Data For Dollars?
As we have become less and less reliant on the US Mail and have opted for email rather than a personal communication, some things have ended up not so rosy after-all.
I used to complain when I got several pieces of “junk” mail. For instance, an insurance company like State Farm or Nationwide who guaranteed me better rates, In fact I could save $441 over my current provider. Then there is the regular BiLo special sheet and coupons from Hardees. Okay, I always look at the specials from BiLo because they are only competition in my area is Walmart and I would swear that the meat at Walmart is so lousy and so tough and so expensive, that I am thrilled when BiLo runs a special. And I always use
the Hardees coupons from breakfast and lunch. But any insurance company could save me $441 on my car insurance they would be paying me to drive my car.
But I have learned to appreciate junk mail in my mail box because there is not that much of it any more. I still get offers for internet from HughesNet and I would cut off my arm before I got hooked back up with those leaches. Fortunately Frontier took over all the land lines in my area that Verizon had forgotten about a decade ago, upgraded them and offered us DSL and without any of the HughesNet restrictions and equipment for less than one third the price. That was a no brainer and now if I have a problem I get to speak to someone in the United States not a representative from

India who doesn’t understand English.
But the real reason for this rant is that, after experiencing all the technology of the last ten years, if you want to get my attention, you are going to have to mail me something if you want to have a chance. I have four company email addresses on my Mac and two personal email addresses. Each morning when I come in I have some 4,200 emails. Everyone says the simple solution is to highlight the ones you don’t know and send them to junk or spam. Okay that is a quick trick today, but tomorrow, they are right back there again. Plus there are probably 300 intermingled on my company accounts that are from people or companies I have never heard of. I move them to spam again but the next day they are back again. So I curse Olive Garden, Belk, Ebay, Cheap Printer Ink and
www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com
these hokey companies that offer discount business cards that start out at $10 and end up being $40. I am in the printing business so I can see what they offer is sub-standard and overpriced. But guess what, when I told them so, they accelerated their attack on me doubling the emails they had been sending and punishing me by making me take twice as long to get rid of their crap.
Then of course there are the usual suspects. I hear from Oprah about eight times every day and Dr. Oz and Bill Gates are regulars too. Plus try every kind possible medicine for hair loss, diabetes, sleep apnea, weight loss (thanks but no thanks Marie) and of course the attack of the boner pills.
Now I have never bought anything associated with Bill Gates and I am sure his name is used without his permission, but now I would never, ever buy anything remotely associated with his companies. And I will not read Oprah’s magazine, visit her website or watch any show she is associated with. Same for that freaky Doctor Oz. The fact of the matter is that rather than engage me they have enraged me and they are just getting the opposite effect. Hell would freeze over before I would ever do business with any of them and there are obviously hundreds more who are not named here. The problem with email is data mining. Your email account can be clean and manageable and then all of a sudden you do business with a firm or bank or other source that sells your information to someone else and no matter how many times you
www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com
take the hours necessary to ask for it to be removed, it either does not happen or you start getting emails from one of their online subsidiaries.
I now waste two hours each day getting rid of emails that have already been identified as spam. So in actuality, Direct Mail doesn’t really look that bad to me. If I get a piece that is intriguing, I will keep it and think about it, maybe even check the company out and sometimes give them a call. Back before email, the average response rate to a direct mailed piece was 2%. Now it is closer to 3%. So if I send out 1,000 pieces I can hope to get 30 new inquiries and if I can get half of those involved, that is worth the cost of the mailer plus you have a lot more room to promote your product . Most of the data mining, at least in my case, yields 0% and a pledge that I will never do business with them...ever. Take that Olive Garden!
We are very careful at CAM how we use your personal information. It is never sold, bartered or traded to any third party vendors.
Back when I first started this magazine, we found that we could make money like other providers in selling our lists to clients. But shortly after we made that decision, several letters from DSA’s encouraged us to stop and we halted the practice. First, we spent years developing the perfect mailing list for our magazine adding and deleting institutions based on how appropriate they were for campus activities. This was our research and our readers that we were sacrificing and it gave our property out to anyone with a few hundred dollars.
But that wasn’t the only reason. If we didn’t want our intellectual property prostituted. We did not want to betray the people who trusted us to deliver content in every issue or violate their rights. Our decision was simply a matter of trust and not dollars- A decision we have never regretted
So for the last fifteen years, subscription information, artist report card information retrieved when schools submit ARCs, polling information when a school nominates or votes, email addresses that will be used for or e-newsletters or special announcements... none of this has or will ever will be disclosed to outside sources. Thanks for the trust you put in us and know that if your email address is ever compromised, you can be assured it didn’t come from us. Be very careful about responding to any deal you find on the internet or any sign-up offers at merchants, banks and other vendors. There is no expectation of privacy associated with these offers and always request their privacy procedures. If you don’t, you could end up spending hours every day trying to weed out bogus deals or even outright fraud, just because you were not careful.

Austin. Don’t get me wrong, I still love NYC! I believe it is the best big city in the world, but...Austin is the best city. I should point out there is a big difference between living in Texas and living in Austin, a city that serves as an oasis of anti-redneck.
By Steven Kent McFarlin (AKA Spanky)
Awesome, TX 78704ever
Despite living in New York City for almost three decades I have never called it “home.” For me home was, and will forever be, Texas. A clear example of that unparalleled state pride ingrained in all Texans that people from 49 other states find so annoying. What other state has swimming pools shaped after them? (Colorado and Wyoming are shaped after swimming pools.) But the Lone Star State is not like any other, and even the Federal Government acknowledges that. Texas was granted special privileges when it joined the union that no other state has, because we were a Republic, with our own Navy and embassies in England and France. For example, we are the only state that can fly our flag the same height as the American flag, ours is the only Capital Building taller than our nation’s capital in DC, and Texas is the only state that has the right to divide up into five different states if we choose.
While Texans have an abundance of state pride, New Yorkers have an abundance of city pride, and rightfully so; I feel in love with the city the first time I saw it and moved there as fast as I could. However the quality of life in Manhattan took a nose dive when everyone started using handheld devices; those crowded sidewalks were hard enough to navigate when people were paying attention, but now that everyone is staring at their palm, well as they say there, “Fugetaboutit!” So I decided it was time for me to escape from New York (and the overpriced rentals - $4,500 a month for my one bedroom!) and return home to
The contrast in lifestyles has been startling! For example, my first morning to wake in Austin I thought “What is that noise outside my window?” It was a bird singing. New York City is the land that nature forgot. I once went to the Central Park Zoo and found a number of New Yorkers crowded around a cage. I made my way to the front, to discover they were all at the zoo, staring at… a cow. (I’ll admit I’ve never seen a cow with graffiti spray-painted on the side, said “Eat Me!”) In NYC I was awakened each morning by the “Lullaby of Broadway” which is played on sirens, car alarms, and clanging trash cans. The contrast in the attitude of the citizens is also remarkable. In Austin I hear words not used in New York, like “please” and “thank you.” In NYC the prevalent attitude is looking for something to bitch about and easily finding it, whereas people living in Austin look at each other with a smile and a wink, conveying an attitude of happiness we are in on a shared secret: a totally cool place to live (albeit the worst kept secret ever, with 150 people a day moving here!)
Surprisingly, I have run into more celebrities in Austin than I did in NYC or LA. Because the University of Texas is one of the Top 10 Film Schools in the country, many people in the entertainment industry have called Austin home. UT is where director Wes Anderson (Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom, Rushmore) met his future collaborator Owen Wilson, and they were later nominated for Oscars for The Royal Tannebaums. Other famous directors to learn their craft here include Richard Linklater (Boyhood, Dazed and Confused, Before Sunset trilogy), Robert Rodriguiz (Sin City, Grindhouse, Spy Kids), Tom Ford (A Single Man), and the cofounder of DreamWorks Animation, David Geffen. The film school also produced Oscar winning actors Matthew McConaughey, F. Murray Abraham, Renee Zellweger, and Marcia Gay Hardin. Other legendary alumni include Eli Wallach, Jayne Mansfield, Farrah Fawcett, Fess Parker (Davy Crockett), Jon Hamm (Don Draper on Mad Men), Perri Gilpen (Roz on Frazier), John Hillerman (Higgins on Magnum PI), and Allen Ludden (Password). Not to mention UT has produced more than its share of national newscasters, such as Walter Cronkite, Bill Moyers, Catherine Crier, and I think Brian Williams claims he went here too.
6, Campus aCtivities magazine®, april 2015
Other famous folks I’m proud to share a city with include Sandra Bullock, Ethan Hawke, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Drew Brees, Andy Roddick, and Michael Dell, who started Dell Computers in his UT dorm room. But enough name dropping. I have yet to mention the form of entertainment Austin is most famous for; it is renowned as the “Live Music Capital of the World!” You will notice it the second you arrive because there is usually a band playing in the airport. Just to make a point, think of all the live music venues in your town. How many did you come up with? 10? 20? Perhaps even 50? Well, Austin has 250! Every night of the week I can go hear great musicians play, more often than not, for free. Over 2,000 bands from around the world will descend on Austin this week for the South By Southwest Festival, along with 72,000 music fans. And SXSW is just one of many annual music festivals, others include: ACL, Fun Fun Fun Fest, Old Settlers Music Festival, Urban Music Festival, Euphoria Fest, Reggae Festival, Psyche Fest, and many others. This town never misses any excuse to celebrate music!
While most cities erect statues to honor local military heroes, Austin has statues of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Willie Nelson. The longest running music show in television history is Austin City Limits, and I attend the tapings with regularity. I also dine at the restaurant/music hall where Janis Joplin got her start.
The thing I love most about this town is its slogan: “Keep Austin Weird.” I am certainly trying to do my part! Google the following Austin oddities that I have thoroughly enjoyed: The Cathedral of Junk, Eeyore’s Birthday Party, Spamarama, and Carnaval Brasileiro, just to name a few. This town is a constant party! 6th Street has more liquor licenses than any street in the country, including Bourbon Street. Forbes magazine named Austin the “Drunkest City in America,” a title I thought Las Vegas would hold. So if you are looking for a good time, come see me. Just don’t tell anyone I told you. It’s a secret...

More Tips For Success!
In last month's column I shared tips for success that were provided by billionaires. As I stated, most of us will not attain that level of financial success but these tips can help you find notable success in your professional and ultimately your personal life. I felt that these remaining tips made it worth writing a two-part series.
Recognize the Value of Simple Ideas Many successful people have built their businesses on ideas that were quite simple. Think about things that we all like to do. Believe in the idea and simplify it to bring more value to profit. From there you can move forward to develop it.
Be Patiently Impatient Nothing happens overnight, it can take decades to become successful. While you should exercise patience for long-term goals, it is important to be diligent and attend to your short-term goals. Being nimble and having the ability to deliver faster than your competitors often makes the difference between success and failure.
Be Gritty Successful people are often described as tenacious and relentless. Don't let obstacles or failures interfere with achieving your goals. Learn from these experiences and keep moving forward. I never take no for an answer. There have been plenty of times when a door has been closed in my face, but I never gave up. Eventu-
ally I achieved my goal. While we often place an emphasis on having a stomach for failure, it is more important to have the strength to face what feels like an incredible amount of resistance and keep moving forward Develop Great Oratory Skills As a public speaker I can't emphasize this enough! If you can’t articulate your ideas and your vision in a compelling and succinct way, it
will be difficult; galvanize the support to make things happen. Think elevator pitch. You don't want to drag out your thoughts and put others to sleep. The challenge is saying more with fewer words. The more effectively you speak, the higher your chances are for career success.
Grow Thick, Armor-Plated Skin As you climb higher, you will encounter a greater number of detractors, and their attacks might be sharper. This is when you need to develop a layer of emotional resilience. It is easy to focus on the negative remarks that are coming your way - that's human nature! I have learned to block those voices and stay focused on the positive. Never let negative comments distract you from your goals. Don't invest energy in that poison, believe in yourself, and always know who you are.

Over-Communicate Your Message Speak often. Don’t make people guess or assume what you are thinking; make sure others understand your message precisely. Your format should be the same. Begin by telling people what you are going to tell them, then give them concise details, and then summarize what they just heard. In a noisy landscape, repetition is necessary.
Learn to Laugh at Yourself Having a sense of humor about things can make life a lot easier. There's scientific evidence that shows that being able to laugh at yourself may be a sign of an optimistic personality and it may even improve your mood. Humor has been identified as a possible factor in the development of personal resilience.
First Be Great at One Thing By focusing on one passion or strength, you can actually be more innovative. When you develop a deeper understanding by doing one thing, it opens up creative new ideas. Ironically, limiting yourself to one thing can lead to liberation. Value Integrity Those who value integrity strive to have a positive effect on people, and tend to find overall success in their professional and personal lives. Develop relationships with mentors who can provide wisdom and guidance for making tough decisions and solving problems. Most importantly, set high ethical standards for yourself and for your organization. People want to support and conduct business with others who are doing the right thing.

With appearances on “Magic Outlaws” For the Travel Channel and consulting for shows such as “Criss Angel: Mindfreak” and “The Mentalist” on CBS, Ben is building quite a reputation for himself as one of the best and brightest young names in magic. With his contemporary styling, unique and innovative effects and similarity in age to college students, he is a perfect fit for this market.
Perhaps Ben’s own succinct description of himself is the most apt. “I do magic tricks, sometimes on TV, but mostly in real life. That is the very quick elevator pitch. I tour performing a combination of standup comedy, sleight of hand and psychological manipulation with a little bit of pickpocketing.”
Ben has been performing since he was a kid. “I did my first gig when I was 12 and I was not very good, but I kept going. I have been involved in theater since I was a kid, performing all through high school and college, which was great experience for my current occupation.” Not many performers have the opportunity to study a major in college that so perfectly fits their chosen career path. Ben has clearly chosen the right one, as he continues to make a name for himself and amaze audiences across the campus market.

minds and connect with people in a way that most aren’t usually ready for.” Panama echoes, "The thing we do really well is we are able to is be ourselves and in that I think the audience realizes it’s ok to be themselves as well. It doesn’t matter if we are talking about nerdy stuff or political stuff or nostalgia; it is easy for people to connect with us because we are so comfortable when we get up there and do what we do.”
Panama Soweto and Ken Arkind have traveled all over the country for years as the Dynamic Duo, slam poets and activists who use their talent to change the world. Covering topics as diverse as video games, politics, depression, comic books, racism, and relationships, these two incredible poets weave together artistry and activism to create a one

Last year, Ken Arkind gave a Tedx talk on what happens when hip hop culture, young people, and poetry meet. This phenomenal speech explored issues of class, race, and the importance of creative outlets in the lives of young people. Along with Ken’s inspired talk last year, Panama Soweto has recently been selected to give a Tedx speech at Colorado State University. The talk will be entitled “Know Better, Do Better,” and is inspired by the life and work of Dr. Maya Angelou. Panama is excited and honored to be chosen as part of this wonderful event. The winner of the 2015 Best Music Artist goes to KaZual, a four man a cappella act that has exploded onto the college scene in the last couple of years. Mixing a great blend of classic hits going back to doo wop forward through the most contemporary hits, this is an act that can cater their show to suit nearly any audience. And with their ages being so close to the audiences they are entertaining in the campus market, they are a natural fit for this win. The lineup is actually made up of three brothers and a cousin, all of whom grew up singing together. Playboi, Lil Gabe, DMac and Ejae perform a show that consists of an hour of music that will appeal to just about any listener. “We give you a cappella, old school, new school and everything in between, as well as our original music.”
The group has the moves as well, able to execute the dance chops to make this a full scale production. They are personable and make sure that not only is their stage time the best it can be for their audiences, but their pre-show preparations and post-show follow up are top notch. “We try to make sure that everyone puts forward the effort to make sure every show is great and every client is happy,” Ejae says. “We guess it’s working, since the readers of this magazine were gracious enough to vote us as winners for this award.”C BOOKING INFO: CONTACT METROPOLIS MANAGEMENT & ENTERTAINMENT GROUP AT (877) 536-5374 OR jOYCE@METROPOLISMANAGEMENT.COM
Sex Signals is the many time award-winning show that has secured a commanding role in the position of sexual education programs in the campus market on the topics of consent, date rape, bystander behavior and the dating game. Performing thousands of shows all over the country for colleges and military personnel, this act was even featured on our cover last year, but amazingly this is the first time the program has won Speaker of The Year. The team from Catharsis Productions, the power behind the program, sits down to give us some quick details. “Sex Signals is a show that starts out talking about dating and gender role stereotypes and then uses humor to open a conversation about sexual assault and non stranger rape,” says Brea Hayes, Sex Signals Program Manager. “What we are doing with Sex Signals,” says Christian Murphy, Co-Owner and Executive Director of Catharsis Productions, “is inviting up to 400 students to have a conversation with us over the course of 75 minutes. It is a very engaging program that uses a lot of audience interaction and candid facilitated dialogue to discuss issues that need to be talked about, but that a lot of people are uncomfortable with.” This is an especially sensitive and timely program considering the White House’s Campus SaVE Act (Sexual Violence Elimination Act) which was passed just last year. “There is a new spotlight on campuses to be taking sexual assault and its reporting more seriously. This is an opportunity for students to really understand the issues of consent and bystander intervention, which is really the focus of our program now. Getting people to understand when it’s appropriate to say something and step up in scenarios where sexual violence could occur if they were to just stay out of it.”
Lot of valuable lessons are to be learned from Sex Signals, one of the most successful programs in the campus market for the last several years and the 2015 Reader’s Choice Award winner for Best Speaker of 2015. jessi Campbell is a standup comic originally from Tucson, Arizona, who got her career going in Minnesota and now lives in L.A. Certainly not the typical geographic route for a standup comic, but it seems to have worked out well for jessi, as she has a flourishing career in the campus market and has pulled down the 2015 Reader’s Choice Award for Best Female Performer. “I moved to Minnesota for my husband’s job and actually expanded my comedy career a lot when I moved to Arizona. Where I am from, in the Southwest, was kind of desolate for comedy clubs, then when I moved to the midwest they were all around me. There was much more available comedy, it was weird.”
The college market was one jessi wasn’t aware of at first, until she submitted a tape to her current agent, Chuck johnson of Summit Comedy, who thought she’d be a great fit for the market. Clearly he was right. Now eight years later, jessi stays busy working campuses. She entered the market with a bang. “My first showcase was incredible. I think I had all this nervous energy and just lit the room on fire and got tons of bookings and I thought ‘This is it!’ Then I got almost nothing for like two years (laughs). I got this amazing taste for it but then had to work really hard to get a consistent steady base of happy clients built in the market that have continued to keep me busy to this day.” jessi is pretty stoked about the award. “I am very excited and a little surprised actually. Not surprised because I don’t think I deserve it but I really
thought the other nominees were great acts and it makes me feel really good that I was the top choice this year. It makes me want to give everyone who voted for me a hug.”
Call Summit Comedy at (800) 947-0651 x 1 or melissa@summitcomedy.com to get your chance for that hug and a great show on campus for your students.
Eric Dittelman is a name who has gone from being recognizable in the campus market to recognizable as a national artist in a very short period of time. As a semifinalist on “America’s Got Talent” he amazed audiences nationwide and notably was invited for a guest appearance on “Ellen.” Home is where the heart is though, and Eric definitely feels at home the campus market. It’s a performance that works well on college campuses as one that involves a lot of audience participation, jawdropping effects and humor that’s delivered from someone in their age demographic.
“It’s an interactive mind-reading show that combines my background in improv and standup comedy, so it’s not one of those creepy, ‘in-your-head type’ shows; it’s more of an ‘let’s everyone have a good time and psych each other out a little bit’ show. “I do some of the favorite effects people ask for that they’ve seen me do on television, like duct taping my eyes shut and describing what someone is drawing without ever seeing it.” He reveals names of people, first crushes, halloween costumes they picked as kids, etc. “It’s a lot of fun for the audience, but I don’t claim to be psychic or supernatural. It’s more of a mix between magic and psychology.”
Eric has been performing in the campus market for about five years now, and this award is well-deserved. “I got my start in comedy clubs but realized I was developing my show for younger audiences. Marketing my show towards colleges was a natural transition. I got to start performing for audiences of my peers.” Eric Dittelman is very grateful to have been voted as 2015’s Best Male Performer and we think he’s worked his way into a rightful position as the title holder for this year. BOOKING INFO: Contact him at info@ericdittelman.com or (508) 284-5210.
The Fastest Rising Star category is one of the most exciting in the magazine because as we all know, the campus market is all about discovering new talent. Finding qualified nominees for this particular category is challenging. While there are always lots of new artists, most of them don’t seem to be able to really take hold of the market and secure a bright future in it. Mitch Clark is a perfect example of someone who has. Coming into the market in 2014, he has already done several successful showcases and has had a packed schedule for his first year, and is looking good to improve upon that for 2015. Mitch fits another criteria of a fast rising star, in that the span of his career has taken him to where he is now in a relatively short period of time compared to many entertainers who spend their entire lives being groomed for the stage. “I realized pretty late in college that I wanted to be an entertainer as a career. The thing that is a little different about my story is that I never picked up an instrument until I was in college. I was actually in college to study professional golf management. Then while I was there, the recruiter of the golf program got me into music. I went to Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC and he invited me to some FCA events. just hanging out he heard me singing along and said ‘Dude, I have to have you singing with me!’ I was like ‘Negative Ghost Rider, that’s not going to happen!’” he says laughing. “Prior to that, I had never sung in front of anyone or even tried to play music. “At the end of freshman year, he handed me his old guitar and told me to take it home and learn how to play. He said he heard something in my voice and thought I really should make the effort.”
Mitch dove in and got addicted. “I couldn’t put it down. I was still going through the golf thing, but by the end of my third internship at the ned of my junior year, I felt like I was wasting time. I knew music was what I really wanted to pursue. I dropped the golf program and finished my degree in business. As soon as I graduated I put all my efforts into figuring out how to play music for a living. That was just at the beginning of 2013.” BOOKING : Houla Entertainment at (865) 414-9266

Gabriel Iglesias is almost certainly no stranger to this audience. With a very consistent presence in television and film for the last several years, he truly has become a household name. It’s no surprise then that he’s been voted as the Reader’s Choice Awards winner for 2015’s Best Major Performer, and amid a very significant set of fellow nominees, including Mat Franco, who is not only coming off of an America’s Got Talent win, but is also solidly rooted in the campus market. But, Gabe seems to turn everything situation he’s in to his advantage somehow, coming out on top time after time throughout his career. The campus market is one that despite success on television, in film, internationally, in comedy clubs, corporations and anywhere else he wants to play, he continues to come back to time and time again. It just seems to be a good fit for him. “I think it’s because I try to be so relatable,” he says. “I think I am relevant enough in the college scene. I keep my show friendly and I keep it broad and because my fan base is primarily internet based, it makes sense to continue to perform primarily at colleges. Keep an eye out for Gabe on Comedy Central’s “Standup Revolution” and of course check out any of his “Fluffy” specials or movies. jonathan has been practicing magic since he was around twelve, but in college began taking his show to the next level, not only expanding his repertoire of tricks, but the audiences he did them for. “I went from doing kid’s birthday parties to performing for more jaded audiences on the street and eventually found the campus market. I do many unusual tricks with my body; fitting it inside or through things that people aren’t normally supposed to go inside of or through.” A couple of examples include toilet seats (clean) and tennis racquets. jonathan also prides himself on being a great impromptu performer, able to entertain audiences with objects that seem common and everyday to the rest of us but to a skilled eye and hand are much more. This sort of unusual skill has taken him to some pretty exciting heights, like having jay Leno call him “very impressive.”
The show even begins with a kick, having jonathan emerge from a suitcase situated on stage. “It’s a good way to start the show off with something unusual that maybe the audience tried to do as a kid but forgot about for a while. I use a lot of everyday objects to perform feats that aren’t usually associated with that object,” jonathan says. “I fit through a toilet seat, tennis racquets and folding chairs and even a picture frame. I do a little bit of juggling in the show, currently with a barbecue fork, an apple and a random object.” BOOKING INFO: CONTACT LAURA GILMAN AT FRESH VARIETY • (603) 518-5783 or laura@freshvariety.com.

Starting as a self-represented artist, Adam worked his way onto stages around the country and into the college market through clean, relatable humor and clever marketing. One of Adam’s signature pieces of promo is his 100% customizable slap bracelet. As a fun way to get the attention of students and increase attendance at shows, Adam writes random funny phrases on slap bracelets and gives them out to everyone. Imagine having someone attach the label “Sasshole” or “Awkward” or “#HotMess” on your wrist with a colorful slap bracelet out of nowhere... an interesting way to start a conversation to say the least! Students come back to the next event with the same excitement and enthusiasm that Adam left them with. If you want more people coming to your events, booking Adam is your best bet. Adam is back to representing himself simply because in his words, “Who better to represent me than me? ... Coordinating directly with advisors and activities board members is part of the fun. It makes all of us excited for when we get to hang out together. You’re always going to be more excited to see your friend when you talk to them directly than if their mom set up a playdate for you! haha.” Adam has performed in 44 States and at over 450 colleges to date. Stanford University is a prestigious and well known school for its research programs and for being one of the toughest undergraduate programs. Perhaps less well known about this institution is its programming schedule which is not only active, but very uniquely structured for the campus market. Combine this with an almost captive audience that is highly involved and you get a perfect choice for 2015’s Best Campus Program.
Located in the northern Silicon Valley in the Bay Area, near Palo Alto but the campus itself is fairly isolated in the entertainment area specific to students, of whom the majority of undergraduates reside on campus. Trista Shideler is the Assistant Director & Student Engagement Coordinator for the Office of Alcohol Policy & Education last Stanford, which is actually the department that handles the activities programming on campus. She tells us a little bit more about the unique programming environment that exists at the school. “We are in an interesting place, right down the street from Facebook and Google headquarters and many other tech sites. Our school has about 7,000 undergraduates and 9,000 graduate students so its kind of a unique population.” It’s the amount of students within walking distance that makes the programs here so potent. “About 90% of our undergraduates and 70% of graduate students live on campus, so we are a strong residential campus. This makes the programming on campus pretty important for our students. I am housed under the Office of Alcohol Policy and Education, not Student Activities. I know that’s different from a lot of campuses. We are housed under student life, but our department wasn’t established until 2011. Prior to 2011, we didn’t have Cardinal Nights, our official activities times, and there was no programming board. We have over 700 student organizations and they would do programming. This might sound like an incredible number, the only thing is many other institutions are used to being in college towns where there is the local bar right across the street, so the amount of programming done is less and attendance is harder to come by. Our campus however is over a mile to any sort of downtown area and freshman are not allowed to have a car. Everyone bikes around here and given that, a lot of the social hub is right on campus. We don’t have to compete with attractions off campus because the students tend to stay in this bubble.” Five years ago the conditions existed for Stanford to be this programmer’s delight, however one more piece needed to be set in place: a strong and unified programming body. “Prior to 2011, the student organizations would program, but it was usually during the week, during the day. They didn’t really program at night and they didn’t really program on the weekends because they didn’t want to compete with parties and things like that. We were established because it was deemed that there was a need to research alcohol use around campus and determine if there were ways for us to provide more safe, fun and healthy alternatives to partying and drinking.”
This is when Cardinal Night was established. “One of the things students specifically said was they wanted something that could compete with going to a party. So, we focus on premium programs. We try to find the very best talent in the campus market to entertain our students.”
There are still challenges, because like many campuses, the students are not a homogenous body. “Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. There are students that are legacies from successful families and there are low-income students on 100% financial aid. We have lots of international students. We have what we call the techies and the fuzzies. The techies are folks who are in computer science and technologies based fields, but then we have the fuzzies who study the humanities based, our gender studies, English, arts, etc. It is interesting because there is a very clear divide in our students and their tastes, but they all want to have fun and be social. For the longest time there wasn’t really anything without alcohol involved, so that was the impetus for the creation of our programming board.” Clearly Stanford has done something right, not only keeping their students happy, but being voted by artists and agents as the 2015 Best Campus Program Board. Degy Entertainment has become one of the most recognizable and reliable agencies serving the campus. Specializing in music and major concerts, they are a go-to agency not only for the best values in campus music, but also to help facilitate major talent buying for schools.
Ari Nisman and jeff Hyman are the two movers and shakers at Degy, and tell us a little bit about the agency that has been voted the 2015 National Agency of The Year. “I think most people in the campus market know us as the two outgoing guys that formed from two separate agencies and try and invite as many college buyers as we can to do business with us,” Ari says. “I think what is really special about our company and
what we are doing are the things that we don’t necessarily reveal. Some things we keep a little more guarded, specifically our work with the U.S. Military all over the world. Our work in other market sectors as well, such as high schools and middle schools and our work in the Canadian markets, and corporate work. We are also forging into some new areas that we will be announcing in the next couple of months. So, I would say that I like to ensure that not all of our eggs are in one basket because we know all the different sectors of the business have their ebbs and flows.”
This diversification ensures security for the agency, so that campus buyers know this isn’t a fair weather friend. “If there is sequestration with the govern-
ment, the military loses money to spend,” jeff adds. “If budgets are frozen or there’s a reduction of travel in the school markets, then there is less money to spend there. That can make companies that have too much of their business invested in any one place in a very precarious survival position. jeff and I have always been big proponents of diversification and it makes our agency much stronger.” This is clearly one of the strongest agencies in the market, evidenced by their longevity, not to mention this win for 2015’s National Agency of The Year. The Entertainer Of The Year title is always an all out battle amongst the very best talent picks in the campus market. This year was no different, as the vote went down to the wire, with the final tally a difference if just four votes.
FOUR seems to be a lucky number for this year’s winner, Magician Daniel Martin. Winning by four votes, this was also his fourth consecutive nomination for this award, proving not only that his fans in the campus market were truly determined to see him win, but also proving he has true staying power in the top tier of entertainers in the market. Not only is Daniel the top seat this year, he has continued to be the undisputed highest rated performer in our Artist Report Cards system for the last 2 years
running, and is looking very strong to make it a third. These are not biased editorials or PR pieces, these are real user reviews from programmers just like you. Check out our Artist Reports in almost every issue of this magazine for the proof, or especially our annual summer edition, which contains the entire previous school year’s ARCs all in one place.
“I am over the moon to be quite honest with you. I am very honored to have finally won it, truly I was honored just to be nominated with so many great entertainers. This was my fourth time up, so I’m no longer a bridesmaid. It was great.” There are droves of entertainers floating around using the title ‘comedy magician.’ Few of them can truly claim to be great at
both. Daniel certainly is, getting equal parts laughs and gasps per minute in his performance. Not only is his show hilarious and amazing, but his show is perfect for the campus market because just about every element of it involves the audience in some way. “When you see my show, you are getting an amazing infusion of a standup performer and a top shelf magician doing magic that you’ve never seen before. This is material that people have not only never seen in the college market, but no one else in the world is performing the effect that I am, because I have spent years crafting them myself.” Dan is such a prolific mind in magic that he’s actually got two completely different shows he can perform, so many schools have taken advantage of multiple appearances in a year. With a nearly 90% rebooking
rate, it’s little wonder he’s had to continue to innovate and produce new material to meet the return client demand. Daniel really focuses on maintaining a balance in his show that makes it as appealing to all elements of his audience possible. “It really is as funny as it is impressive and it kind of breaks the mold from the typical comedy magician because the audience is so much a part of it. They kind of come on a journey with me and are intimately involved in the success or failure of the illusions themselves. They are not the brunt of the jokes, but they provide the material. They help me make people disappear and turn invisible, read minds and generally have a
good time, all based around not me but their peers.” There’s also really cool and modern elements in the show, from using props students relate to like cell phones to multimedia and projection material that actually can change during the course of the show.”
The core of Daniel’s show is the audiences, augmented by a really fantastic performer. “I think a lot of performers fall into the trap of trying to build their personal character up to the point where the show is all about them. I want my show to be about the audience. I want them to remember how they felt. Years from now I don’t want them to say ‘I saw this really cool
30, Campus aCtivities magazine®, april 2015
magician one time.’ I want them to remember how they laughed and bonded with their peers with Daniel Martin. I want it to feel like a giant party on stage. If you had a friend who could do these amazing things and you could bring them along with you to a party, what would that feel like? That’s what I try to create every night on stage.” For more information about bringing the 2015 Reader’s Choice Award winner for Entertainer of The Year to your campus, contact Bass/Schuler Entertainment at (773) 481-2600 or info@bass-schuler.com.

5555555 Both the artist's and the agency's communication was speedy and friendly. The artist was a dream to work with due to punctuality, independence, and professionalism. The student body loved the show, and it was geared perfectly to the age group of the viewing audience. It would be an honor to work with The Crescent Circus again in the future, and I can't say enough positive things about this artist. John Davenport, Southern Miss Activiites Council Secretary

University of North Carolina at Asheville, Asheville, NC 02/18/15 249 Humanities Lecture Hall 5555554 Anthony and Sakina were incredible, and could not have been more perfect for what we intended. They asked such fitting questions prior to their performance ensuring the relevance and impact of their performance on our campus perceptions and climate. We've received positive feedback from administration and students across the board and are already discussing having these performers back! Bravo! Elliott Kimball, Assistant Director of Student Engagement University of Delaware, Newark, DE 03/21/15 130 trabant theater 5523-55 Artists were given a grade of "fair" for their relationship to their audience and a grade of "good" for their cooperation/attitude. This grade was given due to their somewhat dismissive attitude of the more in-depth and analytical questions that audience members asked. Some members of the audience felt that their questions were merely addressed rather than analyzed and answered and we feel that this does not provide a good environment for progressive conversation. Blue Hen Leadership Program, Program Assistant Vincennes University, Vincennes, IN 03/24/15 175 Green Activities Center 5555-55 This was a great asset to our sexual assault awareness campaign! University of Akron Main Campus, Akron, OH 02/11/15 226 Student Union Starbucks 5555555 Rudy Francisco blew our crowd away. He did a great job of relating his spoken word pieces to our student leaders and general student body, and was more than happy to answer any questions that students had for him. Plus, he stayed after and talked with many different people about his work and his inspiration. Overall, a wonderful performer to work with. A experience! Robbie Williford, Grad Assistant for RHPB
Arkansas State University-Main Campus, Jonesboro, AR 02/04/15 250 Auditorium 5555-55 Stacey has an extremely difficulty story to tell but she relates it wonderfully to college students. While the topic is heavy she inserts just enough humor to make the audience more comfortable hearing what she has experienced. She took time to not only tell her story but to connect how students seeking particular degrees should be aware of warning signs when working with kids. Natalie Eskew, Assistant Dean
