Atmospheres
This research was triggered by one question: how can the conscious and the unconscious minds generate an experiential atmosphere? Within the frame of this question two main reflections were explored: one referring to the paradoxical way in which an individual experience can become a collective one without losing its personal approach. And second, the multi-layered character of space in which physical encounters performative and filmic, and its possible interaction for the generation of atmospheres.

This video installation was shown as the final representative part of the Master Research Project ‘Multi-layered Atmospheres’ developed over the course of two years within the frame of the Master in Scenography. It explores the study of the different consciousness layers and its spatial perception. The visual and conceptual material was collected through two main stages: one related to the study of my own unconscious side through my dreams and the other one connected to an exploration of the city as the stage of the waking hours (the ‘conscious’ side). This experimentation with my dream´s material and the imagery taken from the city, led to a space where the dreaming and the waking hours encounter each other in an attempt to merge the different layers composing ‘reality’.

This installation was developed as part of a spatial and aesthetic exploration related to the concept of the ´Shadow´archetype proposed by Carl Jung. After some visual experimentation with the collected material from my personal dream´s diary and the imagery collected from the city, I selected one of the dreams that reflects my perception of the ‘Shadow’ archetype concept and the visual material connected to it. This material was used on different try outs to generate a spatial experience. Different objects and compositions were explored to create a specific atmosphere that could show the merge of the image from the dream and the material collected from the city.
´The meeting with oneself is, at first, the meeting with one´s own shadow. The shadow is a tight passage, a narrow door, whose painful constriction no one is spared who goes down to the deep well.’ -Carl Jung-

The Doors
Experiment
Video Installation
The research about ‘Multi-layered Atmospheres’ began with a question regarding the relationship between the introspective world of a human being and how it gets reflected in space. As a way to explore this connection I decided to make videos of my current environment (Utrecht, The Netherlands) as well as videos from my native city (Quito, Ecuador) and connect both of them in a filmic collage.
Research: Multi-layered Atmospheres Location: Utrecht - The Netherlands School: Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (HKU) Date: May 2016 Tutors: Henny Dorr Tjallien Walma van der Molen
This collage was presented in an installation together with another collage made of pictures of doors. The collage of doors was the symbolic idea of an entrance to my mind and was also related to a previous study on architectural skins, and the video represented my inner world connected to both my current environment and my thoughts about my country.

and Visual Arts
The performing and visual arts center is located in Machachi, Ecuador. The concept of the project is based on the strengthening of the city´s identity and its population, but also the development and preservation of the cultural and natural heritage. The main conflict that the project analyses and pretend to solve is the progressive loss of the rich heritage of the city that is caused by the vulnerable identity of its habitants. Therefore, the architectonical object was designed based on the statement of “ the enhancement of the city´s cultural and natural heritage in order to encourage the development of the most vulnerable population which would improve their life´s quality.”

The main strategy used to design the urban plan was to develop a circuit that connects inherited stations represented by different projects. The leading purpose of the project is to provide and educative space for children and disabled people in the specific subject of performative and visual arts.

The axis of the architectonical program is the arts school, but is complemented by the public spaces like the theater and the cinema. The program of the project is divided in four areas: educative, exhibition, meeting and health. These areas are connected by an empty space (courtyard) that crosses the building vertically, not only relating all the spaces visually, but also providing light and air to them, which are basic elements in architecture. page 31

The main urban and architectonic strategy used against insecurity during the design process of this academic project was the rehabilitation and improvement of the public space through the generation of an artistic, permeable, welcoming place where the users would be able to enhance their skills through different kinds of artistic and technical workshops, but also to invigorate a public environment where safety is created through a dynamic cohabitation of the space. The place found to develop this project is an abandoned house with a significant historic value. The proposal is to rehabilitate this space enhancing its spatial heritage, but also to connect it to the city through an open green space where the activities encouraged through the workshops will stimulate a cultural and artistic exchange.

Agricultural
Research and
Academic Project
This design project was developed within the frame of an academic workshop focused on the relationship between architecture and place. The place, in this case, is a small town in the Ecuadorian highlands where the main activity is agricultural production. The program includes educative spaces to encourage agricultural research, spaces for the production of local products and a place of commercialization. The main design strategy is based on maintaining continuous green fields while generating spaces for the research practice: both outdoors and indoors. Therefore, the diagram used to design the architecture was the continuity of both empty spaces and built ones allowing a connection between the different activities and a feeling of openness around the building and the external spaces.

About translating a narrative into an abstract space... Within the frame of fiction, four theater plays were taken, with different characteristics, and by analyzing them, I translated their core reflection into an abstract space represented through a scale model.

About a possible narrative through the skin of the space... That body that both divides and connects our interior world to the exterior that surrounds us, acts as a filter of thousands of emotions, ideas, thoughts, fears; etc, but also it remains as a trace of the passage of all these sensations going through. In the same way, space acts as an archival of our personal and collective stories. This what can be called ‘the architectural skins’ is a material reflection of the passage of time and can act as a physical representation of our memories. page 53
