El Museo Miniatura Guayaquil en la Historia recrea diferentes espacios de la ciudad. En la gráfica, la parte posterior del Hemiciclo de La Rotonda.

Hay mucho por trabajar en Guayaquil. No tenemos suficientes sitios de jerarquía para la visitación turística, pero se está trabajando en ello. Por ejemplo, tenemos que ubicar restaurantes al filo del río para desarrollar esa parte mucho más. Otro producto ancla es Las Peñas, Puerto Santa Ana. Debemos trabajar con la historia de la ciudad: que los guías conozcan mejor sobre esto. Mientras surfeaba por Chirije (Manabí), encontré unas piezas arqueológicas con una antigüedad de 2.000 a 3.000 años. Quedé intrigado pero dejé pasar el tiempo y me dediqué a otras cosas. Luego fui a Estados Unidos a estudiar Acuicultura; ayudé a mi madre en la camaronera y me involucré en la exportación de jaibas. Me fue tan bien con eso, que exportaba al comisariato del Congreso de Estados Unidos, y, en la fiesta de inauguración de George Bush, las jaibas ecuatorianas fueron el plato principal. En 1994, Sixto Durán Ballén manifestó su deseo de armar el primer bosquejo de lo que hoy es el Ministerio de Turismo, y fue por su consejo que decidimos invertir en este campo. Compramos un terreno en Chirije… el mismo lugar en el que había surfeado de joven volvía a mí.

How did you start getting interested in tourism?

While surfing at Chirije (Manabí), I found some archaeological pieces dating back 2000-3000 years. I was intrigued, but I let time pass by and devoted myself to other things. Then I went to The United States to study Aquaculture; I helped my mother with the shrimp company and got involved with the export of crabs. I was doing so well with the business, that I even began exporting to the US Congress, and in the opening party of George Bush, Ecuadorian crabs were the main course. In 1994, Sixto Durán Ballén wished to put together the first draft of what is now the Ministry of Tourism, and it was by his advice that we decided to invest in that field. We bought land in Chirije, the same place where I had surfed at a young age came back to me.

he contacted Olaf Holm, a major Danish-Ecuadorian archaeologist and researcher who revealed that the site had been excavated by Emilio Estrada; he also provided other interesting data about the place. I found many beautiful objects, whole vessels and bowls, objects that for me were invaluable. My archaeologist stage ended when a group of experts informed me that the land where I was doing my expeditions was an ancient burial site.

What were the major achievements as Director of the Joint Tourism Promotion Fund of Ecuador?

The effect we had was something I never imagined. We got to make a campaign with National Geographic, which allowed us to win the TIA (Travel Industry Association of America) for the first time in history. Great achievements came afterwards: covers on the largest tourism fairs in the world, such as ITB Berlin, in 2005 and 2006. We were promoted by stores like Swarovski (brand luxury goods made from cut glass). Our campaigns were in the subway and outside the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid. We were at the World Cup in Germany in which we participated, among other things, with a billboard that read: “We are already here. When will you come to Ecuador?”. We

Cuando tuvimos que ceder el Ministerio de Turismo y dar paso a la nueva Ministra para que continuara con el proceso, me pidieron que me quede ayudando en Guayaquil, acepté y aquí estoy con un nuevo desafío por delante.

We visited the Shuar Center which within its 47.8 ha has three pools of hot and cold water fed by streams that come from the slopes of Cerro Bunke, in the province of Azuay. We enjoyed this natural spa, known to help relieve sore muscles, arthritis and rheumatism.

We took advantage of the visit to get a massage with mud that left our skin renewed and our muscles relaxed. Then we bought some custom crafts made with seeds and other natural materials, and learned about the traditional limpias, which according to ancient beliefs, dispel bad energy.

Llegando a la casa principal, degustamos un piqueo típico: patacones (plátano frito) y jugo de cacao helado, que nos dejó un grato sabor refrescante y despertó nuestro interés por todo lo que nos puede ofrecer esta fruta.

En este sector turístico y agrícola tuvimos una experiencia completa del diario vivir en la comunidad.

Visitamos su hermoso huerto orgánico, provisto de plantas de perejil, col, acelga y espinaca, que perfuman el ambiente. Papa, cebolla blanca y otros productos crecen en la tierra, que se muestra fértil y hermosa. Los árboles de guanto, repletos de orquídeas blancas, amarillas, rosadas y rojas, son un deleite para la vista, especialmente en enero, donde se las puede ver en su mayor esplendor, atrayendo hasta su centro a preciosos colibríes de intensos colores.

Lugares turísticos RESERVA ECOLÓGICA YANACOCHA Yanacocha (laguna negra) es un centro de rescate de fauna silvestre, ubicado en el km 3 de la vía Puyo – Tena. Cuenta con 8 ha de bosque protegido, que guarda en el corazón de la selva una increíble diversidad ecológica (aves, monos, tortugas, caimanes, etc.), paisajes sorprendentes y distintos microclimas que marcan el maravilloso contraste de nuestro territorio.

Desde hace 7 años, en conjunto con la Policía Nacional y el Ministerio de Ambiente, sus miembros se dedican a rescatar, rehabilitar, reinsertar, dar albergue y cuidar a cientos de animales que llegan al sitio en mal estado. Luchan contra la caza y la tenencia ilegal de especies –en su mayoría en peligro de extinción– que luego de su estadía en este recinto son reinstalados en su hábitat natural.

Germán Flores Rea, encargado de la reserva, nos cuenta que, a diferencia de otros lugares, los animales son cuidados dentro de jaulas totalmente naturales, con las características necesarias para simular en lo posible las condiciones reales de su

Tourist places YANACOCHA ECOLOGICAL RESERVE Yanacocha (Black Lagoon) is a rescue center for wildlife, located at km 3 of the road Puyo - Tena.

It has 8 ha of protected forest, which keeps in the heart of the jungle an incredible ecological diversity (birds, monkeys, turtles, alligators, etc.), striking landscapes and different microclimates that mark the wonderful contrast of our territory.

For 7 years, in conjunction with the National Police and the Ministry of Environment, its members have dedicated to rescue, rehabilitate, reintegrate, providing shelter and care for hundreds of animals that come to the site in bad conditions. They fight against

poaching and illegal possession of species, most of them in danger of extinction. After their stay at the rescue center, they are reinstated in their natural habitat.

Germán Flores Rea, manager of the rescue center, tells us that, unlike other places, animals are kept in 100% natural cages, with the necessary characteristics to simulate actual conditions of their environment for future release.

Many of these creatures could be seen walking beside him, thus demonstrating that the harmonious coexistence between man and animals is possible.

PARQUE ETNOBOTÁNICO OMAERE Luego de caminar unos 200 m por

el sendero del Paseo Turístico del Río Puyo, llegamos a las puertas de uno de los primeros parques etnobotánicos de Latinoamérica, hogar de una surtida colección de plantas, árboles y arbustos utilizados por las comunidades indígenas por sus propiedades curativas.

A little over 50 km from the city of Macas, in the province of Morona Santiago, is the Samikin waterfall, part of one of the shuar communities in the Taisha canton.

ara llegar a este importante destino turístico del Ecuador, la aventura comienza con una vista majestuosa del verde frondoso de la Amazonía. Apreciamos un paisaje exuberante, a medida que el camino se va acercando a las montañas, subiendo y bajando algunas lomas, cruzando ríos poco profundos, en contacto con las altas paredes rocosas adornadas por moradas orquídeas silvestres, mientras una ligera neblina nos envuelve y respiramos aire puro, sintiéndonos en un verdadero paraíso terrenal.

A los lados del camino, no muy cercanas entre sí, encontramos muchas casas que conservan su construcción tradicional: techos de hoja de palma y paredes de madera. Conocida como la esmeralda del Oriente, Macas es una urbe activa, con un gran teatro y la iglesia coronando el paisaje en lo alto de una pequeña cuesta.

Un paseo por sus calles adoquinadas permite un encuentro con sus tiendas, restaurantes y quioscos, donde se puede apreciar las más coloridas artesanías del Amazonas, como llaveros, servilleteros y otros utensilios hechos con madera de balsa pintada; además, fina bisutería trabajada con chaquiras, semillas y plumas.

Al visitar estos lugares vimos a los papagayos y sus alegres colores, a los monos realizando sus malabares, al gran jaguar mostrando sus dientes, a las boas longitudinales, a las pavas en sus carreras, entre otros, y presenciamos la convivencia de especies, por ejemplo, entre los tapir y los puma de misteriosa mirada.
