WELCOME Volume 10, #1: AEP’s Signature Event I cannot begin to describe how excited I am with the AEP Worldwide Signature Event just around the corner. I seriously want to giggle right now. I’m not sure what a serious giggle would sound like, but I digress. Around January of 2010, we (the staff of American Entertainment Magazine) were a bit despondent. After a fun and successful run as partners in the International Association Of Corporate Entertainment Producers annual conference showcases, the group decided to shut down any showcasing related to the association and split with AEM.

As editor of Campus Activities Magazine® for the past eight years, I have seen how well the sense of community and business grows when the buying and selling of entertainment is taking from print, email and phone lines into a forum of true social interaction. We’ve seen it time and again in the campus market: showcasing works for buyers and sellers, educational sessions are valuable and, above all, people just like to look each other in the eye and share a smile now and then. With the promise of this type of event gone, we were pretty bummed out. But then came the spark... or the “light bulb” or “A-ha” moment. As editor of both publications, I realized I was communicating with buyers and sellers from every single facet of the business that buys or books entertainment. Many of these folks knew each other and many crossed over various market lines, but so many more never knew these pockets existed or if they did, how to breach them. In the corporate, performing arts and casino markets, many of the buyers there face the paramount challenge of just how to continue to appeal to younger audiences as time develops. They should have to look no further than the campus market, where the talent is so much on the cutting edge care needs to be taken not to get cut. Conversely, corporate, casino and performing arts buyers often gain an edge when it comes to booking name talent. Their budgets are bigger, but a side benefit of this is their ongoing relationships with major talent representatives. These are the folks who have a direct pipeline into the best tour avails AND, they are experts in making the entire show a success. This is PRODUCTION, not just talent buying. Many a school’s bubble has been burst when they realize the $25,000 budget they have won’t come close to putting on an event for the $25,000 talent they have picked out. Experience is vital here. These are two very quick examples, and there are enough left out there to represent the layers of an onion many times over. Can you imagine the combined pool of expertise, talent, performers and connection available when you take six or eight, or even 10 different unique and distinctive markets and combine them into one well-oiled and engineered machine? We can, and it’s called the Association Of Entertainment Professionals Worldwide. Alyssa Bentley, with Valera Music Group, an outfit based in Los Angeles dedicated to finding and cultivating the freshest and hottest new artists of tomorrow, is a gorgeous and talented hot ticket item that doesn’t make compromises when it comes to making great music, or being a great entertainer. And, she knows how to be professional.
“My show foremost features a live band,” she says in a sure voice. “I love performing with a live band and feel like it gives a completely different level of energy. I have a great four piece band made up of some of the best musicians in Los Angeles.”
Like any musician of originality, nailing down what to label her style is a bit like nailing Jell-O to the wall, but Alyssa is comfortable and realistic enough to put a pin on it. “Well, I call my music ‘pop,’ mostly because it is the easiest label,” she quips, burbling laughter. “Pop is really generous, you can use it to describe a number of styles as long as it is music that can be played on Top 40 rhythmic radio. And mine is, it’s Top 40 music, but each song has a little bit of a different flavor to it.”

While Alyssa has the flexibility needed to conform within the needs of private events, she does maintain certain standards that not only protect her artistic vision and integrity but above all, ensure the best possible experience for the true end-user, your audience. Alyssa is an independent artist, but that doesn’t mean she has to force that independence on every gig she plays. Despite being a very talented musician, singer and songwriter, she also knows a cover or two. “I write all of my own lyrics and melodies, so my personality is definitely captured in the songs, but I am open to singing songs that other people have written as well, if it’s something that connects with me and I feel I might actually say as well. My favorite song to cover is Prince’s “Purple Rain.” I think by writing one’s own lyrics or truly embracing a cover, an individual stamp can be placed upon the performance that can’t be replicated otherwise.”

My music encompasses a little bit of each my inspirations, so I have some songs that are driven more by No Doubt with a reggae/rock appeal and others more inspired by artists like Rihanna driven by pop and dance. It fluctuates here, there and everywhere in between.” Alyssa relates the reason for her eclecticism to be the same one most would cite for being blase´toward by lackluster pop. “I get bored too easily,” she laughs. “I like things to be uniquely interesting. I am not sure about everyone, but I am not a person who likes to listen to an album and feel each song just blends into the next one. I like for there to be real moments, peaks and valleys and distinctions in the songs. That is one of the things I really appreciate about artists like Rihanna, her record is kind of all over the place and I like it. It used to be artists were told it was not okay
and that songs do need to fit all in a certain mold, but lately with the music industry evolving the way it has artists have become more daring and are experimenting with a wider variety of influences. This makes me very glad (laughs).”

Too long have we been allocated one segment of the marketplace in which to do business. In the current economic environment, that simply does not make sense. Our goal as an association is to bring all the segments together to not only share business practices and learn how to solve problems, but you expose you to new and emerging talent you would never see if you were relegated to your own little world. But perhaps the biggest benefit is the networking opportunity. That alone is well worth the price of your being here.

You have the benefit too of a professional organization not run by volunteers alone, but investors and a staff dedicated to making sure your voice is heard and your suggestions are considered. It is important to us that we build this organization so you can receive maximum benefit from your membership and/or delegate fee. With that said, please understand that AEP is not intended to replace organizations like NACA, APCA, APAP and others, but to compliment them. I would also encourage each of you to attend the Town Hall Meeting (Wrap It Up) on Wednesday (11am-12 Noon). Your feedback is important in making decisions for future conferences and determining the path of this association. One of the most exciting things about American Entertainment Magazine and by extension, and The Association of Entertainment Professionals, is the diversity of every live entertainment buying market both the magazine and the association encompass. From corporate events buyers to theme parks, AEM covers the spread and each issue, we will be speaking with top flight talent buyers across the country. This month, we are very excited to feature a buyer who happens to span the seemingly wide gap between these markets. Troy Pederson is a casting director for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts and Disney Event Group. Based in Orlando, Troy is part of a global team split between locations in Florida and California, casting talent for properties and events the world over. “We work under the same umbrella that casts for Walt Disney World and I cast for all the parks including Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and all of our resorts in Florida. I personally cast and book all the variety talent that we contract.” Sounds like a pretty exciting job! If one were to choose to cast any type of entertainment, surely the Vaudevillian scope and appeal of variety entertainment would be one of the most spontaneously interesting. “It is very exciting,” Troy laughs. “I am not just looking for a singer or only for dancers, I have the opportunity to look for all of those and more.” Troy’s scope of expertise is a bit wider than even the catch-all term “variety” might denote, as he elaborates further: “I actually get to look at all types of talent because I also happen to cast all the actors, singers, dancers, musicians, DJs and other talents for our corporate events as well. It isn’t just the variety talent for the parks I deal with, when it comes to corporate events, I end up working with literally anything under the sun.” If you were thinking this might be one of those rare dream jobs, take it easy. “I am fortunate enough to be a part of the team I am on because we have some of the most brilliant people in the entertainment industry and its a true joy not only to do what I do, but to be able to tap into the knowledge and expert-
ise of my network. If I am looking for something and can’t find it or need to cast a very specific type of act I can always reach out to people on my team. ” Troy credits networking events as a great means to expand one’s base of knowledge and connections for finding just the right fit. This connectivity was the impetus for the Association Of Entertainment Professionals, where buyers like Troy and a variety of artists and agents can huddle up to put their heads together on the best acts for their clients. We are proud to have him personally as a member of our National Advisory Board and look forward to seeing him at our Signature Event in Las Vegas where we hope to bring an entirely new dimension of cross-market networking to the forefront. “Networking with people I have met at showcases is huge. That has helped me not only tangibly in finding talent on the spot and making new connections, but mentally as well. I have had numerous conversations with people I have met at showcases in the past who I am still in contact with and tossing around ideas and talent options. If I am looking for something in particular (or don’t know what I am looking for at all) I have a network of people I can trust that I reach out to.” Not to toot our own horn, but it makes us quite proud here at AEM to know the magazine has become a valuable resource to Troy as well. “The magazine itself was actually one of the first places I saw a strong lineup of showcase talent displayed which spurred my decision to make the trip to a live showcasing event. Since then, I have been going and booking talent from live industry showcases. Entertainment trade publications, showcases and holding auditions for specific talent are my main avenues for finding the performers and shows I need to fill slots at our properties and for our corporate clients who are having their events produced by Disney Event Group.” Troy tells us, as a buyer for Disney in his various capacities, what sort of talent meets the requirements for making “the happiest place on earth” a little more cheerful still,

along with being ideal for special events run through DEG. “I personally look for things that are family friendly and professional from beginning to end, not just necessarily within the act. I want to see the performers themselves act accordingly on and off stage. Those are the types I am comfortable working with and associating my reputation with. Do they carry themselves well backstage? Do they work well with the production teams? The truly great talents are easy to work with on the back end, and we’re always happy to use them again.” It is quite easy for talented performers conditioned to audience adulation to lose sight if this facet of the business. “I feel that in corporate events in particular this is true,” Troy says. ”They forget the fact that they are there for the client, not vice versa. The client didn’t come to watch them perform and I think that can be the most challenging facet of special and corporate events when it comes to finding the right talent to work with. I understand that you are great, have been doing this your entire life and have spent your life savings preparing and paying for all this but at the end, for me, O have to please the client.” Troy is a guy great at his job and loves it, but really, what’s not to love? It offers excitement, spontaneity and fulfillment and so does Troy. That’s the sort of person we should all strive to work with and on that note, why don’t you? STORY BY IAN KIRBY Mike Super is THE “Phenomenon.” No, seriously, that’s his official title, earned “live” in a magic competition of the same name, the only one on primetime network television and voted on by viewers at home. Immediately capturing the audience of the NBC reality show “Phenomenon,” seen by over 8 million viewers, Mike Super went on to beat some of the top mystifiers in the country for the title. Already his own tour de force in the campus market, Mike was a veteran entertainer before ever stepping on the stage of the television show, Even pulling down an impressive Entertainer Of The Year win in the Reader’s Choice Awards of AEM’s sister publication, Campus Activities Magazine®. Since then, he has used the notoriety gained from the win to propel himself into elite performances for corporate events, performing arts centers and casinos across the country. Now anticipating his showcase performance for the Association of Entertainment Professionals at the Signature Event in September, Mike has his sights set on continuing to increase his presence in all of these markets. “Since ‘Phenomenon’ I have had the wonderful opportunity to do a lot of high-end corporate national and international meetings. I just performed an event with Dish Network that was absolutely amazing. There were 5,000 in attendance and we put together a custom magic stage show just for them.” Mike happened to be performing this event with “American Idol’s” Daughtry and 80’s hair metal icon Brett Michaels of Poison. He
doesn’t come right out and say it, because if you know or have ever worked with Mike Super you know one of his most notable features is his down-to-earth openness and modesty, but apparently the reactions to his performance were the strongest of the three. “I ended up getting a huge standing ovation beyond even what those guys saw.” Reading that comment might lead one to infer Mike is slighting his own talent while boosting theirs, but don’t be confused, this guy is a natural...or maybe even sup…no, ok...resist the easy and obvious pun...get yourself together man...ok, whew, sorry about that. Moving right along, this is a guy who’s skill and personality correlate and combine into something special. Not only does he have the chops to wow any audience and keep a fabulous and funny rapport up, but the professionalism and wherewithal to adapt his show into any setting for any audience. A market where Mike Super cannot play does not exist (remember can’t is the word, not won’t before anyone tries to book him for a seedy club down a dark alley in Rio). He displays total adaptability. “We just did a show with LifeTouch, the largest employee-owned company in the photography industry and one of the most successful portrait studio companies in the world (their studios include all of those in JC Penny and Target). It was for probably close to the same audience size, well over 4,000 and the show also featured Louis Anderson. We did a customized trick with them.”

SEE HIM SHOWCASE MONDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 19 Performing on Comedy Central, the Bravo network, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Mind of Mencia and winner of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing”, comedian Josh Blue has been working tirelessly to become one of the most well known and best liked comedians in the industry. With a strong work ethic and positive persona, Josh’s rise to the top has been no fluke. While the hard work and close attention to detail Josh exhibits have played a large role in his success, it is how he carries himself off stage that keeps people coming back for more. Josh’s brand of comedy breaks down stereotypes of people with disabilities in an original and hilarious way. Having Cerebral Palsy, Josh is able to take an approach to such sensitive subjects that few could. In fact, during his act, his wayward right hand takes on its own persona as being a separate entity from Josh entirely. He has dialogue back and forth from his mind to the mind of his arm, thus breaking down any awkwardness the audience may have and allowing immediate comfortability. Josh was a successful touring comedian long before his big win on “Last Comic Standing”. As anyone who has
been featured on the show before, “Last Comic Standing” is a show for professional comedians to compete. The exposure the show allowed gave Josh the boost into the lime light he needed. “That show just blew me off the charts. When you are featured on primetime network television 14 weeks in a row, and then go on to win it, that really does blow your career up. I still can’t go outside without some going, ‘Hey ‘Last Comic Standing,’ whoohooo!’ It’s really a test to what the show has done. People on the show come and go. I feel very fortunate to have kept it up since the season’s conclusion. The most exciting thing is that when people come to my show they already have high expectations and I am able to exceed those expectations with my live performance.” It would be typical for a comedian to consider a win on “Last Comic Standing” to be the pinnacle of his/her career. But Josh stands apart from the norm in all aspects. In fact he is booking more dates and reaching broader demographics than ever before. “After being on TV you get this huge following but the further away you get from that exposure you kinda start sliding backwards. But the thing with me is that I have maintained that plateau. I have

had more ticket sales this year than the last. This business can be unpredictable. What works one week doesn't necessarily work the next. I feel like I am so fortunate have my career flowing the way it continues to.” There is more to a performer than just the one hour set on stage. While the pure entertainment value of the set is the main draw of any entertainer, the entertainment buyer wants to know how easy or difficult it is going to be to work with any given artist and their team. “A lot of the time people do not recognize that the comedy is the easy part. The hard part is all the leg work that goes into doing the media and being in the lime light and embracing it. One thing I do every show is to go out into the audience after the show and shake peoples’ hands and thank them for coming out. That’s one of the best ways to get a repeat customer. Because when you do that it becomes a story for that audience member to go and tell people after the show. I don’t think enough comics are doing that right now. They feel like they deserve everything they have already instead of working to get to that next level.”

With the amount of talent there is floating around it would seem easy to bring in an entertainer to an event that would suffice. But Josh Blue has the heart and desire to do much more than just get by. Listening to him speak off-stage you can really get a sense of the passion he has, not only for his craft but for people in general. Unlike so many entertainers who experience the rush of television fame, Josh has remained both humble and dedicated to making himself and is act better than before. He brings an uncanny approachability with him everywhere he goes. “Along with that, I have a really great management team and a wonderful publicist who exhibits the same qualities I’ve been talking about. They too are easy to work with and remain approachable. It takes a strong group of people to make a well oiled machine. One thing I really do pride myself on is that not only am I easy to work with but that my team is also. One of the best compliments I can get is when some-

There was a musician one time that was on before me who was playing these really foul and disgusting songs. And while there is a place for it, it sad to see it so misplaced in a showcasing event. However I do not foresee this being a problem at AEP. But these events are what I was talking about when I said it’s important to put in the leg work. They can be exhausting but also can be so crucial in terms of getting you a presence in the various markets. It’s an interesting scene with its own unique vibe. ”
Those of us who love stand-up comedy know how difficult it can be to be original. Originality is what makes the George Carlin’s and the Louie C. K.’s of this world so incredible to watch. When a strong comedian finds their unique voice, it can bring insight to otherwise sensitive subjects our minds neglect due to our lack of understanding. These are the comedians that change our perspective on this world. There is no doubt

Beyond the world of stand-up comedy, Josh entertains in another exciting way. He is a member of the men’s U.S. Paralympics Soccer Team. “My team just qualified for the 2012 Olympics. I was not able to be there due to touring. But am going to be able to play with them in London in 2012, as long as I can get back into shape. Is has been difficult to keep up with that being on the road so much. And it’s hard to come home after being out on the road and say to my wife, ‘I’m here, but now I have to go play soccer, so bye’. Wives don’t enjoy that very much. She is cool with it and gave me permission to pursue 2012 though. I have played soccer my entire life but have’t always played on a team. In the seventh grade I tried out and the coach cut me from the team. If I said it did’t set me back a little bit I would be lying; but I continued to play on my own. I would love to see that coach
now and rub it in his face - just a little.” Josh Blue has had an exciting ride so far and is continuing to become better and better at what he does. Not only is he hilarious, but his great attitude towards life and his tremendous work ethic continually allow him to be one of the better touring stand-up comedians around. He continued in these activities all through college and into graduate school. “I was in my first year of grad school and was attending an event that I was making a presentation for. One of the founders of the organization that held a conference every year approached me afterwards and told me he seriously thought I could make a living as a professional speaker if I really wanted to. I was kind of like ‘Really?’ (Laughs). Judson jumped right in from there and started developing a program and the content for it. “I just kept plugging away and after about three years started to see some value coming back from all the hard work I’d done.” Judson learned the incredible value of audience selection early on in his career, realizing that a speaker who doesn’t know who he is speaking to is of little use to anyone. “A lot speakers say ‘Oh, I’ll speak to whomever is willing to listen’ but I learned right away that you are better off picking and marketing and focusing on specific markets rather than trying to sweep broad generalizations over an uncommon group of people. Early on, I made myself a fiveyear plan in the college and higher education market. Just when my five years were up, the video for ‘The Evolution of Dance’ started hitting the big time. So, instead of having to figure out how to break into the corporate and special events markets, all of a sudden I had people in these places calling me to find out more about bringing me in for a presentation.”

One of the most significant things he told me was that I needed a hook. He told me, ‘You gotta come up with something, whether it’s a ‘bit’ within your program, something great to open or some outstanding closer. HERE COME THE MUMMIES
Over 5000 years ago, from the dry stretches of the not-so-fertile crescent wandered a nomadic, foul smelling people. A robust, well-endowed, and manly tribe, they were united through ancient rituals involving instruments capable of infinite fonkiness and overt sekshul innuendo. The Pharaoh, a mean mother (shutcho' mouth), hated the nomads and their ability to shred like a mofo all up in that biatch. But more than that, he hated the power of their righteous grooving to make drop the tunics of his five luscious teenage daughters. For years, scholars of the ancient world wondered what became of this group. Theories citing the Mummies' involvement in historical events from the Siege of Troy to the sacking of Rome, the fall of Pompeii and the sinking of Atlantis were initially scoffed at and dismissed as parlor quackery. However, in 1922, at a dig in the desert south of Tunis, Professor Nigel Quentin Fontenelle Dumblucke IV unearthed the ruins of an ancient discotheque and found a dozen stank-ass fonky mummies still all up in the act of rockin' tha hizouse. From these mummies, Professor Dumblucke learned of the powerful curse that doomed them to wander the earth throughout eternity, seeking the ultimate riff, the one that would allow these souls to finally rest after 5000 years of banging out solid fly grooves. To quote the Professor: "In their desperate quest for immortal peace, they rocked all the ancient empires of Earth on down to the grizound. They rocked Atlantis so hard, y'all, it ain't never been found". And now they're coming to rock your town with a funk so strong, it's gonna make all the cats explode. Strap in.

Tonic Sol-fa If you are coming to AEP’s Signature Event looking for a stand-out group, you had better be sure to see these guys. “We are a contemporary vocal group and sing everything a cappella,” says Shaun Johnson one of the four who make up the group. “So everything comes from our mouth or some other part of our body. “We all met while attending college at different schools and got into it. Many people ask us ‘Why a cappella?’ and I think the answer to that is we all loved to sing and wanted to perform, but we loved so many different styles of music, this is the only way we could think of to blend them all together. We also wanted to be extremely entertaining and not just sing the highest chords or the lowest notes we could. All of us had the common belief that a cappella was natural, a good fit for us and something that we could either go sing at a radio station or in front of 25,000 people.” A cappella is limited to almost no musical style outside of instrumental only tracks, and the influences of Tonic Sol-Fa’s members make up an eclectic array of influences. “I think when we started, we wanted to try to grab all the influences from each guy in the group. If you start with our bass, he really grew up listening to blues
and gospel music. Another guy only loves 70’s and 80’s music. I personally like country and the other guy in the group listens to R&B and pop. So, to fuse those together, we took each one and tried to add it in one way or another to each song we do, not mangling the original tunes, but giving them our own unique style. So, our bass Jared, may bring a certain rhythm to a song that we like.” Shaun says that despite their best intentions to be all inclusive of all their favorite styles, there were initially naysayers who claimed they lacked enough direction. “People would tell us in the beginning that we kind of had to pick something. When we did our first major label release, they said ‘OK, you have to be all pop, or all country; it has to be uniform and appeal to a certain demographic. It is interesting how much that has changed now with shows on TV like “Glee” or the “Great American Sing Off”. Different people are opening up for Michael Bublé now and there are vocalists that cross genres that are backing up famous artists. The scheme has changed so much that now, all of a sudden, we fit in perfectly.” Shaun explains that at the beginning, this band’s goal was not only to be successful, but to get out there and play gigs. Never were they worried so much about the big break around the corner that they

didn’t take every opportunity they could to sing; no gig was too big or small. “We thought to ourselves that since we would be performing at festivals, our own shows in theaters, corporate events, etc., we better have a wide repertoire because every one of those audiences is different. In the same way, each of us is different within the group. We thought it would be a cool way to represent our respectively diverse audiences by also honoring the musical styles each one of us cared about. We place it all within our own arrangements and put our Tonic Sol-Fa spin on it, but besides some original material we can do upon request (including custom messaging for corporate clients) we perform everything from 40’s swing and big band to current popular music. We try to match it to what we think the crowd will like and what the people putting on the show know about their audience. It really works for us. Rather than picking polka or whatever the record execs wanted us to pick, we do some of everything.” BOOK IT! rondell sheridan Making people laugh for almost 30 years now, comedian, actor, and director Rondell Sheridan is the real deal. With a long list of credits that include, “The Tonight Show,” with both Johnny Carson and Jay Leno, “Politically Incorrect” with Bill Maher, and of course the long running Disney series “That’s So Raven,” Sheridan is no stranger to the spotlight. Sheridan disarms audiences with a mixture of playful physicality and facial expressions. He’s continually shifting comedic gears that turn into hilarious epics. More recently, Sheridan has spent time playing shows in Las Vegas and cruise lines. “I think as a comedian that Vegas is one of the most difficult audiences to perform for. The reason being is that the crowds are so diverse. If I am playing the southeast or the midwest then I at least have an idea of the demographic I am playing , whereas a vegas crowed hits all ages, political viewpoints, and regions of the country.” Playing the cruise lines has become different and beneficial as well to Sheridan’s performance. “It’s interesting because a lot of the ships I have been on lately have very
large theaters aboard. Up to 1,500. So being able to exercise those muscles needed to captivate a large audience is great. But in turn, these ships also have comedy clubs aboard that seat only a hundred and remove the language restrictions thus providing a real comedy club feel.” Sheridans adaptability allows him to captivate audiences of all kinds. Sheridan’s career extends beyond stand-up and into both acting and directing as well. “I enjoy both acting and directing very much but prefer directing probably due to the challenges it brings. To take forty words on a page and conceptualize forty minutes of shots, motion, and expression and then bringing that to life is a great feeling.” Just a few of Sheridan’s directing credits include episodes of “Hanna Montana,” “That’s so Raven,” an”Cory in the house.” It is important for a comedian that plays multiple markets to be diverse and able to adapt to his audience. Sheridan does so exquisitely with his mixture of playful physicality, witty humor, and always hilarious facial expressions. But his true claim to fame on stage is his ability to

completely capture the full attention of his audience. “I remember back in the 80’s playing “Nooners” on collage campuses in the middle of a cafeteria with video games and TV’s everywhere trying to figure out a way to let people know a show was getting started. I would spend the first ten minuets of the show just trying to get the attention of the students and I thought to myself that theres gotta be a better way. So Thirty minutes before the show would begin I started playing music with my old sony disc-man. And as simple as it seems it worked. By the time the show would start the music had already gotten there attention and I could jump right in.” BOOK IT!
