Watts to head up North Greene baseball team By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press A former Carrollton graduate and baseball player will be taking over the helm of the North Greene Spartan baseball team this spring. The North Greene School Board at their March meeting hired Caleb Watts as the new baseball coach taking over for Cade Reno. “We hate to see Cade go, but we understand that he wants to spend more time with his family, North Greene Athletic Director Brett Berry said. “With that said, we are excited to welcome Caleb as our new boys baseball coach. Watts is a 2014 graduate of Carrollton

High School and a 2018 graduate of Greenville University. Watts played baseball all four years in high school as well as all four years in college. While at Greenville, he helped his team win two St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Watts is currently a physical education teacher at North Greene. Prior to coming to North Greene, Watts was an assistant baseball coach at Mulberry Grove High School in 2018 and then an assistant baseball coach at Carrollton last year. “We are looking forward to having Caleb continue to build up our baseball program, Berry said. “He is enthusiastic and has a genuine love of the game.

“We hope to more fully incorporate the teaching of our faith into our extra-curricular activities and make these activities a more integrated part of our faith community.

Julie Lake St. John’s Principal “After much prayer and consideration, the school board, athletic committee, administration and pastor of St. John the Evangelist School have decided not to pursue the renewal of the cooperative team agreement with Carrollton School District, Lake wrote. “We appreciate and thank the Carrollton School District for hosting the cooperative team agreement for the last several years and allowing our students the possibility to participate in extra-curricular activities that they might not have had the opportunity to experience otherwise. The decision to end the coop is based on the desire to incorporate a more faith based program for extracurricular sports programs. “As we look toward the future of St. John the Evangelist School, one of our priorities is to improve the Catholic identity of our school, Lake said. “We hope to more fully incorporate the teaching of our faith into our extra-curricular activities and make these activities a more integrated part of our faith community. That is not to say that a coop agreement is out of the question in the future. “We are not closing the door to considering future cooperative agreements, but feel this is the direction we need to take at this time, Lake said. “Thank you so much for all you have done for our students and we pray that we can continue working together now and in the future in other endeavors. Following an hour long closed session, the board approved the hiring of a new baseball coach for the high school boys baseball team. White Hall Library hosts field trip By CARMEN ENSINGER Greene Prairie Press The White Hall Public Library hosted a field trip for the fifth grade class at North Greene Elementary last week. “This field trip was designed to show the students what programs and activities we have available here at the library, Librarian Penny Eilers said. “We introduced the students to the library and all the resources available to them, such as eBooks, and how they are free with their library card. With predators lurking everywhere these days, even behind a computer screen, library staff hosted a discussion on online safety followed by a fast-paced dice game. A humorous book talk was also held on a graphic novel series called Catwad. Moving away from the literary world, the students had the opportunity to participate in a Pringles taste test. Students were tasked with using all of their senses to figure out what flavor the different Pringles were. Students were also introduced to the Science Programming that is offered on the third Friday of each month from 4-5 p.m. “This month, the theme was Chocolate Science where we made armpit fudge and learned where chocolate came from, Eilers said. “We then read a small part of ‘The Chocolate

Chase’ by Geronimo Stilton and predicted whether different chocolates would sink or float.â€? The students, who will be in sixth grade next year, were invited to start coming to the Teen CafĂŠ, held at the library ever Wednesday after school from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for students in grades 6 through 12. “This is a student-led program that was started as a summer program last year, but it was so successful they wanted it to continue during the school year,â€? Eilers said. “We have a teen volunteer that comes in early and sets it up, and we usually have 5 to 8 attend each week.â€? The students were given a library card bookmark and a calendar of events for the month of March. The library offers programming for all ages. “Every Monday at 10 a.m. a story time and stay and play is held for families with kids ages 0 to 5,â€? Eilers said. “Families listen to stories, engage in activities and then stay and play in the children’s area.â€? The adults are not forgotten either. Every Thursday from 6-8 p.m. is Adult Game Night. “Adults gather and play games and socialize during this period,â€? Eilers said. “The library also hosts an adult book (See, LIBRARY, A2)
