This Portfoio is dedicated to my family. It is within this sacred ring of people that I was able to realize my potential as both an artist and designer. They have fueled and supported my decisions every step of the way and without them I would not be here today, studying Architecture.

Perspective of Site( Factor’s Walk)

This analysis included a look at the sensory experiences and phenomena that were observed whilst walking along the Historic Factor’s Walk parallel to River Street and Bay Street. The above analysis takes a look at how light and distance of figure affect the amount of detail and information that the eye can process. With a lot of backlight and not much front light a figure can appear to be a silhouette rather than a sharply focused and apparently detailed pedestrian.

Pedagogy Turrell is an artsist that deals with light as the only medium of his work. It is experiential and deals in

engaging and challenging the limits of

the human perception. His art is not about the form

but rather the experience and the recognition

of the viewer that he is in one of Turrell’s pieces.

Artist Profile James Turrell

“My no

work has image and

no no

object, focus.”

“I make spaces that apprehend light for our perception, and in some ways gather it, or seem to hold it... My work is more about your seeing, than it is about my seeing.”

Artist Research Significant Works

Chichu Art Museum This museum which was designed by Tadao Ando became a major precedent of mine as Ando instilled the same design liberties and morals within his design, which I also focused on achieving this quarter. His respect to both light and materiality in part of creating his phenomenological architecture were very attractive and I knew that I wanted to design with the idea that the building was to present light as an inclusive design element activating the implication of time on architecture. The Chichu Art Museum also became an architecture of study due to its involvement directly with my archetype artist James Turrell. Turrell worked with him to create an appropriate architecture which would blend cohesively and seamlessly with the art pieces and installations of Turrell. He creates spaces of gathering that appear to be quite sterile in order to influence the subject in a way of a lack thereof. Tadao Ando contains a beautiful design language as he design spaces and not form. He is just as much about the experience as Turrell is in his own work. Ando is an inspiration ans much of my work followed closely the pedagogy of his own design ideas.

Stair Design Orthographics

For my design I decided to hone in more specifically on the design of the processional stair which leads to the underground sector of the complex from the ground level. My staircase is predominantly a concrete monolith riser that has the appearance of floating through both the removal of the kickplate on the riser of the stair and the banding condition on the edge of the stair. In an attempt to delineate the stair from the wall I have chosen to use a granite material on the edge that seperates the main stair mass from the material of the wall creating it as a separate entity. The stair of the design is still in fact connected to the wall to suppport the load of the stair, but the materiality change is used in a manner that creates the illusion that the entire stair mass does not attach to the wall. Another element which I have included in the design of the stair is is lighting which emanates from behind the stair and in between each tread. This once again reinforces the idea of the floating phenomenon and creates a striking contrast as well as a cast of light on the walls which follows the language of the repetitive bands of light that run down the support columns of the processional hallway.

Concrete Concrete became a very compelling material to me after the study that we did of concrete in class. It is to be my main building material in this project due to its flexibility and tactile quality. Tadao Ando is able to use this material in a manner that is majestic and creates strong and heavy visuals. The color is beautiful as is the texture. I plan to cast the walls in place for the underground exhibition space retaining walls while the residence will be faced in pre -cast concrtete panels.

Cedar Wood i am using cedar wood to side the East and West exterior walls of the Turrell’s bedroom on his residence. I am using this material in order to break the monotony of the concrete material as well as to crete a natural juxtaposition to the industrial nature of the concrete. As much of Turrells work is about harnessing the elements of nature to create an experience, I would like to use this natural material to make a nod to his appreciation for nature.

Material Studies Materiality of Design

Glass I chose to embed a large portion of the concrete of the reside with glass in order to give it the effect of transparency. I want Turrell to have a largely open visual to the oublic exhibition space of the courtyard while he is inside of his residence. I also am using the glass element in order to reveal certain water features to patrons of Turrells gallery on the floating bridge over water channel hugging the edge of the depressed courtyard.

Aluminum I am using aluminum for the curtain wall systems within my design. I will have the system painted in black in order to make it less obvious to the eye while looking through the curtain wall. This material is the most commonly used one for a curtain wall system and that is why I have chosen to use it within my design.

My project is a live, work and exhibition space for the artist James Turrell. The project focuses its form and experience around the idea of threshold and transit between points of interest. I have made the sky space view the focused vista of this project with the underground depressed courtyard. The procession to this compresses you and controls light in an anticipatory manner repeating small slivers of light that keep you moving toward the light washed and considerably less compressed courtyard. I am dealing with compression and enlightenmnet and how the repression of certain senses and infromation of a space can give you a certain perception that may be different from the reality of that space. This is much of what Turrell does in his experiential art pieces. I am mimicking this language and phenomenon in the design of this space.

The entirety of this quarter has taught me a lot about what the goal of architecture truly is. At the end of the day Architecture is about people and making an experience that is relatable to the human,as it is their space to inhabit. Before coming to this class I was hooked highly on the form of the building rather than the experience that happens and takes place within these spaces. Through looking back and tracking all of my design decisions this quarter to a specific experience or function, I have been able to create spaces that are relevant and non-ambiguous. I could not be happier this quarter with the space that I created and the design implications that it has on people that are to inhabit the space. Time management did become an issue this quarter and I know that the more projects I do, the more self discipline I will be able to gain in completing projects in a timely manner.

CONCEPT My project deals with the work of James Turrell in creating a live work and exhibition space that caters specifically to the design language of the artist. The artist looks to light as being his main medium and therefore in his exhibition space I am using the qualities of light and space to create repression and enlightenment in the viewers on their way to experiencing Turrell’s work.
