Society of Camera Operators
About the SOC The Society of Camera Operators began in 1979 as the Society of Operating Cameramen (SOC)—an organization dedicated to the advancement of the art and creative contributions of the camera operator in the motion picture and television industries. Thirteen camera operators banded together with the goal of advancing the position of the working camera operator in the motion picture and television industries. They drew up a Constitution & By-laws and the Society of Operating Cameramen was born. Having since changed its name to The Society of Camera Operators, the SOC continues to bring industry leaders and cinematic artists into close confederation. Society members are kept at the forefront of the industry’s ever-advancing technology through continuing workshops and corporate sponsored equipment showcases. Our Camera Operator quarterly magazine is noted for its significant contribution to the industry. Informative articles and interviews range from historical pieces to in-depth coverage of the most current technology.
Incorporated as a nonprofit charitable organization in 1981, the SOC dedicates its full support to The Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Annually, the SOC meets this challenge with proceeds from the Lifetime Achievement Awards. To further honor the talented men and women behind the camera, the first SOC Lifetime Achievement Awards took place in 1981. Since its start, over 100 golden Cammy statuettes have been awarded, along with over 30 Technical Achievement awards.
Our Mission The Society of Camera Operators (SOC) advances the art, craft, and creative contributions of the camera operator. The SOC is an internationally recognized professional honorary Society. The core activities of the Society are the annual SOC Awards, publishing the Society’s magazine Camera Operator, and our charitable commitment to The Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Vision is the most important sense that camera operators use in our daily work. As such, it bonds SOC members to children with vision problems.
We serve the SOC membership through our commitment to advancing the role of the camera operator by providing education, supporting the development of technology and production methods, and honoring the members who have served before us.

The Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles About The Vision Center The Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is an international referral center for children with complex eye diseases. It is one of the few centers in the country to offer expertise in virtually every pediatric ophthalmologic subspecialty. Board-certified pediatric ophthalmologists care for more than 15,000 patients and perform more than 1,500 ophthalmic surgeries each year, making The Vision Center one of the largest, most respected centers of its kind, treating nearly 20 percent of all retinoblastoma cases diagnosed annually in the United States. Among other innovations, physicians at The Vision Center use spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) to diagnose retinal detachment in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a potentially blinding eye disorder affecting premature infants, and were the first to combine SDOCT with the novel ocular endoscope to treat ROP. This device grants surgeons the ability to correct this potentially blinding disorder in premature infants.
About Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is a nonprofit pediatric health care organization dedicated to creating hope and building healthier futures for children. Selected as the premier children’s hospital in California and among the top five in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, we treat 107,000 young patients annually from Los Angeles and around the world. As a pediatric charity of choice, the hospital relies on the generosity of the community to support its groundbreaking pediatric research and the complex care it provides for critically ill and injured children.

Governors Lifetime Achievement Award Michael Keaton As the star of the 2015 Academy Award© Best Picture winner Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Innocence), Michael Keaton garnered critical and public acclaim for his role as Riggan, a one-time celebrated, now washed-up actor battling to regain his ego and career by mounting a Broadway play. For his work in Birdman, Keaton was nominated for an Academy Award © and won the Golden Globe, Independent Spirit and National Board of Review Awards for Best Actor as well as many other nominations and honors including a SAG Ensemble Cast win. Keaton first achieved national attention with the hit comedy Night Shift, followed by starring roles in such popular films as Mr. Mom, Johnny Dangerously and Dream Team. In 1988 Keaton earned the Best Actor Award from the National Society of Film Critics for Clean and Sober and for Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice. He re-teamed with Burton to play the title role in the blockbusters Batman and Batman Returns. Keaton also starred in HBO’s highly-regarded true-life drama Live From Baghdad for which he received a Golden Globe nomination for his role as intrepid CNN reporter Robert Weiner. He also starred in the Universal thriller White Noise and in Game Six, which premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. Most recently Keaton starred in the Academy Award © Best Picture winner Spotlight, the compelling true story of how The Boston Globe uncovered a massive scandal within the Catholic Church. He will next be seen in The Founder, in which he portrays Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald’s. Keaton is a member of American Rivers. Courtesy of Michael Keaton

Camera Operator Lifetime Achievement Award Garrett Brown, SOC My first love was operating – I called it ‘shooting’– on little commercials and early films for Sesame Street. We laboriously dollied and craned, though except for hand-held sweeps with my 5.7 Kinoptik, our moves were a bit arbitrary and stilted. But with my ACL on a fluid head, easing the long end of the zoom, drifting the plane of focus between objects and faces, I was supremely happy and fancied we looked as fine as anything in the movies. And when at last my feet, legs, and arms came into play, when I could finally walk, run, dart forward, dodge through a crowd smoothly, the lens at my fingertips, booming through space in French curves, it was purely intoxicating! Haskell and Conrad and John Avildson soon taught me to be bold, and Stanley taught me precision! I learned to watch that little green band-aid of an image as if in a theater audience before a 50-foot screen. How slow? How fast? Have we seen enough? For some months I surfed those possibilities alone, and soon thereafter, in company with our first great Steadicam generation–who took up our fledgling instrument and showed the movie world a brand new game–and three generations since, who continue to explore the geometry and psychology, the precise ‘wheres’ and ‘whens’ of one great moving shot after another.

Camera Technician Lifetime Achievement Award Bobby Mancuso I started my career at General Camera where I met my mentor Scott Fleischer and Sal Giarratano, one of my closest friends in the business. My first job was Bright Lights, Big City with the great Gordon Willis. Not bad for a first job! My next job was Big. I started as a camera trainee, but thanks to Jay Levy, moved up to 2nd AC. I went on to do seven movies with Michael & Florian Ballhaus, including Goodfellas. Not only was it a privilege to work with such a talented DP, it gave me the opportunity to form a lifelong friendship with Florian. While working on Sleepers, I received a call from Don Thorin Sr, whom I had worked with previously as a 2nd AC. Don was doing a job in New York called The First Wives Club and offered me the job as the A camera 1st AC. Don was a man who always stayed true to his word and always stood behind his crew. I went on to do two more movies with Don. He was a wonderful man, whom I will never forget. I have been very fortunate to work with many other great cinematographers including Allen Daviau, John Bailey, Emmanuel Lubezki, Andrew Lesnie, Vittorio Storaro, and currently Seamus McGarvey. I was lucky enough to see film as the dominant media and the birth of HD cameras. Technology is constantly changing and challenging us and I look forward to what the future brings.

Mobile Camera Platform Operator Lifetime Achievement Award Mike Moad My story is not your typical one. I didn’t grow up with visions of making films; I grew up in Nampa, Idaho, a small town of maybe 20,000. We would go to movies and get into the fantasy of the picture to escape our reality for a bit. Never did I realize how many people it took to make a film. In 1980, a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to be a P.A. on a film being shot around Boise. I thought I would do it for a story I could tell later, so I showed up for a couple of days work. Alan Blomquist was the key grip and he told me that he and the gaffer flipped a coin and he won. He was the one who taught me how to be a grip, hired me several more times and basically started my career. Soon after, I decided I wanted to be that guy pushing the dolly. I started asking the operators about what to do and they helped me. They were the ones that taught me how to do the job correctly and actually gave me a career. I believe I’ve worked on near 100 feature films. I would like to thank all the people I’ve worked with along the way. I think the biggest thanks goes to my wife, Catherine, and my daughters, Osana, Amaia, and Aisea. They are the ones that would give me a hug and a kiss and allow me to go out and do the job that I love.

Still Photographer Lifetime Achievement Award Phillip Caruso At age eight, Phillip Caruso served as a 16mm film projectionist in the family’s screening room. Phillip’s early creative curiosity was influenced by his father’s career as a cameraman, writer and documentary producer and extensive inventory of motion picture and still photographic equipment. Phillip started a production company with two partners in New Orleans, producing documentaries, industrials, and commercials. His work progressed to other studios as cameraman, production manager and director. Phillip joined Chicago’s IATSE Local 666, and simultaneously held membership in the Chicago, New York and Los Angeles locals as a still photographer. Currently, he serves as East Coast Still Photographers Representative of IATSE Local 600, on its National Executive Board. Phillip credits his work with Ron Howard during Imagine Entertainment’s early days, as a turning point. Through the collaboration, he met Robert DeNiro, later becoming his on-call photographer, which in turn led to an enduring relationship with Martin Scorsese. The DeNiro and Scorsese associations spanned ten years and 25 movies. During the early 1990’s, Phillip was a pioneer of digital photography use in the film industry. He tested state-of-the-art digital camera equipment from Nikon, Hasselblad, and Leica, and worked with studios in transitioning material to digital formats. Currently, Phillip’s work includes film and television projects for various studios, networks, and on-demand providers. Phillip’s creative journey landed opportunities to work with directors such as Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Barry Levinson, Robert Zemeckis, Terry Gilliam, and John Waters.

Technical Achievement Award SHOTOVER: K1-6 Axis Stabilizer Brad Hurndell began his career in the Royal NZ Air Force as an aircraft technician on the 75SQN strike force. With a strong desire to create and build, he applied the discipline learned in the military and followed his passion of engineering to Christchurch, NZ where he earned an Honors Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Canterbury University. Brad then applied his new skills as a product designer, working on a wide and diverse range of cutting edge products including water jet propulsions units, seethrough display technology, timber density testing technology, biosecurity threat detection tools, and transport systems. In 2009 Brad was approached to become SHOTOVER’s first employee, the goal being to design and manufacture a new range of world leading gyro-stabilized camera systems. Brad led the planning, specification, component selection, and 3D mechanical design of the SHOTOVER K1, using 3D CAD tools to design a new and exotic lightweight carbon fiber structure and world leading aesthetic. Seeing the K1 being used to create unique and previously unachievable shots revealed a new passion for designing tools for the film industry that “change the game”. Brad continues to lead development of all SHOTOVER products and in 2015 became SHOTOVER’s CEO, overseeing SHOTOVER’s worldwide operations. Brad has several patents, has won Red Dot awards, Best Design awards, and with SHOTOVER in 2015, was a finalist for NZ High Tech Company of the Year and in 2015 & 2016 a finalist for Best Technology Solution for the Creative Sector. SHOTOVER also won an IABM Design and Innovation Award in 2016. Brad Hurndell, photo courtesy of SHOTOVER

Technical Achievement Award That Cat: The Patented Silent Cat Camera Slider In 1975 Phil Saad watched a short-film by his brother-in-law Richard Dobbs, DGA and at 19 was hooked on becoming a filmmaker. Working for Dennis Switaj in New Haven, CT, Phil delved into learning all aspects of filmmaking. After traveling the US in 1978, he began his 36-year career in NYC as a key grip with NABET Local-15 and then IATSE Local-52. His mentors, Joe Babas and Talley Morse were consummate professionals and exceptional problem solvers. Phil worked with many DP’s and operators, but his lasting relationship with Robert Gantz, ASC was very loyal and collaborative. In 1998 Phil started That Cat Camera Support as an extension of his work as a grip and developed business relationships with J.L. Fisher and Chapman/Leonard. At that time, he prototyped three sliders for Table-Top and MOS shoots. They were crude and noisy but achieved new options when shooting. DP’s began requesting them for sound-shoots and although they didn’t mind the noise, sound men did. Phil realized the industry could truly benefit from this equipment only if they were quiet and designed with uniformity, utility, and safety. After two years of R&D, Silent Cat™ Camera Sliders were introduced in 2006. Phil’s son, Nick, joined him in 2010 helping That Cat become the top camera support company in NYC, and Silent Cat™ among the highest performing sliders used worldwide. They continue improving their products and manufacture 95% of the components. Silent Cat™ Camera Sliders are proudly made and sold throughout the USA and exported to 13 other countries.

Camera Operator of the Year - Feature Film Nominees Stephen Campanelli, SOC Sully
David Emmerichs, SOC Nocturnal Animals
Mark Goellnicht, SOC Hacksaw Ridge
Before it became an essential tool on nearly every set, Stephen Campanelli purchased a Steadicam. Being the first to combine A camera operating with Steadicam, Stephen quickly become one of the most sought after Steadicam operators in the country. Then, Stephen’s work piqued the interest of his boyhood idol: Clint Eastwood. First collaborating on the Oscar and Golden Globe nominated Bridges of Madison County, Stephen has remained Clint’s most trusted “camera eye” ever since. Nominated for Camera Operator of the Year three times, and winning in 2012, Stephen’s competence and depth of experience have led many of the directors he’s worked with to entrust him with crucial on-set directorial decisions. Now, Stephen has made the natural leap to director, having already helmed two films.
David started making animated films in his basement when he was 11. He went to NYU Film School to attend their animation program, but got sucked into the world of live action when he tried on a Steadicam at a trade show. Obsessed, he had his first rig before graduation and began working his way up through music videos and low budget movies. He then moved to Hollywood and began breaking into the world of big feature films, especially movies where lots of big things blow up. He joined the SOC in 1995 and has been working as an A camera and Steadicam operator ever since, having had the good fortune to work on films such as Seven, Armageddon, Nixon, Tomb Raider, The Green Mile, Catch Me if You Can, Transformers, Avatar, Real Steel, The Accountant, and Nocturnal Animals. He lives right under the Hollywood sign with his fantastic wife, Liz Vassey.
Mark Goellnicht’s fascination with cameras began at an early age. His passions growing up were photography and drama performance, which drove him to start a career in film as a camera assistant trainee in his hometown of Perth, Australia. His goal was to be operating behind the camera, and an opportunity presented itself in television where he worked for over ten years. Goellnicht continued his experience over the next 12 years, building his credits on U.S. movies shooting in Australia. In order to fulfill his dream of working alongside the world’s greatest filmmakers, he relocated to Los Angeles in 2009, continuing his career thanks to the support of some of the finest directors and cinematographers in the industry. Goellnicht’s most notable credits are: Mad Max: Fury Road, The Great Gatsby, Hacksaw Ridge, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers, In The Land Of Blood and Honey, Secretariat, and San Andreas.

Petr Hlinomaz, SOC Manchester By the Sea
Jacques Jouffret, SOC Deep Water Horizon
Ari Robbins, SOC La La Land
Petr Hlinomaz was born in Prague, Czech Republic, and trained at Barrandov Studios. His latest film, Manchester by the Sea—directed by Kenneth Lonergan and shot by Jody Lee Lipes, has been receiving numerous awards and nominations for its excellence. Hlinomaz has been a camera operator in diverse venues from Hollywood and independent films, to television, commercials and documentaries. Hlinomaz’ films have premiered at Sundance Film Festival, The Toronto International Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival and exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has been mentored by Miroslav Ondricek (Amadeus), Vilmos Zsigmond (The Deerhunter), Adam Holender (Midnight Cowboy), and Dariusz Wolski (The Martian). Some of Hlinomaz’ credits for camera operating include, Spider-Man 2, How to Make it in America, Bored to Death, 22 Jump Street, Man on a Ledge, City Island, Fighting, Braindead, Daredevil 2, Person of Interest, and Picasso and Braque Go to the Movies.
Jacques Jouffret grew up in Paris and became interested in movies at an early age. “I can easily say that I spent the better part of my childhood and teenage years in all the movie theaters of Paris. That’s pretty much all I did.” He moved to the United States and attended New York University Film School with an eye on directing. During that time, he read an article in American Cinematographer written by Ted Churchill about his first few years as a Steadicam operator, and knew somehow that this device was made for him. “That same year I was working as a PA on a commercial and met Ted. He gave me his card and told me to drive to Maine the next day and take the workshop. I did and never looked back”.
Ari Robbins was first introduced to Steadicam at the age of 18 after returning home from high school. Knowing his future lay within the cinematic industry, he was immediately entranced by the notion of operator and equipment working together so intimately. It was a culmination of all things he was looking for -- a career, a hobby, a profession, but most importantly -- a passion. Ari moved to Los Angeles and immediately began working in the lighting departments. In the fall of 2004 he signed up for a Steadicam Operators Association workshop. He searched and found his ideal rig, and on his 21st birthday, purchased his Steadicam. That same day, he rolled his first shot on set as a Steadicam operator and owner. Ari operates with the same enthusiasm he had the first moment he strapped on his vest, with passion first and the camera second.

Camera Operator of the Year - Television Nominees Andrew Mitchell, SOC The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story
Steven Matzinger, SOC Westworld
Greg Smith, SOC Westworld
Andrew has operated on 344 television episodes, including Touched by an Angel, Everwood, Glee, Scream Queens, The People v. OJ Simpson, and currently Feud. “I love being an operator because it mixes artistic expression, technical knowledge, physicality and social interaction. I’m often teased because I describe shots with sound effects.” Andrew celebrates his 20th year as an operator in 2017. “I have fond memories of tracking my wife around with a wooden mock-up camera on my then newly purchased PRO sled.” Andrew also has a passion for skateboarding and surfing, but when it comes down to it, “I love the work we do, but my greatest joy is my family. Working in television allows me to go home every night.”
After earning a BFA in Illustration, I had an opportunity to load film on a movie. I learned more about creating images that first day on set than I had in all of college. I was hooked into filmmaking. I’ve been lucky to work up through the ranks on many different kinds of projects. From big action pictures with Jan de Bont and Ridley Scott, intense thrillers with David Fincher and Harris Savides, to being in the Galapagos with Peter Weir and Russell Boyd. To working weeks at a time under water and doing complex visual effects units with Mark Vargo, to documenting big surf and off road racing with Dana Brown, to shooting tiny labor of love art films. Every day I’m excited to continue to get to learn from great directors, DPs, operators and assistants, share ideas and do what I started out wanting to do, build images.
Greg Smith has lived in Los Angeles all his life and began his career at 23, as a trainee in Local 600. He worked as an assistant before beginning his career as an operator. He has always wanted to be an operator who is involved in the whole process, which is why he operates handheld, conventional, Steadicam, remote head and Ultimate Arm. These are all tools that he can use very well to help the director and DP’s make their films and tell their stories, depending on the mood and style required. He has worked with very well respected DP’s and directors such as, Don Peterman and Ron Howard, John Seale and Wolfgang Peterman, and John Toll with Ang Lee, as well as, Jonathan Sela, Brendan Galvin, Shelly Johnson, Steven Poster, and David Tattersall. He has also been very lucky to have worked with some of the best crews around, including a ‘dream crew’ on Westworld.

Ben Semanoff, SOC The Night Of
Bruce MacCallum, SOC The Night Of
Bob Gorelick, SOC Stranger Things
After graduating from Temple University, Ben Semanoff, SOC, started a small production company outside Philadelphia. Fascinated by Steadicam, Semanoff purchased a used rig for the business. Shocked by it’s complexity, he enrolled in a workshop that ignited his passion for the art of Steadicam operating. He later began working for Garrett Brown, deploying SuperFlyCam, a lightweight cable camera system. Semanoff eventually took over the operation using the system on such films as Glory Road, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and Paddington Bear. His love of operating continued to grow, and he began looking for opportunities beyond specialty camera! Since then he has operated A camera/Steadicam on such films as Creed, Collateral Beauty, and The Family Fang, along with such television shows as The Leftovers, The Night Of, and currently Netflix’s Ozark. He is based out of New York City, and lives in Bucks County, PA with his wife Erica and two children.
I was born in Hackensack, New Jersey. After attending University of Miami, I was lucky to get a job on the movie Lenny with Dustin Hoffman. I spent the next year working for Dustin and his production company. His generosity helped me to establish myself in NYC. My operating career began one cold night on a platform, using a Lomma Crane on a remote head with a very bad black & white monitor, trying to follow a police car coming at us and then going directly under us. All I could see were the flashing lights on the roof of the car. With help from friends we got the shot. My operating favorites include: The Paper, Ransom, Adjustment Bureau, I Am Legend, Julie & Julia, and most recently, filming the Broadway play Hamilton. For me, operating is the best job on set. I’m still living in New York City and still happy the phone keeps ringing.
Bob Gorelick has been an active camera operator since 1987. He is a longstanding member of IATSE and the SOC. In fact, Bob was the recipient of 2009’s Camera Operator of the Year Award for his work on The Dark Knight. Bob has worked on countless feature films, television shows, commercials, live shows, and music videos. While his name has become synonymous with the world of Steadicam, he is proud to have grown to be one of the top A camera operators working today.

Aaron Medick, SOC Mr. Robot
Sean Savage walked through the gates of Ealing Studios in 1984 as a sixteen-year-old trainee. He observed at first hand the structure of the camera department and knew from an early age that to be a camera operator was his ultimate target. He was fortunate enough to be paired up with the likes of Remi Adefarasin and Martin Kenzie, who mentored him through his formative years. He’s also been privileged to have worked with directors such as Richard Loncraine, Jack Clayton, David Nutter, Miguel Sapochnik and Shekhar Kapur on such films and television shows as Elizabeth, Game of Thrones, Penny Dreadful, and Phantom of the Opera, and now feels as excited about the next filming day as he did 34 years ago.
Aaron Medick, SOC is an Emmy Award winning camera operator from New York. A graduate of NYU, he worked his way up the ranks of the NY indie film scene. In 2003, he joined Local 600. Over the last 14 years, he has worked as a camera operator on features, commercials and television. He is currently the A camera/Steadicam operator on Starz Power and USA Network’s Mr. Robot. He feels it’s an amazing honor to be nominated along side such an incredible group of camera operators.

He has continued to expand the relationships with our incredibly talented membership and the SOC’s involvement with our respected corporate members. George has been active as a camera operator since the early 1990s and specializes in Steadicam. He has had the pleasure of working with directors such as Wes Craven, Steven Spielberg, David Lynch, Joss Whedon, Peter Weir, and Spike Lee. His credits include Lincoln, War of the Worlds, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, Avengers, Oblivion, The Terminal, Ray, Master and Commander, and Terminator Genisys. After cutting his teeth on music videos and political campaigns, he decided to bring his camera and Steadicam talent to LA, where he’s enjoyed contributing to the iconic looks of TV series such as: Dexter, True Blood, Shameless, and many others. Eric’s interests also include consulting on the development of camera equipment.
With a handful of diverse roles, Tom Everett Scott has developed a reputation as one of the industry’s most versatile actors, showing up on the big screen, small screen and stage. Scott first came to Hollywood’s attention as the soulful drummer in That Thing You Do, Tom Hank’s feature film directorial debut. Other film credits include: River Red, Boiler Room, One True Thing opposite Meryl Streep, Mars Needs Moms, Race to Witch Mountain, Because I Said So opposite Diane Keaton, Parental Guidance opposite Billy Crystal, and the award-winning La La Land. Scott made his feature film writing and directing debut with the short Glock, which won Best Short Film at the Gen Art Film Festival.
