Pike-Scott Farm Bureau distributes a ton of pork to area food banks By DAVID CAMPHOUSE Scott County Times On Friday, June 12, food banks throughout Pike and Scott counties received a total of nearly 2,000 pounds of ground pork thanks to Farmer Bureau Young Leaders’ Harvest for All initiative. The pork was donated by brothers Jeremy and Jason Thomas of Thomas Farms south of Pittsfield, who contributed 14 hogs. The Thomases recognized a growing community need due to COVID-19 layoffs at the beginning of April, which prompted the brothers to consider contributing pork to local food pantries. “With everybody out of work, there was a great need to help,” Jeremy Thomas said. The COVID-19 crisis also resulted in a bottleneck in the meat packing industry, which has adversely affected the Thomases and other pork producers throughout the area. “Shortly after we thought of providing the pork to food banks, the lockers started shutting down,” Thomas said. “Beardstown never closed but slowed down. We had to change our schedule and send half-loads, but we never had to euthanize hogs.” Thomas went on to say that their family has a history of giving farm produce to area food pantries. “We also raise sweetcorn,” Thomas said. “We always give sweetcorn away to the food pantries. With the pigs, it was a good way to add protein that people need.” “It’s tremendous for the needy families of Scott County,” Dave Roberts of the Winchester Kiwanis and Scott County Food Pantry said. Processing of the hogs was funded by Pike-Scott Farm Bureau Young Leaders

and the Pike County Endowment Fund. “Food insecurity has always been a focus of our grants,” Pike County Endowment Fund chair Kaye Iftner said. Marlee Schultz, chair of the PikeScott Farm Bureau Young Leaders, added that the Harvest for All initiative is a long running program of the Farm Bureau, designed to connect farmers with people in need of nutritious food. “This is the program’s nineteenth year,” Schultz said. “It’s local farmers helping local people.”

According to the American Farm Bureau more than 50 million Americans, including nearly 17 million children, are food insecure, meaning they live at risk of hunger Last year, Harvest for All programs across the country donated a total of 26.2 million pounds of food, spent 14,380 hours volunteering, and donated over $494,700 to their local food banks. Food pantries that received the ground pork on Friday are Barry Food Pantry, The Crossing Food Pantry, Two Rivers Reach Out Center Food Pantry,

Naples Food Pantry, and the Scott County Food Pantry. Pike-Scott Harvest for All has distributed pork, hand sanitizer, and milk coupons through the duration of the COVID-19 emergency. Those who wish to assist Pike-Scott Harvest for All, can do so by making a tax-deductible charitable contribution to the Two Rivers Farm Bureau Foundation, PO Box 6, Pittsfield, IL 62363. Please note the contribution is for the Harvest for All project.
