Letter from the President Dear Members, Planning for the 2024 SOC Awards is well underway and, on behalf of the Awards Committee and the SOC Board of Governors, I’m honored to tell you this will be a very special event. In light of the hardship brought on by the recent strikes, we had a very clear mission: honor this year’s work and lifetime achievers in a way that’s accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation. In light of what equipment vendors have been through we’re postponing the Tech Awards, focusing instead on new and creative ways to fund the event.

We’ve received amazing acts of kindness and support from around the industry, bringing us new allies and relationships exactly when we needed them. As a result, we will be dropping ticket prices significantly and, on February 24, 2024, we’ll be bringing hundreds of people together not only to celebrate our craft, but to remind us all of why we do what we do and to help continue the healing. Our Education Committee has remained as busy as ever staging our extremely popular Member Mix-Ups across the country. By the end of the year, we will have staged six of them, keeping us connected to our craft in New York, Atlanta and Los Angeles. And as everyone is able to return to work, expect us to stage intensive, hands-on, paid workshops once again. I cannot tell you how gratifying it has been to see my colleagues in SOC leadership—and our amazing staff—rise to the occasion during this difficult year. Their commitment has been unwavering and, on behalf of our entire membership, I give them my sincere thanks. Hang in there. We’re all in this together. Sincerely,

Meet the Crew Meet the Crew introduces you to the team that brings Camera Operator to life, like Kim Fischer, Studio Liaison & Clearances and Event Coordinator. What especially inspires you about your work with the SOC? I really can feel the true commitment that many more experienced members have in passing on their knowledge. They go out of their way to do this—in their free time—as part of leading SOC workshops and Member Mix-Ups. From my experience this is unique and goes a long way in building a positive and strong community of mutual support outside of the more traditional “on-the-job” environment. Taking time to provide these invaluable collaborative experiences to SOC members, in addition to their on-set mentoring opportunities, is very inspiring and helps to remind me to try to do the same.

What about your involvement in the SOC is the most gratifying for you? I really enjoy the chance to work with our prospective members—Student, Associate and Active. The genuine excitement and desire to be be part of SOC is a common theme. Assisting them through the process and then witnessing the pride that each and every one of them has in becoming part of the SOC community is very gratifying, and I am truly blessed to be a small part of their accomplishment. What is your special SOC moment? I have to say that it isn’t a specific moment, but the moments that we have to be together in person as group. I started my work with SOC during the pandemic and have worked mostly remotely since then. I have now had the privilege to be able to support SOC in planning and attending workshops in Atlanta and Las Vegas, this year’s SOC Awards ceremony, and recently Member Mix-Ups in New York and LA. It is very special to see everyone together, learning and enjoying themselves. I enjoy the chance to have in-person conversations with those I have only met via Zoom or email and to experience the positive energy generated and fun that everyone has when they can gather in person. What might surprise members about you?

I am a degreed Engineer, aka somewhat of a “nerd.” On top of that, I grew up with a mom who was and still is an absolute movie nut—especially the 60s musicals. I know way too many lyrics to songs, which actors were married to each other and who their children are, and actually remember—before they remastered it—that if I looked closely I could see the wire moving Bert Lahr’s tail in The Wizard of Oz! I have always been interested in “how did they do that?!!” when watching movies and TV. I now have an all new appreciation for the BTS work in the industry and am totally amazed at the skill and artistry that camera operators and crew bring to productions through being on the “front line” with the actors.

A film based on Barbie had been in various stages of development for more than a decade, but when it was announced that Greta Gerwig would be taking on the project hot on the heels of her tremendous work on 2019’s Little Women, it was clear that this was going to be something special. Now, three years later, Barbie has hit with the sort of seismic impact that can be likened only to that of the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs.

To create the colorful fantasy world of Barbieland, the bulk of the film was shot at Warner Bros Studios, Leavesden in the U.K., where Chris Bain worked as A Camera operator. Camera Operator was able to connect with Bain to ask him a few questions about what it was like working on such a unique film. In Barbieland, every day is perfect. Barbie is a doctor, an astronaut, a lawyer, the entire Supreme Court, and the President. Every day Barbie wakes up in her perfect Dreamhouse, puts on the perfect outfit, says hello to all of the other Barbies in her perfect neighborhood, has a blowout block party with perfect choreography, and ends the day with girls’ night. Oh, and Ken is there too. But one day Barbie’s existence as a flawless, immortal being is compromised when she starts having thoughts about death, finds that her feet have gone flat, and discovers she has developed cellulite. In order to restore order to her perfect life, she must journey to the real world to find the girl who plays with her. Oh, and Ken is there too. Barbie is directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach and stars Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrel. ...

But rather than gangsters or stock brokers, Killers of the Flower Moon turns its attention to ordinary people—cab drivers and undertakers and doctors— who are willing to commit, commission, and turn a blind eye towards horrifying acts of violence and cruelty motivated by greed and justified by dehumanizing racism. 12

From the experience of working with such an acclaimed filmmaker to the sobering emotion of recreating this dark chapter of our history alongside the very people whose lives it impacted. Based on the book by David Grann, Killers of the Flower Moon recounts the events surrounding the Osage murders of the 1920s. After oil was discovered on the Osage Reservation at the turn of the 20th century, members of the Osage Nation became some of the richest people in the United States, effectively overnight. And with that wealth came white Americans desperate to claim it as their own by any means necessary—up to and including murder. The film focuses primarily on Ernest Burkhart and his uncle, William King Hale, as the two of them scheme to take possession of a fortune from Ernest’s Osage wife, Mollie. Killers of the Flower Moon is directed by Martin Scorsese from a screenplay by Eric Roth and Scorsese. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, and Jesse Plemons. ...

Blue Beetle A Different Kind of Superhero Movie

Though various incarnations of the superhero Blue Beetle have appeared on comic book pages since 1939, the current version of the character is a somewhat recent addition to the DC Comics pantheon. Introduced in 2006, Jamie Reyes, the son of Mexican-American immigrants, became the third character to don the mantle of the Blue Beetle. His jump to the silver screen marks the first major superhero movie featuring a Latino lead.

Christopher T.J. McGuire, SOC, ACO, GBCT—A Camera and Steadicam operator on Blue Beetle—is no stranger to shooting on these kinds of blockbuster superhero films, having worked on films for DC, Marvel, and Sony. Camera Operator had the chance to chat with him about his work on the film and how its more intimate scale and focus on familial bonds made it distinct from the other comic book movies he’s worked on. Fresh out of college, Jaime Reyes returns to his hometown to find that his family is facing the threat of eviction from his childhood home. On the hunt for work to save his family’s home, a chance meeting lands him a job interview at mega-corporation Kord Industries, where the young heir of the Kord fortune uses Jaime to unwittingly help steal an alien artifact from Kord’s experimental weapons division. This artifact, known as the Scarab, ends up bonding with Jaime, transforming him into the superhero Blue Beetle. Now, on the run from Kord’s army of mercenaries, Jaime has to wrestle with both his newfound power as well as his sense of responsibility to his family. Blue Beetle is directed by Ángel Manuel Soto from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes alongside Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez. ...

Insight JOSHUA J. ARGUE, SOC What is your most memorable day in the industry? My most memorable day was every day that I got to film with Michele Willams (Destiny’s Child) on her short-lived series Chad Loves Michele on OWN. What a kind and beautiful soul! On one side of the business, cast/talent aren’t always the nicest. It was refreshing to work and collaborate with someone in her position that was in a vulnerable space and who was so down-to-earth.

What is the most important improvement you would like to see in our industry? I hate having to negotiate rates. I wish that production companies, studios, and networks would negotiate in good faith and pay people what they are worth, not what they think they can get away with. There are so many incredibly talented and hard-working individuals on hit shows that are barely making it and struggling to even keep healthcare. That shouldn’t be the case in a trillion-dollar industry. ERIN LYNCH, SOC I’ve been a camera operator for 23 years—full-time concert touring for 16 years with 10 or so years previous to that as a still photographer. What is your most memorable day in the industry? A single live shot with Eddie Vedder facing me to play the organ—a beautiful song, and very moving. Who has helped you most in your career? Lee Griffin for that first call. Smasher Desmedt, Matt Askem, Blue Leach, Richy Parkin, Bob Higgins, Peter Daniel, and Jake Berry for their magic, support, and inspiration. What is the most important improvement you would like to see in our industry? A more balanced gender and age dynamic on the tech side. RYAN TOUSSIENG, SOC What was one of your most challenging shots? In Season 3 of Manifest, we choreographed and designed an unplanned big handheld oner complete with stunts, squibs, SFX, and three hidden cuts in the span of about three hours. Incredibly tough but unbelievably rewarding. What is your most memorable day in the industry? When I was coming up and cutting my teeth as an operator for Saturday Night Live’s “Film Unit,” working with a new host every week was always exciting and you never knew who you were going to get! WHY THEY USE STEADICAM VOLT
Greg McGuinness Cam/Steadicam Op I pretty much use the Volt 100% of the time. Because of the way its set up, the rig performs better with it on. A better question might be when wouldn’t I use the Volt? I have had a comment where they ask to be ‘less smooth’ where in fact they wanted the handheld look for that shot.
Jess Doxey Cam/Steadicam Op When we shot the two Enola Holmes films the Steadicam was the main camera shooting the majority of the film — great fun but exhausting! Having the Volt there when you’re constantly trying to emulate dolly moves, slider moves well it was a terrific help.
Paul Edwards Cam/Steadicam Op The first time I used the Volt, I almost never looked at the monitor. It was just brilliantly adaptive to what we’ve all learned and now I can just sit there and think of composition and storytelling.

For anybody who has an eye for cinematography or composition, the number one complaint of Steadicam, is ‘these horizons angle a little bit.’ Great operators can really minimize it, but it can never totally go away. I tried the Volt, and Oh my God! Amazingly with one tiny little functionality difference—it’s fixed, it’s gone.
Geoffrey Haley, SOC One of my favourite tools the Volt has is sticky mode, which I use a lot. This enables me to run into a close up at a high speed and stop instantly without the Steadicam rocking from the pendulum effect, I am amazed by the result.

As a result, I’m thinking much more creatively of what I can do with the shot, the blocking, and the intentions of the DP and the story. By doing this, I am creating the most beautiful shot I can and immersing the viewer.
Brian Sergott, SOC On Willie Nelson’s 90th Birthday at the Hollywood Bowl, I was filming 8-10 minute takes walking the outside perimeter. I had to I had to be on a head to toe pushing into a cowboy on him all the way across and back while avoiding the security seated under my rig. Honestly, without the Volt it would’ve been miserable to try to just hold that shot and creep along.

Man I love it! The more I learn how the different settings can help me with different shots the more I love it. I was shooting beside Wicklow Head lighthouse last week in high winds. My grip was doing his best with the Sunbounce wind-killer whilst nearly being blown off his feet. I just ramped up the tilt and dampener - rock solid! The Volt is a great tool, it allows me to concentrate on composition, not to worry about horizon and be more creative.
