Cannabis issue raised at commissioner meeting Discussion regarding acceptance tabled %\ .5,6 6&+())(/ Calhoun News-Herald The issue facing counties across the state, cannabis legalization, made its way to the Calhoun County Commissioners Thursday. Among the list of items on the docket for the meeting, commissioners were scheduled to speak on what the county should do about its regulation and taxation. However, a proper discussion of the topic was tabled until Calhoun State’s Attorney Rick Ringhausen would be present and give his legal advice on the matter. In spite of this, the commissioners voiced concerns about the regulation and enforcement of legal cannabis in the county. Illinois was the 11th state to legalize marijuana back in June. The bill will begin to take effect on Jan. 1, 2020, meaning that residents are legally

Are you going to put it into your zoning ordinances? Furthermore, as it was noted, cannabis is not legal federally adding to the considerations of what this means not only for local government, but also those who will be entrusted with enforcing these laws. One such example of this was brought up by commissioner Doug Wilschetz, who noted that those with medical marijuana cards were denied the right to own a weapon because of federal regulations, which define marijuana as a controlled substance. During the next meeting, however, the commissioners will be tasked with making the decision to permit the sale of recreational marijuana in the county. This does not mean that a dispensary will be opening in Calhoun, though. Any prospective dispensaries will still be required to acquire one of a limited (See, CANNABIS, A2)

Sheriff game for another horse ride after public buzz %\ .5,6 6&+())(/ Calhoun News-Herald

here's a new sheriff’s vehicle in town and he’s got four legs and a tail. Sheriff Bill Heffington debuted his equestrian skills during the Batchtown Fall Festival when he led his mounted posse in the parade. Horse riding is not a specialty of the sheriff’s. “It was the first time I’ve ridden since I was a teenager, Sheriff Heffington said. “It felt like I was riding a two story building. He was tall. But after the Batchtown event, Heffington said he’s now fielding requests to ride a horse in other events including Kampsville’s Old Settlers Days. In a viral Facebook post, Chief Deputy Kyle Jacobs put

out the call for the Sheriff to ride in Old Settler’s Days and received wide support from locals. “Who would like to see both Sheriff Bill and Deputy Nate on horseback at Old Settler’s Days? Jacobs wrote. “Maybe we can make it happen - Nate already has a hat! Heffington is embracing the idea. He said it was funny, and he is looking forward to his next appearance on horseback despite being out of practice. He cracked a few jokes about having to swing the horse wide and being told the girth, a piece of equipment used to keep the saddle in place on a horse, should be secure enough. “I was holding onto that (saddle) horn while throwing out candy, he said. Survey crews will be measuring first floor elevations in Calhoun

%\ .5,6 6&+())(/ Calhoun News-Herald Officials from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), on Tuesday, Oct. 1, hosted individuals from across Calhoun, Jersey and Greene counties to discuss the application process for public assistance. The meeting was an in depth look at the application process including what types of organizations qualify and what repairs are covered by federal disaster funds. Four types of organizations are eligible for the program. Calhoun qualifies under two of these categories, local governments and private nonprofits.

%\ .5,6 6&+())(/ Calhoun News-Herald The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) will soon be conducting first floor elevation surveys in Calhoun County. Paul Osman, chief of Statewide Floodplain Programs, wishes to inform residents that survey crews will not disrupt or damage properties. The purpose of these surveys is to better understand at what flood stage buildings begin to be affected by floodwaters. In doing so, IDNR will be able to create a map with these

%\ .5,6 6&+())(/ Calhoun News-Herald State Sen. Steve McClure, R-Springfield, and State Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer, R-Jacksonsville, made their way down to Jerseyville to speak with constituents about their concerns regarding a wide range of issues including gun control, taxes and abortion, to name a few. The two legislators spoke about the uphill battle for down state interests in a state legislature that holds a Democratic majority. “Things have changed a lot over (my) seven years, Davidsmeyer said. McClure elaborated on this point, touching on legislation passed earlier this year that will raise minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2025. (See, LAWMAKERS, A3)
