Supreme Court Strikes Down Parts Of 2003 Defense of Marriage Act But America’s Youth Have “Higher” Priorities. I have to say I am a little surprised this issue gained so much momentum, especially getting considerable support from youths.

Over the last decade, the primary push by students 18-25 has been the legalization of marijuana. A movement that has also gained support from law enforcement, the medical community, entertainers and others. While both campaigns have had their sticking points, The marajuana issue seemed the most

likely to come up for approval and over the years, legalization has gained the support of many previously unlikely local, regional and national prominant people. The American legal system is being choked up with cases that involve possession and jails are housing violators making the facilities unable to contain more violent criminals. The result is that some districts have opted for early release of a myriad of offenders including more serious violators because states and the federal government can’t afford to keep them.

No matter what your feelings and beliefs are about “pot,” most people can find no reason not to legalize it, tax it and regulate it. Think about it, for 50+ years we have legalized tobacco, a product that has probably been responsible for the loss of far more addicted American lives, yet we have failed to control a drug that we know has massive appeal and use in all our communities and so far the medical community doesn’t see anything that could compare it to the addiction of tobacco. Like all controlled substances, it is likely that law enforcement will find abuses of the law. But prosecuting that number of cases will be monumentally less in number and cost than those that are currently clogging our court systems.

It Was Not An Oversight You Did Not Get A Microphone makes getting laughs look so easy they think they can do it too, or more often than not, they have just had way too much to drink. What they do not realize is that by opening their mouth they usually put themselves in a lose-lose situation. It is near impossible for them to win a battle of wits with a professional comedian, if for no other reason than they do not have a microphone, plus no one in the audience paid to hear them.

There is quite a bit of truth in Louie’s observation. Unfortunately, for some audience members, they feel compelled to verbally shove a comic off that cliff. They have a name for this type of person and it strikes fear in every comedian’s heart: Heckler. There seems to be two types of hecklers, the ones that think they are actually helping the comedian by providing a target for their jokes, and the ones that are just mean-spirited, trying to disrupt the show. Both are usually starved for attention. As Joe Rogan noted “The number one thing about hecklers is: one hundred percent are douchebags.”

There are a variety of reasons people heckle: they feel jealous their date’s attention is on someone else, or they resent a joke the comic made and want to voice their disapproval, or the professional comedian

Chances are this is the very first time they have been in a verbal exchange with a comic; very few people would want to do it more than once because of the repercussions of probable public humiliation, and possible ejection or even arrest. Comedians however, have been in these exchanges many times before and are battle-tested veterans fully armed with a stockpile of perfect lines to put the heckler in his place. I have amassed a list of responses to hecklers for you to enjoy. (Please note: these are just the ones that are suitable for publication, in a live show harsh X-rated replies are not unusual.) When a heckler hears the following they know the audience is not laughing with me, they are laughing at me.

• “I’m working here. Let’s be fair, I don’t go to McDonalds and tell you when the fries are done.” • “Were your parents first cousins?” • “See what happens when the fetus doesn’t get enough oxygen.” • “Your mother should have swallowed.” • “Did you come here on the short bus?” • “I’m sorry but I don’t speak Drunkanese.” • “Cross your legs lady, there’s an echo in here.” • “Rest your mouth lady; you might meet a rich sailor after the show.”

With verbal ammunition like that the heckler usually gets shot down, however, once in a blue moon, the heckler comes out on top. Billy Gardell, star of the show Mike and Molly, once had a seventy-year old woman stand up in his show and say, “They want you outside!” He said, “Who?” She said, “The people inside!”

One of my most embarrassing moments on stage happened after a heckler said something hilarious, so to acknowledge it I said, “Folks, that was funny, give him a hand.” Then the guy held up his stump. He had no hand. Everyone was mortified (but none more than me). The best heckle I ever heard of involved the late Eric Douglas, son of Kurt Douglas and brother of Michael Douglas. By all accounts Eric was not a very good person (drug and alcohol problems plus numerous arrests) and an even worse comedian, but he was able to parlay his famous relations to secure bookings. At a show in London he became angry at his inability to get laughs and snapped at the audience, “You can’t do this to me, I’m Kurt Douglas’ son!” A guy in the middle of the room stood up, raised his arm and shouted “No, I’m Kurt Douglas’ son!” Then a man on the other side of the room did the same, until the entire audience followed suit reenacting the famous scene from his father’s movie Spartacus. Brilliant!

I’ll close with the best heckle I ever personally witnessed, which involved a dear friend, so I’ll withhold his name. We were working a comedy club that was struggling to stay in business. It was Easter weekend and only a dozen people showed up for the Friday show. They all sat in the back and did not laugh at anything. My pal joked “It is Good Friday and I’m dying up here. Now I know how Jesus felt.” From the back of the room came “But Jesus will be back.” Spanky has been described by the press as a “campus entertainment icon.” He offers two great events at one great low price, and has been voted “Campus Comic of the Year” (LaffGuru.com) and the “Campus Performer of the Year” (TalkingAboutMyGeneration.com). Why Should Your School, Your Artist or Your Agency Be Involved In Artist Report Cards? Campus Activities Magazine® did not invent Artist Reports For The Campus Market. There are obviously other sources but we were the very first to refine the process.

Since 1992, Artist Reports have been part of the process for campuses, acts and agencies involved with Campus Activities Magazine’s® marketplace, but over the last five (5) years it has begun to be one of the focal points of this industry -so much in fact that other markets are looking at CAM’s format and considering adapting it. As early as 2005, the magazine began to promo the report card process by rewarding campuses with the lure of a free weekend of entertainment known as the Rock ‘n Road Show. As more and more acts and agencies became supportive of that model, so were more and more campuses.

Last year alone, we saw a 37% increase in participation for schools, some of which we have to attribute to the new way of reporting.

Historically, artists carried the reports with them or mailed them to campuses after the show requesting that they evaluate their experience. Schools could then either mail them or fax them to the magazine. For over a decade we used a system that was fraught with error because students filling out the form sometimes had no idea who the agency was that represented the act, some information was misspelled, other information was absent altogether. Then of course, is the problem with being able to interpret handwriting, not to mention barely readable faxes and forms that were mutilated by the USPO. On top of all this, the administrative time to formulate this information each issue into a readable for-

mat was mind boggling.

Step in Rodney Clay. Rodney spent last summer helping us with our website and making recommendations that would make it easier on everyone to accumulate and disseminate information.

A form was developed based on the old printed form that was entirely digital. Campuses could go in and complete the form easily in mere minutes and not have to worry about faxes, stamps or whether the form had been received. Once the report was submitted, they were given a confirmation. The information then went into a digital bank if you will, and we could retrieve it for every issue. Schools were amazed with how easy and simple this system was and it could be accessed from any computer, laptop, iPhone, iPod, Android or iPad. Artist could carry a laptop or iPad with them and have the director or student in charge complete the evaluation before the artist ever left campus. Or students could complete the form at their leisure anytime within 30 days after the show.

But as simple as all of this sounds, there were still a few hang-ups. Some students did not know the correct spellings of the name of the artist or their agencies. And for some, there was a problem with the name of their college or university. In the space listed for “title” we were getting answers like “Mr. or “Miss” instead of Director of Student Activities or President of the Campus Board. So Rodney stepped in again and developed drop-down menus. This means that if your school has ever submitted a report before, when you fill out the form, you will scroll down to your campus and it will automatically bring up the school and the location. If your school can not be found, you can con-

tinue to enter it with the location and the staff will verify your information and it will then be added to the drop-down menu.

The same goes for artists and agencies. If you enter “Adam Grabowski” you don’t have to worry about how to spell it. The genre of “comedy” automatically fills as the designated category and Auburn Moon automatically fills as the designated agency. You can rate Adam in any of seven categories and if one of them is not appropriate for your show, you can enter N/A and go on to the next. Lastly, you can either enter a comment about the show or not. Most schools feel they have something to say about the performer and the experience and complete a paragraph about their experience. You are currently not limited in the number of words permitted but as space become more of an issue there may be a limit to the length of the comment.

Why Should Your School Participate?

There are any number of exceptional reasons why you should, the best being is that your experience may help another campus in considering that act or even a similar act for their school.

The reason we have done so much work developing and refining this process is that it allows schools to make better decisions about who or what they bring to their campus. You can also see if a school you are familiar with had the act and write, call or email them for more information about their show. Acts are separated by genre (Comedy, Music, Variety, Novelty, Speakers, and Performing Arts). If you want to find a variety www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

artist, all the current acts are listed in alphabetical order and chronological order from the oldest to newest dates performed. You also have instant access to the agency. If the act is an advertiser with us, their latest ad and video can be accessed quickly from the sponsor section at the bottom of our home page. It’s all that simple. We have all seen acts that did amazingly well during a 15-minute showcase, but failed miserably to carry a show that was an hour or more. There is no reason why you should have to endure that catastrophe when information in the Artist Reports could have warned you in advance. Finally, the person submitting the report for an artist on your campus should have the responsibility of making a complete audience evaluation. The report process is not to give high marks to an artist that you genuinely like or have a crush on but how well they were received by the students that attended the show. Often times students are so enamored with an artist they will give them better marks (or sometimes worse), than they really deserve. You are not doing other campuses a favor by adjusting the grade of an act just because you are personally a fan. Not every act that comes to your campus deserves a perfect score just because of your personal feelings, nor do they deserve a less that favorable score because it is a show you are not excited about. Your audience reaction and the interaction between artist and the audience should be the key that drives your comments.

Why Should Your Artist or Agency Participate?

I once had an agent tell me he didn’t participate in artist reports because he didn’t want his competition to know who his clients were. If they found out, they would take his business asway from him. If properly used ARCs should be one of the most valuable tools an artist or agency can possibly have. This is a marketplace where directors and students talk on a regular basis about their experiences. I just wondered how poor an experience this guy was offering that he had to be so worried about losing a client. www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

ARCs are exposure for artist and agencies that cost you nothing. It enhances any promo and advertising that you do and lends credibility to your show.

Nobody is perfect and no show is perfect. Once in a while you may get a report that has lower marks than you would like, but it gives the school a chance to tell you what went wrong and it gives you the chance to contact that school and work out a way to make it right. If you look at many of the reports in this annual edition, some of the acts with higher scores will sometimes have a report that lowers their over-all grade. This is more important than you might realize because it opens the door to the agent or artist to create a dialog with the buyer and resolve a situation that might have otherwise gone unchecked. It may have just been an offnight; It may have been feeling ill or a situa-

Artists and agencies who understand the value of good promo, a good image, a good reputation, and regular exposure realize recognition of your business and the acts within your business generates growth. I am not sure how most of the agencies have developed their strategies, but I can tell you they understand that the artists they work with need to be as visible as possible and seen in the most positive light. But putting it on table gives you the chance to resolve this issue and possibly save a client.

I keep hearing “most of the artists and agents with the higher marks are advertisers.” Well, “Duh!” It doesn’t matter where or when an artist or agency advertises or with whom, this market, like most, is all about exposure.

The campus will be drawn from a list of the top five schools submitting the most artist reports for one campus year. Winning campus will agree to provide a facility with adequate production for reasonable riders plus housing and hospitality for the acts. Due to the projection needs of the show, it would have been useful to have the cues and a crew available at the show (or noted in the rider). Lastly, the agency had little prepared to assist in promoting the show as would be expected of an act of this magnitude and failed frequently to return calls, emails, or requests for information. He was cordial when I met him but once he was on the stage he became a little egotistical. There were times when he would repeatedly stop the show to hassle a single audience member for looking at their cell phone. Then he got onto a foreign student for being on the phone (but she wasn't speaking loudly nor did the phone cause interruption). I just thought it was annoying for him to make a big deal that detracted attention from his performance. Chris Ayer was a sweetheart throughout his time with us. This performance was confirmed but the wrong airline was still booked by Project Dynamite. They also lost their luggage, missing their make-up performance. The fortune teller was busy all night and it seemed like a big hit. The caricature artists, of course, were a big hit and there was a long line all night (even after midnight). Frank DeVille was amazing. He performed a teaser show earlier in the day and had at least 150-250 people in his show. Thank you for providing amazing entertainment. Miami University, Oxford, OH 10/10/12 200+ Outdoor and lecture/auditorium 5555--5 God In the Box is a documentary film created by Nathan Lang of Raindance productions (see godinthebox.com). It has been acclaimed at 5 film festivals. He gave us instructions to build our own box and set it up to film students going into the box to talk about their perspective on god. It is neither inherently religious nor secular. Like in his documentary, we made a short film for our clips to go with the showing of the documentary and discussion with the filmmaker. Nathan was great to work with and the program was AMAZING for our campus. Students, faculty and staff were all interested. In three days, we filmed 88 students; almost 100 attended the screening (and stayed for 2 hours!). It also generated a lot of informal discussion. It was all that we hoped it would be. Logistics include being able to construct the box and finding a student to make the film. The trailers on his website give a really good overview of what this program is about and the range of perspectives covered. We are a public institution and did not have concerns about promoting religion with this program. Again, Nathan was great to work with. Joey is a client that is easy to accommodate and it was amazing to watch him work in many settings e.g. group fitness, keynote, small group lifting, community building, student organization development, and nutrition seminars. You can mix and match his performances to meet your campus needs. The experience was a true value. Many campus departments had interest in cosponsoring this program and the feedback from our community was for Joey to come back next year. This performance would be perfect for educational institution, professional development, corporate, and for any other venue/audience who want to hear and feel transformative power of fitness. 1) It should have a dramatic effect on the number of street dealers which should give drug enforcement officials more man power to go after harder drugs suppliers.

2) Through government intervention, it almost eliminates marajuana laced with other dangerous substances that could cause injury or death, or chemicals that could enhance dependancy. It is not the position of this magazine to take a stand either pro or con on this issue, but to open up some debate that would allow students and college professionals the opportunity to be heard on both sides. Since this is bound to be a “hot” topic, especially in the entertainment industry, we would love to hear from you and find out your views. There are already programs dealing with this issue available in both lecture and debate forums, so possibly your campus might like to investigate those possibilities. Capital Cities is an act that makes it happen. For themselves, and their fans. They aren’t a group of passively assembled, paint-by-numbers members put together by a big label honcho trying to create the next big thing. They may be on a big label, but they prove that these days there is a lot more that a band can do for themselves than just sit around with fingers crossed hoping to get signed (like produce your own hit single and create huge buzz on the blogosphere). Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian make up the frontmen of the group, but it has other live band components that bring it to life and give CC its very distinctive sound. Broadly defined as an alt-dance group, Ryan sits down with Campus Activities Magazine to talk about where the group has come from, who they are and where they are headed.

The first thing he tells us is about the unique outlook this act has on the world, opting to follow the positive energy and turn away from the angst, gloom and doom of much of the modern day musicscape. “I think that in general both Sebu and I tend to be optimistic and positive people. When I say that, I am referring to our optimism in many different facets of life, one of them being hopeful about our music and our careers. I think we have always believed things would turn out well as long as we continued to put out a good product and work hard.”

Beyond perseverance and hard work though, a deeper sense of serenity emerges when one hears Ryan describe their view on the universe and all that’s in it. “I think we both have an outlook on the world that things are getting better. The average person’s life is better than it was

Ryan says this is not a view that either of the band’s primary two members arrived at immediately. “Perhaps it is a byproduct of our age, as we are a little bit older than your typical band when they land a hit single and a major record deal. I am 32 and Sabu is 34, so I think our world views have perhaps solidified a little more than younger bands. Whether that is a good thing or a bad one, who knows,” he laughs. All of this isn’t being brought up just because it sounds nice, it’s something that you can listen to as well. “I think that general outlook comes out in our music. Both of us have been in previous bands

before this and I think our music before Capital Cities tended to be a lot moodier and darker. I know I went through a particular phase where I was in a singer/songwriter period, writing lyrics that were very personal and introspective, and centered on the somewhat pessimistic things I would think about. With Capital Cities, we just approached things completely differently. We really wanted to create something that was fun; fun for us to perform, fun for the audience, and fun in the sense that is reflected our current state of mind.” Ages aside, perhaps that core sense of optimism is something that will translate extremely well into the college market, as students are hopefully looking forward to the future (and not yet jaded by crushing debt and a tough job market).

The pair met in 2008 and we won’t go as far as to say it was the pick of destiny, but there is an interesting bit of happenstance surrounding the encounter. Ryan was looking for help in producing a couple of songs he was working on himself. “I was between bands at the time and in Los Angeles a common place to look for musicians to collaborate with is Craigslist. It just so happened that Sabu put up a listing the day I was on there. This was the one and only time he had put up a listing on Craigslist, and apparently I was the first and only person to respond. We got together and started working on a couple of my songs, but it was very clear from early on that the two of us together had great writing chemistry.”

Ryan landed an opportunity to do some writing for TV commercials, and Sabu was his natural pick for a partner. “I asked Sabu

if he would like to join me and we did that for a couple of years. While we were working on these TV commercials though, we were constantly working on new music. We were doing five or six ads a week and were just in a very positive and creative mode, writing quickly and efficiently. We were in a very prolific period of writing and eventually we had a body of work that we felt was really strong and needed to be expressed in a band and in front of people.” Capital Cities was born. “It was very grass roots from the start,” Ryan says. “We put ‘Safe & Sound’ out on the Internet and things took off like a rocket from there.” Taking off means the song not only charted on Billboard’s U.S. Alternative Charts, it went to #1. One of the first things you will notice when listening to Capital Cities is their nontradi-

tional sound, meaning not the typical four piece rock band. This is a band that starts off with a unique electronic basis, but then builds upon it with the talent of live performers, with a dash of an instrument near and dear to the heart of the American music experience, but not often found in pop music these days. “When we first started, we actually were more of that traditional rock band, for about two shows,” Ryan says laughing. “We had live drums, bass, two guitars, keys, the works. Soon after though, we decided we needed to rethink what Capital Cities is and would be and how we would execute it live. This is before we produced the version of ‘Safe & Sound’ that is currently out right now.”

They decided first of all to take a different tack with percussion, which would have the unforeseen beneficial side effect of making their show much easier to travel, set up and break down. “First, we were still discovering our sound; eventually we started programming the songs using electronic beats and that brought a cleanliness and tightness to

the sound that we didn’t see working with live drums. It was pretty basic at first, just the beats and Sabu and I singing, with Nick our current guitar player as well. Over time we kept tinkering, deciding to add increasingly more live elements. Next came a bass player, then another guitar. That’s when we met Spencer Ludwig.”

Here we have that special spice that, apart from their unique vocals, let’s you know you’re hearing Capital Cities as soon as you hear them. “Spencer is an incredible trumpet player and we incorporated him initially because we had trumpet on ‘Safe & Sound.’ All of a sudden though, this instrument we don’t hear anymore outside of marching bands or inside of jazz clubs was shaping the sound of much of our music. It became the centerpiece for our live show and now pretty much every song of ours features a prominent trumpet part in it. It has become a signature piece for Capital Cities at our live performances. Spencer is a very dynamic

performer and it gives us a unique presence, audibly and visually.”

Now that the band has found a groove its comfortable in, they have even considered adding live percussion back in. “We are contemplating it, but right now this combination is really working well. It is very easy to control the sound, its easy to rehearse it and it is a lot more practical in many ways than having a more complex set up.” When we talk about this non traditional setup, we are talking about the ultimate bridge between the old (trumpet, jazz) and the new (beats, electronica), so the next obvious question is, what sort of demographics does this band see? With a mainstream appeal (avoiding the word “wholesome”) while still having a hip edge, Capital Cities can draw crowds of all ages. “We just played a show in Columbus, Ohio and it was a very interesting demographic. It was all ages, so there was everyone from groups of 7th grade girls to a dude who was there for

his 50th birthday...and everything in between from mid 30’s down through early 20’s. It is a wide demo that enjoys our music and I think it is because it is accessible. There are a lot of lyrical and melodic hooks that people can grab on to, but we also try really hard to make sure that it is not just about writing easy hooks. We want things to be familiar, yet interesting and that could be in the form of choosing certain bass notes or jazzier sounding harmonizations for a chord, Or having trumpet all over everything. We want it to be familiar but unique.” One aspect of this band’s live show that the college market will really enjoy is their love for playing cover songs. Now, this is not going to be your typical “Free Bird” “Take It Easy” “Enter Current Hit Pop Song Here” covers. These guys, just like with their sound, take an entirely unique approach to the cover songs they choose. “We started just because we thought it would be fun to cover some of our favorite songs, and partly to keep the promotion of the band

going and generating buzz online. But more than that, it is a really fun challenge to take a song that people are familiar with and then truly make it something new and different and our own. We first try to choose songs that many people will sort of know and recognize, but we try to stay away from the hits a lot of other bands cover. There is not an existing quintessential cover of any of the songs we do.”

Some of those choices include Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” (written by Prince) or Pink Floyd’s “Breathe.” One of the most interesting takes a MEGA hit from the disco era and turns it on its head. “We try to stay off the beaten path,” Ryan explains. “But we want to stay familiar. We dig into them from there and start to really mess with the chord progressions behind the melodies, because the songs in their original state have a set emotional impact, based on the way they were written and performed at the time. What we are able to do is create this new context, so even though it’s the same song, people

might look at it in a completely different way than the original. One example of that is our recent cover of the BeeGee’s ‘Stayin Alive’ which is this upbeat, kind of silly and frivolous sounding song in it’s original format, but actually has some pretty heavy content when you get into the lyrics. So, we slowed it down and gave it more weight and in our live show it has been received very well. We incorporate all of our covers in our live show, not only because it’s fun to play them, but also because it really does help get the crowd wound up. It’s something familiar to them and a very effective tool for engaging audiences.”

Capital Cities can come in and engage your audience as well, whether its a show just for your students or a major concert you open up to an all ages community. american commerce is built around innovation, promotion and public relations. the entertainment industry is not an exception. agencies and artists build their success on brand recognition and any artist seeking to become a household name in their sector of the industry understands that importance. if you are planning to build a career in this industry, there are certain steps you need to consider in order to move toward success. the very first lesson, no matter who you are or what you do is to invest in YourseLF. You are your number one commodity and failing to invest in yourself is a crucial mistake.

that being said, your account representative should be more than a sales person. they should review what you do, look at the competition and help you derive a plan that will build your image and your reputation. they should talk with you on a regular basis to feel out whether something needs to be changed to enhance the audience’s acceptance of your skills.

You should allow someone who has had experience in the market to design your ads. i know you think no one knows your act or agency better than you, but no one knows this market better than a design professional who deals with it all the time. teach that person about you and let them come up with ideas

that can best be your next home run. You are not selling “what-nots” for 25¢ each, so your ad should be designed with a concept that delivers You. develop something that is uniquely you that any buyer will recognize as being You immediately. don’t fill it up will 100 great things about yourself. Believe me, almost nobody cares. if your ad looks like a page from an encyclopedia or a page from Wikipedia, nobody will read it. You are throwing your money away.

i always tell my clients they should reserve a minimum each year from their annual gross income to invest in developing their brand. 15% is the magic number and that applies whether you are an artist or an agency.

What is comprised of developing your brand? each of these are extremely important and understand that you can’t simply throw money out there without doing a little work to make your efforts successful. 1) advertising. this one may seem simple but it needs some planning and forethought.

i know the next thing to come out of your mouth. “Kirby runs a magazine; of course he is going to promote his product.” But that is not necessarily true. You have to decide which publications can garner you the best exposure for your investment.

develop a campaign. one-shot ads are generally for close-out sales or to introduce something totally new. they don’t provide the reader with any continuity. even if you buy an annual contract, come up with several ads that have a connection to your brand and rotate them.

modify your expectations. since the internet has become so influential over the last ten years, most ads drive buyers to their web sites. Web sites help sell the “steak” after the ad tempts buyers with the “sizzle” but the down side is that fewer buyers will call when they can quickly get the information they need by being driven your web site. to help with those expectations, our magazine has developed a sponsor area at the bottom of our home page. every advertiser is considered a sponsor. When buyers click on that logo they are immediately taken to the latest ad that appeared in our recent publication. Below that ad are videos of artists appearing in that ad. then by clicking on the ad itself, the buyer is then taken directly to the advertiser’s website.

every print advertising contract includes this feature on our website as a bonus. 2) promo. this is where a lot of agencies and artists drop the ball. if you have received either a marginal grade or an unacceptable grade from a campus buyer in an arc, maybe it is time to look at revamping your promo. some performing arts providers as well as campus agencies took the easy way out last year by simply providing buyers with a pdf of promo rather than shipping printed materials. However, schools have found that printing these materials in such small quantities is extremely expensive (up to 10x higher per piece than a 5,000 item run), so most of these shows go on without any real promo. When audience turnout is low, it makes buyers re-think whether or not they will re-book that show. in actuality, agencies can provide campuses with 20 full color posters for each event and add the cost (around $25) to the cost of the show without the

printing is more affordable than it has ever been, but avoid internet suppliers if you can. most printers are extremely competitive and sometimes, speaking with someone who knows customer service can end up keeping you from making very expensive mistakes. We had a client who developed a mail piece of their own that was 20 pages. Because the internet printer gave them exactly what they submitted, they ended up with 10,000 brochures that the post office would not accept because they didn’t meet second class postal requirements for mail with an indicia. that would have never happened if this client had used a full service printer.

Low density, 100% cotton imported shirts can be a real bargain if they are going to carry a single color imprint, but the life expectancy of the product is not very long. if you plan to develop you own logo items and sell these during shows, you will probably want something far more durable. understand that dark color shirts with white or light colored prints may require a double hit or even a hit of white underneath the printed color to keep it from fading into the fabric.

And then something occurred to me that seemed to come from nowhere. In retrospect, this sudden insight must be embedded deep within our DNA, because I was only six and nobody had ever told it to me, so how else could I have known it? The insight that was revealed was the short list that people use while trying to rationalize a bad work situation: 1. “At least I’m getting paid well.”

This was true...relatively. I was six, and had never earned ANY money before, so five bucks represented a huge income spike for me. 2. “This is temporary.”

Yeah, it’s just what’s happening at the moment. It’s early in my career. Surely this will lead to better things. 3. “It beats poking in poop with a stick.”

This was a bit of down-home wisdom that my grandfather taught me. Meaning: as bad as things are, they can always be worse.

I got my first job at age 6, in what was surely a blatant violation of all child labor laws.

It wasn’t a “real” job, per se. I mean, I didn’t have my own office, parking space or expense account, nor any benefits to speak of. But it was certainly a “job,” as someone was paying me to do something.

When I was young, my father’s hobby was restoring old Chevy Corvairs, cars that had been discontinued years earlier because they were deemed unsafe. But, as with so many things that are dangerous, they also looked kinda cool, so my dad liked to collect them. I can still remember our family road trips: “OK, everybody hop into the most dangerous car ever made. Don’t bother looking for your seat belts, because

there aren’t any, and here are some pointy sticks for you kids to play with while you bounce around in the back seat.” But that’s another story. We’re here to talk about jobs, remember?

My dad bought one old Corvair that was in a particularly sad state, especially the engine. It was covered with a thick layer of grease and grime, and it desperately needed to be cleaned off. This, he realized, was where having kids would come in handy. But rather than just make me do this dirty work, my dad decided to “hire” me. He offered me $5 to scrape the smelly old engine free of all crud. My first job offer. No need for resume reworking or

This self-revealed advice forced me to persevere. Sorta. I scraped for about 10 minutes before announcing that this was not the job for me, and that I’m putting in for early retirement. Later that day I saw my dad out scraping the engine himself, apparently not satisfied with the mediocre job I’d done. Hey, some bosses just like to micromanage, right?

At some point in your life you may find yourself with your own version of my “engine scraping” job. Now, no job is perfect, and all of them will have aspects that you enjoy more than others, but some jobs are just not for you. And, believe it or not, you may not know this going in. Despite your education and your ambition and your extreme intelligence, you might accidentally end up in a job that just totally sucks. For a while, anyway. There was a valuable lesson to be learned from my first job. That is: if it’s truly not working for you, if it just feels wrong in your very core, you may do well to hand in your scraper and move

on to what’s next. And yes, even it it does pay five whole dollars. When it comes to finding your career path, quite often your missteps can be your most powerful teachers. Think of them as small exploratory steps forward as you make your way through new territory.
