Storytelling Magic Last week two authors, a storyteller and an interpreter visited our school. Mrs Betty Gilderdale, author of the Yellow Digger series, and a number of other titles, met with Hirozumi Asai, a writer of childrens’ books from Japan, along with a storybook reader, Shinya Mirua, and an interpreter, Takeo Maeda. Following a meeting and an exchange of ideas with Mrs Gilderdale, the visitors entranced children in some of the junior classes with books written by Mr Asai and the storytelling magic of Takeo Maedo. It is amazing how little formal spoken language is needed when illustrations help tell the story along with a most expressive storyteller.
Student Achievement Data The mid year student achievement data, as reported to the Board of Trustees on 19 August, can be found on the front page of the school’s website. www.campbellsbay.school.nz On the face of it, the data and the analysis might not sound as though it is the most exciting thing to read. However, the data and the following analysis of the data that forms the basis for the planning of programmes for students is one of the most important set of information we generate each year. Substantial amounts of classroom programmes are founded on the outcomes of the analysis of this data.
Bus Bay The morning arrangements in the bus bay are working well. We probably have a 95%+ compliance in terms of ‘stopping, dropping and going’ taking very little time. Hold ups are usually because of the sheer number of vehicles using the bus bay between 8.30am and 8.55am, particularly on wet mornings. Now the turn around times in the morning have improved markedly it is time to turn our attention to improving the situation in the afternoons. To operate efficiently, arrangements should be almost the same as the morning: Stopping, picking up and going (without the need for parents to get out of their vehicles.) If you are going to collect your child after school from the bus bay please tell your child to wait on the shell area and to keep a look out for your arrival. If you cannot see your child in the waiting area, please do not get out of your vehicle and go looking for them! This can create chaos as vehicles back up behind your parked car. If you cannot see your child, please drive out of the bus bay and park elsewhere and then go and look for your child.
Please note that while the data is presented in year groups or time at school, each child is monitored and accounted for. This provides very useful information when it comes to identifying either individuals who require particular programmes and/or it allows us to monitor how children are progressing who are already in particular programmes. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at: principal@campbellsbay.school.nz
The bus bay in the afternoon from the time the school bus leaves until 3.30pm is strictly: Stop, pick up and go. We thank you for complying with this rule.
