ART GALLERY STUDIOS The project took place at an abandoned structure near the Circunvalar Avenue in Bogota. This avenue runs through the city’s hills, giving the place a special setting. On the one hand, it has a great view of the city. On the other, the regular flow of cars generates noise. The original structure consisted of two blocks where a program including an art gallery, painter studios and living quarters needed to be incorporated. The block closest to the avenue was chosen to be the gallery, a closed volume protected from the exterior. The western block, with a view of the city, was developed as the studio and living quarters. Different aspects of natural lighting and temperature control were taken into account with each space. The studios are warm and well lit; while the gallery’s indirect sunlight protects the artwork.

This project’s design was inspired in the organic architecture theory of Hans Scharoun and his work. More specifically, the theater in the city of Wolfsburg and his housing projects were analyzed. The result is a reinterpretation of the theory and the creation of a specially designed house that revolves around not only the technical requirements, but also a more interesting theoretical background. The house is located in Bogota’s savanna, on a flat terrain with the eastern hills of the city as the background, and woods surrounding the area. For this reason the shape of this construction is horizontal to respond to the existing landscape. It is meant for a big family, where the form of the house revolves around the use of each space, and there is a visual relationship between each other. The chimney is located in the middle of the social area, as the home’s central and focal point. The rooms, being private quarters, are more distant from the public areas.

HOTEL S T U D E N T RESIDENCE Bogota’s downtown is a place where much activity meets great use. The intersection between Caracas Avenue and 26th Street is an interesting junction, for its roads unite the cultural, educational, and economic centers of the city with El Dorado Airport and the northern part of the city. Following an urban analysis of the sector, a multi-purpose project was proposed. A large scale student residence responds to the great number of universities in the surroundings; a hotel responds to the service’s demand in the area; and a commercial platform supports the previous uses and supplies all the services needed. The student residence is located north of the platform on a gyrated building of great height, which recognizes the sun exposition of the building and profile of the street. The hotel and long-stay accommodation are distributed between two towers connected through a bridge, where the communal services of both buildings are located. The commercial platform unites the three buildings and forms a central plaza that connects the complex to the neighboring buildings and the plaza adjacent to the project.

The project was designed from a detailed analysis of Alvaro Siza Vieira’s work and appropriation of his architecture concepts. The museum is located in the city center, and consists of 2 parts in equilibrium. The first block contains the public spaces: a library and a café bar. The second one contains a volume for exhibition rooms and a horseshoe- shaped auditorium. The auditorium becomes a large cylinder that intersects the empty space left by the horseshoe. These two parts are connected by a semicircular volume acting as a juncture, and being the midpoint between the two it becomes the entrance to the building. The project used various elements of Alvaro Siza’s style and architecture language along with its form of representation. Within these elements, for example, is the suggestion of spatial continuity, the use of cylindrical skylights, the appearance of a baseboard at certain points, the generation of anthropomorphic analogies on the facades and the perception of the building as a large, white, solid volume.

The exercise involved developing an emergency housing project for the depressed area of Quilmes (near the city of Buenos Aires). The purpose of the project was to mitigate the impact of floods experienced by the area during the winter season that affect low-income population of the area. The prototype is an inflatable house that responds to the local community’s needs. Three different types of modules were developed. They can be assembled in different ways to accommodate different families’ needs. All modules have a bed, while varying whether they have a window, a wall and a door, or storage space. The modules are designed to be deflated and folded back on themselves and onto a platform to be self-contained, when not in use. When inflated, the base lifts from the ground to prevent damage and isolate the occupants from the cold and animals.

The project is located in the southern dock of the city of Buenos Aires. The area is currently a port and industrial area with the potential for urban renovation and the development of high-rise housing and urban facilities. The museum is inserted into a park belonging to this renovation, near the Río de la Plata. The project consists of a series of interconnected volumes, which contain the various parts of the program. Two parallel bars with exhibition halls, and a volume across with the public areas of the museum: the library and the cafeteria. These volumes make up the central space of the main hall, which is based on a principle of open space, where closed spaces are arranged as hermetic boxes, floating within space. Access to the museum is given by a ramp that sinks into the ground like a dark cave. When reaching the main hall, the dark cave-like space becomes open and fully illuminated. The museum blends with the landscape and is mounted atop the Rio de la Plata as a extension of the park’s terrain, creating a green roof; a large piece of public space over the river.

CONVIVE II The CONVIVE contest is done annually between the country’s schools of architecture. This contest promotes proposals that improve the habitat of the poorest places in the Colombia. In this instance, the theme was a social project in the city of Quibdó, Chocó. It had to include new urban planning, zonal planning, a general architectonic proposal and a housing proposal. The project is located in the outskirts of the city in the middle of the rain forest. The proposed urban plan contemplates the Circunvalar Avenue along with the streams and waterfalls as ecological corridors connecting the project with the city center. This link tries to recover the streams and unify the city, which is currently disaggregated by the geographical features and local vegetation. The housing complex is proposed in a radial structure that takes advantage of the terrain’s slope and creates large spaces between the housing blocks, while preserving the local vegetation. The proposed zones for the neighboring constructed sub-superficial wetlands alleviate the city’s lack of a proper aqueduct and sewage system. Three types of housing are included in the proposal. They vary according lighting conditions of the location. The housing’s simple display is based on a reinterpretation of the traditional living quarters of the region, along with bioclimatic concepts pertinent the local climate.

FUCHA RIVER E C O L O G ICAL WETLAND PARK One of the most serious problems in the city of Bogota, is the loss its rivers to the collection of waste waters. The worst situation can be found in the industrial areas within the city. In these areas, waste is directly discharged into water streams, visibly contaminating them. It is then necessary to remind the people of Bogota of its former ecological structure. The project is located on the banks of the Fucha river, one of the three most important rivers in Bogota. The river is included in the city’s urban planning as an ecological link between the city’s Eastern Mountain Range and Bogota River to the West. The park then becomes a point of attraction, helps shape the corridor, and weaves the fabric of the city’s public areas. The river currently acts as a physical boundary between new residential area and an established industrial area. The park then serves a dual function: first to serve as a place of recreation and service provider for the new population, and second to mitigate the impact of the industrial area and remind the Bogotanos of the fact that for thousands of years, Bogotá was a region filled with wetlands. The park is designed from a sustainable city concept. Therefore functions as a natural treatment plant for waste water produced by industrial areas on a daily basis. The water surface forms a constructed surface flow wetland and the northern area of the park a sub surface flow one. These wetlands receive the polluted water, process it and return clean water to the Fucha River. The project thus creates environmental awareness, and performs a specific action that benefits the entire city.

R O G E L I O S A LMONA IN BOGOTA:

Rogelio Salmona may be the most important Colombian architect of the past decades, and most of his work is located in Bogota city. For this reason, the research intends to create a publication where his work becomes accessible to everybody, and not just the architectural community. The research analyses Salmona’s work from different points of view. On the urban side, it relates the buildings with the city’s expansion, showing their development process and relation. On the architectural side, it makes both a qualitative and a quantitative analysis to demonstrate how Salmona’s work benefits the city by donating a great percentage of public space to it. The publication is a work in progress, that is meant to be understood mainly through graphics. Some of them are included in this portfolio. The publication will be finished around December 2011. The final product is a book that shows and analyses 20 of Salmona’s projects of free public access, which can easily be visited.

 The POZN consists in the planned expansion of Bogota towards the savanna. The project seeks to avoid the trend of uncontrolled growth that has usually happened in the city, as the northern area represents the last piece of land left for expansion within the city limits. The feasibility study consists in the pre design and later budget of the main roads, secondary roads and public space of the project. The design follows all the city’s current public space regulations. So far the first stage of development of the project has been designed. All the work has been done in group, inside the projects office of the Urban Development Institute. However, my contribution has been mostly concerned with the landscaping design of the project. In this regard, the project’s design has sought to articulate the main ecological structure of the city, and to give each road an identity through landscaping.

The project is located in the San Cristobal Hill in the city of Santiago. The idea of the contest is to reassert the importance of wine as the national symbol of Chile, through a major urban action. The proposal puts the museum within a trench across the mountain and creates a link between the city’s north and south. There are various exhibition halls along the route, evoking different senses from the materials: Smell, touch, taste, sight and hearing come into full immersion in the project. It elicits the idea of a cava as a grotto and man’s intervention of land to cultivate wine.
