%\ JARAD JARMON Calhoun News-Herald The Village of Hardin is directing residents and business owners to remove sandbags, otherwise they will be paying a fee in the future. At it’s August meeting, the Village Board discussed post-flood clean up in the Village of Hardin, according to a Hardin news release. After surveying properties through-
out the Village of Hardin affected by the 2019 flood, the Village Board agreed residents and businesses should start the process of removing sandbags and flood debris from their properties. The Village of Hardin requested owners of affected properties to start cleaning up the properties today and complete clean-up by Sept. 22. After that date, the Village will provide notice to noncompliant properties. Should they be non-compliant, a warning will be issued with a select

State phasing in $40k minimum for teacher’s pay Local oďŹƒcials skeptical move will curb teacher deďŹ cit signiďŹ cantly %\ JARAD JARMON Calhoun News-Herald In a move that surprised no one, at least not educators, state lawmakers and Gov. J.B. Pritzker passed a measure Thursday phasing in a required $40k minimum pay for teachers to address the statewide teacher shortage. The bill is aimed at relieving what many have described as a severe statewide teacher shortage in Illinois. During the 2018-2019 school year, Pritzker said, roughly 1,500 teaching positions across the state were unfilled. Local school officials, however, are unconvinced it Jarad Jarman/Calhoun News-Herald

amount of days to be compliant, Danielle Hurley, village clerk, said. If they are still non-compliant, property owners will incur a fee. Unlike in the ’93 flooding, it will be the financial and physical responsibility of the property owner to remove sandbags and debris. Hurley said the state disaster relief funding this time around is going solely to infrastructure excluding the cleanup of sandbag and other debris as it was in the last great flood in the region. Currently, there are “tens of thousands of sandbags strewn about the vil-
will have much of an impact on these shortages, at least locally. House Bill 2078, which passed the General Assembly in the final days of the 2019 session, phases in an increase in minimum teacher salaries to $40,000 a year over the next four years. Brussels Superintendent Mark Martin said it might be something that has a notably positive impact on bigger districts, but for more rural districts like Brussels, he said, other factors are playing a role in the deficit of candidates the district along with others across the state and even country have seen. Simply put, there are fewer people locally that have the (See, TEACHERS, A4)

t’s no secret that Calhoun High School Football has been steeped in rich tradition dating back to the mid’80s extending into the modern day. From 1983 until 2006, the Warriors posted an astonishing record of 212-61, including a secondplace finish in 1987 and back to back state titles in 1992 and 1993. During that dominant stretch
of football, the program made 24 consecutive postseasons, which is not to be overlooked. Since 2007, the record may not be as impressive, sitting at 64-66. But in the last 12 seasons, Calhoun has been able to make the playoffs 7 times, including a deep post-season run in 2016 that lasted until the quarterfinal round. Last season, the Warriors took a step back with a record of 2-7, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Now, however, they will (See, WARRIORS, A3)

%\ JARAD JARMON Calhoun News-Herald The Brussels School Board OK’d two for assistant coaching positions for the Brussels basketball and volleyball last week at their meeting. Baylee Kiel, a college graduate and alum to Brussel’s basketball, was approved for the assistant girls basketball coach, Brussels Superintendent Mark Martin said. He said she was a “very good basketball player here and still has a younger brother and sister in the district. Vicki Struce will be an assistant coach for girls volleyball. This will be a new position for community
member Struce. Also, Sarah Schleeper, school nurse, and Pam Friedel, speechlanguage pathologist in the district, will be sponsors for the Civics Club at the High School. This will be the third year for the club. On the docket for the evening, the board members also approved the elementary and high school handbook. Martin said nothing major has changed outside of a tweak to the lunch prices. The prices were raised a dime this year, a result of remaining compliant with state board requirements to increase these prices, Martin said. In other news, an annual budget meeting was set for Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the grade school cafeteria.
