Club News The Club “Summer Time and the Living is Easy” by Vince Lima - Managing Director

Summer time is just around the corner. The pool is opening on Saturday, May 24th, Memorial Day Weekend. The furniture has been cleaned and we have ordered new cabanas to provide shelter from the summer sun. We are adding color with plants and other accessories to offer a serene setting for our Members, their families and guests to relax and refresh the senses. We are happy to announce, that unlike last year, we may now serve adult beverages. We will also be offering more food service this season. We continue to strive toward our goal of bringing more and more value and options to our Members.

To answer some of the rules and guidelines for the pool, we share the following: • No coolers • No outside food or beverages • Food and non-alcoholic beverage purchases apply to member monthly food minimum • Members are allowed to bring guests. • Each guest fee is $5.00 per person per day. (This includes extended family and friends, children and grand children over the age of 5.) • Guests must register at the pool upon entry. • Children under the age of 5 have no guest fee. • There is no limit to the times a child under the age of 12 may be a guest at the pool. • However, adult guests are limited to 5 visits per pool season We hope that this is helpful to your planning. We look forward to your seeing all the great additions and changes we are bringing to our pool area. It's going to be a fun and fantastic summer at the Salem Glen Golf & Country Club Pool. Don't forget, the Pool is available for private parties and special events. Call Syvella to schedule your party today.

“Spring Menu”

Event Planning

“ Exciting Times at SGCC ”

by Dusty Snow, Executive Chef

by Syvella Coomer-Event Coordinator

I am happy that warmer weather has finally arrived. I look forward to sharing our new menu with you in the coming weeks.

The renovations to our dining facility are coming along nicely. The staff and crews have worked very hard to make these updates in a minimally disruptive manner. The new chandeliers in the lobby, along with the faux finishes and new lighting main dining room are beautiful. They are an updated and elegant look.

At Salem Glen Country Club we listen to our members. I believe this will be an exciting and inviting menu for everyone to enjoy. I have changed the marinade for our burgers and believe all will be pleased. The coming menu has been condensed somewhat, making room for better quality products and giving our team more focus preparing the best food possible. During my time here at SGCC, I have learned more about the pallets of the membership. I hope the members have enjoyed trying new things and experiencing new dishes. I enjoy making different types of food. Not everyone likes the same things. We try to offer a variety on the menu; something for those with a more adventurous pallet and something for those that may be less willing to challenge their normal food choices. Please trust me, the food combinations and seasonings are meant to work harmoniously together and taste amazing. I promise you, the food we present at Salem Glen is top notch and is top tier within our region. Working together as members and staff we are creating a special experience and environment here. Tell your friends about our short ribs, which are off the charts, or the new poulet rouge (organic, slowly grown, and the cleanest poultry you can buy), or the famous Brie burger, which you just have to taste for yourself. You won't beat the food we offer at SGCC.

New furniture is being ordered and will soon be ready for our members to enjoy, not only for weekly lunch and dinner dining, but also for your special events. We know your guests will be impressed with the appearance of the room, making your event one you will be more than proud of. Mother's Day is just around the corner, Sunday, May 11th. Executive Chef Dusty Snow and his staff will prepare a delicious buffet the whole family will enjoy. (See more info, back cover.) Thank you to all of those that participated in our first SGCC Wine Club Tasting Event. It was a great success. Our next Wine Club Tasting will be Wednesday, May 7th. The theme is "Wines Around the World." Wine Club Members may attend for as part of their Wine Club Membership. (They also receive preferred pricing on wines offered) and Non-Wine Club Members may attend for $10 which includes the tasting and hors d' oeuvres. Everyone has a wonderful time and we look forward to this event growing at Salem Glen.

CINCO DE MAYO EVE!

“Cooking Pasta”

Sunday, May 4th - 6 PM

To start off, there is nothing like fresh made pasta, but since most of us don't have the time or energy to make our own, dried pasta will suffice. When preparing to cook pasta, make sure you have a large and tall pot of water at a rolling boil. I like to salt my water quite heavily. The salt helps the water boil more quickly and adds flavor. I also add a few good dashes of olive oil which also helps to prevent the pasta sticking together.

CELEBRATE MEXICO

by Dusty Snow, Executive Chef

Once you place the pasta in the water try your best to keep the pasta well stirred to release the starches in the pasta. Once it comes to a boil, it usually takes about 8 minutes to cook. When you think the pasta is cooked, taste it. You still want to feel just a slight crunch, or at least feel the body of the pasta, because once you take it out of the water it will continue to cook...Strain the pasta in a colander, after that I place it back in the pot it came from and add in oil or butter to help with flavor and also again to prevent sticking. Once you do that, you are ready to eat or store in the refrigerator for later.

with Special Tacos, Delicious Quesadillas Bring your Sombrero and join in the fun!

GIVING BACK

“Community Awareness” by Cammie Collier

Giovan Battista, father of Vince Lima, lived in the Northwest suburb of Chicago for most of his adult life. Mr. Battista met his wife in this small community. Throughout his life he gave thanks and credit to organizations that helped less fortunate children without parents, for his wife's mother grew up in such a facility called, the Maryville Academy. It was a very special place for him. About three weeks after Mr. Lima’s father passed away, he received a call from the director at the Maryville Academy inquiring how Mr. Battista was. They had missed his daily visits to the Academy and thought perhaps something was wrong. Being advised of Mr. Battista’s passing the director proceeded to share that for many, many years, Mr. Battista would go to all the bakeries in the area and purchase the unsold bread. Then he would take it to the Academy for them to feed the residents there. He did this religiously, every single day. If he found that he couldn’t go for some reason, Mr. Battista would be sure that someone else would insure this took place. He honored that daily commitment for this facility and these people that meant so much to him. This was news to Mr. Lima. It was inspirational learning what his father had done this throughout his life, in secret. To this day, Mr. Lima supports the Maryville Academy and other charitable organizations such as Orchard Village, a home and training center for mentally challenged adults. During Mr. Lima’s stewardship on the board of that organization, through corporate donations, $800,000.00 has been raised. It is unique to have an individual that doesn’t just talk about giving back to the community, but actually does. It is even more refreshing and special when you find an entire family that gravitates and lives actively in that philosophy as well. With this spirit, SGCC offers an opportunity for our members to give back and receive benefit for their efforts in donating to the Clemmons Food Pantry. Bring three canned or non-perishable dried food items to the Club and receive a small basket of driving range balls. Our Club collection of food will be of great assistance to the community. Thank you for your kind support and donations. To learn more about this organization, see clemmonsfoodpantry.org. SGCC will be hosting a tournament, Friday, June 6th or the Clemmons Food Pantry. Please call the Pro Shop for details. Most of us are pretty lucky even if we sometimes don't see it, or appreciate it. There are people less fortunate and they need our help.

Golf & Health Golf News " Golf Is In Full Swing”

Daniel Byrd - Golf Professional

May is shaping up to be a busy month at SGCC. It feels like golf season again. As a reminder to all Members the course is scheduled for green aerification on May 5th-7th. The golf course, driving range, and pro shop will be closed Monday the 5th as well as Tuesday the 6th. We will re-open on Wednesday, May 7th at 11:00 for normal play. We believe that by doing the aerifacation in May the greens are much healthier to start and the healing time is quicker. Greens should be back to normal within a two week period.

Course News "Spring

Matthew Robinson - Superintendent

I have been looking forward to spring and it is finally here. The Bermuda has started to green up, and as expected it was set back by some late April frosts. Because of the harsh winter we have sustained some minor winter kill, but with warmer night time temperatures, water, and fertilizer it should start to take off. May is a busy month for us. We have a greens aeration scheduled for the 5th and 6th. Fertilizer for the Bermuda must be spread wall to wall over the entire golf course. Issues have been addressed in the irrigation system, which lay dormant throughout the winter. We are definitely in better shape going into this summer season. The Bent grass greens are growing nicely, and already have a strong healthy root system which will benefit us for the up coming summer heat. Much needed maintenance on our equipment has been completed in the past few months and we are in great shape.

NINE & DINE SATURDAY, May 24th - Couples team up for nine holes in the late afternoon followed by dinner and drinks. These social events are sure to be pure fun; however we will have relationship counselors available upon completion of play!! The format for Nine & Dine will vary.

You will begin to see stripping of sod on 13 and 18 tee boxes. These tees need to be leveled to get proper drainage in order to establish a good stand of turf. This winter was especially harsh on 18 due to unusual wetness throughout this winter, and not to mention its location and micro-climate.
