A new ecologically activated and socially intrigued space is created by lifting away the supporting utilitarian framework for urban life, and placing it in alternate plane. The architecture below interacts directly with the teaming natural environment of the Bend riverfront, creating a new experience of the sustainable inhabitation of space for the adjacent downtown. The scheme aims to create a walkable, interactive urban landscape, allowing people to feel connected to this brand of sustainable life in Bend. Internally, the grouping of efficient building volumes employ hyper-insulated wall systems and advanced internal structural framing. Encased in these systems is the program of a tech hub for a development of solar infrastructure for Bend.

ROMA
Rome, Italy
FOCUS: CONTEXTUAL RESPONSES PUBLIC INTERFACES PROGRAMATIC RELATIONS
This project assesses the current economic state of Italy at large and proposes the architectural reuse of the historical forts of Roma as an impetus for economic growth. As it stands, Italy’s economic position is weak and new business creation is resultantly slow. However, Rome’s tourism has seen an exponential growth in visitation. The project that follows aims to capture Italy’s expanding tourism industry to spur long lasting economic growth through new business development and incubation. In the current state, high rent prices in the city prohibit new ventures from launching and thus being supported by tourists visiting Rome’s many historical sites. The architecture and planning seeks to explore the dichotomy of private corporate needs, and the public desire for historical attraction in tourism. Here, the project has developed a surreptitious play of mixed uses through imposed landform and natural topography.

FOCUS: AFFORDABLE HOUSING
revit, sefaira, illustrator, photoshop, autocad, excel
PRO-FORMA MODELING SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
The migration of populations back into the city has placed an emphasis on the growth of secondary cities. The Olive St. Market project represents a particular stance taken between the growth of secondary cities, the resistance of sprawl, and the socioeconomic concerns of gentrification associated with mass population influx. This project looks at the integration of a 25-story tower into the small town of Eugene, Oregon by focusing capital resources on the first two floors at the ground level. This takes the form of walkable mixed use shopping and dining. This aims both at public approval, and at economic benefit, as higher and more stable commercial revenues allow the building to allocate funds to providing affordable housing above in the tower. As it stands, the Olive St. Market project serves as a proponent for a high rise district made of mixed-use, net zero buildings with public ground floors and pedestrian oriented streets.

FOCUS: INTERDISIPLINARY ANALYSIS HOLISTIC SUSTAINABILITY EXPERIENCE IN EDUCATION
The small site is given ecological context by a collision of agricultural lowlands and expansive wilderness. Rural culture lends activity to a landscape stitched together by a system of trails. The networks of paths are informed by the implementation of frames as portals from one ecosystem to another. What happens in between is the basis for the educational experience. The architecture serves to not only enhance the visitor’s relationship with ecological systems, but to act as a framework for the propagation of a new ecosystem. One expanded scaffold of CLT and glass serves as a plinth to display human intervention in the midst of two ecosystems. The extroverted platform lets the visitor perform a visual survey of both realms before descending back to their path. Below, the walls extend into the landscape, capturing run-off from surrounding hills, and cleansing the site of existing residues from the building’s conception. The water filters through the walls creating a wetland basin below, allowing a visceral understanding to be contextualized by systemic process.

revit, illustrator, photoshop, autocad FOCUS: AFFORDABLE HOUSING DESIGN - BUILD SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
OregonBILDS is a design-build program through the University of Oregon that connects design and construction students to local building professionals, material vendors, city officials, green design consultants, and community service agencies. Working as a cohesive team, the organization partners with HACSA, a local agency focused on providing safe and affordable housing for struggling low income families, to design and construct integrated, sustainable, and affordable housing. For this project, I assisted in the design process from initial conception to submission of permit drawings to the city. As a project leader, I gave community presentations to keep the public and our donors up to date on our designs and progress throughout the project. Other responsibilities included working with material vendors to estimate costs, collaborating with energy consultants, and assisting with the output of final construction documents for submittal.

As a team, the studio went through tens of red-lining sessions with the professor (Rob Thallon) before finally ending the term with a full set of build-ready construction documents. Students began construction in January 2014.

COMMISSIONED WORK FOCUS: INTERIOR DESIGN DESIGN-BUILD SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT During my product design internship with the rapidly expanding brand, Will Leather Goods, I developed a great relationship with the CEO and owner of the company, Bill Adler. After showing interest in the furthering the brand and competency in design, I was commissioned to lead the interior design of their newest 5,000 sf. super retail store in Detroit, Michigan. I was responsible for the conceptualization of the design up to the creation of working drawings. The work above is from the first conceptual phase of the design process. Sited in one of the city's many abandoned markets, this project aims to contribute to the recent revitalization of Detroit. The storefront works with the defining streets of the "motor city" to create a capturing viewing plane for fast passing traffic. The public window front of the store, typically designated for product displays and retail advertisements, instead is used as a space to display the creative community present within Detroit. The once abandoned market creates an activated destination amidst the barren cityscape. Within, the open 5,000 sf. is divided by a labyrinth of walls, shaping the experience and way people interact with products as they progress through the spatially varied "rooms."

ULS FOCUS: MULTI-USE DIGITAL FABRICATION
The ULS stool was a self-prompted experiment to re-think the comfort, function and aesthetics of the typical and redundant studio stool. The ULS stool's aim was to provide ventilation and lower back support while seated, and a adjustable easel to rest work while stepping back to observe. The form was dictated by the curvature of two abstracted intersecting lines on an x y plane. This shape was then given thickness, multiplied, and spaced to provide a platform for seating. Interlacing of the two separate lines in different planes allows a hinged arm to extend the structure of the stool, creating a secondary platform.

Paralleling my research and thesis for the studio project, Utopia's Offcuts, I founded and launched my own brand called Bull & Stash. Using my resources, I made connections to assemble and employ a talented team of journalism students to help bring this brand to life. Leading this small team, I worked to maintained the brand vision while collaborating on the production of a short video, copy of the website, and social media posts for the launch of Bull & Stash on a popular crowd-funding platform called Kickstarter. We launched the kickstarter with an initial goal of $5k on November 24, 2014 and ended on December 24, 2014 having raised $69,829. To view the campaign, please visit cameronhuber.com. In the year following this successful crowdfunding, I with a team of 8 employees have secured a USA made supply chain and set up distribution lines domestically and within 6 countries internationally. The result of this effort has been the sale of 9,000+ notebooks and 4,500+ refills to date. On a drive through beautiful Central Oregon, we had an idea about ideas. We love to fill our notebooks. In fact, we build relationships with the worn covers and collaborate with the pages. But once they’re full, we have to start over with a new notebook. You have to get to know each other, take it slow. Sometimes it’s just not a good match. What if you didn’t have to start over? With Oregon sunshine as a work lamp, we started sketching something that could hold our ideas forever: a notebook that would never run out of pages. Bull and Stash began as an idea and a scrap of leather, but with careful design, quality materials, and the help of many friends and mentors, we have brought that idea to life. There is nothing like sharing an idea with your favorite notebook—we think this is it.

FIRST PLACE ENTRY FOCUS: HIGH PERFORMANCE EVELOPE CONTEXTUAL RESIDENTIAL DESIGN SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES
Using Passive House standards, the aim of this entry was to achieve a high performance envelope and overall system, while providing a truly flexible environment for a forward thinking family. This competition entry was accompanied by an energy spreadsheet calculation to determine annual energy efficiency of the system. From the calculations, I was able to determine the most efficient system I could use for this scenario was a low mass, highly insulated wall assembly. Equally important to minimizing heat and energy loss was my strategy to keep windows small in private rooms while providing larger apertures in the communal living spaces. My competition entry was calculated to only expend 4.32 KBTU/sf/yr. The form of the highly efficient box is contextualized in it's suburban Seattle neighborhood through the employment of a gabled roof and covered front porch. The competition jury praised this entry for it's "restraint, purity of form, friendliness to the neighborhood context, and understanding of energy performance within a holistic approach to sustainability."
