. Racing the A final, the Women’s Four crew managed to move into second place as their final sprint began, hot on the heals of the US team, with Italy

close behind them. The Kiwis were just pipped by the Italians for second, taking home third instead. “It was a tough race from the start but we managed to hold on,” said Brooke. “It was then all or nothing in the last 500 meters. We’ve been together for 10 weeks and it feels very special. We’re like sisters now.” New Zealand also entered two crews into the 2018 World Rowing University Championships August 10 – 12 in

China, comprised of three rowers from Massey University which each took home medals from A finals. Racing in the Men’s Lightweight Single Sculls, Harrison Sommerville managed to win gold in a time of 7:02.87, almost three seconds clear of Germany in second. Meanwhile Amy Mills and Georgia Allen won bronze in the Women’s Double Sculls, just 0.2 seconds ahead of Italy, with China and Canada first and second.

Dominant performances in Bowers Cup Game six of the regional under45kg rugby tournament known as Bowers Cup saw the Cambridge team face up against the Tritons from South Waikato over the weekend. The local lads started slowly but gained possession and territory as the match developed. James Maguire found space on the left wing and with strong running and a good fend he opened the scoring, with Ryan Harvey converting to make the score 7-0. James was put into space again shortly after and claimed his second

try. No.8 Baxter Smith also had a strong half and finished off with an excellent try. The score sat 17-0 at half time. Cambridge continued to dominate in the second half with Baxter claiming two more tries, with Cayden Jackson converting one. Andrew Bassam ran strong and aggressive to score another try to eventually leave the final score at 340, a dominant victory for the team. Game seven saw Cambridge challenge Morrinsville, once again dominating the first half

with Cambridge scoring three unconverted tries by Andrew Bassam, Preston Bowler and Cayden Jackson. 15-0 at half time. In the second half Morrinsville changed tactics with a good kicking game keeping the Cambridge team pegged in their own half. They managed two tries, one converted, going into the last play of the game 15-12 to Cambridge. Morrinsville were awarded a penalty and managed to pick and drive to the line and take the game 17-15. The last round and finals are at

Morrinsville this weekend. The players and coaches Paul, Dave and Sue would like to thank the supporters and sponsors for their help and support.

There’s a brand new kumara in town – and it’s skin and flesh is purple. This very different variety bred by Plant & Food New Zealand is ‘Purple Dawn’ and I’m impressed with it. Purple Dawn (sometimes called blue kumara) has a dense flesh and isn’t as sweet as orange kumara but it has great flavour and the purple deepens once cooked. With such amazing colour it adds real excitement to shepherds’ pies and rosti, and it’s also terrific roasted. It certainly caused friends to comment when they

were served my ‘Blue Soup’. All kumara not only taste great but they are packed with more vitamins C and E (antioxidants) than potatoes, pasta and rice. They are a very good source of fibre and potassium, are virtually fat-free and low in sodium. But Purple Dawn — because of it’s rich colour— must also be high in anthocyanins which research has associated with helping to protect against myriad diseases including cancer. It’s so new that the nutritional analysis is still

RED DAWN KUMARA & FENNEL SALAD 500g Red Dawn or blue kumara 3 tablespoons olive oil freshly ground black pepper and flaky sea salt to taste 1 teaspoon fennel seed 1 large red capsicum, seeded and cubed 1 large orange, peeled and cubed 1 large avocado, stoned, peeled and cubed 1/4 cup chopped parsley 1/4-1/2 cup good vinaigrette or your favourite salad dressing Preheat the oven to 200°C. Peel and cut the kumara into 2cm cubes. Place in a roasting pan with the olive oil and seasonings. Toss to coat evenly. Bake for 8 minutes, add the capsicum and continue roasting for 5 minutes or until the kumara is tender. Cool. Place in a salad bowl and add the remaining ingredients. Serve at room temperature. Serves 4-6.

being undertaken. Kumara has been changing its image for centuries ever since arriving in New Zealand in the 10th century. The earliest kumara were small tubers — a bigger ‘sweet potato’ was introduced later. It is this creamy-fleshed variety with its purple skin that became the common kumara we enjoy today. And now we have a rainbow of orange, gold and purple fleshed kumara to enhance our everyday menus. CHEESY-STUFFED KUMARA The orange kumara are colourful and quite moist but any variety could be used. 2 large orange kumara 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 cup grated tasty cheddar cheese 1 medium chorizo, peeled and diced 2 spring onions, sliced 1-2 red chillies, diced sour cream to serve Brush the kumara with the oil. Microwave on high for about 5 minutes or until tender. Cool a little then slice in half lengthwise. Carefully remove the kumara flesh with a teaspoon leaving a shell. Combine the flesh with half the cheese and the chorizo. Spoon back into the shells. Top with the remaining cheese. Either, reheat in the microwave for 2-3 minutes or in a 180°C oven for 10-15 minutes or until hot. Serve sprinkled with the spring onions, chillies and topped with sour cream. Serves 4 as an accompaniment or 2 as a main.

BLUE KUMARA SOUP Super served with a little sour cream or yoghurt on top. 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 large shallots, diced 2 cloves garlic 700g Purple Dawn kumara, peeled and chopped 1/2 teaspoon grated root ginger pinch chilli powder salt and pepper to taste 4 cups good beef or vegetable stock finely grated rind and juice 1 large orange Heat the oil in a large saucepan on medium-low. Add the shallots and sauté until tender but not brown. Add the garlic, kumara, seasonings and stock. Simmer until tender, about 20 minutes. Add the orange rind. Purée with a hand-held blender or in a food processor, until smooth. Add the orange juice and reheat gently. Serve in deep bowls. Serves 4-6.

Behind any great man, there's always a greater woman and you're about to meet her. It is crucial you get to know this woman; many of us already do and don't even realise it. Joan Castleman (Glenn Close), a highly intelligent and stillstriking beauty, the perfect devoted wife. Forty years spent sacrificing her own dreams and ambitions for her husband Joe (Jonathan Pryce) and his literary career, ignoring his infidelities and excuses because of his. Their fateful pact has built a marriage upon uneven compromises. Joan's reached her breaking point. On the eve of Joe's Nobel Prize for Literature, Joan's coup de grace is to confront the biggest sacrifice of her life and secret of his career.

Remember ‘The First Wives Club? The special appeal is watching four stars who have given us immeasurable pleasure in the past and are at it again. Diane (Diane Keaton) is recently widowed after 40 years of marriage, Vivian (Jane Fonda) enjoys her men with no strings attached, Sharon (Candice Bergen) is still working through her decades-old divorce, and Carol’s (Mary Steenburgen) marriage is in a slump after 35 years. The lives of these four lifelong friends are turned upside down after reading the infamous “50 Shades of Grey,” catapulting them into a series of outrageous life choices. Genuinely funny. Also stars Andy Garcia and Don Johnson.

Reds ensure safety with big win

Cambridge D1’s Mitchell Claridge rises to win a header against Te Aroha in a crowded penalty area. By Josh Easby Cambridge have secured Northern League football for next year with an emphatic 5-0 win against relegation-threatened Te Atatu. The Reds needed three points from the match in Auckland to make sure the club could not finish in the bottom two places of the Lotto NRFL second division, risking relegation from the competition. And Cambridge could not have been more assertive in taking control of the match, ensuring the season’s final game on September 1 (away to divisional champions Takapuna) is of academic interest only. Striker Callum MacLeod led the way with a hattrick, the first of which he scored to give Cambridge the lead after 24 minutes. As the half went into added time, MacLeod sunk the hearts of home supporters

with the Reds’ second goal, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead at half-time. The Reds came out for the second half determined to keep destiny in their own hands and MacLeod quickly completed his hat-trick with a goal in the 48th minute. Midfielder Marcelo Sosa then struck a screamer on the hour to extend the Reds’ lead to 4-0. Jamie Woodlock continued his recent goalscoring form when he added Cambridge’s fifth goal from the penalty spot with ten minutes to go. The competition table is so tight the result lifted Cambridge into sixth place with Northland, Onehunga Mangere United, Te Atatu and Papakura City still jostling to avoid relegation. The jubilation of Cambridge’s win was offset by the disappointment of the Reds reserves’ first loss in 13 DO YOU NEED SHELTER FROM THE SUN AND RAIN?

matches. The reserves lost their game at Te Atatu 3-2, despite leading twice through leading scorer Andrew Taylor. Taylor opened the scoring early with his 22nd goal of the year and the teams turned around at 1-0. Te Atatu levelled early in the second half but Taylor regained the Reds’ lead from the penalty spot. However, the home side quickly equalised and then won the match with a late goal. The result means the competition title will be decided in the final match when the division’s two leaders, Cambridge and Takapuna, meet at Taharoto Park, Auckland, on Saturday September 1. Takapuna will take the title with a win or a draw, as the teams are tied on 50 competition points, but the Aucklanders have a slightly better goal differential. A win will bring the title back to Cambridge.
