His hooves are incredibly hardy. His rock-star mane has to be wrestled into plaits. While other horses eat grass, he happily munches on thistles. Born in the mountainous tussock lands of the central North Island’s Kaimanawa Ranges, 7-year-old Redcliffs Bill is a bona fide “wild child”. But his Cambridge owner Georgia Bouzaid wouldn’t have it any other way, saying the quirks of her Kaimanawa pony’s unique breed are what make him so special. “He does what he wants, but it’s kind of best to just let him, and when he goes into the ring he knows his job,” the 15-yearold St Peter’s School student said. “Even if it doesn’t turn out how you planned it, next time he just goes in and tries harder. It’s like he doesn’t give up on you, he’ll just keep trying. He has a massive heart.” Since meeting in 2016, Georgia and Bill have formed an incredible bond, exploding onto the New Zealand show jumping scene in January 2017 by winning their first pony grand prix on debut. Over the past year they have galloped up the equestrian ranks, their astonishing run of form singling them out as “real contenders” for the Pony of the Year title at this year’s glitzy Horse of the Year (HOY) show in Hastings from March 13-18. However, disaster struck in February when Georgia was hospitalised with a serious viral illness that ruled her out of the event. Olivia Apatu went on to win the coveted title on Alasaan Arzu, bred out of a Kaimanawa mare. After working so hard to get to HOY – the most prestigious equestrian event in the Southern Hemisphere – Georgia was devastated. “It’s pretty gut wrenching...but we’re lucky that she has two more seasons on her beautiful pony,” her mother Kelly said.

“Next season she’ll be out there all guns firing.” Georgia and Bill’s success over the past two seasons saw Kelly, Georgia and her sister Senna (12) uproot their life on Waikeke Island late last year and move to Cambridge to be more central to equine events and opportunities. “For me I’ve seen a combination of Bill and Georgia performing at top level and the determination, commitment and career aspirations show a real opportunity to succeed,” Kelly said. “And you always have to believe and support your kids’ dreams. So here we are, happily.” The move enabled the family to buy a 2.1-hectare property complete with basic equine facilities, which they plan to develop, and Georgia now has her sights set on a professional show jumping career and competing at the Olympics. Thanks to Georgia’s stellar sporting pedigree, she “certainly knows the ethos to competing in an international arena”, Kelly said. Georgia’s grandfather, Chris Bouzaid, put New Zealand on the international yachting map when he won the One Tonne Cup in 1969, and her father Richard won the America’s Cup in 2003 with Alinghi. But for now, Georgia’s main goal is to focus on recovering from her illness, so she can get back on her beloved pony Bill. With the 2018 Kaimanawa muster rapidly approaching, she is encouraging others to consider adopting a wild horse. “There are Kaimanas throughout all the disciplines,” she said. “They’re just such good all-round ponies and they don’t give up. When they’re tired they keep going because it’s survival and that’s what they’ve been bred to do. “It might be a longer process getting them to competition level, but it’s so rewarding knowing you’ve saved another life.” Pictured right: Georgia Bouzaid has formed an incredible bond with 7-year-old Redcliffs Bill, her “wild child”.

According to Kaimanawa Heritage Horses (KHH), a charitable society run by a “volunteer group of passionate horse people”, horses were first recorded in the Kaimanawas in the 1870s, but by 1979 only 179 remained, prompting the establishment of a protected area for them in 1981. However, by the 1990s the population had exploded, creating feed shortages and threatening ecologically sensitive areas. In a move to improve the animals’ health and protect the environment, the Department of Conservation (DOC) began mustering the wild horses. In 1997, 1100 were removed from a population of 1700 and although many found homes through public auctions, a large number were sent to the abattoir. Today, thanks to the efforts of KHH and highprofile New Zealand equestrians including the Wilson sisters, on average two-thirds of horses are now saved from slaughter and re-homed. Fieldays celebrating 50 years

Town and country came together in Wellington last week to mark the 50th anniversary of New Zealand Agricultural Fieldays, which was first held in Hamilton in 1969. Leaders from government, agriculture and business gathered in the Grand Hall in Parliament for the function, which included speeches from Director-General of Ministry for Primary Industries, Martyn Dunne, and New Zealand National Fieldays Society CEO Peter Nation. Fieldays is recognised as the largest agricultural

event in the Southern Hemisphere. The official launch at Parliament is 90 days out from the 50th anniversary of Fieldays, which will be held 13-16 June at Mystery Creek near Cambridge. Mr Nation said it was an honour to be hosted at Parliament’s Grand Hall, which is a privilege only offered to non-profit organisations and community groups. “Parliament is the powerhouse of New Zealand, and the opportunity to have our 50th anniversary launch event there indicates the significance of

Have your say

By Stu Kneebone, Waikato Regional Councillor, Waipa/King Country Waikato Regional Council’s (WRC) Long Term Plan (LTP) – our draft ten-year plan is now open for consultation and submissions. The draft LTP is WRC’s proposal of what we plan to do for the next ten years, and how we propose to fund it all. There are number of key things we are asking for feedback on. These range from how we utilize the returns from our Investment fund (generated from the sale of port shares several decades ago), putting more resourcing into pest and catchment management work, and a new framework to fund sub-regional and regional facilities. Resourcing the pest management area is becoming increasingly challenging, as we not only need to maintain the work on existing pests, but also respond to new incursions such as Velvet Leaf and Kauri Dieback. Wallabies have been slowly encroaching from the Bay of Plenty for some time now, and are now becoming a serious threat, so we plan to work with Bay of Plenty Regional Council to prevent them from becoming established in the Waikato. There has been a decrease in nationally-funded work to control possums as TB in wildlife is bought under control, so WRC is proposing to spend more on pest control to “maintain the gains”, rather than let the pest numbers build up again. WRC manages approximately $500 million worth of assets in the form of 620km of stop banks, plus various pump stations and floodgates, and the cost of maintaining and operating this infrastructure continues to increase. As well as protecting farmland, these assets protect parts of the state highway network, rail infrastructure and many rural towns. We are proposing to take on external borrowing to help fund the work that these assets will need over the next 50 years, but we are also talking with central government as we believe the costs should not be borne entirely by the region as these assets are also protecting

Stu Kneebone, Waikato Regional Councillor, Waipa/King Country nationally-significant infrastructure. We have also developed a framework to help enable the region to work collaboratively together to help fund sub-regional and regional community sports, recreation, arts and cultural facilities that have region-wide benefits. There is also a proposal to increase the scope of the regional services fund to include LandSAR (search and rescue). The fund currently collects $630k/year to help surf lifesaving, coastguard and the region’s rescue helicopters. We are also proposing that the region make a contribution towards the cost of establishing a new regional theatre in Hamilton, with several different proposals for funding this. The LTP consultation document and more detailed information is available on the WRC website. Consultation closes at 4pm on April 16. Stu Kneebone Ph 021 943 055 Councillor Waipa/King Country

Fieldays to the country,” said Mr Nation. “Fieldays is important to New Zealand’s primary industries. For 50 years we’ve been bringing urban and rural communities together and working to advance agriculture through technology, education, innovation and internationalisation.” The New Zealand National Fieldays Society board also attended last week’s event, along with representatives from top New Zealand agricultural organisations and businesses.

In addition, a large group of MPs attended, as well as senior officials from Ministry of Primary Industries and Callaghan Innovation, which demonstrated the strength of connections between Wellington and Mystery Creek, said Mr Nation. This year’s theme is ‘the future of farming’ and will focus on agricultural trends and ideas, with the aim of starting a discussion on what farming’s future will look like for New Zealand.

Tragedy leads to fundraiser Waikato dairy farmer Zara Cosh admits “it’s been tough” dealing with the death of her close friend Colby Harris. Harris, who was second-in-charge on a 300cow dairy farm, took his own life last December. “Not having Colby around anymore has been hard,” said Cosh. “I miss him so much.” The pair were both active members of NZ Young Farmers. In the weeks prior to his death, Harris had qualified for his first Waikato/Bay of Plenty Regional Final of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year. The contest was held in Rotorua earlier this month. “It was a tough day for me, having to compete without Colby there,” said Cosh who was also a finalist. “As I was completing the modules, I imagined him laughing at all my little stuff-ups and safety violations.” Harris’ spot on the day was left vacant as a mark of respect and finalists’ hats were embroidered with his name. Cosh also had the words “in memory of Colby Harris, much loved friend” embroidered on her sleeve. “Colby’s mum was messaging me throughout the day and his dad was there and told me he was proud of my performance,” said Cosh. “That support meant a lot.” Cosh is urging people in rural Waikato to get off the farm and attend a special comedy night on April 21. Internationally acclaimed comedians Andre King, Nick Rado, Paul Ego and Tarun Mohanbhai will perform at the Sir Don Rowlands Centre in

Karapiro. “Tickets are just $10 each, with all proceeds going directly to Farmstrong,” said NZ Young Farmers chief executive Terry Copeland. “It should be a great night with lots of laughter.” “NZ Young Farmers is proud to help organise this important, much-needed event,” said Copeland. “We want to be a leader in supporting and nurturing the health and wellness of young New Zealanders.” General admission tickets are available by visiting www.youngfarmers.co.nz/nzyf Visit www.farmstrong.co.nz for more information and places to access support.

Farmers make a pitstop for health By Steph Bell-Jenkins Sitting in a makeshift medical clinic at Farm Source Cambridge, sharemilker Kelly Dreadon watches with interest as Wintec nursing student Georgia Cullen slips a pressure cuff over her right arm. Having your blood pressure measured can be a nerve-racking experience when you work in a high-stress industry like farming, Kelly says, so she’s pleased when the gauge delivers a healthy reading. “Doing this again in calving would be educational,” she observes. Kelly and her husband Warren, who 50/50 sharemilk 300 cows just north of Cambridge, visited the Farm Source store this month for a free

DairyNZ Health PitStops check. They had their blood glucose levels, cholesterol and blood pressure tested by Wintec nursing students, who also measured their height, weight and waist circumferences. The couple then took DairyNZ’s online questionnaire, answering questions to build a richer picture of their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Having taken a PitStop check at last year’s Fieldays, Kelly was keen to find out how her indicators were tracking after recent efforts to eat healthier. “One of the interesting things I found out talking to the nurses was about cortisol and stress making weight loss harder,” she said. “For me sleep – I

don’t get a lot of that – so again it makes being healthier a lot harder.” Warren was surprised to find his cholesterol was low and appreciated the chance to review his health, since he didn’t often visit his doctor. For Kelly, the snapshot reinforced the need to find more time for “recreation, exercise and good sleep”. Autumn was a good time for farmers to “take stock and focus a little bit more on your balance”, which she and Warren were already trying to do, she said. “We’re all working and living in our businesses and if we fall over that’s it in a way – there’s no safety net. You’ve got to be firing on all cylinders to make things work...if you do get sick it takes its toll not only on you but on your family, your business, your colleagues, so you need to look after yourself.” The couple “absolutely” recommended the PitStop check to other farmers. “It only takes 5-10 minutes and if it does alert you to something then it’s a win,” Kelly said. DairyNZ’s Health PitStops project, which began in 2010, was funded by a seven-year programme led by DairyNZ, Fonterra and other commercial partners, in conjunction with the Ministry for Primary Industries, and offered at events such as National Fieldays. With the programme about to end, Fonterra’s Farm Source networks and national nursing students have teamed up to keep the PitStops project running under a sustainable business model, so farmers can continue to take advantage of it. All go at Takapoto By Steph Bell-Jenkins A glamorous new equestrian event created by philanthropic local couple Mitch and Kate Plaw looks set to stay following its successful launch in Cambridge this month. The event, Takapoto Estate Showjumping, has been heralded as “the dawn of a new era for show jumping in New Zealand”. It took place at the Plaw family’s 600-acre property, Takapoto Estate, on the shores of Lake Karapiro near Finlay Park Adventure Camp, where guests arrived to enjoy four days of upmarket Amongst those competing at this year’s Takapoto Estate Showjumping competition were Cambridge equestrian star Sam McIntosh and her New Zealand teammates Bruce Goodin, Richard Gardner and Daniel Meech, who made history by winning this year’s first show jumping FEI Nations Cup event in the United Arab Emirates in February. McIntosh is currently living in southern France and building up a team of horses for five-star shows with the Plaws’ help. “It was a short trip back to New Zealand for me to be a part of the very first Takapoto Estate show, but not one I would have missed for the world,” McIntosh said. “To see how the show went from being paddocks one year ago to a world class competition complex now was just astounding.” McIntosh, 42, grew up in Cambridge and still considers it home. “This is huge for NZ and a vital step in the preparation for the World Equestrian Games in Tryon in September.”

hospitality and top-level competition. With around $70,000 in prize money up for grabs, the event attracted 432 horses and 239 riders – and global media attention. “Since the show we’ve managed to get coverage in an American website and a French magazine, and the reach was also throughout Germany as well, so we had really amazing exposure around the world,” said show director Jaime Campbell. “I think our Facebook pages the first week had 56,300 views and the next week was still 52,000 views – it just went absolutely insane.” Campbell said the event’s creators, Cambridge couple Mitch and Kate Plaw, were “really into backing sport” and had sponsored the Black Sticks hockey team, Olympic rowing duo Hamish Bond and Eric Murray, and Cambridge’s Avantidrome cycling centre. “They really know what it takes – they’ve worked with some incredible people – to get to the top in the sport,” she said. Campbell, who has ridden and trained in Europe, said the event was about lifting the standard of New Zealand show jumping and taking the sport to a new level. “A lot of places in New Zealand don’t have facilities that have great footing or great stabling or great jumps, so our idea was to create a similar experience to what riders have in Europe,” she said. The Takapoto team employed one of the country’s best course designers, imported special lightweight gear from Europe, and used carefully placed sprinklers to ensure correct footing, Campbell said. It also targeted the corporate business community with top notch hospitality.

“We wanted to make it similar to what you’d experience if you went to the polo,” said Campbell, who ran Auckland’s Karaka Spectacular show two years ago. The Plaws are planning to build on the success of this year’s event, expanding it from one week to two in 2019 and beefing up prize money. Approaches about incorporating other disciplines – show hunter, dressage and eventing – in future are being considered. But right now, the focus was on “finishing a few things on the property” and installing “a lot more infrastructure” in preparation for next year, Campbell said. “It’s just basically trying to grow the event to Takapoto Estate Showjumping attracted 432 horses and 239 riders earlier this month. the next level.” Photo by Cheleken Photography.

The new kids on the block By Candice Gollan

Margaret Park NZ, the newest rehabilitation and conditioning farm for horses in the Cambridge area, is making a real splash. Josh Barker and his partner, Maggie Thiede, are the brains behind the operation. It was Josh’s idea to finally open a rehabilitation and conditioning farm, after years of wanting a facility like this for their own horses. “It’s all Josh’s fault,” laughed Maggie. “There was nothing like this [Margaret Park NZ] around when we needed it,” she added. “Anything to help the horses is important,” Josh said. Margaret Park NZ has hit the ground running,

with the first cold-water spa in New Zealand. The spa is specifically designed for horses and can chill the water down to 2 degrees Celsius. The water temperature and level are fully adjustable and can be adjusted depending on the horse’s injury, and each individual horse will receive a tailor-made programme created by the team at Margaret Park with guidance from veterinarians. “Nothing is a magic wand,” Josh cautioned, but added that “we know this can help.” The spa runs with salt water, which is wellknown for its disinfectant properties, meaning that it can help speed up the healing process of wounds and treat swelling at the same time. “There is a three-part filtration system for cleaning the water to use it again,” Josh said.

Diamond jubilee for Tirau Earthmovers Tirau Earthmovers, which is celebrating its 60th birthday this year, is a family business in the truest sense of the word. The company’s roots go back to a man named Alan Hole, who returned from serving overseas in WW2 and bought a truck to cart metal for the Public Works Department in Tirau. Alan quickly progressed into owning and operating three International bulldozers and scoops, which were carted around the district using an International transporter. He formed his own company, Alan Hole Ltd, in 1957 and Steve’s father Bill Ensor, having left school at 15, went to drive a bulldozer for Alan.

Bill then went to work as a grader driver at Matamata County Council until 1960, when the opportunity to buy Alan out came around. Bill and wife Bev bought the company for the tidy sum of £10,000, picking up “three bulldozers, a truck, a house and a couple of operators”. The couple changed the company’s name to Tirau Earthmovers in 1964 and that name remains to this day, despite the workshop being located to a space behind Putaruru High School in 1972 and the entire operation then shifting to its current location at 1906 SH1 in Putaruru in 1990. The business has operated successfully for 60 years, growing from a single truck operation to a

large contracting firm with a comprehensive fleet of trucks and heavy earthmoving equipment that now serves the agricultural industry and major industrial sites across the Waikato region. Steve graduated from Waikato Technical Institute with an NZCE in civil engineering, and after three years as a lab technician with Firth Industries in Hamilton his father lured him over to the family business. “Billy said to me ‘we’ve got this big job in Tokoroa, big subdivision. Do you want to come and join the ranks and give me a hand?’ So in about June 1985 I resigned, came back here and we still haven’t done the job. It fell through!” Steve stayed with Tirau Earthmovers and his father soon put him in charge of daily operations. Steve’s first son Kieran was born in 1989,

followed by James in 1991, Raymond in 1992 and Damian in 1993. Steve’s sons all went to primary school in Putaruru and then to St Peter’s School in Cambridge, where he supported them all on the rugby sidelines. The dedicated dad also encouraged his boys into motorsport, joining “mini stocks” at the local speedway. Steve bought the business from his parents in 2003 and his sister Karen has been its finance manager for the past 15 years. In 2012 Steve expanded into Cambridge, buying John Lamont’s business, Bobcat Services. And now that his boys have grown up, they are all part of the team as well, proving that Tirau Earthmovers really is a family affair – still going strong after 60 years.
