The Bon Secours mission “to provide compassionate, quality healthcare services to those in need, including the poor and dying, for the purpose of alleviating human suffering and bringing people to wholeness in the midst of pain and loss, establishes the framework for this proposal. Based on current research on the healing effects of landscape and gardens, as well as studies that document the beneficial effects of recognizable building types on vulnerable populations, and the massive body of evidence that identifies the health benefits of social interaction and physical activity, this proposal positions the new hospital along Kingsley Lane fronting a new town center that serves the neighborhood, city and region. Section through Main Boulevard
Fresh markets, restaurants, and shops line the new boulevard that links the proposed hospital with a neighborhood scale, landmark pavilion. Medical office buildings, housing and shops form the edges of tree-lined sidewalks and streetscapes. Along Ridgley Road, the hospital offers a contemplative green with nature walks, a chapel garden, and a pastoral face to the residential neighbors. The language of the hospital architecture looks to the history of the site, the nineteenth century St. Vincent DePaul Hospital, as well as the forms and materials of Norfolk. The central atrium introduces light to every floor assuring access to daylight for patients, staff and visitors and providing a central identifiable space to enable easy navigability. The tower can be seen at a distance so that the hospital is restored to its position as an important civic landmark. The town center around the hospital supports its role as a regional destination.
