About the SOC

The Society of Camera Operators began in 1979 as the Society of Operating Cameramen (SOC)—an organization dedicated to the advancement of the art and creative contributions of the camera operator in the motion picture and television industries.

Thirteen camera operators banded together with the goal of advancing the position of the working camera operator in the motion picture and television industries. They drew up a constitution and by-laws and the Society of Operating Cameramen was born.

Having since changed its name to The Society of Camera Operators, the SOC continues to bring industry leaders and cinematic artists into close confederation. Society members are kept at the forefront of the industry’s ever-advancing technology through continuing workshops and corporate sponsored equipment showcases.

Our Camera Operator quarterly magazine is noted for its significant contribution to the industry. Informative articles and interviews range from historical pieces to in-depth coverage of the most current technology.

Vision is the most important sense that camera operators use in our daily work. As such, it bonds SOC members to children with vision problems.

Incorporated as a nonprofit charitable organization in 1981, the SOC dedicates its full support to The Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Annually, the SOC meets this challenge with proceeds from the Lifetime Achievement Awards.

To further honor the talented men and women behind the camera, the first SOC Lifetime Achievement Awards took place in 1981.

The SOC is an internationally recognized professional honorary Society. The core activities of the Society are the annual SOC Awards, publishing the Society’s magazine Camera Operator, and our charitable commitment to The Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Governors Lifetime Achievement Award

Colin Farrell

Colin Farrell has had a distinguished career of nearly twenty-plus years in film and television. An accomplished actor recognized the world over, Farrell can be seen in writer/ director Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin for Searchlight Pictures which re-teamed him with the director and In Bruges co-star Brendan Gleeson. The film made its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival and Farrell won ‘Best Actor.’ For the film he has also won the NY Film Critic Circle Award, National Board of Review, and was awarded a Golden Globe

He was also recently seen in Warner Brother’s The Batman for director Matt Reeves; in the MGM/ Amazon film Thirteen Lives for director Ron Howard; the BBC / AMC drama The North Water and A24’s After Yang which premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival and won Farrell a NY Film Cicle.

In 2019, he starred in the live action film Dumbo and in 2018, Fox’s ensemble feature Widows, directed by Steve McQueen and co-starring Viola Davis. In 2017, Farrell made his second film with Yorgos Lanthimos, The Killing of a Sacred Deer opposite Nicole Kidman for A24. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival along with Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, in which he also starred with Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning, and Kirsten Dunst. That same year, he appeared opposite Denzel Washington in the Sony film Roman Israel, Esq., written and directed by Dan Gilroy. Lanthimos’s The Lobster, co-starring Rachel Weisz, was Farrell’s first time working with the reputable director. The film won the Jury Prize at the 68th Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for a 2016 BAFTA. Farrell was also nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globe Awards, Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards, and Best European Actor at the European Film Awards for his role in the film.

June 2015 marked Farrell’s television debut in the second season of HBO’s True Detective. In 2009, he won a Golden Globe for his role in Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges. Past work also includes Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Miss Julie, Saving Mr. Banks, Winter’s Tale, Dead Man Down, Total Recall, Peter Weir’s The Way Back, London Boulevard, Fright Night, the Warner Bros. comedy Horrible Bosses, and Ondine. Farrell also had memorable roles in Gavin O’Conner’s Pride and Glory, Miami Vice, Oliver Stone’s Alexander, Terrence Malick’s The New World, Ask the Dust, The Recruit, A Home at the End of the World, based on the Michael Cunningham novel, and two of Joel Schumacher’s films, Phone Booth and Tigerland. Other notable film credits include Minority Report, Daredevil, American Outlaws, SWAT, and Intermission.

Born and raised in Castleknock in the Republic of Ireland, Farrell attended the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin before landing starring roles in Deirde Purcell’s mini-series Falling for a Dancer, the BBC series Ballykissangel, and Tim Roth’s directorial debut, The War Zone.

Camera Operator Lifetime Achievement Award

Don Devine, SOC

Don Devine’s love for filmmaking began early, with home movies shot with his dad’s Super 8 camera and populated with his five siblings and family pets. While going to college, he began working part-time at Film Surgeons, an editing facility owned by Peter and Kay Verity. After several years of amiable mentoring and a variety of opportunities, Don went to work for Avery/ Tirce Productions as a production assistant where he had the good fortune to be taken under the wing of a generous camera assistant, Doug Davis. When the company closed, Don took a leap of faith and began the arduous and unpredictable task of freelancing as a camera assistant.

With the encouragement and recommendations from people he had met along the way, he eventually began to assist some wonderful Directors of Photography like Russell Carpenter, ASC and Fred Murphy, ASC. Don and Fred worked together on The Trip to Bountiful, Hoosiers, and Best Seller. But Don always knew that he wanted to operate, and it was his first collaboration with Shelly Johnson, ASC that launched his career as an operator. Shelly took his own leap of faith and hired a very green, but enthusiastic operator. That decision led to a partnership that has lasted over thirty years, and includes such projects as Jurassic Park 3, Hidalgo, The House Bunny, Sky High, and Greyhound. Around the same time, Don began another life-long collaboration and lasting friendship with Jeffrey Jur, ASC who was also looking to use an operator for the first time.

Together, he and Jeff have worked on The Big Picture, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Joy Ride, and Panic

Don’s work as an operator has given him the opportunity to work with an array of extremely talented and inspiring DP’s and the chance to work on a diverse collection of wonderful projects. Kramer Morgenthau, ASC, Christopher Manley, ASC, Enrique Chediak, ASC, David Franco, Darran Tiernan, and Carl Herse have all put their trust in Don to operate on great shows like The Express, Fracture, Chef, Mad Men, Lady and the Tramp, Perry Mason, and Barry.

Camera Operator, Live & Non-Scripted Lifetime Achievement Award

Charlie Huntley

Charlie Huntley saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. He decided he wanted to be a camera operator and drummer and never looked back. While in high school and then as a college student, majoring in ‘Radio, TV, Motion Pictures,’ he quickly developed operating skills working at the university’s television station on countless broadcasts including news, documentaries, symphony performances, basketball and football games. He fondly recalls experiences on 1950’s technology— working with turret cameras, mono recording devices and lighting scoops.

Charlie was still a student when he began operating commercially for the ACC Basketball Network. This led to other sports opportunities, traveling the world shooting amateur and professional events. Charlie won his first of five Emmy’s as a member of ABC Sports’ camera team for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Along the way he added entertainment productions to his credits, being hired in 1978 as a camera operator for Tony Awards broadcasts, where he shoots to this day. During his career Charlie has been fortunate to be the eye behind the camera for MTV’s Unplugged and VH1’s Storyteller—including episodes featuring Eric Clapton, Nirvana, Tony Bennett, Bruce Springsteen, Melissa Etheridge, and Stevie Nicks. He served on the camera team for Live from Lincoln Center and Live in HD from the Met for 20 and 8 years respectively. He has shot Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and MTV Awards, along with Super Bowl Halftime shows. Charlie’s technical team won an Emmy for NBC’s The Sound of Music Live and he shot, since 1992, Kennedy Center Honors.

Charlie was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He moved near and graduated from the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill. Charlie has received three Peabody Awards and garnered 60 Emmy nominations. Last September he was honored by UNC for Outstanding Contributions to the Arts. Charlie currently lives and works in New York City. He recently portrayed a network camera operator on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. As for being a drummer, until the 1990’s Charlie was in various groups, however he found putting drummers on TV was more rewarding than playing.

Annie Klines Schulhof President, National Board of Review

Camera Technician Lifetime Achievement Award

Tommy Klines

Tommy first fell in love with film and photography in high school, where he was a yearbook photographer and shot football game films. While at Great Neck South, his sister, Annie Schulhof, who “patiently” put up with Tommy’s darkroom in their shared bathroom, introduced him to Commercial Director, Michael Gottlieb, who hired Tommy as PA on Cover Girl and Revlon commercials.

During his time receiving his BFA at NYU School of the Arts, Film and Television, Tommy interned for Milton Greene Studios, known for his photos of Marilyn Monroe. He also joined union Nabet. After working on a documentary, interviewing Francis Ford Coppola and Gordon Willis, he was inspired and realized his next step was a move to LA.

Tommy’s first job in LA was as prep tech at F&B Ceco, while waiting to be placed on the Hollywood work experience roster. Dick Barlow, head of The Burbank Studios Camera Department helped him join The International Cinematographers Guild. One of Tommy’s early mentors was Ralph Gerling, whom he worked for on Resurrection. He also worked for Vittorio Storaro, One From The Heart and Matt Leonetti, Poltergeist. Realizing that he would most likely move to first assistant on series television, Tommy took jobs as second assistant with opportunity to move up on the additional camera. He moved up permanently on Fame. Fellow operators taught Tommy how to zoom, focus, and thread a camera quickly. That show holds some of his fondest memories. He then worked on mini-series with William Spencer, Hollywood Wives, Joe Biroc, A Death In California, and numerous series and features throughout the 80’s and 90’s.

Tommy is also grateful to have worked with Andrzej Bartkowiak on Dante’s Peak, U.S. Marshals, Lethal Weapon 4, and Cradle 2 the Grave. Also John Toll on Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky, and The Last Samurai and Michael Chapman on Primal Fear, Six Days Seven Nights, and The Story of Us. He met Karl Walter Lindenlaub, on Independence Day and continues to work with him. Tommy has wrapped over a dozen movies with Karl including Red Corner, The Princess Diaries, The Banger Sisters, and Cosmos.

Mobile Camera Platform Operator Lifetime Achievement Award

Darryl Humber

From the first time Darryl Humber saw Harrison Ford outrunning that boulder in Raiders of the Lost Ark, he was hooked. Not many people from Oak Grove, Alabama went into movies, so Darryl planned a career in radio, his second love, and began studying communications at the University of Alabama. A chance encounter with a friend led him to sign up for a weekend class on film making, taught by Billy Field, a screenwriter who had worked in Hollywood. At the end of the six week class, Darryl and his classmates made a short film and somehow he ended up in the grip department. The following summer, Mr. Field helped Darryl secure a spot on a low budget film shooting in Mobile, Alabama. He loved every second of it - thus ended his radio career.

Darryl followed up with several TV movies and commercials in Birmingham, before moving to Atlanta to become a company grip on My Cousin Vinny. Discovering a love of camera movement, he began working toward learning the craft of the dolly grip. Darryl’s first “A” camera dolly position was on the long running TV series In The Heat Of The Night. In 2001, he moved to Los Angeles. Darryl later began a 20 year working relationship with respected key grip Alan Rawlins and his ‘Gentlemen Grips.’ This led to features such as Big Fish, Constantine, Furious 7, Black Panther, and Bad Boys For Life, among others. It also led to a long running relationship with renowned cinematographer Philippe Rousselot, ASC.

In 2012, Darryl and his family returned to Atlanta, where he completed several Marvel projects and continues to work in the local film community. In 2019, Alan retired the famous ‘Gentlemen Grips’ name. Darryl has been fortunate to remain with the Rawlins family and currently works for his son, key grip Kerry.

Darryl lives in Roswell, Georgia with his wife, Rebecca, son Jackson, three dogs and two cats. And importantly, within driving distance of his daughter Kylie. He is proudly a 22 year member of IATSE Local 80 and 32 year member of IATSE Local 479.

Still Photographer Lifetime Achievement Award

Bruce McBroom

Bruce McBroom’s earliest memories are of taking snapshots with his Kodak. He recalls his grade school years and knowing his uncles—one owning a photography studio and the other an established actor. By the time Bruce was 13, the photography bug had bitten him. Throughout high school he enrolled in every photography class and shot untold numbers of photos for his yearbooks.

Bruce also coveted his experience of traveling to Warner Brothers with his uncle, David Bruce. Here he saw first-hand, the magic that goes into filmmaking. Bruce’s passion deepened while watching old movies his uncle had acted in with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland.

Hearing stories about acting and working behind the scenes drove his desire to be part of the industry.

After high school, Bruce enrolled in the photography program at LA Trade Tech College. His first photography job was as assistant to celebrity photographer, Sid Avery, where he learned even more about photography. A few years later, Bruce was invited to join the US Army, where he was a still and motion picture photographer in the Signal Corps.

After his service, Bruce went out on his own, photographing the Rock ‘n’ Roll scene for magazines and the Hollywood scene for the New York Times. He freelanced for ABC TV and his film career began when he was recommended to Blake Edwards for an opportunity to provide special photography for a week on the set of The Party, starring Peter Sellers.

Bruce went on to work with many other award winning directors as still photographer on 48 Hours, Under Fire, Coming to America, Poltergeist, ET, Commando, What’s Up Doc, New York New York, Cannery Row, Godfather Part II, 10, In the Line of Fire, The Hunt for Red October, SOB, Clear and Present Danger, Flight of the Intruder, Twins, City Slickers, 6 Days 7 Nights, Mr. Saturday Night, and Sleepless in Seattle.

In 1969, Bruce joined Local 659 of the International Photographers Union and is a proud member to this day. Bruce takes extraordinary pride in creating photos that become posters that sell movies.

Co-founder of Hudson Spider and a working cinematographer, originally from Australia.

Tim works closely with other filmmakers to bring great product ideas to reality, utilizing Hudson Spider’s state of the art prototype manufacturing center in Valencia, California.

The Slider’s greatest trait is its incredible rigidity, which means that it does not require end supports, re-enabling dollies their ability to move during a take, as they should.

Academy Award winning Key Grip with over 40 years of experience and more than 100 features to his credits.

The Hudson Slider was a tool developed to expedite the process and give the operator more flexibility to accomplish complicated shots smoothly.

Lukasz Bielan

Bullet Train

Lukasz Bielan is a Polish/American camera operator and cinematographer, who now resides in California. Since entering the world of cinema in the early 90s, he has served as assistant camera operator and camera operator in acclaimed international films, among which are the biographical drama Chaplin, Sleepless in Seattle, Public Enemies, Oblivion, Spectre, the Transformers series, Deadpool 2, 6 Underground, The Tomorrow War, Being the Ricardos, Extraction 2, and All The Lights We Cannot See, to name but a few. His work on Life of Pi earned him SOC’s Camera Operator of the Year Award Nomination and the British Society of Cinematographers GBCT Operators Award in 2013. Bielan has begun to transform from operating into a cinematographer. He recently shot Love Sonia, starring Freida Pinto and Demi Moore, and The Comeback Trail, starring Robert DeNiro.

Daniel Bishop, SOC | ASSOC BSC | ACO

All Quiet on the Western Front

Daniel Bishop, SOC is from the United Kingdom and his love of cinema started with Dougie Slocombe BSC’s beautiful photography on Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark. Daniel studied film and television in Wales and after graduating in 1999, worked as a camera operator on extreme documentaries in harsh locations all over the world. After completing his Steadicam course with Garrett Brown and Larry McConkey in 2004, he discovered his love for storytelling and camera movement. Since then, Daniel has worked as “A” camera operator/Steadicam on TV shows such as Black Mirror, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Patrick Melrose, the BBC’s Rillington Place, Sherlock, and Bryan Cranston’s Your Honor. Last year he operated on Todd Field’s critically acclaimed movie TÁR with Cate Blanchett in Berlin. He is currently shooting a new Star Wars TV series for Disney in London.

Mitch Dubin, SOC

The Fabelmans

Mitch Dubin, SOC has done more than 100 films as a Camera Operator, including 18 films as the “A” Camera Operator for Steven Spielberg. Mitch Dubin’s first job in the film industry was as a post-production PA on Apocalypse Now at Zoetrope Studios in San Francisco. During additional photography for The Black Stallion and Apocalypse Now he realized working on the set, behind the camera was where he wanted to be. Mitch worked his way through the ranks of the camera department until he settled into the job of Camera Operator. Thirty-five years later Mitch still loves his job. He has been fortunate to have worked on many great films with exceptionally talented crews. Every project has been a labor of love, that has made his life in the film industry a wonderful adventure.

Colin Anderson, SOC, “B” Camera / Steadicam Operator The Fabelmans

Born and raised in South Africa, Colin Anderson, SOC’s love of photography was instilled in him from an early age by his father, a news photographer at the time. Once he joined the film industry, Colin worked his way through the camera ranks for ten years before moving to Los Angeles. He started camera operating in 1995. Colin works mainly on feature films and has been fortunate enough to have worked with directors like JJ Abrams, Paul Thomas Anderson, Ben Affleck, Steven Spielberg, and Martin Scorsese. Jason Ellson, SOC is a camera and Steadicam operator based in Los Angeles. Jason began his career shooting news and documentaries in Australia and South East Asia. He became an accredited Steadicam operator in 1998, before moving to the United States in 2000, where he followed his passion to pursue a career in narrative work. When Jason is not working, he loves spending time with his wife and three children. A key component of his lifestyle is geared towards fitness. Jason’s credits include Hidden Figures, Mulan, Mortal Kombat, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. He was nominated for SOC Camera Operator of the Year in 2021 for his work on Mulan

Geoffrey Haley, SOC, has been operating a camera for the better part of three decades —spanning four continents, twenty-two countries, and over one hundred credits. With six SOC Camera Operator of the Year nominations and two wins to date, Geoff continues to relish, nurture and grow in his craft—eager to tackle each day with deep gratitude and a fresh sense of adventure.

Ari Robbins, SOC - Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths

Ari Robbins, SOC, was first introduced to Steadicam at the age of eighteen. Knowing his future lay within the cinematic industry, he was immediately entranced by the notion of operator and equipment working together so intimately. It was a culmination of all things he was looking for: a career, a hobby, a profession, but most importantly, a passion. Ari moved to Los Angeles and immediately began working in lighting departments. In the fall of 2004 he signed up for a Steadicam Operators Association workshop. After graduating, he searched and found his ideal rig and, on his twenty-first birthday, purchased his Steadicam. That same day, he rolled his first shot on set as a Steadicam operator and owner. Ari operates with the same enthusiasm he had the first moment he strapped on his vest, with passion first and the camera second.

Dave Chameides, SOC

Ozark, S 4 Ep 14, “A Hard Wayto Go”

After a third failed attempt at professional glockenspiel, Dave Chameides, SOC found Steadicam at the age of 21. Career highlights include ER, West Wing, Donnie Darko, and Leprechaun 2, considered to be the finest entry into the Leprechaun oeuvre. Honors include two SOC Award nominations, two Emmys, and a ‘where’s the commissary’ from Mickey Rooney, all eclipsed by the sheer joy Dave experienced working on Ozark alongside his oldest daughter, watching her excel in every way. Dave is overwhelmed by this nomination and thanks the entire SOC body. To be considered by one’s peers worthy of recognition such as this is an incredible honor and he wishes all the nominees luck. Dave’s thanks go to his wife, their daughters, dog Rocky, and of course, his parents, who still can’t believe he is actually wearing a tie.

Cristian Trova, “B” Camera Operator

Ozark, S 4 Ep 14, “A Hard Wayto Go”

Cristian Trova is a 1995 Graduate of USF Tampa with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art, with emphasis in Cinematography. He returned home to the Berkshires in western Massachusetts in 1996 to work in VFX with Douglas Trumbull, Joel Hynek, and John Gaeta on projects such as Eraser, Event Horizon, and The Matrix. Cristian worked and learned with Richard Sands and Gregory Crewdson also while living in the Berkshires. He transitioned to New York in television, working and learning with Frank Prinzi, ASC, Mike Latino, John Heron, David Mullen, ASC, and Craig Dibona, ASC. In 2018, he moved to Atlanta and was fortunate enough to meet, work, and learn from Ben Semanoff, Liam Sinnott, Ari Issler, Dave Chameides, and Andrew Fisher. Cristian wants to thank all who helped shape his career.

Sam Ellison, SOC

Severance, S 1 Ep 3, “In Perpetuity”

Sam Ellison, SOC is a camera operator, traveler, and documentarian based in New York City. Specifically, he lives in Ridgewood Queens, which was recently named the 4th-coolest neighborhood in the world. Sam was previously nominated for the SOC’s Camera Operator of the Year Award in 2020, for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Other highlights of his recent operating work include The Nickel Boys (2023), The Good Nurse (2022), I Know This Much is True (2020), and the Academy Award winner Manchester By The Sea (2016). Sam also directed a feature documentary, Chèche Lavi (Looking for Life), which premiered at Rotterdam in 2019, and played a long run of festivals worldwide. He received his BA from Harvard and his MFA from Stanford University.

Stanley Fernandez, Camera Operator Severance, S 1 Ep 3, “In Perpetuity”

Stanley Fernandez was born in Brooklyn, NY from Ecuadorian parents. He worked his way up through the camera department, working at Camera Service Center rental house and eventually finding the path to camera PA on the set of Law and Order. Stanley settled in on a focus puller career in features like Eternal Sunshine, Precious, Moonrise Kingdom, A Most Violent Year, Selma, Ghostbusters, A Quiet Place, and television’s Pose. Camera operating, Stanley’s passion, allowed moving up on The Glorias, Tick Tick Boom, When They See Us, and Severance. Netflix’s The Watcher and FX’s American Horror Story NYC have offered opportunities to be director of photography.

Born and raised in Pasadena, California, surrounded by music and the arts with a classical musician/painter mother, and a scientist/pianist/cellist/photographer father, Sarah Levy, SOC, discovered a love for cinematography and camera operating while at UCSD and USC film school. Sarah spent the first ten years of her career traveling around the world camera operating and DP-ing documentaries, reality shows, and independent features. She has worked as a camera operator in scripted television and feature films for the last thirteen years. Memorable past credits include the Disney reboot of Haunted Mansion, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, Captain Marvel, Little Fires Everywhere, The Muppets, and The Office.

Dominic Bartolone, SOC

Born and raised in Southern California Dominic Bartolone, SOC got his start in the motion picture industry in 2000, at Panavision International in Los Angeles. During his 3 years at Panavision, Dominic worked as a camera service and preparatory technician. On his departure from Panavision, Dominic immediately became part of big Hollywood productions as a camera assistant and technician, working on projects such as Collateral, Open Range, Flicka, Rush Hour 3, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, and more. Dominic is currently working as an SOC camera operator on Emmy and ASC nominated Winning Time on HBO. He recently finished season 1 of Disney+’s National Treasure “Edge of History” and is mentored by SOC Historical Shot Award winner Jimmy Muro.

Born and raised in the Midwest, Justin Cameron, SOC grew up reading and admiring the pictures in American Cinematographer. After studying at and graduating from Columbia, he began chasing that admiration by joining Local 600 in 2008 as a 1st AC and worked his way up to the camera operator position. Justin has spent the last decade learning the art, craft, and contribution of the camera operator through his work on both television and feature films. His credits include Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter, and The Most Dangerous Animal of All. Justin is currently working as an SOC camera operator on the Emmy and ASC nominated show Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on HBO.

At age five John Lyke wasn’t allowed to hold the home video camera, instead he bossed his mom around as they shot perfect remakes of Gilligan’s Island. Unfortunately, John was devastated to constantly find his masterpieces looked just like kids playing around. Luckily his neighbor, Bruce Taylor, Emmy Awardwinning cinematographer, took John under his wing. Imagine ESPN interviews with sports legends, where a fourteen-year-old is back focusing the camera. Rewind back to age five when John started roller-skating. By age ten he was rollerblading with cameras and by twenty was a pro rollerblader. A few years later a BTS clip of John operating on blades went viral (2013 commercial introducing Freefly’s Movi), launching his rollerblade camera operator career.

Gary Malouf

The Bear, S1 Ep7, “The Review”

Gary Malouf is a Chicago based Camera Operator. He began his career as a Camera Utility in 2012. In 2013, he went on to become a 2nd AC. In 2017, he was given his first opportunity to operate on the film Eighth Grade He has since had the pleasure to collaborate with many talented filmmakers, and the privilege to do the work that he loves.

Gary’s recent credits include The Bear, Justified: City Primeval, Map of Tiny Perfect Things, and Chicago Fire.

Chris Dame, “B” Camera Operator

The Bear, S1 Ep7, “The Review”

Chris Dame, a Chicago native, studied film and art history in college. After graduating, he worked at a camera rental house learning film equipment. He has been in the camera department for twenty-two years, and has been operating for the last seven. In that time, he had the opportunity to work on The Dark Knight, Boss, and the Dhoom franchise. Chris feels very fortunate to have worked on The Bear. He is thankful to Chris Storer, the creator, and Andrew Wehde, the cinematographer, who both granted him a tremendous amount of freedom. Chris wouldn’t be who he is today without his parents. He credits his mother, an artist, for his creative sense; and his father, a sociology teacher, for instilling a love for the collaborative process.

Paul Sanchez The Old Man, S 1 Ep 1, “I”

In 1984, Paul Sanchez left the small seaside town of Santa Cruz to pursue photography at the San Francisco Art Institute. Ten years later, after studying painting, music and experimental film, he then found himself working as a 2nd Assistant on the set of Mrs. Doubtfire. This was the beginning a 30-year career in film and television that has included operating on Sideways, 310 to Yuma, Walk the Line, Mad Men, The Old Man, and most recently, Star Wars “The Skeleton Crew.” In addition, he has made many award-winning documentaries with his wife, Mary Trunk, over the past 35 years.

Hilton Goring, “B” Camera Operator The Old Man, S 1 Ep 1, “I”

Born in London, of Guyanese descent, Hilton Goring has worked in Hollywood for over 25 years starting as a camera loader and 1st AC, then entering the world of operating via Steadicam. Hilton’s craft as an operator grew under the tutelage of some of the world’s top directors and cinematographers. This combined with having the good fortune of collaborating with some of Hollywood’s finest AC’s, operators, and technicians has allowed his career to flourish. After working in the world of commercials and sports promos, next came feature films and television, where Hilton’s abilities as a versatile operator have taken him to many continents and created great friendships and experiences. Hilton resides in Los Angeles with his wife, two daughters, and cat and supports Tottenham Hotspur FC.

Jarrett Morgan, SOC Atlanta, S 3 Ep 5, “CancerAttack”

Jarrett Morgan, SOC recalls his earliest experiences in a sound booth, helping his mom with Christmas Eve services, where he first felt the magic of production. Since those early days as a teenager he has learned a lot more from wonderful mentoring by operators, directors, cinematographers, and camera assistants on every set. Jarrett tries to bring the richness of their lives, stories, and teachings to every day on set. He has been fortunate enough to learn from some incredible filmmakers who have entrusted their creative vision to him. These incredible people Jarrett works with, are a big reason for his love of the job and he attributes his success to them. Even after 10 years on proper sets, Jarrett is still marveling at the magic we make.

Tamara is co-founder of Scirens, “Screen Sirens for Science,” a creative team dedicated to work at the intersection of science and entertainment. As a writer, she has scripted hundreds of live events, and won a Primetime Emmy Award for Emma Approved, a multi-platform adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma.

Voice Over Artist: Joyce Kurtz

Joyce Kurtz has worked on hundreds of television and radio commercials, cartoons, and video games. She’s known for being the voice of MTV and Princess Leia in Star Wars Video Games

In the late 1980’s she formed “Joyce’s Voices,” a loop group and has coordinated the group ADR on hundreds of TV shows such as: The Wonder Years, Party of 5, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, House, Dexter, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Career and Opportunities in Murder and Mayhem, Narcos, and Grey’s Anatomy. Joyce and her daughter, Lily, would like to express their extreme gratitude to the SOC for all they do for The Vision Center Children’s Hospital Coincidentally, Lily is a patient of Dr. Borchert’s and a part of his ONH study at Children’s Hospital.

Manolo Rojas, SOC

Manolo Rojas, SOC was born in Antofagasta, Chile. He has been carrying a camera on his shoulder since age 10 and by 19 he had shot his first 35mm commercial as a Steadicam Operator. Manolo attended film school at IACC Institute of Arts and Science

Communications in Santiago, Chile. During that time he traveled to Philadelphia, taking his first Steadicam workshop with Garrett Brown. Manolo continued to work in commercials and movies in Chile and moved in 2009 to the US to continue his growth as an operator. As an operator, Manolo has been honored to work on amazing projects such as Twin Peaks, The Menu, Shotgun Wedding, and Snowfall, for which in 2021 he received the SOC’s Camera Operator of the Year – Television, with “B” Camera Operator, Pauline Edwards.

Pauline Edwards, SOC

Pauline Edwards, SOC is from NYC and graduated with a degree in Film Technology from Valencia C.C., Orlando, Florida. After moving to Los Angeles, she worked as a loader and 2nd AC, getting her opportunity to become a camera operator in unscripted television in 2009. She operated on America’s Next Top Model, Bring It, Rhythm + Flow, Encore, and RuPaul’s Drag Race. Pauline transitioned to narrative in 2018, working with Tommy Maddox Upshaw, ASC on television series such as Huge In France, On My Block, Snowfall, and the feature film White Men Can’t Jump. She’s currently filming the final season of Snowfall. Pauline has been a member of Local 600 since 2004 and active member of the SOC since 2019.

George Billinger, SOC

George Billinger is SOC President and serves as Chair for this year’s Award Show Committee. He continues to be honored to lead the SOC and is especially proud of its many accomplishments of over the last several years. George continually encourages efforts to increase membership, offer expanded educational opportunities and strengthen industry relationships, just to name a few. George has been active as a camera operator since the early 1990s and specializes in Steadicam. He has had the pleasure of working with directors such as Steven Spielberg, David Lynch, Josh Whedon, Peter Weir, Scott Frank and Antoine Fuqua. His credits include Lincoln, War of the Worlds, Indian Jones and the Crystal Skull, Avengers, Oblivion, The Terminal, Ray, Terminator Genisys, Queen’s Gambit, and Prey. George resides in Los Angeles, CA.

Eric Fletcher, SOC

Born to a still photographer Eric Fletcher, SOC got his start early when his father would travel to shoot political candidates. Fletcher followed in his father’s footsteps, but this time instead of shooting stills of political candidates, Fletcher shot their commercials and amassed an enviable election rate. In the mid 90’s, Fletcher won 25 Emmy’s for his work with CBS affiliate KMOV-TV. In 2001, he moved to Los Angeles where he’s worked on TV series and films such as; Dexter, True Blood, Shameless, and many others.  Fletcher also uses his experience to consult with equipment manufactures to make their equipment perform better and more efficiently on set, and follow his philosophy “Don’t let your equipment limit you.”

Jeffrey Jur, ASC

Jeffrey Jur, ASC studied film at Columbia College in Chicago. His professional cinematography career began with American Playhouse telefilms, including Any Friend of Nicholas Nickleby Is a Friend of Mine. After moving to Hollywood, Jeffrey went on to shoot films such as Dirty Dancing, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding, amongst many others. His television series work includes Westworld, Dirty Sexy Money, Halt & Catch Fire, Perception, and, Colony. Jeffrey has received numerous accolades, including Emmys for his artistry on HBO’s Carnivale and Bessie and receiving the American Society of Cinematographers, Career Achievement Award in 2019. He also garnered ASC’s Outstanding Achievement Award for Last Call and Carnivale.

Dr. Lee earned his MD from Cornell University and went on to Harvard Medical School as a Heed Fellow. Since being recruited to the Children’s Dr. Lee has developed the Retina Institute into a world-class center and was promoted to director of the Vision Center. He’s made several advances in our understanding of pediatric retinal disease and has recruited a team of physicians and scientists to develop new treatments for several retinal diseases. In addition to developing a robust research program, he’s helped create an innovative education platform to teach doctors in developing countries remotely over the Internet.

Simon Jayes, SOC

Simon Jayes, SOC , has been involved in the camera department since 1984 and has been a Camera Operator for the last 30 years. Simon was part of the team that built the first TechnoCranes and he moved to Los Angeles in 1990 to introduce this technology into the US through his company: TechnoCrane Ltd. In 2005, Simon added Steadicam to his abilities. Since being in the US, Simon has had the privilege of working with many talented crews and his credits include Ahsoka, The Mandalorian, Wonder Woman 1984, I Am the Night, True Blood, Our Flag Means Death, Quantum of Solace, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, and Miles Ahead , to name a few.

Shelly Johnson, ASC

Shelly Johnson, ASC shot his first feature as Director of Photography in 1986… this project also happened to be the first “A” Camera operating job for Don Devine, SOC. Shelly has shot over 100 full length projects including Greyhound, Captain America: First Avenger, Jurassic Park III, The Wolfman, and Hidalgo. As near as he can tell, Don was by his side on at least 40 of these. Johnson is a four-time ASC Award nominee for Cinematography (Devine serving as “A” Camera Operator for each). Shelly has enjoyed long relationships with crew members that have dedicated decades to collaboration, however Don is by far the longest standing member of the crew. Recently, Johnson has shot Sin Limites, Honest Thief, Blacklight, and just completed Elevation.

Nikk “2K” Hearn-Sutton, SOC

Nikk “2K” Hearn-Sutton, SOC, Cincinnati, Ohio, is a Camera/ Steadicam operator. He has always had a love of photography, especially influenced by Gordon Parks and cinema as a child. Nikk is co-chair of the SOC Inclusion Committee and the first Black elected to its Board of Governors. He was highlighted in the Fall 2018 edition of Camera Operator magazine in the “Smooth Operator” department. He is also a part of the Mentor/ Mentee programs for both SOC and Local 600, allowing him to give back to those who love the craft as much as he does. Being one of ‘The Talented Tenth,’ his credits include Bones and All, The Big Ugly, 10 Minutes Gone, The Strangers: Prey at Night, Anastasia: Once Upon a Time, and NFL Films.

Beth McCarthy-Miller

Beth McCarthy-Miller began her career at MTV directing such shows as MTV Unplugged, the MTV Video Music Awards, The Eagles: Hell Freezes Over, along with launching and directing The Jon Stewart Show. She directed eleven seasons of SNL, two Superbowl Halftime shows, America: A Tribute to Heroes, and pilots for RENO:911, Great News, and Bob Hearts Abishola Beth has been director for multiple Emmy nominated episodes from 30 Rock and Modern Family, to Parks and Rec, Brooklyn 99, and The Good Place. Her credits also include The Kominsky Method and Veep, for which she won one of her four DGA Awards. Beth directed The Sound of Music LIVE, Adele: Live in NY, and the Clio winning live commercial for The Greatest Showman.

John “Buzz” Moyer, SOC

John “Buzz” Moyer, SOC, raised in Sewickley, Pa., graduated with a BS in Cinema/ Photography from Ithaca College. He began his freelance career in Pittsburgh, starting in the corporate and commercial world. Buzz has now been operating over 30 years. His work includes, among many others, 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Avengers, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Jack Reacher, and Steven Spielberg’s The Post and West Side Story Buzz is proudly a member of IATSE 600 and the SOC, where he serves on the Board of Governors and Education Committee. Also active in the Steadicam Operators Association, Buzz instructs and mentors young and newly invested operators.

Mitch Dubin, SOC

Mitch Dubin has done more than 100 films as a Camera Operator, including 18 films as the “A” Camera Operator for Steven Spielberg. Mitch Dubin’s first job in the film industry was as a post-production PA on Apocalypse Now at Zoetrope Studios in San Francisco. During additional photography for The Black Stallion and Apocalypse Now he realized working on the set, behind the camera was where he wanted to be. Mitch worked his way through the ranks of the camera department until he settled into the job of Camera Operator. Thirty five years later Mitch still loves his job. He has been fortunate to have worked on many great films with exceptionally talented crews. Every project has been a labor of love, that has made his life in the film industry a wonderful adventure.
