Crime map reveals hotspots

Cambridge newsroom update

Quick as you like, Easter has come rocketing around again. This week we were on a short deadline thanks to the long weekend, so there’s been even more scrambling around than usual. Last week, I was lucky enough to meet a solo mum being helped with her kids’ sports costs thanks to the Waterboy, a sports charity founded by local man Thomas Nabbs. It was so nice to see the excitement on the faces of the four kids as they got to meet a couple of players from the Magic netball team, and the obvious relief on the face of their mum in knowing that their sports fees have been taken care of. I also got to go on the first councilrun bus tour around some of Cambridge’s historical landmarks recently, which I found fascinating. I particularly enjoyed hearing about the large niu at the end of Athlone Place. I’d seen it from the expressway but had never known what the massive cast iron and corten steel structure with the outstretched arms actually was, so now I do. Others on the trip seemed to find it enjoyable as well, although the ladies sitting behind me seemed to get more excited about any dogs or cats we passed by rather than anything else, which was adorable. Finally, I’d just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the support you have been giving the paper so far this year – it is very much appreciated – and to wish you a happy and restful Easter. Whatever you have planned, I hope you have a safe and enjoyable time with friends and whānau, or just doing whatever recharges your batteries. Because we all need to do that from time to time. Claire Castle, editor

Street View:

Police have released a map showing concentrated areas of criminal activity in Cambridge. The number of burglaries and car conversions are a little higher than the norm in these areas, police said. The offences seem to take place between 5pm and midnight, concentrating on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and police have asked the community to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately. Cambridge Community Board chair, Mike Pettit, said that extra police are planned for Cambridge on or before June. “It does not mean 24/7 policing however it will be far better than what it is now,” he said, adding that the police sergeant will be putting a roster together and it will be up to them to determine the best use of the staffing resource. The Cambridge police station has not had 24/7 staffing since 2016, with afterhours calls to 111 summoning police from Te Awamutu or Hamilton instead of local officers. Despite a petition later that year calling for the reinstatement of full coverage and requests from council and local

businesses, police have remained unmoved. In his annual presentation to council last month, Mike Pettit said over the past three years data has shown Cambridge is less safe, with two new gangs – the Greasy Dogs and the Rebels – moving into town since full-time staffing at the police station was scrapped.

With Easter weekend looming we hit the street this week to ask people how they planned to spend their Easter weekend.

Charity keeps sporting dreams alive By Claire Castle

Having five kids would be hard enough at the best of times, but for Leamington mum Hannah Meredith it’s made all the more difficult by raising them by herself. It’s been tough since she separated from the kids’ dad and moved to Cambridge 18 months ago, but thanks to sporting charity the Waterboy things have just become a little bit easier. Doing her best to maintain a positive attitude, Hannah concedes that she has found things “very difficult” being on her own and raising her kids on a benefit. “You just have to make the best of what you’ve got,” she said, adding that the kids’ father is “not in the picture” by his own choice. Hannah is doing her best to make a better future for her and the kids – she’s studying Early Childhood Education – but admits there’s not a lot left over each week. “I get the

bills paid and the kids’ pukus are full but there’s not enough for the extras.” All four girls are sporty (her youngest child, Lincon, is only 2) and Hannah herself said she enjoyed the opportunity that sport gave her growing up, something her own kids were in danger of missing out on due to financial restraints. The Waterboy got involved, however, and with the help of sponsorship from the Five Stags in Leamington, Branderson Homes and swimshop. co.nz, the girls have now had their netball and swimming costs covered. General manager of the Stags, Matt Palmer, said the decision to jump onboard and help the family was something of a “no brainer”. Matt said he was “full of emotions“ meeting the family, describing them as “beautiful kids and a really caring, loving mum”. “It’s hard to think there are people in our community who are having

such a struggle…what is a simple pleasure for some (playing sport) is impossible for others,” he said. “Team sports helps kids learn to mix with other people, and sharing, and it gives kids confidence in what they do. Being able to support them to do that is a real honour.” Matt also thanked patrons and staff of the Five Stags, saying that “we hope you will feel 100 per cent a part of this as well, because it’s your support that has allowed us to do this.” The girls themselves were buzzing about the support and grateful to be able to continue doing what they have been doing. By the looks of their prowess on the netball court as they were shooting some goals with WaikatoBay of Plenty Magic players Monica Falkner and Hayley Saunders last week, they could well be some future stars in the making, while Matt should not be expecting a callup anytime soon.

Quickfire News Battery hen adoption day

Free as a Bird Rescue are holding an ex-battery hen adoption day in Cambridge next week. Described as “great family members, super-friendly and in time will become great egg-layers”, the hens are bought from battery farms when then reach 18 months of age. Kelly from Free as a Bird said they have plenty of laying years left in them, but due to moulting there is a misconception they are past it, and battery farms send them off to slaughter to be replaced by younger hens. Free as a Bird treats them for parasites, gives them a nail trim, a beak reshape and a mineral boost, and shows them how to be hens again. Anyone thinking about giving some ex-battery hens a new lease on life should contact Kelly on 0212124788 to discuss. Adoption fee is $15 each.

Western Union scam refunds

Netsafe advises that People who have lost money to a scammer who had them pay via Western Union between January 1, 2004, and January 19, 2017, may be eligible for a refund. To claim the remission scam victims will need to provide evidence of the transaction including the Western Union Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) and the date of the transaction. The remission scheme is available to people worldwide. All claims to the remission scheme must be submitted by the 31 May 2018. Netsafe warns that scammers may take advantage of this – for example advising they can lodge a claim for an upfront fee – and advises those lodging a claim to do so through the link on www. netsafe.org.nz.

Snow leopard sanctuary not hoax

In a shocking turn of events, a news story that came out about a proposal to make a sanctuary for snow leopards in the Southern Alps is actually a serious idea put forward by someone. Unsurprisingly the idea has been widely condemned, however around 1400 people have signed a petition to support the sanctuary, citing reasons such as tourism and the fact that the snow leopards “need a safe place”. Federated Farmers has come out in opposition to the suggestion, and, in what is undoubtedly the understatement of the year, scientists have described the move as “risky”. In the newsroom we thought the press release from Federated Farmers was an early April Fool’s joke, however further enquiries proved this was not the case. In the highly unlikely event that the idea gets off the ground, no doubt bears or tigers could be introduced to combat the ensuing snow leopard population explosion.

Anna’s songs lead to Los Angeles spin-off By Viv Posselt

Six weeks spent at the ISINA music mentoring programme in Los Angeles has propelled Cambridge singer/ songwriter Anna Saxton on a new and exciting career trajectory. Anna, who works under the name “Saxi”, spent over six weeks in LA as part of an international group mentored by experts in six categories – vocal, instrumental, composition, sound engineering, guitar and DJ. Her mentor was award-winning Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, and the upshot of the trip was a recording and distribution deal of her own song, “Dirty Hands”,

through ISINA sometime in the next few months. The song has already been recorded. “The trip was a huge success for me … it’s so exciting,” she said. “When I sang “Dirty Hands” to the judges, they said they loved it and wanted to release it. I’m not certain of dates yet, but I expect to hear that within the next month or so.” In the meantime, Anna is putting in more hours than usual in the gym, aimed at the production in May of a new music video set to coincide with the independent release through a New Zealand distributor of another new song, “Craze”.

“I’m working out every single day in the lead-up to that, mostly because we’re going to be doing something really artistic for the music video, and I must be in shape for that!” Amid the busyness of being home, Anna took time to reflect on the “intense activity” that made up her time in California. She landed in LA on October 1, directly into a barrage of media activity which followed the participants throughout because the six-week mentoring programme is to be released as an eight-episode reality television series. The 15 international participants were put up in a Beverly Hills mansion, with Anna the only Kiwi among them. Time was spent in a frenzy of instruction and performance, interviews, song-writing, rehearsal and studio time – all leading up to a grand finale on November 15 at The Belasco in LA before a panel that included host Randy Jackson, as well as Kenny G and Babyface.

Participants’ best songs were performed at that finale before an audience of 3000, where Anna found herself on stage with Ariana Grande’s back-up dancers trained by Chris Brown’s choreographer. She said Randy Jackson provided great feedback and described her as one of the “stand-out performers”. Hard-pressed to pick out a highlight of the LA trip, Anna settled on the show at The Belsaco. “It was incredibly inspiring performing for a massive crowd, and to have back-up dancers and such an amazing band … I couldn’t have asked for a better performance.” She’s also grateful for the relationships built over there – many of which are ongoing on an almost daily basis. For the time being, however, Anna is busy working out at Cambridge’s FIT gym, and trying to organise some live shows pending the release of her new songs. She is also working towards the release of an EP down the track.

THURSDAY MARCH 29, 2018

Bus trip through history Always keen for a free trip, Claire Castle hopped on the bus for a look around Cambridge and surrounds on the first council Discovery Tour over this side of Waipa. I was excited to learn more about the history of our part of the world, and I wasn’t disappointed. The tour leader was Tony Roxbourough, Waipa District Council’s Manager – Waipa Heritage and Museum, who invited input from others on the bus. “I need to get knowledge of Cambridge, as I’ve been more Te Awamutu-focussed,” he admitted, adding that “the stories around the facts are as important as the facts” as he encouraged those on board to share their stories. Starting off from the Cambridge Town Hall, our first stop was Te Puna o te Roimata - the Urupa at the end of Athlone Place off Thornton Rd. On hand to assist was local iwi member Harry Wilson, who was able to help with Māori history in particular. Harry formally welcomed us onto the site, going on to explain how the Waikato Expressway had actually been helpful for the archaeological understanding of the area, as carving through the land had opened it up for exploration. He also explained the giant nui (ceremonial pole) – Te Rongopai – visible from the Expressway, with arms outstretched. Harry explained that the mast, built by artist Brett Graham, represented a direct connection to God, with arms to welcome everyone. After an interesting talk from Harry with input from Tony, it was back on the bus and off to

Pukerimu then on to Monavale and Roto-o-Rangi, where we heard all about the early colonial troops in the area and what happened there. From there, we cruised out to Lake Karapiro where we heard about the Māori history of the area, including an inter-tribal battle that resulted in mass casualties. Harry said the bodies were burned where the lake is now, and the ensuing foul-smelling smoke went all the way over to Hautapu, which Harry said is how that area got its name. And Karapiro was named because of the putrid smell (piro) from the bodies on the rock (kara) where the lake now sits. Then it was back on the bus and up to the top of Pukemako – commonly known as Maungakawa or Sanitorium Hill in reference the open-air TB sanitorium built on the site – disembarking in the Gudex reserve at the top. Then back through Fencourt, finishing the tour back at the Town Hall. The whole thing was thoroughly interesting, and I can report that I learned a lot. They will need to shorten it down however, as the whole thing took almost four hours – an hour longer than scheduled. Oh, and we got cotton shopping-style ‘goody bags’ with the draft 10-year plan, a bottle of water and some popcorn. Bonus. The trips booked up fast, and by the time this goes to print they were all be booked up over this side of the district, but do keep an eye out for future trips to discover more about our town and its surrounds.

This niu (ceremonial pole), Te Rongopai (the message of peace) was erected in acknowledgement of the many pā located along the gully where the expressway runs. The outstretched arms reach out to share karakia to the people of the four winds.

OPINION

Fools for the Sake of Christ – The Venerable Malcolm French, scp

Many cultures have traditional greetings for Easter Day. “Happy Easter” is the standard in English, but often the traditional greeting reflects the Resurrection of Jesus which the feast celebrates. My wife’s Ukrainian-Canadian family will say, Khrystos voskres! (Christ is Risen!). This year, the greeting Easter morning in many homes is more likely to be April Fool! than Christ is Risen! The coincidence of Easter Day and April Fool is a rare event. It hasn’t happened before in my lifetime – the last time was 1956. It will happen twice more in my lifetime (2029 and 2040) – assuming I live to be 80, and not again until 2108. Some Christians will cringe. I see it as an opportunity and a challenge. In his first letter to the Church in Corinth, St. Paul uses the words fool, foolish and foolishness ten times in the first four chapters. He speaks of the death and resurrection of Christ as foolishness to the Gentiles (1: 23). He assures them that God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise (1: 27). He tells them to become fools so that you become wise (3:18). Finally, he tells them, We are fools for the sake of Christ (4: 10).

It is foolish that God would become Human. It is foolish that God would patiently accept death on a cross. It is foolish that God should rise again and destroy the power of death. But this is the Christian faith. This is, as one hymn puts it, the feast of victory for our God.

Jesus calls Christians to foolishness. Many have taken up the call to be holy fools. One famous St. Francis of Assisi, who set aside wealth and comfort to live in poverty and preach to the poor. So, Happy Easter! Christos Anesti! Khrystos Voscres! Le Christ est ressuscité! Ngā Mihi O Te Aranga! And April Fool!

Malcolm French.

Balloons a soggy hit

The rain didn’t put off the community, with around 5,000 people braving the weather on Friday for the inaugural Balloons visit Waipa event. Despite the rain, one balloon, Happy 2, was able to light up the night. The Rotary Walk Thru Balloon was also popular, with families able to see a hot air balloon from the inside. The crowds were entertained with free amusement rides, free face painting and food trucks. Council hosted a stand for its 10-Year Plan, with a colouring in wall, virtual reality goggles and other activities. Natalie Palmer, council’s manager - Communication and Engagement said, “it was a great family night out and fantastic to see so many people having a great time.”

For a gold coin donation, people could walk inside a hot air balloon.

THURSDAY MARCH 29, 2018

Health WOF gets thumbs up The March 16 Men’s Health Event at Cambridge Baptist Church has been given a firm “thumbs up” from all those concerned. A total of 125 men used the health event’s “warrant of fitness” card, 25 more than had used it during the previous event at the same venue in 2016. Organisers Delia Edmeades and Helen Vaughan said they, together with “an enthusiastic team of helpers”, were also very pleased with this year’s event. They said a group of men were waiting to enter when the doors opened at 10am, and the rush didn’t die down until about 12.20pm.

Doctors, nurses, and other health providers offered a range of services that included recording blood pressure, providing mental health assessments, offering glucose and cholesterol blood screening, and provided mole screening. One of the doctors who offered their services, Dr Peter Tribe, said: “Men continue to have poorer health outcomes than women. In New Zealand, life expectancy at birth was 83.2 years for females, and 79.5 for males, based on death rates between 2012 and 2014. This men’s health event has contributed to improving outcomes and decreasing this gap.” There were 18 groups present, in

addition to the general practitioners, and just over half of those who provided screening picked up something that needed referral for further investigation. An evaluation survey sent to the health event’s collaborators also returned a positive result, with 75 percent of them describing the event as “excellent” and the remainder saying it was “very good”. Health providers reported attendance by a cross-section of the local male population – young and old – and many

whose wives came along in support. Those taking part also voiced their appreciation of the Baptist Church’s outreach efforts and said they had been pleased to have been a part of the event. One of those present was Charles Gower, Waikato advocate for the Nationwide Health and Disability Advocacy Services. He said it was “very positive” to see so many men coming into the event to get information and check their health status and said the range of both professional and support groups on hand was impressive.

DNA discoveries at Cambridge Genealogy Submitted by Cambridge Genealogy, branch of NZSG. The subject of DNA in family research is widely known and has genealogists everywhere debating its usefulness or dismissing it entirely. Cambridge genealogists are aware of these diverse viewpoints, so a speaker to address the subject was invited to the Branch meeting in March. Sandra Metcalfe from Te Awamutu explained simply how DNA works, what results can be expected from testing, and some insights into how these results may be

It became obvious that there is much to learn on the whole DNA front. Cambridge Genealogists appreciated the opportunity to learn something new. Quickfire Sport Record fundraiser for Lifeskills By Sophie Iremonger

Cambridge High top at school track cycling

Over 160 track cyclists from more than 40 schools took part in the inaugural National School Track Championships in Cambridge last week, where Cambridge High School became the first school to win the Top School Trophy ahead of St Peters School in second and Palmerston North Boys third. The two-day competition took place over Tuesday and Wednesday last week at the Avantidrome, where riders competed in a derby race or keirin, points race, scratch race, team pursuit and team sprint, awarded for their placings in each which led to overall winners in each age group. St Peter’s student Ally Wollaston was awarded top honours in the under-20 girls division, and fellow student Jack Carswell won the under-16 boys. Cambridge High School students Reuben Webster and Mya Anderson won the boys and girls under-17 grades respectively, and Jaxton Russell won all but the team sprint for under-15 boys. The under-13 category winners were Jack Whittall and Mackenzie Barnett, both of Cambridge Middle School.

A record amount of funds was raised at the Cambridge Lifeskills golf tournament on March 21, as 128 golfers across 32 teams competed in the Twilight Ambrose Golf Tournament at the Cambridge Golf Club, traversing nine holes sponsored by local businesses. They gathered in the clubrooms afterwards for a fundraising auction, where winners’ prizes, raffles and auction items were all generously donated by local businesses. It meant a whopping $14,000 was raised for Cambridge Lifeskills, a not-for-profit agency which offers free counselling, support and encouragement for children and young people in Cambridge. “The generosity of the community has just been

amazing,” said Sandy Wesford, manager of Lifeskills. “This is going to mean hundreds of counselling hours, probably just over 300 counselling sessions, and that’s going to make such a big difference for so many children. The donation comes with perfect timing, with Cambridge Lifeskills currently having the largest ever number of children on their books, 60, cared for by nine counsellors. The Cambridge Lifeskills golf tournament has run for five years, originally the brain child of local good-sort and designer Karen May. Yvonne Scown, lovingly referred to as the “fundraiser extraordinaire”, has become an instrumental part of organising the event over the last couple of years, rallying dozens of businesses to get behind it. Cambridge Golf Club were also actively involved “on the ground” – or course – organising and running the tournament itself.

Bond claims Oceania title

Olympic rower-turned-cyclist Hamish Bond claimed the elite time trial honours on the opening day of the Oceania Road Cycling Championships in Tasmania on Friday. The Cambridge local clocked 51:03.44 over 41km to claim victory over two-time defending champion Sean Lake (Australia) by 32 seconds. The emphatic win comes less than three weeks out from Bond’s debut cycling at the Commonwealth Games, beginning April 4 on the Gold Coast.

Local riders on world champs team

Cycling New Zealand named a 14-strong team to contest the UCI Junior World Track Cycling Championships on Friday, which will compete the champs being held August 15-20 at the UCI headquarters in Aigle, Switzerland. St Peter’s student Ally Wollaston will lead the female endurance squad, joined by fellow Waikato rider McKenzie Milne. Another Cambridge local, Jarred Treymane, was named on the male endurance squad alongside Waikato’s George Jackson.

Students secure shield for 2nd year By Sophie Iremonger

Cambridge Middle School retained the Maeroa Jubilee Shield earlier this month when their team of 25 swimmers competed at the Waikato Intermediate and Middle Schools Swimming Championships in Morrinsville on March 12. The school won the event for the second year in a row, with podiumplacings achieved over 16 races, accumulating the most aggregate points

to secure the shield over 10 competing schools. “Now the pressure is on for the Year 7s to get it for a third time next year,” said Edison Ormsby, one of the swimmers. Other students described the experience as “awesome” and “a great experience”. Savanna Bourke smashed the 2013 record in the Year 8 Girls’ 50m freestyle heat, going on to beat her own record yet again in the final. She also made the 100m freestyle final and finished first once again.

Chiara Woodford made the final in the Year 7 girls’ 50m breaststroke and finished in first place, and Izie Murray finished first in the Year 8 girls’ 50m fly. Other top-placed students included Luke Hills (2nd in the Year 7 boys’ 50m backstroke), Edison Ormsby (3rd in the Year 7 boys’ 5a0m backstroke), Peyton Barnard (3rd in the Year 7 girls’ 50m backstroke 3rd), Archie Louden (2nd in the Year 8 boys’ 50m backstroke), Tom Wynne (2nd in the Year 7 boys’ 50m breaststroke), Noah Ludlam (2nd in the Year 8 boys’ 50m breaststroke), Zac Griffin (3rd in the Year 8 boys’ 50m breaststroke), Freya Kardas (2nd in the Year 8 girls 50m breaststroke), Ayla

Gilchrist (3rd in the Year 8 girls’ 50m breaststroke), Tom Wynne (2nd in the Year 7 boys’ 50m fly) and Ryan Nelson (3rd in the Year 8 boys’ 50m fly). The girls also made the final of the 6 x 50m girls’ championship relay and finished in second place. This was the first year that Richard Glover did not attend the event with Cambridge Middle School, having retired last year after over 40 years at the school. Richard was instrumental in setting up many of the inter-intermediate schools sporting events. The students said it was rather strange not having Mr Glover there, but they still had lots of fun.

Walker wins 3rd Oceania title

Olympic medallist Sarah Walker held off compatriot Rebecca Petch to win the Oceania BMX title in Western Australia on Wednesday, March 21. Walker won all of her motos and jumped first out of the gate to edge out Petch in the final at Bunbury, two hours south of Perth. Temperatures in to the 30s degrees Celsius did not deter riders or crowds with over 1000 people attending an action-packed day of racing at the Bunbury BMX Club. Walker continued her return to BMX claiming her second Oceania title in three years in commanding fashion ahead of Petch from the Te Awamutu

club with Sara Jones (Australia) completing the podium. Walker, who has won the title three times in all, looked untroubled all day, breezing through the moto rounds to start the final as the fastest seed. “I felt really calm out of the gate and all I was thinking about was just one jump at a time and giving 100 per cent,” Walker said. “ Earlier Cambridge rider Rico De Anvers crashed in practice but was able to race, making it to the semifinals, while Cambridge rider Toni James finished second in the final of the women’s 17-24 years age category in a closely-fought final.

XRACE champs make family legacy By Poppy Wortman

It was a family legacy at the Cambridge leg of NZHL XRACE on Friday night, held under drizzly skies at Lake Te Koo Utu. The race was taken out by fatherdaughter-duo Graeme and Sophie Ward, at a speedy time of 30 minutes and 32 seconds. With older sister Madeleine taking out her age group at the Hamilton event and brother Max winning his category in Cambridge last year, the Wards kept up with their champion streak. Mother Renee Ward said XRACE is a really family bonding experience. “It’s great, it’s not all about speed, but about puzzles too,” she said. “It gets the kids thinking as well as moving. “We’ll definitely be back again next year.”

More than 600 entrants took part in the event, significantly up from 2017. The Cambridge leg was the 11th stopover in the national series of XRACE events, an adventure race made up of parent and child teams, racing against other family teams to complete ten challenges. Seven-year-old Sophie said her favourite was the handshake challenge – where teams had to design their own handshake prior to the day, and perform it twice before moving off to the finish line. “Dad and I put in some solid hula hoop practice in the lead-up as well,” she said. “Thank you so much to the XRACE people for bringing it to Cambridge.” XRACE director Tamara Hermans said the light rain didn’t act a deterrent to the event, instead adding an extra

factor of fun. “As we say, ‘We’re not made of sugar’,” she said. “Cambridge is one of our favourite

destinations too. To watch all the families working together to complete the course, let alone being one of the ones behind it is just remarkable.”

A bit of wet weather did not deter the more than 600 competitors in this year’s XRACE in Cambridge on Friday. /WaikatoShow

St Peter’s best at Maadi By Sophie Iremonger St Peter’s School’s senior girls’ 8 rowers topped the tables at the 2018 Maadi Cup event in Twizel with the bestpossible result – the Levin Jubilee Cup. It’s the female-equivalent to the Maadi Cup, both regarded as the top two trophies at the National Schools Rowing Champs. Though the Maadi Cup was first won during

World War II by Kiwi troops rowing on the Nile, the Levin Jubilee Cup, originally bestowed in 1981 during the town’s 75th jubilee, holds equal prestige as a top title to contend for at the annual event, hosted alternatively between Lake Karapiro and Lake Ruataniwha each year. It’s fair to say St Peter’s was the best-performing school overall at the

event, racking up 52 points to claim the Star Trophy, which marks the overall champion school. Hamilton Boys finished second with 39 points, followed by Christchurch Boys on 31 points. And if that wasn’t enough, the school’s girls’ under 18 coxed four won the Dawn Cup for the third year, with Brie Perry, Brooke Kilmister, Morgan Blind, Katie Bell

and coxswain Charlotte Siermans. The four were joined by Anna Cairns, Beckie Leigh, Amy Butler, Kaylin Wren, with coxswain Lauren Gibb, to win the Levin Jubilee Cup. Kilmister and Perry also won the girls u18 coxless pair final. Overall St Peter’s School brought home eight gold, six silver and two bronze medals from Twizel. Meanwhile, Cambridge High School’s 32 athletes competing at the event

made placings in twelve A finals, nine B finals and two C finals, with boys’ under 17 single sculler Seth Hope rowing through to a bronze position in his final, and Sean Hale and Matt McHugh, rowing in the under 17 double, finishing with a silver medal having missed gold just before the finish line. Full results from the 2018 Maadi Cup are available at http://rowit. nz.

Local sailor makes close second By Sophie Iremonger

A Cambridge sailor took to the sea outside Muscat, Oman last week competing in the Flying Phantom Series, sailing an 18ft flying catamaran over four days of competition. Micah Wilkinson, a former Cambridge High School student, finished in second place alongside NZ team mate Olivia Mackay of Napier, competing in a smaller series held in conjunction with the Extreme Sailing Series. The pair, who together won the Red Bull Foiling Generation World Final in 2016, were up against former rivals, the French youth team, which Micah faced

along with the NZ team at the Youth America’s Cup last year, where NZ finished in a close second place. “Our main rivals were the French youth team,” explained Micah, who is now based in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. “Over the four days we were tight with race wins going both ways. On the final day we were separated (from the French) by two points. It was not to be for us as they mastered the light winds and took victory.” Not to be disheartened, Micah added, “our highlight was dominating racing in strong breeze and getting to explore a part of the world we had never been to.” Now in Spain, Micah said it had

been a bit of a shock going from 30 to 10 degrees, “but preparation is going well,” as he gets ready to enter the European sailing season, now back in his familiar Nacra 17 foiling catamaran. His first regatta starts April 2. “It will be interesting to see how we go as it’s the first time we will be racing the Europeans after a bit summer of training in New Zealand,” he said. Though he was training on the North Shore of Auckland over the holiday period, Micah said, “I will not be dragged into supporting the Blues though and am a stout Chiefs fan.” Before heading to the Northern

Hemisphere, the 22-year-old spent a week in Cambridge assisting his dad Peter in building a box trail to cart his gear around Europe. “A big thanks to Dad and the boys at Wilkinson Transport Engineers for their help building it at late notice,” he said. “It’s an awesome piece of kit Yachting New Zealand have provided us, and we will practically be living out of it in Europe.” Micah plans to be back in New Zealand at the end of September, following a raft of international competition – keep an eye out in the paper to see how he gets on.

MovieReview BLOCKERS

Three parents, one mother and two fathers, have bonded over their daughters' friendship, which began in playschool. Now they face a parent's worst nightmare, Prom Night. By spying on their teens they discover, to their horror, that the girls have made a 'sex pact' to lose their virginity on that night. The parents decide to block it by staging an 'intervention', which naturally does not go to plan amid the general mayhem of teens just wanting to have fun. “It’s a good age-restricted comedy. I really enjoyed it”. Matt. “Really funny and quite a touching message about family and parenting. I loved it.” Emily.

EARLY MAN

PETER RABBIT A plucky cave man named Dug, his sidekick Hognob and the rest of their tribe face a grave threat to their simple existence. Lord Nooth plans to take over their land and transform it into a giant mine, forcing Dug and his clan to dig for precious metals. Not ready to go down without a fight, Dug and Hognob must unite their people in an epic quest to defeat a mighty enemy, the Bronze Age. Wonderfully entertaining family film that will appeal to all ages.

Peter Rabbit and his three sisters, Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-Tail, enjoy spending their days in Mr. McGregor’s vegetable garden. When one of McGregor’s relatives suddenly moves in, he’s less than thrilled to discover a family of rabbits in his new home. A battle of wills soon breaks out as the new owner hatches scheme after scheme to get rid of Peter, a resourceful rabbit who proves to be a worthy and wily opponent. Great movie for everyone in the family if you like slapstick humour and all of that. Witty, clever and just plain old fun.

THE BLACK PANTHER

After the death of his father, T’Challa returns home to the African nation of Wakanda to take his rightful place as king. When a powerful enemy suddenly reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king -and as Black Panther -- gets tested when he’s drawn into a conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people. becoming the highest grossing superhero movie of all-time.
