We are very pleased to also introduce you to The Axis of Awesome from Creative Artists Agency. There are perhaps few thrills greater than the feeling of being an innovator, or at least the first among your network to find or do something. For agents, it’s discovering and cultivating unknown talent. For us here at Campus Activities Magazine®, there is no greater thrill than finding an exceptional artist available to our market at an unbelievable price that is almost an unknown entity, knowing full well the act will be wildly successful in the future. Past feathers in our lil’ ole cap include Dane Cook in 2004, Train in 1999, Jay Mohr in 1993, and even Dave Chappelle in 1999 – and those are just the cover artists, all of which went on to wild success and exponential fees compared to their asking price at the time of our features on them. We are proud to feature an exclusive offer from CAA for $4,999, good through August 31st, 2011. After their fall tour, the boys will be traveling back to Europe and Australia. Upon their return Stateside this price will be a distant memory. It is important to know that if you have a sensitive audience, these guys can work CLEAN. Starting in August Campus Activities Magazine® will begin the road to our 20th Anniversary and each issue will have a retro look at some of the stars we brought to you over those years. There will be a 20th Anniversary Celebration that I hope all of you will want to attend because we plan to bring you the stars. Stay tuned.

CAMPUS ACTIVITIES MAGAzINE® SUMMER ADVISOR’S EDITION 2011, 5

After confirming we can hear each other (even if shakily), introductions are made. As a writer, I had a little phonetic fun with expressing the Aussie in the quote above, but for my sake and yours, I’ll stick to the Queen’s English (give or take) from here, just run everything through your brain filter to sound Australian. Except for the editorial parts, those are me. I’m from South Carolina, so just insert the nearest hick stereotype accent here. “That was Benny Davis, of the Axis of Awesome, and this is Jordan’s voice, hopefully coming in loud and clear. If not loud, then hopefully at least clear. Right, I will stay in this position…” “And this is Lee, third and final member…” Lee is cut off as Jordan breaks in, “Oh, you’re face is way too close to mine.”

all talk overlapping each other...well okay perhaps that wasn’t a feat of editorial ingenuity and creativity, but at least I’m not losing anyone in a metaphorical vapor. (Did you see what I just did there?) To try to keep some semblance of order, we first must attempt to figure out which of these clowns is which in this pandemonium of lightning fast quips and ADD. “Well, this is Jordan speaking, I am the lead singer and moreover pretty much the best one.” “Umm, that last point is debatable, because I am Benny, the musical talent of the band, many people have said that’s because I’m not funny…” he says as I can’t help but laugh at the perfect delivery of deadpan sarcasm in these introductions. “...and that [his lack of funniness] is also debatable, as you can tell by what I just said.”

I suggest that perhaps the other two might need a scape goat at some point. “I am that goat,” Lee says. The funny thing (bring on the puns) about AoA is that while this is a band and a great music act, the show was born and bred in venues very different from ours’ stateside. They explain while comedy clubs in the U.S. are almost exclusively dedicated to spoken word standup with a comedy music act thrown in occasionally, in Australia what’s defined as the comedy club market is really much more of a variety act forum. So, this band didn’t cut their teeth on impressing musical connoisseurs, but folks who wanted to laugh. “We are all from Sydney, Australia,” Lee says “and we originally started in a knife fighting arena.” “Yeah,” Benny says. “I don’t know if you have seen the clips from ‘Beat It,’ but

The only unfortunate thing about Axis of Awesome is that they use the word 'Awesome' in their band name. This word just so happens to be one of my favorite words of all time and therefore greatly limits how I can describe how magnificent, talented, hilarious, and beyond amazing they were. They were not only a huge hit among the students, but superbly easy to work with. I wish them nothing but the best and I hope they make it big! (PS: Don't play Words with Friends with Benny, he'll kick your butt). Fontine Baptiste, Comedy Chair, Ohio Union Activities Board, The Ohio State University www.ouab.osu.edu

I orally relate to the trio the mental image I have of them huddled around the phone close enough to kiss. The imagery is confirmed. “Yeah, pretty much...and we’re on a bed too, mate. I’m very glad I brushed my teeth.” The interview is quickly devolving into a sort of bubbling witches brew of hilarity and nonsense which while simultaneously exciting and intoxicating, also leaves one with significant levels of dead brain cells. It’s like taking one fast talking smart mouth comedy type and...then finding two more just like him and putting them in a room together…where they

“Benny plays keyboards as well,” quips Lee, “and he’s been known to play the flute now and then too, isn’t that right Benny?” “How dare you,” Benny cuts back, “that's pretty big coming from a guy who plays the kazoo.” “This is Lee, I play guitars, bassoon, triangle, of course kazoo, ah-thank you… I’m like the ‘other’ one. You know how you have to have three people for a trio? I am the third one, otherwise we wouldn’t be a trio and this act just wouldn't work. These guys would get slightly more money, and that’s just not fair.”

those scenes are actually based on the story of us getting together. Jordan and I had our hands tied…what was it over, some fruit? Perhaps a stolen apple or something…” “Actually, it was just the segment of a mandarin. It was really trivial, we were very aggressive back then.” “I was just sort of in the wrong place at the wrong time really,” Lee says. “Where did you think you were?” Benny asks laughing. “I thought I was headed to a gun fight, didn’t realized I had crossed over into the knife fighting side of town.” “The real story,” Jordan says, “is far less interesting. We all went to university together and worked comedy

shows together, mostly improvised. We started a side project, which was this band and things blossomed and ballooned after a few things went viral on the Internet.”

edy rooms,” Jordan explains. “We did a lot of standup nights, improv nights, comedy festivals etc. We did a few music gigs but mostly it was comedy shows.”

“We are still looking forward to the day when we can get back to the knife fighting really,” Benny says wistfully, Lee agrees, “Yeah, I mean I have the scars, but memories only go so far. The crowds there are so exciting and cheer for blood and, we have blood to give.” Benny adds, “We do still miss our original fourth member, however.”

Lee explains the band’s evolution from there. “It developed as we gigged. We’d go to a comedy festival for a month and be in the same room doing the same show every night. That’s where the opportunities to meet promoters, bookers and get noticed in general was.”

I ask around what time the band was originally formed. Without thinking even for a second, Lee replies “I’d say somewhere between 9 and 11PM. Is that what you’re asking?” After a bit of clarification, it becomes known that the band has been together since September of 2006. The band’s wit and unique slant of humor is contagious and well-honed. “We mostly started gigging with comwww.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

“The comedy scene in Australia is very different from the U.S.,” Jordan says. “Variety nights are much more common and comedy clubs are set up for bands, jugglers or tumblers.” “Or a unicycle rider,” Benny pipes in. “Or a unicorn,” says Lee. “Also, there are those types of people that defy any genre or description, like the grinders. They wear a metal belt and take an angle grinder to make sparks shoot out of their crotch. It’s quite rare to find that caliber of entertainment.”

I immediately reply that I want to go to Australia and they have a good laugh. “So do I,” Jordan says sadly, “I want to see my mum!” Despite their International ties, the U.S. campus market is a huge priority for the Axis Of Awesome. “ “We want to do all of it. Our plans are for World domination…” Benny says, and sounds strangely like a twisted Austin Powers, despite the continental divide and a couple hundred years between the two cultures accents. “Our plans are to next come to your comedy…college…club…college comedy club thing,” Lee says. “Specifically YOU who are reading this,” Benny adds. “Or are listening to it, or are aware of its existence somehow, we are talking to you.” “We’ve done a lot of college gigs over the last two-month U.S. tour,” Jordan says, “and we’ve really enjoyed them a lot. They have been some of the best gigs we’ve ever played. Really

It’s well-crafted, clever and funny (their words) and its perfect for the campus market (mine). “we’re actually just quoting what we’ve heard, its not arrogance or anything.” Capping things off, a key thing to note about this band is their incredible flexibility. Unlike many acts born from the comedy club world, this one can be completely flexible and PLAY CLEAN. You might get the impression from a few of their website videos that they are an R-rated act, but in fact they can do a completely clean set upon request and will even customize their show for their hosts. “I think my favorite thing about playing the colleges is that we can go to any one of them and make fun of the college next door and they’ll go nuts! The best laughs we ever get are when we start ragging on their rivals, it brings the roof down. It’s a really fun and very cheap way to get laughs,” Benny says.

enthusiastic crowds who have had us play multiple encores, an action with which we are not accustomed and are quite flattered.”

Professional Athletes, which doesn’t help matters. “Well, how do you think I feel then?” Benny cries outraged. “This interview is over.”

“Multiple.” Benny says.

Once we all stop laughing we find out more about the show you can expect from AoA. Lee fills us in on the details. “Even though it is a musical act, we are definitely a comedy show and aim to have the audience laughing from start to finish. We play songs in a large range of genres from rock to boy bands to techno.”

“That means more than one,” Lee adds. Jordan says, “It has been a lot of fun and the students have been great and really nice, even though they’re starting to make me feel old. I’m a mere 29, but I feel like an old man. But I can tolerate it, if only for the laughter.” “I’m only 25,” Benny says. “and I feel just fine. Because they’re all taller than me.” The other two have a good laugh. “That was Benny, the short one.” Lee says. “Write that down.” I tell the guys we have something in common, I’m 28 and 5’6” but I wasn’t quite expecting the sudden explosion from Benny. “Oh well la-Dee-DA, look at you in your ivory tower with your extra 5 inches!” I comment 5’6” is still pretty short here in the United States of

“Many people have compared us to other acts like Flight Of Concords,” says Jordan. “I can see that in the fact that we are a very high energy act and like to have a lot of fun on stage.” “People have also compared us to Tenacious D,” Benny says. “But unlike them we don’t focus solely on rock, we do many genre parodies. We try to take a stab at every type of music on the planet and point out why they are funny.”

Programming Challenges With The Millennial Generation By Aysen Ulupinar, Tiffany Schmidt and Stacey Nordstrand University of Akron CALM DOWN. IT’S NOT THAT BAD! Working with millennial students is no small task. The millennial generation is both challenging and exciting at the same time. They expect information quickly, need to be recognized for the work they have done; they want constant electronic contact; they have a certain curiosity and “need to know.” They are fast paced and highly energized and student affairs professionals need to be ready to work with this group of students. In looking at theory and the relationship with the millennial generation, there are many applicable concepts that give a basis for ways to reach this new population. We obviously want our students to attend the events programmed for them on our campuses, but this generation needs more. Utilizing the concepts of Astin’s Theory of Involvement we can look at how to make our students feel invested. They need the feeling of belonging and connectivity in order to feel as though they should continue to go to an event or stay at the institution. The more engaged the students can be, the more likely they are to attend. As administrators in higher education, being intentional with student learning and personal development directly correlates to the quantity and quality of student involvement you will achieve with your programs!

When using Sanford’s Theory (1962) of challenge and support, we can assist our millennial students in their program planning and success when hosting events. Sometimes students need a push to step into the readiness of mature actions. Students of this generation also need the challenge, but in a way where they are supported and made to feel as though they are ready to move forward. Supporting them goes hand in

advisors, supervisors, etc., knowing the best way to work with these students can help those who see these students every day. Communication comes in the form of Facebook, text messaging, and online chatting. Many students spend several hours a day online and on their phones. This time takes away from personal contact or time that could be spent studying and doing homework. Many students feel that they cannot live without technology. So how can student affairs professionals use this technology to their advantage without being un-professional? For those who advise or supervise students of this generation, it may be easier to reach students through text messages instead of e-mail or even phone calls. Facebook is the place where students network with other people all over the world, but it has also recently become the place to advertise for student groups and events and get the attention of students on campus. Student affairs professionals can use this to their advantage by creating fan pages, events, posting pictures, and writing on student's walls in order to get them interested.

hand and really helps them to learn and grow throughout the process. Communication is huge with all students, especially the millennial generation. They want clear and concise answers and want to know exactly what is expected from them to succeed. As student affairs professionals,

Millennial students truly are a generation of so many descriptions. Their connotations could be positive and negative, but many are a group that wants to be pushed and truly strive to be successful. As professionals, encouraging the positive involvement and growth through programming, event planning, and campus activities, assists students in their success at each university. www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

NOT JUST A “THING”... How To Stretch Those Dollars.

By Jessica Pettitt With budget cuts turning to budget slashes and college campuses carrying the social weight of social justice trainings, what are you to do as a diversity programming board or campus activities advisor? It is a tough reality check that “doing more with less” doesn’t seem to answer. After working in Student Life for a decade, here are some free (yes, free!) suggestions on how to stretch the dollars you have left without looking further than your desk or adding something new to your inbox. It’s Not Just A Speaker Thing As a diversity speaker myself, I will disclose a secret. You have to pinky swear not to tell anyone. Ok? Lean close… here it goes… You are already doing Diversity programming on your campus.

Shhhh… don’t get so excited with your rebuttals, let me explain. On your campus, there are more than likely several departments that bring in speakers other than Campus Activities. Think about your academic departments, campus wide speaker series, alumni programming, etc. Campus Activities could co-sponsor (money) or co-market (visibility) with these programs. I encourage you to attend and bring your friends as well. Ask yourself when is the last time you attended (not worked) a program. You get to learn something too. Also, when working to bring in a speaker, bring in a diverse group of speakers that also speak to a wide audience. Does your relationship/safer sex program include LGBT relationships? Does your MLK Week speaker address sexism? Do you only bring in speakers of particular racial or ethnic groups during specific times of the year? If so, know that they can speak the other 11 months of the year on topics that

42, CAMPUS ACTIVITIES MAGAzINE® SUMMER ADVISOR’S EDITION 2011

are relevant to you campus too! Bringing in a speaker during their “off-peak” time actually can get you a discount on the program as well! This may see odd, but it is rarely done on campuses. I more often hear that additional programming is needed than I hear about groups supporting all of a campus’ initiatives and utilizing outsiders for a larger purpose. It’s Not Just A New Thing Take a second to jot down your university’s traditions, honor codes, and sayings. How can you use what the campus already rallies around to reach a broader audience with a more inclusive message? Take Homecoming, for example, and ask yourself how can you welcome back all of the students that make up your campus? What can you do to honor campus pride with non-traditional students, veterans, student parents, commuters, and those that don’t play or enjoy www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

sporting events? Utilize current themes and mottos to paint broader strokes of inclusion for all voices that make up your campus community.

How To Do More With Less.

It’s Not Just A Space Thing If you work on a campus that believes diversity or social justice programming is the responsibility of someone else, another department, or that a new student group needs to be formed first - I believe you are wrong. Use what you have. What if weekly discussion questions are posted on campus, in the student newspaper, or on dining hall tables? Could you start conversations – even difficult ones – and trust your community to have a dialog? If not, perhaps, offer on-going programming or resources on self-reflection, authentic dialog, intergroup conversations utilizing groups and academic departments already in place. Lastly, take someone to lunch! Start a “take the other to lunch campaign” – folks gotta eat right? If you can give discussion prompts and teach people how to talk to one another – not about what they know they disagree on, but to listen and learn about the people themselves – you are building connections and community! As I don’t work on only one campus, I host open dialog conference calls every month and have found that by providing a space, folks from all over the country benefit from great conversations. Sharing and listening is FREE! It’s Not Just An Outsider Thing What I find most exciting about social justice programming, is that everything that you need is already around you. No store runs or t-shirts required! Look around your office, campus or local community and see what is already happening. Moreover, find out from other people’s perspectives what is happening. To see other’s experiences on your campus – you have to ask. Why not ask for comments on a blog or facebook page? You could even go really old school, and have a blank bulletin board with a prompting question to solicit passing people’s feedback. For example, “Where do you feel safest on campus?” Then, do a conversation program there or at least contact the students, staff, faculty, and community members associated with www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

Jessica Pettit that space. On one campus, I got disposable cameras donated and asked members of my campus community to take pictures of “social justice.” This was open ended and I got lots of images to share with the larger community about the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful realities of that campus. I eventually took all of the pictures and connected them together into a social justice blanket that we displayed on the campus activities center to generate further conversations. You don’t always have to bring someone in from the outside to get an inside view of your campus experience. Take a good look at your programming and budget situation. Once you have access to your campus resources, traditions, and on-going programming, make it a priority to incorporate voices that are silenced but have lived experiences that are marginalized by the majority based story on your campus. Remember, social justice programming isn’t about doing something new or more with less. Social justice programming is about reaching a wider audience with broader strokes of reality, complexity, and intersectionality that make our campuses unique from one another. To continue stirring up conversations, contact Jessica directly at jess@iamsocialjustice.com. You will find Jessica in Campus Activities Magazine’s® 2011 DEAN’S LIST OF TOP RATED PERFORMERS BY AMERICA’S CAMPUSES.

More than a decade ago when visiting The University of Arkansas for a story in Campus Activities LIVE!, we found the board was actively involved in getting sponsorship from local businesses for various programs on their campus. Not only were they able to get advertising dollars to support higher-end acts and speakers but they were able to get support to help cover the cost of bringing in the act. Many campus towns have very active businesses who are reliant on students as a source of business income. It is certainly to their advantage to support the activities of the Campus Activities Board on campus. If you develop an active promotional program and assign every one on your board a few contacts, you will be surprised at how well you will be able to do. While most businesses probably could not support your bringing in the Black-Eyed Peas, donations and contributions could range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars and that could help you get you that one great speaker, novelty experience or help pay for a concert. It’s a win/win situation for the activities board and the local business looking to increase their exposure to students on campus.

“Keeping It On Campus”:

Overcoming Tough Financial Times As Programmers By Mark Hartley As the economy continues to restrict and student fees continue to soar, university departments face the daunting challenge of retaining students with high quality co-curricular programs using limited resources. The one resource; however, that can aide in the expansion of programs, while at the same time reduce expenses within individual units, is networking across departmental lines. At the California State University, San Bernardino, a medium size college halfway between Hollywood and Palm Springs, the networking epidemic is in full swing. A fresh new committee called Keep it on Campus* (KIOC) is mastering the art of networking by sharing resources in an effort to increase retention rates, create more school spirit, and save thousands of dollars amongst departments campus-wide over the course of the academic year. Keep it on Campus is comprised of professional programmers throughout campus. Naturally, departments such as Student Leadership, Housing, the Associated Students, Inc. and the Student Union are involved. But this committee took it a step further by inviting Theater Arts, Career Services, Athletics, the Library, the Bookstore, Dining Services, Recreational Sports, and even the university’s Museum to be a part of this interactive committee. With nearly 30 departments involved in the Keep it on Campus committee, no wonder spirits are high and involvement increased. While Keep it on Campus only meets “officially” once a month, the programmers have bonded in such a way that they seek each other out individually to plan activities, collaborate on programs, and confirm that programs are not overlapping or competing against one another. In addition, an interactive KIOC website (kioc.csusb.edu) was created where programmers can upload events, which are still in the planning phase. These programs can be seen by other programmers, but are not published to the public website until they are confirmed, scheduled and advertised. This behind-thescenes look at upcoming programs has helped reduce the chances of five separate Valentine’s events occurring on the same day. Key collaborations have thus been created simply because programmers are able to communicate with one another. Each department puts up the same money, or in many cases less money for the event, but has five times the population advertis-

ing and 1/5 of the work. Programmers are able to synergize with other like-minded individuals and create an event that truly benefits everyone. One such event took place early in Spring 2011. One of the top keynote speakers in the country, Dr. Will Keim, was passing through Southern California. Dr. Keim’s message is timeless, and his delivery is one of a kind. Students across campus have seen Dr. Keim during their first year orientation program, but wanted him to speak on the subject of Leadership in the 21st Century. Cal State San Bernardino was going to have to come up with some money and a plan to make this happen.

mix of athletes, Greeks, student leaders, and campus members. The Greek Councils recognized new initiates into the Gamma Sigma Alpha Honors Society, which showcased their continued commitment towards academic success. They then announced the remaining activities for Greek Week. The Athletic Department announced that over 50% of their student-athletes were at or above a 3.0 GPA, as well as that golf, tennis and baseball were competing in the postseason playoffs. These announcements allowed students outside of the individual constituency gain a deeper understanding of the others’ commitment to excellence. When the program was over, there was a crowd around to speak one on one with Dr. Keim. He proved once again why he is the “Dean of College Speakers.” His presentation was second to none and Keep it on Campus’ coordination of this Five-Star Program was top notch. To make the accounting easier for each department, six separate checks were handed to our speaker that night; however, one voice was delivered loud and clear. That voice was the voice of the KIOC committee saying, “We are committed to student success, working collaboratively, and increasing the quality of student life for all of our students.”

That is when Keep it on Campus leaped into action. With a few phone calls, some text messages and a mass email, it was determined that Greek Week coincided with the Athletics Departments NCAA speaker week. Coincidentally, Housing and Residential Life had just hired their new RAs for the next academic year and were beginning their training sessions. We were able to work with Dr. Keim on getting some other speeches in the area to get a multi-campus rate. The Student Union was asked to co-sponsor the event, which helps with the cost of an audio visual technician and Student Leadership agreed to chauffer and feed Dr. Keim for his stay. The day of the event went off without a hitch. Dr. Keim was escorted to campus and met with the returning and newly selected Resident Advisor staff. Once those leaders heard Dr. Keim speak, they were encouraged to go back to their halls and bring students to the evening program. The campus community was invited to the 7pm event. The place was packed. There was a large

Examining A Unique Ap

SPB COMMITTEE KE$HA HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE

For this special Summer Advisor’s Edition of Campus Activities Magazine®, we’re featuring the unique program board structure at Quinnipiac University. The program is overseen by Steve Pagios, Assistant Director of the Student Center & Campus Life. The bulk of activities on campus are actually split between two bodies, not completely unheard of, but the division is done in a unique way. We speak to Steve and student representatives of both Student Program Board (SPB) and Quinnipiac University After Dark (QUAD). “Quinnipiac has about 6,000 undergrad students and about 2,000 grad students and typically both of our programming boards are focused on the undergrads,” Steve says. “We have three campuses, Mount Carmel has the main core office, student center and freshman and sophomore housing. We have two brand new campuses, one in York Hill which is two years old and has a brand new student center that just opened this year as well as junior/senior housing.” In the final phases of construction, the campus will have a new wing of senior housing as well. The North Haven campus hosts most of the grad students with no student center and only academic components, however the campuses are all within 15 minutes. QU is mostly a residential campus and has an interesting dynamic in programming. “Primarily our activities are held on the Mount Carmel campus because the freshmen and sophomores come out to the events more and we have the most space on that campus.” The York Hill campus does see pro-

gramming at least once a month in the new student center. The activities at QU are funded 100% through student activities fees. “The Student Programming Board is technically part of the Student Government Association, basically as a committee. Our SPB President is actually an SGA executive officer. Our budget is allocated that way. The money used to fund QUAD’s activities comes directly from the Vice President of Student Affairs. “At the end of the day it’s all derived from student activities fees.” Last year SPB had 65 programs fed by a budget north of $200K while QUAD stretches their approximately $50K budget over programs every Friday and Saturday. The students join in the conversation, filling in details about how both bodies work and what they are seeking for students. Audrey Lawrence, Melissa Dowers and Lauren Wolman are QUAD’s President, Vice President and outgoing President respectively and members from SPB include Lauren Enea, President, Victoria Adler, Vice President, and Erin Hodgson, Culture & Diversity Chair. “QUAD programs every Friday and Saturday from ten until midnight; we offer alternative events for the people who don’t like to go out or party on the weekends,” Audrey says.

KE$HA ON STAGE

SPB RETREAT

“There are only one or two weekends the entire year that we don’t have programs,” Lauren adds, “in case of conflicts with bigger events like major concerts or sports.” “We typically focus on a variety of different events,” Melissa comments. “We have traditional things like bingo, moonlight breakfast and movies. We also have small venue performers come in, probably three or four times a semester. Then we have our homegrown events, which are whatever we can think of that we don’t have to contract outside help for. We did Adopt-AFish, make you own potted plant, fiesta night, Chinese New Year, we have many programs going on. SPB is the larger organization, with about 45 active members and a list serve of about 500. With a budget more extensive than QUAD and fewer events to do, live entertainment and major concerts fall much more into their realm. “Our large scale concert this past year was Ke$ha,” says Victoria. “That was the biggest and most well-attended event we’ve had; it was a sold out show. Everyone seemed to really enjoy it. “Last spring we brought in Marc Elliot, a motivational speaker with Tourette’s Syndrome. We love him; he is the coolest person ever and it was fantastic to have him on campus. We got the fraternities involved and had a huge turnout.” “For that event, instead of focusing on what people traditionally recognize as diversity programs, we did an ability awarewww.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

ness type of program,” Erin says. “We focused that on people living with different disabilities.” “We have had David Coleman twice now,” says Lauren Enea. “It went over really well both times. The first visit, I think we had about 80 people there and well over that the second. He is very well received here.” A few acts are QU traditions including a solid start to the year, and Victoria explains QU uses one and only one performer for this event each year. “We always have a hypnotist for the freshmen coming in and that hypnotist is always Sailesh. He is great, everyone loves him and he gets a huge turnout. We fill up the gym with standing room only.” “He actually filmed one of his promo videos at our school,” Erin says, quite excited by the prospect. Find it through our Facebook page and check it out to see some of the Quinnipiac students having what is obviously the time of their lives. QU has an interesting structure that has worked well for them. Get in touch with Steve Pagios if you think your campus might take a page from Quinnipiac’s book. “Last Comic Standing” Winner Josh Blue Signs On To Emcee AEP Worldwide Showcase in September The Association of Entertainment Professionals (AEP), has been pro-active in meeting the needs of college buyers as they involve more and more campuses in the development of the conference and on the National Advisory Board. W.C. Kirby, partner in AEP and publisher of Campus Activities Magazine® explains how important campuses are in the over-all scope of developing entertainment. “AEP was specifically developed with campuses in mind. Although this organization envelopes a lot of key entertainment professionals from every aspect of the marketplace, other buyers look to the campus market for many of the developing trends for the future. I can tell you that there have been many acts we have featured in Campus Activities Magazine® in the last 20 years that have gone on to be major artists for corporate and special

event buyers, performing arts venues, casinos, fairs, festivals, film and television. These acts played the college market at the beginning of their careers and it launched them and their success. These other buyers realize how much they can learn from campus activities programmers.” “But it is a two-way street. All these other professionals can provide a wealth of experience for both directors and students within the campus sector who may be considering making the entertainment industry a career. “Josh Blue, who will be emceeing one of the Main Stage Showcases, is represented by APA (Agency for the Performing Arts) in Beverly Hills. APA’s Senior VP for Comedy is Jackie Knobbe who is Josh’s agent, a member of AEP’s National Advisory Board and was once a student programmer.

Jackie will be one of the panelists in the Agency/Buyer Face-Off on Wednesday where buyers will be able to have an open dialogue with agents to try to resolve issues that have come up in booking acts from riders and contracts to pricing, transportation and dealing with unusual requests. This session will be key to campuses who not only may have a desire to book celebrity talent, but may also provide insight in dealing with issues involving any artist or program. The booking fee is only part of the expense a campus will have with a major concert or celebrity talent; this is a chance to get a first hand look at what an event can really cost before you stick your neck out. “We have had good response from traditional campus agents too and I think this will be a great opportunity to sit back, relax and talk to these folks. Wednesday’s highlight will be the anticipated Face-Off, where buyers and sellers can discuss and resolve problems that arise around the purchase and programming of entertainment or events. The Face-Off will be followed by a Town Hall meeting where everyone who attends the conference can discuss and make recommendations for 2012. “I am proud to have EastCoast Entertainment producing the showcases for us,” Kirby adds. “The production team from Atlanta has over four decades of experience producing major events and EastCoast has offices all over the United States. The general session producer will be Bob Higa from Chicago. Bob is a well-known corporate magician and produced the Main Stage for us when we were involved with IACEP in 2009. Bob is a remarkable person and a great entertainer in his own rite. “I also can’t say enough about The Green Valley Ranch and Resort. I was

there in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and the property was first-class. We have negotiated a great rate for our delegates of $115 per night and that includes the $24.95 resort fee. So our guests will be entitled to all the resort perks without having to pay extra. The Ovation, where the showcases will be held, is a state-of-the-art facility with built-in sound and lights. Not only does it have great acoustics but it can seat up to 500 cabaret style. “One of the reasons we chose Green Valley is that it is not on the strip. The property is a short ride from McCarren Airport in Henderson. The hotel does have shuttle service to and from the airport based on a published schedule. From my experience, it is much easier to catch the shuttle to the airport on your departure than trying to plan your arrival around their schedule. “If you want to come in early or stay afterwards, the hotel will honor the special AEP rates up to three days before and three days after the conference but you need to reserve for those days when you make your reservations because that block sells-out fast.
