The Art Of Submitting

ARTIST REPORT CARDS One of the most important influences in the buying process in the campus market is what we call ARCs or Artist Report Cards.

For the most part, they are a no-brainer if you understand the process and campuses that submit ARCs between June 1 and May 31 each year are in line to receive a complete week-end of free entertainment courtesy of one of Campus Activities Magazine’s® sponsors. But even if you set that aside, ARCs are your campus’ contribution to the buying process and it cost you absolutely nothing but a little bit of your time. This year there was a huge increase in reports submitted as you can tell from the pages that follow. More campuses became involved in the process and more acts and agencies requested that schools report on their shows. This coming year, schools will be able to complete the ARCs for their events on-line at campusactivitiesmagazine.com through a web form that is simple and easy to use and all you have to do is hit the submit key when you are done. However, we will continue to accept faxed and mailed ballots since many acts like to request the evaluation from the buyers right after the performance while the experience is still fresh. For artists who wish to continue the paper process, please consider these steps to avoid problems with your report:

1) Complete the name of your show in the artist line. ALWAYS be consistent with the name because ANY variation can cause your reports to split the results. An example might be “Amazing Jonathan” and “The Amazing Jonathan”. If you are not consistent with the title of the artist’s name or the name of the show, it can cause two separate entries, one under “A” and the other under “T”. Worse yet, it can split your total number of shows reported and knock you out of the chance to be included in The Dean’s List of over-all results.

2) Complete the genre of your show and the show date too before giving your report to the school. Often times schools can be confused about which genre they should report for the act, especially for variety acts that have comedy included with their shows.

You can eliminate that difficulty by pre-selecting the genre you consider that best describes your performance. Again, if you don’t pre-select a genre and the school selects something different, your results are now split between two categories and you don’t look nearly as impressive to buyers.

3) Have your form pre-addressed to Campus Activities Magazine® and pre-stamped. This is something Craig Karges introduced years ago and you will be surprised how much better your results will be. Be sure to print these forms on heavier (card) paper stock and pre-folded into three panels so all the school will have to do once completed is tape and mail them.

For campuses, we are going to require a little bit more information when completing the form online or the form the artist gives you. This information is simply to validate the form and allow us to contact you should we have any questions. A lot of times when you submit a form that has troubling results, we can get involved to help you resolve issues and repair a relationship. Here are a couple of pointers:

1) Performance Date is the actual date of the show, not the date you complete the form. If the show spanned multiple dates, indicate a range.

2) Attendance is important in that some acts do not do well before either small or large crowds. Others do fine with any crowd. If you don’t know the actual number, give us your best estimate. 3) Venue is the part of the campus, the building or room where the event was held. 4) School. Please give us the complete name of the school NOT an abbreviation like UWM. There are a lot of campuses with the same abbreviations and this confuses our database. Also please give us the complete city and state location for your event. A lot of schools have any number of campus locations and we need to attribute your report to the right campus.

5) Under title, we are not looking for Mr or Mrs. We need your title at your campus (i.e. Director of Campus Life, Coordinator of Student Activities, Chair of the Comedy Committee, CAB Member) 6) You do not have to rate an artist for each category but if it does not apply, please check NA, otherwise the artist gets a zero (0) for points in that category and it effects his or her over-all score.

7) Finally, assign one person to complete the artist reports for your campus or each particular show. When we receive multiple reports, the first one is accepted and the others are rejected.

Be objective in how you rate an artist. Avoid giving an artist all 5’s just because they are a campus tradition or you think they are cute. Other schools and even the artist need truthful and realistic reactions to the show at your school. So if there is something that needs improvement, your observation can help make that happen. If an artist or show was truly a memorable experience in every aspect, then give them the perfect score they deserve. An accurate score will make the final results much more realistic and dependable. Each section of this review form is intended to give other campuses your observations and if you give the show all 5’s where you were provided no promo, the agency was a chore to deal with or the road crew was unsatisfactory, it provides a false sense of security to other campuses considering this show. If you want to know how good an act might be that you plan on booking, just ask another campus where they have played. Here are reports from our readers for the last complete school year. All ratings here had complete verifiable information and were signed by the reviewer. All reports must have been submitted by the school where the date was played. These reports are comprised of reports previously printed as well as new reports received after the last published edition for the 2011/12 campus year. Artists report submission forms are available to every campus in the United States programming campus activities. You can receive the forms by requesting one from your visiting artist or their agency, by visiting campusactivitiesmagazine.com or calling us toll-free at (800) 7282959 for a pdf copy to be emailed to your campus. We only accept reports on the authentic form and only from the campus or institution. Reports may not be submitted by the artist or their agency. Schools do not have to rate in every category, only categories that apply to their show.

He also started the show 20 minutes late because he was “getting ready!” The road crew was so disrespectful of our student volunteers, bossing them around without manners. Even though we were on an all-inclusive contract, the crew complained to everyone but me about providing meals we were not responsible for. There was a severe lack of communication from Josh Landis. They insisted on a 9am load-in and did not show up until noon without calling or contact in any way. They kept the tour bus on campus despite my instructions not to and remained there until 3pm the following day, inconveniencing many faculty and staff members who lost their parking spots. The photographer can make a plate in 30 seconds or less but the students have to wait 15-20 minutes before receiving their photo. Rain caused moving to alternate location where the car was outdoors and screen indoors and safety video, registration and refreshments in yet another room. The previous time we had this everything was under one roof, waiting participants had a better view of the driverscreen interaction and the equipment had no problems. This time we had a 40-minute delay which the presenters and our own IT folks blamed on sensitive equipement and moisture. Two presenters required cigarette breaks and returned smelling much like an exhaust pipe and detracted from a safety/health presentation. The dress of both presnters (stocking caps, hooded non-descript sweat shirts) detracted from a more professional appearance we had with our first booking of this event. It was made overly clear that payment was the primary concern from the numerous phone calls. We are a state agency, we are going nowhere, and have ever reneged on a debt. More attention to the customer service aspect and a little more trust with the finances would be much more appealing. You have a quality program but unless these issues are resolved, I will be hesitant to have PEERS return. And I AM the decision maker for that.

The sixth annual Campus Activities Magazine Rock N’ Road Show, thanks to Quinnipiac University and Coleman Productions, was a smashing success.

It was summer 2011 and we, the editorial staff of CampusActMag, weren’t really all that surprised when we selected the winner of the Rock N’ Road Show as Quinnipiac University, considering program advisor Steve Pagios had just

moved over from The University of Akron, where in 2010 he provided enough Artist Report Cards for that campus to win the 2010 Rock N’ Road Show. WEDNESDAY, JAN. 25 10 AM The drive was long and cold, wind and rain whipping at your face every time the car door opens. A cool grey mist hung over the mostly rainy drive up from South Carolina, but after 16

hours on the road, broken by a motel night in rural Virginia, we were happy to be in Connecticut, where the campus was gorgeous.

QU has an interesting structure, with three neighboring satellite campuses within a few minutes of each other. “The 6,000 undergrads and 2,000 grad students are divided among those. Most students are residents, with freshmen and sophomores living on the main Mt. www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

Carmel campus and the juniors and seniors concentrated on the York Hill campus,” Steve says. “There are a fair amount of seniors who live off campus, but for the rest a good portion of students live on campus. The student bodies that handle activities are divided too; for the purposes of this article we’ll be referring to them mostly as one, but there is a distinction between QU After Dark, which handles most late night programming and the QU Student Programming Board, which puts on most other events. The campus averages 1520 live events per semester, so there’s something going on most weekends.

Any way you cut it, the campus has topnotch programs, from campus market staples from educational performers to major concerts. We sincerely thank them for providing us such a high Artist Report Card return rate and hope the weekend of free entertainment expressed that sentiment. Thanks of course to Coleman Productions and David Coleman, Marc Elliot, 61Syx Teknique, Mark Kroos and Bucket Boys for donating their time and talents as well.

FRIDAY, JAN. 26 8PM Marc Elliot burst on to the campus activities scene just a couple short years ago in 2010 and has already become one of the most sought after diversity performers in the market. Spreading a message of “Live and Let Live,” Marc has gone through life with other people judging him. He was born with Hirschsprung’s Disease, a condition which left him missing much of his intestines and looking forward to a lifetime of enough bathroom visits per day to reach double digits. As if that weren’t enough to contend with, as a young boy he began having volatile symptoms and was eventually diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome. The stares, head shakes, comments and judgement he received from people who had absolutely no idea of his personal struggle when he would gnash his teeth, spout obscenities or have other “tics” led him to take action. After being kicked off a bus in St. Louis for using an involuntary racial epithet, Marc decided to speak; to try to educate people not only on his own personal situation, but to truly make people stop and think before they judge anyone without all the facts.

The message and his delivery have been wellreceived; so much so that Marc, after just a little more than a year in the market, was able to sweep the 2011 CAM Reader’s Choice Awards for his categories, picking up wins for not only Diversity Artist of the Year but the coveted Speaker of the Year Award as well. “It has been an incredible journey so far,” he says. “Every time I get on stage, I have to do a gut check to remind myself of how such a rigorous and sometimes seemingly hopeless journey has led me to this place where I cannot only love my work, but share my message and feel as if I am www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

contributing to the greater good. I mean, I am a speaker on compassion, tolerance and diversity, and I am a white 27 year old male. If you saw me on the street, you wouldn’t think for a second that I would have any special experience relating to any of those topics. But, that’s exactly my message. You never know if the guy who cut you off in traffic just lost his job, the jerk in the grocery store line could have just lost a child. Live and Let Live, and never assume you won’t be the next misunderstood person coming down the block.”

FRIDAY, JAN. 27TH 8PM What can we say (or need to) about David Coleman? Unless you’re brand-spankin’ new to the activities world as a whole (which is fine, calm down and read every issue of CAM you can find), you have seen The Dating Doctor live, or at least heard from someone who has.

He is the FIRST AND ONLY speaker to ever win Entertainer of The Year, a title he held just

last year in 2011. How did he do it? Because David’s show is so much more than just a lecture. It’s an interactive walk through the topics of dating, relationships, and sex and David has spent the last 20 years learning, updating and streamlining his interactive multimedia show for students. He’s spent large amounts of time learning the science, changing opinions and generational shifts that affect all of our relationships. There is so much information in David’s 90minute lecture (which can often span well over two hours with Q&A, and he can do multiple shows without any overlap) that we couldn’t possibly scratch the surface here, but his opening tidbit is a great metaphorical example of just how good the information in his show is, and how relatable it is to students. “I tell students, and this applies to everyone but is especially apt advice for new freshman in a completely alien environment, ‘if you want to meet someone special (what I call your ‘hmmmD.’ be-

cause that’s the sound you make in your head when you see them), you have to be a fat penguin, because they always break the ice.’ As we all know, that is the number one toughest hurdle to cross in meeting people and forming

new relationships. So, once you understand your job is to be the fat penguin, then we start to discuss introductions, pickup lines and other ways to form new relationships.” Of course, if you want to know more, you’ll just have to see

FRIDAY, JAN. 27TH 10PM Bucket Boys followed up David’s performance with a wonderfully rousing and raucous display of percussionistic hedonism. And, the best part is they don’t even bring most of the junk with them. Signs, trash cans, lids, highway water buckets...it’s all fair game to Vince Romanelli and Mitch Martin, two high school friends that decided to enter a talent show and made the rest history. “David and Brooke found us about four years ago and we have been working with Coleman Productions ever since,” Vince says. “I feel like I can honestly say it was a trial run. One day she saw our act just when they had been thinking of opening an entertainment division of Coleman Productions.” “We were just doing our own thing at the time,” Mitch replies. “We had a few scattered college dates just based on word-of-mouth bookings.” Vince adds, “We had been doing the show for nine years by the time Coleman Productions contacted us, but had no idea this nebulous little market existed amongst activities boards.” The Bucket Boys play exotic cruises, corporate dates, special events, theaters, fairs, festivals and any number of other miscellaneous and sundry dates they can find but, they say by far their favorite are campus shows. Mitch elaborates by saying “We are 30 years old, we went to college...we’re not that far outside of their spheres. We connect with them – it was only six years ago that we were in college ourselves and it is so much fun to connect with them and be a little rowdy.”

MARK KROOS

SATURDAY, JAN 28TH 8PM Mark Kroos is a guitar virtuoso that, instead of wowing crowds with dazzling displays on just one guitar neck, uses two. Mark plays a variety of acoustic, electric and vocal songs that amaze the audience in their intricacy. He talked with the audience, maintain an almost constant patter between songs. The songs themselves possessed an intricacy not commonly seen; if our description of Mark doesn’t wow you with his credentials try this; Mark was named by Guitar Player Magazine as the winner of their 2011 International Guitar Superstar Competition. “Rather than telling new people, ‘I'm really good at guitar, you should book me," I can say ‘Guitar Player Magazine says I'm their pick for BEST at guitar (laughs).’”

SATURDAY, JAN 28TH 10PM 61Syx Teknique rocked the house, not only with an impressive display of breaking, but with a much more involved and in-depth show than one would expect from a dance crew.

Keegan “Seoul” Loye is the voice of 61Syx Teknique and though the entire crew can be scaled as big as you want, five guys made the trip from Grand Rapids to Quinnipiac. The thing that separates this show from the small segments of BBoy you’ve seen on TV is the good ole’ B&D, breadth and depth. There’s history on dance, BBoy and the hip hop culture that is so inextricably intertwined with it. “One of the most important aspects for us is having a firm and fundamental understanding of everything we do,” Keegan says. “Technique is such a highlight, it’s in the name and no matter whether you are talking about top rock, drops, footwork, freezes, or power moves, your exact form and technique along each step is the only way to excel. We teach not only some of these moves to students, but

how the history of breaking evolved and how we all stand on the shoulders of giants. Like all art, the next big move was always inspired in some way by the one before it, so we pay homage to all the time periods and groups that had an impact on break dancing.

The group’s show includes not only an interactive portion where students can get down on the floor and learn the moves with 61Syx, but also a medley of songs and dances that takes the audience along a live dance-a-thon from Soul Train through the South Bronx in the 80’s into today’s icons of modern dance like Usher and Jabbawockeez. In case you were wondering, the 61Syx part of the name represents their home town area code in Grand Rapids.

Overall, the shows were great, the students had tons of energy, QU treated all of us like royalty and we want to issue a special thanks to QUSPB and QUAD. You guys know who you are. Thanks so much for all the hospitality, it rivals that of any campus we’ve visited. SUNDAY, JAN 29TH 8AM We took it easy on the way home, heading back in through Manhattan, actually making a pit stop

at Marc Elliot’s apartment in Chelsea. He was on his way out, but was gracious enough to give us a place to park and a bathroom to use upon arrival and before we left the city, no small favor if you’ve ever experienced NYC.

Marc took us down to the High Line Park, a 1.45 mile walkway built on an elevated railway structure. Once we parted ways with Marc, we hoofed it up 8th Ave to West 43rd for a slice at Famiglia Pizza. We cut back over to the square, walking up on 7th to West 47th for a brief picture stop at the observational platform in Duffy Square before we headed back to Chelsea. Through the Holland Tunnel we went (once we drove in a circle around the entrance) and beat it back to the hills of Appalachia, stopping again at a small hotel along a remote stretch of I-81 in Northwestern Virginia. Returning home to the piedmont of South Carolina in January made us appreciate our weather, but not as much as we appreciated the experience of the 2012 Rock N’ Road Show.

THE TRIP BACK HOME TO THE CAMPUS MARKET

Listening to Eric Hutchinson just...makes you feel all right. His current single “Watching You Watch Him” has amassed nearly 400,000 hits on YouTube, is Top 10 at Triple A and Top 20 at Hot AC radio. The video is in rotation on VH1 and he has already performed the single on Leno, Letterman and Conan. The song was iTunes “Single of The Week” for April 17, 2012, and was used to open the premiere of this season of ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy.” bitly.com/watchingyouwatchhim Billboard says "It's pretty much impossible to get through singer/songwriter Eric Hutchinson's new single, 'Watching You Watch Him,' without some sort of toe-tapping or head-bobbing action. The most popular comment on the YouTube page for “Watching You Watch Him” - “I love this...he’s a male version of Colbie Caillat,” and per-

haps that’s not a description far off the mark, especially when one compares the similarity in emotional atmosphere absorbed by both artists’ music.

He’s definitely mellow, mainstream and the type of artist that, like a Jason Mraz or James Morrison (interestingly enough Martin Terefe, a producer on Eric’s album has also worked with both of these artists), has a unique ability to cross over more demographic lines that just about any other type of artist, perhaps even those in mainstream country. Another comment on the YouTube page personifies this. One user, upon seeing the like/dislike ratings for the song responded “16 people hate good music.” 2,209 people have liked the video.

It’s no surprise then that Eric has been a college market veteran for a while, finding a great home here, due to the combination of his wide appeal and the campus audiences’ open-minded and voracious appetite for fresh and quality new music. “I stumbled on to it kind of early,” he says. “I was lucky and got set up with Scott Talarico at Neon Entertainment as a college booking agent and found out about the NACA world. It was a huge blessing, the campus market was what allowed me to quit my day job really early on, before I was scraping by on only clubs. With colleges, I was able to book my own tours, which gave me a great way to get started out and get a fan base going.”

First attending a NACA regional conference, Eric was immediately taken with the intimacy of the experience and the market in general. “It has been a few years now, but I remember my first NACA showcase was at Mid-Atlantic and it was so much fun.

fun. The kids are all excited and in a great mood and it is a blast. It’s like one huge summer vacation or sleep away camp or something. As a musician it’s fun to walk in there for a day and tap into that energy and meet so many people. I got to meet students and some other great artists. I even met Mr Belding from “Saved By The Bell” one year, so that was pretty great (laughs). There have been several regional and a couple of national conferences and I have really enjoyed them. I especially enjoyed that moment just after the performance going to the marketplace, getting to meet all the enthusiastic students, signing their stuff and taking pictures. Even outside the bubble of the “campus market,” Eric’s performances in clubs and theaters still trend toward audiences on the younger end of the live show attending demographic. “It is definitely a little bit of a wider base, but it’s still a young audience. I always say I make music for anyone, I don’t really think of a certain type of person when I am writing. It is coming from the heart and something I can really feel deep down inside when I am playing it. It is a very youthful, energetic show, so I think that tends to get younger people excited, who want to dance and sing and take part in a very interactive show.” http://bit.ly/ericlive He even crafted his album in that spirit. “I traveled so long and got to see so many people and places,” he says. “And sharing music with the fans every night got me thinking: The best concerts are when people sing along with me. So for the next one, what kind of songs do I want people singing with me? What kind of songs do I want people dancing to?”

Eric is not a behind-the-piano deadpan. “Oh man,” he chuckles, “hardly. I smile and laugh, dance around, talk to the audience, jump up and down, bring people on stage, go into the crowd...it is just about having a really great time for everyone and college students are really great at lighting that spark.”

credibly difficult for a school to put on a major concert that more than any 7% of the student population cares about. The automatic go-to seems to be country, but there are a whole lot of folks out there who just aren’t that fond of the genre, and realizing an artist like Eric can straddle the fence between country and rock enthusiasts and bring in both sides of the coin (not to mention those along the edge) can be an epiphany. Any school who has spent five figures on a show that plays to half a house knows what I mean.

Listening through his album, “Moving Up Living Down,” one can hear a multitude of styles, genres and periods in Eric’s influences. When I listen to it at least, I am again struck by the cyclical nature of our cultural tastes and creative arts. I hear traces from much of our global musical history, with flavors of rock, country, bluegrass, Latin, reggae and more blended into an incredibly smooth and listenable package. I again highlight to Eric how much this must widen his base. “Definitely. You know, I love all kinds of music and I think all of those different elements come out in both the studio

and on stage. There is a really great variety of people that come out and see the shows and we have a blast. There is definitely something satisfying about not having a homogenous fan base (laughs).”

Moving Up Living Down debuted at #29 on Billboard's Top 200 Album chart and #13 on the Digital album chart and Eric’s tour has sold out in NY (2x), LA (2x), San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Philly, DC, Minneapolis, Denver, Detroit, Madison, Columbus, Austin, Des Moines, Omaha, Nashville Charleston, Phoenix, San Juan Capistrano and Seattle. Originally from the D.C. area, Eric can truly claim a national following. “I grew up in the Washington, D.C. area and then went to college at Emerson in Boston. After college I moved back home for a bit and then did a little stint in L.A., but I was mainly working out of D.C. and playing the East coast a lot. I think I have probably played every college there is in Pennsylvania (laughs).” No small feat.

After the success of Eric’s first record, which yielded three hit singles, he moved to New York, where he has lived for the past five years. “Working on this album was great. It is very much about transition...those years once you’re out of school and you’re trying to figure out what to do, find some direction and your place as a young adult. While I was writing it, we got to play a bunch of college shows, so it was great to be able to be connected to that world and not only be inspired by it, but test many of the new songs out along the way. That was a great sounding board to see what songs were working.” http://bit.ly/ericsfavoritevids Many artists use the campus market as a barometer for their material; it’s an audience that, while enthusiastic, can also be brutally honest and are always on the vanguard. “Definitely. They have their finger on the pulse a little bit more than maybe most other audiences. They know what is cool and they know what’s hip. And, they will be honest, man. If you play a song they don’t like or lose their attention, they will walk out... it doesn’t mat-

ter who you are, and just come back later. It’s a very strong tool that I really value when I am testing songs out.”

Every artist has to pay their dues, go through their struggles, fight off discouragement and starvation and very few of them get one big break, a golden ticket, a Bieber on Youtube sort of rifle shot into the public consciousness, if you will. No, for most artists, the journey is much slower and ever so much more grueling than an overnight success (no matter how much they may appear to be). “For me, I can’t really point to a single, specific moment that really sticks out. There have been many ups and downs. I’d made the first album and was already touring a bunch, but there was a point where Perez Hilton put my music on his website and that really gave me a huge platform and folks really started getting excited about it. The album kind of blew up overnight and jumped up on the iTunes charts really fast from that exposure. That was a huge moment that shined the light on my music and helped find an audience for it.”

Sometimes our world is full of unlikely heroes. “He [Perez] is a huge music lover and now a pop culture figure, and for whatever reason at that moment it just kind of happened. There has been a lot of work since then, but the good news is I love playing and I love writing, so it never really feels like work to me. Eric has been on his own multi-city sold out tour this summer, has made numerous late night appearances, played colleges,

private and special events and has even had time to share the stage with proven hit makers. “We have done a lot of opening act gigs for folks like Kelly Clarkson, OneRepublic, Jason Mraz, O.A.R. and more. It has been a really good mix and you know I want to do whatever it takes to get the music out there and keep reaching new listeners.”

When it comes to being flexible and accommodating nontraditional settings or circumstances with dates, you can be sure Eric will be a pain-free option. He’s no stranger to playing just about every type of date under the sun. “We do it all. I will go wherever there is an audience excited about the music. I bring the same energy to every show, whether it is for 50 people or 50,000. It’s all just a fun time and I don’t take it for granted, ever. It is a privilege to be able to do what I do every night and make a great living at it.” While “Watching You Watch Him” has been a breakout success for Eric so far, he describes a particular moment during the time the single “Rock & Roll” from his last album was being picked up by VH1. http://bit.ly/rockandrollvideo “One other significant ‘break’ moment I remember is, sitting in the San Diego airport and I got the call that VH1 had chosen me for an artist “You Oughta Know” and I was jumping up and down in the airport. It was like there was a stamp of approval from someone or something important, and they have continued to be very supportive since then.”

Moving Up Living Down just landed April 17, so speaking with Eric just a few short weeks later and in the midst of a national tour, he is still gaining perspective on the album’s impact. “We kicked off this tour the same night the album came out, which was a lot of fun. The crowds have been fantastic and have learned the songs right away, singing along at every show. I write all of my own music and I take much pride in that. In fact, it’s the number one thing I love doing; it’s why I got into this. Songwriting is something I started when I was eight years old and my grade school music teacher showed me how to write a song out on a chart. I was hooked. By the time I was in college I was making my own CDs and selling them out of my dorm room. It grew from there, but the writing is really what drives it all...and to hear fans at a sold out show singing songs from my new album back to me less than 24 hours after it’s release is the ultimate validation of the craft I love.” BOOK IT!
