the 2013 | 2014 season
Los Angeles | Santa Barbara | Pasadena | Ventura
Welcome to Camerata Pacifica’s 24th Season of Chamber Music Concerts I’m excited to present Camerata Pacifica’s 24th season of concerts. Programming this season I was aware that our silver anniversary season is just around the corner, and my mind unavoidably turned to favorite moments of seasons past. So we begin our review in the 24th season — which both looks back and forward. Lera Auerbach joins us in October to reprise the stunning performances of her Cello Preludes with Ani Aznavoorian, and again in March for the premiere of the latest Camerata commission, a new work for Cello & Ensemble. We bring back performances of Huang Ruo’s To The Four Corners, Thea Musgrave’s Narcissus, Harbison’s Piano Quintet, Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet, Mozart’s Quintet for Piano & Winds and his E-Flat Major Divertimento, Dring, Howells, Rheinberger… Of the work of the past two and a half decades, I’m probably most proud of the Camerata’s ever expanding commission portfolio. Our season opens with music by Camerata composers Huang Ruo and John Harbison, (who is writing a String Trio to be premiered in the 25th season), and closes with Jake Heggie’s Winter Roses, our first significant commission that premiered with the wonderful Frederica von Stade. And people… our wonderful community of musician friends: Ani Aznavoorian, Richard Yongjae O’Neill, Warren Jones, Adam Neiman, Ji Hye Jung, Nick Daniel, José Franch-Ballester, John Steinmetz, Timothy Eckert, Tereza Stanislav, Kate Allen and Joanne Pearce Martin’s back too, with her husband Gavin. We’ve some new people for you to welcome to the Camerata community, violinists Paul Huang, (First Prize Winner of the 2011 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and the 2009 International Violin Competition Sion-Valais in Switzerland), Amy Schwartz-Moretti, (Former concertmaster Florida & Oregon Orchestras) and hornist Martin Owen, (Principal Horn, Berlin Philharmonic). And you! Together we are Camerata Pacifica, and I’m sure we’re all looking forward to celebrating another season of wonderful music, the discovery of pieces new to you and always, always the creativity of live performance by artists with character and talent that marvels and amazes every time. See you at the concerts, Adrian Spence Artistic Director

“[Lera Auerbach offers] drama, big-time theatrical grab-the audience-and shake-them-by-the-neck drama: bold, largescale gestures, biting dissonance and ethereal concords, extreme registers and unusual timbres, huge contracts in dynamics, uninhibited passion and sardonic mockery…” —American Record Guide In October’s program, composer-pianist Lera Auerbach and Ani Aznavoorian perform Auerbach’s 24 Preludes for Cello and Piano, taking the listener through the 24 keys of Western music, each with its own mood, atmosphere, and stories to tell. “Neiman’s pianism is as formidable as it ever was, combining ferocious technique with an intelligent grasp of formal structure.” —Ionarts, Washington, DC
“Neiman’s playing was so rigorous and crystalline that one could only marvel at it.”—Washington Post Camerata Pacifica favorite, Adam Neiman, returns with a solo recital of two of Beethoven’s most important - and difficult - works for piano. The Diabelli Variations have been called “the greatest set of variations ever written,” and the Hammerklavier sonata set a new standard for difficulty, duration, and depth. Fortunately, Neiman can handle it. Don’t miss hearing these extraordinary works in the hands of an extraordinary musician. “superb pianism of Joanne Pearce Martin, a whole world of sounds and expressions...”—Bachtrack.com
Piano works for four hands were often secret sites of courtship among the 19th century European bourgeoisie, creating opportunities for infatuated young couples to sit close together, even touch. In the twenty-first century, married pianists Joanne Pearce Martin (Principal Keyboard, LA Phil. & Principal Pianist Emeritus for the Camerata) and Gavin Martin have been delighting Southland audiences for years. Join them at Camerata Pacifica for a program of two-piano and four-hand works, including Schubert’s gorgeous “Fantasie in F Minor.” Mozart/Grieg* Rachmaninov* Mozart Schubert* Debussy/Ravel* Rachmaninov* Lutosławski
