Dear CAM Members, On behalf of myself, our 2019 Chairman Kevin Foucher of Commercial Contracting Corporation, the CAM Board of Directors and staff, we wish all of you a very happy and prosperous New Year. Can you believe we are moving into a new decade? It seems like 2010 was yesterday and we were struggling to recover from the Great Recession. The years that followed looked very different – the dramatic comeback and period of growth broke economic records. Construction in Michigan, and particularly in Detroit, experienced a renaissance. Looking forward, national forecasts have total U.S. construction starts declining 4% from 2019 levels. Economic growth is slowing but is not anticipated to contract next year. The commercial/industrial sectors showing the largest gains in 2020 are public works, education and healthcare. While we look forward to a new year filled with great possibilities, we also look back at the various accomplishments that CAM has made in 2019 to benefit the CAM Membership. 208 new members joined CAM in 2019, proving our membership benefits continue to offer the best ROI in the industry. Making the most out of your membership includes utilizing the discount programs we have negotiated on your behalf. In addition to our relationships with UPS, Staples and Sunoco, we have added a new vendor to our list. Through a partnership with Hoekstra Transportation, members can now save up to $5K on the purchase of Sprinter Cargo Vans. Visit the CAM Website and click on Member Benefits for more information on all of the programs. Join us for one of our networking events: the list includes the Men’s Doubles Classic Bowling Event, an afternoon bowling league, four summer golf outings, two sporting clay shoots, a European pheasant hunt, a Tigers’ opening day tailgate, a summer Dream Cruise event and picnic, a VIP party followed by a Tigers game and the annual Building Connections fundraiser benefiting the Boy Scouts Great Lakes Field Council. Network, meet new people, build your client list – get involved! Our new Power Up events have been a huge success. Commercial Contracting Corporation hosted one in October and Auch Construction in November. Our next Power Up event is planned for March at The Christman Company. Check the schedule on our website. In June, CAM, and the HBA of Southeastern Michigan, presented the ninth annual Mid-Year Economic Forecast and State of the Industry Breakfast. Held at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, more than 200 people attended the breakfast. Look for the tenth annual CAM/HBA Mid-Year Economic Forecast and State of the Industry Breakfast to be held on June 24th, 2020. In September, CAM was featured on WJR Radio’s “Building Michigan Show,” hosted by Ken Rogulski. The hour-long program presented segments on our association, workforce development, The Michigan Construction Payment Act and some cool projects in Detroit. Thank you to Kevin Foucher, Sam Ruegsegger, Erik Wordhouse, Jason Wadaga and Dwight Hooks for appearing. We have another show airing on WJR, Tuesday, January 21st from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., be sure to tune-in! Speaking of industry promotion, be sure to watch Detroit Public Television on Friday night, January 31st. CAM will be hosting a pledge event to honor the 40th Anniversary of the popular show This Old House. We will have a team of CAM Members answering pledge phones and will have live interviews promoting our trade show, the Great Lakes Design and Construction Expo, taking place on February 12th and 13th at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. Back in 2018 we held our inaugural CAM Client Council meeting in an effort to provide an open forum of information sharing between contractors and owners. Discussion topics included best practices, benchmarking, project delivery and the promotion of Workforce Recruitment, development and educational opportunities. Building off the success of that meeting, a second meeting was held later in the year. In 2019, the Council hosted a meeting and tour during MI Career Quest Southeast. The event, in which CAM participated, featured innovative hands-on career exploration experiences for thousands of high school students. More meetings and events are planned for the CAM Client Council in 2020. Throughout 2019, the CAM Newsroom worked hard at bringing CAM members new bidding opportunities, closing out the year with more than 150 projects in the design phase and over 7,000 actively bidding reported projects. The CAM Newsroom is looking forward to making 2020 a stellar year for CAM, and for the Newsroom subscribers. The most widely used construction directory in the state, the CAM Construction Buyers Guide is now available in a mobile app. Visit the app store and download the CAM Buyers Guide or visit www.cambuyersguide.com to search for qualified contractors, suppliers, architects and engineers throughout Michigan. Going strong since 1936, the Buyers Guide provides useful information, and remains a specialized marketing tool for CAM Members. CAM’s Training and Education Center (CAMTEC) conducted 57 classes in 2019 and assisted over 600 students with their educational and safety needs. CAMTEC regularly develops custom programming to assist our members either at the training center or on the jobsite. In 2019, CAM worked with Premier Executive Forums to develop phase 2 of our CAM Leadership Academy. We will be offering the CAM Advanced Leadership Academy in March 2020. There is no pre-requisite to attend this course as it is intended for senior level managers. The program does include some virtual training modules and the DISC assessment for those parties who did not attend the Leadership Academy course. Call today to enroll. In May, CAM and MIOSHA renewed their alliance. CAM has had a long-standing alliance with the agency to promote the dialogue of safety and health throughout Michigan. CAMSafety’s advising and consulting continue to be the gold-standard in our industry. CAM’s Labor Relations Program continues to grow as our union contractors realize the quality and extent of the assistance available. This year, the department assisted contractors in contract negotiations with our friends at the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters Local 687. During calendar year 2019, the CAM Government Affairs Committee (GAC) closely monitored and actively advanced CAM’s position on issues like Workforce Development and the push for prompt pay legislation. The CAM GAC has drafted and submitted for consideration by our State legislators what we hope will become Michigan’s first prompt pay legislation (Michigan Construction Payment Act) for private-sector construction projects, joining the majority of other states that have previously enacted similar legislation. The three partners who help us service our membership – CAM Benefit Program (CBP), CAM Workers’ Compensation Program (CAMComp) and Construction Federal Credit Union (CFCU) – continue to drive member value. In July, the CAM Benefit Program was acquired by Priority Health Managed Benefits, Inc. Priority is Michigan’s second-largest health insurance carrier and offers a wealth of experience, products and tools. We are excited to offer great new products at competitive pricing. CAMComp’s new rate structure and industry-leading safety programs allow us to control risk and mitigate loses, resulting in larger dividends back to participants. Notching up the level of service for our members, CFCU has a new and enhanced website that now offers mobile banking and remote deposit capture. In closing, I encourage all of you to join us at the Great Lakes Design and Construction Expo 2020 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi on February 12th and 13th. The 134th CAM Annual Meeting Luncheon will take place on Wednesday, February 12th at 11:30 pm. This year’s keynote is Mark Wallace, president and CEO of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. This year’s tradeshow will be jointly produced with the Home Builders Association of Southeastern Michigan. The show will feature extended hours, over 250 booths, increased exhibit space, 40-foot ceilings, educational programming and an Economic Forecast Breakfast on Thursday. You won’t want to miss this MEGA show! Tradeshow hours are Wednesday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information and to register, go to: miconstructionexpo.com. Happy New Year! One Industry. One Resource. One CAM

CAM Member Companies Selected as Top Workplaces for 2019 More than a dozen CAM member companies made the list of the Detroit Free Press Top Workplaces for 2019. The Free Press partnered with Philadelphiabased Energage, an employee research and culture technology firm, to determine the top workplaces. The rankings are based solely on employee survey feedback that is then analyzed based on Energage's objective criteria. The list is broken out into three categories: Large Top Workplaces (more than 500 Michigan employees), Midsize Top Workplaces (150-499 Michigan
employees), and Small Top Workplaces (50-149 Michigan employees). CAM member companies on the Large Top Workplaces list include: Plante Moran (#4) and Alta Equipment Company (#25). On the Midsize Top Companies list: Sachse Construction (#8), Commercial Contracting Corp. (#21), Kapnick Insurance Group (#33), Aristeo Construction (#34), and Ghafari Associates (#38). On the Small Top Companies list: Tegrit (#15), Metropolitan Concrete (#22), DeMaria Building Co. (#23), AUCH (#28), Novara Tesija & Catenacci (#29), Giffels Webster (#32), Kasco Inc. (#36), R.L. Deppman Co. (#53), O’Brien Construction Co. (#54), and Spalding DeDecker Associates (#57). Also, United Shore Mortgage took the #2 spot on the Large Top Workplaces list — the company’s new headquarters in Pontiac earned a spot in CAM Magazine’s Special Issue 2019 for being one of the most outstanding construction projects of the year (with CAM member companies Integrated Design Solutions as architect and The Dailey Company as General Contractor).
Michigan Ranked a Top State for Business Tax Climate This year, Michigan again ranked among the top states for doing business, this time coming in 12th in the Tax Foundation’s 2020 State Business Tax Climate Index. Up five spots from last year, Michigan is one of only two states in the Midwest to be in the top half of the rankings. Combined with a cost of living that is 10 percent below the national average, Michigan has repeatedly earned its reputation as a business-friendly state, according to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). Designed to show how well states structure their tax systems, the Tax Climate Index is based on five 10 CAM MAGAZINE JANUARY 2020
components including individual income tax, sales tax, corporate income tax, property tax and unemployment insurance tax. Compared to 2019, Michigan showed most improvement in the the unemployment insurance tax component, moving up 32 spots to #17. The state also rose up 10 spots in the rankings for sales tax from #19 to #9. “The business environment we have created here in Michigan, including a favorable tax climate, provides a recipe for success as companies are looking to expand their operations here in the state,” Josh Hundt, MEDC’s Executive Vice President and Chief Business Development Officer. “From a competitive cost of doing business – reaffirmed by this most recent Business Tax Climate Index ranking –to a high quality of life that still costs 10 percent less than the national average, Michigan is making a compelling case for growth.” 50 percent of the ranking is based on a survey of corporate site selectors (Executive Survey). For the executive survey rank, Michigan improved seven spots, indicating an increasingly positive experience for site selectors doing business in Michigan. In the survey, participants were asked to rank the states based on their recent experience of locating facilities in them. And Michigan was recently ranked #4 nationally on the list of top states for manufacturing employment in Business Facilities 15th annual Rankings Report, and was recognized for its excellence in economic development by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) with five IEDC Excellence in Economic Development Awards. documents was made available on the AIA Contract Document’s website on November 15, 2019. The CMa documents will be released on February 6, 2020. CMcs are brought on in the beginning of the preconstruction phase of a project to provide collaboration and input, which allows for greater efficiency from project inception. They also perform the construction. The AIA Documents Committee received input from representatives of major CMc firms to update the CMc documents. Substantive changes that were made to the CMc documents include greater flexibility to establish the CMc’s preconstruction phase services, and a provision permitting the parties to agree on startup of some of the work before execution of the guaranteed maximum price (GMP) amendment. Documents A133 and A134 each have a new Insurance and Bonds Exhibit. Additionally, a Sustainable Projects Exhibit, E234-2019, has been developed to incorporate the CMc into a sustainable project. The AIA Documents Committee also met with industry representatives to obtain input for updating the Construction Manager as Adviser (CMa) documents. In this model, the CMa provides preconstruction phase collaboration but does not provide the construction. Documents for this model are intended to be used on projects where more than one contractor is used, but can also be used if there is only one contractor. The CMa provides coordination of the contractors and other services in the construction phase. Revisions to these documents include expansion of the CMa’s scope to include more review and analysis, in addition to coordination and management. AIA documents can be purchased with an unlimited-use annual license or as a single, customizable document. AIA contract documents are also available as single, non-editable documents and as paper versions through some AIA Visit us online at www.BuildwithCAM.com

OSHA Issues Proposed Rule on Changes to Beryllium Standards for Construction The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently placed on public inspection a proposal to protect workers in shipyards and construction from beryllium exposure by more appropriately tailoring the requirements of the standards to the exposures in these industries. The proposal ensures consistency with the general industry standard where appropriate based on a July 2017 final rule clarifying certain requirements with respect to materials containing only trace amounts of beryllium. The proposed changes would maintain safety and health protections for workers, while facilitating compliance with the standards, and yielding some cost savings. Safety Tool Kit CONTROLLING NOISE IN THE WORKPLACE
By Jason Griffin CAM DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION AND SAFETY SERVICES
n the December edition of CAM Magazine, we discussed the importance of identifying sources and monitoring for noise. In this article, we will be looking at the engineering controls and programs that employers can use to assist them in reducing the overall noise level in their workplaces. The engineering controls that we will be discussing are examples and should be considered as educational only. Some of the control methods discussed will involve the modification of equipment and should only be done with the coordination and guidance of the equipment or tool manufacturer. Engineering controls are methods that eliminate or control a particular hazard through isolation, equipment modification, environmental surfacing, buying quieter tools and a variety of other methods. Since our workforce is highly mobile, buying quieter tools and equipment or modifying the equipment to run quieter are ways that we can reduce exposure. To assist employers with selecting quieter equipment, NIOSH introduced the “Buy Quiet Program,” which includes information and infographics on noise levels produced by a variety of equipment. Another method to control noise is to modify existing equipment to isolate parts that emit noise. This can be achieved with noise dampening materials to absorb or minimize vibration resulting in a quieter piece of equipment. An example of these types of modifications can be found on MIOSHA’s website for saw blades, stamping presses, and screw machines. Some examples of controls that modify equipment could include using sound dampening materials, sound deadening enclosures for equipment, use of mufflers or exhaust ports, wrapping pipes or ducts, use of turning vanes in pipes and ducts to reduce turbulence, and locating equipment away from hard reflective surfaces. Another resource to assist employers with implementing engineering controls is published by the World Health Organization and is titled “Occupational Exposure to Noise: Evaluation, Prevention and Control.” This publication is more technical in nature and delves into the science, math, and function of a variety of noise controls. As a technical document, this is material that a qualified person such as an engineer or certified industrial hygienist could use to evaluate and design an engineering control specific to the environment in which they or their employees are working. Another method of control is to consider the environment in which the employees are working. OSHA’s Technical Manual, Section III Chapter 5, addresses occupational noise. In this chapter, OSHA defines the differences between a free field and a reverberant field (See Figures 4 & 5 taken from the manual) and explains how each works.

It also explains that most work environments will typically consist of an environment that is somewhere between the clean examples shown above. Additionally, the diagrams above show sound travelling through air. We must also consider that sound can travel through objects as vibration or through conduction. When working in environments similar to what is shown above, we must consider how we might modify the environment to reduce noise. For example, in the reverb field shown in figure 5, we could consider the design of the walls and ceilings to control noise. There are a variety of acoustical materials that can be used to clad ceilings and walls that are designed to either break-up the noise waves or to absorb some of the pressure to minimize noise transmission. We can also use isolation pads, springs, and other methods to assist with the reduction of vibration introduced into the floor system - this will reduce conduction through the building frame. In summary, there are a variety of options available to employers to implement engineering controls to reduce occupational noise exposures. The goal is Visit us online at www.BuildwithCAM.com
to reduce those exposures as much as possible prior to implementing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as plugs or muffs. In the March edition of CAM Magazine, we will be exploring the use of PPE and the topics of individual fit testing and selection by a competent person. Net Zero Build Summit at the Showplace in Novi: A Construction Industry First
By Douglas Elbinger, Elbinger Energy Solutions, LLC

ou are invited to attend the first large-scale Midwest conference dedicated to best practices in zero energy and zero carbon construction
The timing couldn’t be better. The NetZero Build Summit 2020 brings together the key stakeholders involved in the Midwest’s value chain for net zero construction in residential and commercial buildings for the very first time. Hosting more than 250 leading architects, policymakers, contractors, system manufacturers, building owners and real estate executives, this new conference is a unique opportunity to access the latest in green building expertise and to identify suppliers to help deliver sustainable, energy-efficient construction and renovation projects. The Net Zero Build Summit has been designed to facilitate networking with the sustainable build community and allow the latest projects to be showcased. This is your opportunity to connect and learn from the nation’s best and brightest in the construction industry supporting energy efficient and sustainable construction. Looking back, it seems the construction industry takes its time about innovation. The Net Zero Build Summit is an indication that is about to change. Not since the invention of drywall and the use of battery-powered tools on the job has there been such a shift in focus ... to energy performance in construction using sustainable materials. Driven by growing consumer demand and technical innovation, net zero building (NZB), once a barely visible niche for daredevil architects, builders, and contractors, has now sprung onto the main stage and is taking the spotlight. Take a breath and understand that not all buildings are going to be truly net zero ...but they can be close. The Net Zero Build Summit reveals how the construction industry supply chain, both residential and commercial, is adopting and headed in that direction.

Opportunity Knocks You have already noticed the move toward a future where sustainability and rising energy costs play an increasingly important role in the design, development and construction of our built environment. We see that the concept of net zero buildings is gaining momentum in the architectural industry, the wider material supply chain, and, of course, with facility owners and project developers. The agenda of the NetZero Build Summit has been designed to engage thoughtprovoking discussions between all of these relevant partners and to provide the knowledge base and contacts to deliver innovative and economically practical NZB projects. Is the Market Ready for Net-Zero? A recent Yahoo! Real Estate poll found that 50 percent of 1,545 U.S. adults surveyed said being “green” is a requirement of their “dream” home. Should you be watching this market trend? Although not necessarily net-zero by definition, residential “green” construction has skyrocketed from 2 percent of new homes in 2005 to 28 percent of new homes in 2017, according to a McGraw Hill market survey report. The same report found that 61 percent of home buyers and renters are willing to pay more for homes that are energy-efficient and that have other green features. Although the number of actual net zero and near net zero building is still rather small, it is gaining traction in all areas of the country. What Can You Expect to Take Away from the NetZero Build Summit? First, you will be ahead of the curve! Just adding more insulation is only small a part of the solution. Net zero energy is achieved by diligent (some say fanatic) attention to details on both energy reduction and energy production. Thus, a high degree of energy efficiency being drawn into the plans at the outset is at the core of zero-energy projects. The goal is to “tighten the envelope” to minimize the HVAC loads and improve air quality. Net zero building designs are so energy efficient that a conventional gas fired furnace is not required. a net zero energy building is one that produces as much energy as it consumes each year — the “net” referring to the annual balance between energy production and energy consumption. What Are the Opportunities in Sustainable Residential Construction? One of the featured speakers, architect Michael Klement, a leading expert in net zero construction will lead panel discussions to examine these issues and many more, like: • Calculating the real value of investing in sustainable residential building projects • Maximizing the energy performance of residential buildings by pairing envelope upgrades with efficient HVAC systems
• How smart technologies can be used to transform a house into an ecohome • The benefits of using energy modelling tools to further reduce and project total energy use in homes • Where low-carbon building materials (e.g. with a high-recycled content) can be procured to increase climate control efficiency and reduce embodied carbon emissions • Multifamily buildings represent a large share of the existing building stock in metropolitan areas and present a prime opportunity to improve sustainability - how developers and building owners can capitalize on this opportunity
Michigan-based architect Michael Klement, one of the foremost authorities on NetZero construction will lead the discussion on the feasibility of net zero residential construction.

*Note on terminology. In non-technical contexts, many practitioners are migrating to the more conversational term “zero energy.” I have seen net zero energy (NZE), zero net energy, (ZNE) and zero energy (ZE) used interchangeably. In either case, it just means a building that is constructed to use a minimal amount of energy and have solar or other renewable means to provide the balance. The other terms, “near net zero” and “ZE Ready” are interchangeable terms that indicate highperformance buildings that just need to add solar and or batteries to balance the energy load.

AIA - MI DESIGN PERSPECTIVES
AN ADAPTABLE MENTORING FRAMEWORK TO ADDRESS
FEMALE ATTRITION By Katie Potts, AIA, Diekema Hamann Architecture & Engineering The State of the Profession tudies of the architecture profession show that the overall satisfaction in the field is moderate, and architects — especially females — are leaving the profession. According to AIA’s 2016 Diversity in the Profession of Architecture survey, overall job satisfaction is moderate with 48% of women and 54% of men having high job satisfaction. Mentoring, which has been proven to increase satisfaction for both men and women, is a key factor to raising satisfaction. The Missing 32% Project, a committee created within AIA San Francisco in 2011, attributes its name to the National Architectural Accrediting Board statistic that females make up 42% of architecture graduates, but only 15-18% are licensed practitioners and senior leaders in architecture. There is a shortage of female role models. 32% of females and 26% of males who said they had left the profession cited a lack of role models as a reason for leaving.
S
In interviews I conducted as part of my master’s thesis, I learned that women tend to value mentoring relationships to the extent they are creating their own mentoring networks. The Diversity in the Profession of Architecture survey found that a mentorship program is a key strategy for retaining current female architects and attracting future ones. The day-to-day responsibilities of architects demands more than design, yet most architects pursued architecture to create projects, not to manage people, schedules and budgets. Young architects have had little to no instruction in management, which is why it is crucial for firms to invest in training. Yet according to Deltek’s 36th annual Architecture and Engineering Industry Study, it is common for firms to test new project managers without proper training. Interviews After conducting 12 interviews with women who had up to 37 years of experience in a total of 8 states, I organized and analyzed their responses using an affinity diagram. In his book, Memory Jogger Plus, Michael Brassard explains that an affinity diagram is a tool to analyze various characteristics of societies and social institutions. The affinity diagram revealed 9 categories: (1) Women express feeling devalued. They also express concern about (2) disengagement, (3) disconnected technical and design teams, and (4) belittled 20 CAM MAGAZINE JANUARY 2020
“The Voice of The Construction Industry®”
opinions, as well as lack of (5) work-life boundaries, (6) direction, (7) feedback, (8) business skills and (9) mentors. All of these categories can be addressed with mentoring. Lack of Mentors One of the consistent themes that appeared again and again in my interviews was that there is a desire for mentorship, and knowledge-sharing is often withheld, which leads to increased dissatisfaction. Some respondents said: • “There were times when I was younger that I was put into positions that I wasn’t qualified to be in. It was the hardest time. I was responsible for things I didn’t understand yet. I was working with a designer who was overbooked and they said, ‘You are smart. Figure it out.’ I didn’t like my job at that point. I was thrown into a pool that I wasn’t even familiar with. I learned a lot, but I do not think fondly of it.” • “In my current work environment, people poke funny jabs…That is when I noticed that I might ask too many questions. The Project Architect is busy and I have to force him to spend the time to work with me. …The joke was centered around hand-holding through the project.” • “I searched really hard for a female mentor and came up short. I was looking for someone that was in a leadership position and a mother….I felt a little selfish that I wanted to be a successful architect and mother.” • “I found all the women who are licensed in the area. I started meeting with them for lunch. Now it’s time to open it up to anyone because they need to see older women. It normalized it, and it can be possible.”

Mentoring to Address Attrition All areas of mentoring need to take alternative narratives into account. Increasing female involvement can change the culture of the profession and lead to a higher percentage of women in leadership roles. A framework for mentoring, which includes mentoring within the profession, will encourage psychological safety for architectural teams and engage talents currently devalued in the profession. I propose that a mentoring framework should be developed that facilitates mentoring to address the top 9 challenges, by hosting development resources for all career stages. The proposed mentoring framework is different than existing resources in that it is a collective effort through a Creative Commons license. Through Creative Commons, individuals or firms can develop knowledge and culture resources that are made accessible, for free, throughout the country by uploading files to the framework. The framework will house resources and serve as a conduit of creativity. The structure of the framework is fluid and, therefore, directs its own development. As the mentoring framework is used, connections are “The Voice of The Construction Industry®”

About the Author Katie Potts, AIA, is a registered Architect at Diekema Hamann Architecture & Engineering. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Calvin University and a Master of Architecture from Montana State University, where her thesis Committee included Maire O’Neill Conrad Ed. D, Michael Everts and Laura Black, Ph.D. Katie gained experience working in an architecture firm for two years prior to graduate school, which lead to her interest in the business of architecture and the attrition taking place in the profession. This ultimately led to her unwavering dedication to her thesis project to understand why female talent is leaving the profession and what can be done to respond to the challenges faced today.
strengthened or weakened based on how often links are selected. Strong connections within the framework create solidarity among users and allow change to “bubble up” within the profession. A variable and trackable structure allows users to analyze the evolution of challenges and reveal trends with realtime feedback. Integrated tools for analysis also show how resources found within the framework could or have been implemented. This anticipated resource will set itself apart by revealing current challenges and suggesting strategies to address the challenges within firms, state organizations and the country. By implementing this proposed mentoring framework, the goal is to increase the overall satisfaction among architects by addressing challenges and, as a result, reducing attrition. Through mentoring, the intent is that the profession will not continue to experience the all-toocommon loss of female talent and will witness a growth in the number of female role models for years to come. Key Points: • Talent is leaving the profession • Mentoring to address attrition

The Award-Winning ZIPLEVEL® PRO-2000 High Precision Altimeter Also selected as a 2019 Most Innovative Product Nominee at the World of Concrete Awards and the People’s Choice Winner at the 2019 Pool/Spa/Patio Expo, the ZIPLEVEL® PRO-2000 High Precision Altimeter replaces rotary lasers as, according to the manufacturer, “the world’s fastest, easiest, most powerful, precise and only pressurized bubble-free level.” The revolutionary ZIPLEVEL® PRO-2000 is a high-precision altimeter that not only levels but reads elevations in unmistakably clear digits while solving all of the foregoing problems. Savings start with the twosecond set up and five-second pack up time so there is no excuse to avoid checking a critical measurement. A press of the Measurement Module Zero key anywhere within the 40’ vertical set up range sets an infinite size level benchmark plane.
Elevations are displayed directly in your favorite scale with positive digits above and negative below your benchmark with 0.050 inches precision without math or line-ofsight. Because ZIPLEVEL technology is immune from tilted level plane problems, there is no need for factory calibration and no error with distance. The new dual range ZIPLEVEL can detect the thickness of a sheet of paper with 0.005” (0.1 mm) internal precision for measurements never before possible. As a bonus, the rugged ZIPLEVEL runs for up to a year of typical daily use on a single 9V battery. Visit www.ziplevel.com/ for more information.

& EXPO Building the Future of Michigan
AM and Home Builders Association (HBA) of Southeastern Michigan have joined forces to host Michigan’s largest construction industry event. The EXPO is sponsored by Lake Michigan Credit Union and Wimsatt Building Materials. This new, two-day construction event will be held at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi on February 12th & 13th, 2020, and will be attended by construction owners, contractors, home builders, remodelers, suppliers, architects and engineers. The EXPO opens at 10:00 a.m. and runs to 7:00 p.m. on February 12th, and goes from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on February 13th. Many exhibitors plan to launch new construction-related equipment, tools and services. Contractors, designers, and construction buyers will be able to actually see, test and learn about the newest equipment, products and services available. On Wednesday, February 12th, CAM will be celebrating its134th Annual Meeting, by invitation only, beginning at 11:30 a.m. This year’s Keynote Address speaker is Mark C. Wallace, President and CEO of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. The CAM Magazine Special Issue Awards will take place during the CAM Annual Meeting. CAM Magazine will also be presenting the 2019 Project of the Year Award, as voted upon by the readership of CAM Magazine and the CAM Magazine Editorial Advisory Committee. On Thursday, February 13th, from 8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m., CAM and HBA presents its Annual Economic Forecast Breakfast, featuring Robert Dietz, Ph.D., Chief Economist for the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Tickets are $40 per person; pre-registration is required. A host of free educational workshops are being offered during both days of the show, and many meet the requirements for Builders License CE. Avoid the long lines and pre-register online at www.miconstructionexpo.com. Attendees pre-registering before January 24th will have their name badges mailed, and those pre-registering after January 24th can pick up their badges at the door of the Great Lakes Design and Construction EXPO. For further questions, please call Ron Riegel at (248) 972-1110 or visit www.miconstructionexpo.com.

Christman Company, with The headquarters in Lansing, and Johnson Architecture have earned an East Tennessee Preservation Award for a $10 million renovation of the historic First Presbyterian Church in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee. The architectural and construction firms combined considerable experience working on historic properties for the project at the 68,000-square-foot church, which was founded in 1792, just one year after Knoxville was founded in 1791. The Christman Company preserved historic elements during construction, including the iconic rock at a redesigned entrance. The sanctuary, designed by the highly regarded Baumann Brothers of Knoxville, opened in 1903. The new systems throughout the church, including the HVAC system, will help the structure withstand the effects of time. New construction, including an elevated outdoor deck and a reflection garden, respected the existing historic character and compatibility with other church spaces.
