hat do you do when you’re quarantined? Hunt bears, that’s what you do. At least, that’s what you do in Calhoun County, where residents have been on the prowl searching out those honey-snatchers in yards, porches and even windows. “The bear hunt is a fun and safe way for families to get out of the house and still stay safe while practicing social distancing recommendations, Lauren Eilerman, organizer of the bear hunt, said. “You drive around hunting for the bears at houses to see how many you can find. The idea has taken off all across the county, with bears being seen from Brussels to Kampsville and everywhere

in between. “It’s a drive-and-find activity. There is a thread on Facebook you can follow that has specific areas to look. Just drive safe and remain in your vehicles, Eilerman said. Eilerman was inspired to bring this activity to Calhoun after seeing other communities organize similar activities. “I have noticed quite a few surrounding communities doing similar things such as ‘heart hunters and rainbow hunters.’ Diane Brangenberg and Debby Klunk shared a post to Facebook saying it would be so fun. So, starting a group is what we did, Eilerman said. After Eilerman had been inspired, she went to work making a Facebook group to promote the activity. “The Facebook group is managed by myself, but the group is taking off with posts from everyone. The group is public, and it’s everyone getting involved that’s making it what it is.

The spirit of community, which is now being made apparent more than ever on platforms like Facebook, Skype and other social media, defines Calhoun, according to Eilerman, and

is the reason activities like this do so well locally. “I feel like friendships are what (See, BEARS, A2)

Fundraising efforts underway for new football bleachers By CONNOR ASHLOCK Calhoun News-Herald Sophie Lorton is a young lady setting an example for residents of all ages in Calhoun County. Sophie, along with her mom, Kerry Lorton, are organizing an “Egg My House fundraiser, where interested persons can pay to have someone else’s yard bombarded with candy-filled eggs in time for Easter. It’s like a prank, but one that’s fun for everybody. At 18-years-old, Lorton is currently a sophomore at SIUE studying predental. She’s also an avid athlete. Recently, she joined in efforts to purchase new bleachers for the football field at the Calhoun High School. “I went to the county high school and played sports there. While in school, I traveled to other sports fields at different schools and saw what they had and it made me want that for my home too, Lorton said. With Easter rapidly approaching, to Sophie, the time seemed right to put a plan into action.“The Egg My House fundraiser is designed to get the younger crowd involved in raising money for the bleachers, but it’s received interest across all ages, which is awesome, Lorton said. “There are two other fundraisers going on right now for the same purpose. There’s a Go Fund Me to raise money for renovations and they’re selling bricks, so we thought adding this fundraiser would bring this community dream closer to fruition, Lorton added. She referred to the Cash for Bricks

fundraiser that recently got a deadline extension. More information can be directed to Laura Longnecker at 217851-0184 or lauralongneckerod@hotmail.com. In order to egg someone’s house, participants will pay $12 for every 15 eggs. Organizers urge those interested to pre-order their eggs before April 8 to ensure they have plenty of time to get them ready to go. They’ll be hiding eggs in the late evening of Saturday, April 11 and request that pets are put up during that time. “You can call us to place an order, and we’ll hide eggs that we’ve filled in people’s yards that you’ve instructed us to hide them in, Sophie said. Sophie and her mother are inviting high schoolers seeking community service hours to help hide the eggs, as well as anyone in the community interested in volunteering. “For now, it’s just me and my mom but when it comes time to hide the eggs, if you’re in National Honor Society or a community member that wants to be involved, you’re more than welcome to help, Sophie said. Sophie shares that she and her mom are working to get the information out to the county through flyers and social media posts, and that they’ve received some interest in their endeavor already. “On Facebook, people have been getting ahold of either me or my mom. I’ve also had people contact me through my phone and through messenger. People have the option of sending me the payment through Venmo, through a check in the mail or just by meeting me in Hardin somewhere.
